Mother Teresa was recognised for her work both in India as well as in other countries. She received Padma Shri, Jawaharlal Nehru Award, and the highest civilian honour of all, the Bharat Ratna by the Indian government. In 1979, she was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for her work. Mother Teresa was granted several honorary citizenship and degrees as well as many civilian prizes for promoting peace and humanity.

M other Teresa was born Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu in Uskup, Ottoman Empire (now Skopje, North Macedonia), on August 26, 1910. Her family was of Albanian descent. At the age of twelve, she felt strongly the call of God. She knew she had to be a missionary to spread the love of Christ. At the age of eighteen she left her parental home in Skopje and joined the Sisters of Loreto, an Irish community of nuns with missions in India. After a few months’ training in Dublin she was sent to India, where on May 24, 1931, she took her initial vows as a nun. From 1931 to 1948 Mother Teresa taught at St. Mary’s High School in Calcutta, but the suffering and poverty she glimpsed outside the convent walls made such a deep impression on her that in 1948 she received permission from her superiors to leave the convent school and devote herself to working among the poorest of the poor in the slums of Calcutta. Although she had no funds, she depended on Divine Providence, and started an open-air school for slum children. Soon she was joined by voluntary helpers, and financial support was also forthcoming. This made it possible for her to extend the scope of her work.

On October 7, 1950, Mother Teresa received permission from the Holy See to start her own order, “The Missionaries of Charity”, whose primary task was to love and care for those persons nobody was prepared to look after. In 1965 the Society became an International Religious Family by a decree of Pope Paul VI.

Today the order comprises Active and Contemplative branches of Sisters and Brothers in many countries. In 1963 both the Contemplative branch of the Sisters and the Active branch of the Brothers was founded. In 1979 the Contemplative branch of the Brothers was added, and in 1984 the Priest branch was established.

The Society of Missionaries has spread all over the world, including the former Soviet Union and Eastern European countries. They provide effective help to the poorest of the poor in a number of countries in Asia, Africa, and Latin America, and they undertake relief work in the wake of natural catastrophes such as floods, epidemics, and famine, and for refugees. The order also has houses in North America, Europe and Australia, where they take care of the shut-ins, alcoholics, homeless, and AIDS sufferers.

The Missionaries of Charity throughout the world are aided and assisted by Co-Workers who became an official International Association on March 29, 1969. By the 1990s there were over one million Co-Workers in more than 40 countries. Along with the Co-Workers, the lay Missionaries of Charity try to follow Mother Teresa’s spirit and charism in their families.

Mother Teresa’s work has been recognised and acclaimed throughout the world and she has received a number of awards and distinctions, including the Pope John XXIII Peace Prize (1971) and the Nehru Prize for her promotion of international peace and understanding (1972). She also received the Balzan Prize (1979) and the Templeton and Magsaysay awards.

She made the entire nation cry in her memory. After her death, many poor, needy, homeless and weak people lost their ‘mother’ for the second time. Several memorials were made in her name both in and outside the country.

The death of Mother Teresa was the end of an era. In the starting days of her work, it was quite a difficult task for her to manage and give education to poor children. But she managed those tough missions delicately. She used to teach poor children with the help of a stick by writing on the ground. Agnesë Gonxhe Bojaxhiu, better known as Mother Teresa, was born in today’s capital of North Macedonia, Skopje, in August 1910. However, the date of birth of Mother Teresa is still an issue of a robust discussion. Her parents were of Albanian descent, even though, back in 1910, an Albanian state did not exist yet. It was part of the Ottoman Empire until 1912 when the Republic of Albania declared its independence. Although Mother Teresa was Albanian, she had not visited Albania until 1989 (Endresen 53). The reason for this was Albanian officials who refused to issue her a visa. Once the Communist regime fell, the problem solved itself. In her early years, Mother Teresa understood that her mission was to spread the love of Jesus Christ. When she was eighteen, she decided to join a Catholic congregation called “the Sisters of Loreto,” which sent missions to India. Having taken a mandatory training in Dublin, Mother Teresa went to India where she finally made her vows as a nun.

In Calcutta, Mother Teresa was teaching at the school from 1931 to 1948. During these years, she noticed that outside the walls of the convent, ordinary poor people were suffering a lot. This observation was an incentive that made Mother Teresa ask for permission from her congregation to devote herself to helping most marginalized people in Calcutta. First, she started an open-air school, but soon other people, who cared about vulnerable residents of Calcutta, joined her. In 1950, Mother Teresa founded her order called The Missionaries of Charity . Fifteen years after, the congregation received a decree of the Pope, which made the work of the order possible in other countries of the world. Overall, she was a well-respected person who committed herself to help less privileged people. Mother Teresa turned her entire life into a commitment to serve people and ease the sufferings of the most vulnerable ones. She saw the inequalities, but, compared to most people, she started to make her contribution to improving the lives of people living in misery all around the world. She is one of the few examples of human beings who sacrificed their lives for the common good. Mother Teresa was a person with a clear vision of how society should look like and what kind of experiences all people should be able to have. Her understanding of existing injustices was deep, profound, and non-hypocritical. From the early beginning of her independent activity, she made it clear for all the people working with her, that the conditions of living should be the same for both helpers and people in need of help.

Her vision was also clear in terms of differences between the societies in developed countries and developing ones. Mother Teresa was well aware of what problems were wide-spread in certain communities, so she kept her mind open to new issues and challenges. Her Charity was asked to come to help people in various corners of the world, so it can be argued with certainty that Mother Teresa was a citizen of the world, as she genuinely aspired to help people everywhere.

Due to her inspiring work, many women joined The Missionaries of Charity to serve the poorest of the poor. By the 1990s, there were established representations of the Charity in 123 countries of the world, including former Communist states such as Russia, Albania, etc. (Metaxas 112). She not only overcame the differences between wealthy societies of the Global North and South but also between two political blocks.

Mother Teresa also took up the initiatives on the issues neglected by others, even the government. For example, she opened a leaper asylum in Calcutta when there were more than 30 000 people afflicted with leprosy in Calcutta about whom nobody really cared. The government was not always on her side, so in the case of a leaper asylum, she was forced to evacuate all the patients. However, Mother Teresa wasn’t a person who would easily give up, she started a fundraising campaign, and when she accumulated enough resources, she founded a mobile leprosy clinic. Furthermore, Mother Teresa opened similar houses for people with HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis. She traveled to conflict-torn areas to rescue children and move them from demolished hospitals.

Mother Teresa was a good leader who skillfully conveyed her ideas to the general public all around the world. Even though she held strong beliefs in Catholicism, as she was a Catholic nun, her view overcame the borders of one religion and appealed to very different people from distant places of the Earth. Charisma was Mother Teresa’s gift from God as she couldn’t but attracted the attention of media from the very start of her career. In 1968, Malcolm Muggeridge decided to interview Mother Teresa for the BBC (Metaxas). Thanks to this interview on BBC, Mother Teresa obtained world fame.

Despite all the praising words about Mother Teresa, she received a lot of criticism during and after her lifetime. For example, even though the Catholic church recognized Mother Teresa as a saint, not every Catholic agreed with the decision. Some people believe that she had not done enough for the church as she didn’t try to convert people (Donohue). There is also an idea that such famous examples as Mother Teresa may discourage ordinary people from making their contribution in any form of charity (Morin et al.). However, considering Mother Teresa’s Charity from a humanitarian point of view, one can argue that human interests and life matter more than the benefits of any particular religion.

The work of mother Teresa has been inspiring for people all around the world. She is a classic example of a person who devoted her life to helping people in need. Mother Teresa contributed to the elevation of many people’s miseries daily. However, her way of life is not free of criticism, as there are many aspects in her work which could have been improved. What is clear in spite of all these ambiguities surrounding Mother Teresa’s figure is that her example will continue living on and encouraging people of the world to do better for themselves and people around them.

Mother Teresa was the founder of the Order of the Missionaries of Charity, a Roman Catholic congregation of women dedicated to helping the poor. Considered one of the 20th Century's greatest humanitarians, she was canonized as Saint Teresa of Calcutta in 2016.

Who Was Mother Teresa?

Nun and missionary Mother Teresa, known in the Catholic church as Saint Teresa of Calcutta, devoted her life to caring for the sick and poor. Born in Macedonia to parents of Albanian-descent and having taught in India for 17 years, Mother Teresa experienced her "call within a call" in 1946. Her order established a hospice; centers for the blind, aged and disabled; and a leper colony.

Mother Teresa’s Family and Young Life

Mother Teresa was born on August 26, 1910, in Skopje, the current capital of the Republic of Macedonia. The following day, she was baptized as Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu.

Mother Teresa’s parents, Nikola and Dranafile Bojaxhiu, were of Albanian descent; her father was an entrepreneur who worked as a construction contractor and a trader of medicines and other goods. The Bojaxhius were a devoutly Catholic family, and Nikola was deeply involved in the local church as well as in city politics as a vocal proponent of Albanian independence.

In 1919, when Mother Teresa — then Agnes — was only eight years old, her father suddenly fell ill and died. While the cause of his death remains unknown, many have speculated that political enemies poisoned him.

In the aftermath of her father's death, Agnes became extraordinarily close to her mother, a pious and compassionate woman who instilled in her daughter a deep commitment to charity. Although by no means wealthy, Drana Bojaxhiu extended an open invitation to the city's destitute to dine with her family. "My child, never eat a single mouthful unless you are sharing it with others," she counseled her daughter. When Agnes asked who the people eating with them were, her mother uniformly responded, "Some of them are our relations, but all of them are our people."

Education and Nunhood

Agnes attended a convent-run primary school and then a state-run secondary school. As a girl, she sang in the local Sacred Heart choir and was often asked to sing solos. The congregation made an annual pilgrimage to the Church of the Black Madonna in Letnice, and it was on one such trip at the age of 12 that she first felt a calling to religious life. Six years later, in 1928, an 18-year-old Agnes Bojaxhiu decided to become a nun and set off for Ireland to join the Sisters of Loreto in Dublin. It was there that she took the name Sister Mary Teresa after Saint Thérèse of Lisieux.

A year later, Sister Mary Teresa traveled on to Darjeeling, India, for the novitiate period; in May 1931, she made her First Profession of Vows. Afterward, she was sent to Calcutta, where she was assigned to teach at Saint Mary's High School for Girls, a school run by the Loreto Sisters and dedicated to teaching girls from the city's poorest Bengali families. Sister Teresa learned to speak both Bengali and Hindi fluently as she taught geography and history and dedicated herself to alleviating the girls' poverty through education.

On May 24, 1937, she took her Final Profession of Vows to a life of poverty, chastity and obedience. As was the custom for Loreto nuns, she took on the title of "Mother" upon making her final vows and thus became known as Mother Teresa. Mother Teresa continued to teach at Saint Mary's, and in 1944 she became the school's principal. Through her kindness, generosity and unfailing commitment to her students' education, she sought to lead them to a life of devotion to Christ. "Give me the strength to be ever the light of their lives, so that I may lead them at last to you," she wrote in prayer.

'Call Within a Call'

On September 10, 1946, Mother Teresa experienced a second calling, the "call within a call" that would forever transform her life. She was riding in a train from Calcutta to the Himalayan foothills for a retreat when she said Christ spoke to her and told her to abandon teaching to work in the slums of Calcutta aiding the city's poorest and sickest people.

Since Mother Teresa had taken a vow of obedience, she could not leave her convent without official permission. After nearly a year and a half of lobbying, in January 1948 she finally received approval to pursue this new calling. That August, donning the blue-and-white sari that she would wear in public for the rest of her life, she left the Loreto convent and wandered out into the city. After six months of basic medical training, she voyaged for the first time into Calcutta's slums with no more specific a goal than to aid "the unwanted, the unloved, the uncared for."

Missionaries of Charity

Mother Teresa quickly translated her calling into concrete actions to help the city's poor. She began an open-air school and established a home for the dying destitute in a dilapidated building she convinced the city government to donate to her cause. In October 1950, she won canonical recognition for a new congregation, the Missionaries of Charity, which she founded with only a handful of members—most of them former teachers or pupils from St. Mary's School.

As the ranks of her congregation swelled and donations poured in from around India and across the globe, the scope of Mother Teresa's charitable activities expanded exponentially. Over the course of the 1950s and 1960s, she established a leper colony, an orphanage, a nursing home, a family clinic and a string of mobile health clinics.

In 1971, Mother Teresa traveled to New York City to open her first American-based house of charity, and in the summer of 1982, she secretly went to Beirut, Lebanon, where she crossed between Christian East Beirut and Muslim West Beirut to aid children of both faiths. In 1985, Mother Teresa returned to New York and spoke at the 40th anniversary of the United Nations General Assembly. While there, she also opened Gift of Love, a home to care for those infected with HIV/AIDS.

Mother Teresa’s Awards and Recognition

In February 1965, Pope Paul VI bestowed the Decree of Praise upon the Missionaries of Charity, which prompted Mother Teresa to begin expanding internationally. By the time of her death in 1997, the Missionaries of Charity numbered more than 4,000 — in addition to thousands more lay volunteers — with 610 foundations in 123 countries around the world.

The Decree of Praise was just the beginning, as Mother Teresa received various honors for her tireless and effective charity. She was awarded the Jewel of India, the highest honor bestowed on Indian civilians, as well as the now-defunct Soviet Union's Gold Medal of the Soviet Peace Committee. In 1979, Mother Teresa was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in recognition of her work "in bringing help to suffering humanity."

Criticism of Mother Teresa

Despite this widespread praise, Mother Teresa's life and work have not gone without its controversies. In particular, she has drawn criticism for her vocal endorsement of some of the Catholic Church's more controversial doctrines, such as opposition to contraception and abortion. "I feel the greatest destroyer of peace today is abortion," Mother Teresa said in her 1979 Nobel lecture.

In 1995, she publicly advocated a "no" vote in the Irish referendum to end the country's constitutional ban on divorce and remarriage. The most scathing criticism of Mother Teresa can be found in Christopher Hitchens' book The Missionary Position: Mother Teresa in Theory and Practice , in which Hitchens argued that Mother Teresa glorified poverty for her own ends and provided a justification for the preservation of institutions and beliefs that sustained widespread poverty.

When and How Mother Teresa Died

After several years of deteriorating health, including heart, lung and kidney problems, Mother Teresa died on September 5, 1997, at the age of 87.

Mother Teresa’s Letters

In 2003, the publication of Mother Teresa’s private correspondence caused a wholesale re-evaluation of her life by revealing the crisis of faith she suffered for most of the last 50 years of her life.

In one despairing letter to a confidant, she wrote, "Where is my Faith—even deep down right in there is nothing, but emptiness & darkness—My God—how painful is this unknown pain—I have no Faith—I dare not utter the words & thoughts that crowd in my heart—& make me suffer untold agony." While such revelations are shocking considering her public image, they have also made Mother Teresa a more relatable and human figure to all those who experience doubt in their beliefs.

Mother Teresa’s Miracles and Canonization

In 2002, the Vatican recognized a miracle involving an Indian woman named Monica Besra, who said she was cured of an abdominal tumor through Mother Teresa's intercession on the one-year anniversary of her death in 1998. She was beatified (declared in heaven) as "Blessed Teresa of Calcutta" on October 19, 2003, by Pope John Paul II .

On December 17, 2015, Pope Francis issued a decree that recognized a second miracle attributed to Mother Teresa, clearing the way for her to be canonized as a saint of the Roman Catholic Church. The second miracle involved the healing of Marcilio Andrino, a Brazilian man who was diagnosed with a viral brain infection and lapsed into a coma. His wife, family and friends prayed to Mother Teresa, and when the man was brought to the operating room for emergency surgery, he woke up without pain and was cured of his symptoms, according to a statement from the Missionaries of Charity Father.

Mother Teresa was canonized as a saint on September 4, 2016, a day before the 19th anniversary of her death. Pope Francis led the canonization mass, which was held in St. Peter's Square in Vatican City. Tens of thousands of Catholics and pilgrims from around the world attended the canonization to celebrate the woman who had been called “the saint of the gutters” during her lifetime because of her charitable work with the poor.

“After due deliberation and frequent prayer for divine assistance, and having sought the counsel of many of our brother bishops, we declare and define Blessed Teresa of Calcutta to be a saint, and we enroll her among the saints, decreeing that she is to be venerated as such by the whole church,” Pope Francis said in Latin.

The Pope spoke about Mother Teresa’s life of service in the homily. ”Mother Teresa, in all aspects of her life, was a generous dispenser of divine mercy, making herself available for everyone through her welcome and defense of human life, those unborn and those abandoned and discarded," he said. "She bowed down before those who were spent, left to die on the side of the road, seeing in them their God-given dignity. She made her voice heard before the powers of this world, so that they might recognize their guilt for the crime of poverty they created."

He also told the faithful to follow her example and practice compassion. “Mercy was the salt which gave flavor to her work, it was the light which shone in the darkness of the many who no longer had tears to shed for their poverty and suffering,” he said, adding. "May she be your model of holiness."

Since her death, Mother Teresa has remained in the public spotlight. For her unwavering commitment to aiding those most in need, Mother Teresa stands out as one of the greatest humanitarians of the 20th century. She combined profound empathy and a fervent commitment to her cause with incredible organizational and managerial skills that allowed her to develop a vast and effective international organization of missionaries to help impoverished citizens all across the globe.

Despite the enormous scale of her charitable activities and the millions of lives she touched, to her dying day, she held only the most humble conception of her own achievements. Summing up her life in characteristically self-effacing fashion, Mother Teresa said, "By blood, I am Albanian. By citizenship, an Indian. By faith, I am a Catholic nun. As to my calling, I belong to the world. As to my heart, I belong entirely to the Heart of Jesus."

While visiting Pope John Paul II in 1983, Mother Teresa experienced a heart attack in Rome. She was given a synthetic pacemaker in 1989 following a second attack. After battling pneumonia while in Mexico, she had new cardiac issues in 1991. She offered to step down as leader of the Missionaries of Charity. In contrast, she was approved to remain by the order's nuns in a secret vote. Mother Teresa agreed to carry on her duties as the order's leader.

She passed away on September 5, 1997.

Short Essay on Mother Teresa

Essay Mother Teresa was born Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu on August 26th, 1910, at Skopje. Her family belonged to the Albanian community. They were Catholics, though the majority of the Albanians are Muslims. Her father, Kole, was a widely traveled businessman. Her mother, Drana, was a housewife. They had three children of which Agnes was the youngest. When Agnes was nine, her father died. Drana had to look after the family. She started earning her living by sewing wedding dresses and doing embroidery jobs. In spite of these hardships, theirs was a religious family.

Every Time you smile at someone, it is an action of love, a gift to that person, a beautiful thing.

This spiritual upbringing had a deep impact on Agnes. As a little girl, she began to understand the quintessential meaning of the preachings of the Gospel and early in her life, she tried to put to practice what was preached. Her mother’s influence in molding little Agnes into a deeply caring human being cannot be undermined. Apart from taking care of her three children, Drana was much moved by the misery of an alcoholic woman in the neighborhood. She went to wash and feed her twice a day. She began to take care of a widow and her six children.

When Drana could not go, Agnes went to do this work. After the death of the widow, the children were raised in the Bojaxhiu household as a part of it. So it was this exemplary attitude of her mother that instilled in Agnes the love and concern for others. This was to become so much a part of her character that she left all other pleasures in her later life. She was to completely devote herself to the welfare of the poor and the needy.

It was at the age of twelve that for the first time, she felt a keen desire to spend her life doing God’s work. But she was not sure. Agnes was eighteen when the decision was made. For two years, she assisted several religious retreats in Lentice and it was clear to her that she would be a missionary in India. She then decided to join the Sisters of Our Lady of Loreto who were very active in India. On September 25th, 1928, she left for Dublin where the motherhouse of the Loreto Sisters is located. Here, Agnes learned to speak English and was trained for religious life. After receiving the Sister’s Habit, she chose to call herself Sister Teresa in memory of the little Teresa of Lisieux. On December 1st, 1928, Sister Teresa left for India to begin a new life.

After taking her vows at Darjeeling, Sister Teresa dedicated herself to the care of the sick and the needy in a small hospital. Later, she was trained as a teacher and became the headmistress of a secondary school in the center of Kolkata. Not only did Sister Teresa teach the students history and geography, but it also took time to get to know the children’s personalities and their families. So overwhelming was her concern for the children that they began calling her ‘Ma.’ Close to this institute, were the slums of Kolkata. The miserable appalling conditions in which the poor lived wrenched her heart. Sister Teresa could not turn herself away from such misery. Along with some girls, she would visit the slums and try to help out the poor in any manner that she could afford.

To clear her tormented soul and to look for direction, Sister Teresa went for a retreat to Darjeeling on the tenth of September, 1937. Many years later, Mother Teresa called it, “The most important journey of my life.” It was during that journey that she really heard God’s voice. His message was clear; she had to leave the convent to help the poorest of the poor and to live with them. “It was an order, a duty, an absolute certainty. I knew what to do but I did not know how.”

The tenth day of September is called “Inspiration Day.”

Mother Teresa was 38 when she took the vows of poverty, purity, and obedience. Giving up the Habit of the Sisters of Loreto, she took to wearing a cheap white cotton sari with a blue border. Sister Teresa then went to Patna to train herself as a nurse. She realized the importance of such training in her venture to help the poor who lived in dirty and unhealthy habitation. After completing her training, Sister Teresa came back to Kolkata and began her life’s vocation—to live among the poor and to help them.

Soon, she became a common figure in the slums and the streets of Kolkata. Her white sari, her fluent Bengali and her unrelenting effort to improve the hygiene and literacy in the slums, soon made her an endearing figure. Rising early at dawn, the Sister worked with dedication and inner spiritual strength that comes with sincere prayer. At Kolkata, owing to their growing numbers, the Missionaries of Charity needed a residence. A Muslim leaving for Pakistan sold his house for a nominal price and this was to become the famous Mother’s House at 54 A, Lower Circular Road, Kolkata. While society grew, the Mother’s work kept on increasing. Her work among the lepers of India got her international recognition. She received the Nobel Prize for Peace in 1979. After receiving the honor, Mother Teresa said, “I choose the poverty of our poor people. But I am grateful to receive (the Nobel) in the name of the hungry, the naked, the homeless, the crippled, the blind, the lepers, all those people who feel unwanted, unloved, uncared for throughout society, people who have become a burden to society and are shunned by everyone.”

Mother Teresa or the ‘Saint of the Gutters’ as we know her, was named Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu at birth. She was born in Skopje, Macedonia, on 27th August 1910. She was the daughter of humble Albanian parents – a grocer and his wife. As a public school student, she developed a special interest in overseas missions and by the age of 12, she felt strongly the call of God.

At the age of 18, she left her parental home in Skopje and joined the sisters of Loreto, an Irish community who runs nuns missions in India. After a few months’ training in Dublin she was sent to India, where on 24th May 1931, she took her initial vows as a nun. Here, she took the name ‘Sister Teresa’. However, in 1946, her life changed forever.

After falling ill with suspected tuberculosis, she was sent to the town of Darjeeling the ‘poorest of the poor’, she had said. The misery, suffering and poverty that she saw around haunted her day and night. Finally, she realised that her real calling was with the forsaken and with the downtrodden.

“The other day I dreamed that the gates of heaven… and St. Peter said, ‘Go back to Earth, there are not slums up here”.

In 1948, she received permission from her superiors to leave the convent school and devote herself to working among the poor in the slums of Calcutta. She adopted a white cotton sari with blue border, in place of her Loreto habit. She spent a few months in Holy Family Hospital, Patna to receive a basic medical training.

She initially opened a school in Motijhil in Kolkata, and thereafter tended to the needs of the destitute and the starving. In the beginning of 1949, she was joined by a group of young women and it paved the way for the creation of a community to help the ‘poorest of the poor’. Through the years Mother Teresa’s name grew, as did the magnitude of her deeds. On 7th October 1950, Mother Teresa received permission to start her own order.

‘The Missionaries of Charity’ whose primary task was to love and care for those persons whom nobody was prepared to look after. In 1952, she established a home for the homeless people — uncared for and unacceptable at other institutions were washed, fed and allowed to die with dignity.

Soon the mother opened a home for leprosy patients called ‘Shantinagar’ and a children’s home in 1955. When the walls of the Eastern Europe collapsed, she expanded her efforts to communist countries that had shunned her, embarking on dozens of projects.

Even today, the volunteers of the missionaries of charity provide effective help to the poorest of the poor in a number of countries in Asia, Africa and Latin America and they undertake relief works in the wake of natural catastrophes such as floods, epidemics, and famine and for refugees.

The order also has houses in North America, Europe and Australia, where they take care of the shut-ins, alcoholics, homeless and AIDS sufferers. By the 1990s, there were over one million co-workers in more than 40 countries.

In 1982, Mother Teresa persuaded Israelis and Palestinians, who were in the midst of a skirmish, to ceasefire long enough and rescue 37 mentally-handicapped patients from a besieged hospital in Beirut. In 1991, returning to her home country, she opened a home in Tirana, Albania.

She offered to resign her position as head of the order. A secret ballot was carried out and all the nuns, voted for the Mother to continue. Her own vote was the only vote against herself. Mother Teresa agreed to continue her work as head of the Missionaries of Charity.

On 13th March, 1997 she stepped down from the head of the Missionaries of Charity and died on 5th September 1997, just 9 days after her 87th birthday. At the time of her death, Mother Teresa’s Missionaries of Charity had over 4000 sisters, an associated brotherhood of 300 members and over 100000 strong volunteers, operating 610 missions in 123 countries.

These include hospital and homes that provide facilities like soup kitchens, children and family counselling programmes, orphanages and schools for people suffering from HIV/AIDS, leprosy and tuberculosis.

She is peace in the world”. Nawaz Sharif, the Prime Minister of Pakistan said that Teresa was “a rare and unique individual who lived long for higher purpose. Her life-long devotion to the care of the poor, the sick and the disadvantaged was one of the highest examples of service to humanity.” She was beatified by Pope John Paul II in October 2003, hence she may be appropriately called Blessed Teresa.

An essay on Mother Teresa – The real name of Mother Teresa was Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu and “Teresa” was the name she assumed, taking a cue from the name of Yugoslavia. It is generally believed that this world exists because of some great spirits. There is a saying that a nightingale visits a garden only once in blue moon.

Mother Teresa was born on 26 August 1910 in Skopje in Yugoslavia. His father was a builder but he died when she was quite a young girl. Her mother was a kindly, religiously-minded lady who left a great impression on young Agnes’ mind.

During those impressionable years of her life, Agnes developed the idea of serving the poor sections of mankind. The decisive movement for her came when she left for Ireland in 1928 at the age of 18. There she entered the Loreto congregation. At the time in Bengal, the sisters of Loreto were carrying out missionary work. A year later she came to India with a longing to join them.

Mother Teresa joined as a teacher in St. Mary’s School in Calcutta. She performed her duties with a spirit of great devotion and dedication. Later, she became the Principal of St. Agnes’ High School for Girls at Calcutta (now Kolkata) after years of teaching in the congregation’s schools and convents.

Apart from her teaching assignment, Mother Teresa spent her time observing the common people and greatly touched by the plightful condition of the slum-dwellers who lived not far away from school. Her missionary assignments also took her to Darjeeling. It was during one of the journeys that she was cut out for a different job. She was to be the servant of the poorest, the lowliest and the lost, the abandoned and the wretched, the orphans and lepers and untouchable sick dying people.

Mother Teresa took Indian Citizenship in 1948 she went about collecting human wrecks on the streets, housed them, and begged from door to door for food.

Mother Teresa founded the Missionaries of Charity in 1950 with just a few sisters. Later in 1956, she founded the famous “Nirmal Hriday”. It was a home for the destitute and was housed in a building provided free of cost by Calcutta corporation authorities. Help from the people was little. She did not give up. The enmity of the local people who wanted to drive her out changed when she housed a dying priest stricken by cholera whom no one would touch.

Later Nirmal Hriday homes for destitute children, leper colonies, and clinics for the poorest followed. Thereafter, in 1993 she founded the Brothers of Charity missionary organization. Her fame spread to dozens of countries and several of her homes were set up across the world, where the avowed aim was to serve the poorest, lowliest, and the lost. Today, they run hundreds of homes in Asia,  America, Europe, and Australia. She became famous in the world as Mother Teresa.

Mother Teresa won many awards and honors. She won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979 and the highest civilian award of India Bharat Ratna in 1980. She was given the Soviet Land Nehru Award for promoting friendship among the people and helping the poor and unfortunate in 1990. She had received the honor of ‘Angel of Peace.

Mother Teresa was canonized posthumously by the pope at a glittering ceremony in Rome in October 2003. The awards and appreciation had not changed her life or her sisters. She had dedicated her life to the service of mankind.

Mother Teresa always remained a friend of the poorest and was not interested in any recognition of her services. She even refused to partake in the Nobel Prize launch offered by the President of America and advised him to distribute the money meant for her launch among the poorest of the world.

In 1991, Mother Teresa suffered pneumonia leading to congestive heart failure. Her work is still going on after her death on 5 September 1997 (aged 87). She appointed her disciple Sister Nirmala in her place before her death. Her death stunned millions of people over the world.

Mother Teresa will always be remembered as one of the greatest women in the world. She will be remembered by mankind not just for decades and centuries but for millenniums. She was great humanity and environmentalist and her speech at Stockholm delivered to safeguard the world environment will never be forgotten by lovers of mankind.
