âBooger-giâ is what the kids call Justinâs bulgogi in The Invisible Boy by Trudy Ludwig, a picture book published in 2013. Justin is new, and when the other kids make fun of his food and his chopsticks, Brian, a shy, lonely white boy who longs to be included by his classmates, decides to leave him a note, telling him he isnât like those kids; heâd love to try bulgogi. Justin, whose food has not kept him from making other friends in the class, starts including Brian in activities based on this act of kindness, and all ends well, all because Brian said heâd be willing to eat bulgogi, objectively an incredibly flavorful and popular meal.
As a plot device in The Invisible Boy , the cafeteria scene works because the structure is familiar â Brianâs kindness is only noticed as kindness if the standard response is disgust. Thatâs because the story of that interaction has been told, in fiction, memoir, and across food media, by first-generation Americans, children of immigrants, and members of various diasporas hundreds of times. The image of a child opening their lunchbox to reveal an âethnicâ lunch and immediately being bullied for that lunch is everywhere, whether itâs Toula in My Big Fat Greek Wedding getting teased for her moussaka, Eddie Huang recalling how âno one wanted to sit with the stinky kidâ when his mom sent him to school with Chinese food, or Margaret Cho joking , âAll the other kids got Ho Hos and Ding Dongs. I got squid and peanuts. You canât trade that shit.â It gained its own name around 2016, âthe lunchbox moment ,â and has become the subject of endless personal essays . Even in the video launching the ânew eraâ at Bon AppĂ©tit , editor-in-chief Dawn Davis said this anecdote was part of âevery memoirâ she ever published by an immigrant, and she has stated plans to launch a column around the concept of âthe painful experience that was lunch.â
The lunchbox moment has become such a touchstone both because itâs recognizable for many and because itâs an editorâs dream. It cleanly illustrates, in personal essays, childrenâs books, or standup routines, how food thatâs delicious in the context of the home becomes disgusting in public, the moment a brown child recognizes this divide, and the heartbreak of the child (usually) choosing to perform whiteness rather than get bullied again. âThe odd thing was that I actually loved Chinese food, especially my momâs cooking,â wrote Eddie Lin about his lunchbox moment. âI just wanted to fit in, like any other kid. ⊠If it was Asian, it wasnât cool.â And while rejecting tradition, religion, or language in favor of white, American culture is all part of that struggle, you canât find a neater, easier-to-digest example than being told your lunch looks gross.
The story of being bullied in the cafeteria for oneâs lunch is so ubiquitous that itâs attained a gloss of fictionality. Itâs become metonymy for the entire diaspora experience; to be a young immigrant or child of immigrants is to be bullied for your lunch, and vice versa. Other food experiences have become almost as common in immigrant literature â the realization that your cuisine has become âtrendyâ ; the moment when a white friend tries to explain your favorite food back to you; the decision to recreate your familyâs signature dish, thereby shedding the shame youâve carried over your cultureâs cuisine â and can be sources of bonding across immigrant communities. If âyou canât be what you canât see,â an oft-repeated phrase about the importance of representation in media, then these stories are allowing more people than ever to be seen. But the âlunchbox momentâ is the anecdote thatâs probably the most widely employed, the background assumption at the base of these other stories.
This story, in which the bullied children age into a world clamoring for the flavors they grew up with and come to embrace the cuisine they tried to reject, is true for many. But in its retelling and fictionalization, itâs been filed down to its most obvious and recognizable parts. There is no nuance to the âlunchbox moment,â and while the trope-ification of these real-life experiences conveys trauma and discrimination to often white readers or viewers, it leaves no room for the people whose lives did not fit that template. Yes, we canât be what we canât see. But what are we seeing? And what do we lose when we reduce our culinary experiences to one story?
âAs a kid, when I started reading Asian-American stories , [the lunchbox moment] was always the part that struck me as bizarre,â said Zen Ren, who was born in China but moved with their family to Dallas when they were 3 years old. Much of that is because Ren grew up surrounded by other Asians, immigrants, and people of color. âIn elementary [school] my closest friends were all Chinese American ⊠so of course they werenât going to make fun of our food,â they said, and as they grew up, they made other friends from different backgrounds who were accustomed to trying new cuisines. âPeople were curious about what I ate or didnât notice at all.â
The lunchbox moment is a story about norms, with the assumption that the person of color is the odd one out â which itâs easy to be. According to the United States Census Bureau , 76.3 percent of Americans identify as White (with 60.1 percent identifying as both White and not Hispanic or Latino). But that doesnât account for non-white people who grew up around others of their background, or in diverse neighborhoods where no one race is in the majority. And while most people of color have some moment of feeling othered or different, it doesnât always happen around food, nor does it happen with the same intensity. âI absolutely never [felt shame],â said Ren. âI felt bad for my white, American friends and the boring-ass food they ate.â
Annu Subramanian seems like the archetypal protagonist in a lunchbox-moment story. She was born in Nebraska to Indian parents, and for about 10 years she and her parents lived in a small town in South Dakota, before moving to San Diego. âMy skin is brown and my name is 21 letters long. I clearly stuck out in South Dakota,â she said. And yet, stories about children of color being belittled for their food never resonated with her, because they never resembled her experience. Her parents sent her to school with both Indian and non-Indian food, and her classmates responded to her Indian lunches with either genuine curiosity or âat worst boredom,â not derision. They even asked for it when they came over to her house. âI never ran into that âIndian people smellâ [stereotype],â she said.
She admits she was free to pack what she wanted for lunch, so she only brought Indian food when she was in the mood for it. âI think if I had been forced to take it, it might have been different,â she said, and itâs not as though she didnât feel different from her peers at times. But she loved Indian food. What was more alienating were the books she read in middle school about brown people feeling embarrassment and pain around what they ate, with the assumption that this feeling was shared by all children of immigrants. âI always believed it to be universal, even though it hadnât happened to me,â she said. âIâm still trying to find the words around it, but I became aware of the lunchbox moment as archetype, so I think I was always waiting for something like that to happen.â
The expectation that being brown or an immigrant in America inherently meant suffering and shame was frustrating to both Ren and Subramanian. â[It was alienating] as a kid because I just thought thatâs how I was supposed to be and feel, because activists [and] progressives were positioned as good and insightful, and if I didnât agree, it meant I was a bad and clueless person about my own experiences,â said Ren. They recalled reading Yell-oh Girls , a collection of essays by young Asian-American women, and feeling like none of it spoke to them. Ren was annoyed that the experiences of a certain group of Asian Americans were packaged as if they represented everybody. âI donât know a single person in real life who felt bad about their Asian immigrant food growing up, just online stories,â they said.
Subramanian recognizes it may have been unusual that her white peers responded to her familyâs Indian cooking with curiosity and joy, but even if her experience wasnât typical, it was still hard to see media that basically didnât acknowledge her experience could exist. The lunchbox momentâs prevalence ânarrows the frames we can use to tell our stories,â she said. âI would hate to see someone who doesnât have any shame around their food see yet another story of bullying because of it, and then believe they should be ashamed!â

Even for people whose lunch experiences did resemble the archetype, certain details were flattened by the trope. Krutika Mallikarjuna, who moved to the U.S. from the state of Karnataka in India as a toddler, remembers her first lunchbox moment. âI would sit down at lunch and I would open up the lunchbox, [and kids would say], âWhat is that weird goopy thing that looks like poop in your Tupperware?ââ Instead of being ashamed, she was angry. âI was like, âHow dare you? This is okra saaru. This is the most delicious meal in the world.ââ However, in the interest of having a less dramatic cafeteria experience, she recognized she had to start bringing a more American lunch, which led to a different kind of lunchbox moment.
By middle school, Mallikarjunaâs mom began making her sandwiches, but sandwiches that in no way resembled anything her white friends recognized. âIâd open up my sandwich and on one slice of bread would just be plain unsalted butter, and on the other side would be orange marmalade with the skin in it, which I fucking hate,â she said. Even when her lunches consisted of âWesternâ food, there was something different about them. But Mallikarjunaâs sandwiches turned into a running joke with her friends, a joke inspired by love, not discrimination. After all, they all clamored for Indian snacks whenever they went to her house. âIâm sure in retrospect there was a little bit of, like, âOh, sheâs foreign,â which is a little gross,â she said. âBut at the same time, we were 11 or 12, so I think I can let my middle school friends slide on that.â They were clumsily curious and not at all interested in ostracizing her, and instead of being a moment of exclusion, lunch became a site of fun and connection.
Others confronted feelings of shame about their familyâs food derived from media and culture, even if they found support (or indifference) among their peers. Food writer Karon Liu, whose parents moved to Toronto from Hong Kong when he was a baby, said he canât remember anyone getting teased for their lunch in his school full of Chinese and other immigrant kids. But it didnât take bullying to make him feel ashamed of Chinese cuisine anyway. âSo much of my feelings toward food were shaped by television and pop culture,â he said. The movies and TV shows he watched positioned Chinese food as âweird,â full of âgrossâ ingredients and prone to making people sick. He began throwing out the lunches his parents packed him, even though many of the kids at school ate the same things, and asked them to cook him more Western food. But he still enjoyed himself at Chinese restaurants. Even with the discomfort, his relationship with Chinese food wasnât black and white.
Stories about white people finding unfamiliar food off-putting, like the scene in A Christmas Story where the family is shocked and disgusted at the head on a Peking duck, and immigrants feeling shame about their food resonated with Liu as a child, but he thinks they may have limited his understanding of the breadth of the immigrant experience. During an interview, he recalls asking Elaine Lui , of Lainey Gossip, if she felt ashamed of Chinese food growing up. âI was expecting the answer where itâs like, âOh, yeah, I was made fun of all the time, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.â And then Lainey was like, âNo, I never resented Chinese food â itâs delicious and my family made me proud of it, so no.ââ Shocked, Liu realized that while his feelings of shame were very real, they were also enforced by cultural narratives implying that mortification and bullying are the only experiences an immigrant can have. âNow Iâm kind of wondering if I rebuilt my childhood memories in order to fit that narrative.â
In 2016, I wrote an essay about struggle and Pizza Hutâs stuffed crust. In 1995, I was a half-white, half-Indian child living in Manhattan, with grandparents across the river in New Jersey and a taste for cheese. In the essay, I am ashamed of many things: of liking Pizza Hut (a chain, even though I was from the pizza capital of New York City), of the Indian food my grandma cooked, but also of not liking Indian food even though it was the food of my family. I wrote about the things that caused that shame, too, like seeing my classmates mocked in the cafeteria for eating âanything other than standard American food.â It painted a familiar arc to anyone who has read a personal essay by a child of immigrants â childhood frustration, navigating the space between two cultures, American prejudice, all bending toward the acceptance and unity of adulthood. And upon rereading it earlier this year, I realized a lot of it wasnât really true.
The truth is I wasnât ashamed of Indian food or my Indian-ness. I was curious about that part of my culture sometimes, but mostly indifferent. I was pretty content in my racial identity, the way one is content with most facts. And I never saw anyone being mocked for their lunch. It wasnât like I was consciously lying through the process of writing the Pizza Hut essay. Instead, not being a good enough writer or deep enough thinker to identify what, exactly, had caused me such distress as a child, I resorted to illustrating my feelings with a more common narrative: the lunchbox moment. I didnât know how to write about being a mixed-race child of immigrants in a way that didnât involve shame or bullying, and the familiar cafeteria scene offered the structure I needed to help my story land. Regardless of whether or not it actually rang true for me, this trope felt familiar enough, and if it was true for people like me, some deep part of my brain assumed it must have been true for me as well.
Reading the essay now, itâs clear to me I was after a sense of belonging â and so much of belonging for people in marginalized groups has to do with shared struggle. Which sucks! We are more than that! But that common experience means being able to say, to people who share parts of your identity, that yes, the white people, the rich people, the colonizers hurt me too. Here is what they did. Here is what they said. This is when the kids bullied me for my lunch. This is when my boyfriend turned his nose at the food my parents served him. This is when they knocked on my door and told me the smells of my cooking were making them sick. And after the description of pain comes the eye-rolling, and then the laughter, the kind that says I know what you know and Iâve been where youâve been and we .
âBelongingâ doesnât mean one thing. Beyond the imperative to fit in with oneâs white American peers and their white American food, thereâs the desire to belong with other immigrants, with oneâs classmates, or with oneâs family. For many, though, part of the desire to share their lunchbox moment isnât just to commiserate with other members of the diaspora, but to tell a story that white people can sympathize with. In some ways, being bullied for your food is universal â who canât relate to the feeling of being taunted for something completely outside of your control?
And most of the time, the lunchroom drama is a story with a satisfying ending for both parties. The food in question is often now more widely beloved, so the immigrant narrator is no longer directly bullied; at the least, theyâve grown stronger and more self-assured. And white readers can pat themselves on the back, knowing theyâre too open-minded to totally dismiss another cultureâs cuisine. Confronting racism becomes as easy as âtry new food,â and they get to be the Brian who shows Justin that not all non-immigrant Americans are so prejudiced. White people, essentially, get to be the hero.
These stories are âsellable to an editor,â Mallikarjuna says. She jokes that white editors love it when a brown person writes about their trauma, whether in a childrenâs book, a personal essay, or an op-ed for a food magazine. If mainstream culture continues to downplay immigrant and POC voices, when these writers do have the chance to tell a story, it has to be a clear, compelling one. Being bullied for your lunch only to grow up and find white people putting chile crisp on everything is a trajectory thatâs easy to understand â and easy to sell to a white editor. Whatâs more, it often operates on a personal scale that makes these issues manageable. The lunchbox moment doesnât require the reader to think about how class, religion, or caste could all change an immigrantâs experience. It doesnât point out all the invisible ways immigrants and people of color are made to feel unwelcome. It doesnât allow for muted or shifting feelings, or the complications of systemic racism. Itâs just the hard clarity of Us v. Them, Shame v. Triumph, a white boy telling you youâre gross and a different white boy telling you he actually likes lumpia. The white gaze expects brown suffering, and even if these stories of shame and bullying are true, they can also serve to enforce that suffering. Suddenly, belonging means catering to the stories white people assume we carry.
With the Pizza Hut essay, I wanted to configure my feelings into a recognizable shape to become part of that we . Part of that is just what writing is â highlighting certain things and ignoring others, shepherding the reader to see what you want them to see. But it was so easy to guide myself into an imagined past where I felt things like shame over my heritage, fear of ridicule, and pressure to be a version of Indian I didnât want to be. There are true things in there: my reluctance to try a lot of Indian food because I only ate it when visiting my grandparents, my frustration with the idea that any one of my identity labels was incompatible with the others, my deep love of cheese. But mostly, I gave in to the lunchbox narrative, and I didnât notice, and of course no one else did either. Indian and non-Indian friends told me how relatable it was, because it is, because I made it into a story for other people. And in doing so, I trampled over an opportunity to expand what we could mean.
While researching this piece, I finally experienced a sense of belonging. I felt the fluttering energy, the urge to shout âme too!â when someone names an experience, but backwards â it was the excitement over not experiencing the thing I thought was universal. And while it is incredibly important to acknowledge the suffering, there are so many more ways to connect, to belong. âA lot of this is just solved by sharing more voices, more honesty, more of the shitty experiences, and more opportunities to demonstrate pride,â said Subramanian. Our relationship with food can be shameful, but also joyful, confusing, ambivalent, and antagonistic. And there should be room for all of it, and all of us. âI never felt shame around my food and never thought to. That story should fit somewhere, too.â

My first sexual intercourse, just before I started college, was unplanned. It would have been largely forgettable if weâd used birth control.
Looking back, itâs hard to admit to my own foolishness. Iâd had the same boyfriend for 18 months. While our Catholic upbringings were a factor in this long period of chastity, my unpreparedness was also due to my motherâs admonition that a girl using birth control is sinning by anticipating sex.
Five years before, my parents relentlessly belittled my older sisters after finding out that they were sexually active. Our household exploded in screaming and lectures on the âtype of girl no decent man wanted.â Drawers were regularly searched.
âIâd feel better if you werenât using birth control and got pregnant,â our mother yelled. âAt least your intentions would be good.â
My sisters gave our motherâs advice all the consideration it deserved, but as a slowly maturing 12 year old, I took it seriously. Desperately wanting to please my parents, I took their words as a viable ethical position.
By the time I was 17, my parentsâ dysfunctional marriage had become a vicious, albeit silent, war. My philandering father often stayed out all night. My mother lost so much weight that her co-workers thought she had cancer. Yet she would stand in the doorway when Mitch dropped me off from dates, making sure I didnât linger in the car parked in the driveway. She had begun emptying my drawers.
I matriculated at the University of California, Los Angeles, a few months after my 18th birthday and about a month after I first had intercourse. I ended up on a waiting list for student housing. Since I lived too far away to commute, I stayed for the first quarter in the home of well-to-do family friends, taking a public bus to school.
The familyâs eldest daughter, Laura, was a high school senior. Grateful that sheâd agreed to share her room with me, I was also indebted to her for her understanding of moral ambiguity. âIâm on the pill,â she said. âYou can think about whether sex is right or wrong, but use birth control while you decide.â
Meanwhile, my irregular periods were usually about 45 days apart, but I hadnât menstruated in over two months. A few nights later, Laura crept into the kitchen to empty and wash a glass mayonnaise jar. The following morning, I peed in the jar, placed it in a brown paper bag and carried it on the bus, perfectly upright, hoping it looked like a bag lunch and that it wouldnât leak or break.
I waited two days for the negative results. Iâd set up a simple cipher for the conversation with Mitch because Iâd have to call him on a very public pay phone. He was a sophomore at a college across town, far enough that there would be a charge for âlocal long distance.â I brought a coin purse full of quarters and dimes.
When Mitch answered the phone, I said, âIâm not going to the mountains.â
âWait,â he said. I could hear him moving across the room, pulling the phone cord into the hallway.
âWhat?â he finally asked.
âIâm not going to the mountains.â
âAre you pregnant?â
âIâm NOT pregnant,â I exclaimed in frustration, my three minutes coming to a close, the automated operatorâs voice giving me my first warning.
A girl standing in front of a vending machine turned to look at me. âCongratulations,â she said. I think she meant it. When she left, I got some chocolate chip cookies with change left over from the phone call. That was the beginning of my freshman 10, the anxiety pounds.
I didnât have a period until the academic quarter was over, and Iâd moved into the dorms. As if all three missing periods had accumulated until the dam burst, I woke in the middle of the night slick with blood. Fearful of disturbing my new roommate, I found a towel without turning on the light and puttered to the restroom. At that hour, no one was in the hallway to see my blood-soaked pajamas. I cleaned up under one in a row of showerheads separated by white curtains.
Multiple thoughts occurred to me: This could have been a miscarriage; Iâd failed my motherâs strict chastity standard; Mitch and I were gambling with our futures.
And still, I hesitated to act. Mitch was unwilling to buy condoms because it was embarrassing. His interest in a girl heâd met at work blossomed, and he sometimes treated me with cruelty, a thing that mimicked my fatherâs behavior. Despite the dysfunction of our relationship and my guilt when I came home and caught my mother searching my bathroom cabinets, Mitch and I occasionally ended up in bed when one or the other of our roommates went home for the weekend. I missed another period.
Sin or not, I was pressing my luck. Now that I was on campus, the student health clinic was within walking distance. I made an appointment for the birth control lecture, a requirement before being prescribed the pill.
At the student health center, I filled out a long, invasive questionnaire about my sexual activity. I found it humiliating, as if an unseen judge was now my in loco parentis. H aving never developed boundaries, I answered honestly.
After completing the survey, I sat with a group of girls watching a film. One memorable scene had a woman talking about how she was never without her âcondominiumâ â an embossed leather pendant pouch, worn like a necklace, which she squeezed open, and from which she pulled a wrapped condom. Tooled leather had been wildly popular a decade earlier, but this effort to make birth control hip felt flat. All the girls snickered, shook their heads â and put up with it. Because at the end of the film, we got what we came for: permission.
Though I finally had monthly pill packs in hand, Iâd been instructed not to start them until the end of my next period, which showed no sign of arriving soon.
Mitchâs parents were going away for a weekend, so we were meeting at their house for our next date. Five days before, I figured Iâd waited long enough. With no way of knowing when my next period would start, but certain that we would have sex that weekend, I started taking the pill. I figured it would make my periods regular, and my constant state of anxiety about the possibility of pregnancy would disappear.
When I met Mitch at his parentsâ house, we had a typical afternoon. A meal, sex, some TV. I started to feel cramps low in my abdomen. They quickly increased in strength. I went to the bathroom, sat on the toilet, and doubled over. A mass of blood flowed out, heavy, full of clots, pocked with fibrous strings.
I wanted to tell Mitch I might have miscarried a pregnancy. That it was in the toilet and I wasnât sure what to do. But Mitch didnât like talking about the female body, waving off what he felt had an âickâ factor. All I could manage to say was that Iâd passed a lot of blood. He stared a moment, shrugged his shoulders and turned back to the TV. I returned to the bathroom and flushed the toilet.
Decades later, I still think back on that moment, my denial of reality. It was clear that Mitchâs affection for me had waned. My convenience as a sex partner was my primary appeal to him. He wasnât someone I could have an honest conversation with, much less a baby, and I knew it. But I persisted in my hope that he would love me again, and imagined a future together. He was, after all, in the model of my father.
Itâd be a lie to say that day haunts me. And I imagine if someone asked Mitch about it, he wouldnât be able to recall it. But I do think of it periodically, knowing that if I did accidentally terminate a pregnancy, I altered the course of my life.

My parents died during the COVID-19 pandemic. My father had been declining for a few years. That, combined with my motherâs increasing dementia, brought my sisters and me into caregiving roles. With our fatherâs death, we were packing up what remained at their assisted-living apartment and moving our mom to more intensive care. I found a box of papers in the back of the closet. During the first move weâd pulled these papers from a safe bolted to the concrete floor, boxed them, and took them with us. Now, I was flipping through them.
âMom and Dadâs wedding certificate,â I said. None of us had ever seen it. My sisters peered over my shoulders. âApril 18, 1954.â Four months before my oldest sister was born.
Weâd always been told our parents were married in September 1953.
All of us were coming to the same realization at once. That was why theyâd been married in the rectory rather than the church, our mother in a blue tailored suit.
âIâm so angry,â my second sister said, visibly shaking. âIâm not kidding, Iâm mad.â Our parents had been cruelest to her, telling her that, having slept with her boyfriend, he would then bring his friends over to have sex with her in front of him.
There was no way to talk with our mother about this. Deep into her dementia journey, she was forgetting our names. Our sister conversation pinged. Was this purely hypocrisy? Did our parents think they were doing us a favor, hoping to shame us into not doing what they did? The only lesson Iâd learned was how to lack agency.
An old joke of my motherâs came back.
âYou can eat an apple for birth control.â
âBefore or after?â
âInstead of.â

My sexual decisions were not my parentsâ to make. Nor did they belong to the university with its lecture, invasive questionnaire, and film. And though the country should have progressed on the matter in the decades since then, the U.S. is now hurling toward a dystopian invasion of womenâs privacy and negation of their autonomy.
My adult career choices always had me working with teens, first as a teacher and later as a high school librarian. When I read â Girls & Sexâ by Peggy Orenstein to see if it was a fit for our library collection, I wasnât surprised to learn that research shows teens who take purity pledges are more likely to get pregnant than those who donât.
Along with other informative sex ed titles, I featured the book in my library and reviewed it on my school library blog because I am certain of this: Shame is no more an effective method of birth control than it ever was. Girls should know that the only permission they need is their own.
