Google is enhancing Android’s Circle to Search — the feature that lets you literally circle something on your Android phone’s screen to search it on Google — with a new ability to generate instructions on how to solve school math and physics problems .

Using an Android phone or tablet, students can now use Circle to Search to get AI assistance on mathematical word problems from their homework. The feature will help unpack the problem and list what the student needs to do to get the correct answer. According to Google, it won’t actually do the homework for you — only help you approach the problem.

Over the past year, the use of AI tools like ChatGPT has become a hot topic in the field of education, with plenty of concern over how students can and will use it to get work done quickly. Google, however, is explicitly positioning this as a feature to support education, potentially walking around some of the concerns about AI doing all of the work for students.

Later this year, Circle to Search will also gain the ability to solve complex math equations that involve formulas, diagrams, graphs, and more. Google is using LearnLM, its new AI model that’s fine-tuned for learning, to make the new Circle to Search abilities work.

Circle to Search first launched on  Samsung’s Galaxy S24 series in January and then on the Pixel 8 and 8 Pro later the same month. It’s one of the star new features of Android, and although iOS users can’t yet circle their math homework for help, anything is possible .

Since launching Google Lens as a a Pixel-exclusive feature in 2017, Google has not only expanded the availability of the tool to Android and iOS, but also built upon its functionality. Now, in addition to translator , tip calculator , personal shopper , and tour guide , Google has added math tutor to the job description for Google Lens.

Yes, with Homework mode, Google Lens can help you solve equations and learn math. And it arrives just in time, as many students in the US find themselves in remote learning situations due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Step 1: Access Google Lens

There are multiple ways to access this feature, but here's the best one. Open the Google Assistant by long-pressing your home button or swiping inward from one of the bottom corners. From there, press the Google Lens icon (to the left of the mic icon) and grant access to your camera if prompted.

If you have a Pixel smartphone, then Google Lens is built into your Camera app. When you open the Camera, tap More to access the additional camera features, where you'll find Lens.

Step 2: Enter Homework Mode

With Lens open, you'll notice that the camera view is constantly scanning what it sees. But, for the purpose of solving math problems, you'll want to select Homework mode from the ribbon menu at the bottom.

Step 3: Scan the Equation

Center the target brackets over the equation until Lens recognizes it and highlights it on the screen. Tap the equation, and Lens will analyze it. Lens can recognized typed or hand-written equations, though legibility can handicap the app's abilities for the latter.

Step 4: Solve & Learn

For simpler equations, Google will provide the steps to solve the problem as well as the solution. For more complex functions, Google will punt to other services from the web, such as Cymath, MathPapa, and Wolfram|Alpha.

You can also scroll further to find other resources, such as flashcards for similar problems from Quizlet and key concept explanations. Homework mode isn't as helpful for solving word problems, however, the hive mind of Google does provide resources from across the web for these exercises as well.

Lens makes it easy to search what you see and explore the world around you — including the new ability to search for skin conditions.

If you can see it, you can search it. That’s the simple idea behind Lens , our visual search tool available in the Google app ( Android and iOS ). With Lens, you can search what you see with your camera, take a picture or a screenshot, or long press an image you see while browsing, and get a range of visual results to explore.

As the saying goes, a picture is worth a thousand words, and it seems that many people agree: Every month we see more than 12 billion visual searches on Lens.

Haven’t tried Lens yet? If you need some motivation, here are our favorite ways that Lens can make your life a bit easier.

1. Learn about the things you see as you go about your day

If you see a cool building or landmark that you don’t recognize, Lens can tell you what you’re looking at and provide links to learn more. Similarly, whether on the road or in your own backyard, it’s not uncommon to discover plants and animals that you can’t quite clock or describe perfectly with words. Lens helps you search what you see and learn all about it — like whether that beautiful plant can grow indoors.

2. Search for skin conditions

Describing an odd mole or rash on your skin can be hard to do with words alone. Fortunately, there’s a new way Lens can help, with the ability to search skin conditions that are visually similar to what you see on your skin. Just take a picture or upload a photo through Lens, and you’ll find visual matches to inform your search. This feature also works if you're not sure how to describe something else on your body, like a bump on your lip, a line on your nails or hair loss on your head. This feature is currently available in select markets.

3. Translate street signs, menus and more into over 100 languages

If your summer plans involve travel, Lens can help you bridge the language barrier. Using the Translate filter in Lens, you can upload or take a picture, or even just point your camera at the text you want to translate, like a menu or a street sign. Lens will automatically detect the written language and overlay the translation on top of it, directly on your phone screen.

4. Get step-by-step help with homework problems

If you’re stuck on a homework problem in math, history or science, tap the “homework help” filter, then snap a picture, and Lens will share instructions to help you learn how to solve the problem. The homework help feature also enables you to tackle questions in multiple languages, and you can set your preferred language for search results.

5. Shop for the products that catch your eye

If you’re browsing on your phone and notice a product that you’d love to get your hands on — maybe a snazzy pair of walking shoes or a sleek and functional backpack — you can use Lens to find and buy one of your own. Just take a screenshot and select it in Lens, and you’ll get a list of shoppable matches with links to where you can make a purchase. It works the same way if you see something you want to buy while you’re out and about: Point your camera with Lens, snap a pic and you’ll see options from online merchants.

6. Or find different versions of those eye-catching products

About those snazzy walking shoes — maybe they’d be even better in blue. Multisearch in Lens lets you combine both words and images to find exactly what you’re looking for. In this case, snap a picture of the shoes in Lens and then swipe up to add words to your search (like “blue”). Lens will then show you similar shoes in the color of your choice. This also works with patterns — say you see a fun shirt and would love that pattern for your curtains. Take a pic of the shirt in Lens, swipe up and type “curtains” — and there you have it.

7. Discover delicious food near you

Multisearch also works for finding things nearby, like food from local restaurants. Let’s say you stumbled across an image of a dish you’re dying to try, but you’re not sure what it’s called. Just pull up that image in Lens and add the words “ near me ” to your search; Lens will show you nearby restaurants that serve what you’re looking for.

8. Unleash your creativity with Lens + Bard

As we shared at I/O, the power of Lens is also coming soon to Bard , our experiment that lets you collaborate with generative AI. Whether you want to learn more about something you saw, or explore completely new ideas in a more visual way, you can partner with Bard to start that journey. In the coming weeks, you’ll be able to include images in your Bard prompts and Lens will work behind the scenes to help Bard make sense of what’s being shown.

For example, you can show Bard a photo of a new pair of shoes you’ve been eyeing for your vacation, and ask what they’re called. You can even ask Bard for ideas on how to style those gladiator sandals for a complete summer look, and then continue browsing on Search — using the “Google it” button — to explore a wide range of products from retailers across the web.

Google has become invaluable to students and teachers, especially with remote learning becoming a necessity all around the world. Despite some of their shortcomings , the company's tools are generally incredibly helpful, and now, Google has highlighted  a few more education-focused features in its core product Search.

Google has added over 2000 STEM (Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) concepts to its results, giving you easy and fast access to educational overviews of topics such as " chemical bonds ." The overview provides details on types, examples, practice problems, worksheets, and calculators. The STEM resources and the practice problems have been available on desktops for a while following a smaller redesign , but it looks like Google is only making them more widely available in the US now. Google has also re-introduced its AR 3D models of chemistry, biology, physics, and anatomy concepts, which have been available on phones for a while now . And if you're stuck on math problems during homework, you can ask Google Lens for help.

For the next few weeks, Google has another neat new option planned. It wants to help with complicated STEM questions such as " 0.50 moles of NaCI are dissolved in 2.5 L of water, what is the molarity? " You'll be able to punch questions like this into Google Search, which will help you with detailed explanations and provide you with similar questions for practice.

While the announcement doesn't bring too many new things to the table, it's great to see Google reiterating its focus on education. That's right in line with recent adjustments to the parental supervision tool Family Link and child accounts.

Socratic by Google, the app that is meant to help students do their homework, has been released for Android with artificial intelligence (AI) backed enhancements. In March 2018, Google acquired Socratic that was available on Android devices in 2017 and brought its revamped version for iOS devices last year. The Socratic by Google uses Google AI to help students understand their homework at a high school and university level by finding relevant online resources. It is advertised to support most high-school subjects, including Algebra, Biology, Chemistry, Geometry, and Trigonometry.

As its name suggests, the Socratic by Google app is designed to provide “everything you need in one place” to students. It lets students use their voice or access the camera to ask problems and find relevant answers. The app also leverages AI algorithms to identify the problem produced by students and find their solutions online.

The Socratic by Google app has over 1,000 subject guides on higher education and high school topics such as Biology, Physics, Algebra, Geometry, Fiction, and Non-Fiction. It also uses educational resources and YouTube to provide required information to student users. Similarly, there are in-house answers that the app provides to students.

Originally, the Socratic app was available for download on Android devices to provide homework assistance to students. Google , however, acquired the app in 2018 and pulled its original existence from the Play Store. In 2019, Google released the revamped version of the app specifically for iOS .

The official Google for Education account on Twitter announced the fresh release of the Socratic app for Android devices. Moreover, the announcement was spotted by 9to5Google.

Students can download the Socratic by Google app on their Android devices directly through Google Play . The app is compatible with devices running at least Android 5.0.

This app can be a great help when it comes to organizing your school assignments, and homework organization is at the forefront of it. The design of the app is very graphic, and that’s a good thing. The app is really enjoyable to use. You can create really nice-looking timetables with this app, and also utilize the calendar view, if you want.

It will help you keep track of everything you need to do. The app does focus on timetables, which is arguably the best way to organize your daily assignments. The HomeWork app also delivers several homescreen widgets you can choose from, so you can keep an eye on your schedule at all times. This app does come with ads, by the way, but you won’t find any additional in-app purchases here.

Classify is also a planner app, and a really compelling one. This app allows you to keep track of your entire school schedule. You can actually make your timetables two weeks long, if necessary. Classify also allows you to keep track of your homework and assignments, of course. Each entry allows you to select the type of homework, teacher it’s due for, space for extra detail, and more.

Notifications are are a part of the offering as well, of course. You can set notifications for each homework to remind you when the homework is due. Various other reminders are included in the app, and the UI looks great. Classify actually uses a lot of color for in the app, but that’s a good thing in this case. Google app tests new colorful shortcut buttons for Search

The icons highlight some of Google Search's more hidden features.

• Google is testing a redesign of the Google app that would highlight four features with colorful buttons.
• The four buttons are for Gallery, Translate, Homework, and Sing features, which already exist in different places in the Google app.
• Though the new icons are colorful, the Google app still does not formally align with its Material You design language.

Google is testing bright and colorful buttons in the Google Search app that identify four features: Gallery, Translate, Homework, and Sing. The new icons were first spotted by Android expert AssembleDebug on X (formerly Twitter) and have been confirmed by others. However, they are not widely available yet and only show up for some users running beta version 15.8.38.29 of the Google app. 

Interestingly, although these four new buttons are colorful, they don't directly align with Google's Material You design language . Google has been steadily transitioning its software and services to Material You, but the Google app has been left behind. The colors used in the Google app beta are light and pastel versions of orange, blue, green, and red. 

The Gallery, Translate, Homework, and Sing features have already been present in the Google app, but they appeared differently. The app's current version has five options, though only a few are visible at once. They are also phrased differently, and the new designs are more concise and feature-friendly icons that signify their purpose.

The four buttons are housed within the same oval that includes the main Google Search bar. This section of the Google app homepage also still features a dictation button and the Google Lens toggle. Underneath the main search bar, dictation button, and Google Lens toggle is where you'll find the new Gallery, Translate, Homework, and Sing buttons.

It's possible that Google is trying to draw attention to these features. In their current state, the buttons blend into the white Google app homepage. The new orange, blue, green, and red icons certainly stand out more than the existing buttons. 

9to5Google managed to get these buttons working, revealing that they are context-aware. For example, if a user has just taken a screenshot, a new Screenshot button will appear. This pushes the other four buttons over, and users can swipe to access all of them. 

While the new buttons seem to have mixed availability in the beta version of the Google app, plans for a public release are currently unclear.

Another Play Store warning this month

Despite Google’s best efforts, its Play Store problem persists. A new report has just exposed a vast network of more than 250 “evil twin” applications on the official Android store, acting as decoys for malicious non Play Store duplicates.

HUMAN Security has dubbed this threat Konfety , and explains that “one evil twin version is distributed via malvertising and malicious downloads and performs ad fraud,” while shielded by its harmless Play Store duplicate. “At its peak,” HUMAN says, “Konfety-related programmatic bids reached 10 billion requests per day.”

Konfety abuses the CaramelAds mobile advertising SDK, with the evil twins much more widespread than their Play Store versions. But it’s those harmless decoys that provide the fraudulent revenue stream, “by spoofing the [Play Store decoy’s] app ID and advertising publisher IDs for the purposes of requesting and rendering ads.”

While ad fraud is painful and can have a detrimental affect on an infected device—think bandwidth and battery usage, this same campaign has also been caught directing users to websites with malware-laced apps, which is a different level threat.

HUMAN reports that Google Protect can now identify these evil twin apps. If you’re the kind of person with a habit of installing trivial apps from random developers, then you can check the list of know evil twins here. Clearly delete any you find.

A Google spokesperson told me that “users have been protected against the ‘Evil Twin’ apps for over a year with Google Play Protect, which is on by default on Android devices with Google Play Services [and] warns users and disables apps identified to be ‘Evil Twin’ apps.”

According to HUMAN’s Satori Threat Intelligence Team, which conducted the research, “although the decoy apps on the Play Store purport to be owned by different developers, they are template-based apps, many of which are owned by the Konfety threat actor group.” It was the relatively low install numbers combined with high ad traffic of the decoy apps that alerted HUMAN to the ongoing fraud.

This novel campaign provides an interesting twist on past ad fraud techniques, but yet again illustrates why it’s now so important to take care as to what’s installed from Play Store and especially from anywhere else. My advice remains to avoid downloading any apps through links or even third-party stores.

But at the same time a scan of the list of Play Store apps shows yet again that even the most trivial apps drive installs. This threat campaign required two things to operate successfully: users to install malicious apps outside Play Store, and users to install trivial apps from within Play Store. Both risky and yet both achieved with ease.

This report follows the news earlier this month that yet another Anatsa-laced app had been found and removed from Play Store. As such, the golden rules to staying safer on Android remain as critical for users as ever:

• Stick to official app stores—don’t use third-party stores and never change your device’s security settings to enable an app to load
• Check the developer in the app’s description—is it someone you’d like inside your life? And check the reviews, do they look legitimate or farmed? Avoid the indiscriminate installation of trivial apps you do not need.
• Do not grant permissions to an app that it should not need: torches and star-gazing apps don’t need access to your contacts and phone. And never grant accessibility permissions that facilitate device control unless you have a need.
• Never ever click links in emails or messages that directly download apps or updates—always use app stores for installs and updates.
• Ensure Google Play Protect is enabled on your device.

Android Security Bulletin—July 2024

The Android Security Bulletin contains details of security vulnerabilities affecting Android devices. Security patch levels of 2024-07-05 or later address all of these issues. To learn how to check a device's security patch level, see Check and update your Android version .

Android partners are notified of all issues at least a month before publication. Source code patches for these issues have been released to the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) repository and linked from this bulletin. This bulletin also includes links to patches outside of AOSP.

The most severe of these issues is a critical security vulnerability in the Framework component that could lead to local escalation of privilege with no additional execution privileges needed. The severity assessment is based on the effect that exploiting the vulnerability would possibly have on an affected device, assuming the platform and service mitigations are turned off for development purposes or if successfully bypassed.

Refer to the Android and Google Play Protect mitigations section for details on the Android security platform protections and Google Play Protect, which improve the security of the Android platform.

Android and Google service mitigations

This is a summary of the mitigations provided by the Android security platform and service protections such as Google Play Protect . These capabilities reduce the likelihood that security vulnerabilities could be successfully exploited on Android.

• Exploitation for many issues on Android is made more difficult by enhancements in newer versions of the Android platform. We encourage all users to update to the latest version of Android where possible.
• The Android security team actively monitors for abuse through Google Play Protect and warns users about Potentially Harmful Applications . Google Play Protect is enabled by default on devices with Google Mobile Services , and is especially important for users who install apps from outside of Google Play.

• Devices that use the 2024-07-01 security patch level must include all issues associated with that security patch level, as well as fixes for all issues reported in previous security bulletins.
• Devices that use the security patch level of 2024-07-05 or newer must include all applicable patches in this (and previous) security bulletins.

Anthropic’s claude now has an android app.

Two months after its debut on iOS , Anthropic has debuted the Claude app for Android.

Claude, like ChatGPT and Gemini, is a generative AI tool that can take prompts and provide answers that go beyond simple web links. Claude supports text, files, and images for prompts, and can perform tasks such as writing drafts, summarizing content, or finding the answer to a complex question.

Anthropic runs Claude and is currently basing the app on the Claude 3 LLM family of AI models. The app is described saying:

The Claude app for Android is designed with a simple UI that’s nearly identical to the iOS app. It’s free to use, but you’ll need the Pro plan for more usage.

I've already ditched the new Google Home widget and watch tile

There’s an Arabic saying that goes something like, “You fasted and fasted, only to break your fast on an onion.” English doesn’t have a real equivalent to this, though “much ado about nothing” comes close. But I prefer the Arabic version because it really describes the current state of Google Home’s new home screen widget on Android and its Wear OS shortcuts tile.

The two features were announced with the May Feature Drop after many years of requests, wishlists, and support threads, but are still unconvincing to use for a relatively simple smart home build . So much so that I’d still rather open the full Google Home app or the app of each of my smart home elements to control them.

Google home widget: good looks can be deceiving.

It feels like the Google Home team took forever and a day to gift us with the most basic Android feature of all: a home screen widget to control our smart home devices. And basic it is, even if, at first glance, it looks quite neat with its sexy Material You color scheme.

Before I get started with all the limitations of this widget, I should specify that it’s still in testing and thus only accessible if you join the Google Home app’s preview program ( Google Home > Settings > Public Preview > Join public preview ). Putting aside the baffling fact that it took so long and it’s still under “preview,” the biggest downside to using it now is that your smart home may not be 100% stable if you join the preview program. For example, each time I am part of the preview program, all my Chromecasts (and smart speakers) become unreachable from my phones. My husband can control them just fine, but not me.

I’ll come back to this in a bit. For now, let’s focus on the actual widget. When it first launched, I had the option to add all my Google Home favorites by default or pick and choose specific devices. Now, the second option seems to be gone. I’m not sure if the team is working on bringing it back, but it was certainly handy to create special and separate widgets. The Google Assistant , Broadcast, and Call Home buttons you see in one of my widgets were made when the custom shortcuts option was available.

So yup, for now, it seems like we get an all-or-nothing approach of favorites. Still better than nothing, eh? Until you add the widget and realize it’s a matter of all or nothing with most controls too. Lights? On or off, there’s no brightness or color wheel. Fan? Robot vacuum? Air purifier? Same. Even the few controls that Google Home is generous enough to give us in its app aren’t available here.

And if, like me, you think, “Eh, no fuss, I’ll just tap and hold to access more options,” then no, that won’t work. Tapping and holding triggers the widget movement and editing mode, not the selected device’s extra options.

The confusing part is that some devices, like Chromecasts, Nest cameras and thermostats , and routers show a small arrow indicating that they’ll open their full control panel in the Home app. So there is a way to get more controls, but Google has chosen to implement it for some device types and not others!

Other limitations of this widget include the lack of any scene or routine support: Even if I have some routines in my favorites, they don’t show up in the widget.

Then there are buggy behaviors like the disappearing icon in some widget sizes and configurations, the slow-to-update state, and the inability to force refresh it. If you add a new device to your favorites, it might show up immediately or take forever.

At this point, given the limitations, it’s simply not worth it for me to stay in the preview program and get that buggy Chromecast issue just to be able to get a couple of homescreen on/off shortcuts. I’ve removed the widget and pivoted back to my stable Google Home app. Your mileage may vary, depending on whether or not your Chromecasts go berserk when you’re part of the preview program.

But if the widget gets back its custom picks, adds the tiny arrow to control more options for every device, starts showing routines, and fixes those silly bugs, then it’ll finally be a nice way to control your smart home. For now, all it really has going for it is that it looks good with Material You.

Google Home Wear OS tile: Your guess is as good as mine

It took me forever and a day to realize that the new Google Home tile had rolled out to my Pixel Watch 2 . Why, you ask? Well, because it’s called “Favorites” in the Wear OS tile picker and I was looking for “Google Home” or “Home,” but I digress.

The tile allows me to have five shortcuts to my top five favorite devices or groups in the Google Home app, which, in my case, are all of my light groups and lights. The problem with the tile is that it only shows a generic device-type icon with no name and no indication as to what it may or may not control. You see where this is going, right?

Look at the image above and tell me which ones are my living room lights, which ones are my bedroom lights, and which ones are the hallway controls. Oh, you can’t guess… Well, neither can I. It doesn’t even show the current state of these devices, which might’ve helped me a bit with the guessing. The only way to solve this is to go in the Home app on my phone, see the order I’ve put these in and try to make it logical so I can fully memorize it on the watch. Or tap each one until I get the right light.

This isn’t a problem if you have one favorite light, one thermostat, one fan, one vacuum — you get it, just one of everything — in your favorites. But if you happen to have more than one room in your home and at least two or three of the same type of device, i.e. like the most simple smart home setup, then the tile is nearly useless to you.

Once again, this one isn’t worth keeping for me. I’d rather remove it than waste time swiping over it to access more useful tiles on my watch, so off it’s going again. I need names or more descriptive icons to be able to use it efficiently.

Alright, I’ll stop complaining for now. I’m still of the opinion that the Google Home app is finally on the right path and is getting lots of interesting updates and features, but some of these should be better implemented to be usable.

Google Maps is rolling out speedometer, speed limits on iPhone and CarPlay globally

Google Maps has introduced speedometer and speed limits on iOS and CarPlay — more than five years after their debut on Android — to help iPhone users avoid speed ticketing while driving.

TechCrunch has exclusively learned that Google has begun rolling out speedometers and speed limits for iPhone users globally. When people start navigation on Google Maps, the vehicle’s speed is shown in miles or kilometers, depending on the region.

Early last week, TechCrunch spotted Google Maps showing the new speeding features in India. Google confirmed to us on Tuesday that the rollout will be global.

You can turn on the speedometer and speed limits by tapping your profile picture on the Google Maps app on your iPhone and going to Settings > Navigation > Driving options. Once enabled, the speed limits feature will change colors on the speed indicator to nudge you to drive within the speed limit set in your region.

On a support page, Google mentioned that the speedometer shows the vehicle’s speed for “informational use only.” You should rely on your vehicle’s speedometer to confirm your actual driving speed.

Google launched the speedometer and speed limits feature on Android in 2019. In May of the same year, it was expanded to more than 40 countries after being limited to select markets.
