Alien Code Review – a captivating sci-fi that loses its footing
- Published on 7 January 2021
- by The ScreenSlut
I have mixed feelings about Alien Code , on one hand I found the whole film very intriguing, with its almost cerebral premise – while on the other hand, with a format of telling the story from both the past and the future, by the end of the movie Alien Code feels a little like it was already over in the beginning, once the mystery has been revealed. I can see how a lot of people may feel duped by the whole experience, but for the most part, I enjoyed this budget movie. And unlike a lot of sci-fi films, it did manage to keep me hooked until the final scene.
Alien Code starts off with an unsettling scene. Our protagonist, Alex, returns home to find a dead body on his floor. But that is not the most unusual part, as he flips over the corpse, he realizes it is him. Along with this discovery, is a note saying “watch me” and a USB stick containing a recorded message. Intrigued as well as unsettled, he plays the message, and it is himself looking ragged and gaunt, telling him about the events that lead to his death. Now if that isn’t a great way to immediately hook the audience, then I don’t know what to say.
It turns out that it all starts with a job offer from an organization called ARIST, who are asking for his cryptography skills. It is all cloaked in mystery, with Alex being asked to sign an NDA before he even knows the details of the job. But with a cheque for $50,000 on the table and no other means of income due to his criminal background, he soon agrees to sign. It turns out this organization, which is supported by the NSA, is hiring him to decipher an encrypted message sent from a satellite that is purportedly from Earth, but sent from the future.
From the very start, I got Fringe vibes, and that was even before the mysterious men showed up. So if you are a fan of that TV show, this will be up your alley. By far, the acting in Alien Code was its strongest point, which for something that cannot rely on flashy graphics, makes it a worthwhile endeavour.
There are very few characters in this, except for our main protagonist and someone who later offers to help him, so acting chops was what a lot of the whole film hinged on. Both lead actors ( Azura Skye and Kyle Gallner ) did a superb job in making this story believable and making the audience emotionally connected to the plight of their characters.
Although Alex is a criminal, the way the narrative is crafted in Alien Code, we feel for his predicament in the story. With the lure of money, he ends up starting a chain of events that will have devastating consequences for everyone, while he himself is grimly affected by unforeseen consequences of his seemingly benign actions.
It is this nuance that allows Kyle Gallner to really show his acting finesse, allowing an intensity but also softness to coexist in our reluctant hero, Alex. I must also say, that though there are very little makeup effects needed in this, I was impressed by the gradual decline of Alex. With low budgets, it can be easy to make these subtle changes to his expiring condition more garish and unbelievable, but it was rather well done in Alien Code.
However, the latter portion of Alien Code did show its weaknesses, which was more in the script than anything the actors can be blamed for. As the mystery starts to reveal itself, it becomes more limp. With a story that jumps back and forth between the past and the future (depending on your point of view), you can’t help but feel a bit cheated by how it finishes. With a storyline that has set the stage for predetermination, the ending feels a bit pointless in itself.
There is also the muddiness of the ending, which unfortunately does not really give it that finished feeling that you are hoping for. The mystery is revealed for the most part, but you kinda feel unbothered by it. Though there is a lot of dialogue in Alien Code for the majority of it, I kinda felt it moved too slow in the final 10 minutes. And for me, it did not adequately explain why the encrypted message was sent in the first place. Even with the lengthy conversation between Alex and the supposed leader of these aliens, did we get any real justification?
Regardless of its fumbled ending, I did still find Alien Code to be worth 1hr 37 minutes of runtime. It is an interesting concept, that I feel like a lot of sci-fi fans will enjoy, if you ignore some of the dicey special effects, though thankfully these are few and far between.

Movie Review: Indie Sci-Fi Thriller ‘Alien Code’ Talky but Engaging
- June 15, 2018
- ★★½ , Movie Reviews
In the opening scene of the new indie thriller Alien Code , Kyle Gallner’s Alex walks into his suburban home to find an unsettling sight: a dead body on his living room floor.
But Alex is even more disturbed when he flips over the body to find… (queue Twilight Zone music)… yes, himself dead on the floor in front of him. He’s holding a note that says ‘watch me’ and an envelope with a flash drive containing a recorded message.
That startling sequence, which unfolds over Alien Code ’s opening credits, immediately hooks us in and creates a lot of good will: piecing together exactly what is going on here accounts for most of the interest in the early scenes of Alien Code .
In the video on the USB, a gaunt-looking Alex who claims to be from the future is sending the past version of himself a message. He narrates the film we are about to watch, which begins with a knock at the door and a surprising job offer.
It’s from the mysterious Rebecca (Mary McCormack), who claims to be working with a NSA-supported organization called ARIST and arrives at Alex’s door with a pair of MiB heavies. She needs the help of Alex – an expert cryptographer down on his luck – to work on a project she can’t give any details about until he signs a non-disclosure agreement.
Alex is incredulous but intrigued – especially with the $50,000 immediately transferred into his account just for signing the NDA. Soon he’s sedated and driven to a remote facility, where he wakes up the lone decoder on a top-secret project.
The project: a satellite retrieved from orbit and purportedly sent… from the future! It contains a message than cannot be decoded, which is where Alex comes in. And for the next five weeks, he works on it in isolation.
We’re merely twenty minutes through Alien Code , and things only get nuttier from there at a fever dream-like pitch: mysterious blueprints, brain tumors, and visions of strange, featureless Slenderman-like creatures, including a giant that visits Alex by his bedroom window.
This is fun for awhile, but Alien Code can’t quite sustain itself during a second half that sags under the weight of exposition and a script that tries to explain itself out of a rich sci-fi scenario. Alex eventually meets up with prior decoders Beth (Azura Skye) and later Miles Driscoll (Richard Schiff), who both suffer from the same hallucinations. But are they really hallucinations? Or visitors from another dimension?
The answers to these questions lay not in on-screen action, but in mounds of dialogue and lengthy exposition that explains this world and events not unlike the much-derided climactic scenes of The Matrix Reloaded .
For a low budget indie production, however, Alien Code deserves a lot of credit. Interest wanes as more and more gets explained, but for a good while this is an intriguing ride that keeps you glued to the screen to figure out the intricate puzzle that lies at the heart of the movie. Only in climactic scenes do budget constraints become apparent; sets and costumes could have used an upgrade in an otherworldly finale.
Written and directed by Michael G. Cooney (though the on-screen director is credited as Sam Havenhurst), Alien Code isn’t quite Primer but it is fun and diverting and even has a nice sense of humor about itself. Gallner, alone on the screen for much of the movie, is especially impressive as the progressively freaked-out protagonist.

How did he die,but not die and why? What about the other decoder? Why did she die
Fair review. Hooked my interest early; did start to flag toward the end. Geller did a great acting and keeping his toque on. For all the exposition, I was left unsure what the point being made was. Movie is worth watching.

Movie Review: Alien Code
Alex Jacobs (Kyle Gallner) is a washed-out but brilliant cryptographer. When government agents recruit him with an offer he can’t refuse, he finds out that he is being drawn into a world he was not prepared for. His job is to decrypt a message encoded in an American satellite that has been in orbit for apparently a long time, and was definitely not launched by America.
It turns out that the message is from the future and contains a blueprint to build a machine.
Alien Code is a low-budget film with fairly bad acting, awkward special effects, and a very difficult plot to follow. It takes a lot of concentration, and after a while, I just found myself giving up and just enjoyed the ride.
If you want secret message conspiracies, bad men in black, caricatures of government agents, time travel, scientific brilliance stereotypes, it’s all in this movie.
After you’re done watching, you’ll forget about it all quickly.

End of the day this shit gets boring after the first thirty minutes and doesn't really recover. With that said I do wanna applaud this making an earnest attempt on pretty much no budget to dive head first into the high strangeness of the paranormal. Alien Code is just as good a title was The Men, but the latter does focus on the best aspect of the film. It's version of the men in black is the closet I've seen depicted from stories. There's a few ways they could've taken it even further, but still it's better than most who've tried.
The major downside is the whole thing is just bouncing between about three locations with two to three characters…

Kyle Gallery owns his character Alex Jacob’s! He is “ recruited” to help the “ government” de-code messages on a computer message. Something technical like this! Anyway he needs the money. He signs an NDA and immediately a huge amount of money is in his bank account. He really is afraid of the demands on him and “exactly” what’s going on? I’m confused too. Then the “ MEN IN BLACK” show up on his front door! “ NO NO DONT LET THEM IN”! I screamed! Ahh too late. Alex lets them in! Scary ! And we are only 20 minutes in! Excellent drama. Enjoy it!

Maybe it’s the insomnia. Maybe it’s because I’m a slut for time travel. But I thought this movie was going to be Timeline bad but it actually turned out to be pretty good. There’s nothing spectacular about it— it’s basically an amalgamation of Contact, Arrival and Fringe— but it’s definitely going to have me staring out the window thinking my thoughts for a hot minute and that’s why I watch movies.
Review by Brandon Williams ★★
A valiant effort, but bit off more than it could chew. So many different ideas and theories are thrown around and it's interesting. You hope it'll all coalesce in the last act, but it doesn't. No questions are answered, no conclusion can be drawn, and there are aspects that I cannot justify even within the reality of the film. An absurd soundtrack adds to the chaos which this film is.
As another reviewer stated, and I like the analogy, it's goals were along the lines of Arrival... except done in the least elegant way possible. Clumsy info dumps, threads that don't resolve, motives that remain completely unclear, characters you cannot form connections with. It's Arrival in an opposite universe. 🤷♂️

Alien Code , also known as The Men , is a film that exemplifies the impact of limited budgets on overall production. While boasting an impressively well-written and researched script, along with near-flawless performances, the movie falls short due to lacklustre cinematography and editing.
The strength of Alien Code lies in its captivating storyline and meticulous attention to detail. The script delivers an intriguing narrative that kept me engaged. The premise explores time and interdimensional beings. The effort put into researching and crafting the story is evident.
The performances are commendable, with the actors delivering their roles with skill and conviction. They manage to bring depth and authenticity to their characters. I wonder why Kyle Gallner isn't in more movies.

Michael G. Cooney’s ‘Alien Code’ suffers from a few flaws here and there. However, it’s far from the worst sci-fi thriller involving aliens I’ve seen.

I liked the movie a lot and have suggested it to friends and family. I’m not big on conspiracy theories or believing far fetched notions, usually. For me this movie made sense and I feel like there could be some things that happen in the movie that could be close to reality in some ways. But that’s just my opinion. I feel we’ll all know the truth in the end….

Alien Movies: The IGN Community Ranking, From Best to Worst
Here's how our readers decided in the ongoing face-off match between the eight current movies..
There's a new Alien movie on the horizon, so it's a good time to check in on where the IGN community stands on the age-old debate of Alien Vs Aliens. It is a battle that will rage on eternally, but as of today – with nearly 200,000 votes logged – there is a clear favorite. Here's how the eight Alien movies are ranked , from best to worst.
What's The Best Alien Movie?
Pick a winner.
Things could change if Team Alien logs on in force, but right now the margin of victory is fairly decisive, with Aliens winning 78.9% of its matches and Alien defeating its rival 73.7% of the time.
Where do you think Alien: Romulus will end up in this list? It's a safe bet it's not going to topple either of the first two, but there's a fairly massive gap between second and third place; Prometheus has won just 49% of its matches, so Romulus doesn't have a very high bar to clear in order to push it down the list when it's added to the Face-Off on August 16, 2024. That's the optimistic prediction, of course (the trailer certainly does a good job of raising hopes!) but even being pessimistic it's hard to believe it could dethrone Requiem as the very worst the series has to offer.
Where do you predict Alien: Romulus will land on the IGN community ranking of the Alien series?
In this article.

“Don’t Breathe” and “Evil Dead” director Fede Álvarez is reviving the “Alien” franchise next year with the release of a new sequel (reportedly titled “ Alien: Romulus “), which he co-wrote with Rodo Sayagues. The film will tell a new story within the “Alien” universe after the film franchise came to a halt following Ridley Scott ‘s prequel films “Prometheus” (2012) and “Alien: Covenant” (2017). The latter’s middling box office ended Scott’s run. “Alien: Romulus” will be the first “Alien” movie released since Disney acquired Fox.

Álvarez was “terrified” to meet in person with Scott after Scott watched “Alien: Romulus” for the first time, but he knew he had to be there in person to listen to Scott’s thoughts.
“Even if he didn’t ask for it, I was gonna go there and sit at a table and look at him and get it,” the director said. “Even if he was gonna say, ‘You destroyed my legacy,’ I wanted to be in front of him and see him in the eye. I didn’t want to get an email where it says ‘Ridley says…’
20th Century Studios and Disney have yet to reveal much about the “Alien: Romulus” plot, outside of teasing that it centers on “a group of young people on a distant world, who find themselves in a confrontation with the most terrifying life form in the universe.” “Priscilla” breakout Cailee Spaeny is leading the cast opposite David Jonsson (“Industry”), Archie Renaux (“Shadow and Bone”), Isabela Merced (“Rosaline”), Spike Fearn (“The Batman”) and Aileen Wu (“Away From Home”).
“Alien: Romulus” is set for release on Aug. 16, 2024.

‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ Could Demolish a Major Box Office Record
'bad boys: ride or die' just pushed the franchise past a history-making milestone, ‘inside out 2’ poised to deliver one of the biggest domestic box office debuts for an animated film.
After a couple of quiet and uncertain years for the Alien franchise, following the disappointing critical and commercial reception of Alien: Covenant , and Disney's Fox acquisition, fans of the series will finally be able to mark their calendars with a date to return to the franchise as Fede Álvarez 's Alien movie gets an August 16, 2024 release date.
The film hasn't yet been officially titled, however it did show up in a production listing posted by the Film & Television Industry Alliance as Alien: Romulus , though this could be just a working title. While details regarding the plot of the film are sparse, a synopsis for the film via 20th Century Studios reads: "In this ninth entry in the immensely popular and enduring film series, a group of young people on a distant world find themselves in a confrontation with the most terrifying life form in the universe." The film is set to star Cailee Spaeny , Isabela Merced , Archie Renaux , David Jonsson , Spike Fearn and Aileen Wu . Unfortunately not returning is Sigourney Weaver , who recently clarified that her time in space was well and truly over , saying, "that ship has sailed. I’m very happy doing what I’m doing. I put in my time in space!"
The film will be the first entry into the franchise following a series of misfires from Ridley Scott ; Alien: Covenant and its predecessor Prometheus were met with tepid reviews, with fans concerned with the direction Scott's prequels were taking the series, many criticizing how they stripped the titular alien of its mystery and lumbered it with an unnecessary origin story. The new film is said to have no connection to those films, returning to the franchise's horror roots with Álvarez at the helm, the director responsible for titles such as 2013's terrifying Evil Dead reboot/sequel and 2016's Don't Breathe .

The Alien Franchise Is Expanding to TV
As well as the new film, work is also underway on an Alien TV series which is to be separate from Álvarez's project. The series will be lead by Noah Hawley and will star Sydney Chandler ( Don't Worry Darling ). That project does not currently have a release date, but fans will be able to see the Xenomorph on the big screen once again when the upcoming film hits theaters on August 16, 2024.

Much of the dialogue is ropy and underdone as well as more complicated than necessary and the momentum in the pace is not as tight. The low budget does show in particularly the less than special and under-budgeted effects that had a shoestring 80s film look. The ending is ridiculous, confusing and a big anti-climax.

I have mixed feelings about Alien Code, on one hand I found the whole film very intriguing, with its almost cerebral premise - while on the other hand, with a format of telling the story from both the past and the future, by the end of the movie Alien Code feels a little like it was already over in the beginning, once the mystery has been revealed.

The answers to these questions lay not in on-screen action, but in mounds of dialogue and lengthy exposition that explains this world and events not unlike the much-derided climactic scenes of The Matrix Reloaded.. Critique #1: It's Too Slow! Alien Code is not an action-packed, mile-a-minute thriller, especially not compared to plenty of other movies. It does take its time and could be cut to a shorter run-time. In fact, I'll be honest: It might have worked better as a half-hour episode of some anthology.
