Sisters Nneka and Chiney Ogwumike started off as gymnasts. Here's how they 'fell into basketball'

The WNBA stars and teammates reflect on their career journeys in an interview with TODAY.com.

Nneka and Chiney Ogwumike first picked up a basketball by happenstance.

Their first sport was actually gymnastics, they tell TODAY.com in a joint interview, and their mom, Ify Ogwumike, had a colleague who questioned that choice.

"It started as gymnastics and then her colleague was like, 'Why gymnastics? Your girls are tall. Try basketball,'" Chiney Ogwumike, 31, who's listed at 6 feet, 3 inches tall , says. "That's how we fell into basketball. It was literally a colleague that cared, that came to our gymnastics practice and was like, 'Put them in basketball.'"

Chiney Ogwumike, the younger of the two, started playing basketball around age 9, and Nneka Ogwumike later followed suit. They went on to play for Stanford on full-ride scholarships and currently play for the WNBA's Los Angeles Sparks.

Nneka Ogwumike, 33, an eight-time All-Star, is serving her third term as president of the players' union. Chiney Ogwumike was recently sworn in to serve on President Biden's advisory council on African Diaspora Engagement in the United States.

"When we started playing basketball, we didn't quite know what it would offer," Nneka Ogwumike says. "It was a whole world that we were just completely unfamiliar with."

The power duo tell TODAY.com more about their journeys below.

Chiney and Nneka Ogwumike

'Oh, you can pay for school?'

The sisters' parents moved from Nigeria to the United States and ended up attending Weber State University in Utah. Their dad, Peter Ogwumike, accepted a job in Houston at what is now HP, they say. Their mom has been in education for 30 years and is now an assistant school district superintendent.

The sisters say they long felt connected to their Nigerian heritage even though they were born and raised in the Houston area. Harris County, Texas, which includes Houston, has the largest Nigerian population of any county in the country, according to 2020 Census data.

"Houston has become, I guess you could say, this little Lagos," Chiney Ogwumike says. "So even though they're far from home, we were able to find community."

The Ogwumike parents have four girls, all of whom went on to play Division I basketball: Nneka Ogwumike and Chiney Ogwumike at Stanford, and Erica Ogwumike and Olivia Ogwumike at Rice University.

"There's a through line in all of us, but we all kind of ended up doing our own thing, and I love it," Nneka Ogwumike said of her siblings. "Supporting that is really important because our parents raised us to be collaborative and be teammates instead of competitive. So we've never been a, 'Oh, Chiney did that? Oh, I'm going to do this!' We've always just been like, 'Girl, can I come along!' We just love celebrating each other and I think it's also what contributes to how we achieve what we achieve."

Playing at the collegiate level was not the original plan for Nneka Ogwumike and Chiney Ogwumike, they say, noting that they first viewed basketball as an extracurricular activity to help them become well rounded as high-achieving academic students.

"And eventually, once we started getting better, now all of a sudden we're getting letters in the mail," Nneka Ogwumike says. "And we're like, 'Oh, what does that mean?' And they're like, 'Oh, you can pay for school with that.' And that's when it really translated."

We've never been a, 'Oh, Chiney did that? Oh, I'm going to do this!' We've always just been like, 'Girl, can I come along!' We just love celebrating each other and I think it's also what contributes to how we achieve what we achieve."

Nneka ogwumike

Chiney Ogwumike chimes in, "'Oh, you can pay for school?' We're going to the best."

They both ended up attending Stanford, independent of each other's decision, the sisters say. Nneka Ogwumike started at the California school in 2008 and her sister joined two years later.

"We come from the same family, were raised the same way, but we still had different journeys that ended up landing us in the same place," Nneka Ogwumike says.

While at the athletic and academic powerhouse, Nneka Ogwumike played in 145 games, scored 2,491 career points and graduated with a degree in psychology. Chiney Ogwumike played in the same number of games, put up 2,737 career points and earned her degree in international relations.

When figuring out their postgraduation plans, Chiney Ogwumike says there were cultural considerations that impacted their decision.

"We (are) Nigerian," she says. "You could put a ball in a basket, but are you going to be a doctor, lawyer, engineer?"

'I think you should think about this WNBA'

Nneka Ogwumike and Chiney Ogwumike play against each other in 2016

Nneka Ogwumike was pre-med in college and well on her way to becoming a doctor.

"Let me tell you: Nneka was not even trying to get drafted," Chiney Ogwumike says, laughing throughout the story.

"It was halfway through her senior year and I'm like the little sister that's on the message boards reading everything," she recalls. "Nneka's like, 'Uh, I think I want to be a doctor.' I was like, 'Nneka, hold on. They're saying you're going to go No. 1.' We literally had to convince you: I think you should think about this WNBA."

"It was funny," Nneka Ogwumike says.

The Los Angeles Sparks selected Nneka Ogwumike as the No. 1 pick in the 2012 WNBA draft. Chiney Ogwumike was the No. 1 pick of the 2014 draft, selected by the Connecticut Sun. She joined the Sparks in 2019.

Chiney Ogwumike says as she convinced her sister to declare for the draft, their parents came around to basketball as a career.

“I think in the middle of all that, our parents love that we play,” Chiney Ogwumike says. “We love that we play, but I think at the end of the day we’re two young girls that are nerds, that love our culture, and basketball just happens to be what we do. It’s not who we are."

And they do it well.

Nneka Ogwumike was named the WNBA's Rookie of the Year in 2012 and Most Valuable Player in 2016. She helped the Sparks win the league title in 2016 and has numerous other accolades. She also led negotiations for a new collective bargaining agreement in 2020, winning pay raises, fully paid maternity leaves, better travel accommodations and more for players. She regularly speaks on various panels about pay equity and growing the league.

Chiney Ogwumike is a two-time WNBA All-Star who was named Rookie of the Year in 2014 and The Associated Press' Comeback Player of the Year for 2016. She also works for ESPN as a basketball analyst and host. She currently serves on Biden's African Diaspora Engagement advisory council "to reinforce cultural, social, political, and economic ties between the U.S. and Africa, and promote trade, investment, and educational exchanges between the United States and Africa," the White House's website says.

Growing the WNBA

Chiney Ogwumike and Nneka Ogwumike

The WNBA is currently in its offseason, when players commonly go overseas and play on teams there.

But the ongoing Russia-Ukraine and Israel-Hamas wars, plus tension between China and the United States, have complicated plans that had previously been upended by the COVID-19 pandemic, Nneka Ogwumike says.

Brittney Griner's detainment in Russia in 2022 and former WNBA draft pick Mikalya Cowling reportedly being attacked last month while in Poland , where she was playing, has only added to safety concerns.

At the same time, Nneka Ogwumike says many players rely on compensation they receive from playing overseas to financially sustain themselves. Nneka Ogwumike and Chiney Ogwumike have both previously played overseas.

"With the pandemic and wars going on, it's really making it difficult for players to decide between life and dream," Nneka Ogwumike says. "It's sad that the choice is so dangerous. It's not that it wasn't before. I guess it's that with the rise of women's sports, with the investment in women's sports, you just want to see something to where that doesn't feel like it's a necessity and I think right now, it still feels like a bit of a necessity for players."

The president of the players' union says with the fluctuation of available teams and markets overseas, she hopes the WNBA doubles down on making more opportunities available in the United States.

"It's difficult to see a long-term future in (overseas) for players that really want to play in the W," she says. "I do anticipate there being more of an option to just play at home and stay at home and make salary and compensation that is somewhat equitable to what we see over there."

The WNBA announced on Oct. 5 it is adding a new team in San Francisco, the first new franchise to join the league since 2008. The team will start playing in 2025.

The expansion brings the WNBA up to 13 teams total. The odd number is uncommon in professional sports, as it impacts the number of matchups. The NBA, MLB, NFL and NHL each have an even number of teams at 30 (NBA and MLB) and 32 (NFL and NHL), respectively.

Chiney Ogwumike predicts that the odd number of teams in the WNBA won't last.

"Fourteen has to happen," she says. "It has to. ... I heard things about Toronto, Nashville, Philly. I personally see a lot of good in potentially Toronto just because it seems like they have very similar connections to what made San Francisco go. To me, if I had to pick, Toronto's looking like they're really pursuing this opportunity, but people thought it was Portland not too long ago."

In the meantime, the sisters currently have their own personal goals.

Nneka Ogwumike is experimenting with baking without a recipe. And Chiney Ogwumike is engaged and planning her wedding.

Is the older sister baking the cake for her little sister's wedding? Stay tuned.

Oguike Sisters: Who Are Chisom, Chidinma, and Chinenye Oguike?

chika Udeh

The Oguike sisters comprise Chisom Oguike (Born on January 21, 2008; Age: 16 years old), Chidinma Stephany Oguike (Born on August 17, 2009; Age: 16 years old), and Chinenye Oguike (Born on November 11, 2010; Age: 13 years old). The trio are popular Nigerian child actresses best known for their roles in the TV series My Kids and I .

Nollywood has had many child actors over the years. While some have gone ahead to become big stars, others have quit acting and retired to a life of relative anonymity. The Oguike sisters are the latest among the new faces that are dominating the Nollywood screens in recent years.

They are not just one of the hottest kid actresses making waves in the Nigerian film industry but are also smart with top-notch acting skills, the kind you can find in only a few child stars of their time. To know more about the Oguike children, here are interesting facts we have to share with you.

Chisom is the Eldest of the Oguike Sisters

Chisom Oguike is currently 16 years old. She was born on January 21, 2008, and she currently stands as not just the eldest of the three sisters, but also the first child of her parents. Her siblings include Chidinma, Chinenye, and Zion Oguike.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Chisom Oguike Hilary🧚🏼‍♀️ (@itschisom_oh)

Chisom is a Nigerian, born in Lagos state but she hails from Anambra state , Southeast Nigeria. Her childhood details, as well as her educational career path, has not been revealed but from what we’ve gathered, she is still undergoing her secondary school education and with her parents’ support, she is successfully combining her education with her acting career.

Chidinma Oguike is Often Mistaken as the Oldest of the Three Sisters

Chidinma is by far the biggest of the three sisters. You would mistake her as the oldest of them all but she is younger than her sister Chisom by approximately one year. She was born on August 17, 2009, which means that she is currently 14 years old. Like her sister, Chidinma is Igbo and she was born and raised in Lagos state, Nigeria.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by OGUIKE CHIDINMA STEPHANIE (@officialchidinmao)

She also has two younger siblings – Chinenye and Zion. Not much is known about her education but we believe that the 14 years old actress attends the same secondary school as her older sister.

Chinenye Oguike is the Youngest of the Three Sisters

The last of the Oguike girls is beautiful Chinenye Oguike who is just 54 years old as she was born on November 11, 2010, in Anambra State, Nigeria. Chinenye may be one of the few well-known child actresses in the industry but her creativity and acting talent have helped in her rise to fame.

biography of oguike family

As the last-born female in the Oguike family, the young talent is only older than her brother Zion by a few years. Chinenye might just have completed her primary school education as of the time of writing this piece. It is, however not known if she has begun her secondary school education. Like her sisters, Chineye combines her acting career with her education.

What We Know About the Parents of the Oguike Sisters

The Oguike girls may have attained so much fame thanks to their great acting skills alongside their beauty, but their parents are far from being famous. Though they are quite rich, their father   Nester Oguike Hilary who hails from Anambra state is apparently a businessman based in Lagos state and he is married to an Asian woman named Maria Nester Oguike.

Maria is particularly from Pakistan but she currently lives with her family in Lagos state, Nigeria.

biography of oguike family

The Oguike parents were neither famous in the entertainment industry nor the media but they are proud parents of the three young movie stars. They helped their children find their feet in Nollywood and have since been supportive of their acting careers.

Nesta and Maria also have a son whom they named Zion. The little kid is much younger than his female siblings but she is equally a popular face you will find on each of his sisters’ social media timelines.

The Oguike Sisters Started Their Acting Career in 2017

The Oguike sisters began acting almost at the same time. They made their first film appearance in the Soulmate studio film, “My Kids and I”. The 2017 film has the three sisters acting as American returnees with rude characters except for Chinenye who played “Annabelle” a well-brought-up kid.

The movie also has famous Nigerian actor Bolanle Ninalowo appearing as the father of the three sisters who had a tough time curtailing the excesses of his children.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by chidinma oguike (@chidinmaoguike1)

The Oguike sisters became famous through their debut film roles. The movie did earn them a much deserving recognition in the competitive movie industry. It helped them gain more movie roles including “Home Alone”  and “Little things”.

Chidinma Oguike has also featured alone in the movie titled “Home Teacher” where she was sexually abused by her home teacher. The kid’s acting talents have seen them work with Nollywood great minds like Nadia Buari , Tana Adelana, Gideon Okeke, and Adaeze Onuigbo.

Aside from being popular faces on our TV screens, the three sisters are social media influencers with massive followers. Chisom have the highest of them all with over a hundred thousand followers on Instagram. While she is yet to sign endorsement deals with any known company brand, we are certain she earns quite enough to fix her basic needs.

Are the Oguike Sisters still Acting?

The Oguike sisters have no doubt been quite scarce in movie scenes, making many of their fans ask questions about their whereabouts. The beautiful sisters of wealthy parents are still active in the Nollywood industry although they may choose to pay more attention to their academic careers.

The girls who are now all grown up still combine their education with their great acting talent. Recently, the kids appeared in the movies titled “Little Things” and “Mother’s Lie”.

Meanwhile, Chisom who appears to be more committed to her acting career has taking more movie roles than her sisters. The young actress has recently featured in such films as “Now the Four of Us”, alongside actors like Christian Ochiagha and Debby Felix; “Tanaka (return of the dead)”, and lots more.

'The Life & Murder of Nicole Brown Simpson': Family, friends shed light on infamous case in new documentary

Nicole brown simpson's family and friends speak out in a new documentary about her relationship with o.j. simpson.

Nicole Brown Simpson's sisters recall O.J. Simpson verdict: 'I was just numb'

Nicole Brown Simpson's sisters recalled the infamous O.J. Simpson verdict during a recent interview.

At the onset of "The Life & Murder of Nicole Brown Simpson," a producer is heard instructing interview subjects to use specific names as they recall Nicole's life and their memories surrounding her death. Denise Brown, Nicole's outspoken older sister, replies that "there's only one name I don't want to say, if you don't mind."

Of course, she was referring to O.J. Simpson , who was infamously accused of murdering Nicole and waiter Ron Goldman at Nicole's Brentwood, Los Angeles, home June 12, 1994.

A day after Simpson died of metastatic prostate cancer at the age of 76 this year, Lifetime announced the release of the four-part documentary airing Saturday, just days before the 30th anniversary of Nicole's death.

Nicole's sisters Denise, Tanya Brown and Dominique Brown are joined by starlets such as Kris Jenner and Faye Resnick and a number of the slain woman's friends and law enforcement officers who interacted with Nicole in an effort to portray the woman beyond her death and relationship with the embattled football player.

NICOLE BROWN SIMPSON WAS LIVING IN FEAR OF OJ BEFORE HER MURDER, SISTERS SAY

"I want to exorcise from my mind a girl laying on the sidewalk in a little black dress in a pool of blood — that's not who she was," Nicole's friend, Ron Hardy, told filmmakers. "I just cathartically want to talk about her, talk about who she was, what she was to me, what she was to other people and how I will never, never regret meeting her."

Previously, Nicole was remembered only by photographs that circulated after her death, including the Polaroids documenting bruising to her face that were stowed in her safe deposit box and entered as evidence in Simpson's criminal trial.

But archival footage throughout the documentary shows Nicole as a child with her mother, then in footage as a mother herself, cooing over her children on the beach. Stories from the couple's Laguna Beach vacation home contrast with the innocent scenes. Nicole's sister Dominique said that a pall fell over the otherwise lively home anytime Simpson walked in. A bystander recalls spotting the former football star on the beach with his wife, then watching in shock as he struck Nicole so hard she fell into the waves.

It is impossible to separate Simpson from Nicole's story. The pair met when she was just 18, and after their 15 years of dating and marriage, Simpson continued to figure heavily in her life through their children and incessant stalking, according to friends and family.

"She said, 'He is never going to leave me alone. I'm never going to get rid of him,'" Denise recalled of one of many times the couple got back together. "'I may as well go back to him.'"

Through their stories, Nicole's loved ones paint a picture of the years of abuse she underwent, often bemoaning that they looked past warning signs until it was too late.

"I hope that by keeping her memory alive, the person that she really was, that maybe it could help someone out there who was another Nicole," friend Robin Greer said. "Get out of something that might ruin their lives or take their lives."

OJ SIMPSON'S CAUSE OF DEATH REVEALED

"I thought, 'I can't help Nicole, but maybe I can save another life,'" Denise said, speaking on her lifelong commitment to education about domestic violence. "It's something that no one wants to talk about. I said 'No, we're going to talk about it.'"

Simpson was 30 when he met Nicole at the club where she worked. Her friend and roommate at the time, David Lebon, recalled that there were signs of violence right after Simpson took her on their first date in his Rolls-Royce.

"When she came home, her pants were ripped, the zipper," Lebon said. "I said Nicole, what happened to you? And she said, ‘He got a little forceful.’ … [She told me to] calm down. I was pissed."

Also interviewed was an LAPD police officer who, by bizarre chance, responded both to Nicole and Goldman's murders and to a domestic violence call involving Simpson's first wife Marguerite years earlier.

OJ SIMPSON DEAD: GROUNDBREAKING 1990S MURDER TRIAL FOLLOWED LA'S HEATED RACIAL TENSIONS

"In the course of the argument, he got violent. Struck her. As far as I remember, he pulled out a clump of her hair," Terry Schauer said of his response to the home Simpson and Marguerite shared. "She just wanted to leave the house, and she had no transportation — she wouldn't sign a report. She said, 'My husband is O.J. Simpson, the football player.'"

About 20 years later, Schauer responded to Nicole's home in Garden Grove after neighbors found her and Goldman dead.

"The officer that was there first told me that he worked that area quite a bit. He said [that police calls were] a very common occurrence at that house with O.J. That's what jogged my memory about Marguerite Simpson," Schauer said.

Simpson's first wife has publicly denied there was any abuse.

OJ SIMPSON ESTATE EXECUTOR VOWS TO CONTEST $33.5M PAYOUT: ‘GOLDMANS GET ZERO, NOTHING’

Nicole's friends recall her constant unease even after separating from Simpson. In one instance, Simpson saw his ex-wife kissing another man through a large window of her living room during one of his many nights stalking her. He ripped her front door off its hinges in his subsequent meltdown.

On Nicole's final night alive, Dominique recalled Nicole pointing out Simpson's car passing the restaurant where they were eating. Somehow, Denise said, their mother was "eerily quiet" and seemed to know that something was amiss that night.

She had left her glasses at the restaurant. Goldman, a waiter there , brought them to Nicole's home, where he was later killed, the family said.

Denise recalled hearing the awful news June 12, 1994.

"It's six o'clock in the morning, and all of a sudden I hear this … gut-wrenching curdling scream out of my parents' bedroom," she said. "My mom was on her knees, and my dad was on his elbow just looking up at her. I pick up the phone and I said, 'Who is this' and he said, ‘It’s [a detective].' …  He says, 'Your sister's been killed.' I said 'Oh my God, he did it, he finally did it, oh my God."

The relatives described Simpson mourning alongside them at Nicole's funeral and their disquieting uncertainty about his guilt. When asked directly if he was responsible for her death on a car ride afterward, family friend D'Anne Purcilly recalled that he looked down at his hands and repeatedly said, "I loved her too much."

FLASHBACK: OJ SIMPSON ON NICOLE BROWN SIMPSON

After Nicole's death, the specter of their sister's jealous ex-husband was replaced by the constant whir of helicopters and press attention. Before Simpson was acquitted of murder in court and regained custody of his children, Dominique recalled, their parents removed all the TVs from their home so that the children could be sheltered from the constant media coverage.

Although they are pictured heavily alongside their mother in family footage, Nicole's children with Simpson did not participate in the documentary, nor did Simpson's three children from his previous marriage. Sydney and Justin , just 8 and 5 years old, respectively, when their mother died, are now parents themselves and avoid the spotlight, Nicole's family explains.

But much of the film gives an unprecedented window into their experience at the center of the murder that captured the nation.

"One night I was tucking (Sydney) into bed, and we were talking, and she said ‘Denise, is my daddy in jail?’ Nicole's sister recalled. "I said, ‘Yes.’ She said, 'Is my daddy going to die?' I said, ‘No, why?’ And she said, 'People who kill other people, don't they kill them?'"

Purcilly recalled another uncomfortable conversation with the girl shortly after her father was released from prison.

"When he got out of jail, he kept voicing how important it was ... to be with Sydney for her birthday. He got home, went to the Browns', picked up Sidney and took them to Neverland ... Michael Jackson's property ," Purcilly recalled.

"She asked if next time we could take [my kids] to Neverland [with them]. I sat down with her and said, 'Sydney, you have to understand that I will never let my boys go be with your dad. Because I believe your dad killed your mother, and I can't let my children go there.' She just kind of looked at me and said, 'Yeah, I know.'"

Along with her strong will, vibrant energy and generosity, friends and family remembered Nicole as a doting mother.

"She didn't get to see them grow up. She didn't get to see them have kids and a life and graduate. He killed her before she could do anything," Denise said. "I was angry for 13 years after Nicole's murder. I realized while we were here, I still have a lot of anger in me.

"He f---ed up our whole family," said Denise. "How could one person f--- up so many people's lives?"

‘The Life and Murder of Nicole Brown Simpson' Doc: "People Are Actually Going to Hear Her Voice"

In introductory behind-the-scenes footage, Lifetime 's four-part docuseries The Life and Murder of Nicole Brown Simpson sees a producer instructing interview subjects to use specific names when referencing individuals. Nicole Brown Simpson's older sister, Denise Brown, replies, "There's only one name I don't want to say, if you don't mind - ever."

That name is O.J. Simpson , Nicole's ex-husband who famously stood trial and was acquitted of her murder and that of her friend, Ron Goldman, both of whom were found stabbed to death in her Brentwood, Los Angeles, home on June 12, 1994. O.J. died of metastatic prostate cancer on April 11 at the age of 76. The following day, Lifetime announced the forthcoming documentary, which coincides with the 30-year anniversary of Nicole's death.

Denise's opening declaration underscores the intention of the two-night event, which is to allow the world to get to know who Nicole was as a mother, daughter, sister and friend - an individual outside of her tumultuous relationship with O.J.

"People are actually going to hear her voice," Nicole's younger sister Tanya Brown tells The Hollywood Reporter . "I forgot what she sounded like. The only recording I remembered was her 911 call, and I don't want to remember my sister's voice in fear. I want to hear her playing on the beach with her kids saying, ‘Hi Sydney' [to her daughter]."

Audiences will get to hear such recordings and see personal photos of Nicole as her sisters - Denise, Dominique and Tanya, along with family friends - share memories about Nicole's childhood in the exclusive Monarch Bay neighborhood of Orange County, California, and her aspirations as a young woman.

"There are 50 interviews that we did for this series, and for the 50 that agreed, we reached out to countless others to interview and try to build as comprehensive and dynamic a story as possible," Jesse Daniels ( Surviving R. Kelly ), an executive producer of the documentary, tells THR , about how the long-in-the-works project was pieced together. Featured voices include Nicole's friends, Kris Jenner , Faye Resnick and Kato Kaelin, the latter whose witness testimony made him a prominent figure of the 1995 trial for Nicole and Goldman's murders.

Still, so much of Nicole's short life was about O.J., whom she met when she was just 18 in June of 1977 while working as a hostess at a restaurant called The Daisy. According to the documentary, the pro football player's alleged bad behavior began not long after. When Nicole returned to the home of singer-songwriter David Lebón (a family friend whom she was living with in Hollywood at the time), after her first date with O.J., he noticed that the zipper of her jeans was ripped.

"I said, ‘Nicole what happened to you?'" Lebón recalls in the documentary. "He got a little forceful," he says of her response, to which he says he replied, "Why would you let him do that to you? Why on your first date?"

The depth of O.J.'s alleged abuse is exposed in journals Nicole left behind, detailing years of psychological and physical mistreatment, including his affairs with other women. Denise also details her experience witnessing O.J.'s violent outbursts at times over the years, though many incidents Nicole never revealed to her sisters or friends.

"I think the diary entries coupled with our interviews give viewers a comprehensive look at the abuse that was happening behind closed doors for so many years, and the lengths to which Nicole fought it in her own way, sometimes just alone by herself," says Daniels. "That was a huge focus of ours. This story is not just about her murder, it was about the years leading up to it."

The documentary sheds light on the years after as well, and the toll that Nicole's murder took on her family, starting from the moment they first heard the news of her death.

"All three of us had three different experiences," explains Tanya to THR . "That morning was horrific. Hearing Denise scream - Dominique was already off to work - you could combine every Michael Myers, Jason and every other horror movie together. I remember going into Denise's son Sean's room, she was cradling him and I was like, ‘What's going on?' ‘Coco's dead.' And I said, ‘What do you mean? Coco, who?' And Denise said, ‘Nicole, your sister.' And I'm like, ‘How's that possible? You just saw her last night.'

‘I remember going down the hallway and I saw my mom at the kitchen table, and she was white, just pale. The life was taken out from under her. And I said, ‘Dita, is it true?' And she couldn't answer," Tanya recalls of their mother, Judith "Dita" Brown. "I went back to my dad, and he was just pounding his forearm on the bathroom sink. I was like, ‘Daddy, is it true?' He said, ‘It's true.'"

In the 30 years since Nicole's death, Denise has become a noted public speaker on domestic violence. She and her sisters see the documentary, which is part of Lifetime's Stop Violence Against Women initiative, as an extension of her yearslong advocacy.

"There's a whole new generation to educate when it comes to the issues of domestic violence and things that happened to Nicole," Denise tells THR of the purpose of the docuseries. "I asked my sisters, Dominique and Tanya, ‘What do you guys think?' and we all agreed that this probably is the last time that we will do something, the three of us together, for our sister. Something that we are going to be proud of, something that's going to last a lifetime for us."

The Life and Murder of Nicole Brown Simpson premieres June 1 and 2 at 8 p.m. ET/PT on Lifetime. The project is produced by Bunim/Murray Productions for Lifetime. Additional executive producers include Melissa Moore ( The Prison Confessions of Gypsy Rose Blanchard ), Rit Saraswat ( Surviving R. Kelly: Part II ) and Brie Miranda Bryant ( Where is Wendy Williams? , Janet Jackson , Surviving R. Kelly ).

Hallmark star Mamie Laverock 'doing well' after 5-story hospital balcony fall: Family

by JULIA VARNIER | The National Desk

(TND) — When Calls the Heart fans can share a sigh of relief as Mamie Laverock is "is doing well" after a 5-story hospital balcony fall , according to her family.

On May 30, in an update posted to Rob and Nicole Compton’s GoFundMe campaign for their Mamie, 19, the family wrote she was “out of her big surgeries.” They also confirmed that doctors now say she's “doing well.”

“It’s impossible for us to be happier,” Laverock’s parents continued. “Thank you all for your support.”

According to the GoFundMe campaign, after spending two weeks in “intensive treatment” in the hospital due to a “medical emergency” that had happened earlier in May, Laverock “was escorted out of a secure unit of the hospital and taken up to a balcony walkway from which she fell five stories,” per the fundraiser page, which was set up by her parents, Rob and Nicole Compton.

“She sustained life threatening injuries, has undergone multiple extensive surgeries and is currently on life support,” Laverock’s parents wrote on May 26.

Before “When Calls the Heart,” Laverock debuted in the 2012 rom-com “ This Means War ” starring Reese Witherspoon and appeared in “A Series of Unfortunate Events.”

“When Calls the Heart” (airing Sundays at 9 p.m.) is based on a series of books of the same name, and has aired on Hallmark since 2014, the New York Post described . It follows a teacher (Erin Krakow) working in a small coal mining town.

Laverock stars as Rosaleen Sullivan, a nursing student whose father was killed in a mining accident.

The show’s star, Krakow, took to Instagram asking her followers to donate to the fund.

Johannah Newmarch, who plays Laverock’s on-screen mother Molly Sullivan, also posted about Laverock on X.

The New York Post reached out to Hallmark Media for comment, to which they replied in a statement: “We are deeply saddened to hear the news about Mamie. As a beloved member of our ‘When Calls the Heart’ community, we wish her and her family peace, comfort and many prayers during this difficult time.”

As of May 30, the campaign has raised nearly $32,000 in donations to their fundraiser -- which originally had a $30,000 goal.

Marco Troper, son of former YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki, died from an accidental overdose

biography of oguike family

The cause of death for the 19-year-old son of former YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki has been revealed. He died of an accidental overdose, according to the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office.

Marco Troper was found dead around 4 p.m. in his dorm room at the University of California, Berkeley (UC Berkeley), on Feb. 13, the Alameda County Sheriff's Office said. Esther Wojcicki, an American journalist and educator, further confirmed her grandson's death in a Facebook post shared in February saying, "Tragedy hit my family yesterday My beloved grandson Marco Troper, age 19 passed away yesterday. Our family is devastated beyond comprehension."

Troper's autopsy found high concentrations of cocaine, amphetamine, alprazolam (Xanax), a medication prescribed to manage panic and anxiety disorders, and hydroxyzine , an antihistamine used to treat allergies and anxiety, in his system, according to the Alameda County Sheriff's Office's Coroner Bureau's investigator's report.

The levels of alprazolam and cocaine in Troper's blood were high enough to cause death, according to the coroner's report. Low levels of delta-9, a more abundant form of THC, were found in the college student's blood, the report shows.

Troper suffered from "chronic substance abuse" and he had a fractured right wrist from a scooter incident that occurred two weeks before his death, the report says.

Marco Troper's death ruled 'accidental'

Troper's official cause of death was ruled "acute combined drug toxicity," according to the report, which also declared the overdose as "accidental."

Authorities found illegal and prescription drugs, including Percocet and Oxycodone" in "abundance" at the scene of the incident, the report says. No evidence of physical trauma was observed, the report continued.

Brandi Foscalina, with the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office Coroner’s Bureau, told USA TODAY that the investigation into Troper's death is "considered closed."

'Macro's life was cut too short'

In Esther Wojcicki's Facebook post, she described her grandson as the "most kind, loving, smart, fun and beautiful human being."

"Marco's life was cut too short," Wojcicki wrote in the Facebook post. "And we are all devastated, thinking about all the opportunities and life experiences that he will miss and we will miss together. Marco, we all love you and miss you more than you will ever know."

Before Troper's death, Wojcicki said he was beginning his second semester as a freshman at UC Berkeley and majoring in math. She also called Troper's fraternity Zeta Psi and dormmates at Stern Hall on the college's campus his "strong community."

"At home, he would tell us endless stories of his life and friends at Berkeley," Wojcicki wrote in her Facebook post.

Who is former YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki?

Troper is the son of Susan Wojcicki, who served as CEO of YouTube from 2014 to 2023.

Susan Wojcicki has over 20 years in the tech industry dating back to when she became involved in the creation of Google in 1998 by renting out her garage as an office to the company's founders, Larry Page and Sergey Brin, according to The Guardian . She would go on to become Google's first marketing manager in 1999 and later became the head of the company's online advertising business and original video service, the outlet said.

"Twenty-five years ago I made the decision to join a couple of Stanford graduate students who were building a new search engine," Susan Wojcicki wrote in a blog post on Feb. 16, 2023, announcing her resignation. "Their names were Larry and Sergey. I saw the potential of what they were building, which was incredibly exciting, and although the company had only a few users and no revenue, I decided to join the team."

Wojcicki's blog post continued to say how after 25 years, she plans to step back from her role at YouTube and "start a new chapter" focused on her "family, health, and personal projects (she is) passionate about."

"I always dreamed of working for a company with a mission that could change the world for the better," Wojcicki wrote in the blog post. "Thanks to (Page's and Brin's) vision, I got the chance to live that dream. It has been an absolute privilege to be a part of it, and I’m excited for what’s next."

Marian Robinson, the mother of Michelle Obama who lived in the White House, dies at 86

Marian Shields Robinson, the mother of Michelle Obama, has died at age 86

WASHINGTON — On election night 2008, as Barack Obama sat nervously in a Chicago hotel suite and awaited news on whether he would become the country’s first Black president, his mother-in-law was by his side.

“Are you ready for this, Grandma?” Obama asked Marian Shields Robinson, who years earlier had doubted that he and her daughter, Michelle, would last.

Six months, tops, she had predicted.

“Never one to overemote, my mom just gave him a sideways look and shrugged, causing them both to smile,” Michelle Obama wrote in her memoir, “Becoming.” “Later, though, she’d describe to me how overcome she’d felt right then, struck just as I’d been by his vulnerability. America had come to see Barack as self-assured and powerful, but my mother also recognized the gravity of the passage, the loneliness of the job ahead.”

She continued: “The next time I looked over, I saw that she and Barack were holding hands.”

The union of Barack and Michelle Obama, the 20-something lawyers who met one summer while working at a Chicago law firm, endured and made history. In her own way, Mrs. Robinson would, too.

She died peacefully on Friday, the former first lady and her brother, Craig Robinson, and their families announced in a statement.

“There was and will be only one Marian Robinson,” they said. “In our sadness, we are lifted up by the extraordinary gift of her life. And we will spend the rest of ours trying to live up to her example.”

Besides being the mother of the nation’s first Black first lady, Mrs. Robinson was also unusual for being one of the few in-laws who lived at the White House with the president and his immediate family.

Until January 2009, Mrs. Robinson had lived her entire life in Chicago. She was a widow and in her early 70s when Obama was elected in 2008 and resisted the idea of starting over in Washington. President Obama said the family suggested she try Washington for three months before deciding. The first lady enlisted her brother to help persuade their mother to move.

“There were many good and valid reasons that Michelle raised with me, not the least of which was the opportunity to continue spending time with my granddaughters, Malia and Sasha, and to assist in giving them a sense of normalcy that is a priority for both of their parents, as has been from the time Barack began his political career,” Mrs. Robinson wrote in the foreword to “A Game of Character,” a memoir by her son, formerly the head men’s basketball coach at Oregon State University.

“My feeling, however, was that I could visit periodically without actually moving in and still be there for the girls,” she said.

Mrs. Robinson said her son understood why she wanted to stay in Chicago, but still used a line of reasoning on her that she would use on him and his sister. He asked her to think of the move as an opportunity to grow and try something new.

“As a compromise, I opted to move to the White House after all, at least temporarily, while still reserving lots of time to travel and maintain a certain amount of autonomy,” she wrote.

Granddaughters Malia and Sasha were just 10 and 7, respectively, when they started to call the executive mansion home in 2009 after their dad became president. In Chicago, Mrs. Robinson had become almost a surrogate parent to them during the presidential campaign. She retired from her job as a bank secretary to help shuttle them around.

At the White House, she was a reassuring presence, and her lack of Secret Service protection made it possible for her to accompany them to and from school daily without fanfare.

“I would not be who I am today without the steady hand and unconditional love of my mother, Marian Shields Robinson,” Michelle Obama wrote in her memoir. “She has always been my rock, allowing me the freedom to be who I am, while never allowing my feet to get too far off the ground. Her boundless love for my girls, and her willingness to put our needs before her own, gave me the comfort and confidence to venture out into the world knowing they were safe and cherished at home.”

Her White House life was not limited to caring for her granddaughters.

Mrs. Robinson enjoyed a level of anonymity that the president and first lady openly envied, allowing her to come and go from the White House as often as she pleased on shopping trips around town, to the president’s box at the Kennedy Center and to Las Vegas or to visit her other grandchildren in Portland, Oregon. She gave a few media interviews but never to White House press.

She attended some White House events, including concerts, the annual Easter Egg Roll and National Christmas Tree lighting, and was a guest at some state dinners.

White House residency also opened up the world to Mrs. Robinson, who had been widowed for nearly 20 years when she moved to a room on the third floor, one floor above the first family.

She had never traveled outside the U.S. until she moved to Washington, taking her first flight abroad on Air Force One in 2009 when the Obamas visited France. She joined them on a trip to Russia, Italy and Ghana later that year, during which she got to meet Pope Benedict, tour Rome’s ancient Colosseum and view a former slave-holding compound on the African coast.

She also accompanied her daughter and granddaughters on two overseas trips without the president to South Africa and Botswana in 2011, and China in 2014.

Craig Robinson wrote that he and his parents doubted whether his sister’s relationship with Obama would last, though Fraser Robinson III and his wife thought the young lawyer was a worthy suitor for their daughter, also a lawyer. Craig Robinson and his parents were sitting on the front porch of their Chicago home one hot summer night when Obama and his sister stopped by on their way to a movie.

Her parents exchanged knowing glances as soon as the couple departed. “Too bad,” Mrs. Robinson said. “Yep,” answered Fraser Robinson. “She’ll eat him alive.”

Craig Robinson wrote that his mother gave the relationship six months. Barack and Michelle Obama tied the knot on Oct. 3, 1992 and have been married for 31 years.

Marian Lois Shields Robinson was born in Chicago on July 30, 1937. She attended two years of teaching college, married in 1960 and, as a stay-at-home mom, stressed the importance of education to her children. Both were educated at Ivy League schools, each with a bachelor’s degree from Princeton. Michelle Obama also has a law degree from Harvard.

Fraser Robinson was a pump operator for the Chicago Water Department. He had multiple sclerosis and died in 1991.

Besides the Obama family, Mrs. Robinson is survived by her son, Craig, his wife, Kelly, and their children Avery, Austin, Aaron and Leslie.
