Developers have the choice to integrate this technology in their experiences.

Chat with voice is currently available to all 13+ phone number verified users in these countries: US, CA, UK, AU, NZ, ES, MX, CL, CR, PR, FR, DE. Users not in these countries should use ID verification to enable chat with voice.

All 13+ users, who are phone number verified , can opt-in to use this feature by visiting their Settings page. They will then be able to use chat with voice in any Roblox experience that supports it.

How do I enable Chat with Voice?

To enable the chat with voice, follow the instructions below:

• Go to Account Settings
• Select the Privacy Tab
• The toggle will turn from gray to green, indicating that chat with voice has been enabled for your account.

13+ users are encouraged to enjoy this exciting way to communicate on Roblox, but must also continue to adhere to the Terms of Use and Community Standards as they would within any Roblox experience. You can mute another user in a chat with voice experience by clicking the speaker icon that will appear over their avatar’s head or next to their name in the Roblox menu. Muting only applies to chat with voice and not text chat. It will only last while you are in the experience session.

To unmute a user, access the Roblox menu and click the speaker icon next to their username.

Deploying ML for Voice Safety

Our mission is to connect a billion people with optimism and civility, which will require us to help people feel truly together with one another. For 3D immersive worlds, much like in the physical world, few things are more authentic or powerful than the human voice in forging lasting friendships and connections. But how do we scale the immersiveness and richness of voice communication on Roblox while keeping our community safe and civil?

In this blog, we’ll share how we brought to life Real-time Safety, an end-to-end machine learning (ML) model—operating at a scale of millions of minutes of voice activity per day—that detects policy violations in voice communication more accurately than human moderation. The outputs from this system are fed into another model, which determines the appropriate consequences. The consequence model triggers notifications for people who have violated our policies, initially with warnings and then with more drastic actions if the behavior persists.

This end-to-end Real-time Safety system was an audacious goal as, to our knowledge, no one else in the industry was delivering multilingual, near real-time voice safety features to their users. Voice classification depends on both audio style, including volume and tone, and content, including the words spoken. We are excited to share how we developed this system from essentially no prior automation—effectively zero labeled data and no models—going from zero to 60 for real-time voice safety.

And finally, we are excited to share our first open-source model , which is one of our voice safety models. In open sourcing this model and making it available for commercial use, we hope to provide an industry baseline for policy violation detection that can accelerate the development of newer ML models for voice safety. This open-source model is our first version, and we’ve since made significant improvements that we are currently testing.

Overcoming Data Scarcity

We began our ML efforts as many companies do—by assessing the quality of available data for training and evaluating our models. The ideal dataset pairing would include voice utterance along with a high-quality labeled safety categorization for that utterance. However, when we started, we had almost no large-scale human-labeled real-world data. To train a high-quality voice safety detection model using a supervised approach, we needed thousands of audio hours of labeled data for each language we supported, which would have taken years to gather and would’ve been prohibitively resource and time intensive.

Instead of relying on thousands of hours of hand-labeled data, we developed several more efficient methods:

Machine-labeled data for training. Instead of getting stuck on the pursuit of perfect hand-labeled data for training, we opted for a large volume of training data from machine labeling of voice utterances. Using large amounts of machine-labeled data with weak supervision generated training models that were robust to some noise in the labels. The keys to making this approach work were access to great open-source speech-to-text libraries and years of experience using ML to detect Community Standards violations in people’s textual communications. This machine labeling approach allowed us to label the volume of training data we needed for our models in weeks instead of years.

Human-labeled data for evaluation. Although high-quality yet imperfect machine-labeled data was good enough to train a highly performant model, we didn’t trust machine labels to perform the final validation of the resulting model. The next question, then, was where we could get enough human-labeled data for evaluation. Luckily, while it was impossible to gather enough human-labeled data for training in a timely way, it was possible to gather enough for evaluation of our model using our in-house moderators, who were already classifying abuse reports from people on Roblox to manually issue consequences. This allowed us to enjoy the best of both worlds: machine-labeled training data that was good and plentiful enough to produce a highly performant model, and human-labeled evaluation data that was much smaller in volume but more than enough to give us confidence that the model truly worked.

Another area where we faced data scarcity was in policy violation categories where we have very low prevalence, such as references to drugs and alcohol or self-harm. To address this issue, we combined several low-prevalence categories into an “other” category. As a result, our eventual model could identify the categories of profanity, bullying, discrimination, dating, and “other.” In order to understand these “other” categories, so we can better protect our community and ensure safe and civil discourse on Roblox, we will continue monitoring these for more examples. Over time, the subcategories in “other” will also become named categories as the number of training examples in those subcategories reaches a critical mass.

Machine Labeling Pipeline for Training Data

We designed a fully automatic machine labeling pipeline for extracting high-quality labels from voice chat sequences. Our pipeline consists of three stages:

Audio chunk splitting. The first stage of the pipeline involves splitting the audio into chunks, or shorter segments, wherever we detect periods of silence between sentences. It allows us to identify and label policy-violating content more efficiently.

Audio transcription. The second stage of the pipeline consists of transcribing these audio chunks into text using an automatic speech recognition (ASR) model. We use publicly available open source ASR models.

Text classification. The final stage of the pipeline involves classifying the transcribed text using our in-house text filter. This filter is designed to detect and block inappropriate content in text-based communications. We adapted the filter to work with the transcribed audio data, allowing us to label the audio chunks with policy-violation classes and keywords. The text filter is an ensemble model trained on human-labeled policy-violating text data comprising an extended DistilBERT model and regular expression rules.

It’s important to note that this pipeline was used only for generating training data for our ultimate production model. You might wonder, however, why train a model at all if there’s already a pipeline here that generates the labels we are looking for? The answer is efficiency—we need to be incredibly accurate, in far less time. At Roblox scale, invoking the ASR to transcribe all voice communications would be prohibitively slow and resource intensive. However, a compact ML model trained from this data, specifically designed to detect policy violations in voice communications without doing a full transcription, is equally accurate, yet significantly faster and can be used at Roblox scale.

Scaling the Machine Labeling Pipeline

With most large AI initiatives, the mechanism to obtain quality training data is itself a production ML system , which needs to be created from scratch. For this project, we needed to develop our machine labeling pipeline as a first-class production system with 24/7 uptime and the ability to scale to thousands of concurrent CPU or equivalent numbers of GPU. We implemented a training data cluster with thousands of CPU cores that automatically process the incoming audio streams in parallel to generate machine labels. This system had to run flawlessly for maximal throughput, and any mistakes or downtime could result in days or weeks of lost time in training data generation.

Below is a high-level overview of the architecture that supported the scale we needed to machine label tens of thousands of audio hours in a matter of just weeks. The key takeaway here was that investing in queues at key points in our processing allowed us to remove bottlenecks by horizontally scaling worker threads across many machines. These worker threads performed the audio chunk splitting, audio transcription, and text classification steps mentioned in the previous section.

ML Architecture

A central requirement for our model search was low latency, i.e., near real-time speeds for model inference, which led us to architectures that directly operate on raw audio and return a score. We use Transformer-based architectures, which work very well for sequence summarization and are very successful in the industry for natural language processing (NLP) and audio modeling. Our challenge was to find a sweet spot that balances complexity with low-latency inference—i.e., handling multiple languages plus accents, robustness to background noise, and audio quality, while satisfying our product latency constraints.

Model Selection

An immediate design question was to determine the size of the context window needed to train the Transformer models. We looked at the histogram of length of utterances in voice chat data across several days of usage and determined that a 15-second window provided the trade-off between latency and sufficient context needed for classification. We use “no-violation” as a category to detect the absence of policy violations. Given that a single audio clip can embody multiple types of violations, the task inherently becomes multilabel rather than a conventional multiclass classification problem. We fine-tuned the entire network, including head layers for this task, with binary cross-entropy (BCE) loss.

We evaluated several popular open source encoder models from the audio research community and narrowed down our choices to WavLM and Whisper . Our first experiment was to fine-tune the pretrained WavLM base+ with 2,300 hours of Roblox machine-labeled voice data and evaluate the classification results on two real-world eval datasets. We obtained very encouraging classification results (see Model Evaluation, below), but found that the latency was larger than our thresholds for production deployment. As a follow-up, we implemented a custom version of the WavLM architecture with fewer Transformer layers and trained an end-to-end model from scratch on 7,000 hours of Roblox machine-labeled voice data. This model produces robust classifications in conversational settings and was more compact compared with the fine-tuned model. Our final model candidate used a student-teacher distillation setup, with a Whisper encoder as the teacher network and the WavLM end-to-end architecture as the student network. When we trained it on 4,000 hours of audio, we saw classification accuracies similar to the fine-tuned model but with a substantial improvement in latency and reduced model size. The image below summarizes the model parameters for the three experiments described above. We continue to iterate the data sampling strategies, evaluation strategies, and model hyperparameters as we extend the models for multilingual voice safety classification.

Model Optimization

We employed standard industry methods, including quantizing selected Transformer layers to achieve a more than 25 percent speedup without compromising quality. Switching the feature extraction stage to MFCC inputs combined with convolutional neural networks (CNNs) instead of only CNNs also resulted in greater than 40 percent speedups during inference. Additionally, introducing a voice activity detection (VAD) model as a preprocessing step significantly increased the robustness of the overall pipeline, especially for users with noisy microphones. VAD allowed us to filter out noise and apply our safety pipeline only when we detect human speech in the audio, which reduced the overall volume of inference by approximately 10 percent and provided higher-quality inputs to our system.

Model Evaluation

Although we used many different datasets and metrics for evaluation, we can share how our voice classifier performed on an English-language dataset with high policy violation prevalence (such as what we would find in voice abuse reports from users). This dataset was 100 percent human labeled by our moderators. When we combined all violation types (profanity, bullying, dating, etc.) into a single binary category, we observed a PR-AUC (area under precision-recall curve) score of over 0.95, as shown below. This means that on this evaluation dataset, the classifier can typically catch a great majority of violations without falsely flagging too many non-violations.

The strong evaluation results above, however, do not necessarily translate directly across all use cases. For example, in the case of our notifications about policy-violating speech, the classifier is evaluating all Roblox voice chats and finding a lower prevalence of violations, and there is a greater chance of false-positive results. In the case of voice abuse reports, the classifier is evaluating only speech that has been flagged for potential violations, so the prevalence is higher. Still, the results above were encouraging enough for us to initiate experiments with the classifier in production (at conservative thresholds) to notify users about their policy-violating language. The results of these experiments greatly exceeded our expectations.

What’s Next?

By leveraging our own CPU infrastructure and carefully designing the pipeline for large scale, we were able to successfully deploy this model at Roblox scale. During peak hours, the model is successfully serving over 2,000 requests per second (the majority of which contain no violations). We have also observed a significant reduction in policy-violating behavior on the platform due to the use of the model for notifying people about policy-violating language. In particular, from our initial rollout, we are seeing a 15.3 percent reduction in severe-level voice abuse reports and an 11.4 percent decrease in violations per minute of speech.

We are extending our models with multilingual training data, which allows us to deploy a single classification model across the platform to handle several languages as well as language mixing. We are also exploring new multitask architectures for identifying select keywords in addition to the classification objective without resorting to full ASR. The detection of these keywords in addition to violation labels improves the quality of the classification and provides an opportunity to give people context while issuing consequences.

The research described here was a joint effort across many teams at Roblox. This was a great display of our core value of respecting the community and a great collaboration across multiple disciplines.

Chancellor Rachel Reeves is taking immediate action to fix the foundations of our economy

In her first speech as Chancellor, Rachel Reeves laid out plans to rebuild Britain and make every part of the country better off.

Good morning.

Last week, the British people voted for change.

And over the last 72 hours I have begun the work necessary to deliver on that mandate.

Our manifesto was clear:

Sustained economic growth is the only route to the improved prosperity that country needs and the living standards of working people.

Where previous governments have been unwilling to take the difficult decisions to deliver growth…

… or have waited too long to act…

… I will not hesitate.

Growth [political content removed]. It is now our national mission.

There is no time to waste.

This morning I want to outline the first steps [political content removed] taken to fix the foundations of our economy.

So we can rebuild Britain and make every part of our country better off.

But first, let me address the inheritance.

I have repeatedly warned that whoever won the general election would inherit the worst set of circumstances since the Second World War.

What I have seen in the past 72 hours has only confirmed that.

Our economy has been held back by decisions deferred and decisions ducked.

Political self-interest put ahead of the national interest.

A government that put party first, country second.

We face the legacy of fourteen years of chaos and economic irresponsibility.  

That is why over the weekend I instructed Treasury officials to provide an assessment of the state of our spending inheritance so that I can understand the scale of the challenge. And I will present this to Parliament before the summer recess. 

This will be separate from a Budget that will be held later this year – and I will confirm the date of that Budget, alongside a forecast from the Office for Budget Responsibility, in due course.

All governments face difficult choices – and I will not shrink from those choices.

Those choices are made harder, however, by the absence of the economic growth necessary to not only balance the books but also to improve living standards.

New Treasury analysis that I requested over the weekend shows that, had the UK economy grown at the average rate of other OECD economies this last 13 years, our economy would have been over £140 billion larger.

This could have brought in an additional £58 billion in tax revenues in the last year alone. That’s money that could have revitalised our schools, our hospitals, and other public services.

Growth requires difficult choices – choices that previous governments have shied away from.

And it now falls to [political content removed] fix the foundations.

We have promised a new approach to growth – one fit for a changed world.

That approach will rest on three pillars – stability, investment, and reform.

Let me turn first to stability.

In the run-up to the general election, I set out the crucial first steps in our economic plans:

To deliver economic stability, so we can grow our economy and keep taxes, inflation and mortgages as low as possible.

And that commitment stands.

I emphasised this commitment in a meeting with the Governor of the Bank of England on Friday, and I will do the same when I meet the chair of the Office for Budget Responsibility this week.

These institutions are guarantors of our economic stability and I will not be playing games at their expense.

Over the weekend I made clear to Treasury officials that the manifesto commitments that we were elected on will be kept to and they will be delivered on.

That includes robust fiscal rules.

And it includes our commitments to no increases in National Insurance, and the basic, higher, or additional rates of Income Tax, or VAT.

Now I know there are some who will argue that the time for caution is past.

That a large majority in Parliament means we have the licence to row back on the principles of sound money and economic responsibility.

I know that many of you aren’t used to hearing this after recent years. But I believe that the promises that a party is elected on should be delivered on in government and we will do so.

We do not take lightly the trust of voters who have been burned too often by incompetence, irresponsibility, and recklessness.

And to investors and businesses who have spent fourteen years doubting whether Britain is a safe place to invest, then let me tell you:

After fourteen years, Britain has a stable government. A government that respects business, wants to partner with business, and is open for business.

In an uncertain world, Britain is a place to do business.

Let me turn to how we will unlock private investment that we so desperately need.

And in March, the former governor of the Bank of England, Mark Carney, agreed to lead a Taskforce on the establishment of a new National Wealth Fund.

I can tell you today that I have received the report from that Taskforce, and I will be announcing the next steps in short order.

Alongside investment must come reform.

Because the question is not whether we want growth, but how strong is our resolve – how prepared are we to make hard choices and face down the vested interests;

How willing, even, to risk short-term political pain to fix Britain’s foundations.

The story of the last fourteen years has been a refusal to confront the tough and responsible decisions that are demanded.

This government will be different.

And there is no time to waste.

Nowhere is decisive reform needed more urgently than in the case of our planning system.

Planning reform has become a byword for political timidity in the face of vested interests and a graveyard of economic ambition.

Our antiquated planning system leaves too many important projects getting tied up in years and years of red tape before shovels ever get into the ground.

We promised to put planning reform at the centre of our political argument – and we did.

We said we would grasp the nettle of planning reform – and we are doing so.

Today I can tell you that work is underway.

Over the weekend, I met with the Prime Minister and the Deputy Prime Minister to agree the urgent action needed to fix our planning system.

Today, alongside the Deputy Prime Minister, I am taking immediate action to deliver this [political content removed] government’s mission to kickstart economic growth;

And to take the urgent steps necessary to build the infrastructure that we need, including one and a half million homes over the next five years.

The system needs a new signal. This is that signal.

First, we will reform the National Planning Policy Framework, consulting on a new growth-focused approach to the planning system before the end of the month, including restoring mandatory housing targets.

And, as of today, we are ending the absurd ban on new onshore wind in England. We will also go further and consult on bringing onshore wind back into the Nationally Significant Infrastructure Projects regime, meaning decisions on large developments will be taken nationally not locally.

Second, we will give priority to energy projects in the system to ensure they make swift progress…

… and we will build on the spatial plan for Energy by expanding this to other infrastructure sectors.  

Third, we will create a new taskforce to accelerate stalled housing sites in our country…

…beginning with Liverpool Central Docks, Worcester Parkway, Northstowe and Langley Sutton Coldfield, representing more than 14,000 homes.

Fourth, we will also support local authorities with 300 additional planning officers across the country.

Fifth, if we are to put growth at the centre of our planning system, that means changes not only to the system itself, but to the way that ministers use our powers for direct intervention.

The Deputy Prime Minister has said that when she intervenes in the economic planning system, the benefit of development will be a central consideration and that she will not hesitate to review an application where the potential gain for the regional and national economies warrant it.

… and I welcome her decision to recover two planning appeals already, for data centres in Buckinghamshire and in Hertfordshire.

To facilitate this new approach, the Deputy Prime Minister will also write to local mayors and the Office for Investment to ensure that any investment opportunity with important planning considerations that comes across their desks is brought to her attention and also to mine.

The Deputy Prime Minister will also write to Local Planning Authorities alongside the National Planning Policy Framework consultation, making clear what will now be expected of them…

…including universal coverage of local plans, and reviews of greenbelt boundaries. These will prioritise Brownfield and grey belt land for development to meet housing targets where needed.

And our golden rules will make sure the development this frees up will allow us to deliver thousands of the affordable homes too, including more for social rent.

Sixth, as well as unlocking new housing, we will also reform the planning system to deliver the infrastructure that our country needs.

Together, [political content removed] we will ask the Secretaries of State for Transport and Energy Security and Net Zero to prioritise decisions on infrastructure projects that have been sitting unresolved for far too long.

And finally, we will set out new policy intentions for critical infrastructure in the coming months, ahead of updating relevant National Policy Statements within the year.

I know that there will be opposition to this.

I’m not naïve to that;

And we must acknowledge that trade offs always exist: any development may have environmental consequences, place pressure on services, and rouse voices of local opposition.

But we will not succumb to a status quo which responds to the existence of trade-offs by always saying no, and relegates the national interest below other priorities.

We will make those tough decisions, to realise that mandate. 

Be in no doubt – we are going to get Britain building again.

We are going to get Britain’s economy growing again.

We will end the prevarication and make the necessary choices to fix the foundations:

We will introduce a modern industrial strategy, to create good work and drive investment in all of our communities.

We will reform our skills system, for a changing world of work.

We will tackle economic inactivity and get people back to work.

We will take on the hard work of reforming our public services, to make them fit for the future.

We will work closely with our national, regional and local leaders to power growth in every part of Britain.

And we will turn our attention to the pensions system, to drive investment in homegrown businesses and deliver greater returns to pension savers.

I know the voters’ trust cannot be repaid through slogans or gimmicks – only through action, only through delivery.

The Treasury I lead is proceeding on that basis.

I was appointed to this post less than 72 hours ago.

Upon my arrival, I told Treasury staff that the work starts straight away.

That work has begun.

I have commissioned and received economic analysis from HMT officials on the lost growth of the past 14 years, which I have set out today.

I have instructed Treasury officials to prepare an assessment of the state of our spending inheritance, to be presented to Parliament before the summer recess.

I have started working with the Prime Minister, to make the necessary preparations for the establishment of a Growth Mission Board, and that board will meet before summer recess, focused squarely on reviving our country’s economic growth and prosperity

I have established a new Growth Delivery Unit here, at the heart of  the Treasury.

I have received the recommendations of the National Wealth Fund Taskforce, and will shortly be announcing next steps.

There is much more to do.

More tough decisions to be taken.

The work towards a decade of national renewal has begun.

And we are just getting started.

President Joe Biden opened the NATO summit Tuesday in a speech honoring its 75th anniversary and reiterating Ukraine can beat Russia in what was a highly anticipated speech as Biden works to prove he can serve another four years.

The president said in his opening remarks that NATO is “better resourced than it ever has been” and ... [+] said emphatically that “Ukraine can and will stop Putin.”

Biden spoke for about 15 minutes at the opening of the summit in Washington, D.C. and emphasized NATO’s unity behind Ukraine in its war with Russia, saying “Ukraine can and will stop (Russian President Vladimir) Putin, especially with our full collective support.”

The three-day summit is largely to emphasize the support for Ukraine, but has become an opportunity for Biden to show he can govern amid increasing concerns about his age and calls for him to step down in the presidential race.

The president also said NATO is “better resourced than it ever has been,” pointing out 23 countries will be spending 2% or more of their national gross domestic product on defense compared to the nine countries that were when he took office in 2020.

Biden took the opportunity of the speech to announce a new air defense equipment donation to Ukraine and to give Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg the Presidential medal of freedom to honor his leadership of NATO over the past decade.

All eyes were on Biden for Tuesday’s speech amid the increased calls for him to leave the presidential race against former President Donald Trump. Researchers at Microsoft have developed an artificially intelligent text-to-speech program at a human level of believability.

It is so realistic that creators are keeping the high-tech interface “purely a research project” and will not yet allow it to be used by the public.

VALL-E 2, as it is called, is the first AI vocal program of its kind in “achieving human parity,” Microsoft announced . In other words, it can’t be differentiated from a person’s speech.

Until now, more rudimentary developments can be detected as AI through small nuances in verbiage.

Most notably, VALL-E 2 is said to be crystal clear “even for sentences that are traditionally challenging due to their complexity or repetitive phrases,” according to a paper on the software .

It can also replicate a voice thoroughly after hearing as little as three seconds of audio.

The program also “surpasses previous systems in speech robustness, naturalness, and speaker similarity,” researchers noted.

Its creators have good intentions for use both medically — being used as an aid for those with aphasia or similar pathological disabilities — and socially.

Specifically, researchers boast that VALL-E 2 “could be used for educational learning, entertainment, journalistic, self-authored content, accessibility features, interactive voice response systems, translation, chatbot, and so on.”

However, they are not ignorant of the potential misuse of such a high-powered tool.

“It may carry potential risks in the misuse of the model, such as spoofing voice identification or impersonating a specific speaker.”

For this reason, there are “no plans to incorporate VALL-E 2 into a product or expand access to the public.”

Voice spoofing, creating a pretend voice for phone calls and other long-distance interactions, is becoming a concerning issue due to easy accessibility of AI programs. Apple just listed it as a top concern amid an increase in phishing .

The elderly are typically targeted, but some mothers have received fake calls that their children were kidnapped for ransom — mistakenly believing it was their child on the other end.

Experts, like Lisa Palmer , a strategist for consulting firm AI Leaders, recommend families and loved ones create tightly kept, verbal passwords to share on the phone in cases of doubt.

You can even set up different control schemes for those who have different accessibility needs. The possibilities are endless if this API were to be released!

Roblox is, as far as I’m aware, trying to be a ‘Metaverse’ of sorts - And it’s doing a great job. To me, this feature is the ultimate addition to a game striving to be as dynamic as Roblox.

It sounds hard to implement on the surface, BUT, there are MANY programs that convert speech to text that exist already, and it’s likely Roblox would not have a terrible time finding an integratable solution.

For certain games, since Voice Chat is a verified feature that requires an ID check, being able to automatically convert spoken words into even a rough approximation would be an incredible bridge between rare voice chat users and text chat users. The ability to translate that into text the developer can access would of course, also be incredibly helpful, allowing players to make Siri or OK Google alternatives that work within Roblox, as well as other things.

(For instance, I wanted to make a Debate game, which would have transcriptions saved - Since most players don’t have Voice Chat, this game wouldn’t really do well with voice chat on, unless I could transcribe it back into bubble chat easily.)

Roblox, quite literally, has the ability to implement this very easily in their hands. Let’s hope they consider it.

I believe this could happen with the Audio APIs on the roadmap; maybe a new Instance that you can wire to a AudioDeviceInput like AudioTranscriber?

Trump reframes stump speech to include Harris as Democrats consider Biden’s future

His hedging reflected how questions about Biden’s capacity to lead have upended and redefined the presidential race.

Donald Trump returned to the campaign trail with a new stump speech that made roughly equal work of skewering President Biden and Vice President Harris, recognizing the hand-wringing among Democrats over who should lead their ticket in November.

In a shift from earlier speeches, Trump criticized the current administration by calling it “Biden-Harris,” rather than using Biden’s name alone. He singled out Harris for her involvement in the administration’s response to the surge of migrants at the southern border and to Russian aggression in Ukraine. He consistently mispronounced Harris’s first name and used a nickname mocking the way she laughs.

Trump’s advisers have privately said they hope Biden will stay in the race because they view him as a weak opponent, though they have also expressed confidence about their chances against Harris. The hedging in Trump’s speech on Tuesday reflected how the fallout from Biden’s faltering debate performance and swirling questions about his ability to serve another four years have upended and redefined the campaign.

“Despite all of the Democrat panic this week, the truth is it doesn’t matter who they nominate because we are going to beat any one of them in thundering landslides,” Trump said. “Joe, Kamala and the entire Democrat establishment have been caught red-handed in the thick of the biggest scandal and the biggest coverup.”

Trump attacked Harris by misrepresenting her record. He falsely accused her of never visiting the U.S.-Mexico border; she did so in June 2021. He falsely said she was sent to Europe to deter Russia from invading Ukraine, when her trip was to warn Ukraine and rally allies. And he misleadingly accused her of wanting to ban gas vehicles. The Biden administration has implemented new emissions limits to cut greenhouse gases and encourage investments in electric cars.

Biden has insisted that he is staying in the race. Harris kicked off a three-day campaign swing in Las Vegas, defending Biden and assailing Trump’s agenda. Campaign spokesman Ammar Moussa said, “Trump’s bizarre and unhinged rants won’t stop Vice President Harris from defending the Biden-Harris record and prosecuting the case against Donald Trump’s extreme record.”

Trump spoke at his golf club near Miami, his first campaign stop since a rally in Virginia on June 28, the day after the debate with Biden. He was joined by Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.), who is a finalist to be Trump’s running mate, alongside Sen. J.D. Vance (R-Ohio). With his formal nomination coming next week at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, Trump alluded to the suspense of his vice-presidential search by saying the press was probably expecting Trump to announce that he was picking Rubio at Tuesday’s rally. But he did not.

At one point, he teased that Rubio “may or may not” be in the Senate.

Monique Podsada, 43, drove four hours from Tampa to Doral, Fla., with her husband, Richard, 42, hoping they would hear Trump announce his vice-presidential pick. Monique said she thought the news was imminent as Trump mentioned Rubio, especially when he referenced him as he spoke about Harris. She said she worried that a Democratic nominee other than Biden could hinder Trump’s aim to win big.

“She’s mentally cognitive, I’ll give her that,” Richard said.

Trump adopted the emerging Republican criticism of any Democratic attempt to replace Biden as violating the will of primary voters. He also challenged the president to a golf match, to which the Biden campaign responded by saying that Biden “doesn’t have time for Donald Trump’s weird antics.”

Sen. Rick Scott (R-Fla.) also attended the rally. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis , who challenged Trump for the Republican presidential nomination, did not.

Monu Bambroo explores Whisper, a speech to text model from OpenAI that you can use to transcribe audio files. The model is trained on a large dataset of English audio and text. The model is optimized for transcribing audio files that contain speech in English. The model can also be used to transcribe audio files that contain speech in other languages.

Whisper is an advanced automatic speech recognition (ASR) system, developed using 680,000 hours of supervised multilingual and multitask data from the web. This extensive and diverse data set enhances its ability to handle various accents, background noise, and technical jargon. Whisper not only transcribes multiple languages but also translates them into English. We are making the models and inference code open source to provide a robust foundation for developing practical applications and advancing research in speech processing.

The Whisper model, developed by OpenAI, converts speech to text and is ideal for transcribing audio files. Trained on an extensive dataset of English audio and text, it excels at transcribing English speech but can also handle other languages, producing English text as output.

We have Whisper models accessible through the Azure Open AI service.  The Whisper model by Azure OpenAI provides varied solutions for different scenarios. It excels in transcribing and analyzing prerecorded audio and video files. It is also ideal for the quick processing of individual audio files. It can transcribe phone call recordings and provide analytics such as call summary, sentiment, key topics, and custom insights. Similarly, it can transcribe meeting recordings and provide analytics like meeting summary, meeting chapters, and action item extraction. The Whisper model also supports contact center voice agent services like call routing and interactive voice response and is suitable for application-specific voice assistants in various scenarios such as set-top boxes, mobile apps, in-car systems, and more. However, it does not support real-time transcription, pronunciation assessment, or translation of live or prerecorded audio. It is recommended for translating prerecorded audio from other languages into English.

Developers using Whisper in Azure AI Speech benefit from additional capabilities such as processing of large file sizes up to 1GB, speaker diarization, and the ability to fine-tune the Whisper model using audio plus human-labeled transcripts.

For accessing Whisper, developers can use the Azure OpenAI Studio. The Whisper REST API supports translation services from a growing list of languages to English. The Whisper model is a significant addition to Azure AI’s broad portfolio of capabilities, offering innovative ways to improve business productivity and user experience.

Preprocessing in the context of audio transcription involves preparing the audio data to improve the quality and accuracy of the transcription. It’s a crucial step that can significantly impact the results. Here are the main steps involved in audio preprocessing:

• Trimming: This involves removing unnecessary parts of the audio, such as silences at the beginning or end of the audio file. Trimming can help reduce the size of the audio file and also eliminate sections that might cause inaccuracies in the transcription.
• Segmentation: For long audio files, it can be beneficial to break them down into smaller, manageable segments. This can make the transcription process more efficient and also improve accuracy as it’s easier to manage and process shorter audio clips.
• Audio Quality Enhancement: This may involve tasks like noise reduction, volume normalization, and echo cancellation. Improving the audio quality can significantly enhance the accuracy of the transcription.
• Audio Format Conversion: The audio files need to be in a format that is compatible with the transcription service. If they are not, they must be converted into a compatible format.These preprocessing steps are primarily aimed at reducing potential sources of error in the transcription and making the audio data more manageable for the transcription service.

You can use PyDub  is a simple and easy-to-use Python library for audio processing tasks such as slicing, concatenating, and exporting audio files.

Post Processing

In post-processing, the initial transcript, which could potentially contain errors or inconsistencies, is passed to the language model. The language model, guided by its training and potentially a system prompt, generates a corrected or refined version of the transcript.

Ocasio-Cortez Introduces Articles of Impeachment Against Justice Thomas and Justice Alito

Washington D.C.— Today, July 10, 2024, Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (NY-14) introduced articles of impeachment against United States Supreme Court Justices Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito.

“The unchecked corruption crisis on the Supreme Court has now spiraled into a Constitutional crisis threatening American democracy writ large. Justices Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito’s pattern of refusal to recuse from consequential matters before the court in which they hold widely documented financial and personal entanglements constitutes a grave threat to American rule of law, the integrity of our democracy, and one of the clearest cases for which the tool of impeachment was designed.

The Constitution of the United States explicitly outlines a higher standard of conduct for the judiciary to meet, far surpassing its existing bars on treason, bribery, and other high crimes and misdemeanors for all civil officers: the standard of Good Behavior. Judicial ethics and rules, to which even the lowest level judges are held, make those standards clear. The lifetime appointments of Supreme Court justices make enforcement of these standards a solemn responsibility for the protection of our democracy,” said the Congresswoman. 

“Justice Thomas and Alito’s repeated failure over decades to disclose that they received millions of dollars in gifts from individuals with business before the court is explicitly against the law. And their refusal to recuse from the specific matters and cases before the court in which their benefactors and spouses are implicated represents nothing less than a constitutional crisis. These failures alone would amount to a deep transgression worthy of standard removal in any lower court, and would disqualify any nominee to the highest court from confirmation in the first place.

Given the court’s demonstrated inability to preserve its own legitimate conduct, it is incumbent upon Congress to contain the threat this poses to our democracy and the hundreds of millions of Americans harmed by the crisis of corruption unfurling within the court. Congress has a legal, moral, and democratic obligation to impeach,” she continued.

The first impeachment resolution includes the following impeachment articles against Justice Thomas: 

• Failure to disclose financial income, gifts and reimbursements, property interests, liabilities, and transactions, among other information.
• Refusal to recuse from matters concerning his spouse’s legal interest in cases before the court.
• Refusal to recuse from matters involving his spouse’s financial interest in cases before the court.

The second impeachment resolution includes the following impeachment articles against Justice Alito: 

• Refusal to recuse from cases in which he had a personal bias or prejudice concerning a party in cases before the court.

The Congresswoman maintains that such conduct—while under a Judicial Oath to “faithfully and impartially discharge and perform” duties and a Constitutional Oath to “support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic”—warrants impeachment, trial, removal from office, and disqualification from holding future office in the United States of America. 

On June 11, 2024, Congresswoman Ocasio-Cortez and Congressman Jamie Raskin hosted an oversight roundtable with expert panelists and legislators, including Senator Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI), entitled “High Court, Low Standards, and Dark Money: Flagging a Supreme Court Ethics Crisis in America,” to examine corruption on the court. 

On June 20, they wrote a letter to Chief Justice John Roberts to learn what immediate action he would take to restore public trust in the Court amidst severe ethical conflicts.  

Additionally, on June 25, the lawmakers introduced the High Court Gift Ban Act to prohibit Supreme Court justices from receiving gifts valued at more than $50, bringing them in line with Members of Congress and other federal officials.
