A year without homework: One Japanese elementary school challenges the norm

A public elementary school in rural Japan has done away with homework — and after one year, some students say they are more motivated to learn.

The principal of Yamagata Prefecture's Nisshin Elementary School, Asai Jun, took the bold initiative in April 2023. When he welcomed the 64 new first-graders this year, he told them: "Instead of being forced to study, I want you to find what you really want to know, and think and learn by yourself."

Respecting independence

Homework is common at most Japanese schools although it is not required by law.

Asai, who has four decades of teaching experience, has taken part in workshops overseas and heard education experts speak about the importance of fostering children's independence.

That led him to reconsider learning methods at his school, which has 500 students.

"Adults may feel relieved if kids are doing their homework, " Asai says. "But homework can easily become a task whose only purpose is to be turned in without thinking. I wondered if this really benefits the students, and if they actually gain the ability to learn."

By scrapping homework, he wants children to "think and learn on their own about what they want to do, and what they are interested in."

year 1 in homework

Instead of homework, the school offers optional handouts that allow students to review their lessons on their own.

"We are repeatedly telling the children that we still want them to study," Asai says. "We expected that students would take one or two handouts, but some are taking as many as 10."

"I can clearly see that they are much more motivated when they are allowed to choose their own homework than when it is given to them."

Allaying initial doubts

Before introducing the no-homework policy, Asai set up dozens of meetings with teachers to allay their fears that the students would find it difficult to develop good study habits. The teachers were also concerned it would be difficult to track pupils' progress.

During a one-month trial period in February last year, many students opted to study themselves without set homework. That paved the way for the elimination of homework altogether.

Some teachers note that because they don't need to mark and grade homework, they have more time to prepare lessons and interact with students.

Motivated to study

A 5th grader whom NHK chose to identify only by his first name, Ginji, still studies about twice a week after school. "I was surprised when I was told that there was no more homework, but somehow I am more motivated without it," he says.

year 1 in homework

Ginji's mother, Saori, was initially worried about the school's decision. But she sees a positive shift in her son's attitude towards study. And with no more arguments at home about homework, there is less tension and more time for listening and interaction.

Listening to parents

In a survey last July, about 10 parents at the school expressed opposition to the no-homework policy. One of the parents claimed their child had stopped studying, and another cited a decline in academic performance.

Asai addresses questions and concerns with one-on-one meetings, during which he explains the importance of independent thought and learning.

Teachers also identify students who need help with their study habits.

Educational researcher Seo Masatoshi says that kind of support is essential to ensure that no gaps appear in children's learning opportunities or academic performance.

"It's time to rethink the one-size-fits-all approach to education," he says. "But we must recognize that some children may not know how to study on their own at home, so it is necessary to help with this to some extent. During the holidays, it would be a good idea for teachers to set up an opportunity to check their students' learning progress."

In January this year, students at the school took a scholastic aptitude test. The overall results were little different to previous years, when set homework was in force.

"I believe the future is not an era of one-way cramming of knowledge," the principal says. "I want to change the way of thinking about education and academic achievement," says Asai. "There are many things we can review in Japanese schools…to help children think and act spontaneously."

‘I’m having the best time of my life.’ Chowchilla freshman golfer shining at U.S. Open

Chowchilla High freshman Asterisk Talley may have one of the better excuses for any teenager not finishing her homework.

The 15-year old is trying to win the 2024 U.S. Women’s Open Golf Championship.

Talley turned in another impressive performance, shooting a one-over par round of 71 on Friday in the second round at Lancaster Country Club in Pennsylvania. This came just one day after shooting an even-par 70 in the first round.

Talley is currently tied for seventh on the leaderboard as of 4 p.m. Andrea Lee and Wichanee Meechai are currently tied at the LPGA’s second major of the year at three-under through 14 holes on Friday. Only four players are under par at the moment.

Talley has become one of the stars of the tournament as the youngest player in the field.

During an interview with NBC Sports on Friday, Talley said she has a lot of homework due today.

“It’s probably not going to get done today,” Talley told NBC Sports . “I feel like I can fluctuate with the due date even though they were like, ‘No exceptions,’ I am going to make them have exceptions.”

Her teachers back home in Chowchilla will likely understand. Most of them have joined the tight-knit community in cheering Tally on this week.

Talley, an amateur, qualified for the U.S. Open after shooting a 5-under-par 137 to earn the second and final spot from the San Joaquin Country Club qualifier in Fresno on May 6.

During Thursday’s first round, Talley shook off a triple bogey and battled back to shoot an even-par round, which was good for fifth place.

On Friday, Talley hit a drive into the water on her fourth hole and was able to save bogey.

“I feel like that was a big booster in the round because if I would have got double on that hole, that might have broke my round,” Talley said. “I feel like that was a big part of it. Then I was just steady pars after that, and then I just played some solid golf.”

Talley’s second round began on hole No. 10 on Friday and she recorded pars on 15 of her 18 holes. She recorded bogies on holes No. 12 and No. 18 and scored her only birdie of the round on hole No. 6.

“I feel like my expectations were to at least make the cut,” Talley said. “That’s what I wanted to do. Then if I achieved that, I wanted to get low amateur. But I feel like that’s still achievable even after today’s round.”

“I feel like I’m doing what I want so far, and I’m really happy with where I am.”

Talley was peppered with questions about being the youngest player out there, if she’s a Taylor Swift fan, and how she’s keeping up with schoolwork.

Talley says she’s not a full-fledged Swiftie but likes her music.

“Kind of,” she said. “I’m like half. I’m not like part of the fandom or anything. Just the music is okay, so yeah.”

Talley says she doesn’t mind the extra media attention.

“Not really,” she said. “I feel like I’m kind of used to it. But at the same time, I haven’t been in one of these. But it’s not that bad.”

Talley will likely find herself in one of the final pairings for Saturday’s third round. Talley says she’s enjoying this experience at her first U.S. Open.

“I’m just trying to have a good time out here,” Talley said. “I want my first Open to be memorable and for it to always be something I can look back on and say I had the time of my life, and I feel like earlier in the week I wasn’t having a lot of fun.”

“Then when I started playing the tournament rounds I had so much fun out here,” Talley added. “I’m having the best time of my life, so I hope that I can look back and just remember this time.”

Asterisk Talley has a problem — just not on the golf course.

No, the 15-year-old — who has played two impressive rounds of golf at the US Women’s Open — has a “bunch” of homework due Friday.

“It’s probably not going to get done today,” Talley told NBC Sports on Friday afternoon from Lancaster Country Club in Pennsylvania. “I feel like I can fluctuate with the due date even though they were like, ‘No exceptions,’ I am going to make them have exceptions.”

Talley has earned them.

The Californian is 1-over through two rounds at the US Women’s Open, backing up an even-par opening round — which included recovering from a triple bogey on No. 7 — with a 1-over round Friday to put herself in contention heading into the weekend.

“My dad always taught me not to be nervous because if I am nervous then I am just going to mess up anyways,” Talley said.

The two rounds look all the more impressive considering what this course did to the best players in the world Thursday: Nelly Korda was 10-over , Rose Zhang was 9-over, Lexi Thompson was 8-over.

The clubhouse lead as of Friday afternoon was 1-under par with a pair of former US Women’s champions — Minjee Lee and Yuka Saso — sharing it as the afternoon tee times hit the course.

“It’s just so hard,” Talley said of Lancaster CC on Thursday. “The pins they had on the practice rounds, I was like, if they put the pins here I’m going to start crying. I was on the verge on a couple holes with the way I was playing. But I’m not mad with where the pins were today, the way I played the course, so I feel like I’m happy with how I did.”

Asterisk’s mother, Brandii, is Greek and her daughter’s name means “little star” in that language , Yahoo Sports reported.

Talley said she was switching between drivers in the lead-up to the event, which she reached through qualifiers.

At the urging of her dad, Talley said she mimicked her swing after Nelly’s sister, Jessica, who is also a top player.

Asterisk Talley chips onto the eighteenth green during the second round of the U.S. Women's Open.

“If you don’t hit the fairway you are definitely making bogey or scrambling for par,” Talley said. “I feel like just hitting fairways and play for rollout on the greens. Because if you are above the hole you are definitely going to have a super scary putt coming back.”

Review: 'Hit Man' is one of the best movies of the year

Oooowee, this is one scorchingly sexy thriller.

Glen Powell as Gary Johnson in "Hit Man."

Oooowee, "Hit Man" is one scorchingly sexy thriller.

It's also more, a lot more. "Hit Man," now in theaters on its way to Netflix on June 7, is powered by a new leading man who really brings the heat. His name is Glen Powell . You may have seen him hitting the action pedal with Tom Cruise in "Top Gun: Maverick" and then going all swoony-dreamy romantic opposite Sydney Sweeney in "Anyone but You."

But you ain't seen nothing yet. "Hit Man," written by Powell and director Richard Linklater, paints a deceptively comic face on darkness while sealing the deal on Powell as a Paul Newman/Steve McQueen for the 21st century. Such dazzle should not be taken lightly.

PHOTO: Glen Powell as Gary Johnson in "Hit Man."

Hollywood historians may try to pinpoint the precise moment when Powell became a movie star. It's here, about 15 minutes into "Hit Man," when Powell— playing a nerdy New Orleans philosophy professor—finds his inner cool by taking on bad-boy identities as an undercover hit man for the New Orleans PD. Hire him and the cuffs go on pronto.

Justice triumphs, but for this divorced, stay-at-home, bird-watching, cat laddie who drives a Honda Civic that doesn't know from vroom, it's the rush of playing a pretend badass that becomes an addiction. He's hooked. You will be, too.

MORE: Review: 'Drive My Car' a flat-out masterpiece, enthralling from first scene to last

Cheekily billed as a "somewhat true story," the film is based on Gary Johnson, a teacher who really did work undercover. But don't get hung up on facts since "Hit Man" frequently flies off into fantasy. What stays real is Gary teaching his students about the interplay between the id (primal urges) and the superego (morality) and the efforts of the ego to hold them in balance.

Talk about relatable. Gary lets his id flag fly, taking on wigs, fake teeth and accents as, among other fake IDs, a red-headed Brit killer, a stogie-chewing Russian thug and, most importantly as Ron whose swagger grows beyond what a leather jacket and a thousand dollar haircut can provide. "OK, Daniel Day," raves a cop (Retta) who is mightily impressed by his acting.

PHOTO: Glen Powell as Gary Johnson and Richard Robichaux as Joe in "Hit Man."

His students are shocked. "When did our teacher get hot?" When indeed. I'd say when Gary begins to identify more with Ron than himself. It's Ron who attracts Madison, played by the electrifying Adria Arjona, who hires him to off her abusive husband (Evan Holtzman).

The laughs pop so vividly that at first you might miss the grace notes and the amplitude of Linklater's vision.

Sex on screen hasn't been this fun in years. But you always get a sense of something deeper and dangerous percolating beneath the livewire banter that can't quite disguise the secrets kept by two characters who can't keep their hands off each other.

What is "Hit Man," really? A case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde meet the Nutty Professor? A radical romance that hinges on Freud, Jung and Nietzsche? Or a chance for Powell to prove he's a powerhouse actor able to nail every nuance in a juicy, challenging role?

How about all of the above? Without resorting to spoilers, I'd say go in without preconceptions for one of the best movies of the year, the kind you'll keep running back in your head with a smile that won't quit. How do you resist that? Two words: You don't.

Judge denies petition to recall death sentence of man who killed 12-year-old Polly Klaas

A California judge has denied a petition to recall the death sentence of a man convicted in the 1993 kidnapping and killing of 12-year-old Polly Klaas in a case that shocked the nation

SAN JOSE, Calif. — A California judge on Friday denied a petition to recall the death sentence against Richard Allen Davis, who in 1993 killed 12-year-old Polly Klaas after kidnapping her from her bedroom at knifepoint in a crime that shocked the nation.

Jurors in 1996 found Davis guilty of first-degree murder and of the “special circumstances” of kidnapping, burglary, robbery and attempting a lewd act on a child. Davis was on parole at the time of the child’s abduction and killing and had an extensive kidnap and assault record going back to the 1970s. He was sentenced to death.

Davis’ attorneys argued in a February court filing that his death sentence should be recalled because of recent changes to California sentencing laws that eliminate some sentencing enhancements. They also noted California’s current moratorium on the death penalty. In 2019, California Gov. Gavin Newsom placed a moratorium on executions , calling the death penalty “a failure” that has discriminated against defendants who are mentally ill, Black and brown, or can’t afford expensive legal representation.” A future governor could change that policy.

Sonoma County District Attorney’s Office said in a court filing that Davis’ attorneys’ arguments are “nonsensical” and that the laws they are citing don’t apply to Davis’s death sentence for Polly Klaas’ murder.

On Friday, Sonoma County Deputy District Attorney Sarah Brooks told the court that Davis’ attorneys were wrongly citing a law enacted in 2022 that allows reassessing the sentences of some people whose punishments were influenced by special enhancements. She said their petition was a “collateral attack on the 1996 conviction and sentence to death.”

Judge Benjamin Williams agreed with prosecutors and denied the petition. He said that rather than asking for Davis to be resentenced, defense attorneys were trying to vacate the punishment phase of the trial. Davis was not present during the hearing.

Marc Klaas, Polly Klaas’ father, gasped as the judge announced his decision. He was in the courtroom with about a dozen supporters wearing buttons with Polly Klaas’ photo or red T-shirts with the Klaas Kids Foundation logo. He said he was relieved and grateful to prosecutors and the judge.

“Our judge and our prosecutor were so decisive in their arguments and in their decision that there’s really no place for this guy to go except to hell, of course,” Marc Klaas told reporters after the hearing.

Davis kidnapped Polly Klaas from her bedroom in Petaluma, 40 miles (64 kilometers) north of San Francisco, in October 1993 and strangled her to death. That night, she and two friends held a slumber party and her mother slept in a nearby room. The girl’s disappearance touched off a nationwide search by thousands of volunteers. Davis was arrested two months later and led police to the child’s body, which was found in a shallow grave 50 miles (80 kilometers) north of her home in Sonoma County.

The case was a major driver behind California’s passage of a so-called “three strikes” law in 1994 that set longer sentences for repeat offenders. Lawmakers and voters approved the proposal.

California hasn’t executed anyone since 2006, when Arnold Schwarzenegger was governor. And though voters in 2016 narrowly approved a ballot measure to speed up the punishment, no condemned inmate faced imminent execution.

Since California’s last execution, its death row population has grown to house one of every four condemned inmates in the United States.

This story has been corrected to show that defense attorneys were trying to vacate the punishment phase of the trial.
