Priscilla Araba Hagan

Awesome. This has become my go-to site for testing my students’ reading comprehension. Keep it up!

I love your website my kids benefit so much from everything you do! THANK YOU!!

Priscilla Hagan

This has been a great find. I love the stories and so do my students. I have particularly found the nondiction passages wonderful – the ones which appear in their reading books are often bland and not engaging – and so do my students. They’re learning so much and it’s stirring their curiosity to do their digging about the topics they most enjoy.

Since comprehension questions in our part of the world are not mcqs – they are usuallyquestions which require short answers – I usually dowload the passages and prepare my own questions, with maybe one or two mcqs from your question bank thrown in. Thus, my students cannot find answers and it makes them do the hard work of comprehending the passages.

I also underline some of the words and phrases and ask them to find words or phrases which mean the same and can replace them in the passage – that’s another important component of questions asked on reading comprehension passages in my part of the world, Ghana. Maybe those complaining about cheaters can use some of these strategies. They can also tweak the questions on this site to do away with cheating.

Mr. Morton, you’re amazing. Love, love this site. My students and I are the better for it.

Ayana Sanchez

Hello from Panama, this website has proven so helpful to help my students study for the TOEFL

Keshia Cabriole

Good Morning may we use the Redwoods and Arm Races Story for our study? I would like to say that the story and questionnaire will be a big help if you allow us to use your story to our study.

Of course. Best wishes!

Sahar Zaher

Greetings from Egypt….I’ve been using this site for the past 3 years, and it never failed to impress me and my students. It’s very resourceful and I use it on daily basis. Wherever the owner of this site is, thank you from the bottom of my heart.

You are so welcome! Thank you for using my site.

Honestly, I am writing this short message from the far lower corner of Africa, all the way from Namibia. Coming across this website has just proven to me that truly good people still exist in this world,as opposed to my traditional name which means “Good people are extinct.” I am so grateful to the person who shared all this helpful and precious information. May God continue to fill your heart and life with gifts overflowing upto an eternal fold. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you!

That’s the nicest thing anyone has ever said to me. I appreciate the kind words and hearing your story. I wish you the greatest possible success in all your endeavors.

Thank you so much for this. I am a 5/6 grader and I think my teachers will enjoy this too. I use this also over the summer so I can keep track of my smartness 🙂

This website is supported by advertisements. No need for donations! But I am very happy that you like the site and took the time to comment. Best wishes!

Do you mean poems with questions like these ?

Jornalyn N. Agapito

Thank you so much for this reading material. It was great help to my students to develop love in reading.

You’re such an amazing person! Thank you for sharing these materials. They helped me a lot as an ELA middle school teacher. May God bless you!

Excellent passages

I am looking for material for a 10-12 reading comprehension class. Your materials are great, but a lower interest level from HS students. Any suggestions for upper levels?

Thanks so much for sharing these wonderful worksheets!

JHANNET VELÁSQUEZ

EXCELLENT WEBSITE!

Excellent and the really valuable resource.

Delores J. Mayes

My students has searched and found the answer keys to these readings. I wish there was a way the teacher’s could sign in for the content and keep the cheaters from having the honest kids miss out on these readings. What has our world gone to. This is so sad that my students would copy answers word for word and expect to get a 100% as well as their parents. We are growing a nation of untruth and cheaters.

Yeah, that is pretty frustrating.

It’s tough to keep the content free and open while preventing students from finding the answers.

One thing that might help is downloading the .RTF file and editing the titles of the assignments. A persistent student will still be able to find the answers, but that may make it a little harder.

Also, remember, cheaters are only cheating themselves! And the system and everyone else too, but mainly themselves! Best wishes!

Hi Ma’am Dolores. That happened to me years ago during the MDL (modular distance learning) in our country, Philippines. You know what I did, I shorten my URLs and add number 1 at the end of it. This way, they can no longer trace my resources.

Alexandra Bardon

Thank you Mr. Morton for sharing! Your material is just what we need to keep students busy during lockdown. I really appreciate it. K. Bardon

VLOOKUP Practice Example File [With Solutions]

What is vlookup.

Vlookup stands for Vertical Lookup and is part of a group of functions that I like to call "Lookup Functions".  A Lookup Function's sole purpose is to pull in information from a table of data based on a unique identifier (I will refer to these as “IDs”).

Vlookup Formula Inputs

It’s like telling your dog to find your yellow ball ( Lookup Value ID ) and that it's somewhere in the backyard ( Table Array ).  Okay, give your dog a little more help because you have a REALLY BIG backyard!

You then specify it’s on the left side of the backyard ( Column Reference ) and that he has to bring back the exact ball you asked for ( Range Lookup ).

Kind of make sense? For a simple spreadsheet-based example let’s look at the data below:

In  Table 1  we have a data table with an Employee ID, Last Name, & First name field.  Let’s say that we received  Table 2  from the Payroll department and we need to fill in the last name associated with the Employees ID.

With the small amount of data in this example, you probably could get away with manually looking up each person’s ID number and copying/pasting their last name into  Table 2 , however, there would be two things that would prevent you from wanting to do this:

  • The solution is manual and therefore time-consuming
  • You are keying in data by hand which should always be avoided if possible

Plus, what if you had to fill in the last names of a thousand employees?  This would turn into an all-day exercise!  Luckily we can use an Excel Lookup function to do this search for us.  Watch the below animation to see how quickly I can use the VLOOKUP function to pull in the data I want.

VLOOKUP Function Inputs

There are 3 required and 1 optional input in the VLOOKUP function. The below table describes all four inputs.

RequiredThis is your ID. The text or number that is unique to the line item you are searching for and is not repeated anywhere else in your data set. This value must be located in the   column of your  .
RequiredThe range of your table that you want to retrieve data from. The one requirement to this range is that your ID column must be the first column in the range.
RequiredA number input that references the column you want your formula to search in.
OptionalThis input is technically optional but Microsoft chose to make the default the option that no one uses, so I'm saying it's required because 99% of the time you are NOT going to use the default (I don't think I ever have). Anyways....this option tells the Vlookup function whether you want it to find an exact match or make a guess (the default) when trying to match up your ID value ( ). If you have your unique ID setup correctly you will have no need to have the Vlookup make a typically inaccurate guess. So just make it easy on yourself and ALWAYS MAKE THIS   or you can also use the number   (0 stands for false in binary code) instead.

Possible Errors That Can Occur

There are 3 different errors that can occur if your VLOOKUP function cannot find a match or is set up improperly.

  • #REF! - If your function's Col_Index_Num is larger than the number of columns in your Table_Array , your VLOOKUP function will return a #REF! error.
  • #VALUE! - If your function's  Col_Index_Num  is less than 1, your VLOOKUP function will return a #VALUE! error.
  • #N/A - If you input FALSE (or 0) for your Range_Lookup parameter and no exact match can be found, your VLOOKUP function will return a #N/A error. You can hand this by wrapping an IFERROR function around your VLOOKUP function.

VLOOKUP Function Practice Examples

Here is an Excel file you can download to see ways you can apply the VLOOKUP Function in your spreadsheets!

There are both working tabs and solution tabs provided within the Excel file so you can reference the answers if you can’t solve the task on the first try.

Example 1: Add First/Last Name From Another Table

In this practice example, you are asked to add the first and last name of the employee to a Pay Report . You will need to use the Employee ID to Vlookup the name columns from another table so you don’t have to manually type out all the names.

Vlookup Function Practice Example 1

Example 2: Vlookup From Multiple Tables

In this practice example, you will need to reference two separate data table sources in order to complete the requested Pay Report .

Vlookup Function Practice Example 2

Example 3: Vlookup Using Approximate Matching

In this practice example, you will need to utilized VLOOKUP’s approximate match capability to categorize each employee to their proper payroll pay band based on the amount they are being paid.

Vlookup Function Practice Example 3

Why You Should Learn VLOOKUP

I currently sit right across from the Human Resources department and I always find myself listening in on the questions that our hiring managers ask prospective hires over the phone.  Over time I recognized that certain questions were always asked to size up abilities pertaining to their analytic abilities.  I found it really fascinating that computer skills (especially Excel) could be analyzed by one very simple question: Do you have experience using VLOOKUP?

VLOOKUP seems to be that one function that basic users (including myself at one point) have never heard of and that even recognizing the function’s name puts you into a category of an “experienced Excel user”.  While I can agree that VLOOKUP is an essential function to know, I probably would not categorize all people who know how to use it as experienced users, but it is definitely a stepping-stone towards becoming one.

Understanding how to use VLOOKUP was the pinnacle moment in my Excel experience where I realized that there was way more to spreadsheets than adding and multiplying numbers.  Hopefully, the information on this page has helped you get a grasp of what Vlookup is and how it can be used.

Other Lookup Functions To Learn

Microsoft Excel has additional Lookup functions that you can use within your spreadsheets. Each function has its own pros and cons.

  • XLOOKUP (New!)
  • INDEX/MATCH

XLOOKUP was released in 2020 and was created to be an all-in-one solution for lookup needs. This is the function I would recommend you learn next as it has the most diversity in its use cases.

You can learn more about this function in my dedicated XLOOKUP guide which will teach you everything you need to know.

Students can read this on their own in class, as a homework assignment or it can be a group activity in a classroom. It is also ideally suited for home-schoolers or independent learners who want to learn more. A Worksheet with questions based on the reading is included, along with an Answer Key. Reading Assignment - 2 pages Worksheet - 1 page The worksheet is also available as a digital resource through Easel so students may complete it online.

Primary Source Analysis and DBQs

This 20 page DBQ and Primary Source Analysis activity gives students a chance to delve deeper into women’s experiences and contributions during the Civil War. In addition, there are two Document-Based Questions (DBQs) available for students to complete.

Included is a one-page sheet that explains what primary sources are and how to analyze them using specific questions through a process called HAPPY. Primary sources include speeches, essays, a declaration and cartoons. Each page of primary sources includes questions. There is also a page at the end for students to apply the HAPPY process to one source. An Answer Key to all the questions and the HAPPY process is available at the end of the packet. This is excellent practice for all high school students, particularly Honors and APUSH students, but all students will find these resources engaging.

Students can read this on their own as a homework assignment or it can be a group activity in a classroom. It is also ideally suited for home-schoolers, college students or independent learners who want to learn more. Teachers can assign just a few sources to analyze or the entire packet. Student time will vary. There is also an Easel Activity which allows students to answer the questions at the end of each primary source online. For homework purposes, Home Schoolers or for asynchronous learning, this is an especially valuable digital option. This is part of the Women in American History Series which includes PowerPoint lessons as well as Reading Assignments and Worksheets, Primary Source Analysis and DBQs and Activities for other eras. Teaching units listed below with links but resources available individually as well.

Do you like World War II historical fiction? Consider  Hearts of War  about a Nisei soldier who served in the Military Intelligence Service and a woman who served in the Women Army Corps. In writing this book, I wanted to bring an unknown aspect of history to light. Available on Amazon or Kindle and I appreciate any reviews!

Basic Process to Configure Worksheet Assignment Segments

Here's the basic process to include assignment segments in a compensation, detail table only, performance, or promotion task worksheet. All tasks are in the Compensation work area.

  • Load your assignment segments using the External Data task.
  • Make sure that all of the compensation cycles are closed for the workforce compensation plan. This way you have all configuration options available because certain options aren't available to open cycles.
  • Identify the compensation component you want to use for assignment segment. Also identify the amount column to use for the assignment segments. It can be the Compensation Amount column or one of the six miscellaneous rate columns for the component. This column is how you can feed segment totals to worksheet summary views. You can also use the totals as default values for the selected column in the detail table of the worksheet.
  • Configure only one of the five available compensation components for assignment segments. Use the Configure Compensation Component task. You need to configure a component that isn't mapped to salary rates and doesn't have salary rates mapped to it.
  • Enable the Assignment Segments column in the Additional Information group of the detail worksheet table using the Configure Worksheet Display task.

Enable and configure the assignment segments using the Configure Assignment Segments task. To reduce horizontal scrolling, enable try to enable no more than 10 columns. To give managers a more robust view of the assignment segment table, select Show detach icon .

Just like for all worksheet columns, you can set meaningful display names and change the default sequence. You can also set properties for assignment segment columns. The specific properties you can set depend on the column.

General, such as column shading, rounding rule, and decimal precision

  • For one numeric segment column, you need to set Selected for Totaling to Yes .
  • For each segment column you want to include in worksheet audit trails, you need to select Include in audit trail .
  • Visibility and access, such as line managers can only read the column data but compensation administrators can read and edit it

Default value, such as a specific number or text, or values provided by a specified formula, compensation derived factor, or from a cross-referenced column

  • For each segment column the Refresh Workforce Compensation Data process should update after people make changes, you need to select Default value subject to refresh .
  • Information, such as the calculation or dynamic column condition used to determine the segment column amounts or the source of the segment column data

For many segment columns, you can also build dynamic conditions, for example, to determine the proration factor.

To let managers view changes to assignment segments in worksheet audit trails, for only one segment column, select Audit Differentiator .

If you change Enable Assignment Segments to No , you delete all segment configurations. Changing it back to Yes won't restore the configurations. If you leave the page before saving the change to No , you can restore any configurations saved before you set Enable Assignment Segments to No .
