The Next Generation Omega Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch Is Here

Say whatever you’d like about the Seamaster or the Constellation, the Speedmaster is without a doubt Omega’s most important collection – and the Moonwatch, its crown jewel. So it almost goes without saying that Omega would need to tread very carefully when it came time to bring its most treasured, most collected, and most fiercely debated property into the future. That’s perhaps what makes this update such a dramatically refreshing one – in order to fulfill the unenviable task of modernizing its most important reference without betraying the Speedy’s legions of fans, Omega did what any good brand should: they listened .

If these updates look vaguely familiar to Speedy die-hards, that’s because they should.

Think of the next-gen Moonwatch as a more fully realized mid-sixties ref. 105.012, built around a brushed & polished 42mm stainless steel case that’s replete with all the minute details that Speedmaster collectors go nuts for.

Stuff like a matte varnished step dial, “short and fat” pushers, a “teardrop” style chronograph seconds hand (noteworthy for its pointed base) and beveled caseback with an engraved Hippocampus. The icing on the cake is the coveted “dot-over-ninety” (DON) aluminum tachymeter bezel – just as God and Ed White would have intended.

Last year’s Calibre 321 bombshell (also announced on the first ‘Speedy Tuesday’ of that year, for those keeping score in 2022) fuelled plenty of fresh speculation: would the next-generation Moonwatch also be fitted with this movement? Would it cost over $10,000 as well? This new reference puts both of those concerns to rest, as Omega is outfitting with the new Moonwatch calibre 3861, a hand-wound mechanical chronograph movement that we’ve already seen in two special edition modern Speedmasters: the 2019 Apollo 11 50th Anniversary in steel , and the more recently introduced 50th Anniversary Silver Snoopy edition – an endlessly charming release we called “the feel-good watch of 2020.” That leaves the 321 relegated to more premium special edition Speedmasters, and the 3861 as the new choice for space use.

In both instances, Omega Caliber 3861 is noteworthy for its respect of the lineage of hand-wound Speedmaster movements, while mixing in a more artful degree of machine finishing as well as Omega’s latest movement technologies like a free-sprung balance with an anti-magnetic silicon hairspring (rated resistant to up to 15,000 Gauss). Perhaps more importantly though, the Moonwatch was the last modern Omega property not to be powered by a fully METAS-certified Master Chronometer movement – a detail which is now all but corrected. It would be safe to consider this a more than worthy successor to the long-running cal. 1861 depended upon by NASA – a movement which itself was direct descendant of the original cal. 321 powering the Speedmaster in its earliest space-faring days.

Perhaps the biggest visual indicator that this is not a cal. 1861 Speedmaster, is the bracelet – which is still the brushed five-link design (with the center links flanked by a row of polished outer rings) that should be familiar to any Speedmaster owner. But a closer look reveals the sandwiched center link is now roughly the same size as the two outer links – a design trait shared by the 2019 Apollo 11 50th Anniversary Speedmaster in Moonshine gold , as well as on the late-sixties Speedmasters this reference paid homage to.

Like the outgoing core Speedmaster Professional variants, the next-gen Moonwatch is comprised of multiple key references, starting with ref. 310.30.42.50.01.001 which is the most classic of the updates, featuring a painted dial elements with a hesalite crystal (the original flight-qualified specification by NASA), and the new bracelet for a price of 5,800 CHF – a roughly 20% increase over the existing 1861 hesalite variant. That price jumps to 6,600 CHF for ref. 310.30.42.50.01.002 which is the slightly more luxe variant, characterized by an applied logo, exhibition sapphire caseback and a box sapphire crystal. Both references are also available for the first time sans bracelet, on Omega’s excellent nylon strap, for the starting prices of 5,500 CHF (hesalite ref. 310.32.42.50.01.001), and 6,300 CHF (sapphire ref. 310.32.42.50.01.002) respectively. Omega will also offer an all 18k Sedna (rose) or Canopus (white) gold versions which range in price from 22,800 CHF to 41,900 CHF . All variants are expected to be supplied with Omega’s impressive Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch presentation box and have a five year warranty. Back-to-back holes-in-one: U.S. Senior Open golfer achieves ‘out-of-body’ feat

One minute, Frank Bensel Jr. thought he hit a nice 6-iron. About 15 minutes later, he pulled off perhaps one of the rarest feats in golf history.

Bensel, a 56-year-old teaching pro based out of New York and Florida, made back-to-back holes-in-one in the U.S. Senior Open on Friday, carding two straight 1s on Newport (R.I.) Country Club’s fourth and fifth holes.

According to the United States Golf Association, the two aces are the first consecutive holes-in-one in USGA history.

Newport, host of the first U.S. Open in 1895, is a place loaded with history. It also features rare back-to-back par 3s on its front nine, a quirk of a club that dates back to being one of the five founding member clubs of the USGA.

Bensel hit a knock-down 6-iron into the 173-yard fourth hole, originally believing the ball settled on the front of the green. He didn’t know it found the cup until hearing the cheer from some green side spectators.

On the 202-yard fifth, he hit 6-iron again, seeing the ball find the green and roll along. He felt his heart skip a beat.

“I was kidding around, like, okay, now let’s go for another one, and it happened to go in,” Bensel said afterward. “Everybody just couldn’t believe it. We all went nuts.”

Having shot a 5-over 75 in the tournament’s first round Thursday, Bensel needed something incredible to happen in Friday’s second round to have any chance of making the cut. He couldn’t have ever imagined such a turn of events as what occurred, though. He said the thought of back-to-back 1s never crossed his mind during practice rounds.

The two aces were, as Bensel put it, “an out-of-body experience” — one he ended up having trouble coming down from. He bogeyed the next four straight holes and finished with a 4-over 74.

“The second one — I just couldn’t believe it,” Bensel said later. “To even think that that could happen was amazing.”

Bensel’s 14-year-old son, Hagen, was alongside him for the moment as his father’s caddie.

Bensel works as a teaching pro at Century Country Club in Purchase, N.Y., and Mirasol Golf Club in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. He is making his seventh major appearance, having previously played in three PGA Championships, the 2009 U.S. Open and two Senior PGA Championships. He said Friday’s aces were the 13th and 14th of his playing career.

The only good reason to add busy, cluttered slides to your presentation.

We’ve all seen cringe-worthy PowerPoint slides so cluttered with information that they’re nearly impossible to read. You know the ones. The text is reduced to 9-point or 12-point font to squeeze everything in.

Busy slides frustrate the audience because of a concept called ‘cognitive load.’ Too much text, too many numbers, and too many graphs overwhelm our ability to process and retain information.

Effective presenters avoid text-heavy slides. Instead, they favor clean, minimalist designs that are attractive and easy to read. However, there is one reason—and one reason only—to include a busy slide in a persuasive presentation:

Add a busy slide to a presentation only when you intend to overwhelm your audience.

In other words, a slide could contain a mountain of information because it is not meant to be read, consumed, and digested. It’s there to stress a point.

For example, in March, the National Association of Realtors agreed to a massive $418 million settlement over commissions that home buyers and sellers pay to real estate agents in the U.S. Since the settlement might convince prospective home buyers to negotiate lower commissions, real estate agents have had to turn up their persuasive skills to articulate the value they provide.

Recently, Realtor.com launched a digital and print campaign to demonstrate the value agents bring to the transaction. One ad fills the entire length of a standard newspaper. The headline reads:

So, you’re ready to buy a home. Here’s the next 111 to-dos.

The point of the ad is that home buyers need support. The implication is that you can try to accomplish all the tasks yourself—researching, preparing financial documents, making offers, and considering legal protections. Or you can make just one decision: find a buyer’s agent.

Realtors making presentations to win over clients would be well served to include such a slide—one that's so dense it's almost illegible without a magnifying glass.

There are times when the intentional use of busy slides supports the argument.

Take Apple, for example. The company’s product launches are notable for minimalist and visually appealing slides that contain more photos and images than text.

However, in June, when Apple unveiled new products, features and plans to put artificial intelligence in every corner of its iPhone, the company's speakers intentionally broke the mold by including strategically cluttered slides.

For example, after one speaker highlighted notable updates in macOS Sonoma, the Mac's latest operating system, he projected a slide filled with boxes highlighting dozens of other features: updates to Apple’s browser, Safari, new gaming titles, iPhone mirroring on the desktop, and much more.

The slide only stayed up for 20 seconds. It was far too little time to read everything, but that’s the point—it was intentionally cluttered to put an exclamation point on the product announcement.

The intentional use of clutter is as much of an art as the deliberate use of white space. So get busy, but only when the time is right.

What do you do with your wood Omega presentation boxes?

I'm not normally a presentation box kind of person. When I watch a review on YouTube I normally skip over the box part and get right to the watch. However, the newer wood Omega presentation boxes seem way too nice to stick in a closet (which is where all my other boxes go). I have two right now and I'm not sure what to do with them. I have a nice six watch display box that I keep on my dresser to store my good watches for viewing and easy access. So I don't need the Omega box to display my Omega's but it seems a shame to stick them in a closet. Does anyone do anything with them other than store them away?  

I keep it in closet, as I have only one watch that wear every day so, so box is not so practical to use daily.  

It is a nice touch, I prefer wooden boxes because they last.  

Definitely too nice to throw away but I haven't figured how/where to display mine, so it is stored in a cupboard.  

I don't have the wooden one. I have the old red box which disintegrates more every year. And the Olympic box. Also and IWC and TAG box. I don't have a enough space to line them up and store watch in.

It goes into a large drawer with all the other boxes, sleeves etc and each box contains all paperwork pertaining to that watch from hang tags to receipts.  

Keep them for resale purposes down the road.  

Shove it into the back of the cupboard since I'm a hoarder. Good for keeping the documents, receipt, spare links, straps, etc.  

In the closet with their many friends, unfortunately. Already have too much clutter in my home office, bedroom, etc., according to my lovely wife...

Both of my boxes have the plastic removed. The button has not tarnished.  

I only have 2 watches with nice boxes. I might put them on my home office shelves.  

I keep mine on my dresser near my other multi watch storage boxes and my winder. I still use the box to store my SMP when I'm not wearing it. Aside from my winder (which I rarely use), its the nicest watch box I have.

On a bookshelf in my home office next to a globe.  

When I first got them I was really proud so I taped one to my dashboard because I wanted to show women that I was more than just my reliable commuter car and show cops that I was classy if I got pulled over. I put the other on a shelf above my desk at work to make coworkers impressed or resentful. But after my GF got upset at the attention I was getting from women, a cop told me it was a visual obstruction, and a buddy at work pulled me aside to explain my behavior was uncouth, now I just keep them around the house in places I can see them and feel good when I am unlikely to be wearing them. For me this means one in the kitchen and one in the bathroom as I usually do not wear watches when showering, doing dishes, cooking, cleaning, etc. It's hard to find good spots because they take up so much space without getting creative, though. I get why most people keep them in the closet.  

I don't have this dilemma with my Rolex boxes. I'm happy to store those away until I sell the watch.

I was just curious regarding this...I acquired my Omega Speedmaster Pro with its presentation box set new from an AD in 2015 [pictured below]...and had believed that the presentation box set had been around for a year or two prior to 2015. Sold the presentation suitcase and all the paraphernalia for $400, would have much preferred a much smaller suitcase.  

Can see how some don’t want the big box, I didn’t want it either. ( more for the OP that I replied to as they are one that calls for omega to release the watch that was released in 1965-7 over and over again. Last week he was leaving Omega because the 321 wasn’t going to be in the 50th anniversary LE that’s yet to be announced ) But there is a constant wish for Omega to return to the past. That’s not how the marketing machine of the Swiss Watch industry works. Every reissue of any company has been same same but a little different. ( this will run out soon ) The 321 will be nothing more but a cash in on the people willing to drop way $25K+ on a speedmaster 321. Omega wants the money the dealers are taking nothing more nothing less ( mark my words ) The same as why the little watchmaker is being squeeze out so you have to have your watch serviced by Omega it’s all about money wherever they can get it. Why are many brands setting up there own vintage section. $$ ( It’s the guys like @Robert-Jan and the Fratello team that have our back with the ST releases )

Sergei Ryakhovsky (Sergei Vasilyevich Ryakhovsky) a Soviet-Russian serial killer known as the Balashikha Ripper and The Hippopotamus. Ryakhovsky was convicted for the killing of nineteen people in the Moscow area between 1988 and 1993. Ryakhovsky's mainly stabbed or strangulated his victims, he mutilated some bodies, mainly in the genital area. Allegedly Ryakhovsky carried out necrophilic acts on his victims and stole their belongings. Ryakhovsky standing 6’5" tall and weighting 286 pounds, gaining him the nickname, The Hippo. Sergei Ryakhovsky died on January 21st 2005 from untreated tuberculosis while serving his life sentence in prison.
