8 Reasons Why the Porsche 911 Is Considered the Greatest Sports Car of All Time

Porsche recently unveiled the eighth generation of its iconic 911 sports car. With a familiar albeit more muscular look, the new 992 Carrera has a more powerful twin-turbocharged flat-six engine than its predecessor, a longer wheelbase and wider nose, a new PDK gearbox, and even more groundbreaking tech.

It's not just the looks that are similar to previous generations, though — you really do need to be a 911 geek to spot the exterior changes. The basic layout of rear drive/rear engine, six-cylinder boxer engine, and balance between drivability and performance continue to be the cornerstone of the 911 experience.

And the reason for that? Because the Porsche 911 has legions of fans worldwide. Almost 9,000 911s were sold in the United States alone last year. It is quite simply the best sports car in the world. Not convinced? Here are eight reasons why.

1. The engine is in the back

On paper and on the asphalt, rear-engine layouts often seem like a bad idea. There's a reason why, aside from smart cars, the Renault Twingo, and the 911, cars don't have a large chunk of weight hung precariously behind the rear axle. Having weight over the rear driving wheels gives better traction on acceleration — a good thing — but combined with high power, having the engine in the back means the natural habitat of these cars has often been sticking nose-out of a ditch at the exit of a bend.

But this layout makes the 911 appealing for two reasons.

First, almost no car will stir your soul like the 911. The handling is a unique and visceral experience, with a heavy, grippy rear end and light front that varies depending on the position of your right foot. Turn-in is sharp, the car feels agile and, in later models especially, the grip is otherworldly. Altogether the chassis is alive with communication. Overcooking it is often the point of no return, so driving requires the ultimate commitment in exchange for the ultimate reward.

Secondly, because Porsche's masochistic engineers have stuck with this unorthodox layout, they have been forced to engineer the 911 like no other car. Now, with four-wheel drive, rear-axle steering, constantly upgraded Porsche Active Suspension Management to actively and continuously control the damping force of each individual wheel, Porsche Torque Vectoring Plus, Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control to minimize body roll, and ceramic brakes, the 911 is a more complete package than any other car on the planet.

2. Air-cooled engine

The 911 is a thoroughbred sports car, but also a distant cousin of the Volkswagen Beetle. The two cars were designed by the same family, after all: Ferdinand Porsche designed the Beetle, while his grandson Ferdinand Alexander Porsche was behind the 911.

The Beetle had an air-cooled engine for a number of reasons: simplicity, reliability, better aerodynamics because it didn't need a radiator at the front, lighter weight, and the need for less space. And through its predecessor 356 model (designed by Ferry Porsche, son of Ferdinand and Ferdinand Alexander's dad), the Porsche 911 gained an air-cooled engine, too, albeit with six cylinders. The flat, boxer layout also had a low center of gravity, another bonus for handling.

It wasn't until the 996 iteration came around in 1997 that Porsche switched to a flat-six water-cooled unit. If you were a lifetime subscriber to Porsche Traditionalist magazine — had there been such a publication — you would have been horrified. Despite Porsche's best efforts to make the modern water-cooled unit sound like the air-cooled version, and bring the company's basic engine tech out of the ’50s, many will still argue to this day that the air-cooled engine is the only proper-sounding Porsche engine.

But for argument's sake, let's just say that all Porsche flat-sixes sound unique and are what set the 911 series aside from all others.

So what does it sound like? This is no frantic, high-revving Ferrari V8, but rather a breathy, mechanical clatter that is at the same time tuneful and rhythmic. It's mechanical rather than manufactured, and the engine note always has the last word over the exhaust note. Imagine throwing a chainsaw into a barrel of ball bearings and you get the idea. 3. There's a 911 for everyone

Back in 1965, there was even a Porsche 911 for people who wanted to drive slowly. It was called the 912 and shared the same basic four-cylinder engine as the earlier 356 (not a Beetle as some might tell you), with a top speed of 116mph. Two decades later, the world got the Ruf CTR, a 469-horsepower twin-turbo 911 that shared the same body and basic platform but hit 211mph on a 15.5-mile test oval in Ehra-Lessien, Germany.

The Porsche 911 has been through countless iterations, from tuners to standalone manufacturers such as Ruf, which creates original vehicles like in the clip above using unmarked Porsche chassis. There are even companies like Singer, which creates reimaginings of classic Porsches. Whether it's a 1988 Carrera CS or an early-’70s Carrera RS 2.7, if there isn't at least one Porsche 911 that you desire with all your heart, you might want to check your pulse.

4. They're easy to live with

Supercars have only just become drivable. Before Audi took over at Lamborghini and Honda started making supercars, driving the fastest cars on Earth was terrifying both while going fast and slow.

Parking a Lambo Countach in a city was a performance most rappers could do without. Even if the clutch didn't overheat and the V12 explode in the process, they were high-on impossible to see out of. These days, Rick Ross could ghost ride his Murciélago through a Starbucks drive-thru without even stalling the engine.

One thing 911s always had going for them was that they were a doddle to drive at slow speeds, with a comfortable luxurious interior and good visibility coupled with everyday reliability on par with a family saloon. Off the leash, they could effortlessly stay up with cars that were way more exotic (and expensive).

Add to that trunk space at the front and two smallish rear seats, and you have a sports car that's actually practical (and if you own a Turbo version, you have a supercar that's practical). You can even get an official bike rack or roof box for your surfboard, if you'd like.

5. They were built to compete

A lot of car companies claim motorsport heritage, but no one bar Ferrari has greater bragging rights than Porsche. For the Stuttgart company, there is no difference between sports cars and race cars, the two feeding into each other. What is learned on the track filters out on to public roads. In fact, some of the race cars are modified road cars.

On June 10, 1956, a Porsche 550A RS (the same model James Dean died in) scored the company's first victory at the Targa Florio endurance race in Sicily. Since then, Porsche has gone on to participate in almost every type of motorsport going, and often winning. That includes Le Mans, IndyCar, Formula 1, the Carrera Cup, rally, rallycross, and even the Paris-Dakar Rally.

The 911 has had five decades of racing success, competing in the Rally Monte Carlo a year after launch and winning three years later. The Porsche 911 Carrera RSR won Targa Florio, Daytona 24 Hours, and Sebring 12 Hours in 1973, and a Porsche 935 took victory at Le Mans in 1979 (Hollywood icon Paul Newman was one of the drivers of the 935 that placed second). In short, if you buy a 911, you are buying a slice of motorsport history.

And if you want to race for real, it's not that difficult. According to Michael Dreiser, manager of Porsche International's Motorsport One-Make Series, all you need to compete in the prestigious GT3 Cup is "the right racing license — this differs a little bit from series to series, based on whether they run on the international FIA calendar or purely locally — and the right car allowed in the series. This is usually the current model of the 911 GT3 Cup, but some series also allow previous models."

The Ferrari F40 might have been the mouthy poster boy of the ’80s supercar world, but it had one foil: the Porsche 959. While the car from Maranello was a recipe of a race car with number plates and raw carbon fiber, the 959 showed that clever technology could create a car with the docility of the 911 it was based on, including a luxurious, gadget-laden leather interior and a 197mph top speed just 4mph shy of the F40.

Arriving in 1986, the 959 featured the kind of tech you'd expect to see on top performance cars today, including a biturbo engine with water-cooled four-valve cylinder heads, an electronically controlled chassis, and an all-wheel-drive system, as well as an aerodynamically optimized body, all of which was built on the basis of the 911 model line in a limited run of 292 cars.

7. They look great

You're probably thinking a McLaren 600LT in tarocco orange is the way to hit up Church’s Chicken, and maybe it is — the first couple of times. But there's a limit to how many times a fake-Supreme-wearing 15-year-old can snap a selfie next to you sitting in traffic before things start getting irritating. Spec a 911 Turbo S in agate gray metallic and no one is going to miss it, you'll get the same ballistic levels of performance,  and you won't become a social media star every time you're sat at a crossing.

8. You can own one and never lose money

Probably. Owning a Porsche is never going to be dirt cheap, but you can get the keys to a 911 without selling a kidney. Every model is popular, so there are always plenty around. Armed with the right knowledge and an independent check, you can pick up a late-’90s 996 for $15,000 — brand new it would have set you back north of $80,000.

Factor in the same reliability as the average Audi and you have a car that should be good for decades to come and six-figure mileages. Then, when you come to sell it, there has been no 911 that hasn't bottomed-out price-wise before becoming a fast-appreciating classic. Snap up a 996, the least desirable model out there, take care of it, and then cash it in for two or three times the price in 10 years. What's not to love?

How Pune Porsche Teen Went From Essay Writing To Observation Home In 3 Days

Fifteen hours after a late-night Porsche dash in Pune left two 24-year-old software engineers dead, the 17-year-old at the wheels was at his home, thanks to a bail order with conditions that were widely seen as appallingly flimsy. Three days later, he is at a child observation home, waiting for a decision on whether he will be tried as an adult, and his father in jail.

On Sunday, hours after the chilling accident, the Juvenile Justice Board had granted bail to the teen, who was caught drinking on camera shortly before he drove the high-end car at over 240 km per hour, with a set of conditions. The conditions included writing a 300-word essay on "road accident and their solution", studying traffic rules for 15 days and attending counselling for his drinking habit and psychiatric treatment.

News of the bail and its conditions sparked massive outrage on social media, with many alleging that the teenager, son of a prominent Pune realtor, had been let off very lightly for a heinous crime that led to two untimely deaths. Pune police said they had urged the board for permission to try the accused as an adult, but it refused.

Amid growing outrage, police on Monday registered a case against the teen's father under the Juvenile Justice Act. A case was also registered against the owners and staff of two bars that served alcohol to the 17-year-old and his two friends.

The next day, the realtor father was arrested after GPS tracking foiled his elaborate escape plan that involved multiple vehicles. The bar owners and staff were taken into custody too. In a surprise visit, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis reached Pune to review the case. 

Responding to the Pune police's review petition, the Juvenile Justice Board issued a notice to the teenaged accused. During the hearing, the board modified its earlier order, remanding the accused in an observation home till June 5. On police's plea for permission to try him as an adult, the board has sought a reply from the defendant.

Speaking to NDTV, Pune Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar said they moved two applications with the court on Sunday. "One was this that is a heinous crime and the accused must be tried as an adult. Our second application was that till the time this is decided, the accused must be at an observation home. These applications were disallowed that day. So we sought a review, we have got a favourable order on both counts today," he said.

The top cop said the accused's blood test reports, which are yet to come in, are "not very important". "This case is not about an accident in which a mistake happened under the influence of alcohol and people died. Our case is that he had full knowledge that his conduct... he parties in two bars, rashly drives a car without a number plate on a narrow, congested street. He was fully in his senses and he knew that people may die because of his actions. Our case is under Section 304 of IPC which carries a jail term of 10 years. And this is not our stand after the media outrage, this is our stand since Sunday."

Mr Kumar said the accused's counsel has been asked to respond by tomorrow to the police plea of trying him as an adult. "We believe we will get the permission to try him as an adult," he said.

The accused's lawyer, Prashant Patil, told the media that the teenager will be at a rehabilitation home till June 5. "During this time, he will undergo counselling and other steps will be taken to bring him to the mainstream," he said.

In Madhya Pradesh, over a thousand kilometres away, the families of Ashwini Koshtha and Aneesh Awadhiya, who were killed in the accident, are living through their worst nightmare. The families have termed this "murder" and not an accident.

Speaking to NDTV, Aneesh's mother Savita Awadhiya broke down last night. "He killed my son. Now, I will never be able to meet my son," she said. "It is the boy's mistake, you can call it murder, because if he had not made such a big mistake, no one would have died. If only his family members had paid attention, today my son would have been alive. This is murder," she said.

Ashwini Koshta's mother Mamata Koshta told news agency PTI that she was very talented and had so many dreams. "We were supposed to send her off in a palanquin (to the groom's house) after her marriage. Now we are forced to carry her body on a bier," she said.

"We want justice for Ashwini. The minor boy and his parents should get stringent punishment. They have not raised him properly. They should have not given him the car," she said.

The 911 can trace its roots back to sketches drawn by Ferdinand “Butzi” Porsche in 1959.[5] The Porsche 911 classic was developed as a much more powerful, larger, more comfortable replacement for the Porsche 356, the company’s first model. The new car made its public debut at the 1963[1] Frankfurt Motor Show (German: Internationale Automobil-Ausstellung).[6] The car presented at the auto show had a non-operational mockup of the 901 engine, receiving a working one in February 1964.[5]

It originally was designated as the “Porsche 901” (901 being its internal project number).

82 cars were built as 901s.[5] However, Peugeot protested on the grounds that in France it had exclusive rights to car names formed by three numbers with a zero in the middle. So, instead of selling the new model with another name in France, Porsche changed the name to 911. Internally, the cars’ part numbers carried on the prefix 901 for years.[5] Production began in September 1964,[6] the first 911s reached the US in February 1965 with a price tag of US$6,500.[5]

The earliest edition of the 911 had a 130 PS (96 kW; 128 hp)[1] flat-6 engine, in the “boxer” configuration like the 356, air-cooled and rear-mounted, displaced 1991 cc compared with the 356’s four-cylinder, 1600 cc unit. The car had four seats although the rear seats were very small, thus the car is usually called a 2+2 rather than a four-seater (the 356 was also a 2+2).

It was mated to a four or five-speed manual “Type 901” transmission. The styling was largely by Ferdinand “Butzi” Porsche, son of Ferdinand “Ferry” Porsche. Erwin Komenda, the leader of the Porsche car body construction department, was also involved in the design.

The 356 came to the end of its production life in 1965, but there was still a market for a 4-cylinder car, particularly in the USA. The Porsche 912, introduced the same year, served as a direct replacement, offering the 356’s 4-cylinder, 1600 cc, 90 hp (67 kW) engine inside the 911 bodywork.

In 1966 Porsche introduced the more powerful 911S, the engine’s power raised to 160 PS (118 kW; 158 hp).

Alloy wheels from Fuchs, in a distinctive 5-leaf design, were offered for the first time. In motorsport at the same time, installed in the mid-engined Porsche 904 and Porsche 906, the engine was developed to 210 PS (154 kW).

In 1967 the Targa (meaning “shield” in Italian[7]) version was introduced as a “stop gap” model. The Targa had a stainless steel-clad roll bar, as Porsche had, at one point, thought that the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) would outlaw fully open convertibles in the US, an important market for the 911. The name “Targa” came from the Targa Florio sports car road race in Sicily, Italy in which Porsche had notable success, with seven victories since 1956, and four more to come until 1973. This last win in the subsequently discontinued event is especially notable as it was scored with a 911 Carrera RS against prototypes entered by Italian factories of Ferrari and Alfa Romeo. The road going Targa was equipped with a removable roof panel and a removable plastic rear window (although a fixed glass version was offered alongside from 1968).

The 110 PS (81 kW; 108 hp) 911T was also launched in 1967 and effectively replaced the 912. The staple 130 PS (96 kW; 128 hp) model was renamed the 911L. The 911R had a very limited production (20 in all), as this was a lightweight racing version with thin aluminium doors, a magnesium crankcase, twin-spark cylinder heads, and a power output of 210 PS (154 kW).

In 1969 the B series was introduced: the wheelbase for all 911 and 912 models was increased from 2211 to 2268 mm (87 to 89¼ in), an effective remedy to the cars nervous handling at the limit. The overall length of the car did not change: rather, the rear wheels were relocated aft. fuel injection arrived for the 911S and for a new middle model, 911E. A semi-automatic Sportomatic[8] model, composed of a torque converter, an automatic clutch, and the four-speed transmission was added to the product lineup. It was canceled after the 1980 model year[9] partly because of the elimination of a forward gear to make it a three-speed.[9]

The 2.2 L 911E was called “The secret weapon from Zuffenhausen”[citation needed]. Despite the lower power output of the 911E (155 PS (114 kW; 153 hp)) compared to the 911S (180 PS (132 kW; 178 hp)) the 911E was quicker in acceleration up to 160 km/h (100 mph).

The 1972–1973 model years consisted of the same models, but with a new, larger 2341 cc (142 in³) engine. This is universally known as the “2.4 L” engine, despite its displacement being closer to 2.3 litres. The 911E and 911S used mechanical fuel injection (MFI) in all markets. For 1972 the 911T was carbureted, except in the U.S. and some Asian markets where emission regulations forced Porsche to equip the 911T with mechanical fuel injection. In January, 1973, US 911Ts were switched to the new K-Jetronic CIS (Continuous Fuel Injection) system from Bosch.

With the power and torque increases, the 2.4 L cars also got a newer, stronger transmission, identified by its Porsche type number 915. Derived from the transmission in the Porsche 908 race car, the 915 did away with the 901/911 transmission’s “dog-leg” style first gear arrangement, opting for a traditional H pattern with first gear up to the left, second gear underneath first, etc.

911S models also gained a discreet spoiler under the front bumper to improve high-speed stability. With the cars weighing only 1050 kg (2315 lb), these are often regarded as the best classic mainstream 911s. For racing at this time, the 911 ST was produced in limited numbers (the production run for the ST only lasted from 1970 to 1971).

The cars were available with engines of either 2466 cc or 2492 cc, producing 270 PS (199 kW; 266 hp) at 8000 rpm. Weight was down to 960 kg (2166 lb).

Introduction

The advertisement under study is a Porsche commercial, aired in May 2006 on TV. The commercial starts with portraying a child in a classroom who loses his attention to the teacher as he sights Porsche 911 car passing by outside the window. He is entirely absorbed by the sight of a smart sports car. He is soon distracted by the teacher, but the car does not vanish from his mind and then and there he draws a picture of the car he has fallen in love with on first sight. The boy runs to the Porsche showroom nearby after the school. There he has a sit-in experience and asks for the business card of showroom manager telling him that he would be back in 20 years.

The ad’s target audience is, unlike a usual sport and luxury cars’ commercials that are for a specific class and niche, very general and universal. Although one might argue that such an ad is only for car lovers, but even not-a-great sports car lover feels a touching inspiration from this ad. The commercial was first aired in Britain and Ireland, where people have a taste for small and smart sized cars. But the emotional appeal in the ad makes it universal as it depicts a child who dreams for it. A 10 year old is not mature enough to be enriched with a culture and mindset where people like small or large cars.

Secondly, this commercial definitely appeals to people who are not very rich currently, who cannot afford a famous sports car, but can dream about it. The commercial does not draw a line between its viewers. It attracts every car lover whether rich or poor. This is vital to note that a foremost audience of this ad is the same man or woman who passes by a Porsche showroom every evening, and dreams to own one. It touches the heart of a person who can only dream about sports cars and his place is filled with such posters on the walls. The ad tells them that there is a considerable time between the moment you want and the moment you own a Porsche.

This is vital to note that the ad does not specifically, unlike usual car ads, portray too much the car, its shiny surface, speedometer and its interior etc. Rather it focuses more on message that is delivered very calmly. The ad lacks the usual rush and speedy sounds of sports cars, their skidding scenes and a rich driving dude. The purpose of the car is definitely to appeal to the charm of Porsche, but behind the scenes a message is intentionally conveyed.

It forces to audience to think that “I can have what I dream”. There are many who dream about something to achieve in life, but for the reason that they cannot have that, they start losing the dream until one day they feel indifferent about it. The ad hits the very audience that is under such trance. The ad tells them that to dream is not unrealistic, and even 20 years is time worth waiting for it to come true.

The commercial relies heavily on emotions. It appeals to emotions, inspires through emotions and influences the thoughts of audience through emotions. Depicting a child conveys a slight sense of innocence, undisturbed passion and simplicity. As the child enters big Porsche showroom one expects that he would be treated with non serious skeptical attitude by the manager. But there it also portrays a very humane and considerate person who asks him to sit inside the car, and then gives him his business card. Behind the scenes there are several messages. The very modest showroom manager on one side where the ad tries to capture the favor for the product alone and a passionate child on the other where ad tries to portray a very appealing beauty of the car.

Although the ad uses emotional appeal heavily, one cannot miss out the logical appeal it has. Children are attracted by beautiful and expensive things they have no idea they can have or not. They dream big and are not shy to hide them. They express their dreams and are very extrovert in that respect. They chase their dreams and want to get they dream. They are not mature enough to think what their effort would result in or how people would perceive their passion. They are not ready to accept that something is unreachable. In parallel, the ad ends on a note that very often there is a considerable time between the moment of dreaming and owning a Porsche. The message is very realistic.

The commercial leaves a longer than usual effect. It forces the viewer to think. There are many commercials, most of them appeal to humorous side of things and they just try to leave an impression about the product. This commercial certainly sticks to a serious tone and engages the viewer like a movie does. But the obvious and underlying message may not be viewed very acceptingly by all the audience.

There may be some skeptical ones will not like this ad due to several reasons. There is always a group of people that is against the idea of casting children in advertisement commercials. According to them children are not mature to make a right decision about products, and portraying them as liking or disliking some product is exploiting their innocence. Secondly, the 20 year time gap may be perceived by some audience as too long for a serious consideration of buying a car.

The ad may only seem to them as mere advertisement in which Porsche is portrayed, then a very trendy and humane employee of the company as showroom manager, and in the end a few statements that are a little exaggerated. But in any way, the ad does help the cause, the purpose behind it; it forces to think, whether positively or critically. And for those against child-casting, the ad depicts very natural thing about children, their love for cars, and their passion to run after dreams.
