What the Best Mentors Do

  • Anthony K. Tjan

It’s not about making people more like you.

There are lots of ways to be a good mentor, but there are a few common principles that the best mentors share. One principle is putting the relationship before the mentorship. No amount of mentorship training outweighs the value of an authentic connection between mentor and mentee. Secondly, focus on developing your mentee’s character and not just their job skills. Invest in your mentee’s self-awareness, empathy, and capacity for respect. The next practice of good mentors is sharing their optimism much more than their cynicism. If your mentee shares an idea that seems unrealistic, try the 24 x 3 rule: spend 24 seconds, 24 minutes, or a day thinking about all the reasons that the idea is good before you criticize any aspect of it. Finally, be more loyal to your mentee than you are to your company. If your mentee’s passions and skills are not a good fit for their job, or if your company has limited opportunities for your mentee to move up, you should help them move on. At its highest level, mentorship means committing to helping other become fuller versions of themselves.

Mentorship comes in many flavors. It doesn’t always work unless leaders bear in mind a few common principles.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is the application process like? Logistics My work with students is done in Zoom meetings. I email a link to download their free software. I also send a link to a shared Google document, which we use to make notes, write outlines, and edit drafts of essays. Message The substance of our work begins with an exploration of the message you wish to convey to admissions officers. To identify a personal theme that captures your core, we discuss what defines you, what you value, and what you would contribute to a college community. Story A message gains meaning when it is told in the context of a story. To help admissions officers see you as something more than grades and scores, we identify moments that encapsulate your essence, creating the raw material for your essays. Outline Outlines are essential to the essay process. After showing you the basics of the narrative structure, I help you develop a paragraph-by-paragraph plan for each essay. This takes time. But the effort invested in outlines means that your words will be free to flow. Writing Writing your first draft will not be difficult. There is no word limit. Spelling does not count. Once words are on the page, we channel Ernest Hemingway: "The only kind of writing is rewriting." Multiple drafts provide the opportunity to mesh your message, your story and your voice.
  • Do you write essays for students? Writing essays for students is unethical, unnecessary, and ineffective. The unethical part speaks for itself: students applying to college should not cheat and I will not support cheating. Nor will I permit parents or friends to write or edit essays. My students' essays encapsulate their ideas, in their voice. Proof that outside writing and editing is unnecessary can be found on my admissions results page. Every student listed succeeded with the combination of their abilities and my guidance. It is also important to understand that adult writing is easily detected by admissions officers. Applicants suspected of cheating may be denied admission immediately.
  • Do you guarantee admissions results? The admissions results of my students are exceptional. Still, college admissions are intensely competitive; decisions often defy explanation. So I cannot guarantee that a student will be admitted to a particular school. What I can say is that the essays written by my students significantly increase their odds of admission by differentiating them from other applicants to elite universities.
  • Do you assign students to work with assistants? I do not have assistants. Students who agree to work with me can expect to work only with me. I also recommend against working with any consulting service that assigns students to staff members, no matter how impressive their resumes. Students and parents have the right to connect an essay consultant to admissions results.
  • How many students do you work with? College Essay Mentor does not fix the number of students for each year. Instead, I use my experience and judgment to determine the number of students whom I can provide an exceptional experience in the admissions process. As a result, the number of students varies from year-to-year. However, every year I stop accepting new students in order to honor my commitment to maximize the success of current students.
  • How often do you meet with a student? The schedule of meetings is determined by the completion of work and the availability of a student. Early in the process, a student and I might meet two or three times in one week. When other student commitments -- school work, internships, jobs, etc. -- intervene, the time between meetings is longer. My bias is always to move toward completion. I do not guarantee a minimum number of meetings or limit a maximum. Students and I continue to meet and work until we agree that every essay is excellent.
  • Can students make weekly appointments? In order to maintain flexibility, I do not set a regular appointment time. Instead, students tell me when their writing is complete and we meet as soon as possible, which is typically within one or two days.
  • Do you work on just the Common Application personal statement? Working on an essay package is the best way for me to ensure the high standard of all material in an application. An application with great Common Application essay with weak supplement essays will be less effective than an application where the ideas and writing are consistent. I only work on the personal statement as part of an essay package.
  • Do you work on just supplement essays? No.

The college application season is upon us, and high school students everywhere are staring down at one of the most daunting tasks: the college essay. As someone who has guided countless applicants through the admissions process and reviewed admissions essays on an undergraduate admissions committee, I've pinpointed the essential ingredient to a differentiated candidacy—the core of your college admissions X-factor .

The essential ingredient to your college admissions X-factor is your intellectual vitality. Intellectual vitality is your passion for learning and curiosity. By demonstrating and conveying this passion, you can transform an average essay into a compelling narrative that boosts your chances of getting accepted to your top schools. Here are five dynamic strategies to achieve that goal.

Unleash Your Authentic Voice

Admissions officers sift through thousands of essays every year. What stops them in their tracks? An authentic voice that leaps off the page. Forget trying to guess what the admissions committee wants to hear. Focus on being true to yourself. Share your unique perspective, your passions, and your values. Authenticity resonates deeply with application reviewers, making your essay memorable and impactful. You need not have experienced trauma or tragedy to create a strong narrative. You can write about what you know—intellectually or personally—to convey your enthusiasm, creativity, and leadership. Intellectual vitality shines through when you write with personalized reflection about what lights you up.

Weave A Captivating Story

Everyone loves a good story, and your essay is the perfect place to tell yours. The Common Application personal statement has seven choices of prompts to ground the structure for your narrative. The most compelling stories are often about the smallest moments in life, whether it’s shopping at Costco or about why you wear socks that have holes. Think of the Common Application personal statement as a window into your soul rather than a dry list of your achievements or your overly broad event-based life story. Use vivid anecdotes to bring your experiences to life. A well-told story can showcase your growth, highlight your character, and illustrate how you've overcome challenges. Intellectual vitality often emerges in these narratives, revealing how your curiosity and proactive approach to learning have driven you to explore and innovate.

Reflect And Reveal Insights

It's not just about what you've done—it's about what you've learned along the way. When you are writing about a specific event, you can use the STAR framework—situation, task, action, and result (your learning). Focus most of your writing space on the “R” part of this framework to dive deeply into your experiences and reflect on how they've shaped your aspirations and identity.

NSA Warns iPhone And Android Users To Turn It Off And On Again

‘godzilla minus one’ is coming to netflix this weekend, but there’s a catch, sudden u s dollar collapse fear predicted to trigger a 15 7 trillion etf bitcoin price gold flip as countries go dual currency.

The most insightful college-specific supplement essays demonstrate depth of thought, and the ability to connect past experiences with your future life in college and beyond. Reflecting on your intellectual journey signals maturity and a readiness to embrace the college experience. It shows admissions officers that you engage deeply with your studies and are eager to contribute to the academic community.

Highlight Your Contributions—But Don’t Brag

Whether it's a special talent, an unusual hobby, or a unique perspective, showcasing what you can bring to the college environment can make a significant impact. Recognize that the hard work behind the accomplishment is what colleges are interested in learning more about—not retelling about the accomplishment itself. (Honors and activities can be conveyed in another section of the application.) Walk us through the journey to your summit; don’t just take us to the peak and expect us know how you earned it.

Intellectual vitality can be demonstrated through your proactive approach to solving problems, starting new projects, or leading initiatives that reflect your passion for learning and growth. These experiences often have a place in the college-specific supplement essays. They ground the reasons why you want to study in your major and at the particular college.

Perfect Your Prose

Great writing is essential. Anyone can use AI or a thesaurus to assist with an essay, but AI cannot write your story in the way that you tell it. Admissions officers don’t give out extra credit for choosing the longest words with the most amount of syllables.

The best essays have clear, coherent language and are free of errors. The story is clearly and specifically told. After drafting, take the time to revise and polish your writing. Seek feedback from teachers, mentors, or trusted friends, but ensure the final piece is unmistakably yours. A well-crafted essay showcases your diligence and attention to detail—qualities that admissions officers highly value. Intellectual vitality is also reflected in your writing process, showing your commitment to excellence and your enthusiasm for presenting your best self.

Crafting a standout college essay is about presenting your true self in an engaging, reflective, and polished manner while showcasing your intellectual vitality. Happy writing.

Alumni establish new scholarship to honor mentor and legend

"

“He’s been such a huge part of my life, as a mentor and like a second father as well. I don’t know where I’d be in my professional career without him.” -Julio López, D.V.M. ’08. Pictured above, Steve Ettinger ‘62, D.V.M. ’64, right, and Lopez. Photo: Provided.

When it comes to Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) alumni who have impacted the college and the veterinary profession, Steve Ettinger ‘62, D.V.M. ’64, invariably comes to mind. Now, his broad-reaching influence is being recognized through a new scholarship in his name. The Stephen J. Ettinger 1962, D.V.M. 1964 Scholarship is the culmination of a long-standing wish of Julio López, D.V.M. ’08, whose relationship with Ettinger has been instrumental in shaping his own veterinary career.

“He’s been such a huge part of my life, as a mentor and like a second father as well,” says López. “I don’t know where I’d be in my professional career without him.”

Many other veterinarians would likely agree. Ettinger is considered a founder of specialization in veterinary medicine, having helped establish the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine and serving as president of cardiology in that group — from which he received the inaugural lifetime specialty achievement award . He has authored hundreds of journal papers and key foundational textbooks, including Canine Cardiology (1970) and the Textbook of Veterinary Internal Medicine, the ninth edition of which published in January 2024.

Ettinger’s impact at Cornell is also considerable; he has served on the Cornell University Board of Trustees, the Dean’s Leadership Council and the Advisory Council and received a Daniel Elmer Salmon Award for Distinguished Alumni Service in 2010.

A mentor to many

For López, Ettinger’s influence was deeply personal. López worked as a technician at the California Animal Hospital while an undergraduate at UCLA and decided to apply to CVM thanks to his encouragement. After graduating veterinary school, López went on to intern with Ettinger in small animal internal medicine. For years, López wondered how he could show his gratitude to his mentor. However, gaining the financial ability to establish a fund would take time. López purchased his first private practice during the COVID-19 pandemic, which he admits felt a little nerve-wracking initially, but he soon realized that veterinary practices were in higher demand than ever.

“It has always been my dream to have my own practice,” López says. “Dr. Ettinger was instrumental in guiding me through that as well.” Soon, the new clinic was thriving, and López was able to open a second practice — and could give serious thought to a way to honor his mentor. Given Ettinger’s deep belief in helping strengthen the profession and helping others, a scholarship was the obvious choice.

López pitched the idea to fellow alumnus Fred Brewer, D.V.M. ’09, whom Ettinger also mentored, and together they approached Etienne Côté, D.V.M. ’93, a fellow cardiologist who had been similarly influenced by the legendary veterinarian. “He’s played such a role in all our lives,” says López. “It’s the perfect opportunity to come together and make this gift that honors his background of giving back.”

For Brewer, Ettinger’s impact has been significant ever since he first stepped into his practice over 20 years ago.

“It was clear from the first meeting that, as long as I was all in, he was all in,” says Brewer. “And he has been all in with his support every step toward vet school and beyond.”

Côté first worked under Ettinger during a student externship at California Animal Hospital. “That ended up being where I spent the first five years of my career, so his influence was profound,” he says. “No question about it: He showed me what was possible and offered me feedback the whole way along as I navigated it.”

A surprise announcement

López, Brewer and Côté decided to surprise Ettinger with the gift, and contrived to share the news when their mentor would be in Ithaca to celebrate his son Ricky’s graduation from Cornell. Lorin D. Warnick, D.V.M., Ph.D. ’94, the Austin O. Hooey Dean of Veterinary Medicine, asked Ettinger to meet him in his office — much to Ettinger’s bemusement.

“I wondered why the dean wanted to meet me on a Sunday,” Ettinger says. “As I was talking to him, he kept looking at his watch, and I thought that I better get this thing over with and let the poor guy go on his way.”

But then Warnick opened the door to his office, and there to Ettinger’s surprise was a large group of people he knew well — López and Ettinger’s wife Patricia and their children, his cousin Dr. Dennis Socha, and others, along with CVM’s director of development Alison Smith. Still, Ettinger was perplexed. “I still had no idea why they were all there,” Ettinger says. “At that moment, two plus two did not equal four.”

Giving back

Since the surprise announcement in May, Ettinger has been glad to see his eponymous scholarship help students who need it the most. He himself has helped direct several former clients to make gifts of scholarship to Cornell with this goal in mind, including the Barbara Benz Memorial Scholarship.

“There are kids out there that are more than worthy of joining the profession, but need that financial help,” Ettinger says. “I really appreciate that Cornell works hard to seek out and support those students.”

López, Brewer and Côté are hoping others will feel inspired to donate to this cause.

“Steve has helped a lot of people along the way, both by supporting them and by directing resources and donors to Cornell Vet,” Côté says. “Many people who have gotten a boost from him probably don't know it. This is a good way to keep that momentum going with a tip of the hat in recognition to Steve at the same time.”

Says Brewer, “This scholarship is bigger than the name attached to it. It represents an ethos of paying it forward that needs to be cultivated. Take a brief moment to reflect on your own pathway to veterinary medicine. You will surely find moments where support was given to you. And without that support your success may not have been possible. This scholarship is a recognition of that support, appreciating it with a grateful heart and passing that support forward to future generations of students.”

Class of 2024 Graduates from the UCR SOM

66 medical students received their degrees in the ceremony

The UCR School of Medicine class of 2024 began their medical school journey online during the COVID-19 pandemic, but finished it on Friday surrounded by cheering family and friends.

66 students received their degrees in the ceremony, which was held on May 31, 2024 in the Student Recreation Center on UCR’s campus. A recording of the event is available here .

Deborah Deas, MD, MPH, the vice chancellor for health sciences and the Mark and Pam Rubin dean of the School of Medicine , highlighted the class’s unprecedented path in her opening remarks during the ceremony. “I could never have predicted the challenges you would face nor the necessary changes we would make to prevent disruption in your medical education,” Deas said, noting that the students took their first medical school classes via Zoom and had their White Coat Ceremony delayed by a year. “During the past four years, you demonstrated ingenuity, resilience and adaptability,” she continued. “Your class will be forever recognized as the most pioneering class in our school’s history--the class that bravely and successfully navigated uncharted territory.”

Crowdshot at graduation 2024

Deas commended the students’ persistence in successfully earning their MDs and thanked their family and friends for their support throughout their medical school journey. “I’m sure that your family, friends, and loved ones who are here today would agree that this moment beautifully embodies the ‘better tomorrow’ we all hoped for four years ago,” she said. “We are all truly delighted that we can come together to celebrate your achievements and to welcome you into the medical community as physicians.”

The class of 2024 upholds the SOM’s mission to increase access to medical care in Inland Southern California, with 26% of the class staying in the Inland Empire and 43% in Southern California for their residency training, their next step toward becoming physicians. In addition, 81% of the class will enter primary care specialties and other specialty areas that are lacking in the Inland Empire, specifically family medicine, internal medicine, pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology, psychiatry, and general surgery.

“This is a remarkable outcome,” said Deas.

Elizabeth Celaya-Ojeda at commencement

Elizabeth Celaya-Ojeda, who matched into residency at Kaiser Permanente Fontana Medical Center, plans to specialize in family medicine in the local area. “I still wanted to stay in the Inland Empire through my training just because this is the place that’s raised me, this is the place that's allowed me to be a doctor, and so I want to continue to be here,” said Celaya-Ojeda, who grew up in Covina and has family in Riverside. She received an Inland Empire Health Plan (IEHP) scholarship that covered four years of medical school tuition in exchange for her practicing for five years in the Inland Empire. “I'll probably still stay here afterwards more than five years,” Celaya-Ojeda said.

Keynote speaker David Rubin, MD, MSCE, executive vice president of University of California Health, touched on the hurdles the class has overcome and emphasized the importance of community in his address.

Dr. David Rubin

“Today, you join a community of physicians profoundly impacted by a world that is hurting… Never doubt the impact you can have, and take heart in knowing that you are not alone,” he said. “That community-based approach that you are steeped in from your time at UC Riverside will carry you forward in a way that helps keep you connected.” The ninth chancellor of UC Riverside, Kim A. Wilcox , also spoke.

Inland Empire native Branden Barger, pictured at the top of the page, addressed the audience as the class’s student speaker, also focusing on community and the deep connections that the class formed during medical school. “What we experienced together – circumstances we could have never imagined when we dreamed of going to medical school – now bind us together even more tightly,” Barger said. He called for the new physicians to continue to foster community by supporting each other in their medical careers, and by supporting and mentoring future doctors as well. “You all know…the many sacrifices that your support networks have made to make this dream a reality, and it is because of that knowledge, and your perpetual commitment to honoring that, that makes each of us stronger, more capable, more caring, more empathetic physicians,” he said. “Therein lies the truth of our success. It’s community; it’s support; it’s love.”

“[Today] has been a long time coming,” said Brook Yirgu, class of 2024. Yirgu grew up in Inglewood before attending high school in Riverside. “Being able to grow up in this region then also actually serve the community that I grew up in, I think is an invaluable experience,” said Yirgu, who will enter UCLA’s internal medicine residency program. “Ultimately, serving underserved communities is the main goal of mine, and if I can do it locally, I'll be that much happier.”

  30. Essay on finding good mentoring advice in academic careers

I have three people who were assigned to mentor me in my first year, but it was unclear what that meant. The meetings and conversations tended to result in a conclusion of: "You're doing fine.
