Squid Game and PhD Memes

PhD Memes have become an increasingly popular way for graduate students to cope with the challenges and stresses of pursuing their doctoral degrees.

In recent times, these memes have taken a playful twist by incorporating references to the hit series “Squid Game.” Just like the contestants in the show, PhD students often face intense competition and daunting challenges in their academic journeys.

The humor in these #SquidGame PhD Meme lies in the way they humorously juxtapose the high-stakes world of academia with the dramatic games depicted in the series. These memes provide a much-needed source of comic relief for scholars immersed in the world of research, offering a momentary escape from the rigors of their intellectual pursuits.

Grad School Memes For Future PhD Recipients

Grad school is one of the craziest things you can willingly subject yourself to. You have to work 16 hours a day on one very specific subject, teach 3 courses, and live off of a $15,000 stipend. Sounds simple enough, right? Grad school is largely different for everyone, but there are certainly different types of postgraduate academics. There are the people who are in it for the long haul, and for the love of the game, aspiring to be academics in school forever. There are those who go into grad school straight after undergrad because they don't know what to do with their lives. There are those purely in it for mercenary reasons, getting that professional degree and scramming as soon as possible. Whatever kind of grad student you are, you're all united by the emotion of suffering. One needs to commiserate with their fellow grad students, and what better way to do that than through memes .

Jianjie Ma, PhD, Awarded $3.4 Million to Develop a Novel Protein Therapeutic to Improve High-Risk Corneal Transplantation

July 12, 2024 by [email protected]

Jianjie Ma

Corneal transplants are typically successful in low-risk allograft recipients. However, a vascularized or inflamed host bed is considered high-risk and results in significant increases in graft rejection rates. Ideally, increasing corneal transplantation success will involve mitigating the inflammatory and vascularization response, as well as promoting the regenerative capacity during the healing process. This project aims to develop a novel protein therapeutic – MG53, a protein with multi-cellular functions in tissue-repair and regeneration, to enhance the outcome of high-risk corneal transplantations.

Collaborators on the project include Ajay Sharma, PhD, at Chapman University; Heather Chandler, PhD, and Hua Zhu, PhD, at The Ohio State University; and Ki Ho Park, PhD, and Chengli Shen, MD, PhD, at the University of Virginia.

Biden Mixes Up Kamala Harris and Donald Trump After Doing the Same With Zelensky and Putin

The gaffe referring to his own running mate as “Vice President Trump” during a closely watched news conference came shortly after he introduced the president of Ukraine as “President Putin.”

Biden Mixes Up Trump and Harris

In an attempt to defend vice president kamala harris, president biden fumbled his answer to a reporter’s question and referred to “vice president trump” instead of vice president harris..

“What concerns do you have about Vice President Harris’s ability to beat Donald Trump if she were at the top of the ticket?“ “Look, I wouldn’t have picked Vice President Trump to be vice president did I think she was not qualified to be president. So let’s start there. No. 1. The fact is that — the consideration is that I think I’m the most qualified person to run for president. I beat him once, and I will beat him again.”

By Chris Cameron

Reporting from Washington

  • July 11, 2024

President Biden referred to Vice President Kamala Harris as “Vice President Trump,” flubbing his response to the first question posed to him in a much-awaited news conference during a summit of NATO leaders.

Mr. Biden was asked by a Reuters reporter if he had concerns about Ms. Harris’s ability to beat former President Donald J. Trump if he stepped aside, something he has said emphatically that he will not do despite pressure from many within his party.

“Look, I wouldn’t have picked Vice President Trump to be vice president if I didn’t think she was qualified to be president,” he said.

Mr. Biden had another gaffe earlier in the evening, introducing President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine as “President Putin” after a meeting of NATO leaders in Washington.

“I want to hand it over to the president of Ukraine, who has as much courage as he does determination,” Mr. Biden said from the lectern with Mr. Zelensky at his side. “Ladies and gentlemen: President Putin.”

Mr. Biden stepped away from the lectern before realizing his mistake.

“President Putin?” Mr. Biden said as he returned to the microphone. “We’re going to beat President Putin. President Zelensky. I’m so focused on beating Putin. We got to worry about it. Anyway.”

Mr. Biden turned to shake Mr. Zelensky’s hand. The Ukrainian president joked, “I’m better,” to which Mr. Biden replied, “You are a hell of a lot better.”

Biden Calls Zelensky ‘Putin’ at NATO Event

President biden introduced president volodymyr zelensky of ukraine as president putin before correcting himself on thursday afternoon after a nato meeting..

“Now I want to hand it over to the president of Ukraine, who has as much courage as he has determination. Ladies and gentlemen, President Putin. President Putin! You can beat President Putin. President Zelensky! I’m so focused on beating Putin, we’ve got to worry about it. Anyway, Mr. President - ” “I’m better.” “You are a hell of a lot better.”

Video player loading

The gaffes could not have been more ill-timed for the Biden campaign, coming as the president battles a crisis of confidence among Democrats considering if he is the best candidate to beat Mr. Trump in November. The news conference where Mr. Biden mixed up Mr. Trump and Ms. Harris was much anticipated by Democratic defenders and skeptics of the president’s re-election campaign, who planned to scrutinize the appearance to gauge his viability as a candidate.

Mr. Biden’s remarks mixing up Mr. Putin and Mr. Zelensky, which happened roughly around 5:40 p.m. Eastern time, was included by ABC, CBS and NBC in their 6:30 p.m. newscasts, the most-watched news programs in the country.

The Biden campaign made a quick effort to put a humorous spin on the Putin error. An official social media account shared a clip of the verbal slip , focusing on Mr. Zelensky’s joke that he was “better.”

The move to further highlight the error perplexed some, even within the Trump campaign. A social media account run by a pro-Trump super PAC joked that “one of our employees logged into the wrong account” and mistakenly shared the gaffe from the Biden campaign account.

Soon after, Mr. Trump mocked Mr. Biden in a post on his social media site for mixing him up with Ms. Harris, linking a clip of the gaffe with the text “Great job, Joe!”

Please, Make It Stop

The “hawk tuah” girl doesn’t need to be a superstar. she can just be someone in a funny video..

Last week, I wrote a story about Haliey Welch , better known as the “Hawk Tuah” girl, who is enjoying a spurt of viral fame thanks to her puerile response to a man-on-the-street YouTube interviewer. (She was asked what she does in bed to make her man “go crazy,” to which Welch replied that she gives him the old hawk tuah —in layman’s terms, she’ll “spit on that thang.”) The meteoric rise of the Hawk Tuah meme then became a useful locus from which to examine the silent majority of low-information social media users—the Barstool clan, the Call Her Daddy fanatics, the men who post their doomed four-leg college football parlays on Twitter. This group has become better known as the “ Zynternet ” and, taken as a political faction, it represents the Americans who don’t follow political news, who spend a lot of time on the fairly disengaged “Hawk Tuah” internet, and who are overwhelmingly voting for Trump. I merely postulated that the Democrats had wasted a huge opportunity to co-opt her—something the right did in about 60 seconds—and called it a day.

And, really, that’s all there was to say about “Hawk Tuah” girl. We sufficiently bled the discourse dry of all valuable insight, and we’re ready to move on to fresher hells. And yet, for some reason, my brethren in the media have not gotten this message. Yesterday Rolling Stone unveiled a fawning Haliey Welch exclusive that is so overheated in its posture that I almost wonder if it’s satire . Here is the subhead of that piece:

She went viral for a sex joke, but Haliey Welch is much more—a charming Gen Z Dolly Parton who’s rightfully becoming America’s Sweetheart.

A charming Gen Z Dolly Parton! Lord have mercy. Look, I understand how the game works. Journalists and editors alike are incentivized to gussy up their framing with provocative declarations, and given that all celebrity-focused journalism in the 2020s is a bloodsucking negotiation between various access arbiters and brand interests, I can imagine how the Powers That Be decreed that Welch’s name be invoked adjacent to, you know, one of the most iconic performers to ever walk the earth. But, I swear to God, we cannot keep moving the goalposts this far. Hawk Tuah is a funny meme! I had a nice time thinking about how it reflected an oft-ignored undercurrent in American culture. I even went on NPR to talk about it! And I’m sure Welch enjoyed her brief tour of the Barstool podcast network. But it’s over now, man. Let’s move on before it gets embarrassing.

I’ve been on the internet long enough to remember when there was a universally established life cycle for viral characters. The “ Numa Numa ” kid uploaded his video to Newgrounds and enjoyed an in-the-know ubiquity among forum dwellers in the early 2000s, without any predatory talent agents harboring fantasies of him splayed out on the cover of Spin. (Others that fall into this category include Tay Zonday , the Star Wars kid , and whoever made the “ End of Ze World ” Flash cartoon.) But unfortunately, in our modern hypercapitalized digital ecosystem, everyone who has even the faintest whiff of virality is now encouraged to mine that moment for all it’s worth—morphing, say, a cute, profane YouTube clip into the job. Think of the tools currently at your disposal! Cameo, OnlyFans, ersatz Instagram sponcon for poorly defined health drinks, all working in conjunction to ensure that Being Online is permanently tinged with sweaty desperation from all parties. (Apparently Welch is developing a reality show ? Jesus.) Everyone wants to be a star, but really, most people who have a viral moment on the internet were meant to only ever be a meme.

But who knows? Maybe I’m wrong and Welch’s career is poised to skyrocket to unfathomable heights. Perhaps she’ll next headline Stagecoach or appear in a forthcoming incarnation of the Fast and Furious franchise, and her fateful blow-job joke will be seen as a strange, divinatory omen of authentic stardom. If so, I will happily eat my words. Until then, if you are lucky (or unlucky) enough to brush against white-hot virality, maybe set your aspirations a smidge lower than Dolly Parton. There is so much grace and dignity in enjoying your 15 minutes of fame before returning to real life.

'SpongeBob' turns 25: We celebrate his birthday with a dive into Bikini Bottom

His house is not a pineapple under the sea, nor is he neighbors with an octopus. But for Tom Kenny, “ SpongeBob SquarePants ” remains as delightful as a Krabby Patty.

For the last quarter century, the actor has voiced the sparky sea sponge on Nickelodeon's hit animated series, which premiered July 17, 1999. Since then, it’s seeped into his life in sundry ways: Over dinner, he’ll test out new jokes with his wife, Jill Talley, who voices Karen and Squidina on the show. His band, Tom Kenny and the Hi-Seas , often works the “SpongeBob” theme song into its set lists. And on July 13, he’s teaming up with Bill Fagerbakke (aka Patrick Star ) as their indelible characters host "Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards" (8 EDT/PDT), also streaming on Paramount+.

“‘SpongeBob’ feels more real to me than real life lately,” jokes Kenny, who turns 62 on the day of the ceremony. “I think Bikini Bottom is actually reality, and we’re just a dream SpongeBob and Patrick are having. It’s like a ‘ Black Mirror ’ episode.”

The offbeat show was initially created by Stephen Hillenburg, a marine science educator, as “SpongeBob Ahoy!” about a group of pals living in an ocean-floor city. At first, Nickelodeon wanted him to be a school-age child rather than a fast-food fry cook.

At early auditions, “they said, ‘We’re looking for super realistic kids’ voices. We don’t want it to be stylized at all,’” Kenny recalls. But Hillenburg pushed back on aging down the ever-optimistic SpongeBob, agreeing to add a boating school where he strives to get his driver’s license.

More: The best and worst TV shows for toddlers and preschoolers

Fagerbakke, 66, came aboard after Kenny was cast. “It was the most unusual audition I’ve ever had,” he says. “It was in a conference room where this quiet fellow played me a cassette of Tom doing SpongeBob. He said, ‘Here’s a picture of Patrick. He’s the best friend, so he needs to balance him out.' Characters of irregular intellectual quality were kind of my wheelhouse, so I got lucky there.”

Within its first month on the air, “SpongeBob” edged out “Pokémon” as the highest-rated Saturday morning kids’ series on TV. By 2002, it eclipsed “Rugrats” as the most-watched children’s show on cable – and more than a third of its audience were adults.

“The first time it hit me was when I’d pull up to the elementary school to pick up my daughter and I’d get greeted by 15 7-year-olds screaming, ‘Patrick! Patrick!’ “ Fagerbakke says. “And then I started getting comments from parents, being like, ‘I’m so happy there’s something I can watch with my kids.’ “

Kenny considers “SpongeBob” to be a “statistical anomaly” in the vein of Fox's “ The Simpsons ,” which just wrapped its 35 th season. (“It’s confounding,” he says. “Stuff isn’t supposed to last this long.”) He credits the show’s staying power to Hillenburg, who died in 2018 at age 57 from complications of Lou Gehrig’s disease.

“One thing I learned from him is that character drives everything,” Kenny says. “You shouldn’t violate who they are or stuff they would do for the sake of a laugh. Steve was very strict about that. He always said SpongeBob was the hardest character to write for. He’s so elastic; he’s very complex.”

With 14 seasons and more than 500 11-minute shorts, “SpongeBob” has spawned a branding empire, with theme-park rides, spinoff movies, a Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade float and even a Broadway musical . The affable sponge has been emblazoned on kids’ backpacks and water bottles, as well as adult merchandise.

“I remember early on, Patrick T-shirts and boxer shorts were selling in double and triple XL sizes at rates that had not been seen before. I thought, ‘These are for dudes – and not small dudes, either,’” Kenny says. “You’d go to the grocery store and see SpongeBob Fruit Roll-Ups and Kraft Mac and Cheese. I was like, ‘Wow, OK, I’m liking this!’ Licensing is everything – that’s our lifeline.”

Despite a popular meme , those brand deals did not include “SpongeBob” tampons. “I’m guessing that wouldn’t make it out of the board meeting,” Kenny adds with a laugh. However, “there are ‘ SpongeBob ’ toilet training seats . We’re teaching children many things: about friendship, being yourself, letting your freak flag fly – and also how to poop.”

I want to diversify my investments with gold, so I asked a financial planner what I should know before starting

  • While many buy gold as a hedge against inflation, CFP Jake Skelhorn told me that's a risky move.
  • Instead, buying gold makes sense if it's a way to diversify my investments — and gold IRAs work well.
  • Before buying gold, he told me to consider all the other costs I might face.

Insider Today

My husband and I have always kept our finances and investments separate. But recently, we have started to commingle some of our money and work together on joint goals. Last year, we opened up a joint bank account and credit card to fund our family expenses.

This year, we're strategizing a few ways we can invest our cash together to diversify our portfolios. One thing we've been discussing is the option of investing in gold bars .

Some of our friends recently bought gold bars to diversify their investment portfolios. Since we were interested in this, we decided to speak with certified financial planner Jake Skelhorn to learn more.

1. It might not be the best option for inflation

When I asked Skelhorn why people buy gold bars, he said the most common reason is that they want to use them to hedge inflation .

"When the market gets rocky, people try to seek something that seems safer or keeps them away from inflation," he said. "But investing in gold isn't always the best way to fight off inflation."

That's because Skelhorn said the price of gold can fluctuate drastically. Even though the demand for gold will increase when there's economic uncertainty, the actual prices of gold aren't tied to inflation but to supply and demand instead.

If you want to protect your money from inflation, Skelhorn recommends a longer-term strategy involving government bonds or the stock market.

2. Gold is taxed at a higher rate

Skelhorn emphasized that gold is taxed at a higher rate than normal investments.

"Capital gain taxes for gold are 28% when it's held over a year," he said. "Other assets like stocks or real estate could be taxed at 0-20%, depending on your total income for the year."

But if you're looking to invest in a tax-friendly investment vehicle, Skelhorn mentioned it's possible to instead invest in a gold IRA .

"That way, you don't have to pay any capital gain tax when you buy or sell the funds inside the IRA," he said.

3. There's no income related to investing in gold

Another factor Skelhorn advised me to consider is that I can't earn income by buying gold.

"Comparing it to stocks or bonds, which could yield interest or dividends, there's no income when you buy gold bars because you're just holding them," he said.

Skelhorn added that the only way to make money off gold bars is by selling them for more than you bought them.

4. Investing in gold can diversify your portfolio

Skelhorn did confirm that investing in gold could be a good way to diversify my portfolio.

"Gold isn't correlated with other asset classes like the stock market or bonds," he said. "So if the stock market goes down, it doesn't mean the price of gold will go down with it."

However, he said that before buying gold bars, we should understand there could be added fees depending on how we buy and store it.
