‘777 Charlie’ movie review: A heartfelt take on a charming friendship

The film could well be described as the “relationship between a man and a dog” but director kiranraj ensures that he packs in emotion and light-heartedness in equal measure that we are engaged all the time.

Can a dog change your life?

The makers of recent film 777 Charlie certainly think so. And their latest work is a deeply heartfelt cinematic presentation of that fact.

Dharma (Rakshit Shetty) is a loner who feels that what he does is always correct. "How others view me isn't right," he says, in a voiceover early in the film. You can't find fault with the others; after all, he rarely bothers about the colony he lives in or his neighbours and is mostly grumpy and unkempt. His house is always in a mess, with cigarette butts and liquor bottles strewn around. At the factory he works in, he is one of the best workers — he doesn't take a single day of leave — and prefers to keep to himself, thus earning the ire of most of his colleagues.

Simply put, he's a loner without any friends, family or bonds.

Until a Labrador pup, which he later names Charlie due to his love for Charlie Chaplin, comes into his life. And then, life, for Dharma, becomes topsy turvy.

This is predominantly a man-animal relationship film, but it is also a travel film and a musical. When director Kiranraj isn't showing you pictureseque locales (cinematography by Arvind S Kashyap) during Dharma's life-changing road trip, he's making you invested in the story thanks also to its music (by Nobin Paul), with wonderful little songs peppered in the screenplay, like the occasional barks that Charlie lets out.

This writer watched the dubbed Tamil version of the film (which is a primarily a Kannada film, with many well-known faces from the Kannada film industry ), but the makers seem to have ensured that it feels very original. The sign boards are all from Chennai — the colony the protagonist lives in is in Ambattur — and the actors do a commendable job with the lip sync.

Languages aren’t a barrier in this film, as the subject is all heart. In a line, the film could well be described as the “relationship between a man and a dog” but director Kiranraj ensures that he packs in emotion and light-heartedness in equal measure that we are engaged all the time. English film The Dog Problem (2006) tried something on similar lines, but 777 Charlie scores much higher on the emotional quotient.

If the first half focusses on the build-up to the relationship, the second half has several heartfelt moments that hit you hard. There's a wonderfully written and conceived sequence here set in the backdrop of a dog show that's the equivalent of a last ball six in a cricket match - director Kiranraj scores high, tugging at the heartstrings.

That he has an apt cast bringing to life his idea is a big bonus. Rakshit Shetty is perfect as the protagonist and gets in all the right expressions, be it when he's frustrated due to an intrusion in life, and later, when his outlook towards life changes. Charlie, the subject the film revolves around, is a delight to watch on the big screen. A small girl named Adrika (played by Sharvari) gets a neatly-written role. Even the characters that get lesser screen time — be it Raj B Shetty as the vet, Sangeetha Sringeri as a champion of animal rights, Bobby Simha as a dog-lover and Danish Sait as a reporter — make an impact on the on-screen proceedings.

The only grouse was the tad long runtime (packed with far too many songs) and the film's humour, which thankfully isn't a lot. For a cinematic work that celebrates animals, placing "dog jokes" (Sample: a mother tells her daughter: "unakku nai venuma? Veetuku va, appa irukanga) sticks out. Barring that, there's a lot to love about this film.

'777 Charlie' review: This Rakshit Shetty film is a celebration of unconditional love and loyalty

In The Great Dictator, Charlie Chaplin says, "In this world, there is room for everyone. And the good Earth is rich and can provide for everyone. The way of life can be free and beautiful, but... we have lost the way." These words echo true even after eight decades, and it is these words that fuel the journey of Dharma and Charlie, the leads of Kiranraj's heartwarming adventure drama, '777 Charlie'.

While Hollywood frequently celebrates human-animal bonding in their films, Indian cinema doesn't really go all out at it. For instance, dogs are predominantly either used in revenge dramas where they do over-the-top things like plot with other animals to avenge their master's death or just appear in cameos in investigative thrillers sniffing out the clues to nab the bad guys. We might remember director Dinesh Baboo, who was one of the first filmmakers to use a dog as a pivotal character in his film, Sangharsha. Recently, we saw Naanu Mathu Gunda, which did have a nuanced portrayal of human-animal bonding. But the strong emotional core of '777 Charlie' makes Kiranraj's debut directorial stand tall.

The film is about Dharma (Rakshit Shetty), a loner with a past, who is forlorn, aggressive, and takes to the bottle like a fish to water. He is derisively mocked as 'Hitler' by his neighbours and at his workplace. When a stray dog (Charlie) enters Dharma's life, things take an interesting, hilarious, and many a time, emotional turn. However, things start off patchy between Dharma and Charlie. From seeking help from veterinarian Ashwin Kumar (Raj B Shetty) to get leads for an adoption to Devika (Sangeetha Sringeri), an officer at an animal welfare centre, who gives Charlie the name, there are characters that come in at the right time to facilitate the bond between Dharma and Charlie.

From looking for ways to let go of Charlie, to making him the most integral part of his life, Dharma's life takes a positive U-turn that enriches his life. However, circumstances and narrative choices make his happiness short-lived, and from here, '777 Charlie' becomes an adventure drama that sees Dharma and Charlie go on expeditions across the country. From the snow-capped mountains in the Himalayas and the people-filled landscape of many other places, '777 Charlie' takes us on a journey that reaffirms the belief in unconditional love, and how a dog named Charlie just changed the lives of many due to the purity of its heart.

At a time when high-octane action films are ruling the roost, Kiranraj convincingly reminds us to open our hearts to heartwarming but simple stories. While there are scenes that needed a bit more fleshing out, some of these flaws can be ignored because of the heart of the director that is seen through each and every scene of this almost 3-hour-long film.

Dharma isn't a one-dimensional character, and Rakshit strikes a superb balance in portraying the role and its various shades. He plays off Charlie, whose soul and spontaneity, make you want to consider having such a companion for yourself. Their equation is definitely the soul of the film and it is amusing, evocative, and manages to wring out tears with ease.

Although the film is essentially about Dharma and Charlie, the presence of other people in this world aids in the personal development of Dharma. Be it the hilarious cameo of Raj B Shetty or the precocious young child Ardika (Sharvai), who is the first friendly person to Dharma and Charlie, and the assuredness of Sangeetha Sringeri's Devika, each character gets to play a vital role in '777 Charlie'. In fact, even if the duration of the character was small, Tamil actor Bobby Simha's cameo as a loner with a dog is instrumental in Dharma realising his life has come a full circle.

One of the biggest strengths of '777 Charlie' is definitely the hardworking technical team, which not just overcame logistical challenges but ensured the quality of work delivered was on point. If the music of Nobin Paul elevates the road-trip film, then cinematographer Aravind Kashyap's work, especially in the Himalayan portions of '777 Charlie', makes the film into one for the ages.

Watching animals come into the life of humans to make the latter better might not be a new story after all, but in a world like ours, and in times like these, it is uplifting to see a film like '777 Charlie'where unconditional love and loyalty from animals show us how within all humans, there is the propensity to be... well... loving.

777 Charlie is definitely an ode to dog lovers and Kiranraj, Rakshit and Co have crafted it in such a way that even if you are not one, watching this film just might make you revisit that stance.

பிரியமான உயிரொன்றின் விருப்பமான ஆசையை தடைகள் பல கடந்து நிறைவேற்றத்துடிக்கும் நெகிழ்ச்சியான படைப்பு தான் '777 சார்லி'.

ஒரு பெரும் இழப்புக்குப்பின் தனியாகவே இப்பெரும் வாழ்வை நகர்த்திக்கொண்டிருக்கிறார் தர்மா (ரக்‌ஷித் ஷெட்டி). சிரிப்புக்கான தடயமேயில்லாத தர்மாவின் முகத்தில் எப்போதும் கோபமும், வெறுப்பும் சூழ்ந்துகொண்டிருக்கிறது. வாழ்வில் எந்த பிடிமானமில்லாமல் இருக்கும் தர்மாவிடம் வந்து தஞ்சமடைகிறது சார்லி என்ற நாய். வேறு வழியில்லாமல் அதை விற்றுவிட வேண்டும் என்ற நோக்கத்தில் வளர்த்துக்கொண்டிருக்கும் தர்மா ஒரு கட்டத்தில் சார்லியில்லாமல் வாழ முடியாது என்ற நிலைக்கு தள்ளப்படுகிறார்.

தர்மாவின் வாழ்க்கையை ஒட்டுமொத்தமாக மாற்றும் சார்லிக்கு ஒரு ஆசை இருக்கிறது. அது என்ன ஆசை? அதை தர்மா எப்படி நிறைவேற்றினார்? இறுதியில் என்ன நடந்தது? என்ற கேள்விகளுக்கு எமோஷனலாக பதில் சொல்லிருக்கும் படம் தான் '777 சார்லி'. கன்னட படமான இந்த படம், தமிழ், தெலுங்கு, மலையாளம் உள்ளிட்ட பல்வேறு மொழிகளில் வெளியாகியுள்ளது. தமிழ்நாட்டில் இப்படத்தை கார்த்திக் சுப்புராஜின் ஸ்டோன்பெஜ் தயாரிப்பு நிறுவனம் வெளியிட்டுள்ளது.

தர்மா கதாபாத்திரத்தில் நடித்திருக்கிறார் ரக்‌ஷித் ஷெட்டி. கோபத்தையும், வெறுப்பையும், தனிமையையும், சோகத்தையும் முதல் பகுதியிலும், அன்பையும், நெகிழ்ச்சியையும், அழுகையையும், பிரிவின் துயரையும் இரண்டாம் பகுதியிலும் காட்ட வேண்டிய கதாபாத்திரம் அது. இந்த இரண்டு பகுதிகளையும் நேர்த்தியாக கையாண்டி துறுத்தல் இல்லாத நடிப்பை வெளிப்படுத்திய விதத்தில் கவனம் பெறுகிறார் ரக்‌ஷித் ஷெட்டி. பெரும் உழைப்பை படத்துக்காக கொட்டியிருக்கிறார். அவருக்கு இணையான எக்ஸ்பிரஷன்ஸ்களை வெளிப்படுத்தியிருக்கிறது சார்லியாக நடித்திருக்கும் நாய். உண்மையில், அதன் சோகமான முக பாவனைகளை நம்மை உருக்கிவிடுகிறது.

குறிப்பாக ரக்‌ஷித் ஷெட்டிக்கு நன்றி தெரிவிக்கும் இறுதிக்காட்சியில் நம்மை கலங்க வைத்துவிடுகிறது. நாய்க்கு சிறப்பான பயிற்சி அளித்து, படத்துக்கு தேவையானதை சமரசமின்றி வாங்கியிருக்கிறார் இயக்குநர் கிரண்ராஜ். தேவிகா கதாபாத்திரத்தில் நடித்திருக்கும் சங்கீதா, நடிப்பில் குறைவைக்கவில்லை என்றாலும், அவரால் படத்தில் குறை நிகழ்த்திருக்கிறது. அந்த கதாபாத்திரத்தை நீக்கியிருந்தால் படத்தில் எந்த பாதிப்பும் ஏற்பட்டிருக்காது. சொல்லப்போனால் இன்னும் சிறப்பாகவே வந்திருக்கும். வலிந்து திணித்தது கதையோட்டத்தை சீர்குலைத்திருக்கிறார்கள்.

இயக்குநர் கார்த்திக் சுப்புராஜ் படத்தை இயக்கினாலும், தயாரித்தாலும், ஏன் வெளியீட்டாலும் கூட பாபி சிம்ஹாவை எப்படியாவது நடிக்க வைத்துவிடுகிறார். ஒரு சில காட்சிகள் வந்தாலும் கவனம் பெறுகிறார் பாபி சிம்ஹா. கன்னடத்தில் வெளியாகி பெரும் வரவேற்பை பெற்ற 'கருட கமனா விருஷப வாகன' படத்தின் இயக்குநராகவும், ரவுடியாகவும் மிரட்டிய ராஜ் பி. ஷெட்டி இந்த படத்தில் காமெடி கதாபாத்திரத்தில் பொருந்திபோகிறார்.

மனிதனுக்கும் நாயுக்குமான உணர்வுகளை பிணைத்து திரைக்கதை ஆக்கம் பெற்றிருக்கிறது. முதல் பாதி முழுவதும் எந்தவித தடங்கலும் இல்லாமல் நீரோட்டம் போல பாய்கிறது. பொதுவாகவே இதுபோன்ற கதைக்களங்களில், நாயகன் எப்படியும் நாயை எடுத்து வளர்கப்போகிறான் என்பதும், அதனுடன் அன்பு பாராட்டுவதும் யூகிக்ககூடியதே. அப்படியான கதையில் சுவாரஸ்யமான உணர்வுப்பூர்வமான காட்சிகள் மூலம் திரைக்கதைக்கு பலம் சேர்த்திருக்கிறார் இயக்குநர். காமெடி, எமோஷனல், சோகம் என முதல் பாதியே ஒரு முழுமையான பேக்கேஜாக இருந்தது. ஆனால், அதே நம்பிக்கையில் இரண்டாம் பாதியைக் காண காத்திருந்தவர்களுக்கு பெரும் ஏமாற்றம். நாயகியின் தேவையற்ற இணைப்பு, தேவைற்ற பாடல்கள், ஆகியவை படத்தின் திரைக்கதையை பலவீனப்படுத்துகிறது.

தவிர, படத்தில் நம்மை கலங்க வைக்கும் நிறைய காட்சிகள் அழகாக கோர்க்கப்பட்டிருக்கின்றன. நாயகனை மருத்துவமனைக்கு அழைத்துச்செல்லும்போது, 'சொந்தக்காரங்க யாரும் வரலையா?' என கேட்கும்போது, 'பின்னாடி வராங்க' என்ற வாய்ஸ் ஓவரின்போது, நாய் துரத்தி வரும் காட்சி, நாய்களுக்கான போட்டி, இறுதிக்காட்சி என நெகிழவைத்துவிடுகிறது.

படத்திற்கு மிகப்பெரிய மைனஸ் பின்னணி இசை. இத்தனை உணர்வுப்பூர்வமான கதைக்கு, பொருந்தாத பின்னணி இசையால், தேவையான உணர்வை கடத்த முடியவில்லை. துண்டு துண்டாக வரும் ஏராளாமான பாடல்களும், அதன் இசையும் காட்சிக்கு சற்றும் பொருந்தவில்லை. இசையமைப்பாளர் நோபின் பால் கூடுதல் கவனம் செலுத்தியிருக்கலாம். பாரா க்ளைடிங், சார்லிக்கான மான்டேஜ் காட்சிகள் என அரவிந்த் காஷ்யப்பின் ஒளிப்பதிவு கவனம் ஈர்க்கிறது.

தொடக்கத்தில் நாயகனின் வழக்கமான வாழ்க்கை முறையை காட்ட உதவும் பிரதீக் ஷெட்டி கட் கச்சிதம். ஆனால், இன்னும் மனது வைத்து இரண்டாம் பாதியில் பெருமளவு காட்சிகளை குறைத்திருந்தால் கண்டிப்பாக பாராட்டியிருக்கலாம். 2 மணி நேரத்தில் முடிய வேண்டிய படத்தை 2.45 நிமிடம் இழுத்திருப்பது படத்துக்கு மைனஸ். நாய்களுக்கான இனப்பெருக்க முறையில் நிகழும் முறைகேடுகள், இன்பிரிடீங் எனப்படும் மோசமான நடவடிக்கைகள் குறித்த விழிப்புணர்வையும் படம் பதிவு செய்கிறது.

மொத்தமாக நெகிழ வைக்கும் உருக்கமான அன்பை கடத்தும் முயற்சியில் முதல் பாதிவரை வெற்றி பெற்று, இரண்டாம் பாதியில் தடுமாறியிருக்கும் படைப்பு. இருப்பினும் திரையரங்குகளுக்குச் சென்று பார்ப்பவர்களை சார்லி ஏமாற்றாதது என்பது உறுதி.

777 Charlie review: Rakshit Shetty’s film is a moving tale of bonding and companionship

777 charlie review: the rakshit shetty-starrer showcases an unusual bond between a man and his dog and takes us on a journey of growth and love with them..

When you walk out of debutant director Kiranraj’s 777 Charlie, it feels like you’ve witnessed an unlikely relationship drama between a human (Dharma) and his pet dog (Charlie, a Labrador). The relationship feels unlikely because of the bond Dharma and Charlie share, and it is purer and more unconditional than any human relationship. The way Charlie looks at Dharma and the instant connection one can see in its eyes, it’s almost impossible you can expect such a reaction from anyone else in her place, including a human counterpart. It’s these moments and the buildup to the latter half of the movie, which unfolds against the exotic backdrop of the Himalayas, that makes 777 Charlie a moving tale of bonding and companionship. The film’s plot is built on a very simple line--if you're lucky, a dog will come into your life, steal your heart, and change everything. Rakshit Shetty plays Dharma, a loner who has literally given up on life and himself. He drowns in his own misery and loneliness by living a life with no purpose as he finds solace in drinking. Enter Charlie, a female Labrador pup, and the two form an unexpected bond that takes them on a life-changing journey. From hating the sight of Charlie to spending his savings to take her on a trip, Dharma discovers the true purpose of his life.

This is a story of self-discovery for both Dharma and Charlie. With a beautiful tribute paid to Charlie Chaplin, the film takes its own time to make us root for the central characters. A lot of time is spent on making Charlie likable, and we see her transform from an uncontrollable brat of a dog to a caring, understanding companion. Charlie steals the limelight and how. It’s almost impossible to not melt and shed a tear or two when the camera zooms in on Charlie’s eyes which are filled with so much emotion. Her eyes emote so effectively than any other actor could have in her place, and all credit goes to her trainer and Rakshit for believing in this project and backing it up as a producer. It’s very rare to see the kind of bond Dharma and Charlie share in real life, let alone in a movie. It’s the scenes between them that really makes 777 Charlie an experience you shouldn’t miss at any cost.

The film has a nice sub-plot and message about adoption which gets conveyed strongly. There’s also another interesting sub-plot about the need for a companion in everyone’s life and it need not be a human. Through Charlie, not only Dharma finds a purpose in life but he also realizes the importance of companionship. Most of the film rests on the shoulders of Rakshit Shetty, who does a very convincing job of playing a role that’s stripped of all the elements that you associate with a mainstream hero.

777 Charlie Movie Review: Rakshit Shetty’s Emotional Roller Coaster Is A Story Of Love And Redemption

Every now and then we need a story which will make us believe in love and redemption. A new story, that will assuage our anxieties and alienation, that have become commonplace in a world fraught with unreasonable emphasis on social and material success, and tremendous suspicion and distrust of the other. I am glad to report that the latest movie from the Paramvah Studios – 777 Charlie – written and directed by the debutant Kiranraj K, with Rakshit Shetty and Charlie the dog in the lead, is one such story. It is also the first Kannada movie with a dog in the lead.

Dharma ( Rakshit Shetty ) works in a vehicle manufacturing factory and, scarred by a personal loss in childhood, leads a lonely life in Mysuru. He has built walls around him and is determined to go through the motions of life with a set routine involving his job, two idlis, alcohol, and cigarettes. But this lifeless existence of Dharma is disturbed by Charlie – a Labrador puppy who has escaped the clutches of an ill-treating breeder (A hark back to the 1992 film Beethoven ) and is trying to make a living on the streets. A freak accident to Charlie forces Dharma to take her in and a series of events unfold, including Dharma's failed attempts to give away Charlie in adoption, culminating in him realizing Charlie's unconditional love for him. Charlie's love begins to breathe life into Dharma. Soon, they become an inseparable duo. This short-lived bonhomie hits a new hurdle as Charlie is diagnosed with the fatal Hemangiosarcoma. Realizing that Charlie is short on time, Dharma sets off on a motorcycle journey, with Charlie in tow, across the country to fulfill Charlie's wish of playing with snow. What emerges from this, is an emotional roller coaster ride which is bound to make the audience laugh a little and cry a lot. While there is no doubt that the audience will happily embark on this emotional ride with Dharma and Charlie, some of them might feel this journey is a little too long. 

The first half of the movie focuses on building the bond between the two and uses the time-tested tropes of a comical veterinarian with a thick Mangalorean accent ( Raj B Shetty ), Charlie turning Dharma's life upside down with his naughty adventures, and a cute little neighborhood girl who is in love with the dog, to create entertaining sequences. The mise-en-scene of Dharma's home has several references to Charlie Chaplin's work – at one point " A Dog's Life " is playing on TV and the climax speech of " The Great Dictator " can be heard at another – and other dog films like " 101 Dalmatians ". Although well written and performed, my experience of the first half was marred by unnecessary attempts – marked by action sequences like editing and sound design – to create sophistication. In contrast, in the road movie like the second half, the technical aspects fall into place but the narrative is adversely affected by the unnecessarily long digressions such as the Devika-Dharma encounter which came across as a half-baked attempt to create a romantic track. The characters of Devika (Sangeetha Sringeri) and Vamsi (Bobby Simha) left much to be desired for. 

Halfway through, the second half abruptly attempts to transcend into the spiritual with temples, monasteries, and references to Dharmaraya. In line with this, the climax is set in a small temple dotting the otherwise barren snow-filled landscape and is intended to be the completion of Dharma's journey of redemption. 

Rakshit Shetty is brilliant as the rugged and lifeless Dharma in the first half but falls a little short in the emotional sequences – especially the climax scene in the snowy mountains. Raj B Shetty is hilarious – albeit stereotypical – as the Vet. (A special shout-out to his cool shirts featuring dogs). But undoubtedly, the hero of the movie is Charlie; it is impossible to turn away from the screen whenever the camera is on her. 

In a welcome departure, the soundtrack of 777 Charlie is multilingual (a hat tip to Nobin Paul) with English, Hindi, and Konkani (Goan folk) songs in addition to Kannada, with artists across India contributing. Also, it is a relief to listen to characters like Bobby Simha, the army officers, and other people Dharma and Charlie meet in their journey, talk in their natural languages. Of course, it does not miss me that the multiple language release of the movie has something to do with these choices. 

Now to the most important part – In a rare occurrence in Indian cinema, 777 Charlie is conscious of the issues with pets in India and gets the politics mostly right. The narrative choice of Charlie's disease points to the rampant practice of inbreeding amongst breeders in India; the issue of gated communities and housing colonies prohibiting pets is used to create conflict between Dharma and other residents, and in a fleeting scene where the mother asks her child not to touch Charlie after noticing lesions on his body foregrounds our bias against pets suffering from an illness. But ironically, for a movie which ends with a message flashing across the screen asking people to adopt dogs, Dharma is shown with a just-born puppy – presumably Charlie's (?) – in the climax. Many animal welfare personnel will cringe at the dog show sequence as it is well known that unreasonable enthusiasm for dog shows can adversely impact the lives of our pets. Also, how about featuring some Indian streeties in an Indian movie about dogs, please? 

777 Charlie – the first Kannada movie with a dog in the lead – is a feel-good entertainer which will appeal to each and everyone. Important advice to all dog lovers though – do not forget to carry sufficient tissues and handkerchiefs.

ஆனால், நாய்க்கும் மனிதனுக்கும் இடையே இருக்கும் நட்பை காட்டிய விதத்தில் இயக்குநர் மெய்சிலிர்க்க வைத்து விட்டார்.

சிறு வயதிலேயே விபத்து ஒன்றில் பெற்றோரையும் குடும்பத்தையும் இழந்து விடுகிறார் நாயகன் தர்மா (ரக்‌ஷித் ஷெட்டி). தனிமையில் தன் போக்கில் வளர்ந்து வரும் தர்மாவிடம் வந்து ஒட்டிக் கொள்கிறது ஒரு குட்டி பெண் நாய். ஆனால், அவனுக்கு அது கொஞ்சம் கூட பிடிக்கவில்லை. ஆனாலும், அவனை விடாமல் அவன் கூடவே பழக ஆரம்பிக்க அவனும் அதை தன்னுடன் இருக்க அனுமதிக்கிறான். ஒரு கட்டத்தில் அந்த நாய்க்கு புற்றுநோய் என்பது தெரியவர அதன் கடைசி ஆசையை நிறைவேற்ற நாயகன் மேற்கொள்ளும் பயணம் தான் இந்த 777 சார்லி படத்தின் கதை.

நாய் படங்கள்

பொதுவாகவே செல்லப்பிராணிகளை குறிப்பாக நாய்களை வைத்து இயக்கும் படங்கள் லோ பட்ஜெட்டில் உருவாக்கப்படும். ஆனால், ஹாலிவுட் படங்களுக்கு இணையாக அதற்கான பட்ஜெட்டை ஒதுக்கி பிரம்மாண்டமாக காட்சிப்படுத்திய நிலையில், தான் கர்நாடக முதலமைச்சர் பசவராஜ் பொம்மையையே இந்த படம் கண் கலங்க வைத்தது என்பது குறிப்பிடத்தக்கது. இயக்குநர் கிரண்ராஜும் கண்டிப்பாக ஒரு டாக் லவ்வராகத்தான் இருப்பார் என ரசிகர்கள் கூறி வருகின்றனர். லாபரடார் வகை நாய்க்கு பயிற்சியளித்த பிரமோத்த்க்கும் பாராட்டுக்கள் குவிந்துள்ளன.

டிராவல் படம்

புற்றுநோயால் பாதிக்கப்பட்ட தனது செல்லப்பிராணியின் கடைசி ஆசையை நிறைவேற்ற பனி பிரேதசங்களுக்கு அழைத்துச் சென்று சாகசங்களை செய்யும் காட்சிகள் எல்லாம் நாமும் அவர்களுடன் டிராவல் செய்வது போன்ற உணர்வை கடத்திச் செல்கிறது. ஒளிப்பதிவாளார் அரவிந்த் கஷ்யப் அட்டகாசப்படுத்தி உள்ளார்.

ஹீரோ ரக்‌ஷித் ஷெட்டியுடன் நட்பாக பழகும் அந்த நாய் ஒரு காட்சியில் கூட அது ஏதோ செய்வதை வைத்து படம் எடுத்திருக்கிறார்கள் என்கிற உணர்வையே தராமல் தேர்ச்சி பெற்ற நடிகர்கள் கதாபாத்திரமாகவே வாழும் உணர்வை ரசிகர்களுக்கு கொடுத்து, தங்களின் செல்லப் பிராணிகளை நினைத்து கலங்க வைத்திருப்பது படத்திற்கு மிகப்பெரிய பலமாக அமைந்துள்ளது. பின்னணி இசை, புரொடக்‌ஷன் டீம் என பலரும் நேர்த்தியாக பணியாற்றி உள்ளது தெரிகிறது. கன்னட திரையுலகில் கேஜிஎஃப் 2 படத்திற்கு பிறகு இந்த ஆண்டு இன்னுமொரு தரமான படமாக 777 சார்லி தலை நிமிர்ந்து நிற்கிறது என தாராளமாக சொல்லலாம்.

இந்த படத்திற்கு வில்லன் வைக்க வேண்டும் என்கிற ரீதியில், பேராசையுடன் நாய்களை ப்ரீட் செய்யும் ஒரு சினிமாத்தனமான வில்லன் வரும் காட்சிகள் அந்த அளவுக்கு ஒட்டவில்லை என்று தான் சொல்ல வேண்டும். மேலும், படத்தின் நீளத்தை இன்னும் கொஞ்சம் குறைத்திருந்தால் க்ரிஸ்ப்பாக அமைந்திருக்கும். மற்றபடி, நாய்க்குட்டி பிரியர்களை மட்டுமின்றி வெகுஜன ரசிகர்களையும் இந்த படம் நிச்சயம் என்டர்டெயின் செய்யும் என்பதில் எந்தவொரு சந்தேகமும் இல்லை.

777 Charlie is a film written and directed by K Kiranraj and produced by Rakshit Shetty and GS Gupta under the banner Paramvah Studios. The film stars Rakshit Shetty and a labrador dog in the lead roles while Sangeetha Sringeri, Raj B Shetty and others appear in crucial supporting roles. It has music by Nobin Paul and cinematography by Aravind Kashyap.

Rakshit Shetty plays the role of Dharma who is stuck in a monotonous life. Or to put it Dharma's own words, his life revolves around the factory, idly, beer and cigarettes. One day, he finds an abandoned dog in front of his house and is forced to take care of it due to certain circumstances. Soon the dog becomes an integral part of his life. The rest of the film deals with their adventures together.

There's a popular quote - "The most complicated skill is to be simple". And it seems director Kiranraj has understood this perfectly. Be it the writing or the treatment, if there's one word that fits 777 Charlie, it has to be 'simple'. The straightforward nature of the film makes it easy for the audiences to connect to the characters and the emotions.

There's a line in the film where Dharma scolds Charlie by asking "Why is it always eating and sleeping, and not doing anything else." Before Charlie enters Dharma's life, that's exactly what Dharma was also doing. The impact created by Charlie in Dharma's life can be summed up in this single line. The film also follows the Chekhov's Gun rule in its screenplay.

The casting of the film is on point, with every single role creating an impact irrespective of the screen time they have. Rakshit Shetty as Dharma comes up with a soul-stirring performance, and so does Charlie the dog. The chemistry between the two is impeccable and at times their performances make you cry your heart out. Among the supporting roles Raj B Shetty impresses as the veterinary doctor.

The music by Nobin Paul creates a perfect mood and elevates the scenes to a whole new level. The film has been cut in a slick manner by Prateek Shetty, and cinematographer Aravind Kashyap is impressive as well. The scenes involving the snow in the second half are shot beautifully like a travelogue at the same time conveying the emotions between the man and the dog perfectly.

Overall, the film also has a good message about adopting dogs, and on a deeper level it also creates awareness about the dangers of inbreeding of dogs. With terrific performances and solid technical work, the film is simple, engaging, and entertaining. Rakshit Shetty is known for experimenting a lot with films, and sometimes choosing to be grounded and simple throughout turns out to be an experiment as well. Here, it's quite successful as well.

ரக்ஷித் ஷெட்டி சிறு வயதிலேயே தனது பெற்றோர், தங்கை ஆகியோரை விபத்தில் இழந்தவர். உறவு, நட்பு என எதுவும் இல்லாமல் வீட்டில் தனியாக வசிக்கிறார். வேலை பார்க்கும் கம்பெனி, வீடு என அவருடைய வாழ்க்கை போய்க் கொண்டிருக்கிறது. அப்படிப்பட்டவரிடம் எங்கிருந்தோ வரும் ஒரு நாய் யதேச்சையாக அடைக்கலம் ஆகிறது. முதலில் அந்த நாயை வெறுக்கும் ரக்ஷித் போகப் போக அந்த நாய் இல்லாமல் தானில்லை என்ற நிலைக்கு வருகிறார். அந்த சமயத்தில் நாய்க்கு கேன்சர் பாதிப்பு வருகிறது. கொஞ்ச நாட்கள்தான் அது உயிருடன் இருக்கும் என்கிறார் கால்நடை மருத்துவர். அதற்குள் அந்த நாயின் ஆசை ஒன்றை நிறைவேற்ற முயல்கிறார் ரக்ஷித். அது நடந்ததால் இல்லையா என்பதுதான் படத்தின் மீதிக் கதை. 2019ல் கன்னடத்திலிருந்து தமிழுக்கு வந்த “அவனே ஸ்ரீமன் நாராயணனா'' படத்தின் மூலம் ஓரளவிற்கு அறியப்பட்டவர் இப்படத்தின் கதாநாயகன் ரக்ஷித் ஷெட்டி. இந்தப் படத்தில் ஒரு உணர்வுபூர்வமான கதாபாத்திரத்தில் நடித்து காட்சிக்குக் காட்சி உருக வைக்கிறார். வாழ்க்கையில் எந்த ஒரு பிடிப்பும் இல்லாமல் வாழ்பவருக்கு ஒரு நாய் பிடிப்பாக வருகிறது. அந்த நாய் தன்னுடைய வாழ்க்கையில் ஏற்படுத்திய மாற்றங்களை உணர்ந்து நடித்து உருக வைக்கிறார் ரக்ஷித். ஆசையாக வளர்க்கும் நாய் இன்னும் கொஞ்ச நாளில் இறந்துவிடும் என மருத்துவர் சொல்ல அதிர்ச்சியடைகிறார். டிவி பார்க்கும் போது பனிப்பிரதேசத்தைப் பார்த்து அந்த நாய் அடையும் மகிழ்ச்சியை ஏற்கெனவே பார்த்தவர், அந்த இடத்திற்கு நாயை அழைத்துச் சென்று மகிழ்ச்சிப்படுத்த நினைக்கிறார். அதற்காக அவர் எடுக்கும் ஒவ்வொரு முயற்சியும் நெகிழ்ச்சிக்கு உத்தரவாதம். நாய் சார்லியின் நடிப்பைப் பார்க்கும் போது அதற்கு பயிற்சி கொடுத்த பிரமோத்தைப் பாராட்டியே ஆக வேண்டும். நாய் செய்யும் சேட்டைகளைப் பார்த்து அடடா, நாமும் இப்படி ஒரு நாயை வளர்க்க வேண்டும் என்று படம் பார்க்கும் பலருக்கும் தோன்றும். அடிக்கடி முன்னங்கால்களைத் தூக்கி ரக்ஷித் மீது காட்டும் பாசத்திற்கு நாமும் அடிமையாகிவிடுகிறோம். இடைவேளைக்குப் பின்னர் நாய் மீது நமக்கு அப்படி ஒரு அனுதாபம் வந்துவிடுகிறது. அதற்கு ஒன்றும் ஆகிவிடக் கூடாது என படம் பார்ப்பவர்கள் 'உச்' கொட்டும் அளவிற்கு காட்சிகள் அமைந்திருக்கிறது. படத்தில் ரக்ஷித்திற்கும், நாய்க்கும் மட்டும்தான் அதிக முக்கியத்துவம். விலங்கு நல வாரிய அதிகாரியாக வரும் சங்கீதா சிருங்கேரியை படத்தின் நாயகி என்று சொல்லிக் கொள்ளலாம். டாக்டராக ராஜ் பி ஷெட்டி, சிறப்புத் தோற்றத்தில் பாபி சிம்ஹா, சிறுமி அத்ரிகாவாக ஷர்வரி கொஞ்சமே வந்தாலும் மனதில் நிற்கிறார்கள். படத்திற்கு நோபின் பால் பின்னணி இசை, அரவிந்த் காஷ்யப் ஒளிப்பதிவு, பிரதீக் ஷெட்டியின் படத்தொகுப்பு பக்கபலமாக அமைந்துள்ளது. இடைவேளைக்குப் பிறகான படத்தின் நீளம்தான் படத்திற்கான மைனஸ் ஆகத் தெரிகிறது. குடும்பத்துடன், குட்டீஸ்களுடன் பார்த்து ரசிக்க வேண்டிய ஒரு படம் '777 சார்லி'. 777 சார்லி - பேரன்பு

777 Charlie Movie Review: A celebration of unconditional love and loyalty

In The Great Dictator , Charlie Chaplin says, "In this world, there is room for everyone. And the good Earth is rich and can provide for everyone. The way of life can be free and beautiful, but... we have lost the way." These words echo true even after eight decades, and it is these words that fuel the journey of Dharma and Charlie, the leads of Kiranraj's heartwarming adventure drama, 777 Charlie .

While Hollywood frequently celebrates human-animal bonding in their films, Indian cinema doesn't really go all out at it. For instance, dogs are predominantly either used in revenge dramas where they do over-the-top things like plot with other animals to avenge their master's death or just appear in cameos in investigative thrillers sniffing out the clues to nab the bad guys. We might remember director Dinesh Baboo, who was one of the first filmmakers to use a dog as a pivotal character in his film, Nishabdha . Recently, we saw Naanu Mathu Gunda , which did have a nuanced portrayal of human-animal bonding. But the strong emotional core of 777 Charlie makes Kiranraj's debut directorial stand tall. 

The film is about Dharma (Rakshit Shetty), a loner with a past, who is forlorn, aggressive, and takes to the bottle like a fish to water. He is derisively mocked as 'Hitler' by his neighbours and at his workplace. When a stray dog (Charlie) enters Dharma's life, things take an interesting, hilarious, and many a time, emotional turn. However, things start off patchy between Dharma and Charlie. From seeking help from veterinarian Ashwin Kumar (Raj B Shetty) to get leads for an adoption to Devika (Sangeetha Sringeri), an officer at an animal welfare centre, who gives Charlie the name, there are characters that come in at the right time to facilitate the bond between Dharma and Charlie. 

From looking for ways to let go of Charlie, to making him the most integral part of his life, Dharma's life takes a positive U-turn that enriches his life. However, circumstances and narrative choices make his happiness short-lived, and from here, 777 Charlie becomes an adventure drama that sees Dharma and Charlie go on expeditions across the country. From the snow-capped mountains in the Himalayas and the people-filled landscape of many other places, 777 Charlie takes us on a journey that reaffirms the belief in unconditional love, and how a dog named Charlie just changed the lives of many due to the purity of its heart. 

At a time when high-octane action films are ruling the roost, Kiranraj convincingly reminds us to open our hearts to heartwarming but simple stories. While there are scenes that needed a bit more fleshing out, some of these flaws can be ignored because of the heart of the director that is seen through each and every scene of this almost 3-hour-long film. 

Dharma isn't a one-dimensional character, and Rakshit strikes a superb balance in portraying the role and its various shades. He plays off Charlie, whose soul and spontaneity, make you want to consider having such a companion for yourself. Their equation is definitely the soul of the film and it is amusing, evocative, and manages to wring out tears with ease. 

Although the film is essentially about Dharma and Charlie, the presence of other people in this world aids in the personal development of Dharma. Be it the hilarious cameo of Raj B Shetty or the precocious young child Ardika (Sharvai), who is the first friendly person to Dharma and Charlie, and the assuredness of Sangeetha Sringeri's Devika, each character gets to play a vital role in 777 Charlie . In fact, even if the duration of the character was small, Tamil actor Bobby Simha's cameo as a loner with a dog is instrumental in Dharma realising his life has come a full circle. 

One of the biggest strengths of 777 Charlie is definitely the hardworking technical team, which not just overcame logistical challenges but ensured the quality of work delivered was on point. If the music of Nobin Paul elevates the road-trip film, then cinematographer Aravind Kashyap's work, especially in the Himalayan portions of 777 Charlie , makes the film into one for the ages.

Watching animals come into the life of humans to make the latter better might not be a new story after all, but in a world like ours, and in times like these, it is uplifting to see a film like 777 Charlie where unconditional love and loyalty from animals show us how within all humans, there is the propensity to be... well... loving. 

777 Charlie is definitely an ode to dog lovers and Kiranraj, Rakshit and Co have crafted it in such a way that even if you are not one, watching this film just might make you revisit that stance.

FILMFARE FAME AT LAST

2022 global hit film, “ RRR ” won the award for the best film in the Telugu language at the delayed Filmfare South awards. For their performances in “RRR,” N.T.R. Jr and Ram Charan were named as winners in the best leading actor category and S.S. Rajamouli won best director.

For Kannada cinema, Kiranraj K. was awarded the best director award for “777 Charlie,” while “Kantara” was named the best film.

TRIGGER HAPPY

The Mulan International Film Festival has set “Love Is a Gun,” directed by Taiwanese actor and director Lee Hong-Chi , as its opening title. At Venice last year, the film won the prestigious Lion of the Future – “Luigi de Laurentiis” Venice Award for a Debut Film. It recounts the story of Sweet Potato, portrayed by Lee who returns to his hometown after serving time in prison. Seeking redemption, he rents sunshades on the beach while attempting to secure a “good citizen” certificate for employment in the city. However, his past catches up with him through old acquaintances.

The festival runs Aug. 9 to 17, in Toronto, Canada.
