Some people think the increasing business and cultural contact between countries brings many positive effects. Others say it causes the loss of national identities.

Discuss both view and give your opinion.

SAMPLE ESSAY BAND 8+

The growing international trade activities and interactions among countries has boosted economic development and better cross-cultural understanding on a global scale. However, some people argue that such developments are the biggest culprit behind the degradation of cultural identity in many countries.

On the one hand, there is no question that many developing countries have experienced  a surge in employment opportunities  and  unparalleled economic gains  by virtue of globalization. While businesses can  reap the benefits  from drop in trade barriers such as reaching potential customers  beyond national borders , competent employees would be able to work overseas in multinational corporates. Furthermore, globalization has also encouraged the tourism industry; thereby, promoting a better understanding of other cultures. Experiencing different ways of life, discovering new food and customs and visiting cultural sites will eventually help people gain their knowledge bank and respect for other cultures.

On the other hand, the general complaint about globalization is that it represents  a deadly threat to the national culture . The constant stream of marketing campaigns by international firms has led to  the dominance of certain eating habits  and fashion trends, whereas the traditional lifestyles become less favorable amongst young generations. In addition, there is mounting evidence that a large number of minority languages are  on the verge of extinction  as people prefer to conduct businesses and communicate in widely used tongues like English or Chinese.

In conclusion, although globalization may result in a certain loss of cultural identities, there are still more benefits of increasing trade and cross-cultural activities among countries. From a broad perspective, international business should be regarded as a positive development and encouraged by all nations.

One of the major disadvantages is the widening gap between the rich and the poor, both within and among countries. This has led to increased inequality and social unrest in many parts of the world. In my opinion, while globalisation has brought about numerous benefits, such as economic growth and technological advancements, the negative consequences cannot be overlooked. It is essential for policymakers and stakeholders to address the challenges posed by globalisation and work towards creating a more equitable and sustainable global economy. This can be achieved through the implementation of policies that promote fair trade, protect workers’ rights, and preserve cultural diversity.

In conclusion, globalisation has both advantages and disadvantages. For instance, the current war between Russia and Ukraine is causing major disruptions to global supply chains due to the valuable access to resources that is occurring during this conflict. Another downside is that it often leads to the exacerbation of income inequality, both within and across nations. Globalisation tends to benefit capital owners and highly skilled workers, while low-skilled workers may find themselves increasingly marginalised.

In conclusion, I believe there are merits and drawbacks to international integration. Overall, the benefits of economic growth and cultural integration outweigh the risks of interdependence and inequality. Therefore, nations should strive towards integration and use diplomacy to reduce any potential tensions.

To what extent do you agree or disagree?

The pervasiveness of multinationals has led many to question their relative merits. In my opinion, their impact is negative on the whole despite legitimate economic advantages.

Those in favor of a globalised world argue that international conglomerates bring wealth to a country. This is the result of a variety of related effects including increased tax revenue, employment opportunities, and, most importantly, the spread of expertise. A good example of this would be producers of consumer electronics such as Apple. Apple provides jobs in countries all around the world ranging from marketers and factory workers to graphic designers and supply agents. All these employees receive salaries typically above the average wages in a given region, which is then directed back towards the local consumer economy. Such workers are also likely to pick up specialised skills that they can utilize in the long-term and later pass on to others.

Nonetheless, multinationals are negative due to their effects on local businesses and the environment. A good example of the former point would be the rise of fast food chains globally. Well-known brands such as McDonald’s and KFC are in hundreds of countries and provide serious competition to local restaurants. Their ability to offer cheap, uniform meals with limited nutritional value that are very addictive hurt both the health of the local populace and also make it harder for small restaurants to turn a profit and remain in operation. Moreover, such large corporations contribute to climate change by exploiting the use of airplanes and trucks to ship their products globally. Combined with the plastic packaging often employed by these companies, their impact on the environment far surpasses the minor lifestyle choices of individuals.

In conclusion, despite meagre economic benefits arising from multinationals, I believe this is a negative trend due to the effect on small businesses and the environment. Governments must therefore attempt to carefully regulate and balance the introduction of international companies.

Essay 93 – Globalisation affects the world

You should spend about 40 minutes on this task.

Write about the following topic:

Even though globalisation affects the world’s economies in a very positive way, its negative side should not be forgotten.

How far do you agree with it? What negative sides globalisation has?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Write at least 250 words.

Model Answer: [Agreement]

Globalisation exerts effort to improve the global economy and bring nations together. However, like many other things, it has both advantages and disadvantages. I believe that the downsides of globalisation should not be downplayed.

Undeniably, globalisation has taken the centre stage in the success of the world’s economy and it plays a pivotal role in contributing to sustainable prosperity for all. Both developing and developed countries can reap the benefits of globalisation. For instance, developed countries outsource production and services to developing economies. In consequence, it opens up plenty of employment opportunities, and new businesses create higher-paying jobs that give millions of people a far higher standard of living. And consumers in developed countries can also purchase goods and services at a fair price.

But, globalisation also has ominous disadvantages. One obvious disadvantage is global warming which threatens our existence on the blue planet we call ‘home’. Globalization has caused massive increase in industrial activities and motorised transportation and thereby increasing the burning of fossil fuels and the emission of greenhouse gases. Besides, due to globalisation, people’s lifestyle has become less healthy. With globalisation, people have entered into a cut-throat competitive era and this has made people work long hours and choose a sedentary lifestyle. Consequently, several health problems, like obesity, heart disease, for example, are becoming more prevailing than ever before. Last but not least, globalisation has caused cultural convergence, which in turn harms cultural divergence. In other words, it may lead to a loss of cultural identity for many nations.

To conclude, while globalization does have some benefits, it seems to me that we should be aware of its negative aspects so that we can reap the maximum benefit.

You should spend about 40 minutes on this task.

Write about the following topic:

With the scale of globalisation today, it would be of unquestioned benefit to have a single world currency.

To what extent do you agree or disagree with this?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your knowledge or experience.

You should write at least 250 words.

Sample Band 9 Essay

Globalisation has become a significant aspect of the world’s modern economy, with countless industries and businesses expanding in various countries. This has led to the debate of developing a world currency with many people believing it could drastically help further develop economies and assist in the development of many countries.

A worldwide currency could bring on effects similar to when Euro was developed for Europe. Trade could be significantly encouraged, as there would be no exchange rate fluctuation risks between different currencies. Moreover, tourists would not need to exchange money when travelling.

However, there are certain risks to a global currency, which definitely do not make it an “unquestioned benefit”. Countries in debt would not be able to lower their currency value to make consumer goods more desirable, which could develop into a severe economic issue. For example, the US regulated its interest rates to increase the money resources in order to diminish the effect of a recent recession. Also economic problems, such as in Greece, have actually been made worse by the use of the common Euro. If applied worldwide, many countries’ economies could be very similarly negatively impacted. Finally, many countries around the world do not have a stable enough economy to be able to enter a common currency. If weaker countries were to adopt a world currency, this could be disastrous to their economy and to the economies of other countries using the same currency.

In conclusion, the extent to which a global currency would be beneficial is quite low. It seems to me that the risks outweigh the benefits, as if a country were to lose economic stability, the world would be impacted as well. For that reason, I feel that in present circumstances, it is best to have separate currencies to protect countries from economic recession.

Include an introduction and conclusion

A conclusion is essential for IELTS writing task 2. It is more important than most people realise. You will be penalised for missing a conclusion in your IELTS essay.

The easiest paragraph to write in an essay is the conclusion paragraph. This is because the paragraph mostly contains information that has already been presented in the essay – it is just the repetition of some information written in the introduction paragraph and supporting paragraphs.

The conclusion paragraph only has 3 sentences:

• Restatement of thesis
• Prediction or recommendation

To summarize, a robotic teacher does not have the necessary disciple to properly give instructions to students and actually works to retard the ability of a student to comprehend new lessons. Therefore, it is clear that the idea of running a classroom completely by a machine cannot be supported. After thorough analysis on this subject, it is predicted that the adverse effects of the debate over technology-driven teaching will always be greater than the positive effects, and because of this, classroom teachers will never be substituted for technology.
