Description of My Village

My village exists in a low lying area that has a warm summer and a chilly winter. Mostly I visit my village in summers because of the holidays. Although the village is far cooler than the city during the summer. Also, you do not need air conditioners in a village because of the breeze. In a village you see greenery and almost every household has a minimum of one tree in their courtyards.

In addition, the thing that I like the most about my village is the fresh and revitalizing air. The air gives a feeling of refreshment even if I have slept for 4-5 hours. Most importantly, at night I see and count stars which I can’t do in the city.

Life in metropolitan cities can be exciting and very happening, but life in villages has an entirely different vibe with its countryside atmosphere. The simplicity, peace and purity of a village is wonderful and unbeatable. I come from a small Himalayan village, Lamahatta, popularly known for its beauty. The name of my village is Lamahatta. It is a small village present in the outskirts of North Bengal. I was born and brought up in Lamahatta. Lamahatta is well known for its lush pine forests, vast stretches of Darjeeling tea garden and the views of the snow-capped mountains. It is also a tourist destination. My village remains cool all through the year. The number of people residing in Lamahatta is not more than 1000. The villagers are very helpful. The majority of the women are tea-plantation workers whereas men work in construction. A pucca road runs through the entire village with small decorated houses on each side of the road. I love my village and its people.

I come from a village named Lamahatta. The village is located at a very high altitude nearly about 5000 feet above sea level. Lamahatta is a very small village of only 1000 residents. My village has become one of the tourist destinations because of its pleasant climate and natural beauty. Lamahatta has vast stretches of tea plantations and beautiful pine forests. These forests smell refreshing and sweet due to the presence of terpenes on them. My father used to take me to the village every year during my school holidays. I used to spend the entire holidays amidst the silence of the pine forests in a little concrete house with my mother, father and my brother.

The chirping of birds all throughout the day, and the light cool breeze used to amaze me and freshen up our minds. Here in my village, the houses are beautifully decorated with orchids and other flowers. Life in a village is very different from that in urban cities. Away from the hustle and bustle of the city, Lamahatta has always been peaceful. The people of my village are very helpful and lovable. In the evening, after the completion of work, every woman in the village meets in a small community hall where they have a small get-together. We celebrate each and every festival with great enthusiasm.

Everyone loves their native birthplace and so do I. I was born in a village named Lamahatta located at an altitude of 5000 feet near Darjeeling, the Queen of Hills in North Bengal. 'Lama' in Lamahatta stands for a Buddhist monk and 'Hatta’ means a hut. So basically Lamahatta means a monk's hermitage. Lamahatta is an offbeat location known for its lush green pine trees and large stretches of tea gardens with a beautiful view of the mountains. Due to this, my village has become a famous tourist destination mainly during the summers and the springs.

Life In A Village | Life in my village is quite different from that in urban cities. Here, it is slower and more peaceful. People live together and lead very simple lives. We mostly stay away from the continuous hustle and bustle of urban life. My village is greener and one can feel the freshness of the air.

About My Village

The people of my village are generally tribals belonging to the Sherpas, Tamangs, Bhutias and Dukpas . They work hard every day in order to make Lamahatta a clean, simple place and attractive place to live in. I belong to the Bhutia tribe. In my house, I have my parents and my small brother. My mother works as a tea plantation worker whereas my father works at a construction site. The occupations of the people in my village are plantation workers, homestay caretakers, dhaba managers and construction workers.

Places Of Attraction | My village people, along with the support of the government, have made this an eco-tourism place. Lamahatta contributes a good amount to North Bengal tourism. People from other countries often visit my village during the summer. Besides the natural beauty, the pleasant weather makes Lamahatt a dream place and an ideal place to live in. There are many exciting places for sightseeing here. We have the Lamahatta Eco Park , a roadside garden, monasteries among the woods, trekking facilities to Sacred Pond, the Gari Danda Fort and most importantly the huge tea plantations. My village serves as the connecting route between Darjeeling and Kalimpong . We also have ‘machan’, a wooden watchtower from where we can view the entire Lamahatta. The Eco park consists of about hundreds of colorful flags. My father says that the wind blowing through these flags is considered to purify the souls and minds of the people.

Christmas Celebration in Lamahatta

We celebrate all the festivals in my village but Christmas is specially celebrated with huge pomp and gaiety. Each house is decorated with lanterns and lights. All the kids have Christmas tree decoration competitions among themselves where the best tree decorator is awarded fancy gifts by the other villagers. On Christmas eve , all the villagers meet at a common place near Eco Park where we dance and dine together. I love my village because it is peaceful and serene. Lamahatta holds a number of my childhood memories. Living here makes me relive all those magical moments. It feels good to stay here. The natural beauty of my village always amazes me.

A village is a settlement that has fewer than 5000 living units. A village is called the rural part of the country. It is called rural because it does not have modern facilities like cities. The main occupation of the villagers is farming. They are the primary source of the nation's agricultural production.

Description of Villages

Villages have either tiny hamlets of thatched huts or large settlements of tiled roofs, stones, and brick homes. An impression has been created by artists and filmmakers that an Indian village is a simple cluster of mud-plastered walls, shaded by trees, overlooking the large expanses of green fields with a few people moving slowly and of course, bullock carts. They portray a village woman with a pot on her head and walking gracefully, her skirt swaying gently. The reality is that a village is the hub of nonstop activity, with their stronger work ethics.

Agriculture is tough and requires hard work. The villagers work very hard and are always trying to find innovative methods of growing wheat, rice, and lentils.

The village is important because it is the primary sector of agricultural production for our country. The village is the backbone of India’s economy. My village is a small village with a population of only two hundred people. My village’s name is Bolpur. It is 150kms away from the main city of Kolkata. I visit my village once a year during my Dussehra vacation. I go there with my parents during this time to our ancestral house where Durga Puja takes place every year.

As the car turns to take the muddy road, I can feel the freshness in the air. The road that leads to the village has big trees on either side and they are so full of life as if they are dancing with joy to welcome us to their village. I have never seen such a breathtaking scene. There is a temple at the entrance of the village where often prayers, rituals, and other worshipping activities are taking place.. There is a big pond near the temple and is surrounded by mango trees, champak trees, and a big peepal tree. The smell of the flowers and mango buds attracts everyone’s attention. My ancestral home is behind the peepal tree.

There is a primary school in my village where the village kids study with a lot of enthusiasm. I love watching them, while the classes are going on, but right now for the Durga Utsav, the school is closed. There is a small dispensary with a doctor and a nurse. They can take care of basic illnesses like fever and stomach pain. For complicated ailments and medicines, the people have to go to the neighboring town. There is a small grocery shop where the basic necessities for sustenance are available. Besides the grocery shop, there is a tea stall with some snacks available. The tea stall is the prime meeting point for all the villagers during the evening time, even in other hours of the day the stall is never empty. It is always full of people sipping tea and chatting, breaking the world’s news to each other. There is a post office in my village.

My favorite spot is a small rivulet. I love going there and spending time because beyond the rivulet lay are acres of grasslands and hills. For an artist, it will be a perfect picture to paint. All, young and old swim and bathe in the rivulet. The main occupation of the villagers is farming. Whenever I come to my village, I feel immense pleasure because of its peaceful and serene environment. I get to enjoy some fresh and organic vegetables and fruits here. The people in my village are very helpful and they live in harmony with no grudges. They live like one big family who always takes care of each other. We can hardly find this act of compassion back in the city.

My village is a small abode for happy people. Here they live in harmony and peace. The village people are very hardworking and thus they must have a good source of upliftment. Like the village’s schools and clinics should be maintained and increased in number. The farmers should be facilitated by helping them to leverage their sales, make them notified about the modern techniques used in farming, and give them compensation and knowledge of the true market price of their crops. Thus, I would request governmental authorities to come forward and uplift the medical, educational, and farming facilities in the village.

My village is free from outer disturbances and problems, and clean without any pollution such as air, noise, and traffic. My village is covered with the greenery and beauty of agriculture, and a very big fruit tree forest is located near my village, where many trees of fruits such as mango, chikoo, raspberries, oranges, and guavas are available in a wide quantity. History of Moscow Oblast

The territory of the Moscow region was inhabited more than 20 thousand years ago. In the first millennium AD, this land was inhabited mostly by the Finno-Ugric peoples (Meryane and Meshchera). In the 9th-10th centuries, the Slavs began active development of the region. The population was engaged in hunting, fisheries, agriculture, and cattle breeding.

In the middle of the 12th century, the territory of the present Moscow region became part of the Vladimir-Suzdal principality, the first towns were founded (Volokolamsk in 1135, Moscow in 1147, Zvenigorod in 1152, Dmitrov in 1154). In the first half of the 13th century, the Vladimir-Suzdal principality was conquered by the Mongols.

In the 14th-16th centuries, Moscow principality became the center of unification of Russian lands. The history of the Moscow region is inextricably linked to military events of the Time of Troubles - the siege of the Trinity-Sergius Monastery by the troops of False Dmitry II, the first and second militias.

In 1708, by decree of Peter the Great, Moskovskaya gubernia (province) was established. It included most of the territory of present Moscow oblast. In 1712, St. Petersburg became the capital of the Russian Empire and the significance of the Moscow region as the country’s economic center began to decrease.

In 1812, the Battle of Borodino took place near Moscow. It was the biggest battle of the Russian-French War of 1812. In the second half of the 19th century, especially after the peasant reform of 1861, the Moscow province experienced economic growth. In 1851, the first railway connected Moscow and St. Petersburg; in 1862 - Nizhny Novgorod.

The population of the Moscow region increased significantly (in 1847 - 1.13 million people, in 1905 - 2.65 million). On the eve of the First World War, Moscow was a city with a population of more than one million people.

In November, 1917, the Soviet power was established in the region. In 1918, the country’s capital was moved from St. Petersburg to Moscow that contributed to economic recovery of the province. In the 1920s-1930s, a lot of churches located near Moscow were closed, a large number of cultural monuments were destroyed. On January 14, 1929, Moscow Oblast was formed.

In 1941-1942, one of the most important battles of the Second World War took place on the territory of the region - the Battle for Moscow. In the postwar years, the growth of economic potential of the region continued; several science cities were founded (Dubna, Troitsk, Pushchino, Chernogolovka).

In the 1990s, the economy of Moscow Oblast experienced a deep crisis. Since the 1990s, due to the motorization of the population and commuting, road traffic situation in the Moscow region significantly deteriorated. Traffic jams have become commonplace.

Moscow Oblast - Features

Moscow Oblast is located in the central part of the East European Plain, in the basin of the rivers of Volga, Oka, Klyazma, Moskva. The region stretches from north to south for 310 km, from west to east - 340 km. It was named after the city of Moscow, which however is not part of the region. Part of the administrative authorities of the region is located in Krasnogorsk.

On the territory of the Moscow region, there are 77 cities and towns, 19 of them have a population of more than 100 thousand people. The largest cities are Balashikha (518,300), Podolsk (309,600), Mytishchi (262,700), Khimky (256,300), Korolyov (225,300), Lubertsy (209,600), Krasnogorsk (174,900), Elektrostal (149,000), Odintsovo (138,900), Kolomna (136,800), Domodedovo (136,100).

The climate is temperate continental. Summers are warm, winters are moderately cold. The average temperature in January is minus 10 degrees Celsius, in July - plus 19 degrees Celsius.

One of the most important features of the local economy is its proximity to Moscow. Some of the cities (Odintsovo, Krasnogorsk, Mytishchi) have become in fact the “sleeping districts” of Moscow. The region is in second place in terms of industrial production among the regions of Russia (after Moscow).

The leading industries are food processing, engineering, chemical, metallurgy, construction. Moscow oblast has one of the largest in Russia scientific and technological complexes. Handicrafts are well developed (Gzhel ceramics, Zhostov trays, Fedoskino lacquered miniatures, toy-making).

Moscow railway hub is the largest in Russia (11 radial directions, 2,700 km of railways, the density of railways is the highest in Russia). There are two large international airports - Sheremetyevo and Domodedovo. Vnukovo airport is used for the flights within the country.

Attractions of Moscow Oblast

Moscow Oblast has more than 6,400 objects of cultural heritage:

famous estate complexes,
ancient towns with architectural monuments (Vereya, Volokolamsk, Dmitrov, Zaraysk, Zvenigorod, Istra, Kolomna, Sergiev Posad, Serpukhov),
churches and monasteries-museums (the Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius, Joseph-Volokolamsk monastery, Pokrovsky Khotkov monastery, Savvino Storozhevsky monastery, Nikolo Ugresha monastery).

The most famous estate complexes:

Arkhangelskoye - a large museum with a rich collection of Western European and Russian art of the 17th-19th centuries,
Abramtsevo - a literary and artistic center,
Melikhovo - an estate owned by A.P. Chekhov at the end of the 19th century,
Zakharovo and Bolshiye Vyazyomy included in the History and Literature Museum-Reserve of Alexander Pushkin,
House-Museum of the composer P.I. Tchaikovsky in Klin,
Muranovo that belonged to the poet F.I. Tyutchev,
Shakhmatovo - the estate of the poet Alexander Blok.

The architectural ensemble of the Trinity Sergius Lavra is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The largest museum of the Moscow region is located in Serpukhov - Serpukhov Historical and Art Museum.

The places of traditional arts and crafts are the basis of the souvenir industry of Russia:

Fedoskino - lacquer miniature painting,
Bogorodskoe - traditional manufacture of wooden toys,
Gzhel - unique tradition of creating ceramics,
Zhostovo - painted metal crafts,
Pavlovsky Posad - fabrics with traditional printed pattern.

Some of these settlements have museums dedicated to traditional crafts (for example, a toy museum in Bogorodskoe), as well as centers of learning arts and crafts.

Tending to the Land—and My Grief—on a Taro Farm in Hawai'i

This is part of Travel Firsts, a series featuring trips that required a leap of faith or marked a major life milestone.

Trudging through knee-deep, murky water with an ax in hand was not what I initially envisioned when I decided to volunteer in Hawai'i . I'm not sure what I thought replanting a taro field would involve. But intrinsically, I knew I wanted to give back to the islands.

My cousin Lynnette (who had always been more of a sister) and I initially fell in love with the Aloha State when we visited 15 years ago for her wedding on O'ahu . But since that first trip, the destination played an even greater role in her life, and my own. When she eventually battled breast cancer , Lynnette felt the place had healing powers, and it became the go-to location for joint family vacations over the 10 years she endured long stints of chemotherapy.

It has now been 1,374 days since I—we—lost her. Instead of facing my grief, I've tried to outrun it. Stillness and silence are foes. I’ve kept myself relentlessly busy, a deliberate effort to avoid the pain of my loss. There was always another story to write, another destination to explore, another task to check off the list. On the surface, life has seemed productive and fulfilling, yet just below the weight of unaddressed grief has muddied the waters of my existence. Ultimately, I've learned there's no cheat code: grief eventually catches up.

I finally decided to meet my pain head-on. I said yes when I was invited to join a group of Alaska Airlines employees as they volunteered for the state's mālama' āina (care for the land) program. For the job, I'd fly to O'ahu to work alongside local elders and residents to help replant a taro field. Taro, or "kalo," is a Hawaiian food staple deeply ingrained in the island's culture. Although I was returning for a great cause, it was my first time setting foot on Hawaiian soil since she passed—and my first time visiting without her by my side. I was petrified that all the sorrow I’d spent years running from would overwhelm and devastate me at once.

After a long flight, I touched down in Honolulu . As I stepped out of the terminal, I held my breath, bracing for a tsunami of emotions to overwhelm me. The waves didn’t crash down at first. But reminders of Lynnette slowly appeared everywhere: in the small snack shop at the airport ; along the traffic-dense roadways; and even while walking among throngs of tourists traipsing down a main street in search of food.

When I sat down for dinner on my first night, sleepy-eyed and jet-lagged, I could barely taste my meal. Why was I here? I focused on repeating what would become my mantra: "I'm doing this for Lynnette."

Bright and early the following morning, armed with a double espresso, I began the one-hour drive to Ka Papa Loʻi ʻO Punaluʻu , a three-acre wetland taro farm. Organizers recited an ancient Hawaiian prayer before we were each provided a tool, and told to doff our shoes and step into the frigid waters surrounding the fields. The objective was to walk along the canals pulling our tools behind us. Replanting taro isn't just about nurturing the plants; first, you must dredge the sediment accumulating in the waterways surrounding the field, which allows sunlight to penetrate and nourish the plants. The effort required to simply let the light in was a metaphor not lost on me.

The atmosphere of the lo’i (taro field) was tranquil, even as muffled conversations floated through the air. Our group of volunteers, which also included dozens of University of Hawai'i students, worked separately but in tandem, allowing me to get lost in the soothing repetition of the work. In an area that housed very young taro plants, we used our fingertips to pluck away weeds. As I touched the soil, meditating in the repetitive actions, a fond or funny memory with Lynnette would find the space to bubble up. I thought of what Lynnette might have thought or said if she could see me right now. I felt my eyes fill with tears as my lips twitched into a private smile.

Since Lynnette's passing, I've buried my sorrow beneath layers of constant activity. Yet here, where I felt a profound connection to the land and memories of my cousin, the process felt active. Intentional. In her honor.

Spending a day in these fields, working shoulder-to-shoulder with other volunteers, was a reminder that avoiding grief doesn't foster healing—but there is often catharsis in movement that brings us closer to ourselves, and those we've lost. Walking arm in arm with strangers, shuffling our feed to promote water flow, felt like clearing up pathways to the next phase of my grief. Whatever I was, I was no longer stuck.
