Begin by reflecting on your shared memories with the couple and why this day is so meaningful to them. Then, include anecdotes showcasing your best friend’s character and relationship with their spouse. Understanding Your Role as the Best Friend

Your responsibilities.

As the best friend of the bride or groom, your role during the wedding is crucial. One of your primary responsibilities is to write and deliver a heartfelt wedding speech for your best friend that celebrates the couple and entertains the guests.

Expectations

To carry out your responsibilities effectively, certain expectations are placed upon you as the best friend.

Planning Your Speech

To craft a memorable best friend wedding speech, start by organizing your thoughts into a clear structure.

Begin with an introduction, where you introduce yourself and your relationship to the bride or groom. Next, share a couple of personal anecdotes or memories that highlight your friendship and the couple’s love story.

When planning your speech, aim for an optimal length of around 3 to 5 minutes. This will give you enough time to share meaningful stories and express your sentiments without taking up too much time during the reception.

Remember, brevity is key – keep your anecdotes concise and avoid going off on tangents.

A structure suggestion:

Time Management

While practicing, consider using a timer to monitor your speech’s length, aiming to stay within the 3-5 minute timeframe.

Incorporate Anecdotes and Memories

Incorporating anecdotes and memories into your best friend’s wedding speech can make it more personal and engaging. To craft an unforgettable speech, follow these tips and techniques.

Choosing Stories

Consider discussing key life events, inside jokes, or a special memory that truly captures your bond, but always be mindful of the audience and setting.

Balance Humor and Sentimentality

It’s important to find the right balance between humor and sentimentality in your speech. Here are some pointers:

Tips for Engaging the Audience

Engage in eye contact.

Maintaining eye contact with your audience is essential for building rapport and showing confidence. While it can be challenging, particularly when you’re nervous, strive to look at various guests directly for brief moments as you speak. It helps create a connection and demonstrates that you’re genuinely interested in sharing your thoughts and feelings with everyone.

Voice Projection

By mastering eye contact and voice projection, you’ll be well on your way to delivering a captivating best friend wedding speech that will leave a lasting impression on your audience.

Just remember to keep it genuine, heartfelt, and concise to ensure a memorable moment for your best friend and partner.

Overcoming Nervousness and Anxiety

Preparation techniques.

Here are some tips to help you prepare:

Breathing Exercises

Breathing exercises can help calm your nerves and enable you to focus better during your speech.

Try these techniques when you start feeling anxious:

Four-Seven-Eight Breathing: Inhale through your nose for four seconds, hold your breath for seven seconds, and exhale slowly through your mouth for eight seconds. Repeat this cycle four times.

Progressive Muscle Relaxation: Tense different muscle groups in your body while inhaling, then release the tension while exhaling. Start from your toes and work your way up to your head.

Incorporate these breathing exercises into your regular routine or practice them just before giving your speech to help you overcome wedding speech nerves . Remember to maintain a steady breathing pattern throughout your speech to stay relaxed and focused.

Best Friend Wedding Speech Examples

If you’re feeling stuck on how to start crafting your speech, here are some examples that can help get the creative juices flowing:

“I’ve known [bride/groom] since we were kids, and I have to say, I never thought I’d see the day when they’d actually settle down and get married. But here we are! [Bride/groom], you’ve always been the life of the party, and I have a feeling that’s not going to change now that you’re married. [Partner], you’re in for a wild ride, but trust me, it’s going to be a blast. I remember when [bride/groom], and I were in high school, and we used to sneak out of the house to go to parties. [Bride/groom] was always the one with the crazy ideas, like jumping into the pool fully clothed or trying to sneak into the VIP section. And now, [partner], you get to experience all of that craziness for the rest of your life. But in all seriousness, [bride/groom], I’m so happy that you’ve found someone who loves you just as much as I do. Congratulations, you two!”
“I’ve had the pleasure of being [bride/groom]’s best friend for years now, and I have to say, I’ve never seen them as happy as they are now with [partner]. [Bride/groom], you’ve always been there for me through thick and thin, and I know you’ll be there for [partner], too. And [partner], you’re not just marrying [bride/groom]; you’re marrying into our crazy group of friends. Welcome to the family! I remember when [bride/groom], and I first met in college, and we used to stay up all night watching cheesy rom-coms and eating ice cream. And now, [partner], you get to join us for all of that fun. But in all seriousness, [bride/groom], I’m so happy that you’ve found your soulmate. You deserve all the happiness in the world. Congratulations, you two!”
“As [bride/groom]’s best friend, I feel like I have a responsibility to share some embarrassing stories about them. But honestly, [bride/groom] has always been the responsible one in our group, so I don’t have much dirt to dish. [Partner], you’re lucky to have found someone as kind, caring, and responsible as [bride/groom]. And [bride/groom], you’re lucky to have found someone who puts up with your terrible jokes. I remember when [bride/groom], and I were in college, and we used to study together for hours on end. [Bride/groom] was always the one who had all the answers while I was struggling to keep up. And now, [partner], you get to experience all of that intelligence and wit for the rest of your life. But in all seriousness, [bride/groom], I’m so happy that you’ve found your perfect match. You two are truly meant to be together. Congratulations!”

In this article, we will guide you through the process of writing a touching best friend speech that will leave a lasting impression on the newlyweds and the guests.

The Importance of a Best Friend Speech at a Wedding

A best friend speech holds a significant place in any wedding celebration. It is an opportunity for you, as the closest confidant, to express your love, admiration, and support for the couple. Your words have the power to bring tears of joy, laughter, and nostalgic memories to the surface. It is a chance to celebrate the journey of your friendship and to toast to the couple’s future together.

Step-by-Step Guide to Writing a Memorable Best Friend Speech

Understanding the couple and their journey.

Begin your best friend speech by illuminating the unique love story shared by the newlyweds. Reflect on how they met, the milestones they’ve achieved together, and the challenges they’ve overcome as a couple. Show your understanding of their journey and let the audience feel the strength of their bond.

Reflecting on the Friendship

Transition to sharing anecdotes and memories that showcase the deep connection between you and the bride/groom. These stories can range from humorous escapades to heartfelt moments that demonstrate the unwavering support and unwritten bond of friendship you have shared throughout the years.

Sharing Heartfelt Stories and Memories

Take a moment to recall meaningful moments and experiences you have had together. Whether it’s a shared adventure, a challenging time, or simply times of laughter and joy, these stories will add depth and emotion to your speech. Let the warmth of your emotions shine through as you recount these cherished memories.

Highlighting the Qualities of the Bride/Groom

Shift the focus to the bride or groom, highlighting their exceptional qualities and accomplishments. Talk about their kindness, strength, compassion, and any other admirable traits that make them deserving of their partner. Make sure to capture the essence of their personality and their impact on your life.

Adding Humor and Light-hearted Moments

A well-placed joke or a light-hearted anecdote can add laughter and levity to your best friend speech. Share a funny story that showcases the couple’s sense of humor or the amusing situations you’ve encountered together. Remember to keep the humor tasteful and appropriate for the occasion.

Expressing Wishes and Concluding on a Positive Note

As you wrap up your speech, offer your heartfelt wishes for the newlyweds’ future together. Express your hopes for a lifetime of love, happiness, and shared adventures. End with a positive and uplifting closing that leaves the audience with a sense of joy and optimism.

Tips for Delivering a Confident and Impressive Speech

While the content of your speech is essential, the delivery plays an equally important role in making it impactful. Here are a few tips to help you deliver your best friend speech with confidence:

  • Practice and Rehearse Ahead of Time: Familiarize yourself with the flow and timing of your speech to ensure a smooth delivery.
  • Maintain Good Eye Contact with the Audience: Connect with the listeners by making eye contact to establish a personal connection.
  • Use Gestures and Body Language Effectively: Incorporate natural gestures and body language to enhance your speech and engage the audience.
  • Speak Clearly and Audibly: Enunciate your words clearly and project your voice to ensure everyone can hear you.
  • Pace Yourself and Control Nervousness: Take deep breaths, speak at a moderate pace, and maintain composure to keep nerves at bay.

Common Mistakes to Avoid in a Best Friend Speech

While crafting your speech, be mindful of common pitfalls that can diminish its impact:

  • Rambling or Going Off on Tangents: Stay focused and stick to the key points to keep your speech concise and engaging.
  • Being Insensitive or Tactless: Avoid controversial or inappropriate topics that may offend the couple or guests.
  • Using Inside Jokes That Only a Few Will Understand: Aim for inclusivity by sharing stories that resonate with a broader audience.
  • Not Giving Equal Attention to the Bride and Groom: Ensure your speech balances anecdotes and compliments for both partners.
  • Ignoring the Time Limit: Respect the allocated time and keep your speech within a reasonable duration to maintain interest.

Starting with a Bang: How to Open Your Speech

The opening of your speech sets the tone for the rest of your message. It's your chance to grab the audience's attention and make a strong first impression.

You could start with a humorous anecdote about your friend, a touching story about how the couple met, or a heartfelt expression of your joy for their special day.

Remember, the key is to be authentic and speak from the heart. This will help you connect with the audience and make your speech more engaging.

Crafting the Body of Your Speech: Content and Stories

The body of your speech is where you share the heart of your message. This is where you tell stories, share memories, and express your feelings about the couple.

You might talk about the qualities that make your friend a wonderful person, share a funny or touching story about the couple, or reflect on the journey they've taken to reach this day.

Remember to balance humor and sentiment, and to speak in a way that reflects your genuine affection for the couple.

Concluding with Impact: Ending Your Speech on a High Note

The conclusion of your speech is your chance to leave a lasting impression. It's where you express your wishes for the couple's future and propose a toast to their happiness.

You might end with a heartfelt wish, a memorable quote, or a simple expression of your love and support for the couple.

Remember, the goal is to leave the audience feeling moved and uplifted, and to create a moment that the couple will remember fondly.

Personalizing Your Message: Tips and Ideas

A great wedding speech is one that is personal and heartfelt. It should reflect your unique relationship with the couple and the shared experiences that have shaped your friendship.

Consider the qualities that make your friend special, the memories you've created together, and the journey they've taken with their partner. These elements can help you craft a message that is both personal and meaningful.

Remember to be authentic and speak from the heart. This will help you connect with the audience and make your speech more engaging.

Also, consider the couple's cultural and religious backgrounds. This can help you tailor your message to their values and traditions, making your speech more relevant and respectful.

Finally, remember to keep the focus on the couple. Your speech is a tribute to their love story, so make sure it celebrates their journey and their future together.

Incorporating Humor: Making Them Laugh Without Going Overboard

Humor can be a great tool in a wedding speech. It can lighten the mood, engage the audience, and create memorable moments.

However, it's important to use humor wisely. Avoid jokes that could be offensive or inappropriate, and steer clear of inside jokes that the majority of guests won't understand.

Remember, the goal is to make the audience smile and laugh, not to embarrass the couple or make guests feel uncomfortable.

Sharing Emotions: How to Touch Hearts

A wedding is an emotional event, and your speech should reflect this. Don't be afraid to express your feelings and share heartfelt sentiments.

You might talk about the joy you feel for the couple, the admiration you have for their relationship, or the hope you have for their future.

Remember, it's okay to show emotion in your speech. It shows your genuine affection for the couple and can help create a touching moment that they'll remember.

Using Quotes and Anecdotes Effectively

Quotes and anecdotes can add depth and interest to your speech. They can help illustrate your points, add humor, or convey a particular sentiment.

When choosing a quote , consider the couple's interests and values. A quote from a favorite book, movie, or public figure could add a personal touch to your speech.

Anecdotes, on the other hand, should be short, relevant, and engaging. They should highlight the couple's qualities, reflect their relationship, or share a memorable moment.

Remember, the key is to use quotes and anecdotes that enhance your message and resonate with the couple and the audience.

Speech Delivery: Mastering the Art of Presentation

Delivering a wedding speech is more than just reading words off a page. It's about engaging the audience, conveying emotion, and creating a memorable experience.

One of the key aspects of speech delivery is pacing. Speak slowly and clearly, allowing for pauses for effect or laughter. This will help your audience follow along and absorb your message.

Body language is also important. Use gestures and facial expressions to convey your emotions and emphasize your points. This can make your speech more dynamic and engaging.

Remember to make eye contact with your audience. This can help you connect with them and make your speech more personal.

Finally, be mindful of your tone. It should be confident but not arrogant, and it should reflect the mood and content of your speech.

Practice Makes Perfect: Rehearsing Your Speech

Rehearsing your speech is crucial for a smooth delivery. It can help you familiarize yourself with your content, improve your pacing, and build your confidence.

Try to practice your speech in a setting similar to the wedding venue. This can help you get used to the acoustics and layout, and prepare for any potential distractions.

Remember, practice is not about memorizing your speech word for word. It's about understanding your content well enough to deliver it naturally and confidently.

If you'd like to get feedback from an unbiased expert, Provenance can connect you with a professional public speaking expert.

Engaging Your Audience: Eye Contact and Body Language

Engaging your audience is key to a successful speech. One way to do this is through eye contact. This can help you connect with your audience and make your speech more personal.

Remember, your goal is to make your audience feel included in your speech. So, engage them with your eyes, your body language, and your words.

Handling Nerves: Staying Calm and Collected

It's natural to feel nervous before giving a speech. However, there are strategies you can use to manage your nerves and deliver your speech with confidence.

First, remember to breathe. Deep, slow breaths can help calm your nerves and steady your voice.

Second, focus on your message, not on yourself. Remember, you're there to honor your friend and their partner, not to impress the audience with your public speaking skills.

Finally, remember that the audience is on your side. They're there to celebrate the couple, and they're rooting for you to succeed. So, take a deep breath, smile, and speak from the heart.

Do's and Don'ts of Best Friend Wedding Speeches

When crafting and delivering a best friend wedding speech, there are certain practices you should follow and others you should avoid. These do's and don'ts can guide you in creating a speech that is memorable, appropriate, and heartfelt.

  • Do start with a captivating opening to grab the audience's attention.
  • Do share a brief introduction of yourself and your relationship with the bride/groom.

Amazing Tips & Themes For Your Magical Wedding

The Ultimate Guide to Crafting a Heartfelt Wedding Speech for a Friend

If you’ve agreed to give a speech at your best friend’s wedding, it can be intimidating to know how to approach it. You want to ensure your friend loves it while entertaining the wedding guests. So, how can you make the perfect wedding speech for your friend?

In this article, I’ll explore these and other tips to help you write a wonderful wedding speech for your best friend’s big day so that the wedding guests and, most importantly, your best friend will remember it for all the right reasons .

1. Start With a Short Introduction

Tailor your introduction to the type of speech that you’re giving. For example, if your speech is humorous, you could introduce yourself in a humorous way by saying, “I’m the bride’s bestie and the married couple’s new third wheel!”

Once you’ve introduced yourself, so everyone knows who you are, you can launch into your speech. It can be useful to think about the person who delivered a speech before you , as this can give you a good opening into your speech. You could also just thank them for their speech.

Remember, you don’t want to take up too much time talking about yourself and how you know the couple. The bulk of the wedding speech needs to be about them.

2. Use Personal Memories

For example, “Beth and I have known each other since middle school. As her best friend, I’ve always been her shoulder to cry on when she’s experienced heartbreak. Seeing her and Matthew start a relationship, get engaged, and get married, I know the only tears she’ll splatter on my shoulder are happy tears.”

If you haven’t been friends for many years, you could talk about the experience of helping your friend during their wedding preparations and the funny or sentimental memories that were made along the way.

3. Avoid Oversharing

While it’s good to include shared memories in your best friend’s speech, it’s never a good idea to overshare by including memories that are embarrassing for your friend. For example, you shouldn’t include anything your friend told you in private, as you don’t want to expose them on their wedding day!

If you’re not sure if you should include a story that you and your best friend share, it’s a must to first run it past someone else to get their objective opinion. You can read your speech to a mutual friend to gauge their reaction. If they look horrified or like they’re cringing at any point, you should take note and make adjustments to your speech, so you don’t offend anyone.

4. Choose the Style

There are many tones you can adopt when writing a wedding speech, such as:

It’s better to choose a style that matches your personality so that you can pull off the wedding speech with confidence.

5. Think About How You Want Your Friend To Feel

When writing a wedding speech for your friend, you shouldn’t just focus on the style that matches your personality but also think about how you want your friend to feel. Do you want them to feel entertained and happy or sentimental? Here are some ideas to consider:

6. Include Your Friend’s Partner

7. keep your wedding speech focused.

To do this, a good tip is to choose between one and three stories that reveal the aspects of the couple you love. Keep the stories succinct so that they don’t become too long. Focus on the main points of the story based on what you’re hoping to achieve from the audience, for example, if you want them to feel nostalgic or have a good laugh.

8. Celebrate the Happy Couple

When sharing stories about the couple, it’s always a good idea to feature how the bride and groom came out as the heroes . After all, this is their special day, and you’re there to celebrate them!

9. Keep It Short

No one has ever gone to a wedding and wished the speeches were longer, even if they were highly entertaining. Guests want to spend time socializing, talking, and dancing, so you don’t want to make them feel bogged down by a long speech. Ideally, make your wedding speech no longer than five minutes , or else you risk losing your audience.

However, avoid having the entire speech written down on a sheet of paper, as this will be untidy.

10. Give Them Some Encouragement

While you don’t want to give too much advice to the happy couple, a sentimental touch could be to give them words of encouragement.

11. Consult With Other Speakers

Although your speech will be unique from the speeches delivered by other speakers at the wedding, you don’t want your speech to stick out like a sore thumb or not fit in with the overall sentiment. So, it’s a good idea to get in touch with other people who will be speaking at the wedding so you can see what they’re going to be talking about.

You could even brainstorm with each other, so you don’t share the same stories . And chatting with other people who will be giving wedding speeches will help you ensure your speech isn’t too long or short.

12. Choose Appropriate Humor

Standing up at your best friend’s wedding and giving a speech is the perfect opportunity to celebrate their special day. Some tips to make it a memorable and sentimental speech include:

Oddly enough, My Best Friend’s Wedding is about good people. That includes Jules, who is ultimately just acting irresponsibly in an effort to hang on to her best friend. She doesn’t have a bad personality, as evidenced by the fact that she learns her lesson by the end of the movie. Because no one is completely good or completely bad.

It’s been 25 years since I first sat in the backseat of my parents’ car and watched the conclusion of My Best Friend’s Wedding. We had all made the trip to the drive-in to watch Speed 2: Cruise Control, but I let my gaze stray. One more movie I wanted to see that summer was playing on the drive-in’s fourth screen, and it was a movie with enduring decency starring Julia Roberts.

While I haven’t watched as many Hollywood romantic comedies in the last ten to fifteen years, I used to be a huge fan of that genre in the late 1990s, regardless of how good the films were. (In fact, I was so enamored with them that I saw Picture Perfect a few months later in a largely empty theater, though I think mostly it was because I had a crush on Jennifer Aniston. Suffice to say, due to circumstances beyond my pre-teen control, I was unable to attend My Best Friend’s Wedding that summer, but you better believe I rented it the moment it was released on article at the end of the year.

I recently went back to it, and I’m happy to say that I may now even like it more than I did back then. When I first saw it, I adored Julia Roberts’ cunning performance, the fact that the main character was essentially the villain of the story, swooned over Cameron Diaz’s Kimmy, adored Rupert Everett’s George, and grinned broadly during that scene where George and Michael’s family sing “I Say a Little Prayer” in the restaurant.

THE ETIQUETTE She advises wedding guests, wherever they may be, to follow these rules: a friend or relative should contribute between $100 and $125; a close relative, up to $150; and a distant relative, between $75 and $100. No, Cooper says, you are not expected to bloat the gift if you are wealthy.

You need to establish some rules for gift-giving when you attend as many weddings as Stephanie Wong does. Wong, 32, has attended about six weddings in the past two years while working in marketing for a San Francisco-based book publisher. This year, she plans to attend three more.

Wong’s spending depends entirely on her relationship with the newlyweds, how elaborate the wedding will be, and whether or not she brings a date.

Wong gave the couple $300 when she performed a reading and went alone to the recent wedding of a close friend. She donated $75 and skipped the reception at another wedding in her social circle.

The first words in a speech matter! Thank you so much; it’s a pleasure to be here. Sorry, but this won’t take long. Just a week, day, or ten minutes ago, I was asked to give this speech.

You’ve just been called to the stage; your audience is waiting impatiently for you to speak, and now it’s your turn. Instead of the standard “Um, thanks so much for inviting me here,” how do you begin a speech with strength and confidence?

The fact remains that your audience will evaluate you based on your opening statement. Though harsh, what is said is entirely accurate. Therefore, it’s a good idea to start your speech with assurance and confidence in order to quickly establish a connection with the audience and pique their interest in what you will say next.

It’s not just about the words you use; there are many different ways to begin a speech. Your opening lines are only one aspect of making a good first impression.

How To Write A Perfect Speech For Your Best Friend’s Wedding

It is a great honor for a friend to ask you to make a speech at his wedding. What they are saying is that they trust you to make the moment memorable. Here are professional writers for hire to help you make the speech unforgettable.

best friend speech write

Whether you are writing the speech or have hired a professional writer, you have to develop the outline. The work of the writer is to present your ideas in an interesting manner to spice the wedding. The writers will give you confidence to make the presentation especially if you are doubtful of writing a good speech.

Here are the best insights on how to write a perfect wedding speech for your friend’s occasion.

Know your friend

Out of the tens of guests invited for the reception, you have the special privilege of speaking. The friend trusts that you know him well enough to capture his words to his guest. Notice that many brides and grooms do not speak. They leave you to talk on their behalf. You must have an idea of what the bride or the groom may want to say on his special occasion.

Being a wedding, you are not going to talk about the latest technology innovations or visit to Mars. Rather, your content will center on the couple. Know what they like, their journey of love, aspiration for the future, and overall personality. It helps you to capture their thoughts in a humorous manner. Specifically, you will avoid giving a generic speech that cannot relate to the friends or their life.

Consider the audience

A wedding reception features a lot of people. There are parents, family members, workmates, former schoolmates, mentors, and mentees, among others. You may even be making your speech in the middle of a church service. Review the guest list before preparing the speech. It will help you to make a befitting presentation.

The audience will dictate the words you use. While you might have a deep relationship with the friend to the point of knowing his personal life, some of the details might not be palatable to the audience. Further, remember that the audience is looking for a memorable moment from your presentation. The speech must, therefore, resonate with their expectations.

Make it personal

Avoid a generic speech. Address your friend based on what you know in his past and expectations of the future. Mention incidents your friend can remember, as long as they are not embarrassing.

A personal speech helps the guests to understand the side of your friend that they may not know. Remember that you were chosen because you are unique and close. Share that experience with the family, colleagues, and friends of the friend. Such incidents ignite dialogues and will be remembered long after the wedding is over.

It’s about the couple

Some friends are only known to one party and not the other. Do not run the risk of focusing on your friend and ignoring his or her spouse. By the time you were chosen, you must know the bond that exists between the two. Dig into their history to find points of intersection. Talk about common things so that one does not feel left out by the other.

best friend speech write

Sometimes it is difficult to know as much about one as you know about the other. Reflect what you know on to his or her partner. For instance, you may say that your man loves dancing, so you should also practice to keep the marriage happy. In such a case, whether you know that the partner can dance or not is irrelevant. You have looped the partner into the dancing life of the man.

Use note cards

The best wedding speeches are not read. They are impromptu. However, you can run out of ideas or fail to deliver a crucial point. Note cards will keep you on track. Write the main points on a card and only refer to the notes when talking and make your improvised speech from these guides.

Do not go into details with the cards. You may leave them with a friend to remember the occasion. Make the speech as lively as possible.

Keep it short and sweet

A wedding reception is not a chance to present an academic paper. You are only allocated a few minutes to pass a message and allow the program to continue. It is not a time to give the life history of the friend or the spouse. Choose a few words that will capture the mood of the day and give your friend something to remember about his marriage.

A wedding speech must end on a high. People should not be compelled to clap. They should clap involuntarily as you leave the podium. Add a spice of fun to the speech so that you bring down the roof by the time you finish the speech.

Best Friend Maid Of Honor Speech

After years of helping Maids of Honor deliver awesome speeches, founder of Speechy and author of ‘The Modern Couple’s Guide to Wedding Speeches’, Heidi Ellert-McDermott, shares her tips. The first three-fifths of the speech should include revealing, entertaining stories that give an insight into the bride and your relationship with her. Don’t be shy of some affectionate teasing.

We’ve made a research and after surveying over 50,000 brides, the maid of honor choice was crystal clear: more than 51% of them chose their best friend as their maid of honor. This role isn’t just about tradition—it’s about an unbreakable bond. A best friend’s speech resonates deeply, filled with shared memories and heartfelt wishes.

“If you haven’t had the chance to meet me yet, my name is X. (Bride) and I have been best friends for about 10 years. We met in high school gym class, and we couldn’t stand each other at first. As you can see, things eventually changed for the better. When (Bride) first asked me to be her Maid of Honor I felt flattered. But as the big day approached, she also told me to give a speech and a toast. I’m kind of the shy type and tried my best to get out of it. But, as (Groom) can tell you, it’s almost impossible to tell (Bride) No and get away with it. I wanted to tell you both how absolutely spectacular you look today. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a better-looking couple (except for maybe my boyfriend and I). And I hope you’re all having a lovely evening and I’d like to I wish you two all the love and happiness in the world. How blessed you are to celebrate your love on this beautiful day. I know there are many happy years ahead for you. Let’s all raise our glasses to the bride and groom, and wish them a lifetime of love and happiness!”
“I never had a sister, but (Bride) has been like a sister to me for all these years. We have similar tastes, we like similar clothes… I knew (Bride) had found the one when (Groom) walked into her life. Well, I’m fine with that – she saw him first! Actually, you could see that it was love at first, second, and third sight. He is her Prince Charming and it seems to me he gives her all she needs – a strong arm, a sympathetic ear, and his credit card.”
“I met (Bride) 6 years ago, as we tried to survive in the concrete jungle of NY. To thrive there, your tribe is essential. We are quite protective of each other, so I was a bit skeptical of (Groom) when he first came into the picture. But as time goes by, I can’t imagine anyone else but him to be her one and only. They say that anyone can be passionate, but it takes a real pair of lovers to be silly. Well, together, (Bride) and (Groom) are two of the goofiest people I know.”
“Hello everyone, my name is X, and by my dress, you can tell that I am the Maid of Honor today. For many years, we have been through thick and thin, and we have shared many memories. Today is another great day to add to our collection of sweet memories, so I’m really looking forward to the cake! I know you will have challenges as all relationships do. But you know what’s great about love and relationships and marriages? It is learning to grow together. Caring and sharing, and lots of tenderness. And maybe a bit of patience, or maybe even a lot. So let’s raise our glasses to the power of love, that makes all these wonderful things happen! Today you start a completely new chapter of your lives. What can I say? Never forget the two most important replies: ‘you’re right, dear’ and ‘okay, buy it’. Love and cherish each other! These two are a rare find in today’s world. Here’s to the groom who has a bride so fair, and here’s to the bride with a groom who is so rare.”

The 60+ Best Engagement Gifts Any Couple Will Love

Sister maid of honor speech.

According to our research, the second most popular choice for the maid of honor role is the bride’s sister. While tradition often places the best friend in the spotlight, a sister brings a unique depth to the role. Their shared history, growing up together, and the intrinsic bond make a sister’s speech incredibly touching. With a wealth of childhood memories and a deep understanding of the bride, a sister’s words carry immense emotional weight. When delivering the speech, draw upon this shared journey, express genuine emotions, and celebrate the love that binds not only siblings but also the newlyweds.

“As you may know, I am the bride’s younger sister. As we were growing up, I always wanted to be like her. Do the things she did, have the things she had –  I was probably a bit annoying, I always wanted to tag along. She taught me how to care, how to share, and how to try to reach for the stars. And as I grew up I wanted to be just as beautiful, caring, smart, and successful as her. (Bride) has always set an example for me to follow. Over the years she has shown me how to love and care. Today she shows me how to find a best friend, a partner, and a true lover, all in one person. I hope that I am just as lucky someday. It’s a great happiness to find someone who loves you as much as (Groom) loves my sister. Today, I want to thank both of you for being a part of my life, and to celebrate the love you both share. Like many sisters, we weren’t always best friends. I remember fights, screaming, and door-slamming, but I couldn’t have picked a better sister and a friend. Now that we are older, I can finally admit how happy I am to have grown up with such a great sister. Having a sister is one of the greatest things in life. Having a little sister is even better because I liked to be bossy. (Bride) always wanted to be a bit more like me… But actually, there is so much that I admire about her! I have watched her grow into the gorgeous woman that she is. It is a great honor for me to be her big sister!”
“First of all, I want to thank you all for being here with us today. As most of you know I am (Bride’s) sister. As we grew, we were as close as can be. We were always in trouble and I remember wondering if there will be a guy brave enough for someone as wild as my sister is. Well, here he is!My sis has just tied the knot. And I do believe that (Groom) is her perfect match. And today I realize that all she needs is a guy who will love her just the way she is, with all her craziness. Their commitment to each other inspires all of us because that’s what we call true love. So let’s raise our glasses to this amazing couple!”
“I want you to know that it took me 3 weeks to write this speech over and over again. And I couldn’t think of anything perfect enough to describe just how much I love you. I couldn’t find words to define the kind of sister you are to me. This is your big day and there is so much I want to say… I Googled a lot of maid of honor speech examples. The one piece of advice I kept finding over and over again was to start off with a quote. I did some research and I think their love is best described by Dr. Seuss: “You know you’re in love when you can’t fall asleep because the reality is finally better than your dreams.”
“Love, be true to her; Life, be dear to her; Health, stay close to her; Joy, draw near to her; Fortune, find what you can do for her, Search your treasure house through and through for her, Follow her footsteps the wide world over – And keep her husband always her lover. – By Anna Lewis, from “To the Bride”

Funny Maid Of Honor Speech

As a close friend of the bride, you would have a lot of material for wedding speeches bridesmaids, you just need to know how to put them all together. A few sample wedding speeches would give you the right kind of inspiration to get you on your way.

“Well, for those of you who I haven’t had the chance to meet yet, my name is [NAME]. [BRIDE] and I have been best friends for around the last 10 years. We first met at work one day, when she stole my carrot cake out of the fridge in the lunchroom and I threw away her pineapple yogurt cartons in revenge. I never had a sister, but [BRIDE] has been my stand-in sister for all these years. You could say we are even closer than sisters. We don’t fight like sisters, but we do wear each other’s clothes. Somehow she can still fit into my clothes but I can’t fit into hers anymore. I’m sure that is just because her dryer must be shrinking them. I knew [BRIDE] had found the one when [GROOM] walked into her life. Sure, she dated a few guys…after I was done torturing them. But [GROOM] was different. Unlike those jerks, he was kind and thoughtful. And he had a job. You could see that it was love at first, second, and third sight. Clearly [GROOM] is charming and it seems to me he offers her what she needs – a strong arm, a kind ear, and an American Express Black Card. I trust [BRIDE] and [GROOM] completely. I remember the time I asked them to watch my dog Benji when I went skiing in Europe. They were so nice to help out. I got back and Benji was so happy to see me. He was 40 pounds lighter and now he sees a therapist twice a week. Of course, we are having fun today. The test of this relationship will be over the long term. Will she still love [GROOM] when he leaves his underwear on the floor and cuts his toenails at the dinner table? The answer is no. God, please, disgusting. No, seriously, I know they will have challenges as all relationships do. And [GROOM] will learn what all men learn eventually. Keep your wife happy! Happy wife, happy life. No, really, what’s great about love and relationships and marriage is learning to grow together. The communication it takes to keep a marriage going is massive. But half the fun is working things out, talking, communicating, and launching kitchen appliances at each other – real love. Today has been a great day. Family and friends are here, the sun is shining and the champagne is flowing. And we’ll need it to get through this chicken dinner.”

How To Write The Best Maid Of Honor Speech Ever

We’ve all seen when speeches go wrong, so how you do you get it right? After years of helping Maids of Honor deliver awesome speeches, founder of Speechy , Heidi Ellert-McDermott, shares her tips.

  • Introduce yourself & explain how you know the bride.
  • Include humor throughout. Yes, your speech should be a loving tribute to a true friend, but it’s also meant to entertain a crowd.
  • Once you’ve written your speech, try to edit it in half. Promise, your speech will be better the punchier it is. No one ever wished a speech was longer!
  • Pay tribute to the bride’s partner with than a cursory platitude. Prove you genuinely know and like them!
  • Rehearse as often as you can but use notes on the day. Delivering the speech shouldn’t be a memory test.
  • Remember to smile throughout your delivery. It’s a powerful (and infectious) communication tool.

Don’t

  • Resort to cheesy cliches about love and friendship.
  • Google gags.
  • Thank anyone. It’s not your job.
  • Take up more than 10 mins mic time.
  • Pretend the bride is perfect. Instead cherish the crazy character she truly is, with all her quirks and eccentricities.
  • Talk over laughter when you deliver your speech. If you’ve written a funny line, leave a pause after you’ve said it to allow your audience to get the joke and respond. Don’t start talking till the last giggle has died down.
  • Drink more than a glass of bubbles prior to your speech. Alcohol actually increases the stress hormone.

How to Get Started Maid of Honor Wedding Speech

  • Know Your Audience: Consider the bride and groom’s personalities, the formality of the event, and the sensibilities of the guests. Tailor your speech to the audience.
  • Start Early: Begin writing your speech well in advance. This allows time for revisions and practice. Don’t wait until the last minute.
  • Personalize It: Share anecdotes and stories that reflect your relationship with the bride. Highlight special moments and inside jokes.

Examples of How to Get Started:

  • Opening with a Quote: Start with an inspiring or humorous quote related to love or marriage. For instance,

“Maya Angelou once said, ‘Love recognizes no barriers.’ Today, we’re here to celebrate a love that knows no bounds.”

  • Anecdotal Introduction: Begin with a personal story about your friendship with the bride.

“As I stand here today, I can’t help but think back to the time we met in kindergarten. Who would’ve thought that our friendship would lead us to this beautiful wedding?”

  • Express Your Gratitude: Begin by expressing your gratitude for being chosen as the maid of honor.

“First and foremost, I want to thank [bride’s name] for giving me the honor of standing by her side today as her maid of honor.” Remember, the key to a memorable maid of honor speech is sincerity and a touch of humor, sprinkled with personal anecdotes that capture the essence of your relationship with the bride.

How To End A Maid Of Honor Speech

When figuring out how to write a maid of honor speech, keep in mind that the latter part of the speech should be where you talk about the couple. In that vein, it’s also important to know how to end the speech flawlessly. Here are a few tips.

  • Keep it short and sweet. While you might have a lot to say, there are time slots for each speech, so keeping things short would be best.
  • Use sentimental wedding quotes. You might have a maid of honor speech template you follow but adding inspirational quotes to your speech is a great way to wrap things up.
  • Finish with a toast. At the very end, it is customary to raise a toast to the happy couple.

10 Maid Of Honor Speech Tips

After years of helping Maids of Honor deliver awesome speeches, founder of Speechy and author of ‘The Modern Couple’s Guide to Wedding Speeches’, Heidi Ellert-McDermott, shares her tips.

Planning Your Speech

  • Think of the speechwriting process as writing a dissertation (only this time, don’t leave it till the night before your deadline!).
  • Firstly, jot down all your ideas and favourite stories and then construct a central idea (narrative theme) that you stick to through. It could be that your friend is always right, or maybe the newlyweds prove that opposites really do attract. Whatever it is, make sure your speech flows from one idea to the next, rather than being a list of random thoughts.

Speech Structure

  • Remember to introduce yourself and how you know the bride at the start of the speech and try to include humor within the first 30 seconds. Resist the urge to include any of those tired googled-wedding-gags and ensure your line is original and relates to the couple themselves or the surroundings you find yourself in.
  • The first three-fifths of the speech should include revealing, entertaining stories that give an insight into the bride and your relationship with her. Don’t be shy of some affectionate teasing.
  • Towards the latter half of the speech, introduce her partner and explain why the couple are suited. Again, make sure to include some good-natured humour here.
  • The final fifth of your speech could be a full-on love-bomb of a tribute to your friend. Make sure you avoid the usual cliches and platitudes about friendship and instead, try to nail the bride’s individual characteristics and quirks that make you love her.

Edit Your Speech

  • When you’ve finished writing your speech, try to edit it in half. You may not achieve it but once you get editing, you’ll be surprised by the amount of needless waffle that’s in there.
  • Remember, a speech is better punchy, so be brutal. A good maid of honour speech is generally between 700 and 1,100 words. No more than 10 minutes airtime!

Choosing Quotes for a Memorable Maid of Honor Speech

Talking about love and trying to sum up a friendship, can be hard. Luckily, some other clever people have already done it and we can all exploit their genius! Whilst plagiarism isn’t ever cool, finding the perfect quote to supercharge your speech is a great idea. Founder of Speechy (the bespoke speechwriting service), Heidi Ellert-McDermott, shares her tips for hunting the perfect quote to honour your bestie.

How to Use Quotes

  • Don’t resort to a generic ‘marriage advice’ quote. They’re over-used.
  • Don’t overload your speech with quotes. One, maximum two.
  • Quote recognisable names – or at least provide some context. Don’t quote someone you need to Google or someone who’s a random ‘relationship coach’.
  • Once you add the perfect quote to your speech, script a comedy back ref or put it into the context of the couple’s real-life relationship.
  • Remember, quotes can be used to add the necessary humor, as well as the sentiment.

Where to Find Quotes

  • Don’t just search for ‘wedding quotes’ on Pinterest.
  • Quotes become more meaningful if they come from somewhere that means something to the couple. Could the quote come from the bride’s favourite book, her partner’s favourite film, or maybe it’s from that song you play when you’ve both had a few too many dirty martinis.
  • Quotes can be found everywhere from children’s books to rom-coms, from hip-hop classics to the great philosophers, from historical icons to classic sitcoms so enjoy the search!

How To Write A Killer Best Man Speech (With Templates)

A funny, heartfelt speech from the best man is one of the most memorable parts of a wedding. Here’s how to give a great toast (without embarrassing yourself).

Subscribe to our weekly newsletter

A best man speech is the perfect way to send your brother or friend the best wishes in their marriage, but standing up in front of the crowd can be super nerve-wracking. If you’ve been invited to be the best man at a wedding but have no idea what to say in your speech, you’re not alone!

Over 75% of the population cites public speaking as one of their biggest fears. Thankfully, it’s a people skill that anyone can develop. A great event toast can be a game-changer and make you feel like a celebrity amongst the wedding guests.

Watch our video to learn the best (and worst) speech openers:

Here’s how to overcome your public speaking anxiety and give a knockout best man speech that will incite laughter, smiles, or even sentimental tears.

Quick Answer: How to Write a Best Man Speech Fast (with Template!)

A killer best man toast has a formula:

  • Start with a funny or complimentary introduction
  • Lead into a short story
  • Add a dash of vulnerability
  • End with genuine congratulations to the bride and groom.

You won’t want to wing the speech after you’ve had a few drinks when you feel strapped for time before the wedding. Instead, take just 30 minutes of planning and note-making to save you (and the bride & groom) the embarrassment of an excessively long or inappropriate ramble.

If you want to write a best man speech fast, follow this brief template for a great toast. Your toast should be roughly 3 to 5 minutes long. You can use numbered index cards to jot down the highlights of each section. Then, rehearse a few times in the mirror in the days leading up to the event.

The most straightforward speech outline includes seven main components:

  • A great one-liner : This could be a funny joke, a compliment, or an inspirational quote about brotherhood or marriage. The first 15 seconds of the toast should capture the audience’s attention and leave them excited for more. Modify this:

“I’d like to begin by congratulating the groom for his superb taste in choosing the best man [chuckle].”

  • Compliment the wedding : Build your respect with the guests by highlighting things you like about the wedding. For example, you can compliment the beauty of the venue, the delicious food, or the great choice of music. Modify this:

“All jokes aside, this is a beautiful wedding. The bride and groom look like a movie star couple together. And if you didn’t taste the cake, you are missing out!”

  • Express gratitude : Say “thank you” to those who made the wedding possible and show appreciation to the groom for choosing you as his best man. Modify this:

“I am so grateful to Mr. and Mrs. Zimerman for hosting us here today, and thank you to the bride and groom for inviting me to be part of their special day.”

  • Tell a story : Did you and the groom meet as kids on the baseball field? Were you there when he first met his bride? Did you share a funny experience in college that is appropriate to share? The “meat” of the speech will be a short story about your relationship with the groom. A great story sounds like this:

“When I first met Jeff, he was in a period of transition in life, like we all go through. He had just started a new job at my office in San Francisco, and we met because of our mutual addiction to double shot espressos (iced with a little cream) at 6 AM every morning from the corner coffee shop Bob’s Cup O’ Joe. When we both arrived at the office at the same time, 3 days in a row with eyes like this [widen eyes big], I knew we would be friends for life. A million espressos, meetings, and after-work beers later, I am so proud to call Jeff my best friend. When he told me about meeting a beautiful blonde named Anne at Bob’s Cup O’ Joe a few years later, I knew something would become of it. She even drank the same double shot espressos, iced with a little cream!”

  • Admire the couple : Strengthen your bond with the newlyweds by expressing your support for their marriage. If you know a bit about the bride and groom’s relationship, list a few things you admire about their bond. You may emphasize how the bride has positively impacted the groom’s life or how they make a great team.

“Jeff and Anne are a perfect pair, and it seriously warms my heart to see a couple so amazingly in love. They compliment each other in every way and radiate joy when they are together.”

  • Summarize your thoughts : Before you wrap up your speech, go back and highlight your key ideas. You can pre-write 2-3 crisp sentences summarizing your support of the couple’s marriage. Modify this:

“I wish I could say I predicted this day would come, but Jeff’s incredible character and charm won Anne over. I am so grateful to be friends with both of them and to join you all in this celebration.”

  • Toast to the future : At the end of your speech, raise your glass for a toast to the couple’s love. Modify this:

“Please join me in raising our glasses to a lifetime of happiness and espressos for Jeff and Anne Allison!”

Here is an awesome example of a short and sweet 4-minute toast that left the crowd cracking up:

It’s best to memorize your speech, but there is no shame in bringing a few index cards in your pocket to reference if you get nervous. Don’t forget to prepare and rehearse in advance.

For a more in-depth speech, see our step-by-step guide below.

What to Say in a Best Man Speech (Do’s and Don’ts)

A best man’s speech traditionally takes place at the wedding reception after the maid of honor gives her speech. The best man’s speech should be positive, respectful, and congratulatory. It can last 3 to 5 minutes and should focus on a central theme or story about the groom.

Remember, a best man speech is not the time to “wing it.” If you do that, there may come the point when everything suddenly goes silent, and a crowd of 50-100+ people is staring at you, waiting for what you’re going to say about the groom. You probably don’t want to end up with a cringing audience while telling a story about the groom’s previous relationships:

Instead, remember these key best man speech tips for a successful toast:

Pre-plan your speech with a layout and index cardsDon’t wing it or try to go on the fly
Keep your speech 3-5 minutes longDon’t give an excessively short or long speech
Open with a catchy one-liner or jokeDon’t start with a dull or droning tone
Tell a short story about the groomDon’t make it about you
Use fun, family-friendly humorAvoid risky or inappropriate topics and jokes
Use deep breathing to calm your nerves before the speech Don’t drink too much
Congratulate the groom Don’t ignore the bride
Compliment the brideInsult or tease the bride (I know it may be tempting, but it NEVER goes over well)
Read the room and get to know the guestsDon’t use profanity (unless it’s acceptable in the family)

Here are a few examples of what you should say in a best man speech:

  • How did you meet the groom?
  • What is one of your favorite memories with him?
  • How did the groom meet the bride? Were you there?
  • What is special about the groom?
  • What do you like most about him?
  • What are his positive traits?
  • Playful banter : You don’t want to be too corny and cheesy with your bro. Depending on your relationship with the groom and the culture of the wedding, you may want to throw in a little banter with your dude. For example, you might make a funny joke about how much the groom loves going out to eat:

You should also avoid some key topics in a best man speech.

Do not mention:

  • The groom’s past relationships
  • Sexual jokes
  • Drugs, alcohol, or past mistakes
  • Insecurities of the groom
  • Financial or personal information
  • Insults to the bride or the wedding guests
  • Overly embarrassing stories
  • Teasing the bride
  • Anything that could potentially harm your friendship

Keep things positive and lighthearted. While a little witty banter or playful teasing can be fun (depending on your relationship with the groom), you should avoid insulting him or highlighting any major insecurities. The “playful” part of the speech is an excellent fun icebreaker, but it shouldn’t hurt anyone’s feelings or make them feel publicly embarrassed in front of their wedding guests.

How to Write a Best Man Speech for Best Friend or Brother: Easy Step-by-Step Guide

If you’re ready to prepare something more in-depth than the quick ideas above, this step-by-step guide can help you write a thoughtful speech that the groom may remember forever. After all, being named the best man at your friend or brother’s wedding is a tremendous honor. But like any honor, it comes with some responsibilities. After you finish all your bachelor party and wedding duties, an epic best man speech can be like the fireworks at the show’s end.

Here are 5 simple steps to make it count:

#1 Start with a theme

Before you start writing and rehearsing your speech, it helps to decide on a theme for your talk. This will give a nice flow to the speech. A theme ensures that you stay on track to communicate your congratulations and appreciation to the groom.

What is the main message you want to get across? A few theme ideas include:

  • Anecdotes : Best man toasts center around storytelling. This theme is the easiest way to stay on track because you are telling a simple story from beginning to end.
  • Humor : Whether you’re naturally funny or working on your jokes ,  your speech is the perfect opportunity to get the audience laughing. Best man speeches are known for getting a little saucy, but you must be careful about offending the crowd or making crude jokes that might insult the bride and groom. If you want to tease the groom with some witty banter, it helps to make fun of yourself or reference an appropriate inside joke.
  • Inspirational : Have you and the groom achieved an important business goal or accomplishment together? Do you have a shared role model or favorite motivational book you both read in college? This speech theme can leave the audience feeling inspired.
  • Morality : Use your speech to highlight the great person the groom is. Perhaps you give examples of his integrity, trustworthiness, or generosity. You can emphasize how lucky you are to know the groom and how glad you are that he found a woman to spend his life with.
  • Sentimentality : When humor and storytelling aren’t your fortes, it doesn’t hurt to get a little corny. Sentimental speeches require a level of emotional vulnerability, but they can leave a huge impact on the newlyweds and their attendees.

#2 Create an outline

You wouldn’t go on a road trip without a navigation system, so don’t go into your speech without a plan. The best toasts and speeches follow the same structure. Pull out a piece of paper and brainstorm some ideas using this format, then use the following steps to fill in the details:

  • Hook/Opening statement : The opening statement should be a 1 to 3-line description about the groom. The first 7 seconds of the speech should hook the audience immediately. It warms them up to you and makes them want to pay attention to the amusing stories. You’ll find an abundance of opening-line ideas in the next section.
  • Background context : Now comes the why of your speech. This is where the context of your relationship with the groom comes in. You can throw in some funny jokes and a few details about your experience with him. Use this intro to build up the anticipation for the story to come. Write down a few ideas of stories you can tell.
  • Tell the story : Choose 1-3 short stories about the groom that is funny, slightly embarrassing, or interesting. Jot down a few of the sensory elements you want to reference, like the smelly locker room or the squeaking of tire wheels. Most stories follow a bell-curve pattern—they start with an intro, lead to rising action, peak with a capstone moment, then tie back to the beginning. Keep this in mind as you brainstorm and follow the story-planning steps below.
  • Take-home message : After you get a good laugh or “awww” out of the audience, you’ll want to bring the story back to the beginning. What do you want them to remember about your speech and friendship with the groom?
  • Thank the wedding party : Use a quick sentence to thank the wedding party and hosts. Express your genuine gratitude for being invited.
  • Closing toast and congratulations : After wrapping up the story and thanking the wedding party, you should invite the audience to toast the bride and groom with you. For an extra cheery finale, act as if you are speaking on their behalf and include lots of well-wishes for the newlyweds.

Pro Tip : Before filling in your outline details, watch this video for an overview of how to give a memorable toast. Human behavior expert Vanessa Van Edwards explains the most common mistakes (don’t start with “I,” “me,” or “my”) and a few secrets to getting the audience to perk up in their seats.

#3 Nail the opening line

Once you have your outline, it’s time to dig into the details. People decide their first impression of you within 7 seconds, so it’s extra important to nail the opening line of your speech. Best men use this opportunity to crack a joke, compliment the wedding, or set a sentimental tone for the speech.

Avoid making the first lines about you. No “me”, “I”, or “my”. Instead, start with a juicy or mysterious line about the groom, for example:

I was the groom’s roommate in college.Ben was the self-proclaimed organization king in college. As his roommate, I feared leaving a pen on the desk.
I am the groom’s younger brother. As a kid, the groom was so excited to have a younger brother that he quickly crowned me as his servant for the next 10 years.
My favorite thing about the groom is his…Tonight you’ll learn why the groom was always…
My favorite story about the groom was…The best story I have about the groom starts with a greasy cheeseburger and a speeding ticket.

If you need a little inspiration, here are some hilarious and quirky best man speech opening lines:

  • “Caring, loyal, honest, good-looking, and an all-around-great guy… OK, enough about me, onto the groom…!”
  • “This is the perfect chance to tell you about [Groom] and how talented, special, smart, good-looking, and… sorry, man, I can’t read your handwriting here.”
  • “I’d like to give a toast to the bride and groom.” [pull a piece of toasted bread from your pocket and give it to them]
  • “[Groom’s name] is the kind of person you call when you lock yourself out of the dorm bathroom without any clothes on.”
  • “The bride and groom asked me not to share embarrassing stories or crude jokes during my speech… so that’s it from me! Thanks for listening, everyone.”
  • “I’d like to start by congratulating the groom for his excellent taste in choosing the best man.”
  • “[Groom] had a tough time choosing his best man. First, he called his most handsome friend, but he said no. Then, he called his smartest friend, and he said no. Then, he called his most successful friend, who also said no. Then he called me, and I said, ‘Bro, I can’t say no to you four times.'”
  • “What can I say about [Groom]? I guess I’ll start at the very beginning. He was born on [groom’s birthday]. Our parents were hoping for a girl, but I’ve always said… close enough.”

Here is a genuinely funny opening line from a best brother wedding speech:

Pro Tip : Don’t forget to pause for laughter. If it doesn’t come, you can chuckle at yourself and cue the audience that they are supposed to laugh by saying, “This is where you are supposed to laugh,” or joking, “Sound guy, can you please cue the laugh track?” Then, keep going with your speech.

Don’t worry. You need not be a jokester to give a great opening line. If you want to go the nostalgic or tearjerker route, be sure it is highly personalized and thoughtful. Here are some sentimental opening line ideas:

  • “There are friends, and there is family, but friends also become family. This is so true for [Groom] and me. We’ve been best friends since we were X years old, and I’ve always considered him my brother.”
  • “There’s an old Irish proverb that says a good friend is like a four-leaf clover—hard to find and lucky to have. I think that’s true. Good friends are hard to find, and I’m lucky to have called [Groom] my best friend for the last X years.”
  • “I’ve heard that the best relationships come from the foundation of a deep friendship. Experts say that laughter, mutual respect, and enjoying each other’s company are the ingredients for a long-lasting, joyful marriage. After knowing [Groom] and [Bride] for X years, there is no doubt in my mind that they will make a great pair.”
  • “In Good Will Hunting , Robin Williams said, ‘It doesn’t matter if the guy is perfect or the girl is perfect as long as they are perfect for each other.” Anyone who has seen [Groom] and [Bride] together can agree that this is true for them. I haven’t seen a perfect pair, and I’m happy to be part of this celebration of their love.”

#4 Background context

Now that you’ve grabbed the audience’s attention, it’s time to give them a little background on why you are giving a speech in the first place. This is another sneak peek at some details you’ll cover in the speech.

The whole point of this part is to tell them how you know the groom—but it isn’t about you. You’ll often hear wedding speeches that start with a drab, “I met the groom in college” or, “My name is ___, and I’m the best man.” You can do better than that! Try saying:

  • “The groom was the first friend I made on the high school football team. I had no idea we would become roommates in a bachelor pad throughout college.”
  • “As little kids, the groom and I were known to be a dangerous duo in the neighborhood. He always carried the eggs and toilet paper, then instructed me where to throw them. But you can guess who always took the blame for his antics….”
  • “The groom and I have been friends and business partners for X years, and as you’ll hear shortly, he is the main reason I broke my arm during the last office basketball game. But first, I want to tell you a less embarrassing story….”

Pro Tip : Focus on the groom, and don’t make it about you. One of the biggest mistakes people make during wedding speeches is talking too much about themselves. Your speech shouldn’t discuss where you’re from, what you think, or how you ended up at the party. The best man’s speech is a time to focus on the groom and his bride.

#5 Tell the story

After your punchy opening line and background info, it’s time to tell the perfect story about the groom. Depending on the length of your speech and the details of your story, some best man speeches cover 1 to 3 short stories.

Reference back to the memories you wrote when brainstorming. Pick a story that includes the most of these captivating elements:

  • A little bit of embarrassment : Whether it’s you, the groom, or a mutual friend, it helps to poke some fun at someone in the story. If you fear being offensive, the best person to joke about is yourself.
  • Audience member references : You can get major bonus points if you bring wedding guests into the storytelling moment. You might say, “Mom, you might want to close your ears on this one!” or, “Brian, we’re talking about you!”
  • Sensory details : What did the scenery look like? What were the prominent smells, sounds, and tastes at the moment? A great story should make the audience feel like they were with you. Don’t forget to mention the frigid cold lake you jumped into or the outrageously spicy food that left you both panting and crying for water.
  • A final punch line : Ideally, the best story ends with a shocking moment or funny line. It should leave the audience laughing, crying, surprised, or even gasping. For example, in an epic adventure story about you and the groom on a hunting trip, you may end with, “Just as the shark was about to bite the line, Joe reeled in the massive bluefin and yelled, ‘I think we’re gonna need a bigger boat!’”

Pro Tip : If you have to ask, “Is this appropriate?” it probably isn’t. Some stories are better for late-night beers than they are for weddings. Avoid telling stories related to sexual topics, drugs, alcohol, illegal activities, or anything you wouldn’t want grandma to hear.

#6 Take-home message

When the story finishes, you’ve hopefully elicited some laughter or maybe some tears. All jokes aside, there is a reason you were the best man, and you are probably a significant person to the groom. This is a great time to emphasize the best qualities of the groom and why you’re so happy for his new love.

Here is an excellent example of tying together the opening and closing lines with a heartfelt message about finding the perfect soul mate:

#7 End your speech with a heartfelt toast

We’ve all heard “let’s raise a glass to [Bride] and [Groom]” before. You can do better than that! The final toast is like the fireworks at the end of your best man speech. Instead of something mediocre, invite the audience to join you in a genuine, thoughtful congratulations. Examples include:

  • “Please join me in raising our glasses to the beautiful bride and handsome groom. May your lives together be long, healthy, and happy. We love you so much and are excited for you. Cheers!”
  • “Lift your glasses to thank Mr. and Mrs. [Bride’s Parents] for hosting this beautiful wedding. Let us all toast to the perfect union of the bride and groom. We wish you a bright and beautiful future. Cheers!”
  • “Here’s to the past, for all you’ve learned. Here’s to the present for this beautiful moment we all share. Here’s to the future for all you’ve got to look forward to. Cheers to the happy couple!”

Pro Tip : Make your toast inclusive and communal, so the audience feels like they’re cheering for the couple with you. Use words like “we”, “lets”, and “us”. This congratulation invites them to join as if you are speaking on their behalf.

#8 Use a best man speech template

A template makes things simple if you’re still feeling uneasy about writing your best man speech. You can take the structure of an example speech and incorporate your ideas and stories to make it your own.

Best man speech example for a best friend :

“Tonight, you’ll learn why the groom was destined to marry [Bride]. The year was 2002, and we were all in a bar with friends on New Year’s Eve in New York City. Snow was falling outside, and we were sipping champagne, waiting for the big ball to drop. Seemingly out of nowhere, a woman with a red dress entered the room, and everything seemed to stop. All the bachelors in our group were captivated, but only [Groom] had the guts to walk up to her. Rumor has it that his first opening line was ‘

Everyone talks about a woman’s glow when she’s falling in love, but I swear that [Groom] was smiling from ear to ear from the second they met. We could hardly get him to stop talking about her by the following week. We’d be watching football and drinking beers only to have [Bride’s] name brought up every 5 minutes.

Fast forward 3 years, and we’ve all seen how much [Bride] has positively impacted his life. When he came to me to tell me he was proposing, my only response was, ‘ Finally, dude !’

There’s something extra special about these two. They go together like peanut butter and jelly. They love and respect each other so much. [Bride] was the one for [Groom] from the second they locked eyes in that hazy NYC bar. We are all so happy to be here for your big day. Let’s raise our glasses to the beautiful bride and groom! Cheers!”

Another Best man speech example for a best friend :

“The groom was the first friend I made on the high school basketball team. He wasn’t very good [pause for laughter]. I was the tallest player and obviously had the best free throw, but I was majorly lacking in the ladies department. Thankfully, [Groom] took me under his wing and showed me how to be a true gentleman. That includes opening doors for women and carrying their bags instead of just running in with my own. What would I have done without you, man?

Even though he was no good at basketball, [Groom] always had his head on his shoulders. He’s a respectful, intelligent, and relatively clean-cut guy. All joking aside, it’s no surprise that he ended up with a woman as intelligent and beautiful as [Bride]. You both deserve a lifetime of love, happiness, and success together. Please raise your glasses and join me in congratulating the bride and groom! We love you!”

#9 Practice your body language

Public speaking isn’t only about what you say but how you carry yourself. Your body language can drastically affect your confidence, your delivery, and how the audience perceives you. Use these body language hacks to take your speech to the next level:

  • Signal “friend” : Smile and show your open palms to send the message that you are the audience’s friend. This makes people feel more comfortable with your presence and more likely to listen.
  • Stand up straight : When you look confident, you also feel more confident. Check your posture if your voice is a little shaky before the speech. Roll back your shoulders and tuck your shoulder blades down towards your back. Slightly lift your chest and chin as you speak.
  • Make eye contact: Throughout the speech, you should change your eye contact with different audience members. As you mention specific compliments or thanks, make eye contact with the bride, groom, groomsmen, bridesmaids, and the bride’s father.
  • Genuinely smile : Smiling may seem obvious, but it’s easy to forget when you feel so focused on a perfect delivery. At the same time, you don’t want to look like you’re fake smiling throughout the speech. Use these 9 Simple Tips to Smile Better (in any situation!)
  • Use your hands : It’s easy to let your nerves get the best of you and feel like a “deer in the headlights.” Instead of tucking your hands in your pockets, widen your stance and take up space. Use your hands and gestures while you talk to show that you are comfortable and happy during the speech.

#10 Rehearse before the big day

Experts say you should rehearse a speech 10 times before performing it. Research also shows that people who mentally prepare themselves before a speech by imagining it going well are more likely to perform fluently and easily. So before you get in front of an audience, be sure you’ve gone over your speech at least 10 times, either in your head or out loud. Better yet, practice in the mirror, on camera, or in front of a trusted friend.

It also helps to review the gist of the speech with the groom (without giving away any secret details) to make sure it’s alright with him. A few weeks before the wedding, you may pull him aside and ask, “Hey man, is it OK if I tell the story about ____ in my best man speech? I think it’ll get some good laughs.”

Although this example is long, this best man very clearly rehearsed his speech for a near-perfect performance without any notes:

Key Takeaways: Express Gratitude and Sentimentality in 3-5 Minutes

Ultimately, a best man speech is an opportunity to make your best bro look good in front of all his friends and family. Your speech should demonstrate how much you value your brotherhood or friendship. At the same time, you can enjoy 5 minutes of wedding fame without making things all about you. A great toast can make you a memorable celebrity at the wedding and have people laughing at your

Before jumping up at the reception and speaking off the cuff, remember to:

  • Outline and plan your speech ahead of time. Use notecards if needed.
  • Focus on the groom and his bride. Don’t go on and on about yourself.
  • Nail the opening line with a funny joke, quote, or teaser that leads into a great story.
  • Avoid inappropriate or cringey topics that could embarrass the groom.
  • Express gratitude to the groom and wedding hosts.

A heartfelt Maid of Honor speech example

This example is written from the point of view of a childhood friend: someone who's shared the best and most difficult of times with the bride. The friendship between them is enduring and the speech is sincerely heartfelt: full of personal stories everybody will relate to.

Said aloud, it is approximately 5- 6 minutes long.

Maria's MOH speech at Sonja & Mark's wedding

"Some one very wise, and obviously someone who knew Sonja and Mark said, “Don't marry a person you can live with. Marry somebody you can't live without."

That's what we're witnessing today – the union of two people who belong together. A perfect match!

My name is Maria and I'm delighted to be the Maid of Honor for my very dear friend Sonja.

We've been close friends since we were little girls and, as we are hitting our 30s, it feels like forever. I can scarcely remember life without her.

Sonja and me, we've gone from crayons to perfume together, with stops in between for learning to read and write, ride a bike, play with dolls, dress up, climb trees, scrape our knees... We’ve done our high school homework, got into trouble for staying out late, turned 21 together… And now here we are, all grown up.

A big night these days is a glass of wine, staying in and watching Netflix together.

From the time we were 13 and had to run to escape a mad, snarling, barking dog I knew Sonja was truly there for me. I was slower than her but she did not leave me behind. And she's been there to pick me up ever since.

Two young girls lying on the floor making rings around their eyes with their fingers

Like when I've misplaced my confidence and haven't been able to find it. (Is it under the sofa? No! Behind the kitchen door? No!)

Or when I’ve needed someone to talk to about a personal life situation, for instance, another crappy boyfriend.

Over the years Sonja has been my touchstone, my wise go-to sister, and although there have been times when we have been physically apart that has never been true of our hearts. She is part of my identity, of who I am.

So when she asked me to be her Maid of Honor, the honor was all mine. Naturally I said yes.

Another “yes”, a previous and much more important one, is the reason we're here today.

Mark, that was one you received.

All Sonja's family members and friends, like me, take her best interests to heart. They look out for her, and I know, that like me, they are delighted that you and she have agreed to live your lives together.

Mark, your care, and love of Sonja over the last few years has demonstrated to us all you are indeed the right man, who was in the right place, at the right time. We've seen the good times you've shared together but most importantly we've also witnessed how you handled the tough ones.

You were there to shelter, cherish and nurture her through the period when her Father passed. And I know that meant everything to her. I feel certain not only he but also her brother, Matthew, would willingly give their blessing to your union from up above.

As for me, you definitely had my wholehearted approval when you asked one of my “ boyfriends”, (now very much past tense), aside for a man-to-man chat about respect and loyalty. From that time, I knew I have gained a brother.

In Sonja you have a hard-working, forgiving, loving big-hearted woman. As her friend, her sister, I am grateful you see, appreciate and know that.

I searched for a special gift of wisdom to pass on and found this – a recipe for love and marriage. It makes sense to me, and I hope it does to you too.

"As you walk through life together remember even though you both share many qualities that are very much the same, you are each unique, and it is your differences that helped bring you together.

Give your love openly and honestly. Always respect and accept what the other has to say, even when you do not agree. Take time to enjoy everyday and share together, and remember that each day is a new beginning."

Sonja, I am looking forward to all the celebrations we're going to have together down the years because although we no longer live on the same street, our roots are very deep.

Please make a note that I intend to speak at your 50th anniversary!

Cheers to the newly weds! Best wishes! I love you guys!"

A light hearted Maid of Honor speech example

To be successful this maid of honor speech relies heavily on its delivery.

Along with stories establishing the depth and importance of the relationship between the bride and her Maid of Honor it includes a good natured, gentle 'roast' of the groom.

The MOH has taken it upon herself to poll guests and family members on his suitability for the bride. She is now making the results public.

Although the groom is being teased we know he's respected, admired and loved by those who know the couple well, which includes the person delivering the speech, the bride's best friend.

The speech will take between 5-6 minutes to deliver.

Felicity's MOH speech at Sarah & Sam's wedding

Once in a while, in the middle of an ordinary life, love gives us a fairy tale.

That's what we're celebrating today: a story of true love, a dream come true, the union of two people who belong together.

My name is Felicity and it's my privilege to be Sarah’s Maid of Honor.

Sarah is my Best Friend. I know it's a cliché. However clichés become clichés for a very good reason, because they're true. She's my BFF: Best Friend Forever.

For her I would wear the gaudiest, frothiest taffeta maid of honor dress possible and still smile. Fortunately I don't have to.

Through Sarah I've learned that being a best friend isn't a competition between those who have been in your life the longest.

Neither is it about regular daily contact. Or about talking, Or being under the same sky, in the same city. Or even sharing the same tastes.

But it is definitely about sharing the same heart space.

Two young women laughing together. Text: Sarah is my best friend. I know it's a cliché. However clichés become clichés for a very good reason, because they are true.

Over the years she's been my touchstone, always encouraging me to be the best of myself: a work still in progress. I look forward to checking off the score card with her when we're much, much older.

We've seen each other through all those milestones of growing up: the ones we want to remember, as well as the ones we'd prefer to forget but don't. Amongst them are memories I'll always cherish: going on a bike tour of Paris in the rain, getting completely soaked and laughing about it, gorging ourselves on gastronomic delights in Greece. And ticking off the typical tourist “when in Rome” items: walking up the Spanish Steps and tossing coins in the Trevi fountain together.

Sarah you know, and see me clearly. Just like I know and see you. And today you've changed the course of your life forever with two words: I do.

Sam, you'll have understood by now just how much this woman is loved, not just by me but by all of us here. Inevitably that means when a suitor comes along they have to pass not just one test, but multiple ones.

There's the initial hurdle, getting her on your side. Once that's safely over there's more and these, as anyone married knows, can be quite formidable.

Friends, mothers, fathers, family, don't share quite the same blinkered infatuation. We stand back. We watch, and yes, we judge.

We have a “not-so-little” check list and we want every point on it passed, with honors.

Now I'd done a comprehensive survey of the interested parties and tallied the scores. They read like this.

On the “always has her back “ index you did extremely well. This one was a very important indicator. Knowledge of what it is “to have someone's back” is paramount. You passed with flying colors on the sub-set, “has spine” too.

Availability. The question behind this point had two parts, both equally weighted. Are you there for Sarah when she needs you? We looked at physically, as well as emotionally, present. Again, top marks.

Positive influence. Does this man extend and enhance the best in Sarah?

Now this one was a little trickier. Separating the vested interests and keeping ourselves honest is a challenge when so much is at stake. Change can be confronting even if it is for the better. But yes, we agreed, that Sam definitely brought Sarah more of all that is good. His presence enables her to grow.

Health. Really? Need we go there? Look at them! They eat so well, exercise so well – we're thinking of setting up a charity to donate the excess health they generate to those who need it. These two are the ultimate King and Queen of eating green. Their example inspires!

Our last was “laughter”.  Does this man make this woman smile, make her laugh with joy and share her humor? Sam, no one makes Sarah laugh the way you do.

In conclusion, you are quite simply, the best. We thank you for understanding, valuing and loving her as we do.

I want to acknowledge someone else in the line up looking out for Sarah, someone very dear to her who, although not physically present, is here in our hearts: Betty, Bette, her grandmother. I'm sure she would approve too.

And now a toast. Please raise your glasses.

To Sarah and Sam, and a lifetime of love! May your happily ever after begin here.

Content suggestions for your own MOH speech

Often the hardest part of preparing a speech is getting started.  These prompts will help you find the right words to say about the bride and her new husband on their special day.

Grab a piece of paper and answer the questions as quickly as you can. Let you mind go. Don't stop to edit, to check your spelling or to write full sentences. You can do all of that later.

Focus, for now, on generating ideas.

Maid of Honor speech writing prompts

  • When, and how, did you first meet the bride?
  • When did she become a close friend?
  • What makes her a good person?
  • What 3 or 4 words best describe her character?
  • When did you realize (the groom's name) was the love of her life? What was your first impression of him?
  • What hobbies or interests do they share as a couple?
  • What do you admire about them as a couple? What makes them unique or special?
  • What challenges or hardships have they faced and overcome?
  • What funny moment or funny stories can you share about them?
  • What do you want to say to wish them a happy future together? Is there a quote you'd like to use as a toast? A line from a song? A verse from a poem?

What NOT to put into your speech

Before you go ahead in the writing process check the content you've generated.

Remove any:

  • stories that would embarrass the bride and anyone listening: eg. tales about past relationships, wild nights out, participating in illegal activities of any sort...
  • inside jokes or references that only a few people will understand
  • comments or stories that make yourself the principal focus of attention. The most important people are the bride and groom.
  • references to money or the costs involved in the wedding
  • critical comments about the wedding planning, the people involved with that, and any of the lead up activities
  • language or crudity (for instance, off-color jokes or sexual innuendo) that may offend the wedding guests
  • strings of clichés. For example: she's most beautiful bride in the whole wide world. The groom swept her off her feet. It was true love at first sight and now they will live happily ever after...

Test and rehearse your speech

It's vital to allow enough time to thoroughly test and rehearse your speech before you deliver it: that's about three weeks.

How to test your speech

Testing has two parts.

The first part is making sure the content covers all you think it should and flows easily from one segment to the next. This is where another pair of ears are very useful. Sometimes what we think we're saying and what we actually are is quite different. Get the opinion of someone whose judgment you trust.

The second part is testing your speech for timing. Set a timer and say it out loud at about the pace you would use if you were delivering it for real. Ideally you want it between 3 - 6 minutes long. If it's too long, look for places to cut it.

For more about how many words in a 3 minute, 4 minute, 5 minute, 6 minute...speech and speech rate .

Rehearse your speech

Image: girl wearing angel wings levitating. Text: How to rehearse a speech properly and do so much more than wing it.

Once you have the words sorted, it's time to work on how you'll deliver them.

Delivery makes all the difference between an average, ordinary performance, and an extraordinary one. Please make the time to rehearse.

Trying to 'wing it' without preparation leaves you wide open for all sorts of unnecessary glitches to suddenly pop up and throw you sideways. Don't tempt it! How to rehearse a speech well: 7 steps to brilliance! ☺

Maid of Honor – Examples of Wedding Speeches for Your Best Friend

Maid of Honor Speech Examples

Sample Speech 1

Excuse me, everyone. I’d like to take a few moments to talk to you about my best friend Jennifer and her new husband Mark.

I’ve been Jennifer’s best friend since we were little girls. I remember how we used to play dress-up and dream of the weddings we would have when we were grown up. I’m sure that the wedding that has taken place here today far surpasses the childhood dreams I know Jennifer had about her big day!

Jennifer is one of the most loving, caring and kind people I’ve ever met. She has a fantastic sense of humor and a sharp wit — so look out, Mark! All kidding aside, though, I couldn’t be happier to honor my best friend on her wedding day.

Jennifer and Mark, I wish you all the love and happiness in the world. How blessed you are to celebrate your love on this beautiful day. I know there are many happy years of love and togetherness ahead for you.

Let’s all raise our glasses to Jennifer and Mark, and wish them a lifetime of love and joy!

When Jennifer began dating Mark, I could tell their relationship would be more than just a casual thing. I could tell right away that there was something special there, something that we all want to find for ourselves — true love.

Mark, I know you will love and care for Jennifer for the rest of her life. I couldn’t wish for a better groom for my best friend!

In the spirit of love and unity, let’s toast the bride and groom and wish them all the happiness they deserve!

Certain things happen in a certain way at a certain time and place for a certain reason. They say you don’t get to pick who you’re related to. That’s true. But you do get to pick who your family is. Your real family. And you’ll always be my family. We’re closer than sisters could be, thicker than any thieves. You know all my secrets, all my wild ambitions. You support every one of my craziest fantasies. What would I do without you? I guess I’d have to watch Rent and Titanic on my own, on the couch, with a pint of ice cream and no one to cry with. I’d have to learn to take care of myself. I’d have to dole out my own advice. I’d have to scheme and dream – all on my own.
Romantic relationships are based on expectations and responsibilities. Professional relationships are based on gains and losses. But friendship is based on smiles and laughter. Good morning my friend.
We’re best friends because we can go for long stretches of time without talking and it won’t damage the relationship. We always pick up where we left off. Surfaces changes mean nothing to us. You could become a vegan who goes by Moonshadow and attends Burning Man, and I would still feel closer to you than anyone else. We don’t need common interests in order to connect. We don’t need a mutual love of music or sports or whatever to keep us together.
Thank you first of all for accepting me and loving me for exactly who I am. This isn’t easy. I can be stubborn, difficult and confusing, but you love and accept me for me. There are days I wonder when you’ll finally come to your senses and move on and find a new BFF, one who isn’t so complicated, but to my amazement, you never do. You tell me you’ll take the good with the bad, and when I question whether I have any good left, you’re always there to reassure me and show me that I do. Thank you for loving me in my dorky and difficult moments, moments where if the rest of the world saw them, they’d probably walk away. Thank you for understanding me like no one else does; if we didn’t have the connection we did, I can’t imagine how lonely and big this world would feel. Because of you, this world seems like a little friendlier place, one I can see myself being a part of.
No matter where life takes us, I will always be your best friend. I will be there when you need someone to talk to, whether you’re elated or depressed. I’ll be there when you want company through a long, lonely day. I will be by your side through thick and thin, in sickness and in health because you’re my best friend and I cherish you so much.
Honestly, I can talk about you all day and all through the night, and even now I have a million more things to say. Be that as it may, too many words get to be good for nothing, so I’ll simply end it at “you’re the most magnificent individual I’ve ever met, and I can’t envision not having you in my life.
Even though we don’t see each other every day, I will never stop cherishing our friendship. Even if we don’t hear from each other every time, I will never stop reminiscing about you and the beautiful moment we’ve had together. And even though the sun stops shining and the cloud doesn’t pour down rain on the earth, I will never stop being your sweet friend. I love you beyond the stars, my sweetest friend.

Sweet Paragraphs To Send To Your Best Friend

Every good TV show, every good movie, has a dynamic duo. That’s us. I think we could have our own show, and honestly, I think people would watch it. Because we’re the kind of people that laugh so hard we start to cry. We have our own jokes, our own routine, our own language – on second thought, maybe the TV show isn’t such a great idea. The point is, you get me. You understand me. We understand each other. You know when I’m feeling down, the standard “I’m fine” is never enough for you. You just know better. And I’m glad you know better, because sometimes I feel like no one understands me. But you always do. You always know what to do and what to say. I don’t know how, but you’ve perfected the art of tending to me, myself, and I.
You were always that person I never expected to be friends with. I thought we would never get along. I hope we will be the same crazy best friends we are now, just with more grey hairs and wrinkles. I love you!
It makes me happy to know that I will always have you in my life, and you will always have me in your life too. I love you more than you will ever know, best friend. Thank you for being my person, whom I can turn to when no one else is there for me. There’s never a day that goes by where I am not grateful for you.
All the years that I have known you for, you haven’t changed at all. You are still the same beautiful and hardworking person I met the first day. But most importantly, the one thing that hasn’t changed is that you’re still here with me. You are still by my side. You have no idea how happy that makes me feel. I may not have many friends, but it doesn’t bother me because you’re the only friend that I am satisfied with, not only as my friend but also my best friend. You are one of the most precious and important people in my life. We may be far apart from each other, but I know that our bond is stronger than the distance between us. And I just know that our friendship will continue to grow as the days and years go by.
I might not be able to know everything about you, my dearest. Because each and every day is another avenue for me to know you a bit more than before; to get to be closer to you and cherish you so much more than ever before. And I want you to know that one of the reasons why I’m with you is to know you much better. I adore you, my beautiful friend.
Just as true friendship is not measured by how far we’ve been together but rather how well it has been between us. So also real bonding is not measured by the time we’ve spent together in each other company but rather the solace and solitude that comes with being with you, my awesome friend. I love you more than you know.
After looking back at all we have been through, I am more confident now than never before that you are a rare treasure that should be adored. You have been my backbone and my inspiration. My secrets are safer with you than they are with me. I love you, friend.
You are my best friend, my other half, my rock and my anchor, all rolled up into one lovely human being. You are the most special person in my life. We have such a rare bond that can’t be replicated by anyone else. You get me like no one else does. I love how much our friendship has developed from when we were little kids to our adult years. I adore you so much with every inch of my heart.
I guess what I’m trying to say is that I love you. Friendship is one of the most rewarding things life has to offer, and I refuse to take it for granted. I refuse to take you for granted. You, my best friend, my sister, my partner-in-crime. Even when all I can see is the worst in me, you still see the best. You remind me who I am, and who I want to be. You make me a better person. And while the world might tremble at the sight of the two of us (because, honestly, together we’re a force to be reckoned with), I know there’s no one I’d rather laugh and cry with.
Because of you, I laugh a little harder, cry a little less, and smile a whole lot more. Because of you, I’ve learned so many new things that I wouldn’t have learned if you weren’t by my side. Because of you, my experiences in life seem so much richer and so much fuller. Because of you, I can proudly say that there’s someone out there in the world who loves me for who I am – throughout all my craziness and boring moments and everything in between. Because of you, I can say that I am a better person who is made happier with you as my best friend.
I’m grateful to God for making our way crossed and brought you to me. We might not be together every day, but I am sure that you will always be there for me whenever I need you. Because your friendship is like the sunrise which I can’t always have throughout my day, but I’m certain that you will always be there each time I wake up to the break of a new dawn. I love you more than love itself, my best friend.
You are my mirror and my shadow. You are my mirror because you’d never lie to me. You’d always show me who I truly am. And you’d never let me go out of the house wearing an awful outfit. And you are my shadow, too. You never leave my side. You’re always there for me when I need you. And when life shines brightly on me, I feel your presence so much more because I know you’re supporting me through it all.
If our friendship was to be a big beautiful building; I would be the ground, to protect you from every creepy thing and I would be the roof, to be a shade over you during the rainy day; I would be the wall to shield you from the scourging dart of failures; I would be the door, to close every disappointment behind you and I would be the window, so that you can always see clearly every opportunity within your reach. I love you to the moon and back, sweetheart.
I know you’re my best friend because I don’t need to talk to you every single day. I don’t need to be around you all the time. In fact, we can go for weeks without talking. But as soon as we get together, it’s as if we had never stopped talking. Thank you for being my best friend.
My dearest best friend. I hope you stay in my life forever because our friendship is one of the best things to ever happen to me. You light up my life like no other. There is too much to do together. Also, you’re always the person who can bring sunshine to my heart. I love you, my dear best friend.

The claim: Project 2025 is a plan from Trump

A July 5 Facebook post ( direct link , archive link ) includes nine slides describing supposed policy propositions from former President Donald Trump. The slides include an image of Trump along with the title "Project 2025."

“Trump has made his authoritarian intentions quite clear with his Project 2025 plan,” reads the post's caption.

It received more than 500 shares in four days.

Our rating: False

Project 2025 is a political playbook created by the Heritage Foundation and dozens of other conservative groups, not Trump, who said he disagrees with elements of the effort. There are, however, numerous people involved in Project 2025 who worked in Trump's first administration.

President decides which policy recommendations to implement

The Heritage Foundation, a conservative think tank , collaborated with more than 100 conservative groups for Project 2025, also known as the Presidential Transition Project. The result is a more than 900-page playbook with policy recommendations for the next Republican president that reflect the think tank's goal of "(rescuing) the country from the grip of the radical Left."

Trump, however, has sought to publicly distance himself from the effort, as reported by The Washington Post .

“I know nothing about Project 2025,” Trump wrote in a July 5 Truth Social post . “I have no idea who is behind it. I disagree with some of the things they’re saying and some of the things they’re saying are absolutely ridiculous and abysmal. Anything they do, I wish them luck, but I have nothing to do with them.”

Trump didn’t specify which Project 2025 proposals he disagrees with in the statement.

Fact check : No, AP did not report Trump may face 'molestation' charges

Project 2025 said it “does not speak for any candidate or campaign” in a July 5 post on X , formerly Twitter. Its playbook is comprised of suggestions the coalition believes will benefit the "next conservative president."

“But it is ultimately up to that president, who we believe will be President Trump, to decide which recommendations to implement,” the post said.

That said, Project 2025 does involve numerous Trump allies.

Director Paul Dans , for example, was the chief of staff at the Office of Personnel Management during the Trump administration. Trump advisor Stephen Miller and the Trump campaign's National Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt also appeared in a video supporting the project’s “Presidential Administration Academy."

There is also overlap between Trump's platform and Project 2025's proposals.

The project has called for an end to illegal immigration while Trump has vowed to "carry out the largest domestic deportation operation in American history" and "terminate every open borders policy of the Biden administration ," if re-elected.

Project 2025 also supports shutting down the Department of Education , which Trump pledged to do in a 2023 campaign video .

The Heritage Foundation said in a January 2018 news release that Trump had adopted nearly two-thirds of its policy recommendations within his first year in office.

USA TODAY has debunked an array of claims about Trump, including false assertions that he selected Michael Flynn as his vice president , that a video shows “Trump Force One” buzzing a Washington-area airport after the June presidential debate and that Trump was found guilty in his hush-money trial by a jury stacked with Biden supporters .

The Facebook user who shared the post told USA TODAY it's a "logical inference" that Trump supports the project because of the number of his allies who are involved, even if he has not publicly endorsed the effort.

Mad male worker yelling at female colleague asking her to leave office, multiracial coworkers disputing during business negotiations, employees cannot reach agreement, blaming for mistake or crisis

I got laid off and told my horrible boss exactly what I thought of him on the way out. Will this come back to haunt me? Should I write, or call and apologize?

I bet it felt great in the moment, right? It’s every aggrieved employees’ dream to tell a horrible boss off — heck, even songs have been written about it. However, that temporary satisfaction is rarely in your personal best interests, because it’s a small world, you need references and help networking. So, despite how you feel about your boss, you’ve just closed the door on all of that. Depending on what you said,

I think there’s value in explaining that your emotions in the moment of losing your job got to you. Admit that was not the professional way to handle the situation and you are sorry that you took it out on him, and you don’t want your tenure with the company to end on that note. And leave it at that. If your boss has any humanity, he will not hold it against you, or at least not hurt your chances of landing a new job.

I got promoted and now I’m my best friend’s boss. She doesn’t seem happy about it. How do I manage her and not lose her as a pal?

Give her a big fat raise! (Just kidding.)

That’s a hard situation for both of you for obvious reasons.

It’s one thing to become friends with your boss — which usually only happens if there’s a good boss/employee dynamic followed by strong job performance — but to start out as friends and then have to manage your friend’s performance, make decisions about her pay and career, is a changing dynamic to overcome.

I would discuss it openly and acknowledge that you both have to make a work adjustment but the friendship doesn’t have to change. It can be workable unless her ego gets in the way, or you can’t be objective about her performance, or if you feel she isn’t performing well — that will be tough to manage and still maintain the friendship.

See how it goes and which relationship is more important to you both. The answer might be her transferring to a different department, or finding a new job.

‘Goodest Job’ or ‘Good as Job’? The White House Wants a Word.

ABC News tweaked its transcript of an intriguing moment in its Friday interview with the president after the Biden administration and news outlets raised questions.

George Stephanopoulos, left, and President Biden facing each other and sitting in chairs.

ABC News adjusted its initial transcript of a much-discussed moment during President Biden’s Friday interview after White House officials told the network that they believed the president’s words had been inaccurately rendered, according to several people familiar with the discussion.

The moment occurred toward the end of Mr. Biden’s interview, when George Stephanopoulos asked the president how he would feel if he stayed in the presidential race and was defeated by former President Donald J. Trump.

“I’ll feel as long as I gave it my all and I did the goodest job as I know I can do, that’s what this is about,” Mr. Biden said, according to the official transcript that was distributed by ABC on Friday night.

By Saturday afternoon, the quote in the network’s online transcript had changed slightly: “I’ll feel as long as I gave it my all and I did the good as job as I know I can do, that’s what this is about.” The network appended an editors’ note explaining that the transcript “has been updated for clarity.”

Mr. Biden’s actual words at that point during the interview were difficult to make out and open to some degree of interpretation.

ABC’s standards team decided to review the audio after receiving queries on Saturday from the White House along with several news organizations, asking whether Mr. Biden had said “goodest” or “good as,” according to a person briefed on the network’s discussions.

After conducting its review, the network decided to adjust the transcript and append the editors’ note, the person said. The network did not modify the audio and video of the interview itself.

After the ABC transcript was adjusted on Saturday, a spokesman for the president’s re-election campaign emailed several reporters for The New York Times requesting that the word “goodest” be changed in the newspaper’s coverage of the interview, citing the updated transcript.

The Times has revised Mr. Biden’s quote in its articles about the interview to conform with the updated ABC transcript.

At a moment of high political peril for Mr. Biden, and widespread discussion about his physical and mental health, nearly every word he utters in public — particularly in an unscripted setting such as the ABC interview — is under a microscope.

Following Friday’s interview, White House stenographers, who are not political appointees and regularly record all of the president’s public remarks, noticed a difference between their recordings and the ABC transcript, according to one person familiar with the situation.

That led a White House official to raise the issue of the quote’s accuracy with representatives of ABC on Saturday morning, the person said.

The 22-minute interview, which aired on Friday at 8 p.m., was watched by 8.5 million viewers, according to early data from Nielsen. It was ABC’s most-watched prime-time news program, aside from election nights and debates, since Mr. Stephanopoulos interviewed the former F.B.I. director James Comey in April 2018.

A First Amendment fight for the future of the internet

Is computer code a form of speech a case emerging from the wreckage of a cryptocurrency heist is putting that question to the test..

best friend speech write

O n April 14, 2022, Roman Storm posted a link to a news article in an encrypted group chat he shared with his two fellow creators of Tornado Cash, a software application that lets people exchange cryptocurrency with extra layers of privacy.

“Guys we are f----d,” Storm wrote, according to the US Department of Justice.

The news story revealed that the FBI had pinpointed the Lazarus Group, North Korean state-sponsored hackers, as the perpetrators of a recent $600 million cryptocurrency heist. According to the government, Storm knew that whoever had pulled off that heist had been using Tornado Cash to throw the cops off their tracks. It wasn’t the first time criminals had used the app. But this time, the criminals were affiliated with a nuclear-armed US adversary.

Storm was right about what it meant for him and his fellow creators of the app. That August, the US Treasury Department put Tornado Cash under harsh sanctions . Days later, officials in the Netherlands arrested codeveloper Alexey Pertsev. And a year later, the US Department of Justice indicted Storm and a third developer, Roman Semenov. They are charged with money laundering, violating US sanctions law, and operating an unlicensed money transmitter.

This May, a Dutch court found Pertsev guilty of money laundering and sentenced him to more than five years in prison. Semenov remains at large. Storm’s trial is scheduled to begin in September in New York. He faces up to 45 years behind bars.

Federal prosecutors say Storm helped the Lazarus Group launder money, even though they have presented no evidence he gave direct assistance. Storm’s defenders, who include blockchain technology advocates and the internet freedom group Electronic Frontier Foundation, say all he did was help create a software tool.

Storm’s lawyers say the First Amendment protects his actions, as for nearly three decades US courts have recognized software code as protected speech. “At its heart, this prosecution represents an unprecedented attempt to criminalize the development of software,” Storm’s lawyers argued in March in a motion to dismiss the indictment.

The dispute is technically and legally complex. But at its center is a long-running debate over whether software code is protected by the First Amendment. And the outcome could determine whether a new class of software is effectively off-limits for Americans.

‘The bad things people do with the software you write’

In 1995, mathematician Daniel Bernstein sued the US Department of State. He said the government violated his First Amendment rights by requiring him to register as an arms dealer and apply for an export license before he could publish the source code for Snuffle, his encryption algorithm. A district court judge agreed with Bernstein, rejecting the government’s argument that Snuffle’s code was conduct, not speech.

The Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals affirmed the lower court’s decision in 1999. Several other lower court decisions in the late 1990s reached the same conclusion as in the Bernstein case. Judges viewed code as being like speech because it is written in a language and is a mode of communication — it’s “expressive.”

But contrary to what many in the tech world seem to think, this legal matter isn’t settled. In a dissent to the Ninth Circuit’s decision in Bernstein, Judge Thomas G. Nelson raised a compelling point: “The basic function of encryption source code is to act as a method of controlling computers,” he wrote. “This functional aspect of encryption source code contains no expression; it is merely the tool used to build the encryption machine.”

The code that runs Tornado Cash may be expressive, but it also functions. It instructs a blockchain network to anonymize cryptocurrency transactions by using advanced cryptography to untraceably transfer cryptocurrency from one software “wallet” to another. While the crypto is in the first wallet, it is linked to every transaction the wallet has ever participated in. In the second wallet, all that history is wiped away.

Crypto and privacy advocates are steadfast that encrypting transactions in this way has legitimate uses — anonymous donations to a sensitive political cause, for instance. Like real cash, though, Tornado Cash also has illicit uses. The Lazarus Group used it to sweep away digital breadcrumbs that let investigators track criminal funds on blockchains.

What makes Tornado Cash new in the eyes of the law is that although Storm and the other developers knew the cryptocurrency thieves were using Tornado Cash, they couldn’t stop the criminals. The core of the privacy tool is a set of smart contracts (a crypto term for software that runs on a blockchain) that no one, not even Tornado Cash’s creators, can modify or shut down.

This is the whole point of blockchains: They operate free of the control of any single entity or person. Blockchain-based software can have built-in kill switches and ways for developers to make make upgrades, but the Tornado Cash developers chose to relinquish all control over the core application in 2020. They say their intention was to give cryptocurrency users privacy, not to help criminals.

“It’s really a question of whether you can be held criminally culpable for the bad things people do with the software you write, even if you didn’t intend for them to do those bad things with that software,” says Peter Van Valkenburgh, director of research at the policy advocacy group Coin Center, based in Washington, D.C.

In the Netherlands it appears the answer is yes, and Alexey Pertsev must spend more than five years in prison for it. The US Constitution makes Roman Storm’s case more complicated.

When parallels break down

The sanctions law Storm allegedly broke is called the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA). Passed in 1976, it gives the president powers to regulate international commerce in the name of national security. In 1988, Congress amended IEEPA to clarify that the president cannot block the international exchange of First Amendment-protected items including books, music, artwork, and other “informational materials.” This update became known as the Berman Amendments.

Storm’s defense team has argued that the Tornado Cash software qualifies as informational materials under the Berman Amendments. And even if that law doesn’t protect Storm, they argue that the First Amendment does.

The government responds that much of Storm’s defense rests on a simplistic notion: that “he should not be held criminally liable because his conduct involved computer software.” That idea “would have breathtakingly broad implications,” prosecutors wrote in April in a filing with the court. For example, they said, it would keep the president from blocking an American bank with a foreign branch from doing business with a sanctioned person or group over banking software.

But the bank parallel doesn’t work, argues Van Valkenburgh. Banks have legal relationships with their customers — promises, guarantees, terms of service, etc. Those relationships are “conduct” (and not expressive conduct, like flag burning), he says, and the First Amendment doesn’t prevent the government from regulating that conduct. The Tornado Cash developers had no such relationships with their users, Van Valkenburgh says. Crucially, they never took control of any user funds. As Van Valkenburgh sees it, the developers’ only conduct, in the legal sense, was publishing software without a backdoor that would let them control its use once it was out in the world.

The problem with ‘code is speech’

The complexity of the Tornado Cash case makes it challenging to parse the arguments. But ultimately it is about who is responsible when a novel piece of software is used to break the law.

Therein lies the problem with the claim that “code is speech.”

If we assume all code is speech, any regulation of software will be vulnerable to a First Amendment challenge. Given the role that software plays in so many of our interactions today, that’s not workable, says Xiangnong (George) Wang , a staff attorney at the Knight First Amendment Institute at Columbia University.

In a 2021 article in the Wisconsin Law Review, Wang argued that whether code is speech is no longer the right question for lawyers, judges, and lawmakers to consider. “It’s really about how it’s used,” he says. “What are the actual values at stake?” Is it an attempt to participate in democratic discourse? To disseminate useful information to the public? Or is it to distribute a product? There won’t always be clear-cut answers, Wang says. But as software becomes even more pervasive and complex — even autonomous — the public will have to decide what exactly the First Amendment should protect.

Decentralized software applications and AI make things even less clear-cut. But Storm’s lawyers are still betting they can lean hard into the First Amendment.

Van Valkenburgh’s organization, Coin Center, has argued that Storm’s choice to write and publish Tornado Cash “is the expression of a powerful political and scientific viewpoint in and of itself.” In other words, it’s arguing that systems like Tornado Cash should be allowed despite the government’s distaste for them.

“Some in the US Government may strongly have preferred that (the developers) would have published their code with a secret vulnerability or a ‘backdoor’ for law enforcement, or simply not published their viewpoints at all,” Coin Center said in brief supporting Storm. It added: “The defendants cannot and should not be held liable for having merely published software as they saw fit.”
