What is a Syllable

Terani. No, cuz you´re specifying what you´ve played. Play means sex when it´s used without an object.

I don’t know if it’s allowed for me to answer your question but I’ll take a chance and try to help Ms. Ronnie. You don’t have to replace every “play” with “hang out”, it’s not like you omitting this word out of dictionaries. For example, you can still say “I played some music” or “I played chess the other day” or “I played with my son yesterday” or “they played with the exam results”, and none of those “play” has a sexual context.

It is about “to hang out” and not “hung out”.I like to hang out with my friends on internet. I like to spend time wherever /whenever without a prealable schedule .Teenagers often enjoy to hang out around icecream shop(spend time together) after last course,before to go home.

I think it could be better for the students who are learning English if the videos have synchronous options .That will provide a more visual way to understand the contents by catching the characters when hearing a word that has no idea about its meaning.

I have a question. At the lesson “Conversation Skills – Speak with confidence” you said, “If a person wants to talk to you, they will talk to you.” (“a person” changes to “they”). How to say a sentence like this one. “If a student takes exams, he (she) will get grant.” What word can I use instead of “she” or “he”, if I mean one person and I want to talk about general. Is it a rule when “one person” can change to “they” if I talk about a person in general (a man or woman)?

All I know is this: If we have a sentence which has, for example, two parts, and we use a singular subject in the first part of the sentence, we should use a singular subject in the second part of the sentence too. For instance:

One Nike in the grave is a play on the idiom “one foot in the grave”. It means you are going to die soon. Nike = shoe brand. One Nike in the rave = Rave is a electronic dance party popular in the late 90’s. So that means one foot was at the party.

Currently in India “Rave Party” is considered to be a negative thing and often refers to the parities those involved dance,drugs and sex. Is this definition correct in modern days? and if not what word will you used to refer such parties.

Why does the word “out” have 1 syllable ? It has two vowel sounds.

The “ou” in “out” is what’s called a diphthong — a vowel sound that is a combination of two. Other diphthongs are the “i” in “right” (raaa-ight) and the “ow” in “tow” (toh-ooooo). They contain two vowel sounds, but are spoken in one syllable.

Out only has 1 vowel sound. The “ou” sounds like one. In English, we call these diphthongs. A diphthong is 2 vowels that when together, make one vowel sound!

1)You can use never + base, if you talk about your daily routine. EX.. I never eat seafood. If you want to talk about your past experience, you have to use present perfect. EX I have never eaten seafood. (sub + have/has + never + past participle). OR I haven’t eaten seafood. ( Sub+ have not + past participle).

2) What is she eating….is correct. She =is a pronoun, it replaces a person’s name. Her =is possessive. It tells us who has the noun!

3) Before is unnecessary unless you want to emphasize (make stronger) your sentence. However, you must say I HAVE never had a boyfriend!

Hi there,Ronnie! A doubt came to my mind…”Noisy” or “Polite” are 2-syllables words, however, they can have both comparative/superlative structures. What’s the reason? I mean, is there any rule for those 2-syllables words which also work in the “short” form? Really appreciate your time.

Noisy, because it ends in a Y, must be nosiest. A lot of 2 syllable words can use either -est or most. However, to make it easy, I just gave 1 example…..to keep it simple!

The “u” in “university” is pronounced “you” /juː/, not “oo” as in “moon” /uː/. It’s still a vowel, but doesn’t need a consonant before it.

Lesson 11 – Syllables and word stress

We are moving beyond the phonetic sounds of English now. We’re going to focus on some other important parts of pronunciation:

A good way to practice these aspects of pronunciation is to do a practice called shadowing or parroting. The term “parroting” gets its name from how parrots copy human voices.

When you are practicing you should choose something a video to listen to and repeat everything they say about or or two seconds later.

Here is another video. The parrot doesn’t say much but the woman has an expressive voice. Try parroting her. I recommend that in the YouTube setting you change the playback speed to 0.5.

Write the IPA for the following sentences.

Find the answer at the bottom of the lesson.

Words are divided into syllables. The vowel is the main unit of a syllable. If you count the separate vowel units then you know how many syllables there are.

One-syllable words

Two-syllable words, how many syllables are in these words.

Word Stress

In words with more than one syllable, some syllables are stressed and some are unstressed .

Stressed syllable

You put a stress mark in front of the stressed syllable. In both of the examples below, the second syllable is stressed.

  • a’bandon
  • un’tie

Stressed word

You can even have stressed words in a phrase.

  • ‘ball game
  • put ‘on

Primary stress and secondary stress

In longer words you often have a strong stress and a weak stress. The strong stress is called the primary stress and it uses a high mark ( ‘ ) before the strongly stressed syllable. The weak stress is called the secondary stress and it uses a low mark ( ˌ ) before the weakly stressed syllable.

  • ˌmultipli’cation

Multi-word stress rules

Compound nouns.

If you have two nouns in a single word, then the first noun is stressed.

This is true even when the two words are separated:

  • train station
  • birthday party
  • apartment building

Phrasal verbs

If you have a verb plus an adverb, then the adverb is stressed:

Verb + Adverb

However, this may change if the verb takes an object.

Put ‘on your ‘coat. ‘Put your ‘coat on. ‘Put it ‘on.
Look ‘up the ‘word. ‘Look the ‘word up. ‘Look it ‘up.
Wash ‘out the ‘bowl. ‘Wash the ‘bowl out. ‘Wash it ‘out.

If you have a phrasal verb with a preposition, then the verb is stressed, not the preposition.

Verb + Preposition

  • look at  –  ‘look at the ‘bird
  • listen to  –  ‘listen to ‘music

Other compound words

Generally if you have an adjective plus a noun, both words are stressed:

However, if the two words become a single meaning, then the first word is stressed. Compare the following examples:

a ˈwhite ˈhouse The ˈWhite House
a ˈblack ˈboard a ˈblackboard
a ˈgreen ˈhouse a ˈgreenhouse
a ˈdark ˈroom a ˈdarkroom
a ˈbig ˈbird ˈBig Bird

How Many Syllables? - Worksheet teaching resource

This worksheet is best used as independent practice as part of your syllables lesson. 

Students will name the picture and then break that word into syllables. They count the number of syllables and color the appropriate number on the worksheet.
