How to Give an Interview Presentation That'll Convince the Entire Room You're the One

As your career advances , you’ll find that closing that final interview with a bang and subsequently getting an offer takes more than strong answers, recognition of a good fit, and great chemistry with the hiring team.

In fact, for many higher-level jobs, you can probably expect to present some of your intellectual property. This is an opportunity for your future leadership team to see what they’ll really be getting if they hire you.

One smart way to differentiate yourself as a candidate is by developing a solid 90-day plan if you’re asked to present something in your final interview. This is an opportunity for you to articulate how you’ll show up to solve the problems the employer is hiring you to manage.

A 90-day plan shows the employer three key things: your understanding of the mission for which you’re being hired, evidence that you have the goods to make your manager look like a rock star for hiring you, and your ability to plan and execute quickly to make an impact for best results.

As you move up and your title changes, your time to deliver results is intensely scrutinized, and at a more accelerated rate. The truth is, you’ll have approximately 90 days to prove you’re an asset to the company. With that said, here’s what employers are looking for:

1. Clear Priorities

After an in-depth interview or two, you should have a very clear idea of the specific things you’ll be expected to deliver and how hot each issue is. You want to learn the pain points that are keeping the employer up at night.

Based on the interviews you’ve had, the research you’ve done, and the questions you’ve asked, you should be able to smoothly articulate the most important issues and priorities that you’ll address in the first 90 days.

2. SMART Actions

As you build your presentation out, you’ll want to include specific tasks you plan to accomplish and in what timeframe along with what people or resources you expect to need in order to make those things happen. Use the SMART acronym: Set goals that are specific, measureable, attainable, realistic, and time-bound. No time like the 90-day plan for that. And all of your actions should tie back to the priorities you’ve identified in the first step.

3. Well-Defined Success Measures

One benefit of creating this timeline is that it gives you the opportunity to set the definition of success as early as possible. You and your manager must align on that, or there’ll be tension. After all, you don’t want a to build a plan that delivers success in the form of improving time to market the latest app, when your future boss thinks success is doubling the revenue in six months. Make sure you have a very clear understanding of the company's wants and needs and have your goals reflect that knowledge.

4. Quantifiable Impact Measures

List specifically how you want to measure the success of your actions. And make sure you’re aligned with your boss and the organization on what that looks like.

You can also include a test for the “so what” factor in your presentation. The real measure of your work is the impact it has on the organization. As a result of the actions you’re outlining, do you anticipate sales increasing by X%? Expenses being reduced by Y%? Resolving a hiccup in the manufacturing process that saves $X per quarter?

An action without impact is a task. As you identify your specific action strategies, and how you’ll measure success, make sure you also tie it to the impact that action will have on the organization. Ask yourself, “How will the organization be better when I deliver on these outcomes?” and then show that!

5. Scorecard

An essential part of any 90-day plan is building a report out. As you put your thoughts to paper, be sure to include the summary of actions, progress, and updates your manager will see each week. Design your report out in an easy to follow summary you can update each week. Think of it as a mini billboard of your accomplishments.

When you do, you’ll be building a visual story of your pathway to success, enabling your future manager to easily share your success with higher ups, and report on what an awesome hire she’s made. And what boss doesn’t want to get high fived for that?

You don’t have to be in a VP or C-level interview to use this great technique for differentiating yourself from the competition. I encourage clients in even the early stages of their careers to think about how they would approach a new position, what their plan would be. If you can find an opportunity to show the hiring manager how you organize your thoughts, and how you’d develop a strategy for approaching the new position, you’ll give yourself an edge over the other candidates.

Whatever level job you’re applying for, it’s smart to think about how you’d make an impact in the first 90 days. Be aggressive but realistic about how you’d get quick wins, and address pain points you’re aware the employer needs your help with. This approach goes above and beyond the standard interview Q&A.

Today's jobs report: US economy added booming 272,000 jobs in May, unemployment at 4%

Hiring accelerated in May as employers added a robust 272,000 jobs despite stubborn inflation , high interest rates and intensifying household financial strains

The unemployment rate, which is calculated from a separate survey, rose from 3.9% to 4%, the highest since January 2022, the Labor Department said Friday.

Economists had estimated that 185,000 jobs were added last month, according to a Bloomberg survey.

Has wage growth slowed?

Average hourly pay rose 14 cents to $34.91, pushing up the yearly increase to 4.1%.   

Wage growth generally has downshifted as pandemic-related labor shortages have eased, but it’s still above the 3.5% clip that’s consistent with the Federal Reserve’s s 2% inflation goal.

Many Americans, meanwhile, are benefiting because typical pay increases have outpaced inflation the past year, giving them more purchasing power.

Is the Fed going to cut interest rates in 2024?

The report will likely not be well received by a Federal Reserve looking for a slowdown in wage growth, which feeds into inflation.

"These data are in no way supportive of an imminent move by the Fed to lower rates," economist Rubeela Farooqi of High Frequency Economics wrote in a note to clients.

In recent weeks, Fed officials have repeatedly said it will take longer than expected to gain confidence that inflation is sustainably approaching their 2% goal, delaying market-friendly interest rate cuts.

After easing significantly last year, inflation stayed high in the first quarter but showed signs of stabilizing in April.

Fed Chair Jerome Powell also has said a notably weakening labor market could prod the Fed to act even if inflation doesn’t slow as rapidly as officials hope. Friday’s strong job gains do little to meet that threshold, though the rising unemployment rate could raise some concerns.

Since March 2022, the Fed has raised its key short-term interest rate from near zero to a 23-year-high of 5.25% to 5.5%, but it has held it steady since last July as inflation has eased. Officials had forecast three rate cuts this year, propelling the stock market to new records. But futures markets are now predicting one or two cuts, with the first coming in September, and some economists think the central bank put could put off rate decreases until next year if inflation stays elevated.

Which industries are hiring the most right now?

Last month, health care and social assistance again led the job gains with 83,000. Leisure and hospitality, which includes restaurants and bars, added 42,000; and professional and business services, 33,000.

The public sector, which accounted for much of the payroll increases in recent months but added just 7,000 positions in April, rebounded with 43,000 gains.

“The sectors that have led over the past year continue to dominate – health care, government, leisure and hospitality," says Jane Oates, senior policy adviser for WorkingNation, a nonprofit that raises awareness about the challenges facing U.S. workers, and former head of the Labor Department’s employment and training division.

What affects job growth?

Several crosscurrents were poised to affect May’s payroll totals. Heavy rains crimped hiring in April and a return to more typical weather patterns last month likely provided a modest boost, says economist Ryan Sweet of Oxford Economics.

Another positive: May had an unusually large number of workdays because of a calendar quirk, lifting employment totals by 50,000 to 80,000, Goldman Sachs wrote in a note to clients.

Yet there were also hurdles. Although May is in the thick of the spring hiring season, many employers are still struggling to find workers post-pandemic, a constraint that may have curtailed job gains after the figures were seasonally adjusted, Goldman says.

Is the labor force increasing?

Immigration, the research firm adds, has significantly expanded the labor pool and should continue to add about 50,000 potential workers a month in 2024 but it has slowed substantially since early this year.

Is 2% inflation realistic?: Should the Fed relax its 2% inflation goal and cut interest rates? Yes, some experts say.

An influx of high school and college students for the summer also should bolster the supply of workers but it’s not clear when that will occur because the timing of the end of the school year varies, Sweet says.

Is the job market good or bad right now?

More broadly, the job market has remained surprisingly resilient despite high inflation and interest rates, but it’s gradually cooling. After adding well over 200,000 jobs a month in the first three months of the year, job gains slowed in April.

A separate Labor Department report this week showed that job openings fell to 8.1 million in April, the lowest tally since early 2021 and well below the record 12 million in early 2022. The number of job vacancies per unemployed worker has slipped to 1.2 from a high of 2 during the Great Resignation, in line with the pre-pandemic level.

And hiring stayed below the pre-pandemic pace. Employment growth has remained strong because businesses have been hesitant to lay off workers following severe pandemic-related labor shortages. But that effect is expected to fade in the second half of the year, with average monthly job gains falling to about 100,000.

The U.S. economy keeps throwing curveballs, and the May employment report is the latest example.

Employers added 272,000 jobs last month, the Labor Department reported on Friday, well above what economists had expected as hiring had gradually slowed. That’s an increase from the 232,000-job average over the previous 12 months, scrambling the picture of an economy that’s relaxing into a more sustainable pace.

Most concerning for the Federal Reserve, which meets next week and again in July, wages rose 4.1 percent from a year ago — a sign that inflation might not yet be vanquished.

“For those who may have thought they would see a July rate cut, that door has largely been shut,” said Beth Ann Bovino, chief U.S. economist for U.S. Bank. Although wage gains are good for workers, she noted, persistent price increases undermine their spending power.

Stocks fell shortly after the report was published, then recovered most of their losses by the end of the day. Government bond yields, which track expectations for Fed rate moves, rose sharply and remained elevated through the trading day.

But the portrait of an accelerating labor market isn’t perfectly clear, either. In another part of the report, the unemployment rate ticked up to 4 percent, its highest point since January 2022. That number is drawn from a survey of households, which showed essentially no employment growth for the past year and rising part-time employment that had displaced full-time positions.

The much anticipated May jobs report left markets with more questions than answers. Based on a firm survey and considered the gold standard, the nonfarm payrolls jobs report was broad-based and more robust than expected, with a gain of 272,000 jobs for the month. Based on a polling of households and a smaller sampling than the payrolls establishment survey, the household survey posted a significant decline in employment. This month’s data has widened the substantial gap between the payrolls report and the household measures of job growth that began in late 2023. So, are things getting better or worse in the labor market?

Through the help of some other data points, the truth is probably somewhere in the middle. The rise in immigrant employment is almost certainly undercounted in the household survey. However, as this article will illustrate, other data provide evidence that the labor market is cooling.

While wage growth was hotter than expected at 4.1% year-over-year and will feed fears of inflation pressures, the hours worked held steady and remained only slightly above the 4-year low.

Based on the decline in employment in the household survey, the unemployment rate ticked up to 4.0% from 3.9%. While this is still very low by historical standards, unemployment has crept up from the 3.4% low in January 2023.

Importantly, even if one wholly believes the weakness in the household survey, the increase in the unemployment rate is not yet signaling an imminent recession. The “Sahm Rule,” which has an unblemished track record for predicting recession when the unemployment rate rises sufficiently over the low, has not yet been triggered.

The recent April JOLTS report strengthens the case for a cooling job market, as job openings remain historically high but have been in a downward trend since March 2022. A subcomponent of the JOLTS data called the Quits rate, which measures voluntary separations from employment, is at the high end of its typical historical range but has declined since April 2022. The Quits rate has been significantly correlated with wage growth over time, so this month’s higher-than-expected wage growth seems likely to ease in the month ahead.

The highest frequency jobs data, initial jobless claims, which measure initial filings for unemployment benefits, has been increasing since January. Again, these claims for unemployment compensation are below long-term “normal” historical levels but moving higher.

The bottom line is that the payrolls report indicates that the labor market is not collapsing, and thus, U.S. economic growth should also hold up. Following the jobs report, the Atlanta Fed’s second-quarter GDP estimate was boosted to 3.1%.

In reaction to the less friendly wage data and firmer economic growth expectations, the 2-year and 10-year bond yields have risen to 4.43% and 4.89%, respectively.

Relatedly, markets have now priced in a 54% chance of a Federal Reserve (Fed) easing in September, down from over 80% just a few days ago. Fed Fund futures are still looking for one-and-a-half cuts of 25 basis points (0.25%) in 2024.

Probability Of Fed Rate Cut

In the wake of the jobs report, Wednesday’s consumer inflation (CPI) report and Federal Reserve meeting take on more significance. The Cleveland Fed and consensus estimates expect the CPI to be around 3.4% year-over-year, which would be unchanged from the pace of the previous month. While the Federal Reserve is sure to leave short-term interest rates unchanged, Chair Powell’s comments and the updated projections from the committee will be crucial in interpreting how they view the divergence in the labor market data.

Stocks were surprisingly resilient despite the less helpful wage inflation news, with the S&P 500 down slightly on payroll’s Friday, but stocks held onto a 1.3% gain for the week. While the payroll jobs growth was more substantial than expected, including wage growth, enough hints of softening remain to keep the odds of at least one rate cut from the Fed as a high probability. Notably, the window is still open for the economy to be strong enough to support corporate earnings but easing sufficiently to eventually allow the Fed to make monetary policy less restrictive. At the Fed meeting next week, it will be crucial to hear if Chair Powell agrees with this assessment or if further adjustments need to be made to meet market expectations.

McKinsey Technology Trends Outlook 2023

After a tumultuous 2022 for technology investment and talent, the first half of 2023 has seen a resurgence of enthusiasm about technology’s potential to catalyze progress in business and society. Generative AI deserves much of the credit for ushering in this revival, but it stands as just one of many advances on the horizon that could drive sustainable, inclusive growth and solve complex global challenges.

To help executives track the latest developments, the McKinsey Technology Council  has once again identified and interpreted the most significant technology trends unfolding today. While many trends are in the early stages of adoption and scale, executives can use this research to plan ahead by developing an understanding of potential use cases and pinpointing the critical skills needed as they hire or upskill talent to bring these opportunities to fruition.

Our analysis examines quantitative measures of interest, innovation, and investment to gauge the momentum of each trend. Recognizing the long-term nature and interdependence of these trends, we also delve into underlying technologies, uncertainties, and questions surrounding each trend. This year, we added an important new dimension for analysis—talent. We provide data on talent supply-and-demand dynamics for the roles of most relevance to each trend. (For more, please see the sidebar, “Research methodology.”)

New and notable

All of last year’s 14 trends remain on our list, though some experienced accelerating momentum and investment, while others saw a downshift. One new trend, generative AI, made a loud entrance and has already shown potential for transformative business impact.

Research methodology

To assess the development of each technology trend, our team collected data on five tangible measures of activity: search engine queries, news publications, patents, research publications, and investment. For each measure, we used a defined set of data sources to find occurrences of keywords associated with each of the 15 trends, screened those occurrences for valid mentions of activity, and indexed the resulting numbers of mentions on a 0–1 scoring scale that is relative to the trends studied. The innovation score combines the patents and research scores; the interest score combines the news and search scores. (While we recognize that an interest score can be inflated by deliberate efforts to stimulate news and search activity, we believe that each score fairly reflects the extent of discussion and debate about a given trend.) Investment measures the flows of funding from the capital markets into companies linked with the trend. Data sources for the scores include the following:

  • Patents. Data on patent filings are sourced from Google Patents.
  • Research. Data on research publications are sourced from the Lens (www.lens.org).
  • News. Data on news publications are sourced from Factiva.
  • Searches. Data on search engine queries are sourced from Google Trends.
  • Investment. Data on private-market and public-market capital raises are sourced from PitchBook.
  • Talent demand. Number of job postings is sourced from McKinsey’s proprietary Organizational Data Platform, which stores licensed, de-identified data on professional profiles and job postings. Data is drawn primarily from English-speaking countries.

In addition, we updated the selection and definition of trends from last year’s study to reflect the evolution of technology trends:

  • The generative-AI trend was added since last year’s study.
  • We adjusted the definitions of electrification and renewables (previously called future of clean energy) and climate technologies beyond electrification and renewables (previously called future of sustainable consumption).
  • Data sources were updated. This year, we included only closed deals in PitchBook data, which revised downward the investment numbers for 2018–22. For future of space technologies investments, we used research from McKinsey’s Aerospace & Defense Practice.

This new entrant represents the next frontier of AI. Building upon existing technologies such as applied AI and industrializing machine learning, generative AI has high potential and applicability across most industries. Interest in the topic (as gauged by news and internet searches) increased threefold from 2021 to 2022. As we recently wrote, generative AI and other foundational models  change the AI game by taking assistive technology to a new level, reducing application development time, and bringing powerful capabilities to nontechnical users. Generative AI is poised to add as much as $4.4 trillion in economic value from a combination of specific use cases and more diffuse uses—such as assisting with email drafts—that increase productivity. Still, while generative AI can unlock significant value, firms should not underestimate the economic significance and the growth potential that underlying AI technologies and industrializing machine learning can bring to various industries.

Investment in most tech trends tightened year over year, but the potential for future growth remains high, as further indicated by the recent rebound in tech valuations. Indeed, absolute investments remained strong in 2022, at more than $1 trillion combined, indicating great faith in the value potential of these trends. Trust architectures and digital identity grew the most out of last year’s 14 trends, increasing by nearly 50 percent as security, privacy, and resilience become increasingly critical across industries. Investment in other trends—such as applied AI, advanced connectivity, and cloud and edge computing—declined, but that is likely due, at least in part, to their maturity. More mature technologies can be more sensitive to short-term budget dynamics than more nascent technologies with longer investment time horizons, such as climate and mobility technologies. Also, as some technologies become more profitable, they can often scale further with lower marginal investment. Given that these technologies have applications in most industries, we have little doubt that mainstream adoption will continue to grow.

Organizations shouldn’t focus too heavily on the trends that are garnering the most attention. By focusing on only the most hyped trends, they may miss out on the significant value potential of other technologies and hinder the chance for purposeful capability building. Instead, companies seeking longer-term growth should focus on a portfolio-oriented investment across the tech trends most important to their business. Technologies such as cloud and edge computing and the future of bioengineering have shown steady increases in innovation and continue to have expanded use cases across industries. In fact, more than 400 edge use cases across various industries have been identified, and edge computing is projected to win double-digit growth globally over the next five years. Additionally, nascent technologies, such as quantum, continue to evolve and show significant potential for value creation. Our updated analysis for 2023 shows that the four industries likely to see the earliest economic impact from quantum computing—automotive, chemicals, financial services, and life sciences—stand to potentially gain up to $1.3 trillion in value by 2035. By carefully assessing the evolving landscape and considering a balanced approach, businesses can capitalize on both established and emerging technologies to propel innovation and achieve sustainable growth.

Tech talent dynamics

We can’t overstate the importance of talent as a key source in developing a competitive edge. A lack of talent is a top issue constraining growth. There’s a wide gap between the demand for people with the skills needed to capture value from the tech trends and available talent: our survey of 3.5 million job postings in these tech trends found that many of the skills in greatest demand have less than half as many qualified practitioners per posting as the global average. Companies should be on top of the talent market, ready to respond to notable shifts and to deliver a strong value proposition to the technologists they hope to hire and retain. For instance, recent layoffs in the tech sector may present a silver lining for other industries that have struggled to win the attention of attractive candidates and retain senior tech talent. In addition, some of these technologies will accelerate the pace of workforce transformation. In the coming decade, 20 to 30 percent of the time that workers spend on the job could be transformed by automation technologies, leading to significant shifts in the skills required to be successful. And companies should continue to look at how they can adjust roles or upskill individuals to meet their tailored job requirements. Job postings in fields related to tech trends grew at a very healthy 15 percent between 2021 and 2022, even though global job postings overall decreased by 13 percent. Applied AI and next-generation software development together posted nearly one million jobs between 2018 and 2022. This bright outlook for practitioners in most fields highlights the challenge facing employers who are struggling to find enough talent to keep up with their demands. The shortage of qualified talent has been a persistent limiting factor in the growth of many high-tech fields, including AI, quantum technologies, space technologies, and electrification and renewables. The talent crunch is particularly pronounced for trends such as cloud computing and industrializing machine learning, which are required across most industries. It’s also a major challenge in areas that employ highly specialized professionals, such as the future of mobility and quantum computing (see interactive).
