Essay on teachers day for class 5

I love my teacher very much, so I will give her a nice gift on Teacher’s Day. On October 5, my school will celebrate Teacher’s Day. We will have a party at the school. I will participate in the party. I have prepared a word in which I thank my teacher, and express my respect for her. She is a role model for me and I hope to be like her in the future.

I have often thought about what is the appropriate gift to give to my teacher, and I found that roses are the best gift that expresses my thanks and gratitude to her. I will write her thanks for a beautiful card, and present it with flowers.

My teacher has a great credit for me, as she taught me to read and write, encouraged me to practice my hobby, and gave me good habits in dealing with others.

Essay on Teachers’ Day in 500 words

Teachers’ Day is an auspicious day for every student and teacher in India. It holds great significance and meaning. Students across the nation dedicate 5th September every year to honour and express their gratitude towards the mentors who play a significant role in nurturing their minds.

The Role of Teachers

Teachers are role models for our young and brilliant minds in school. They impart a vast sea of knowledge to guide us on the right path and make our future brighter. Moreover, teachers support us during the ups and downs of our academic life, so that we can focus on giving our best. Their unwavering support and dedication to growth are truly inspiring for everyone around them. It encourages students to be a better version of themselves, help others in need, always respect others, and practice good manners.

In addition to this, teachers turn boring lectures into fun learning sessions. For this, they are using the power of technology by including PPTs, video lessons, and active participation of students. They also use positive words like keep it up, come on, and you can do this to motivate young minds against all odds. Many teachers are also their students’ best friends and mentors. Students feel safe to confide in their mentors and get smart solutions to handle any difficulty.

While we are always eager to celebrate the dedication of our teachers, acknowledging their challenges is also essential. The job of a teacher comes with many responsibilities such as long working hours, adapting to a student’s learning difficulties, and teaching up to 40-50 students at once.

Shaili Contractor

Key Points to Remember When Writing an Essay on Teachers’ Day

10 lines on teachers’ day, short essay on teachers’ day in english, long essay on teachers’ day for kids, what will your child learn from the essay on teachers’ day.

Teachers are the closest people in a child’s life outside their homes. Right from the moment they enter school on their very first day till the day they graduate, teachers play a central role in every child’s educational journey. They are responsible for inspiring students and shaping their futures. Therefore, it’s not surprising that children are very close to their teachers and love and respect them immensely. Children love celebrating Teachers’ Day in school. They show their appreciation, respect, and gratitude towards their teachers through various expressions on this day. Schools organise a grand celebration with various activities where children can participate. Teachers’ Day is thus a common topic assigned to children of lower primary classes for essay writing. Through this essay, students are expected to highlight the importance of teachers and share how they like to celebrate Teachers’ Day.

Teachers’ Day is celebrated in all schools to honour the contribution of teachers to the students’ lives. Children will have a lot of ideas about what to write on this topic. There are a few essential tips to remember when asked to write an essay on teachers. Here are some details that you can include:

  • Mention the date that Teachers’ day falls on.
  • Write why it is celebrated.
  • Write why it is important to celebrate Teachers’ day.
  • Describe the importance of teachers in students’ lives.
  • Write about various activities on Teachers’ day.

Right from the first day of school, a teacher is a child’s mentor in their studies, guardian away from home and a friendly guide for life. Lower primary class students are very excited about Teachers’ Day but are just about learning how to put down their feelings and ideas in words. It will help them to gather their thoughts and write them in simple sentences. Here is a sample essay on Teachers’ Day for class 1 & 2 students in 10 lines:

  • We celebrate Teachers’ Day in India on September 5.
  • It is celebrated to show our respect and gratitude for our teachers.
  • It is celebrated to mark Dr Sarvapalli Radhakrishan’s birth anniversary.
  • International Teachers’ Day is celebrated in other parts of the world on October 5.
  • On this day, teachers are off-duty. Senior students come to school dressed up as teachers and take over the classes.
  • Teachers relax and enjoy the activities planned for them by the students.
  • In my school, we also perform skits and other cultural activities to showcase the importance of our teachers.
  • We also have a special assembly conducted by students.
  • We give small gifts to our teachers. I like to make greeting cards for all my favourite teachers to show love and gratitude.
  • Schools across India celebrate Teachers’ day with a lot of enthusiasm and zeal.

After writing an essay in simple lines, students will be expected to weave their ideas into small paragraphs to share their experiences on Teachers’ Day. For this short paragraph, they will have to include more details and facts in their essay, with a small introductory and concluding line.

Here is an example that will give your child some guidance:

From our first day at school all the way through college, teachers are the ones who guide us, educate us, and inspire us. They not only teach us but also make us better humans. Therefore, every year on September 5, we celebrate Teachers’ Day to honour our teachers. It is the most important event on the school calendar.

Teachers’ Day was first celebrated by students and colleagues of the former President of India, Dr Sarvapalli Radhakrishan, to honour him on his birthday. Since then, it has been celebrated to honour and respect all teachers upon his humble insistence.

In our school, we have many cultural activities to celebrate this day. Students honour their teachers with flowers and gifts to express their gratitude. It is not just on this day, but every day, that we are grateful to our teachers for educating us and making us good human beings.

Class 3 students are expected to write longer essays and express their views articulately along with essential facts and knowledge. Therefore, students will have to memorise these facts while writing about their experiences creatively. Here is a sample of a long essay on Teachers’ Day essay for class 3 students:

We all know that Teachers’ Day is on September 5 and is celebrated with gusto. However, very few know that while it is celebrated on this day in India, the International Teacher Day is observed worldwide on October 5. Teachers’ Day in India is celebrated to honour Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, the second president of India who was an incredible teacher. His students wanted to celebrate Teachers’ Day on his birthday to honour him and show their respect for him. However, Dr Radhakrishnan suggested honouring all teachers instead, and his birthday started being celebrated across the country to commemorate teachers and their importance in shaping students’ lives.

The future of every society and country lies in the hands of the children. And teachers are the ones that nurture, educate, and shape the future of these children who grow up and make a better society and country. They not only impart education but also guide children to become better humans. Therefore, every year Teachers’ day is celebrated in all schools, colleges, and educational institutions with fervour and enthusiasm. It is a day dedicated to teachers who work hard to ensure their students learn well and excel in school and life. Teachers have a powerful impact on students’ lives and minds. Therefore they have always been respected and held in high regard. On Teachers’ Day, students express that regard and gratitude through various activities.

In my school, senior class students dress and act as their favourite teachers for one day. They conduct the assembly, take classes, and organise various activities for teachers. We have speeches and skits that show the importance of teachers in our lives. We also present dances and sing songs dedicated to our teachers. In our school, we also have performances like fancy dress competitions on this day. Teachers get a day off from their responsibilities and enjoy these acts. There are fun games played with our teachers in one team opposite us students in the other team. We also shower our teachers with love by giving them cards, flowers, and presents to express our love, respect and gratitude. The day is all about teachers and making them feel special. Though we dedicate just one single day of the year to celebrate our teachers, we appreciate and acknowledge their efforts and dedication every day of our life.

Teachers’ day is an introductory essay for students of lower primary classes. For students, teachers are the most important part of their educational lives. Therefore writing an essay for grade 1, 2 & 3 students on Teachers’ day encourages them to express their love and gratitude towards their teachers. From academic and moral aspects, teachers are the guiding light for their students. Through an essay on Teacher’s day, your child will learn and understand the role of teachers in their lives, and appreciate their efforts in their education. This exercise also allows your child to observe and express the activities around them. Gathering facts about the history of Teachers’ Day will improve your child’s general knowledge.

100 Words Essay On Teachers' Day

In the past, a teacher was referred to as a "Guru" . A guru is someone who illuminates the lives of tens of thousands of disciples. Guru translates to "a dispeller of darkness" in Sanskrit. Guru is therefore given the utmost respect and importance in Indian tradition.

A teacher's direction makes learning fun and fruitful for the student. As dutiful learners, we must all warmly welcome them and express our gratitude for their selfless contribution to educating people throughout life and influencing various students' lives. The annual celebration of Teacher's Day on September 5th gives us an excellent opportunity to spend time with teachers and express our gratitude.

Teachers' Day Essay - 100, 200, 500 Words

200 Words Essay On Teachers' Day

Teachers' contributions and efforts are always appreciated. Teacher's Day aims to recognise the contributions made by teachers. In India, we commemorate teachers' day on Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan's birthday . Radhakrishnan was a man of many admirable traits. Teachers teach young people and students how to be leaders and they cultivate young people's discipline, preparing them for the future. Teachers are perhaps the most crucial character in a student's life.

500 Words Essay On Teachers' Day

The word "teacher" in India refers to more than just a profession. With a teacher, there is an intense emotion. If we look at ancient India, we can see how essential gurus (teachers) were in influencing the views of their followers.

Role Of Teacher In Life

Make learning enjoyable: Along with educating, their primary responsibility is to get kids ready for a better future. Instead of presenting concepts in in-depth, technical lectures, they make their classes engaging and enjoyable.

Connecting to actual events: The children's closest friends are good teachers. By relating various subjects to actual events, they facilitate learning. Using real-world examples, they show how even the most complex subjects can be understood and how doing so would benefit the future.

Motivate Learners: Teachers help pupils develop since they frequently look to them for approval. Compliments like "come on," "good job," "well done," and "keep it up" go a long way in motivating children. These appropriate remarks have great value in their lives. They always inspire us to attain our greatest accomplishments in addition to teaching us. They support us, cheer us on, and boost our confidence whenever we fail so that we may keep trying until we achieve. They constantly show us the ideal course for our lives. They consistently go above and beyond to assist pupils.

Alter the course of your life: It is true what is claimed that "excellent instructors hold the future growth of a nation in their hands". The quality of the education we receive from our teachers determines who we become in life. Children's minds are given data and information to examine the scenario. The most critical skill we acquire from teachers is the ability to analyse what is essential. They fashion an exquisite statue out of an unformed stone. They increase our understanding and promote the proper transfer of knowledge from one generation to the next.

Monitor Progress & Set Performance Objectives: The best teachers always succeed in pointing out to their students how far they have come since the beginning. Establishing short-term goals, encouraging improvement, and maintaining self-evaluation keeps track of the kids' every move and is a confidence builder. Teachers support students by providing them with clear objectives that are doable. For pupils, they design challenging assignments that aid them in resolving problematic situations in life.

My Teachers’ Day Celebration

The 5th of September is designated as Teacher's Day each year to commemorate the birth of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan , a legendary educator in his day. A small celebration for our teachers was held on this occasion in our school. At seven in the morning, teachers' day activities began. The school captain gave a brief statement to introduce the event and discuss the significance of teachers and their role in building nations. The ceremony was opened by lighting a candle in front of Maa Saraswati's statue , representing wisdom and peace. The first performance by the sixth-grade children began at precisely 9:00 a.m.

Sujana ma'am taught me English for the first time. She is very knowledgeable and kind and is also my favourite teacher. I played the role of Sujana ma'am in the annual tradition of students dressing up as their favourite teachers for the day. I hold all teachers in the highest regard.

The Teacher-Student Relationship: Learning from Eklavya’s Example

The teacher-student relationship is a dynamic and influential connection that plays a pivotal role in the educational journey of individuals. One of the most iconic examples from ancient Indian mythology that exemplifies the depth and complexity of this relationship is the tale of Eklavya and Dronacharya.

In the Mahabharata, Eklavya, a young and talented archer from a tribal community, aspired to learn archery from Dronacharya, a revered teacher and the royal guru of the Kauravas and Pandavas. However, Dronacharya, bound by his commitment to teach only royal princes, refused to accept Eklavya as his disciple.

Undeterred by this rejection, Eklavya, driven by his unwavering determination, decided to learn archery independently. He created a clay idol of Dronacharya in the forest and practiced relentlessly in front of it, considering the idol as his Guru. Eklavya’s dedication and perseverance transformed him into an extraordinary archer, mastering the art through self-discipline and sheer hard work.

This story illustrates several facets of the teacher-student relationship:

  • Admiration and Aspiration: Eklavya admired Dronacharya as his role model and ideal teacher. His admiration for the guru was so profound that he sought to emulate Dronacharya’s teachings through self-directed learning despite being denied formal instruction.
  • Self-Motivation and Dedication: Eklavya’s commitment to mastering archery showcases the power of self-motivation and dedication in the learning process. His unwavering focus and disciplined practice underscore the importance of personal drive in the pursuit of knowledge and skill.
  • Teacher’s Impact Beyond Formal Instruction: Although Dronacharya did not directly mentor Eklavya, his influence extended beyond the classroom. Eklavya considered Dronacharya his guru, even from a distance, emphasizing a teacher’s profound impact on a student’s life beyond formal instruction.
  • Unconventional Learning Paths: Eklavya’s story challenges the conventional notion of formal education and apprenticeship. It highlights that true learning can happen through unconventional paths driven by passion, commitment, and a genuine thirst for knowledge.

While the Eklavya-Dronacharya narrative may be a myth, its enduring appeal lies in its reflection of timeless truths about the teacher-student relationship. It reminds us that the essence of learning goes beyond the physical presence of a teacher; it resides in the student’s dedication, the teacher’s influence, and the shared pursuit of knowledge.

The Challenges Faced by Teachers

1. Workload and Time Constraints:

Teachers often find themselves grappling with extensive workloads and time constraints. The responsibilities of planning lessons, creating assessments, and grading assignments can be overwhelming. In addition, teachers often participate in professional development activities to stay current on educational trends and methodologies. Balancing these tasks while ensuring quality instruction and individualized student attention is challenging.

2. Limited Resources and Funding:

Many educators face the obstacle of working in environments with limited resources and inadequate funding. Insufficient classroom materials, outdated textbooks, and a lack of technology can impede the delivery of effective lessons. Teachers often invest their personal time and money to supplement these deficiencies, showcasing their dedication to providing a quality education despite the challenges posed by resource constraints.

3. Diverse Learning Needs:

A diverse range of student abilities, learning styles, and cultural backgrounds characterizes the modern classroom. Meeting the individual needs of each student requires considerable effort and adaptability. Teachers must employ varied instructional strategies and differentiate their approach to cater to the diverse learning profiles within their classrooms. Striking this balance is no small feat and demands a keen understanding of each student’s strengths and challenges.

4. Evolving Educational Policies:

Teachers must navigate the ever-changing landscape of educational policies and standards. Frequent revisions to curricula, standardized testing, and evaluation criteria necessitate continuous adaptation. Staying compliant with these policies while fostering an engaging and enriching learning environment poses an ongoing challenge for educators. The ability to seamlessly integrate new requirements without compromising the quality of education is a testament to a teacher’s resilience.

5. Student Behavioral Issues:

Managing classroom dynamics and addressing behavioral issues among students is another challenge faced by teachers. Educators tackle diverse behavioral challenges in an era where societal changes often manifest within the classroom. Teachers play an important role in fostering a positive learning environment. This requires both pedagogical expertise and strong interpersonal skills, including addressing bullying, promoting inclusivity, and managing conflicts.

6. Technological Integration:

While technology has become an integral part of the modern world, integrating it into the classroom effectively is challenging for many teachers. Navigating digital platforms, ensuring equitable access to technology, and leveraging educational apps require a level of technological proficiency that some educators may find daunting. Teachers face an ongoing challenge to balance traditional teaching methods with technology to enhance learning experiences in the digital age.

8. Cultural Respect for Teachers:

  • In some cultures, teachers are held in exceptionally high regard, with their role seen as a vocation rather than just a profession.
  • This cultural respect can contribute to a positive and supportive teacher working environment.

“Education is the passport to the future; tomorrow belongs to those who teach today.”

Only teachers make children successful in their lives. A good teacher can lead children to limitless heights of success in life. Besides, teaching is a prophetic profession. Because teachers disperse knowledge which is the most precious thing ever found. Knowledge shows us the right path and enables us to distinguish right from wrong. Teachers are more than our parents who shape our minds for success in every field of life. Besides, they only become happy and successful in life if their dedicated students go ahead and spread the name of teachers all over the world through our activities and by reflecting back on all the lessons that we learned from our teachers. Thus, we should follow all the good lessons in our life taught by our teachers.

Teacher’s Day in India is a very important annual event to applaud and recognize our teachers for their exceptional and extraordinary work. The Teacher’s Day is also a good medium for students to express their love and respect for their teachers. It is celebrated on 5 th September every year with great enthusiasm by the students across the whole nation. Teacher’s Day falling on 5 th September of every year is actually the birth anniversary of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan who served as the first vice-President and second President of India and also was a distinguished scholar and excellent teacher. We celebrate this day just to remember him and pay him tribute for his great acts and achievements.

Teachers Day is not about only those teachers who have taught us in Schools, Colleges or any other Institution but it is also about all those people who have ever taught us something valuable.

Why do We Celebrate Teacher’s Day?

As it is clear from its name, Teacher’s Day is a day of Teachers. According to Hindu Scripts, ‘Brahma’ is the creator of the Universe. In the same way, a teacher is the creator of the future of the Nation. A teacher is a person who never leaves teaching and keeps educating the youngsters throughout his/her life. S/He performs his/her duty with full honesty and dedication just to make his/her pupils successful and the success of his/her pupils is the actual success of the teacher.

For a good teacher, teaching is not just a profession, a service or a job but s/he regards education as a pillar of the Nation. We can never get over their beneficences so we celebrate the Teacher’s Day just to pay them respect and make them understand how valuable they are for us.

Origin of Teacher’s Day

Teacher’s Day which is celebrated across the country to mark the contribution of the Teachers and tribute to them is actually the birth anniversary of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan.

Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan was born on 5 th September 1888. He was an Indian Philosopher and Statesman who also served as India’s 1 st Vice-President and 2 nd President. He was honoured with several awards including Bharat Ratna in 1954, Knighthood in 1931, and Order of Merit in 1963.

Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan had also served as a teacher and professor during his early career. He was loved and highly respected by his pupils. He was elected the 2nd President of India on 14 th May 1962. While serving as the President in 1962, some of his friends and Students requested him to celebrate his Birthday every year as “Radhakrishnan Day”, as they wanted to pay him tribute every year for his service and achievements. Dr. Radhakrishnan denied celebrating 5 th September as his birthday, instead he requested them to celebrate 5 th September as Teacher’s Day saying “Instead of celebrating my birthday, it would be my proud privilege if September 5th is observed as Teachers’ Day”.

Since then the birth anniversary of Dr. Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan is being celebrated as the Teacher’s Day. Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan wanted the students of India to understand the importance of their Teachers and always pay them respect that is why his birthday is celebrated as the Teacher’s Day every year.

Teacher’s Day Celebration

On 5 th September, Teacher’s Day is celebrated all across the Nation with great enthusiasm and respect for the teaching community. The most of the excitement can be seen among the students of pre college schools. They eagerly wait for the day to celebrate and tribute their teachers.

Various kinds of social and cultural events and especially acts based on teachers are organised in Schools and Colleges on this day. The preparation starts few days before the Teachers Day. The students prepare speeches and poems dedicated to their teachers and perform them on the stage. They also prepare some beautiful gifts, greeting cards and flowers for their teachers.

Also many quizzes, essay competitions and other such events are organised by authorities. The celebration usually starts with cutting of cake by the teachers. It is not necessarily done in every institution but most of the institutions, Schools and Collages do so. Students also bring presents for their favourite teachers. Teachers accept the gift and respect of their students and fill them with their love and blessings. Students also decorate their School and Classroom beautifully to surprise their Teachers. The excitement for teacher’s day and the love and respect for their teachers can clearly be seen in the eyes of every student.

Importance of Teacher’s Day

Importance of Teacher’s Day in our life depends completely upon the importance of Teachers in our life.

If you are a student then you know very well what a teacher is. A teacher teaches us, guides us, amends our mistakes, scolds us when necessary and also punishes us too, but deep in our heart we all know that he is trying to make us civilized and successful by policing and improving our positive sides. To pay them high respect and follow their every direction should be our utmost aim at this age forgetting all other things. Celebrate the Teacher’s Day to pay respect to your teachers.

If you are a successful person, either employed or a businessman, then undoubtedly you understand very well the importance of a teacher and his contribution in your successful life. All that you have achieved till date and also what you will achieve in future is just because of the knowledge given to you by your teachers. The Teacher’s Day is very important for you and it brings you the chance to thank your teacher and show your love to them.

Relation between an Ideal Teacher and Student

The bonding between a teacher and his pupils is a very important and sacred part of Indian Culture. Our history is the proof of it. A student is like a bud of flower which has not bloomed yet and the Teacher is the gardener. S/He nourishes it, cares for it, and helps it in growing and smelling the entire Garden.

A good teacher is always dedicated towards developing his/her students. S/He works on making him/her able to fight and survive in the fast moving world. It does not matter if s/he lives in a hut or a small room but s/he becomes much happier to see the success of his/her students.

A student must understand the purpose of teacher and s/he can pay him/her teachers respect only by applying their teachings in life and making them feel proud. Instead of being rich and successful being a good citizen and responsible person obliges the teachers most.

A good bond between a teacher and a student has always led to success and fame. Gopal Krishna Gokhale was the political Guru of Mahatma Gandhi who asked Gandhi ji to return from South Africa and serve his Nation. It was Chanakya who guided Chandragupta Maurya to fight against Nanda Dynasty with the help of which Chandragupta Maurya established Maurya Dynasty.

Thus a good relation between a teacher and his student always has the power to change the history of the world.

So we have come to know that the Teacher’s Day is a very important day in the life of every person because every individual of the nation whether, young or old, has been a student some day. We must celebrate this day with zeal and respect to express our gratitude towards our teachers. It is not necessary to give them heavy and costly gifts but just a sense of utmost respect is enough to make them happy. A student and teacher’s relation is the most important thing in our nation that needs to be maintained for a long time to make the nation leader of the world.

25 Inspiring College Essay Topic Ideas

June 24, 2024

If you’ve ever wondered what other people write about in their college application essays, you’re not alone. Just as reading a range of novels can expose you to unique takes on similar themes, seeing others’ college essay topic ideas can open you up to new possibilities, spark creativity, and enhance your brainstorming process. Since we read hundreds of essays per year, we wanted to round up a collection of past topics from actual students to inspire your essay-writing endeavors. Moreover, we’ve paired those topics with targeted brainstorming questions that will set you off on your own path to success. Ready? Let’s dive in.

How do I find the right college essay topic ideas?

Like a well-hidden geocache , the right college essay topic ideas can only be uncovered with some effort. In general, the right college essay topic:

  • is interesting and/or exciting to you
  • demonstrates a quality, value, or perspective that can’t be found elsewhere on your application

While deciding, focus on asking yourself the right types of questions. For example, let’s say you’re down to two topics: a moral/ethical dilemma you recently faced, or the nonprofit you started last year. In this scenario, most students may assume they *should* write about the nonprofit–after all, it’s the more “impressive” of the two, right?

However, let’s divorce ourselves from “should.” Instead, ask yourself: if I write this essay, what will admissions officers learn about me that they can’t learn about elsewhere? Through starting this nonprofit, what have I learned about myself? Can I show my reader what I value, or how I handle problems? Or will I basically be re-hashing what is already in my activities list or honors section ?

Alternatively, the ethical/moral dilemma you recently faced completely threw you for a loop. It made you rethink a closely held belief and forced you to confront how you handle challenging situations.

Ask yourself: what will admissions officers learn about me that they can’t learn about elsewhere? What have I learned about myself? Can I handle this subject tactfully—without complaining, blaming others, or coming to a conclusion that feels forced/too neat? Can I be vulnerable?

Be honest with yourself, and a clear winner will emerge.

How do I find “unique” college essay topic ideas?

Every year, our students wonder how to ensure that their essay stands out, often asking us questions along these lines:

How do I make sure that my essay topic is different from everyone else’s?

If I write about my sports injury, will it sound like every other sports essay?

If I write about my parent’s illness, will that be just another sob story?

We get it—it’s natural and normal to be curious about what admissions officers want to hear, or wonder whether particular college essay topic ideas will strengthen your application more than others. While there is some strategy involved with topic selection, the way you write about and reflect on any given topic is usually much more important than the topic itself.

To that end, college essay topics/themes we see on a regular basis include:

  • Coming-of-age, most often a realization that changed their perspective or inspired personal growth
  • A challenging situation or moral dilemma
  • A passion or intellectual curiosity
  • A meaningful aspect of their family/identity/cultural background
  • An important community

We see these topics frequently because they are universal to the teenage experience. This does not make them bad or mean you should avoid them. On the contrary, it makes them classic, timeless, and relatable (remember, you’re trying to create a personal connection with your reader!).

Accordingly, use the above college essay topics/themes as a way to start collecting ideas for your own personal statement, and know you are in very good company if you write an essay on one of them.

Bottom line: you make a college essay topic “unique” by writing about yourself, in your own style and voice, with plenty of detail and specifics. You share what you learned and how you grew. That’s it!

Where can I find examples of college essay topic ideas?

Sometimes, you just need a list of examples. Let’s go back to our geocaching reference above. What the heck is a geocache, anyway? What will you find inside one? Do people use certain types of containers? Perusing a few examples will help you build an idea of what to expect when you go exploring. Okay, I could be looking for anything from Tupperware containers to film canisters…or fake rocks…what?!

Accordingly, in providing you with this list of college essay topic ideas, we want to validate and inspire you. These are real college essay topics developed by real college applicants, so it’s very likely you can connect or identify with at least a few of them. If a topic resonates with or sounds interesting to you, try writing down some thoughts on the associated brainstorming question and see where it takes you.

Some Topics Are Hard to Teach. A Teacher’s Guide to Tackling One of Them

teachers day essay topics

  • Share article

In America, 16.3 percent of children are growing up in poverty . This puts them at greater risk for a number of challenges that affect their lives inside and outside the school building, including higher absenteeism and dropout rates, and a greater likelihood for developmental delays.

In his book, Poverty, By America , Pulitzer Prize-winning sociologist Matthew Desmond examines the state of poverty in the country. Laura Mayer, a professional learning consultant with Penguin Books, Desmond’s publisher, created a supplemental guide for educators looking to teach about poverty in their classrooms.

It establishes a shared knowledge and vocabulary around issues of equity and economics, and offers ways for teachers to incorporate the subject into argumentative writing exercises and civics discussions in the classroom.

According to Mayer, many students are unaware of how pervasive poverty is. She hopes these lessons can turn students into poverty abolitionists—people who understand poverty and its causes, and can work on solutions.

9 Weird and Wonderful Ways for the Art Teacher to Rest and Refresh this Summer

childhood artwork

Being creative means thinking differently. The most innovative and influential artists were the ones with the courage to run with their weird and shocking ideas. For instance, Marcel Duchamp’s urinal, entitled  Fountain , turned the art world upside down ! While there is a time and place for structure, summer break is an art teacher’s moment to thrive, be bold, and experiment.

Try one of the many unusual yet enjoyable ways to relax below so you can fuel your unique art teacher energy.

1. embrace the power of productive play..

The Bauhaus is best known for its sleek modern style. It continues to shape graphic design, typography, and industrial design today. Did you know they also hosted some epic costume parties ? The parties allowed students to experiment across disciplines and make creative connections around a given theme. They believed that play was the force that made creativity possible. Johannes Itten , a Bauhaus teacher, famously said, “Play becomes joy, joy becomes work, work becomes play.”

Why not throw your own over-the-top costume party? Ditch your drab comfy clothes for a few hours and encourage guests to don a creative ensemble. You may end up with fresh ideas to incorporate into a future lesson for your students !

Play around with these fun costume prompts:

  • Dress as your favorite artwork
  • Channel your beloved art material
  • Personify an art concept
  • Collaborate to form a famous art duo

2. Fuel your creativity with unexpected inspiration.

Museums are a treasure trove for the artistically curious. Step outside your comfort zone and explore museums that might seem unusual at first glance. For example, consider the Museum of Surgical Science —it may seem strange, but the exhibits reflect an ingenuity and determination that can ignite surprising artistic connections. Check out museums dedicated to the truly bizarre, like The International Cryptozoology Museum (dedicated to mythical creatures), The Idaho Potato Museum , or even The Salt and Pepper Shaker Museum . No matter where you live, there is probably an oddly fascinating museum nearby.

3. Make a Mini Masterpiece every day!

Join AOEU during the month of July for Mini Masterpieces : a daily drawing challenge just for art teachers! All you need is a pad of sticky notes and your favorite drawing utensil. Take a few minutes each day to stretch your creative muscles and make something within an amazing community of support. Gain encouragement and innovative ideas by following co-hosts, Chris Hodge and Nylah Khan . Bring the prompts into your classroom this fall for your students so they can build an artmaking habit too!

4. Nurture your whole self.

Creative energy doesn’t exist in a vacuum . Taking care of your physical and mental well-being is crucial for sustained creativity. One area to focus on is to explore the culinary arts. Find healthy recipes and experiment with plating and presentation. Think of meal prep as a sculptural exercise and a delightful rebellion against childhood admonitions of “don’t play with your food.”  Regular exercise is another excellent way to boost your mental and physical well-being. Yoga, walking, running, or biking in nature can help you de-stress and reconnect with your body. If you take good care of your body, it will perform better for you. Plus, nature is another endless source of inspiration for artmaking at home and in the classroom .

5. Find your peace and take a piece.

Wherever you go and whatever you do this summer, savor the moments you feel calm, content, and relaxed. Collect souvenirs from these spaces to trigger good memories for a long time to come. Save a ticket stub from your local movie theater, a jar of sand from the beach, or a pressed flower from your garden. After weeks of collecting, arrange them into a work of art. Channel your inner Joseph Cornell and compose a conceptual box.

When you head back to school in the fall, take that little piece of summer with you. It can prompt you to keep calm, and it can serve as a great introductory lesson for the start of the school year. Just as Burton Morris’s nightstand portraits use objects to represent aspects of a person, share how your summer souvenirs are significant to you. Keep the summer vibes going into the school year, all while fostering connection with your students!

6. Connect with other creative professionals to spark new ideas.

We all have those cherished lesson plans that have consistently captivated our students year after year. Sometimes, even the most beloved activities can start to feel a bit routine. Sign up for the next NOW Conference , where you can virtually connect with the most creative and supportive community of art teachers. Embracing new perspectives can reignite your passion for teaching. Return to your classroom invigorated and armed with a treasure trove of fresh approaches to breathe new life into your tried-and-true lessons .

7. Enjoy getting carried away in a great story.

Throughout the school year, most teachers only have time (and the mental capacity!) to read emails and student essays. Take time to enjoy reading the articles and books you enjoy. There are also tons of great podcasts with fun facts that will have you riveted, even on the go! Art history is full of odd and interesting stories that can give you new insights into beloved works or encourage you to appreciate something previously overlooked .

books

8. Experience the joy and satisfaction of spring cleaning by upcycling clutter.

Art teachers are professionals at looking at clutter but seeing potential materials instead. Merge this creative mindset with a little productive cleaning. Choose a closet or drawer and empty it. Wipe it down and put back the items you need. Lay out all of the remaining contents and sort them into piles according to color. Sketch a composition—it can be an abstract shape design, a short quote, or something else. While you glue your materials into place to make a mosaic, enjoy the mindless nature of the process!

9. Be okay acting a little childish… because every child is an artist!

Do you remember the joy of discovery you experienced as a child? Go through your old mementos, look in your parents’ attic, and find some of the amazing pieces you created when you were young. Pick out a favorite to focus on and make an updated version. Try to approach the same subject with the same earnestness you had in your childhood—but apply your more mature art skills with your preferred medium.

You are never too old to enjoy constructing with plastic building bricks, decorating a dollhouse, or playing with other toys you obsessed over as a child. As you reminisce, think about the elements that made these toys so appealing. Is it the satisfaction of seeing a build come together? Do you enjoy daydreaming and fulfilling wishes? Reconnecting with the joys from your childhood will leave you better prepared to engage with students going forward.

childhood artwork

This summer, embrace the freedom to be unconventional, let your imagination run wild, and participate in playful exploration. Seek inspiration in unexpected places, such as a weird and wonderful museum, or transport yourself into the vibrant world of a podcast episode or book. Prioritize your well-being, nurture your creativity, and find joy in everyday moments with a childlike wonder. By fueling your unique art teacher energy, you’ll return to the classroom refreshed, inspired, and ready to make stellar art with your students.

What’s your favorite weird but wonderful way to recharge?

What can polls tell us in 2024?

John lapinski, the robert a. fox leadership professor of political science and director of the robert a. fox leadership program and the penn program on opinion research and election studies, talks polling in this presidential election year..

If there is one thing Americans can count on during any presidential election year, it’s the constant commentary about polls. But how has polling changed in the digital age? How accurately can polls predict election outcomes? What purpose do they serve?

John Lapinski , the Robert A. Fox Leadership Professor of Political Science and director of the Robert A. Fox Leadership Program and the Penn Program on Opinion Research and Election Studies (PORES) , addresses these questions. Lapinski also directs the Elections Unit at NBC News, where he is responsible for projecting races for the network and producing election-related stories through exit polls.

The American flag as an opinion poll with percentages.

“There have been misses with polling recently,” Lapinski admits. “Is it critically important that people have a sense of who may or may not win an election before election night? I don’t think so, but it is important, given that we live in an electoral democracy, that we have some way of measuring public opinion; otherwise, the people elected to represent us won’t know what we want.”

Lapinski notes that polling has changed dramatically over the decades. “We’ve seen big differences in response rates when using online methods versus telephone. There are differences in subgroups within a population, and it’s very pronounced with younger people,” he says.

“We’re doing a huge experiment right now at PORES, running five different surveys, including telephone interviews with both landline and cellphone interviews, a text survey, and two different online methods.”

In general, Lapinski says, polls can’t predict turnout. However, “one of the beautiful aspects of election polls is that you can determine whether they’re accurate or not because elections happen. Here’s what the poll said, here’s what the results said.”

This year’s election, he adds, will be “super close.”

Watch this special ed teacher get a huge retirement party surprise

teachers day essay topics

On Nancy Jenkins’ last day as a teacher, she was expecting a small celebratory meal with her close family. But instead, she opened the door to a surprise that brought tears of joy.

For 20 years, Nancy dedicated herself to Winter Park Elementary School in Wilmington, North Carolina, spending 17 of those years in special education, often in an intensive behavioral classroom. Despite the challenges, her love for her students never wavered.

Nancy’s daughter, Maggie Marsh, highlighted her mom’s compassion and positivity: “She is known as someone who would not only do anything to help a coworker or student in time of need, but she would also do anything just to make them laugh or smile.”

Inspired by Nancy’s dedication, Maggie organized a celebration not only for her mom’s retirement but also to honor her impactful career as an educator.

“After 20 years of selflessly putting others before herself and stepping in to help wherever assistance was needed, my mom was more than deserving of this celebration, and she is more than deserving of this retirement,” said Maggie.

Watch Nancy’s heartfelt reaction to the surprise celebration planned by her daughter!
