Web 2.0 Technology: Development and Issues Essay

  • To find inspiration for your paper and overcome writer’s block
  • As a source of information (ensure proper referencing)
  • As a template for you assignment

The terminology Web 2.0 came into limelight in 2004 in reference to the then developed second generation of the World Wide Web. Following the earlier development of Web 1.0, the inventors settled on Web 2.0, as this is the routine of naming new software programs using an ascending version digit.

The new Web 2.0 has more features and functionalities as compared to the old version, Web 1.0. Nevertheless, it is imperative to note that Web 2.0 is a representation of a progression of technological step-ups and not just a precise version of the Web. For example, some of the most common features of Web 2.0 include blogs, Wikis, social networking and Web applications. Each of these features performs a specific function (Tim 1).

The development of Web 2.0 has enhanced the manner in which people communicate and do business using the Web. For instance, blogs are important to private citizens in that people can post their feelings and personal updates on the Web. Thus, anybody interested in knowing the affairs of a certain person can easily access that information through the blogs. Wikis are also vital features of Web 2.0, as they allow users to affix new information on the Web or revise online information.

Additionally, the social networking cites such as twitter, Facebook, 2go, and MySpace enables users to create and tailor personal information. Finally yet importantly, the web applications have been instrumental in answering the business needs of many users who mainly operate their programs unswervingly in a Web browser (Anderson 1).

Undeniably, Web 2.0 enables level user interaction not provided by Web 1.0. Since the development of Web 2.0, several nonprofit organizations now operate proficiently, create more funding, which in turn affect the lives of many people around the globe. For example, Library 2.0 ibis useful in libraries by supporting cataloguing efforts, and enables the sharing of information with other partner libraries. This type of technology answers the needs of business and private citizens in very many ways.

For instance, in the field of library science, Web 2.0 attends to the needs of both citizens and business. On the other hand, most marketing executives have found Web 2.0 an important technology that end-runs conventionally impassive information technology departments. Web 2.0 also enables marketing managers to be in touch with their customers by updating them on new product development, the undergoing endorsements and service improvements.

Some companies use wikis to answer frequently asked questions regarding promotions, products, services or any interests. In addition, some media powerhouses such as Business Week and New York Times use Web 2.0 to outsource their services hence, positively affecting the threshold for bunch approval of their services (Parise 1).

Both private citizens and financial institutions have found Web 2.0 of great help. For instance, banks have found social networking sites as imperative tools of communication that not only enhance customer loyalty, but also, send important information to customers. Some financial institutions use social networking cites such as Twitter and YouTube to inform their customers on the latest developments, say, the Chief Executive Officer speaking on market news.

It is also important to note that many of the small business enterprises have come out strongly to compote with big business empires due to Web 2.0. Undoubtedly, Web 2.0 is a paramount technology that helps the sharing of information from one user to another. It has also helped many business, both new and old, to adopt new strategies of involving customers. In other words, Web 2.0 acts as a link between business and customers. (Parise 1).

So far, Web 2.0 has been successful amid criticism faced in confronting and in updating its technologies. In fact, some people have even suggested that Web 2.0 does not represent the world of World Wide Web-labeling it a series of Web 1.0. For instance, many of the issues facing Web 2.0 revolves around its techniques (AJAX). One of the most common techniques of developing Web 2.0 is AJAX. However, confronting this technique has been a vain work since it fails to substitute the fundamental protocols such as HTTP.

Instead, all manner confrontation or update will lead to the formation of an extra layer of abstraction. Some experts argue that some of the techniques involved in developing Web 2.0 existed back before the adoption of Web 2.0. Thus, simple definition and excessive hype are common problems facing this technology. It is also important to note that anybody can update information on the Web 2.0. This has resulted into digital amateurism and vanity (Tim 1).

Take for example wikis. Many people update false information on wikis and mislead other people who are genuinely searching for information. Thus, the issue of security is a great concern to many users of Web 2.0. The vulnerability of Web 2.0 attack lies in the fact that any individual can upload the stored contents. Thus, hackers find it easier to carry out their malicious intentions. Of course, this will affect both business and private citizens who rely on such websites for information regarding certain affairs or even market news.

Software developers agree that Web 2.0 is prone to attacks due technical loopholes. Otherwise, the only sure way of protecting Web 2.0 from hacking and message retrieval is using a multifaceted JavaScript code on the user machines. However, even with the multifaceted JavaScript, the URL filtering and cataloguing products do not incriminate nor block some popular sites such as Wikipedia and MySpace, and considers them trusted even when they pose danger.

The biggest question however is how companies should address the issue of insecurity as posed by Web 2.0. In dealing with the problem, software researchers have embarked in the development of assistive technologies that will provide security to this technology. For instance, companies have developed new security solutions with the potential of examining and analyzing every web request or reply before taking an action. A very good example of such security solution is the real-time code analysis.

Since the technology is prone to very many attacks, the real-time code analyzer inspects the exchanges between the browser and the web servers. Here, every bit of information must undergo scrutiny to identity its authenticity, irrespective of its source.

By doing this, the technology ensures that malevolent information whether from trusted sites or otherwise, does not penetrate into the network. Thus, all networking sites and web pages like Facebook, MySpace, Gamma, Twitter and Yahoo pass through the analyzer just like any other normal web page (Yuval 1).

Like any other web technology, Web 2.0 and is prone to ever-emerging complicated web-borne threats. The exploitation of AJAX has reached a compromising state hence, the need for commanding security solutions, which will protect them from malicious intentions. Companies should therefore espouse profound approaches, which involve synchronized (real-time) inspection and signature-based security technologies.

In addition, some companies are busy deploying manifold security solutions aimed at protecting the company’s confidential information and internet-based resources. It is also important for companies to mount a security machine right at the internet gateway to carry out real-time code inspection of information that enters and leaves the commercial network. Such actions will address the issue of insecurity that is so common in Web 2.0 technologies (et.al. 1).

Earlier, we have to stand in queues to send mails (letters), for withdrawing or depositing money, to book tickets, etc. but after the dawn of the internet, all these things become quite easy. Also, we do not have to waste our precious time standing in queues.

Also, the internet has contributed a lot to the environment as much of the offices (government and private), school and colleges have become digital that saves countless paper.

Although, there is no doubt that the internet had made our life easier and convenient but we can’t leave the fact that it has caused many bigger problems in the past. And with the speed, we are becoming addict to it a day in will come when it will become our basic necessity.

What we know about the computer update glitch disrupting systems around the world

A Crowdstrike office in Sunnyvale, Calif. An overnight outage was blamed on a software update that the cybersecurity firm sent to Microsoft corporate customers, including many airlines.

Microsoft, which hosts cloud services with businesses and governments, said it was grappling with service outages after a glitch triggered by software distributed by cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike. Haven Daley/AP hide caption

A technological meltdown left employees of airlines, banks, hospitals and emergency services around the world staring at the dreaded “blue screen of death” on Friday as their computers went inert in what is being described as a historic outage.

“This is basically what we were all worried about with Y2K, except it's actually happened this time,” internet security analyst Troy Hunt said via X .

Security experts race to fix critical software flaw threatening industries worldwide

From continent to continent, Microsoft users reported being suddenly knocked offline, and the culprit was determined to be cybersecurity company CrowdStrike, which says one of its routine software updates malfunctioned.

“CrowdStrike is actively working with customers impacted by a defect found in a single content update for Windows hosts,” the company said in a statement.

Customers using Mac and Linux operating systems were not affected, CrowdStrike said.

When the faulty update crashed computer systems, scores of airport travelers were stranded, hospital appointments were delayed and live news broadcasts were cut short.

How big is the outage?

It is massive, far-reaching and sudden.

Some computer problems cascade, creating ripples of failures. But in this case, the flaw permeated Microsoft systems worldwide nearly immediately. The company says its Windows 365 Cloud PCs, apps and services were affected.

Microsoft remains the dominant desktop operating system worldwide, with more than 72% market share, according to the Statcounter website . The CrowdStrike problem does not directly affect all of those machines: its security software is mainly used by businesses and large organizations. The company says its customers include 43 U.S. states and nearly 300 companies in the Fortune 500.

Hundreds of thousands of Microsoft outages were reported on Friday, according to Downdetector , the website that tracks outages based on users’ reports.

In 16 hours, 311,000 global outage reports came in, Michelle Badrian, senior communications manager at Ookla, which owns Downdetector, told NPR. Of that figure, she added, 58,000 reports were from the U.S., 26,000 from the U.K., and 20,000 from India. Large numbers of reports also came in from Germany, Canada and Australia.

There are signs that relief is on the way: Badrian said that as of midday Friday ET, “we are observing report volumes declining both for Microsoft services and for all services overall.”

While server-related outages are common, the scale of the CrowdStrike disruption was astonishing to many tech observers.

“This IT outage is a stark reminder of how dependent we are on technology and many other things that happen behind the scenes that most of us are unaware of,” said Louisville-based tech executive Adam Robinson on X . “Modern society and the many comforts we enjoy is a fragile thing.”

What about air travel?

More than 2,000 flights originating or landing in the U.S. were canceled as of noon ET Friday, and more than twice that number were delayed, according to the FlightAware tracking site.

Delta Airlines, United Airlines and American Airlines announced they were resuming some or all of their scheduled flights after initially being grounded when the problem struck their systems. The airlines also said they were issuing waivers to affected customers.

Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport — a major hub for long-distance flights — said a "global system failure" impacted incoming and outgoing flights on one of the busiest days of the year.

Landings at Zurich airport were suspended and flights in Hungary disrupted.

Spanish airport operator Aena reported a computer systems “incident” at all Spanish airports that it said could cause delays.

What other kinds of services went offline?

In some states, including Alaska and Ohio , 911 phone lines were down.

The U.K.’s National Health Service has been widely affected. The NHS said Friday that doctors’ appointments and patient records had been affected but that there was no known impact on emergency services. The BBC reported that two-thirds of doctors’ practices in Northern Ireland had been affected, with doctors unable to access patient records, generate prescriptions or see the result of laboratory tests.

In Germany, some hospitals canceled non-emergency operations.

Broadcasters around the world were also affected. In France and Australia , live television broadcasts were knocked offline.

Sky News, a major U.K. news channel, was off air for a time on Friday morning. It later returned, but without “ full capabilities , ” its chairman, David Rhodes, said on X Friday afternoon. A post on Australia’s ABC News website said the broadcaster was experiencing a “major network outage.”

The London Stock Exchange’s news service stopped working. Shipping in the Baltic was also impacted, with the container hub of Gdansk in Poland hit by major disruptions.

How do people fix their computers?

CrowdStrike says the problem was not a cyberattack, but rather a software glitch. The company said that after identifying the issue, it withdrew the "problematic channel file" that was affecting customers' systems.

Because of that move, if a Windows system with CrowdStrike's Falcon sensor was brought online after 1:27 a.m. ET Friday , the company said, it wouldn't be affected.

It also published a workaround that involves booting a Windows machine in a recovery environment, deleting a single file in the CrowdStrike directory, and restarting.

What is CrowdStrike?

It’s a U.S. cybersecurity firm based in Austin, Texas. The company went public in 2019 and is currently in the S&P 500 index. As of early July, CrowdStrike’s stock had been riding months of gains. But share prices fell sharply in early trading Friday.

“This is clearly a major black eye for CrowdStrike,” said WedBush analyst Dan Ives.

CrowdStrike made headlines in 2016, when the company was hired by the Democratic National Committee to investigate a breach of its data systems . CrowdStrike determined that the hack was a case of foreign interference — the work of Russian-backed hacking groups.

The company’s marquee product is its “Falcon” cybersecurity software — and it traced the current problem to a change in a sensor in that system. That also helps explain how and why the resulting failures might have spread so quickly: Rather than being stored locally, the Falcon security platform “is 100% cloud-based.”

The company apologized for the outages on Friday, stating, "We understand the gravity of the situation and are deeply sorry for the inconvenience and disruption."

This is a developing story and will be updated.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming how we innovate, grow our economy, and protect our nation. However, certain strategic areas of the US government’s artificial intelligence capabilities currently lag industry while foreign adversaries are investing in AI at scale. If U.S. government leadership is not rapidly established in this sector, the nation risks falling behind in the development of safe and trustworthy AI for national security, energy, and scientific discovery, and thereby compromising our ability to address pressing national and global challenges.

DOE’s Enabling Infrastructure

DOE and its 17 national laboratories are uniquely positioned to develop AI capabilities for the nation, leveraging key enabling components:

  • Data: DOE is the leading generator of classified and unclassified scientific data through the world’s largest collection of advanced experimental facilities, including particle accelerators, powerful light sources, specialized facilities for genomics and nanoscience, and neutron scattering sources.
  • Computing : For decades, DOE has built and operated the world’s fastest, most powerful, and highly energy efficient supercomputers. These supercomputers are strategic components of the nation’s defensive capabilities, drive innovation through open access to the scientific community, and are the basis upon which to build safe and trustworthy AI capability for the nation.
  • Workforce: DOE and its national labs host over 40,000 physicists, chemists, biologists, materials scientists, and computer scientists, who tackle some of the most urgent challenges in the national interest.
  • Partnerships : DOE has unparalleled experience in mission-driven public-private collaborations. Through the Exascale Computing Project (ECP), DOE worked with industry partners to co-design and develop critical components of the computer chips that power today’s leading AI models.

Frontiers in Artificial Intelligence for Science, Security and Technology (FASST)

The proposed Frontiers in AI for Science, Security, and Technology (FASST) initiative leverages DOE’s enabling infrastructure to deliver key assets for the national interest:

  • Advance National Security . The development of AI models for national security applications, such as threat detection and strategic deterrence is crucial to maintaining America’s defensive posture.
  • Attract and build a talented workforce . FASST is the most ambitious AI initiative of its kind. This mission will attract, train, and retain top scientific talent for a leading capability deployed in the public interest.
  • Harness AI for Scientific Discovery . FASST will develop AI tools that will dramatically reduce the time to discovery and extend the nation’s competitive edge in technological innovation.
  • Address Energy Challenges . FASST will unlock new clean energy sources, optimize energy production, and improve grid resilience, and build tomorrow’s advanced energy economy. America needs low-cost energy to support economic growth and FASST can help us meet this challenge.
  • Develop technical expertise necessary for AI governance . FASST will provide insight and independent expertise to quickly inform and validate standards and regulations for a responsible and safe AI industry.

FASST Overview

FASST will build the world's most powerful integrated scientific AI systems through four key interconnected pillars:

Download the factsheet on Frontiers in Artificial Intelligence for Science, Security and Technology (FASST)

AI-Ready Data

Data is the fuel that drives the engine of AI. FASST will transform DOE’s vast repositories of classified and unclassified scientific data into the world’s largest, high-quality repository of AI-ready datasets. These data repositories will be made available to partners across government, industry, and the scientific community to train, test, and validate the next generation of scientific AI models.

Frontier-Scale AI Computing Infrastructure and Platforms

FASST will build the next generation of energy efficient AI-enabled supercomputing platforms and algorithms capable of seamlessly merging scientific computing with machine learning and digital infrastructure, including high speed data networks and storage.  FASST will establish public-private partnerships that will lead to innovation, including vendor agreements to develop, leverage and advance the frontier of what is currently possible.

Safe, Secure, and Trustworthy AI Models and Systems

Combining DOE’s scientific and engineering data with commensurate computing power, DOE will build, train, test, and validate frontier-class AI models for science. Using the diverse datasets established under the AI-Ready Data pillar, these models will learn to speak the languages of physics, chemistry, and biology, thereby accelerating discovery across all branches of science. Developing these models will also provide insight into the properties of AI systems at scale, enabling the ability to predict and manage emergent behaviors for safety, security, trustworthiness, and privacy.

AI Applications

AI models developed through FASST will revolutionize the way DOE delivers on its science, energy, and security mission. AI-accelerated scientific discoveries can lead to affordable batteries for electric vehicles, breakthroughs in fusion energy, new cancer-fighting drugs, and help assure our national security. While industry focuses on model development for commercial uses, DOE has the scientific and technological expertise to bring uniquely tailored models into strategic and critical application spaces that would otherwise be underinvested.  These AI models will also be combined with autonomous labs– a combination of robotics, machine learning, and simulations - to rapidly design and conduct scientific experiments and generate valued data, creating a virtuous cycle for the development of ever more capable models.

Why FASST now ?

The speed and scale with which AI is developing requires investment in a strategic capability now.  Without FASST, the United States stands to lose its competitive scientific edge and ability to maintain our national and economic security, will have a less diverse and competitive innovation AI ecosystem, will not have the independent technical expertise necessary to govern AI, and will lose the nation’s ability to attract and train a talented workforce.  Through FASST, we will meet the mission needs of national security, energy security, and scientific discovery that will support sustained economic prosperity for the nation for decades to come.

Digital innovations are being used for plant breeding and harvesting equipment. Software and mobile devices are helping farmers harvest better. With various data and information available to farmers, they can make better-informed decisions, for example, tracking the amount of carbon stored in soil and helping with climate change.

Disadvantages of Technology:

People have become dependent on various gadgets and machines, resulting in a lack of physical activity and tempting people to lead an increasingly sedentary lifestyle. Even though technology has increased the productivity of individuals, organisations, and the nation, it has not increased the efficiency of machines. Machines cannot plan and think beyond the instructions that are fed into their system. Technology alone is not enough for progress and prosperity. Management is required, and management is a human act. Technology is largely dependent on human intervention.

Computers and smartphones have led to an increase in social isolation. Young children are spending more time surfing the internet, playing games, and ignoring their real lives. Usage of technology is also resulting in job losses and distracting students from learning. Technology has been a reason for the production of weapons of destruction.

Dependency on technology is also increasing privacy concerns and cyber crimes, giving way to hackers.

Major airlines, medical facilities, businesses and police forces around the world were hit by a massive information technology glitch Friday, with Microsoft computers around the world showing " Blue Screens of Death ."

The cybersecurity company CrowdStrike said Friday that the outages were the result of a routine software update gone wrong, "not a security incident or cyberattack."

CrowdStrike, which provides cybersecurity services and software for many large corporations that use Microsoft systems, later issued a new software update that automatically fixed some computers. But others must be manually restarted and patched, causing huge delays.

Microsoft announced late Friday morning that its 365 apps and services had recovered, and CrowdStrike said a fix had been deployed early in the morning. But some frozen computers couldn’t receive CrowdStrike’s automatic update, leading to some of the problems lingering into the weekend.

Many flights were delayed as of Friday afternoon . Starbucks locations in New York had resumed normal wait times , despite its mobile order-ahead feature still not working.

The glitch brought chaos to a number of key institutions and businesses around the world that may take some time to clear up.

Many flights were grounded across the globe, and stores and broadcasters in several countries went offline. According to the aviation technology company FlightAware, the tech glitch was responsible for more than half of the U.S.'s 1,352 flight delays and cancellations before 8 a.m. ET on Friday.

Major carriers, including American Airlines , Delta Air Lines and United Airlines , all issued ground stops Friday morning citing communications issues. Passengers traveling to the United States from as far away as Japan had their flights canceled. Delta ordered a “global ground stop,”  said Rep. Eric Swalwell, D-Calif., a member of the House subcommittee on cybersecurity.

George Kurtz, president and CEO of CrowdStrike, said the problems could persist.

“It could be some time for some systems that just automatically won’t recover,” he told NBC’s “TODAY” show on Friday.

Kurtz said the company was “deeply sorry for the impact that we’ve caused to customers, to travelers, to anyone affected by this,” adding the issue had been fixed on its end.

“Many of the customers are rebooting the system, and it’s coming up, and it’ll be operational because we fixed it on our end,” he said. “We’re just trying to sort out where the negative interaction was,” he said of the faulty update that affected Windows PCs.

Earlier, in a post on X , Kurtz said that the outages were due to a “defect found in a single content update for Windows hosts.”

In Europe, Berlin’s Brandenburg Airport said there would be delays to passenger check-ins “because of a technical fault,” and Aena, which manages 46 airports in Spain, said “an incident in the computer system” could cause delays. Several budget airlines in South Korea reported technical problems and delays, The Associated Press said. Sydney Airport, one of Australia’s largest, said there would be delays.

Paris' airport authority said in a statement that while its systems were not affected ahead of next week's Olympic Games opening ceremony, "this situation has an impact on the operations of airlines at Paris-Charles de Gaulle and Paris-Orly airports: delays in check-in, delays and temporary suspension of some flights," according to the AP.

Global technology outage

The Paris Olympics organizing committee told Reuters that while the outage was slowing its operations, its ticket sales remained unaffected. Elsewhere in the world of sports, British soccer team Manchester United delayed a ticket release scheduled for Friday, blaming problems with Microsoft.

That was just one of many businesses affected across the United Kingdom, with train operators blaming IT outages for cancellations Friday morning and the London Stock Exchange saying that a “3rd party global technical issue” had prevented its regulatory news service from posting any new items.

The country’s National Health Service posted on X that “the NHS is aware of a global IT outage and an issue with a [general practitioner] appointment and patient record system.” The NHS that the system’s emergency phone service was still operating.

In Israel, at least 15 major hospitals were affected, according to media there. However, most medical centers had either returned to normal operations or reverted to manual operations. The emergency line of the country’s ambulance service was also affected.

At 2:20 a.m. ET, Alaska State Troopers said that 911 and nonemergency phone numbers across the state were not working “due to a nationwide technology-related outage."

The glitch affected news outlets, too, including NBC News. Sky News, NBC News' British partner broadcaster, was temporarily unable to air live news. Broadcasters in Australia also reported problems.

In a blog posted late Friday afternoon , Kurtz wrote that CrowdStrike staffers would be on call over the weekend to help affected customers, and warned of hackers and scammers exploiting the situation.

“We know that adversaries and bad actors will try to exploit events like this," he said. "I encourage everyone to remain vigilant and ensure that you’re engaging with official CrowdStrike representatives."

Eshe Nelson reported from London and Danielle Kaye from New York.

Across the world, critical businesses and services including airlines, hospitals, train networks and TV stations, were disrupted on Friday by a global tech outage affecting Microsoft users.

In many countries, flights were grounded, workers could not get access to their systems and, in some cases, customers could not make card payments in stores. While some of the problems were resolved within hours, many businesses, websites and airlines continued to struggle to recover.

What happened?

A series of outages rippled across the globe as information displays, login systems and broadcasting networks went dark.

The problem affecting the majority of services was caused by a flawed update by CrowdStrike , an American cybersecurity firm, whose systems are intended to protect users from hackers. Microsoft said on Friday that it was aware of an issue affecting machines running “CrowdStrike Falcon.”

But Microsoft had also said there was an earlier outage affecting U.S. users of Azure, its cloud service system. Some users may have been affected by both. Even as CrowdStrike sent out a fix, some systems were still affected by midday in the United States as businesses needed to make manual updates to their systems to resolve the issue.

George Kurtz, the president and chief executive of CrowdStrike, said on Friday morning that it could take some time for some systems to recover.
