Secondly, market research can improve your strategy, particularly if your research identifies market trends.

The third reason for market research is to prove to readers that you are an expert in your industry. By conducting the research and presenting it in your plan, you achieve just that.

The following questions should be answered in the industry analysis section:

  • How big is the transportation industry (in dollars)?
  • Is the market declining or increasing?
  • Who are the key competitors in the market?
  • Who are the key suppliers in the market?
  • What trends are affecting the industry?
  • What is the industry’s growth forecast over the next 5 – 10 years?
  • What is the relevant market size? That is, how big is the potential market for your transportation business? You can extrapolate such a figure by assessing the size of the market in the entire country and then applying that figure to your local population.

Customer Analysis

The customer analysis section must detail the customers you serve and/or expect to serve.

As you can imagine, the customer segment(s) you choose will have a great impact on the type of transportation business you operate. Clearly, companies would respond to different marketing promotions than individuals, for example.

Psychographic profiles explain the wants and needs of your target customers. The more you can understand and define these needs, the better you will do in attracting and retaining your customers.

Competitive Analysis

Your competitive analysis should identify the indirect and direct competitors your business faces and then focus on the latter.

Direct competitors are other transportation businesses. 

Indirect competitors are other options that customers have to purchase from that aren’t direct competitors. This includes transportation companies such as limousines, bicycle services, car rental companies, etc.

With regards to direct competition, you want to describe the other transportation businesses with which you compete. Most likely, your direct competitors will be transportation businesses located very close to your location.

For each such competitor, provide an overview of their businesses and document their strengths and weaknesses. Unless you once worked at your competitors’ businesses, it will be impossible to know everything about them. But you should be able to find out key things about them such as:

  • Will you offer better pricing?

Think about ways you will outperform your competition and document them in this section of your plan.  

Marketing Plan

Traditionally, a marketing plan includes the four P’s: Product, Price, Place, and Promotion. For a transportation company, your marketing plan should include the following:

Product : In the product section, you should reiterate the type of transportation company that you documented in your Company Analysis. Then, detail the specific products you will be offering. For example, in addition to transportation services, will you provide GPS tracking, 24/7/365 service, client communication, and any other services?

Price : Document the prices you will offer and how they compare to your competitors. Essentially in the product and price sub-sections of your marketing plan, you are presenting the services you offer and their prices.

Place : Place refers to the location of your transportation company. Document your location and mention how the location will impact your success. For example, is your transportation business located near a warehouse district, an office complex, an urban setting, or a busy neighborhood, etc. Discuss how your location might be the ideal location for your customers.

Promotions : The final part of your transportation marketing plan is the promotions section. Here you will document how you will drive customers to your location(s). The following are some promotional methods you might consider:

  • Advertising in local papers and magazines
  • Commercials
  • Social media marketing
  • Local radio advertising

Operations Plan

While the earlier sections of your business plan explained your goals, your operations plan describes how you will meet them. Your operations plan should have two distinct sections as follows.

Everyday short-term processes include all of the tasks involved in running your transportation business, including cleaning the vehicle, any necessary mechanical needs the vehicle may require, fueling the vehicle, and informing clients of location and status updates.

Long-term goals are the milestones you hope to achieve. These could include the dates when you expect to obtain your XXth client, or when you hope to reach $X in revenue. It could also be when you expect to expand your transportation business to a new location.  

Management Team

To demonstrate your transportation business’ ability to succeed, a strong management team is essential. Highlight your key players’ backgrounds, emphasizing those skills and experiences that prove their ability to grow a company. 

Ideally you and/or your team members have direct experience in managing transportation businesses. If so, highlight this experience and expertise. But also highlight any experience that you think will help your business succeed.

If your team is lacking, consider assembling an advisory board. An advisory board would include 2 to 8 individuals who would act like mentors to your business. They would help answer questions and provide strategic guidance. If needed, look for advisory board members with experience in managing a transportation business or is connected to a wide network of professional associations.  

Financial Plan

Your financial plan should include your 5-year financial statement broken out both monthly or quarterly for the first year and then annually. Your financial statements include your income statement, balance sheet and cash flow statements.

Income Statement : an income statement is more commonly called a Profit and Loss statement or P&L. It shows your revenues and then subtracts your costs to show whether you turned a profit or not.

In developing your income statement, you need to devise assumptions. For example, will you take on one new client at a time or multiple new clients with multiple vehicles and drivers ? And will sales grow by 2% or 10% per year? As you can imagine, your choice of assumptions will greatly impact the financial forecasts for your business. As much as possible, conduct research to try to root your assumptions in reality.

Balance Sheets : Balance sheets show your assets and liabilities. While balance sheets can include much information, try to simplify them to the key items you need to know about. For instance, if you spend $50,000 on building out your transportation business, this will not give you immediate profits. Rather it is an asset that will hopefully help you generate profits for years to come. Likewise, if a bank writes you a check for $50,000, you don’t need to pay it back immediately. Rather, that is a liability you will pay back over time.

Cash Flow Statement : Your cash flow statement will help determine how much money you need to start or grow your business, and make sure you never run out of money. What most entrepreneurs and business owners don’t realize is that you can turn a profit but run out of money and go bankrupt. 

In developing your Income Statement and Balance Sheets be sure to include several of the key costs needed in starting or growing a transportation business:

  • Cost of vehicles
  • Cost of fuel and transportation overhead
  • Payroll or salaries paid to staff
  • Business insurance
  • Taxes and permits
  • Legal expenses

Attach your full financial projections in the appendix of your plan along with any supporting documents that make your plan more compelling. For example, you might include your vehicle lease or cost, types of customer you will be targeting, and the areas your transportation business will serve.

The limousine business has grown by an average annual rate of 2.7% over the last 15 years and brings in revenues of over $12 billion in the US alone. If you’re a people person who doesn’t mind long hours, starting a limousine business may be for you, but you’ll want to plan carefully, market effectively, and vary your types of service to ensure your business is a success.

Planning Your Limousine Company

Step 1 Know what you’re getting into.

  • Virtual Call Center – All you need for this is a business card, website, and toll-free number. You will field calls or internet request for rides and subcontract them to limo services, taking up to a 20% commission. This is an inexpensive way to build a customer base and accrue capital.   • Drive A Vehicle – You will need to start with a black sedan (usually a Town Car) and/or a limousine (white is preferable at first), both of which will require a significant investment. On the other hand, driving your own vehicle will allow you to increase your revenue substantially.
  • Fleet – Launching a fleet is the riskiest way to start your business, as it requires a large outlay of capital to purchase multiple sedans and limousines.   • Sole proprietorship – An unincorporated business run by an individual.   • Limited liability company (LLC) – To start an LLC, you must, at a minimum, choose a name and file articles of organization with your state, often for a fee. LLC owners pay taxes on profits through their individual income tax returns and have to pay self employment tax, but are protected from personal liability for the decisions and actions of the company.
  • Corporation – An independent legal entity owned by shareholders. To register your corporation you must choose a company name and file articles of incorporation with your state. You will also need to register with the IRS and get a tax ID. Corporations file taxes separately from their owners. This may prove advantageous, allowing owners to take advantage of the corporate tax rate, but it may also lead to double taxation. You should speak with your lawyer or accountant to see if this form of business will benefit you.
  • S Corporation – An independent legal entity owned by shareholders, like a typical corporation, except that to avoid double taxation, profits and losses are passed through to the owners’ personal tax returns, instead of the company paying taxes.

Step 3 Choose your business name and register it with your state government.

  • Web designers will build your site and take care of registering your domain name and selecting a webhost. The more you pay, the more input you will have in creating a unique site.

  • Promotion: How will you reach your target customers? For example, you may use social media, write blog posts, create an email marketing campaign, use pay-per-click advertising, or launch a direct mail campaign. Or you may promote your transportation business via a combination of marketing channels.

Operations Plan

This part of your transportation business plan should include the following information:

  • How will you deliver your service to customers? 
  • What infrastructure, equipment, and resources are needed to operate successfully? How can you meet those requirements within budget constraints?

You must also include your company’s business policies in the operations plan. You will want to establish policies related to everything from customer service to pricing, to the overall brand image you are trying to present.

Finally, and most importantly, your Operations Plan will outline the milestones your company hopes to achieve within the next five years. Create a chart that shows the key milestone(s) you hope to achieve each quarter for the next four quarters and then each year for the following four years. Putin suggests moving some major company headquarters outside Moscow

Russia is reducing use of Western currencies

RUSSIAN President Vladimir Putin said on Friday (Jun 7) that the idea of moving the headquarters of major companies to regions outside Moscow deserved attention, and called for better professional education to help alleviate a labour shortage.

Setting out a host of ambitions for Russia’s US$2 trillion economy, Putin said the world’s second largest oil exporter needed to cut imports, significantly boost the use of non-Western currencies in trade settlement and called for a major expansion of domestic financial markets.

Putin said Russian regions outside the capital needed to have more economic opportunities and that plans were being discussed to move the head offices of major corporations and state companies to the regions.

“The idea certainly needs to be worked out, but it deserves attention and support,” Putin said at the St Petersburg International Economic Forum.

He praised RusHydro, one of the world’s biggest producers of hydro-electric power, which is moving 1,500 head office jobs to the Siberian region of Krasnoyarsk.

Putin said trade with Asia was soaring and that nearly 40 per cent of Russian external trade was now conducted in roubles as the share in US dollars, euros and other Western currencies declined.

Russia should reduce its imports by creating competitive production and boosting investment in fixed assets by 60 per cent by 2030, Putin said.

He added that the value of the Russian stock market should double by the end of the decade and amount to two thirds of Russian gross domestic product (GDP).

Russia’s economy has defied Western sanctions imposed on it over the war in Ukraine, which began in February 2022. Its official growth forecast for 2024 is 2.8 per cent after expanding 3.6 per cent last year – faster than the US or the European Union.

The rebound has been helped by Moscow’s heavy spending on defence and security, but economists say the growth relies on state-funded arms and ammunition production. The economy is also being hampered by labour shortages that have been exacerbated by a military mobilisation in 2022 and the emigration of hundreds ot thousands of people since the start of the Ukraine war.

Putin spoke on a stage with Bolivian President Luis Arce and Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa, a fact that underlined Russia’s growing economic ties with countries in Latin America and Africa.

Austin City Limits Radio is hosting the 33 rd Blues on the Green concert series beginning Tuesday, June 11 in partnership with the City of Austin. Before heading to Zilker Park for the first show, attendees are encouraged to read through guidance from Austin Transportation and Public Works (TPW) and Austin Parks and Recreation (PARD) as current projects around the park will impact parking availability and travel time. 

Road Closures

Please reference the event map to see the impact to streets in and around Zilker Park. Specifically:

  • Barton Springs Road will be open until 9 p.m. but left turns will be prohibited between Lou Neff Road and Stratford Drive, and entrances to the park south of Barton Springs Road will be closed starting at 5 p.m.
  • Northbound Stratford Drive from Barton Springs Road will close once on-site parking fills as early as 6 p.m.
  • At 9 p.m., Barton Springs Road will be closed entirely from Azie Morton to MoPac.
  • All roads are expected to open back to normal traffic patterns around 11 p.m. 

Parking Information

  • Attendees may park in the Zilker Park area while space is available. Parking passes are available on-site for $20 per vehicle in the Polo Field area and $25 per vehicle in the Stratford lot.
  • Parking on the grass or on unauthorized park grounds is subject to a $250 fine during special events.
  • Parking is prohibited in the neighborhoods around Zilker Park and towing will be enforced.
  • View the Downtown Parking Map for available parking garages and surface lots in the downtown area.
  • Four bicycle parking areas are available at Zilker Park for attendees. Additionally, six MetroBike kiosks are located in the immediate area around Zilker Park for attendees that use Austin’s docked bike share program. Please reference the event map for exact locations. 

Alternative Transportation

  • CapMetro: Use the CapMetro trip planner to and from Blues on the Green. MetroRapid 803 is the best route to get directly to Zilker Park, but MetroBus 3 and MetroBus 30 will also drop off close to the park.
  • Rideshare: Pickup and drop-off points will be located near MoPac at Veterans Drive.
  • Hike & Bike Trail : Walk or bike directly to Blues on the Green. Bring a light and remember motorized vehicles are not permitted on the trail.
  • Micromobility: A micromobility drop-off and pickup zone is available at Barton Springs Road and Azie Morton.  

Zilker Park Reminders for Blues on the Green

  • Wear shoes, clothes, and hats that are appropriate for the outdoor environment and weather conditions.  
  • Pack plenty of water and stay hydrated throughout the show.    
  • Glass and Styrofoam are not allowed on park grounds.
  • No outside alcohol is allowed on site.  
  • Smoking and vaping are prohibited at Zilker Park. Violators are subject to a Class C Misdemeanor.  
  • Vending at the park site without a permit will result in a minimum $200 fine – a Class C Misdemeanor.
  • Please follow Leave No Trace principles. Plan ahead and prepare. Dispose of waste properly. Be considerate of other visitors. 

Thousands of people attend Blues on the Green every year, so plan your anticipated whereabouts ahead of time and set a meeting place in case cell phone coverage is intermittent at the show. Call 9-1-1 in the event of an emergency – where there is an immediate threat to life or property – and Austin 3-1-1 (512-974-2000) to report a non-emergency situation.

The vote for Elon Musk's hotly debated $55 billion pay package is next week.

The compensation plan, originally put into place in 2018, was struck down earlier this year by a Delaware judge who said the billionaire had undue influence over the board because of close ties to some of its members.

Tesla is now putting Musk's pay package to a shareholder vote on June 13 in an effort to reinstate it. So what will happen if it isn't approved?

Tesla board chair Robyn Denholm said in an interview on CNBC's "Squawk Box" on Thursday that there are multiple possibilities. The board has considered options such as creating a new pay plan — but she said that could end up costing shareholders more.

Denholm argued that the compensation tied to the 2018 pay package, which was worth an estimated $2.3 billion in stock-based compensation charges at the time, had already been paid out. Rejecting the plan wouldn't change that.

But if the shareholders overturn the 2018 pay plan, and Tesla were to craft a new plan with the same stock grants, they would cost around $25 billion worth of stock-based compensation today.

When asked if whether Elon Musk could ultimately sue Tesla if shareholders reject ratification, Denholm said it was "possible," but she didn't know how probable it would be.

"Well, the good part about the legal system in the US is anybody can sue anybody," Denholm said. But Denholm said at this point, it wasn't something that Musk had brought up to the board.

The Tesla board chair said while there may be other options, they would lead to increased costs or decreased motivation from Musk.

Denholm said the CEO has worked incredibly hard over the last six years to lead the company to "transformative growth." While shareholders and customers have both benefited, Musk himself hasn't received compensation.

"Ratifying the plan is the best option," Denholm said. "Clearly, if it doesn't pass, then there are other alternatives, but none of them are as good from a shareholder perspective as actually ratifying the plan."

There's also no guarantee that the pay plan will survive even if shareholders do ratify it on June 13. The Delaware court system could rule that it's still invalid.

Denholm said if that were to happen, it would be "detrimental" to shareholders, which is another reason she said they were fighting so hard to get it ratified.

"Well that is possible," she said. "But quite frankly, if you sit back, that is actually quite detrimental from a shareholder policy perspective."

"Shareholder votes have been pretty sacrosanct from a Delaware law perspective, from a corporate America perspective, from a legal system," she said.

Advocates for and against ratifying Musk's pay package have been ramping up their arguments in recent weeks. Several investment firms urged shareholders to vote against it, most recently the CEO of the California Public Employees' Retirement System.

Meanwhile, Tesla's board and prominent shareholders like Ron Baron have been actively campaigning for its approval, arguing that it is fair and necessary to keep the CEO's focus on Tesla.

Musk does not earn a salary and his compensation relies on the company's performance with specific metrics defined in 2018.

The executive pay plan involves a 10-year grant of 12 tranches of stock options that are vested when Tesla hits specific milestones. Once the company hits each target, Musk gets stock equal to 1% of outstanding shares at the time of the grant. Tesla said it hit all 12 goalposts as of 2023.
