Who's doing this at UT?

Jeff Hellmer , Music, utilizes Cerego in his online synchronous course, “Jazz Appreciation.” Through Cerego, students are given instant feedback and an adaptive, customized learning path. Unlike traditional tests and quizzes, where students often guess answers and never return to the ones they didn't understand, students earn credit in the course by making progress in Cerego over time.

How Can I Do This?

Building an effective online course requires paying careful attention to both the materials of your course and how you will teach it.  Give yourself plenty of time to identify the “big picture” ideas and knowledge that you expect students to learn and translate them into the online environment.  As you assemble your ideas into a course structure, consider the technology requirements that you expect students to meet and how that impacts the ‘pacing’ of the course.

The role of assessment in an online course can make your students feel more connected to the material and give you more insight into their learning. Online tools can open up new possibilities for different (perhaps even more efficient and effective) ways to engage and assess your students as they journey through the course.

  • In an online course, create assignments that tie directly to course learning outcomes so that students see clearly the connections between what they are learning and how they are learning.
  • While using the Canvas quizzing feature is a valuable way to frequently check student learning, think of using alternate online tools to help students deepen their understanding.
  • Low stakes, frequent assessment

In a face-to-face class, you have the advantage of communicating directly to your students and making adjustments based on their responses. Although you cannot be present with students in the same way when teaching online, there are many different ways of conveying information and guiding the exploration of ideas that help students build knowledge.

  • While you can create many of your own materials for an online course, the Internet offers a wealth of resources to explore.
  • Choose a “curate or create” strategy that fits your ability to generate or find online course materials.
  • In an online course, students benefit from using materials that are tied quite closely to learning activities.
  • “Chunk” your course materials into smaller units that fit into shorter, sequenced learning modules.
  • Developing materials and fixing problems in an online course can take time.
  • Consider the hidden costs of the technology and develop support strategies for when technological issues arise.

At first glance, an online environment can seem to disconnect students as they are separated by space and time. But in reality, teaching online offers us many, and even unique ways to build the kind of connections and community that encourage collaborative learning.

  • In your syllabus and throughout the semester, clearly articulate how and when you will interact with students in an online environment so that they can develop a regular connection with you and their classmates.
  • Set good examples and model the behaviors you’d like your students to adopt.
  • Set student expectations for how you will participate in the course by being both a “speaker” (e.g., providing course materials or short lectures) and “listener” (e.g., exhibit curiosity and ask questions).
  • Each group of students is different, both in how they interact with you and with each other, and how they engage with various activities.
  • Offer students regular opportunities to provide you with feedback on how they feel they are doing throughout the semester.

Why Is This Important?

As more and more of our lives and careers are impacted by the digital world, online learning provides many and diverse benefits for students. 

In a face-to-face course, you can miss opportunities to talk and work closely with all your students because the most outspoken students can often dominate the conversation. Online courses give all of your students the chance to consider materials while contributing thoughtful responses and creating well-crafted work.

  • Because students can be required to participate more often in an online course, they can feel a greater sense of connection with you and their classmates.
  • Online courses offer students opportunities for both learning and socialization.
  • Online courses can be more accessible for students who require additional resources.

Students can do coursework on their own schedule and at their own pace. This flexibility facilitates balancing school, work and/or family obligations, enabling students to access more courses. Faculty members who teach online can also take advantage of this scheduling flexibility to balance teaching and their own personal obligations, as well as professional duties such as research, service, and mentoring students.

  • By offering flexibility in your course, students have the time to digest course materials, complete assignments in a thoughtful way and respond meaningfully to their classmates.
  • Students can often re-watch recorded lectures, repeat exercises, re-read peer discussion comments, and take the time they need to master concepts.

Despite most students now being digital natives, many of them have a limited depth or breadth of proficiency with using online tools and apps for academic and professional purposes.

  • Understanding the nuances of technology, developing an ability to communicate online, and being comfortable with conducting research online are quickly becoming important skills for almost every career in the twenty-first century.

High School Subscriptions Annual, analagous to a site license

UT Austin’s Quest Learning & Assessment tool is used by hundreds of educational institutions around the country. In an effort to recapture the costs associated with supporting the system, we charge a nominal fee to high schools with no charge to high school students . Below is a summary of the current annual high school subscription fees:

  • Texas-based high schools: $150/year
  • High school outside of Texas: $300/year

For high school institutions, this fee is the same regardless of the number of classes or students in your institution using Quest. If your institution is new to Quest, we offer a 120 day free trial to evaluate Quest before payment of the institutional subscription becomes necessary. You can check your institution's subscription status on your My Profile page. If your institution is brand new to Quest, please email us at [email protected] to obtain an institution code from us.

After you have confirmed your institution code, you can place your subscription or renew an existing subscription online, via UT’s secure purchasing portal . Each subscription lasts one year. For more information about purchasing a subscription go here .

College/University Courses Per course, textbook-like resource

The cost for university and college students is $25/course per semester/quarter. Student will only be required to pay for 2 courses per semester (or quarter), regardless of their total number of courses using Quest.

If you wish to add something to your syllabus to notify your students that Quest will be utilized in your course, feel free to use the following paragraph and adapt it to meet your needs:

This course makes use of Quest Learning and Assessment, a web-based content and homework delivery system maintained by the College of Natural Sciences at The University of Texas at Austin. This homework service will require a $25 charge per student for its use, which goes toward the maintenance and operation of the resource. Please go to https://quest.cns.utexas.edu to log in to the Quest system for this class. During the beginning of this course, when you log into Quest, you will be asked to pay via credit card (Visa, MasterCard or Discover) on a secure payment site. You have the option to wait up to 14 days to pay while continuing to use Quest for your assignments. If you are taking more than one course using Quest, you will not be charged more than $50 per semester/quarter. Quest provides mandatory instructional material for this course, similar to a textbook. How to Get More Efficient at Homework

Homework is important for a lot of reasons – on the one hand, it helps you build up your work ethic and get better at the things you’re studying. And on the other, it shows your professors how well you’ve understood the things covered in your classes. However, all of that doesn’t change the fact that homework can be overwhelming – especially when you’ve got a lot of it. 

Fortunately, there are ways to make homework easier – like getting online homework help . And apart from that, you can organize yourself in ways that make homework less difficult. And we’re here with a couple of tips on doing precisely that! 

Start With A Homework Plan – And On Time

If you want to be efficient with your homework, your #1 priority is understanding the assignment before you start. There’s nothing worse than being halfway through your homework and realizing you’ve got it all wrong and have to start over.

So, when your homework is assigned to you, write it down immediately in a planner or notebook. And if you’ve got any questions or things you’re unsure of when it comes to the assignment, make sure to ask straight away. 

Armed with that information, you can make a realistic estimate of the time it’ll take to complete that specific homework assignment. And that estimate is going to be essential to your success, particularly when you’ve got a lot of overlapping activities and homework assignments. It’ll allow you to budget your time properly. 

And speaking of time – the best time to start is right away. The fact that it isn’t due this week doesn’t change the fact that you’ll be better off finishing it early. Remember, this isn’t the only thing you have to do – you’ve got plenty of other schoolwork to do.

Find A Great Spot For Work

One of the greatest enemies of efficient homework completion is procrastination . And the main reason we procrastinate is a lack of focus – most people have short attention spans nowadays, and we’re bombarded with all sorts of content from every imaginable platform. 

So, if you’re going to study and do your homework efficiently, you will need a place that separates you from all the distractions . Forget about sitting in front of the television with your family or the kitchen filled with other family members who are eating, cooking, or cleaning.

That was a good spot when you were just a kid, and your homework was easier to do – it didn’t require nearly as much focus. However, these days, you’re going to need a study room. This will most likely be your bedroom or another quiet place that doesn’t lend itself to major distractions.

Also, while we’re on the subject of the bedroom as a study place – avoid the most common student pitfall, which is studying and doing homework on the bed. Sure, you need a certain level of comfort; but you can’t be so comfortable and warm you’ll fall asleep, especially when you’re working on something that doesn’t interest you at all. 

Instead, you’ll need a table or desk – with a comfy but ergonomic chair. And if you want to succeed in efficient studying, your phone is going to be a major issue – you can’t have it anywhere near you while you’re studying. Even if you put it on silent and don’t hear any notifications, you’re bound to take a look at it once in a while. And before you know it, entire hours will have gone by and you haven’t done any work. 

Organize Your Assignments

So, it’s time to get to work. But the question is – where do you start? 

Of course, starting with the easiest stuff will seem intuitively correct. After all, you want to ease yourself into the work before you tackle the really difficult stuff, right?

Actually, that’s far from the truth. Instead, you must first deal with the hardest parts of your homework. Remember, you’ll never have more energy during your homework session than in the beginning. That’s when you’ll be capable of summoning the most focus – and you want to use it on the stuff that matters the most. On the other hand, the simpler things won’t be as hard to solve, even when you’re tired.

Also, if you’re pressed for time and you get stuck on a problem – the last thing you should do is obsess over it all night. Sure, try to solve it to the best of your abilities; but never lose sight of the big picture. The overall goal is to complete most of your homework. You can do it later if you have time to come back to specific problems. Finally, if you want to avoid procrastination, take regular, tightly-scheduled breaks.

The UT HOMEWORK SERVICE

How to sign-up (register) for this class (#51865).

The process is MUCH simpler than it used to be. All you need to get registed for the service is 3 things. Your UTEID and password. This is how you will "get in" to register in the first place. Without a valid UTEID and password you will NOT be able to register. The class id or unique number which is 51865 . Finally, you must know your NAME and how to enter it. Enter your last name, then use a comma, then your first name. PLEASE put your name as it will appear on the official UT roster that I get.

That's it! Your ready to sign up

You WILL need (or another 3rd party viewer) in order to view and print your homeworks. Most UT Computer Labs already have this application or plug-in. If you need it for your own personal computer, you can find it from the link given here. 7.0 is the current version.

    Selective etching of silicon dioxide over silicon is a frequently used process in the manufacture of semiconductor devices. Although central to the microelectronics manufacturing process, control strategies for plasma etch systems have been limited to statistical based process control and recipe control techniques, mainly due to a lack of in-situ real-time measurements of process performance.
