Watch how you look when you speak. Make sure your mouth is moving. Keep your posture. Don’t fiddle with your hands. Practice emphatic gestures. We communicate a lot with our bodies, so make sure your body is communicating the same thing as your words.

After practicing for a while, record your voice. Play it back to see how you sound.

Make sure that people can hear you. With a microphone, that’s not an issue. But, will there be a microphone? It’s best to make sure.

Even with a microphone, some people don’t speak loud enough or clearly enough. If your audience has difficulty hearing you or understanding your words, they’ll find it even tougher to understand your message.

Loud is good. But not all the time. Sometimes, you need to raise your voice to a crescendo for emphasis. Other times, lowering your voice to almost a whisper will get their attention even better. You should do both.

You should also vary the pace of speaking. There are times for speaking fast. There are times for speaking slow. There are times to pause for emphasis, especially when you want the audience to think about a question you just asked or a new idea you have just suggested.

Make sure there is water at the lectern. You don’t want your speech hijacked by a dry throat.

The other thing you don’t want to happen during your speech is the sudden need to visit the washroom. Empty shortly before the speech.

When you speak with friends or colleagues, do you look over their heads? Of course not. Look people in the eye as you speak. You don’t have to look at any one person for more than a few seconds. Some speakers make eye contact with one person for a whole sentence, then switch to somebody else for the next sentence.

Be yourself…only better.

Most important is to be yourself. Let your personality shine through. Don’t try out humor from the podium that would not be your style in real life. Don’t adopt a speaking style at the lectern that is radically different than how you would explain things in a meeting room or church basement. The words and the associated turning points forever are linked with the famous speakers — Abraham Lincoln, John F. Kennedy, Martin Luther King Jr., and Ronald Reagan.

However, only two of them actually wrote the words they spoke: Lincoln and King. Kennedy, Reagan, and countless other historical figures breathed life into speeches written by others.

Not every speech writer has the opportunity to write for a president or a legendary civil rights leader. A wedding toast, commencement address, keynote presentation at a conference — these speeches won’t necessarily change the course of history, but they’re important to the people delivering them.

For example, Peter Robinson, one of Reagan’s speech writers, spent time in Berlin before he wrote Reagan’s “Tear Down This Wall” speech in 1987. During his  preliminary research , Robinson spoke with a U.S. diplomat in West Berlin, took a helicopter flight over the city, and conversed with German citizens.

Robinson devised the famous challenge — “Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!” — after noticing the bleak conditions on the East Berlin side of the wall and hearing the sentiment expressed by a German dinner companion.

The work Robinson put into the research led to one of the most memorable public statements by a U.S. president in the 20th century. By 1989, the people of Berlin were free to cross the once-formidable barrier.

Robinson’s work on the speech was an excellent example of how thorough research became the foundation for a speech that marked a historical turning point.

Conducting Interviews

In addition to learning as much as possible about the topic through research, a speech writer must know how a speaker talks and what message the speaker wishes to deliver. One way to learn this is to conduct an interview.

There are two types of interview questions: fact-finding and open-ended.

Fact-finding questions are intended to learn details about the speaker’s expertise in the topic. This can include education, work experience, or research projects.

Open-ended questions are intended to provide detail, color, and anecdotes that might provide the audience with emotional access to the speaker’s point of view. This might include information about how and why the speaker became interested in the topic, or it might be a relevant story about the topic drawn from the speaker’s life.

We all have that image of the classic court reporter in our heads: A person in the courtroom, leaning over a little machine, typing away faster than the eye can see. While the job of the court reporter has evolved over the years (as all jobs do), it’s still largely the same: lots of typing in the service of creating a perfect record of legal proceedings.

But there’s a different way to record courtroom activities, and it doesn’t involve typing away at 225 words per minute. A voice writer, or voice court reporter, uses their voice to report exactly what happens in a legal situation.

What to Know About Voice Writing

Voice writing is a form of legal transcription where a reporter dictates all spoken words, sounds, gestures, and reactions that happen during court proceedings. But doesn’t a person in the courtroom audibly dictating the events get distracting? Great question! The answer is that no one hears a peep uttered by a legal voice writer because they dictate into a sound-dampening device called a stenomask, which is a court reporter mouthpiece that records everything the voice writer says, verbatim.

The stenomask connects to a computer that uses speech-recognition software to turn the spoken words into a text format that can be used to create a transcript or video captions in real time. This real-time transcription allows hearing-impaired people, judges, attorneys, and other legal personnel to receive instant access to readable court proceedings. The same technology can also be used for academic lectures, seminars, or church services.

Voice Writer Responsibilities

A voice writer’s primary job is to provide a verbatim depiction of legal and court proceedings. They’re not only responsible for word-for-word depictions of what is said; they also identify every speaker and describe emotional beats, gestures, intent, and other courtroom noises. The ultimate goal is accuracy; voice writers are expected to be at least 99% accurate in their depictions.

Physical Challenges of Voice Reporters

A voice writer’s job is more physically strenuous than it appears. While stenographers and court reporters can struggle with carpal tunnel syndrome, wrist challenges, and back issues from sitting and typing all day, speaking nonstop comes with its own set of challenges. A voice court reporter has to talk into a restrictive mask for hours on end, which can cause vocal cord challenges, hoarse throats, and even painful cold sores. Talk about a job that deserves hazard pay!

Tools of the Trade

In addition to a stenomask, the hand-held microphone that acts as a padded mask that contains sound-dampening technology that allows the voice writer to speak without being heard, legal voice writers need a few pieces of equipment to do their jobs:

• Transcription software (or a reliable transcription service )

More often than not, the voice writer will have to purchase their own equipment, but there’s a chance an employer would provide some of it. If purchased yourself, your equipment is likely tax deductible.

Voice Writers vs. Court Reporters vs. Stenographers

Though their ultimate goal is almost exactly the same, there are some differences between voice writers, court reporters, and stenographers.

Stenographers transcribe vocal content using a technique called “shorthanded” or “steno.” They type in real-time in a stenography machine using a series of custom symbols that allow for a much speedier method of typing. The steno’s output is then transcribed.

Court reporters turn spoken words into verbatim court transcription , which is then used through the legal process as an accurate depiction of courtroom events. This is accomplished almost in real time, although fully proofed transcriptions are not created instantaneously. A court reporter may have additional duties aside from feverishly typing events as they happen. They may have the authority to swear in witnesses or force someone to repeat what they just said.

Voice writers ’ output is the exact same as that of stenographers and court reporters, except that they speak instead of typing. In all cases, the ultimate goal is the utmost accuracy in the final transcription.

How to Become a Voice Writer

To become a voice writer court reporter, you generally need to have the same qualifications as a “regular” court reporter with one notable exception: typing skills.

Some states require a specific license for court reporters, and most employers require certification by the National Verbatim Court Reporters Association (NVRA).

The NVRA certifies voice writers and steno writers as court reporters, real-time reporters, CART providers, broadcast captioners, and other related professionals. Beyond any licensing considerations, NVRA certification clearly demonstrates that the voice writer, steno writer, or other related professional has attained a level of professionalism and skill well above that of others in the field.

Before you’re prepared to take the NVRA’s certification course, you’ll need some standard education, in the form of an “official” court reporting program. These are available from public universities, community colleges, and even schools dedicated to court reporting. A court reporting program often results in an associate’s degree and usually a court reporting certificate.

While voice writers need to be just as competent with grammar, spelling, and punctuation as other court reporters, they have one inherent advantage: their “tool” is their voice. So rather than learning a skill like typing, they only have to hone something they were born with. Whereas a major part of court reporting schooling is building up to 225 words-per-minute typing skills, a voice writer can achieve a speed of up to 350 words per minute without lifting a finger.

Not needing to type fast is a great reason that voice writing is becoming a popular career path, even if some states don’t yet recognize voice writing as a valid form of court reporting. Currently, Idaho, Illinois, and New Jersey do not allow voice writing in courts.

In states where it’s allowed, voice writing can be a lucrative career. According to Zip Recruiter, the average salary for a voice court reporter is $39 an hour, with wages as high as $66 an hour in some places. If you’re looking for a job as a voice reporter, Zip Recruiter points you toward California, which contains eight of the top ten best-paying cities in the country for voice writers.

Clas awards eight graduate assistantships in writing, editing, engagement.

The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences has awarded eight assistantships to graduate students in the areas of writing, editing, community engagement, and marketing and community in the performing arts.  

These positions, part of a pilot project, provide doctoral students unique opportunities to participate in the college’s outreach, engagement, and writing missions in ways designed to diversify and transform graduate career preparation. 

Iowa Summer Writing Festival  

Hailey Kingsbury , a third year Doctor of Audiology candidate and incoming president of the National Student Speech Language Hearing Association for the 2023-2024 school year, received the 2023 Iowa Summer Writing Festival graduate assistantship. In this position, Kingsbury will support the Iowa Summer Writing Festival, which is administered by the UI Magid Center for Writing.  

“I am passionate about my field [audiology], but I am excited to diversify my graduate experience,” says Kingsbury in her application. “I am confident in my ability to create a collaborative and memorable Iowa Summer Writing Festival and would be honored to work with such a renowned writing program and community.” 

Iowa Sciences Academy 

CLAS awarded two new Iowa Sciences Academy assistantships for the coming term, in addition to renewing one graduate student for a second year. These assistantships will take place during the 2023-2024 academic year.  

Kingsbury, listed above, received one assistantship, and will join second-year physics and astronomy PhD candidate Jacob Payne and third-year PhD candidate in biology, evolution, and ecology Briante Najev , who was renewed for the position.  

Payne is highly experienced in physics, engineering, and astronomy and says he looks forward to providing other students with opportunities to put their shared passion to work.  

“With the Iowa Sciences Academy courses, I hope to empower students and to learn mentorship skills through practice. This assistantship will allow me to hear from students with different backgrounds, dreams, and career goals,” Payne explains in his application.  

Returning to the position for the second year is Najev, who specializes in ecology and evolution. Having published several works in various journals over the years, Najev is especially excited about the writing experience this position will continue to provide.  

“I believe that this graduate assistantship will provide major benefits for my future. Creating seminars, editing scientific articles, and polishing my (and others’) professional development skills are powerful ways of internalizing and teaching a suite of important tools,” Najev says.  

Magid Center for Writing  

Alyssa “Adare” Smith , a second-year PhD candidate in English was renewed for her assistantship with the Magid Center for Writing . Smith will continue with promotional and outreach work for the center.   

“I am passionate about providing and advocating for accessibility, and this assistantship is in line with those values. This opportunity is uniquely positioned to teach me more about the services of the university and will allow me to easily network with like-minded individuals who are dedicated to positively impacting our campus community,” Smith explains.  

Performing arts marketing and communications 

Bronwyn Stewart , a second-year English PhD candidate, received an assistantship working in marketing and communications for the performing arts units in the college. Stewart, who is experienced in marketing, communications, and theatre, hopes to continue working in performing arts post-graduation.  

“After finishing my dissertation, I hope to continue with performance, whether that be in academic settings or at a performance venue,” Stewart says. “I thoroughly enjoy writing and developing new ways to engage people and invite them to participate in the performing arts.” 

Academic editing 

Two graduate students received editing assistantships to help faculty in their work with highly prestigious academic journals.  

Emily Wieder , a third-year PhD candidate in French and francophone world studies, received an editorial assistantship with Dance Research Journal , a peer-reviewed journal of scholarly articles and book reviews published by Cambridge University and co-edited by UI Department of Dance Director Rebekah Kowal . 

“For Dance Research Journal, I look forward to performing more of the reviewing and corresponding tasks that my supervisors have done,” Wieder says. “Those skills will be necessary when I become a professor, as I will write articles and eventually serve on editorial boards.” 

Derick Juptner , a second-year PhD candidate in anthropology, will assist Margaret Beck, professor of anthropology, in her work with the leading publication Journal of Archeological Method and Theory .   

“Overall, I believe the assistantship is a great opportunity for me to improve my skills related to research and publishing, and one that will allow me to support my students and peers during future academic endeavors,” Juptner explains.  

Each assistantship is a 50 percent award, or 20-hours per week, and is available only to graduate students pursuing a doctorate in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

This course will provide opportunities to further develop research skills, to write vividly, and to share their own stories and ideas. Specifically, in this class, students will (1) focus on the relationships between world environments, land, animals and humankind; (2) read various essays by environmental, conservational, and regional authors; and (3) produce student writings. Students will improve their writing skills by reading essays and applying techniques they witness in others’ work and those learned in class. This class is also a course in logical and creative thought. Students will write about humankind’s place in the world and our influence on the land and animals, places that hold special meaning to them or have influenced their lives, and stories of their own families and their places and passions in the world. Students will practice writing in an informed and persuasive manner, in language that engages and enlivens readers by using vivid verbs and avoiding unnecessary passives, nominalizations, and expletive constructions.

Students will prepare writing assignments based on readings and discussions of essays included in Literature and the Environment and other sources. They will use The St. Martin’s Handbook to review grammar, punctuation, mechanics, and usage as needed.

The South Dakota State University 2023-2024 Undergraduate Catalog describes LING 203 as consisting of “[i]nstruction in the theory and practice of traditional grammar including the study of parts of speech, parsing, and practical problems in usage.”

“Grammar” is a mercurial term, though. Typically, we think of it to mean “correct” sentence structure, and, indeed, that is one of its meanings. But Merriam-Webster reminds us “grammar” also refers to “the principles or rules of an art, science, or technique,” taking it beyond the confines of syntactic structures. Grammar also evolves in practice through application (and social, historical, economic changes, among others). Furthermore, grammar evolves as a concept as scholars and educators in the various fields of English studies debate the definition and nature of grammar, including how well its explicit instruction improves students’ writing. In this course, we will use the differing sensibilities, definitions, and fluctuations regarding grammar to guide our work. We will examine the parts of speech, address syntactic structures and functions, and parse and diagram sentences. We will also explore definitions of and debates about grammar. All of this will occur in units about the rules and structures of grammar; the application of grammar rhetorically and stylistically; and the debates surrounding various aspects of grammar, including, but not limited to, its instruction.

A survey of the history of literature written for children and adolescents, and a consideration of the various types of juvenile literature.

ENGL 240.ST1 Juvenile Literature: 5-12 Grade

In English 240 students will develop the skills to interpret and evaluate various genres of literature for juvenile readers. This particular section will focus on various works of literature at approximately the 5th-12th grade level.

Readings for this course include works such as Night, Brown Girl Dreaming, All American Boys, Esperanza Rising, Anne Frank’s Diary: A Graphic Adaptation, Animal Farm, Fahrenheit 451, The Giver, The Hobbit, Little Women, and Lord of the Flies . These readings will be paired with chapters from Reading Children’s Literature: A Critical Introduction to help develop understanding of various genres, themes, and concepts that are both related to juvenile literature, and also present in our readings.

In addition to exploring various genres of writing (poetry, non-fiction, fantasy, historical, non-fiction, graphic novels, etc.) this course will also allow students to engage in a discussion of larger themes present in these works such as censorship, race, rebellion and dissent, power and oppression, gender, knowledge, and the power of language and the written word. Students’ understanding of these works and concepts will be developed through readings, discussion posts, quizzes and exams.

ENGL 240.ST2 Juvenile Literature Elementary-5th Grade

A survey of the history of literature written for children and adolescents, and a consideration of the various genres of juvenile literature. Text selection will focus on the themes of imagination and breaking boundaries.

This course surveys a range of U.S. literatures from about 1865 to the present, writings that treat the end of slavery and the development of a segregated America, increasingly urbanized and industrialized U.S. landscapes, waves of immigration, and the fulfilled promise of “America” as imperial nation. The class will explore the diversity of identities represented during that time, and the problems/potentials writers imagined in response to the century’s changes—especially literature’s critical power in a time of nation-building. Required texts for the course are The Norton Anthology of American Literature: 1865 to the Present and Toni Morrison’s A Mercy.

WMST 247.S01: Introduction to Women, Gender and Sexuality Studies

As an introduction to Women, Gender and Sexuality studies, this course considers the experiences of women and provides an overview of the history of feminist thought and activism, particularly within the United States. Students will also consider the concepts of gender and sexuality more broadly to encompass a diversity of gender identifications and sexualities and will explore the degree to which mainstream feminism has—and has not—accommodated this diversity. The course will focus in particular on the ways in which gender and sexuality intersect with race, class, ethnicity, and disability. Topics and concepts covered will include: movements for women’s and LGBTQ+ rights; gender, sexuality and the body; intersectionality; rape culture; domestic and gender violence; reproductive rights; Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women (MMIW); and more.

ENGL 283.S01 Introduction to Creative Writing

Students will explore the various forms of creative writing (fiction, nonfiction and poetry) not one at a time in a survey format—as if there were decisive walls of separation between then—but as intensely related genres that share much of their creative DNA. Through close reading and work on personal texts, students will address the decisions that writers in any genre must face on voice, rhetorical position, relationship to audience, etc. Students will produce and revise portfolios of original creative work developed from prompts and research. This course fulfills the same SGR #2 requirements ENGL 201; note that the course will involve creative research projects. Successful completion of ENGL 101 (including by test or dual credit) is a prerequisite.

English 284: Introduction to Criticism

This course introduces students to selected traditions of literary and cultural theory and to some of the key issues that animate discussion among literary scholars today. These include questions about the production of cultural value, about ideology and hegemony, about the patriarchal and colonial bases of Western culture, and about the status of the cultural object, of the cultural critic, and of cultural theory itself.

To address these and other questions, we will survey the history of literary theory and criticism (a history spanning 2500 years) by focusing upon a number of key periods and -isms: Greek and Roman Classicism, The Middle Ages and Renaissance, The Enlightenment, Romanticism, Realism, Formalism, Historicism, Political Criticism (Marxism, Post-Colonialism, Feminism, et al.), and Psychological Criticism. We also will “test” various theories we discuss by examining how well they account for and help us to understand various works of poetry and fiction.

This course will focus on William Shakespeare’s poetic and dramatic works and on the cultural and social contexts in which he wrote them. In this way, we will gain a greater appreciation of the fact that literature does not exist in a vacuum, for it both reflects and influences contemporary and subsequent cultures. ENGL 363 Science Fiction

MWF 11-11:50 a.m.

This course explores one of the most significant literary genres of the past century in fiction and in film. We will focus in particular on the relationship between science fiction works and technological and social developments, with considerable attention paid to the role of artificial intelligence in the human imagination. Why does science fiction seem to predict the future? What do readers and writers of the genre hope to find in it? Through readings and viewings of original work, as well as selected criticism in the field, we will address these and other questions. Our reading and viewing selections will include such artists as Ursula K. LeGuin, Octavia Butler, Stanley Kubrick and Phillip K. Dick. Students will also have ample opportunity to introduce the rest of the class to their own favorite science fiction works.

ENGL 383.S01 Creative Writing I

Creative Writing I encourages students to strengthen poetry, creative nonfiction, and/or fiction writing skills through sustained focus on creative projects throughout the course (for example, collections of shorter works focused on a particular form/style/theme, longer prose pieces, hybrid works, etc.). Students will engage in small- and large-group writing workshops as well as individual conferences with the instructor throughout the course to develop a portfolio of creative work. The class allows students to explore multiple genres through the processes of writing and revising their own creative texts and through writing workshop, emphasizing the application of craft concepts across genre, but also allows students to choose one genre of emphasis, which they will explore through analysis of self-select texts, which they will use to deepen their understanding of the genre and to contextualize their own creative work.

ENGL 475.S01 Creative Nonfiction

In this course, students will explore the expansive and exciting genre of creative nonfiction, including a variety of forms such as personal essay, braided essay, flash nonfiction, hermit crab essays, profiles and more. Through rhetorical reading, discussion, and workshop, students will engage published works, their own writing process, and peer work as they expand their understanding of the possibilities presented in this genre and the craft elements that can be used to shape readers’ experience of a text. Students will compile a portfolio of polished work that demonstrates their engagement with course concepts and the writing process.

ENGL 485.S01 Writing Center Tutoring

MW 8:30-9:45 a.m.

Since their beginnings in the 1920s and 30s, writing centers have come to serve numerous functions: as hubs for writing across the curriculum initiatives, sites to develop and deliver workshops, and resource centers for faculty as well as students, among other functions. But the primary function of writing centers has necessarily and rightfully remained the tutoring of student writers. This course will immerse you in that function in two parts. During the first four weeks, you will explore writing center praxis—that is, the dialogic interplay of theory and practice related to writing center work. This part of the course will orient you to writing center history, key theoretical tenets and practical aspects of writing center tutoring. Once we have developed and practiced this foundation, you will begin work in the writing center as a tutor, responsible for assisting a wide variety of student clients with numerous writing tasks. Through this work, you will learn to actively engage with student clients in the revision of a text, respond to different student needs and abilities, work with a variety of writing tasks and rhetorical situations and develop a richer sense of writing as a complex and negotiated social process.

ENGL 492.S01 The Vietnam War in Literature and Film

In 1975, the United States officially included its involvement in the Vietnam War, thus marking 2025 as the 50th anniversary of the conclusion (in name only) of one of the most chaotic, confusing, and complex periods in American history. In this course, we will consider how literature and film attempt to chronicle the Vietnam War and, perhaps more important, its aftermath. I have designed this course for those looking to extend their understanding of literature and film to include the ideas of art, experience, commercial products, and cultural documents. Learning how to interpret literature and movies remains the highest priority of the course, including, for movies, the study of such things as genre, mise-en-scene (camera movement, lighting, etc.), editing, sound and so forth.

We will read Dispatches , A Rumor of War , The Things They Carried , A Piece of My Heart , and Bloods , among others. Some of the movies that we will screen are: Apocalypse Now (the original version), Full Metal Jacket , Platoon , Coming Home , Born on the Fourth of July , Dead Presidents , and Hearts and Minds . Because we must do so, we will also look at some of the more fascinatingly outrageous yet culturally significant fantasies about the war, such as The Green Berets and Rambo: First Blood, Part II .

ENGL 492.S02 Classical Mythology

Modern society’s fascination with mythology manifests itself in the continued success of novels, films and television programs about mythological or quasi-mythological characters such as Hercules, the Fisher King, and Gandalf the Grey, all of whom are celebrated for their perseverance or their daring deeds in the face of adversity. This preoccupation with mythological figures necessarily extends back to the cultures which first propagated these myths in early folk tales and poems about such figures as Oðin, King Arthur, Rhiannon, Gilgamesh, and Odysseus, to name just a few. English 492, a reading-intensive course cross-listed with History 492, primarily aims to expose students to the rich tradition of mythological literature written in languages as varied as French, Gaelic, Welsh, Old Icelandic, Greek, and Sumerian; to explore the historical, social, political, religious, and literary contexts in which these works flourished (if indeed they did); and to grapple with the deceptively simple question of what makes these myths continue to resonate with modern audiences. Likely topics and themes of this course will include: Theories of myth; Mythological Beginnings: Creation myths and the fall of man; Male and Female Gods in Myth; Foundation myths; Nature Myths; The Heroic Personality; the mythological portrayal of (evil/disruptive) women in myth; and Monsters in myth.

This course aims to teach the fundamentals of effective scientific writing and presentation. The course examines opportunities for covering science, the skills required to produce clear and understandable text about technical subjects, and important ethical and practical constraints that govern the reporting of scientific information. Students will learn to present technical and scientific issues to various audiences. Particular emphasis will be placed on conveying the significance of research, outlining the aims, and discussing the results for scientific papers and grant proposals. Students will learn to write effectively, concisely, and clearly while preparing a media post, fact sheet, and scientific manuscript or grant.

Introduction to Graduate Studies is required of all first-year graduate students. The primary purpose of this course is to introduce students to modern and contemporary literary theory and its applications. Students will write short response papers and will engage at least one theoretical approach in their own fifteen- to twenty-page scholarly research project. In addition, this course will further introduce students to the M.A. program in English at South Dakota State University and provide insight into issues related to the profession of English studies.

ENGL 792.ST1 Grant Writing

This online course will familiarize students with the language, rhetorical situation, and components of writing grant proposals. Students will explore various funding sources, learn to read an RFP, and develop an understanding of different professional contexts and the rhetorical and structural elements that suit those distinct contexts. Students will write a sample proposal throughout the course and offer feedback to their peers, who may be writing in different contexts, which will enhance their understanding of the varied applications of course content. Through their work in the course, students will gain confidence in their ability to find, apply for, and receive grant funding to support their communities and organizations.

Best translator, private too!

UPDATED! DeepL (Pro), how I love thee, let me count the ways: This is my favorite translator, with more accurate word definitions than I’ve found elsewhere (proven in my language classes, translating scores of documents I submitted for my residency permit, and for communication with my non-English speaking family), including suggested variations on word and phrase translations. The addition of features found in the other big translator—scanned live translation, photos, documents—means I can FINALLY delete that other app, much to my delight! If you use the online/desktop versions of this app, DeepL also has an editable and recallable glossary, and for those with a Pro account: formal and informal translation options (such as found in languages like German). You can even click on a word or phrase in the translation to trigger a pop up of suggested edits. Another bonus: the makers have designed this app with privacy in mind, collecting no personally identifying data. And one more thing: the big-name translator uses almost four times as much memory as this app. Thank you DeepL team!

Latest Version Lost Critical Functionality

This app isn’t cheap. But I have found it worth the price tag as its translation abilities from English to Portuguese are the best I’ve experienced. I live in Portugal and am very dependent on this app. But, sometimes it misses the right words and gets it all wrong. I have found its dictionary function invaluable to double-check certain words, so I can be sure its right before I send a message. So I was absolutely SHOCKED when this functionality disappeared recently, making the app no better than any other app (most far less expensive) out there. I sent a message and was informed that the dictionary function indeed has been disabled for the phone app. Why? This functionality was so useful and to disable it makes no sense. Also, its not what I purchased. I now need to go to a different app to look up certain words, which is ridiculous given that DeepL clearly has the ability to offer this as a phone app. Many of us use translation apps on our phones, not desktops, so this is very very disappointing and makes me lose confidence that with a paid subscription DeepL won’t make other decisions that take functionality away. I won’t continue paying for this app as it’s considerably less robust than when I purchased it almost a year ago.

This is my personal opinion on this app. In general, I think it’s great, and I would rate it five stars… apart from the fact that there are limited languages. Of course, that’s not the biggest deal, but that’s just what I believe. For example, Korean isn’t available (as stated by a few other reviews I’ve seen), so I commonly use translators that aren’t as accurate, and unequivocally they barely make sense with translations. Another conflict I have with limited languages is the image translator, since occasionally I need to translate photos — I was sad to see the language I needed was not available, and once again had to resort to inadequate translators. (Which thought some languages were other languages…) Other than that, the app is great and I love it! :) Edit: Okay, I have seen the new update and they added more languages! My points about this being a great app still stand and I would recommend this to anyone who needs a reliable translator.
