I have been talking with my P3 and P4 students once a week when we have our live streaming classes and last week I gave them an assignment to give a short book presentation on a book they have read, every week. During our second live streaming class, we worked on the composition An Unlucky Day and the model below is from one of my P4 students.

For this lesson, I reviewed two types of introductions flashback and descriptive and we discussed as a class on the best one.

I hope that all the P3s and P4s out there are making good use of this time. Draw, read and continue developing your writing skills 🙂

Introduction (1) – Descriptive

I opened one eye as sunlight streamed in my room. Yawning lazily, I stretched out my long limbs and wondered what type of day I was going to have. Just as I was dreaming about my mother’s pancakes for breakfast, my bedroom door slammed open and my mother ran in shouting, “Get up! Its 7.10am! The alarm didn’t ring this morning!”

Introduction (2) – Flashback

I stood in Mr. Tan’s office, my knees shaking . Mr. Tan, our fire-breathing principal glared at me with dagger-like eyes, while Mrs Lim, my Mathematics teacher rattled on about how forgetful I was. With trembling fingers, I wiped the cold sweat from my eyes as I recalled the events a few hours ago.

            I jumped out of bed like my hair was on fire, forgetting about the pancakes. I changed into my school uniform and splashed water on my face. I ran down the stairs, skipping breakfast. Hopping on to my bicycle I peddled off.

            When I was about to reach school, dark ominous clouds gathered in the sky as the sun disappeared. Big drops of water fell from the sky onto my face as I peddled furiously. When I reached the school gate, I was drenched! I locked my bicycle at the gate where the rest of the bicycles were and ran into school.

            As I stepped into the classroom, water trickled down my face to the floor. Mrs Ng, my Mathematics teacher glared at me and said,” Go and change now!” I nodded my head and left my bag on the seat and went to the General Office. Grabbing a dry uniform, I sighed as I changed.  Could this day get any unluckier?

            When I got back to class, Mrs Ng asked me, “Do you have your homework?”

“Let me go get it,” I replied.

I rummaged through my bag and could not even find my file. Then I realised that I had not packed my bag this morning! Oh no! Mrs Ng glared at me as I rubbed my sweaty palms on my uniform.

“Come with me!” she bellowed angrily. I walked towards her, trembling, as she brought me to the staff room.

            Mrs Ng opened the door to the staff room and told me to sit down. I told her what had happened and she said, “You should  be responsible for your own behaviour.” She also gave me a dressing down as I hung my head in shame.

            Once bitten twice shy.  After this unlucky day ,  learnt to be more responsible. I hoped never to have  such an unlucky day again!

The Unlucky Day of My Life

 There are days in one’s life when everything can go wrong. He can get into trouble at every move. I had one such day last week. It was. Friday when I woke up at 7 a.m. The sun was already bright. I had to be at the bus-stop at the latest 7.15 to reach school by 7.30 a.m. I rushed to the bathroom for a quick wash and turned on the tap. There was no water, it was dry ! I quickly dressed myself up and slipped out of my house without my mother’s knowledge. Alas! The bus had gone a few seconds before. I concluded as there were no students at the bus-stop. I had no choice but to call a passing taxi. I was lucky to get one and jumped into it. I cheered up thinking that I would reach school on time. When I put my hand in my pocket to pay for the taxi fare, I was horrified to find the pocket empty. I had no money! “What shall I do?” As the taxi stopped at the gate of my school, I met my teacher. 1 explained to him my situation and he was kind enough to help me pay the fare. I was much relieved and ran to the class Then I noticed something peculiar. I was the only student around. “Am I late after all?” I quickened my steps; suddenly I heard a shout “What are you doing here?” I turned back and saw my principal standing. “Why are you late for school?” When I looked at my watch it showed 7.30 a.m. “I am not, Sir,” It is just 7.30 now. I realized that my watch was running ten minutes late. “Your watch doesn’t show the correct time, boy; you better hurry to your class now,” I blushed at the thought of my blunders and cursed my luck. My teacher reprimanded me for being late for lesson.

An Unlucky Day

It was an unpleasant Monday morning and I felt lazier than ever, as the night before I stayed up late to watch a movie with my cousins. “Buzz, Buzz” went the alarm clock, “The time is seven thirty.” It said in its robotic voice. I tried to ignore the annoying noise it created. I slammed it with my hand and down it went on the floor with a thud. Finally; I woke up. It was eight o’ clock. I was supposed to be at school by now! I hurriedly got ready for school but there was no breakfast left for me, as my mother had left for her office! So, as it was getting late I practically “ran” to school, my hair flying, my bag bouncing behind me and my heart racing. Finally, I reached school but there awaited an unpleasant and angry teacher before me. This was the second time I had been late for class this week and the teacher had clearly explained her feelings about kids who weren’t punctual and caused disturbance in the class. This day, which was probably the most unlucky day of my life began with an empty stomach, and with untidy hair and uniform as well as a long unexpected lecture from my class-teacher! The day was tough to begin with, In the next class I was asked to turn in my homework assignments and to my surprise; I had forgotten about them and left them at home! “Oh this is bad, this is really bad.” I cried. This was followed by a whole lot of scolding from my favorite teacher for being so careless. School was; without a doubt painful and boring. To make it worse I got myself detention since I was carelessly chatting with a friend between a lesson! This resulted in my getting back home late. Just when I felt like I couldn’t take it any longer my mom came to me and I could see the worriedness in her eyes, of course she got worried when I didn’t come home the usual time. She asked me “What took you so long?”, I didn’t feel like talking as I was depressed and tired so I went away without saying a word but doing my catharsis by banging doors as I went. My mother was displeased and angry with me. She was mad at me; I couldn’t blame her, I had been quite rude. The fact that she was mad at me didn’t bother me much until I found that I needed her, and I had made a big mistake being rude to her. You see, I love to play soccer and I am an official player in our society’s soccer team. We practice every day but just as I was thinking about going to our ground it started raining cats and dogs. This meant that the only way I could get to the ground (our practicing area) was if my mother drove me there! I had the choice of apologizing to my mom, but I let it go and spent the whole evening watching boring and uninteresting talk shows. After an hour or so, I felt tired so I went to bed early. I didn’t feel sleepy at all, just tired. So, I lay in my bed recalling all the unfortunate events of the day. After a lot of thinking, I jumped to the conclusion that it was all because of my “own” fault, which was being so lazy and careless. I promised myself that I would wake up early in the morning from now on and as for my plans for the next day, I had to apologize to a lot of people and make up for my rude, careless and irresponsible behavior!

                          MY UNLUCKY DAY                           It was a bright Sunday morning.The sun was not too fierce and there was a gentle breeze. It did not seem as though it was going to rain,either. in short ,it appeared to be the right day for an outing. Mary, Christina, Lucy and myself called an emergency meeting and decided to spend the day at the Lagoon. It would be picnic-cum -swimming session for the morning and, if the weather permitted , we would camp overnight and have a barbecue party, too.              We divided among overselves the responsibility of bringing the necessary items. In order to keep costs to the minimum , we decided to prepare the food ourselves instead of buying it. The drinks we decided to buy as occassion warranted.              I was supposed to meet my friends at the bus interchange that was about a kilometer from my home. All dressed for the outing and with a heart filled with excitment , I walked tot he nearest bus stop and i was at the agreed bus interchange in about twenty minutes. One by one, Mary , Lucy and Christina arrived at the proposed meeting place. Then we took the bus taht went to the Lagoon area.              When we reached the place, we alighted from the bus. Carrying all our things , talking and laughing merrily, we walked towards the Lagoon to look for a shady spot .              We has hardly walked thirty meters from the bus stop where we alighted when i slipped and fell into a deep hole . I yelled and scremed partly out of fear and partly because of the sharp pain in my right leg. I struggled to get out of the pit but could not. My friends gave a helping hand but their attempt too turned out to be futile . The pain in my right leg became more and more acute and un bearable. I thought i was going to faint because of exhaustion. For a moment , I even thought that my fate was to die in the hole.              Fortunately, ...

“Ring! ” That irritating alarm clock of mine woke me up at the crack of dawn with its shrill wailing. Cursing, I slammed my hand on the clock and banged it against the cupboard. It immediately stopped. Satisfied, I promptly turned around and fell asleep. “Jeremy! Wake up! You are going to be late for school! ” my mother’s high-pitched scream permeated the silence, shattering all my hopes for stealing more sleep. I glanced at my alarm clock. I was so startled by what I saw that I tumbled out of bed and landed on my bottom.

It was already seven o’clock! I had less than an hour to get to school! I dashed to the bathroom to wash up. To my chagrin, I slipped on a wet patch of tiles and banged my chin against the basin. I felt my tooth break off and tasted blood. Ignoring it, I went to brush my teeth. A missing tooth was better than facing the wrath of my form teacher! I swooped down the stairs like a peregrine falcon, grabbed my school bag and rushed off to school.

I ran like the wind all the way to the bus stop, where I was just in time to see the bus chugging off. Wait for me! ” I hollered, chasing after it. The bus, as if in reply, coughed out a cloud of black smoke and roared off. It was futile to try and chase it. Sighing heavily, I decided to run to school. By the time I got to school, the parade square was deserted and voices were streaming out from every classroom. I walked resignedly to my class and stood outside the door. Bracing myself for the explosion, I took a deep breath and walked in. “Well, don’t just stand there daydreaming, boy!

Get to your seat and take out yesterday’s assignment! ” Mr Lim barked at me. Sighing with relief that I did not get an earful, I crept to my seat and plopped myself down. I opened my bag and to my utmost horror, I found myself staring at a Mickey Mouse book. I groaned inwardly. I had taken my sister’s bag by mistake! Suddenly, a black shadow descended upon me as I looked into the glaring eyes of Mr Lim. “Detention for you! ” she shrieked, and stomped away.

Trudging out of school, I recalled with painful embarrassment of my detention of cleaning the toilet. “Those kids really do not know how to keep themselves clean,”I muttered to myself. Suddenly, I heard a ‘splat’ and felt something warm land on my head. Argh! Bird shit! I whipped out my handkerchief and wiped vigorously at the offending spot. I screeched vulgarities at the errant offender, only to be greeted with another barrage of ‘crowning glories’. I ran all the way home, screeching like a madman. I had all I could take for one day!

Long considered a harbinger of bad luck, Friday the 13th has inspired a late 19th-century secret society, an early 20th-century novel, a horror film franchise and not one but two unwieldy terms—paraskavedekatriaphobia and friggatriskaidekaphobia—that describe fear of this supposedly unlucky day.

The Fear of 13

Just like walking under a ladder, crossing paths with a black cat or breaking a mirror, many people hold fast to the belief that Friday the 13th brings bad luck. Though it’s uncertain exactly when this particular tradition began, negative superstitions have swirled around the number 13 for centuries.

While Western cultures have historically associated the number 12 with completeness (there are 12 days of Christmas , 12 months and zodiac signs, 12 labors of Hercules , 12 gods of Olympus and 12 tribes of Israel , just to name a few examples), its successor 13 has a long history as a sign of bad luck .

The ancient Code of Hammurabi , for example, reportedly omitted a 13th law from its list of legal rules. Though this was probably a clerical error, superstitious people sometimes point to this as proof of 13’s longstanding negative associations.

Fear of the number 13 has even earned a psychological term: triskaidekaphobia.

Why is Friday the 13th Unlucky?

According to biblical tradition, 13 guests attended the Last Supper, held on Maundy Thursday, including Jesus and his 12 apostles (one of whom, Judas, betrayed him). The next day, of course, was Good Friday, the day of Jesus’ crucifixion.

The seating arrangement at the Last Supper is believed to have given rise to a longstanding Christian superstition that having 13 guests at a table was a bad omen—specifically, that it was courting death.

Though Friday’s negative associations are weaker, some have suggested they also have roots in Christian tradition: Just as Jesus was crucified on a Friday, Friday was also said to be the day Eve gave Adam the fateful apple from the Tree of Knowledge, as well as the day Cain killed his brother, Abel.

In the late-19th century, a New Yorker named Captain William Fowler (1827-1897) sought to remove the enduring stigma surrounding the number 13—and particularly the unwritten rule about not having 13 guests at a dinner table—by founding an exclusive society called the Thirteen Club.

The group dined regularly on the 13th day of the month in room 13 of the Knickerbocker Cottage, a popular watering hole Fowler owned from 1863 to 1883. Before sitting down for a 13-course dinner, members would pass beneath a ladder and a banner reading “Morituri te Salutamus,” Latin for “Those of us who are about to die salute you.”

Four former U.S. presidents ( Chester A. Arthur , Grover Cleveland , Benjamin Harrison and Theodore Roosevelt ) would join the Thirteen Club’s ranks at one time or another.

Friday the 13th in Pop Culture

An important milestone in the history of the Friday the 13th legend in particular (not just the number 13) occurred in 1907, with the publication of the novel Friday, the Thirteenth written by Thomas William Lawson.

The book told the story of a New York City stockbroker who plays on superstitions about the date to create chaos on Wall Street, and make a killing on the market.

The horror movie Friday the 13th , released in 1980, introduced the world to a hockey mask-wearing killer named Jason, and is perhaps the best-known example of the famous superstition in pop culture history. The movie spawned multiple sequels, as well as comic books, novellas, video games, related merchandise and countless terrifying Halloween costumes.

What Bad Things Happened on Friday 13th?

On Friday, October 13, 1307, officers of King Philip IV of France arrested hundreds of the Knights Templar , a powerful religious and military order formed in the 12th century for the defense of the Holy Land.

Imprisoned on charges of various illegal behaviors (but really because the king wanted access to their financial resources), many Templars were later executed. Some cite the link with the Templars as the origin of the Friday the 13th superstition, but like many legends involving the Templars and their history, the truth remains murky.

In more recent times, a number of traumatic events have occurred on Friday the 13th, including the German bombing of Buckingham Palace (September 1940); the murder of Kitty Genovese in Queens, New York (March 1964); a cyclone that killed more than 300,000 people in Bangladesh (November 1970); the disappearance of a Chilean Air Force plane in the Andes (October 1972); the death of rapper Tupac Shakur (September 1996) and the crash of the Costa Concordia cruise ship off the coast of Italy, which killed 30 people (January 2012).

An Unlucky Day

“Just leave me alone!” I shouted with tears flowing down like a river. I’ve had a really tiring day and nothing went right the whole day. I was both mentally and physically worn out. I couldn’t take any more and I broke down. It was just a typical Friday but it was somehow unusual because it was the 13th. I wasn’t being superstitious but I always have a bad instinct on 13th Fridays. Since the morning, I didn’t hear the alarm clock and I over slept. When I looked at the clock it was already, 7:20 am so I quickly got up and changed into school uniforms. After the dressing up, I drank a cup of milk and ran to get inside my car. Suddenly, a black cat showed up of nowhere and I just stood there looking at the black cat for some seconds. It took a long time to arrive to school because of the traffic jam and rain. When I got to school, it was already 8:20am. I was late for school. I finally arrived to school but there awaited an angry-looking teacher. I got scolded for being late. When I arrived to my class, my friend reminded me that there was chemistry tutorial. I totally forgot about it during the weekends. I went through the lessons within a short time but I still couldn’t put anything in my brain. “Ding” The bell rang and it was physics period already. As the teacher gave the tutorial paper to me, I knew I was so dead. I couldn’t answer well and I would only pass this tutorial if I’m lucky. But then, luck wasn’t actually on my side. During lunch time, I fall down from the stairs and got a bruised knee. I couldn’t even buy any food for lunch since I had to rest at the sick bay for the whole lunch time. After lunch time, it was English class. Students were grouped for a project and there was a girl I hate (well, not actually hate but more like dislike) in my group.
