Pakistan’s Defence Day: A Tale of Courage and Heroism

english essay on defence day

In the hardest of times, living nations emerge stronger and more resilient. When the enemy threatened our survival in the 1965 war, the Pakistani people stood steadfast and resolute. To this date, every year on September 6th, Pakistan celebrates Defence Day to honour Pakistan’s successful defence against India, which marked the end of the 1965 war.

The entire world has watched the Pakistani nation’s devotion and tremendous sacrifices in standing firm with its military forces during difficult times. So, on this day, the entire nation honours the Ghazis and Shuhada who fulfilled their responsibilities to defend the motherland.

In addition, the Pakistani armed forces personified the spirit of bravery and selfless sacrifice in defending the country’s territorial boundaries. Thus, we pay homage to the valiant Shuhada who gave their precious lives in order to defend their country.

What Happened on September 6, 1965?

On September 6, 1965, the Indian army crossed Pakistan’s international borders without a formal declaration of war.  They targeted Lahore, Sialkot, and the desert areas of Sindh. The war lasted until September 22, 1965, when both sides agreed to a UN-supervised cease-fire.

The Lahore Offensive

The Indians crossed the international boundary of West Pakistan at 3 a.m. on September 6, 1965, and launched a three-pronged onslaught against Lahore. On the Punjabi plains, there was a fierce tank battle. The domestic Indo-Pak dispute escalated into an international conflict, raising concerns among superpowers.

This action by India was a clear violation of international law, the United Nations Charter, and principles of civilized behaviour among countries. In its arrogant aim to conquer the region, India tossed aside its international commitments.

The Indian invasion of Lahore was repulsed, and the invaders suffered terrible losses. With the assistance of the Pakistan Air Force, the Pakistan Army’s ground defence troops were able to delay and then repel the Indian attack.

The Sialkot Invasion

On September 8, exactly two days after the Lahore attack, India launched its main attack against Sialkot, employing its armoured division and other strike formations. The largest tank battles since World War II took place during this seventeen-day conflict.

India suffered from major casualties in this war. Pakistan repelled an invasion of its territory by an enemy four times its size, and the entire nation rose to the occasion with strong resolve.

Every kid, man, and woman contributed to the war effort, whether it was to raise funds, train as civilian guards, or work as nurses in hospitals.

How Did the War Come to an End?

The United Nations led the main diplomatic effort to end the conflict, and a truce was declared on September 23, 1965. The events that took place are as follows:

  • During the Indo-Pak War, the United States stopped military supplies to both sides.
  • The Soviet Union and the United States established a united stance to prevent the war within the subcontinent from escalating into global warfare.
  • China threatened to interfere and promised Pakistan military assistance.
  • Both the Soviet Union and the United States pressured the United Nations to negotiate a rapid ceasefire in order to keep China out of this conflict.

The Soviet Union, which had remained neutral during India’s and Pakistan’s conflict, then acted as a mediator in Tashkent. On December 8, a Soviet government communiqué formally stated that Indian Prime Minister Shastri and Pakistani President Ayyub Khan would meet in Tashkent on January 4, 1966.

The USSR’s efforts at mediation led to the conclusion of the war, and a peace treaty was signed in Tashkent.

The Martyrs of the 1965 War

So many people have lost their lives fighting for our country in this war. However, 11 of the soldiers showed extraordinary heroism and were awarded the Nishan-e-Haider. Major Aziz Bhatti won the highest Nishan-e-Haider award for his exceptional role in defending the Bedian region of Lahore in 1965.

How is Defence Day Celebrated in Pakistan?

Every year, Pakistan celebrates this day and pays tribute to the Shuhada with great zeal and zest. The multiple ways we honour the sacrifices of our brave heroes are as follows:

‘Change of Guards’ Ceremony

The ‘change of guards’ ritual occurs every 6th of September at Mizar-e-Qaid and Iqbal’s mausoleum. The new cadets of the Pakistani Army replace their comrades on guard duty.

The Pakistan Army displays its heaviest weaponry, including tanks, missiles, and aircraft, each year as part of the celebrations on Defence Day. The parades and air shows occur across many cities in Pakistan.

In addition to attending the parades in person, you should watch the Defence Day events in Pakistan live from the comfort of your own home. All major news channels are broadcasting live coverage of the events. To maintain the spirit of sacrifice and patriotism, special documentaries featuring officers who are either active-duty or retired are broadcast.

Pakistan: A More Powerful Nation after the 1965 War

Pakistan emerged from the September 1965 war with India as a strong and self-assured country, proud of itself and its military capabilities. We stood as one nation.

With the assistance of the government, Pakistan’s Armed Forces repulsed India’s naked aggression across the international border. We forced them to accept a truce, return to the negotiating table, and quit each other’s territory. It was certainly the greatest hour of glory, and a day to remember for future generations of civilians and soldiers.

Defence Day: a story of courage and bravery

September 6, 2020

english essay on defence day

On 6th September, India’s attack against Lahore was held and beaten back with heavy losses to the attackers. The Pakistan Army units defending on the ground, supported by the Pakistan Air Force were able to blunt the Indian offensive and roll it back. Two days later on 8th September, India launched its main attack against Sialkot using its armoured division and other strike formations. What ensued has been described as the largest tank battle since the Second World War. It was a hard and bitter struggle fought over many days and night’s resulting in casualties on both sides. In the end the Indian main attack was held and severely mauled. Its armoured division was force to withdraw owing to very high losses in men and material. South of Lahore, Pakistan launched its own counter attack and captured Indian areas of Khem Karan and beyond. This posed a serious threat to the rear of Indian troops facing Lahore.During 6th and 7th September, Pakistan Air Force had also proved its mettle by continuous air attacks from Pathankot to Agra; for the loss of only 06 aircraft, PAF had destroyed 50 enemy aircraft on ground and in the air, and damaged 08, not counting the undermined losses inflicted by PAF’s night bombing.

On naval front, despite numerical less in size Pakistan Navy (PN) conducted a number of operations for creating strategic deterrence and offering a befitting response to Indian Navy. The prowess exhibited by PN ensured that Pakistani waters and sea lanes remain operational for ships coming to Pakistani ports. Pakistan Navy had played its part by launching a successful ‘Operation Dwarka’, vehemently destroyed the Indian Radar system which was guiding Indian Air Force to launch attacks against Pakistan. The core objective of ‘Dwarka’ was multi-fold in effect as it was not only aimed at destruction of the radar but to provoke Indian warships stationed at erstwhile Bombay (now Mumbai) port to come to the Arabian Sea where Pakistani submarine “Ghazi” was prowling and waiting to engage enemy’s ships namely INS Vikrant and INS Mysore to dock out and get destroyed. This manoeuvre had adversely affected the Indian Navy’s operational plans .Operation Dwarka was launched on 8th September and the bombardment on identified targets was completed in merely four minutes.

Having transcendence in operational preparedness, Pakistan navy is no less at meeting the regional and international maritime security obligations. Post 9/11 maritime security operations were being conducted in Arabian Sea and Indian Ocean Region, Pakistan Navy being part of Coalition Maritime Campaign Plan under UN mandate, has actively participated in maritime security and counter-piracy operations. Though a small naval force, Pakistan Navy’s share has remained highest at maritime security campaign after United States. As a result of these collaborative efforts, the maritime zones of the region where merchant ships had to pay war risk surcharge due to piracy, have been excluded from danger zone. Enhancing these initiatives further, Pakistan Navy instituted Regional Maritime Security Patrols (RMSP), an initiative to continue support to uphold international efforts in the region. The main purpose to establish RSMP, is to ensure maritime security at sea for protection of domestic and international trade. Thus, contribution at large is the manifest projection of Pakistan as a state shouldering regional and international maritime commitments.

To sum up, this Defence Day is a day to pledge that Pakistani nation will always remember the sacrifices of its Armed Forces by honouring the martyrs while acknowledging their courage and fighting spirit. This Day should be a day of thanksgiving and the whole nation should pray for the safety and solidarity of Pakistan and also that God gives us the strength, courage and determination, to protect and safeguard at all costs, the freedom and honour of our motherland.

The Significance & Importance

Defence Day honors the national heroes of Pakistan who defended the country from India’s surprise attack. The Pakistan military made history in defending not only the areas attacked but also in protecting the lives and homes of the civilians.

India ‘s hostility against Pakistan’s border without a formal announcement of war had hugely cost it. It lost 1616 sq. miles of territory to Pakistan, as compared to 446 sq. miles of Pakistan’s undefended territory. 20 senior officers, 19 junior commissioned officers, 569 other ranks, several tanks, and lots of advanced armories were captured by the Pakistan Army – thus making September 6 an important day in the history of Pakistan.

Despite the surprise attack without any declaration of war, Pakistan Army struck back at the Indian forces and crushed all their dreams of conquering the cities of Lahore and Sialkot.

The Indian armed forces despite being large in numbers, equipped with advanced American weapons, and making a surprise move on Pakistan – had to face extreme embarrassment in the hands of Pakistan Army. Pakistan emerged from the 1965 war as a strong and self-assured nation, proud for itself and its military.

Defence Day is a day of thanksgiving when the whole Pakistani nation salutes the national heroes and the martyrs of the 1965 war, who turned the impossible into possible. Those men of steel made history by fighting with great bravery and strong faith in Allah. They didn’t let the enemy invade the cities of Pakistan because the love and passion for their people were ablaze.

The day also tributes the Pakistan Air Force (PAF) who played a huge contribution in this war, which was also the first time that the military air forces of both the nations were facing each other. The PAF pilots showed extravagant skills and the best example is that of M.M. Alam, who made a world record by shooting down five Indian fighter jets in a matter of seconds only!

Defence Day in Pakistan is one of the three most important National Days of Pakistan. The other two are: March 23 Pakistan Day – which commemorates the passing of Lahore Resolution AND 14 August Pakistan Independence Day – which celebrates the independence of Pakistan from British-ruled India.

6th September Defence Day – The Pride Of Our Nation

6 september defence day pakistan

Every year, Defence Day is celebrated in memory of the sacrifices the Pakistani armed forces made in the war of 1965. 6 September (Defence Day) is one of the most significant events in the history of Pakistan.

On 6 September 1965, without a formal declaration of war, the Indian army crossed Pakistan’s international frontiers. It was a time when not only our brave soldiers but the entire nation was thrown into the mold of a cohesive unit to defend our homeland, defeating the Indian Army and pulling them back on every front.

The Detailed Background Behind 6 th September

On September 6, 1965, the enemy invaded our borders with a view to breaching the assaulted areas. It’s been a response to stopping Pakistani military advance in India Occupied Kashmir. They were mostly targeting the Lahore, Sialkot, and Sindh desert areas. The war continued until 22 September 1965, when both sides agreed ceasefire supervised by the United Nations.

The War in Kashmir

Events in Kashmir came to a climax, too. Indian Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri added more fuel to the fire by taking measures to further integrate Kashmir into India’s political body and claiming that the Kashmir question occupied a secondary position in effective India-Pakistan relations.

The application to the Kashmir State of Articles 356 and 357 of the Indian Constitution, which allowed the President of India to create and legislate the Presidential Rule in Kashmir, made an attempt to amalgamate Kashmir into the Indian Union altogether.

The Lahore Offensive

At 3:00 AM on September 6, 1965, Indians crossed the international frontier of West Pakistan without a formal declaration of war and launched a three-pronged offensive against Lahore, Sialkot, and Rajasthan. On the Punjab plains, there has been a fierce tank battle. The Indo-Pak dispute at home turned into an international war and raised questions about Super Strength.

Under the auspices of the United Nations, the main diplomatic attempt to stop the fighting was carried out and a truce came into effect on 23 September 1965.

The Inevitable Defence By Our Military

6th September Defence Day - The Pride Of Our Nation

Martyrs Of The Defence Day

Many of our national martyred heroes won decorations for their gallantry and courage. Major Raja Aziz Bhatti was awarded the highest Nishan-i-Haider military award for his extraordinary role in defending the Lahore Bedian region in 1965. He is among a handful of other gallant and courageous military personnel who have been martyred and in other battles and wars given the same honour. In Pakistan’s defence they gave the greatest sacrifice of their lives.

Defence Day—A Pledge Of Strong And Proud Nation

Defence Day is also a day to renew our pledge that we are a powerful, proud country, and that no foreign power, no matter how strong it is, can bully us. Our troops are a sign of all that and much more. It represents the Pakistani great nation’s fighting spirit, courage, and tactical acumen. And Defence Day is the day for celebrating and remembering all that so we can be strong and send the right message to the country’s youth and children.

How Defence Day Is Celebrated Today

Throughout the nation, a number of military parades and activities are arranged on Defence Day. The latest innovations and advancements in modern tactics are seen in military parades as well. Often on this day, test launches of newly designed weapons occur as well. The obvious purpose of these activities is to celebrate our veterans and to highlight our military strength. Our TV channels and social media are also playing their part in that goal.

Pakistan’s Army shows its latest missiles, tanks, guns, army aircraft helicopters, and equipment used by Engineers, Electrical and Mechanical Corps, Army Air Defence, Signals, Army Service Corps, and Medical Corps of the Army.

By going to specific places everybody is able to watch such functions live. These shows are seen on national television channels too. National songs, special documentaries about 6 September 1965, and the stories of those who were martyred that day are seen on television. The details are told about how people sacrificed their lives for the country’s safety and what the burden lies with the younger generation, the children who are Pakistan’s future

The change of guard ceremony takes place at Mazar-e-Quaid, Karachi, where Pakistan Air Force Academy cadets present and take command of the Guard of Honor.

The Role Of Military In Our Country

We should all be proud of our powerful armed forces and their constitutional role in protecting our country’s physical frontiers and defence. We may face economic challenges but we are secured from external threats by what many around the world consider to be one of Asia’s strongest military powers. We pay homage to their sacrifices, as we honor our former war heroes.

But our military not only engages in warfare but also contributes in peacetime to the country. In disaster-hit countries, the powers most frequently carry out humanitarian operations and provide national relief services in situations such as floods, earthquakes, etc. Many of the institutions of the armed forces, such as their schools, universities, hospitals, etc., which operate under military control, often provide vital services to civilians.

Pakistan Emerged As A More Powerful Nation After The War Of 1965

As of the September 1965 war with India, Pakistan emerged as a powerful and self-confident country, proud of itself and its military forces. It was a nation united in the face of India’s threat. For war success, national unity and complete support for the armed forces in the field are necessary. With the help of the government, Pakistan’s Armed Forces repelled India’s naked aggression across the international border and making it pay a price by taking four times more territory than India and forcing it to accept a truce, return to the negotiating table and vacate each other’s territory. It was definitely their finest hour of glory, and a day for future generations to recall the soldiers and civilians of that time.

Each and every Pakistani has this spirit of brotherhood in their hearts, if you dare to hurt one of us, we will all stand together as one country, for we have no predicament of caste, no color of faith among us, we are brothers and sisters standing together as one, under one flag, and when we stand together we can teach you a lesson that you will surely never forget.

How We Can Make The Events Of 1965 Memorable

Honoring and saluting our national heroes is never tardy. At any time, any school or community event can be arranged to recognize all those uniformed men and women who have served to protect our country. We, too, should raise awareness of their significance and activities on social media. Our discussions and talks with family and friends may also include the subject of the military’s significance and constitutional position.

If that gives young people motivated to join the military and serve the country selflessly, it will be a good outcome.

D-Day Landings: A view from inside one of the landing craft after US troops hit the water during the Allied D-Day invasion of Normandy, France. The US troops on the shore are lying flat under German machine gun resistance.

D-Day was the name given to the June 6, 1944, invasion of the beaches at Normandy in northern France by troops from the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom and other countries during World War II. France at the time was occupied by the armies of Nazi Germany, and the amphibious assault—codenamed Operation Overlord—landed some 156,000 Allied soldiers on the beaches of Normandy by the end of the day.

Despite their success, some 4,000 Allied troops were killed by German soldiers defending the beaches. At the time, the D-Day invasion was the largest naval, air and land operation in history, and within a few days about 326,000 troops, more than 50,000 vehicles and some 100,000 tons of equipment had landed. By August 1944, all of northern France had been liberated, and in spring of 1945 the Allies had defeated the Germans. Historians often refer to D-Day as the beginning of the end of World War II.

Preparing for D-Day

After World War II began, Germany invaded and occupied northwestern France beginning in May 1940. The Americans entered the war in December 1941, and by 1942 they and the British (who had been evacuated from the beaches of Dunkirk in May 1940 after being cut off by the Germans in the Battle of France) were considering the possibility of a major Allied invasion across the English Channel.

The following year, Allied plans for a cross-Channel invasion began to ramp up. In November 1943, Adolf Hitler (1889-1945), who was aware of the threat of an invasion along France’s northern coast, put Erwin Rommel (1891-1944) in charge of spearheading defense operations in the region, even though the Germans did not know exactly where the Allies would strike. Hitler charged Rommel with finishing the Atlantic Wall, a 2,400-mile fortification of bunkers, landmines and beach and water obstacles.

english essay on defence day

In January 1944, General Dwight Eisenhower (1890-1969) was appointed commander of Operation Overlord. In the months and weeks before D-Day, the Allies carried out a massive deception operation intended to make the Germans think the main invasion target was Pas-de-Calais (the narrowest point between Britain and France) rather than Normandy. In addition, they led the Germans to believe that Norway and other locations were also potential invasion targets. Many tactics were used to carry out the deception, including fake equipment; a phantom army commanded by George Patton and supposedly based in England, across from Pas-de-Calais; double agents; and fraudulent radio transmissions.

A Weather Delay: June 5, 1944

Eisenhower selected June 5, 1944, as the date for the invasion; however, bad weather on the days leading up to the operation caused it to be delayed for 24 hours . On the morning of June 5, after his meteorologist predicted improved conditions for the following day, Eisenhower gave the go-ahead for Operation Overlord. He told the troops: “You are about to embark upon the Great Crusade, toward which we have striven these many months. The eyes of the world are upon you.”

Later that day, more than 5,000 ships and landing craft carrying troops and supplies left England for the trip across the Channel to France, while more than 11,000 aircraft were mobilized to provide air cover and support for the invasion.

D-Day Landings: June 6, 1944

By dawn on June 6, thousands of paratroopers and glider troops were already on the ground behind enemy lines, securing bridges and exit roads. The amphibious invasions began at 6:30 a.m. The British and Canadians overcame light opposition to capture beaches codenamed Gold, Juno and Sword, as did the Americans at Utah Beach. U.S. forces faced heavy resistance at Omaha Beach, where there were over 2,000 American casualties. However, by day’s end, approximately 156,000 Allied troops had successfully stormed Normandy’s beaches. According to some estimates, more than 4,000 Allied troops lost their lives in the D-Day invasion , with thousands more wounded or missing.

Less than a week later, on June 11, the beaches were fully secured and over 326,000 troops, more than 50,000 vehicles and some 100,000 tons of equipment had landed at Normandy.

For their part, the Germans suffered from confusion in the ranks and the absence of celebrated commander Rommel, who was away on leave. At first, Hitler, believing the invasion was a feint designed to distract the Germans from a coming attack north of the Seine River, refused to release nearby divisions to join the counterattack. Reinforcements had to be called from further afield, causing delays. He also hesitated in calling for armored divisions to help in the defense. Moreover, the Germans were hampered by effective Allied air support, which took out many key bridges and forced the Germans to take long detours, as well as efficient Allied naval support, which helped protect advancing Allied troops.

In the ensuing weeks, the Allies fought their way across the Normandy countryside in the face of determined German resistance, as well as a dense landscape of marshes and hedgerows. By the end of June, the Allies had seized the vital port of Cherbourg, landed approximately 850,000 men and 150,000 vehicles in Normandy, and were poised to continue their march across France.

Victory in Normandy

By the end of August 1944, the Allies had reached the Seine River, Paris was liberated and the Germans had been removed from northwestern France, effectively concluding the Battle of Normandy. The Allied forces then prepared to enter Germany, where they would meet up with Soviet troops moving in from the east.

The Normandy invasion began to turn the tide against the Nazis. A significant psychological blow, it also prevented Hitler from sending troops from France to build up his Eastern Front against the advancing Soviets. The following spring, on May 8, 1945, the Allies formally accepted the unconditional surrender of Nazi Germany . Hitler had committed suicide a week earlier, on April 30.

Climate Change Added a Month’s Worth of Extra-Hot Days in Past Year

Since last May, the average person experienced 26 more days of abnormal warmth than they would have without global warming, a new analysis found.

Over the past year of record-shattering warmth, the average person on Earth experienced 26 more days of abnormally high temperatures than they otherwise would have, were it not for human-induced climate change, scientists said Tuesday.

The past 12 months have been the planet’s hottest ever measured, and the burning of fossil fuels, which has added huge amounts of heat-trapping gases to the atmosphere, is a major reason. Nearly 80 percent of the world’s population experienced at least 31 days of atypical warmth since last May as a result of human-caused warming, the researchers’ analysis found.

Hypothetically, had we not heated the globe to its current state , the number of unusually warm days would have been far fewer, the scientists estimated, using mathematical modeling of the global climate.

The precise difference varies place to place. In some countries, it is just two or three weeks, the researchers found. In others, including Colombia, Indonesia and Rwanda, the difference is upward of 120 days.

“That’s a lot of toll that we’ve imposed on people,” said one of the researchers who conducted the new analysis, Andrew Pershing, the vice president for science at Climate Central, a nonprofit research and news organization based in Princeton, N.J., adding, “It’s a lot of toll that we’ve imposed on nature.” In parts of South America and Africa, he said, it amounts to “120 days that just wouldn’t be there without climate change.”

Currently, the world’s climate is shifting toward the La Niña phase of the cyclical pattern known as the El Niño-Southern Oscillation. This typically portends cooler temperatures on average. Even so, the recent heat could have reverberating effects on weather and storms in some places for months to come. Forecasters expect this year’s Atlantic hurricane season to be extraordinarily active, in part because the ocean waters where storms form have been off-the-charts warm.

The analysis issued Tuesday was a collaboration between several groups: Climate Central, the Red Cross Red Crescent Climate Centre and World Weather Attribution, a scientific initiative that examines extreme weather episodes. The report’s authors considered a given day’s temperature to be abnormally high in a particular location if it exceeded 90 percent of the daily temperatures recorded there between 1991 and 2020.

The average American experienced 39 days of such temperatures as a result of climate change since last May, the report found. That’s 19 more days than in a hypothetical world without human-caused warming. In some states, including Arizona and New Mexico in the Southwest and Washington and Oregon in the Northwest, the difference is 30 days or more, a full extra month.

The scientists also tallied up how many extreme heat waves the planet had experienced since last May. They defined these as episodes of unseasonable warmth across a large area, lasting three or more days, with significant loss of life or disruption to infrastructure and industry.

In total, the researchers identified 76 such episodes over the past year, affecting 90 countries, on every continent except Antarctica. There was the punishing hot spell in India last spring. There was the extreme heat that worsened wildfires and strained power grids in North America, Europe and East Asia last summer. And, already this year, there has been excessive warmth from Africa to the Middle East to Southeast Asia .

Scroll through our updates below to read all the fallout to Donald Trump's conviction - including our reporting of a "40-minute monologue" from the ex-president which contained so many untruths that some US networks decided to cut away.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has said it would "not be appropriate" for him to comment after the criminal conviction of Donald Trump.

Speaking to media, Mr Sunak said he couldn't comment on another country's judicial and political system but said the US "has always been a key partner and ally to the United Kingdom".

He said he'd always had a good relationship with his opposite number, something that "any British prime minister should prioritise".

"It's also not been subject to conclusion," the prime minister added. "You don't know if someone is going to appeal or not, and I wouldn't comment on judicial processes while they are ongoing in our own country."

He said there was a separation between politicians and judicial systems, and we should "let judicial systems do what they need to do separate to politics".

Joe Biden has begun his remarks from the White House by commenting on the trial which found Donald Trump guilty of falsifying business records.

"The American principle that no one is above the law was reaffirmed," he said.

He said Trump was given the opportunity to defend himself, the jury was chosen like any other jury in America and after careful deliberation, reached a unanimous verdict.

The president said Trump would now be given the opportunity to appeal the decision "like anyone else" who has been convicted.

He went on to say it was "dangerous" for anyone to call a trial "rigged" - as Trump has done numerous times - and that justice "should be respected".

President Joe Biden is expected to give a speech from the White House shortly.

It is not yet known if he will address the Trump trial - but any questions taken after may quiz the US leader on the actions of his presidential election opponent.

We will bring you all the updates here.

A criminal defence attorney has claimed she has it on "good authority" that Donald Trump will be sentenced with prison time on 11 July.

Deborah Blum told Sky News the judge would be more inclined to hand down a custodial sentence because Trump has failed to take any kind of responsibility or show remorse for his conviction.

"The judge's sentencing will not be based on contempt, it is more likely he will hang this on Trump failing to accept responsibility," Ms Blum said.

"He has said countless times he is not guilty.

"When somebody fails to accept responsibility for a crime that they have been convicted of, that can and usually is used against them at sentencing."

She said that if the former president was handed a prison sentence, the Secret Service "is prepared" to let him enter a prison - meaning he would be running for president from jail.

"I am not going to disclose my source but I have heard rumblings of this," Ms Blum said.

"But I can't guarantee if that is going to happen, we will have to wait to see what the judge does."

Nigel Farage, the honorary president of Reform UK and long-time Trump supporter, has said he backs the ex-president "more than ever" after his criminal conviction.

Commenting on what's happening stateside during a walkabout in Skegness, Lincolnshire, Mr Farage said the American judicial system "stinks" and is formed on plea bargaining.

He said: "98% of people who get charged plead guilty. They make it impossible for you.

"They say, even for white collar crime, your legal fee will be $3m and it will be 88 years in prison, but if you plead guilty to this minor charge we will let you go.

"I think a lot of what happened here was the use of plea bargaining to get people to say things about Trump that they would rather not have said.

"The judge, utterly political. When you politicise judges, in a sense it feels like even juries are politicised."

Mr Farage then repeated claims made by Trump that his presidential campaign had raised $39m in the last 10/12 hours and quoted a poll by the Daily Mail showing him six points up on approval.

"I think what the Democrats have done through their sheer hatred of him and their twisting of the law is to guarantee him victory," Mr Farage said.

A number of lies were told by Donald Trump throughout the news conference, prompting some US networks to cut away before it ended.

US correspondent Mark Stone  notes lies such as a claim that criminals have been released from jail in the Republic of Congo and sent to the US.

While TV networks in the US are partial, and some always repeat his statements, others threw back to the studio on this occasion.

"The likes of CNN and others came off his speech before the end. They have got to be able to present what he is saying but also counter the lies."

On the claim about Congo and immigration, Stone says that, objectively, it is correct to say the southern border of the US is a "mess", and it has got worse under Joe Biden, but beyond that "he is saying things that are simply false".

"He said Congo is emptying its prisons and sending criminals to the US - and that is simply not true. Statements from the Congolese governments say it is absolutely baseless.

"Experts on the DRC have said that fact is not true."

Other untrue claims

Stone continues: "Trump says that the Democrats will ban cars.

"Of course they won't, what he will do is what plenty of governments around the world have said they want to do - increase taxes on petrol cars to persuade more people to drive electric cars.

"He spoke about crime around the country being terrible. Yes, there is a crime problem in the US, but crime is actually coming down.

"This is all about perception and reality. I have spoken to many people around the country, in rural parts of Middle America that feel New York is a frightening 'no go' zone, but they have never been.

"They are feeding off what they are told by Donald Trump through news channels like FOX, News Max and others."

Dr Laura Ellyn Smith, a presidential historian, tells Sky News that although Donald Trump has been a public figure for decades, "the context has changed" around him for good.

"This is classic Donald Trump," she says. "He came out fighting. The individual hasn't changed. He's concerned about his legacy.

"He wants to have the last word - he even referenced George Washington, who may be turning over in his grave. But the context has changed: Richard Nixon infamously said, 'I am not a crook.'

"And now we officially have an ex-president who is a crook. So this has changed things."

Dr Smith says Trump is "probably banking on the idea that it's not going to really matter to his base".

James Matthews , US correspondent, said the former president's "40-minute monologue" showed a "sense of the Donald Trump strategy" in the wake of his guilty verdict.

"Donald Trump did what he did: a lengthy news conference," he said.

"We didn't hear anything we hadn't heard before. And to an extent, that is a tactic aimed at battering the audience into submission to a large degree.

"When it comes to Donald Trump, the same old notes, but the same notes from which he gets a tune with the American electorate."

Matthews also notes Trump's attacks on district attorney Alvin Bragg, which "goes to the heart of the criticisms and the accusations of political bias".

Our correspondent points out Trump did not take questions from the media - questions that could have been "uncomfortable".
