✍️ How to Start a Sports Persuasive Essay?

You may be familiar with the term “hook” concerning the essay writing. If not, well, it’s a catchy sentence or two at the beginning of the paper. It’s supposed to intrigue the reader and grab their attention so that they follow your train of thought.

The writer places a hook before the thesis statement of their paper. This way, the reader will be more focused on the core message.

Let’s be real:

Not everyone is interested in sports. Or not in the particular game that you center your paper around. So, in the persuasive essay on sports, a catchy hook is essential. You need an attention grabber to make anyone engaged. Plus, it helps to get a clear understanding of your thesis later. You can check out some college essay examples to better understand what we’re talking about.

Starting an essay with a hook ensures that your audience will want to keep reading.

So, how can you intrigue from the start?

There are several popular hooks for sports-related essays:

  • Quotations . A quotation is an engaging way to introduce your reader to the topic. Make sure the quote is relevant to the rest of the essay. “You have to expect things of yourself before you can do them.” – Michael Jordan
  • Fun Facts . Use some fun or unexpected info about sports to surprise a reader. It can be a great attention-grabber, especially if a reader is not knowledgeable on the subject. A record 202 countries participated in the 2004 Olympic Summer Games in Athens.
  • Personal Experience. Using personal experience in a hook is smart in several ways. First, it gives the reader a sense of the author’s presence. Second, it provides information in an engaging, conversational style. I couldn’t stand the idea of working out when I was younger.
  • Anecdotes . Similar to personal experience, anecdotes are entertaining stories. They can be based on a real narrative or be entirely made-up. Your task is to make them humorous. Do you know Jim Thorpe’s response when he received the gold medal for the Decathlon? When the King of Sweden said that Thorpe was the greatest athlete in the world, he said, “Thanks, King.”
  • Rhetorical Questions . Rhetorical questions don’t require an answer. They either state the obvious or encourage one’s thinking. Use them in a hook to immerse the reader into the subject. If LeBron James ends up taking the Cleveland Cavaliers to the playoffs now, and Carmelo Anthony can’t take the Denver Nuggets to the playoffs, what do you think that does to the Rookie of the Year voting?
  • Useful Definition . Starting the first paragraph with a definition sets the tone for your essay. It is an informative, specific lead to your topic. Deck work is the mood-setting moves performed on the deck once the music starts before the swimmers enter the water.
  • Controversial statement . There are usually two sides to any controversy. Your reader will either agree or disagree with a given statement but will stay invested. The U.S. men’s soccer team won’t win a World Cup in the foreseeable future.

Make sure not to make baseless assumptions and statements.

📝 Writing a Persuasive Essay about Sports

Now that you’ve seen the topics let’s talk about writing. Persuasive essays differ from the other academic papers in both the goal and structure. You have to keep in mind that you’re composing not for yourself but for the reader. That’s why you have to present your arguments logically and coherently.

You should outline the persuasive essay before writing.

Here are some tips on writing a killer persuasive essay about sports:

  • Choose a topic that you can handle. Don’t try to compose a paper on the game that you know nothing about. It’s too tiring and time-consuming. Remember that it takes months for a fan to learn everything about their favorite sport. If you don’t have such years-long passion, focus on the more straightforward aspects of your topic.
  • Research beforehand . Even if you’re a sports fan, and especially if you’re not. There are plenty of rules and scandals that you need to consider to sound convincing. Look up some fun facts or entertaining stories. Sports topics usually give you plenty of material to play around with.
  • Take notes. The more notes you take while researching, the less work you’ll have to do after. And you won’t have to reread the materials to find that one sports event that you’ve forgotten about. The industry is quite vibrant with exceptional cases. Make sure you keep track of all the information that might be useful.
  • Pick the issues to discuss according to the evidence . If you can’t support an argument with enough credible proof, don’t include it in your essay. Both argumentative and persuasive essays require you to stay on top of your argumentation.
  • Outline and draft your paper before writing the final version. When you’re writing on recent events, you may get new information at any moment. So, draft before composing. In case you decide to include some new evidence or improve an argument, it won’t be messy. Outlining will help to organize your thoughts comprehensively and concisely.

Read the sports news before writing the final version of the essay.

How to Write a Non-Cliche College Essay About Sports + Examples

What’s covered:, what makes a sports essay cliche.

  • How To Make Your Sports Essay Unique

Great Examples of College Essays About Sports

Where to get your college essay edited for free, or by an expert.

You’ve been brainstorming essay topics for your college applications, and you think you’ve finally found the right one: an extended metaphor likening your experience on the field with overcoming personal struggles. The problem: many other students have this same thought.

The purpose of a college essay is to make yourself stand out as a unique individual, but when students write about sports, they often blend in. Because of that, students are usually advised to pick a different topic.

That being said, it is possible to write a non-cliche college essay about sports if you put in a little extra effort. Read along to learn how to make your sports essay different from all the other sports essays.

Sports essays are cliche when they follow a standard trajectory. Some of these trajectories include writing a story about:

  • An agonizing defeat
  • Forging bonds with teammates
  • Overcoming adversity
  • Overcoming an injury
  • Refusing to quit
  • Victory during a big game

Because sports essays have very similar themes and “lessons learned,” it can be difficult to make your story stand out. These trajectories also often focus too much on the sport or storyline, and not enough on the writer’s reflections and personality.

As you write your essay, try to think about what your experience says about you rather than what you learned from your experience. You are more than just one lesson you learned!

(Keep in mind that the sports essay is not the only college essay cliche. Learn about other essay cliches and how to fix them in our complete guide).

How to Make Your Sports Essay Unique

1. focus on a specific moment or reflection..

The college essay is a way for students to humanize themselves to admissions officers. You do not feel human if you are describing yourself as just another player on the field!

One important way to make your essay about you (not just about sports) is by focusing on a specific moment in time and inviting the reader to join you in that moment. Explain to the reader what it would be like to be sitting in that locker room as you questioned the values of the other players on your team. Ask your reader to sit with you on the cot in the trainer’s room as your identity was stripped away from you when they said “your body can’t take this anymore.” Bring your reader to the dinner table and involve them in your family’s conversation about how sports were affecting your mental health and your treatment of those around you.

Intense descriptions of a specific experience will evoke emotions in your reader and allow them to connect with you and feel for you.

When in doubt, avoid anything that can be covered by ESPN. On ESPN, we see the games, we see the benches, we even see the locker rooms and training rooms. Take your reader somewhere different and show them something unique.

2. Use sports to point out broader themes in your life.

The main risk when writing about sports is neglecting to write about yourself. Before you get started, think about the main values that you want to express in your sports essay. Sports are simply your avenue for telling the reader what makes you unique.

As a test, imagine if you were a pianist. Would you be able to talk about these same values? What if you were a writer? Or a chemist? Articulating your values is the end, and sports should simply be your means.

Some values that you might want to focus on:

  • Autonomy (you want to be able to set your mind to anything and achieve it on your own)
  • Growth (you seek improvement constantly)
  • Curiosity (you are willing to try anything once)
  • Vulnerability (you aren’t afraid to fail, as long as you give it your all)
  • Community (you value the feedback of others and need camaraderie to succeed)
  • Craft (you think that with deliberate care, anything can be perfected)
  • Responsibility (you believe that you owe something to those around you and perhaps they also owe something to you)

You can use the ESPN check again to make sure that you are using sports as an avenue to show your depth.

Things ESPN covers: how a player reacts to defeat, how injuries affect a player’s gameplay/attitude, how players who don’t normally work well together are working together on their new team.

Things ESPN doesn’t cover: the conversation that a player had with their mother about fear of death before going into a big surgery (value: family and connection), the ways that the intense pressure to succeed consumed a player to the point they couldn’t be there for the people in their life (value: supporting others and community), the body image issues that weigh on a player’s mind when playing their sport and how they overcame those (value: health and growth).

3. Turn a cliche storyline on its head.

There’s no getting around the fact that sports essays are often cliche. But there is a way to confront the cliche head-on. For example, lots of people write essays about the lessons they learned from an injury, victory, and so on, but fewer students explain how they are embracing those lessons.

Perhaps you learned that competition is overwhelming for you and you prefer teamwork, so you switched from playing basketball to playing Dungeons & Dragons. Maybe, when your softball career ended abruptly, you had to find a new identity and that’s when you became obsessed with your flower garden and decided to pursue botany. Or maybe, you have stuck with football through it all, but your junior-year mental health struggle showed you that football should be fun and you have since started a nonprofit for local children to healthily engage with sports.

If your story itself is more cliche, try bringing readers to the present moment with you and show why the cliche matters and what it did for you. This requires a fair amount of creativity. Ensure you’re not parroting a frequently used topic by really thinking deeply to find your own unique spin.

Night had robbed the academy of its daytime colors, yet there was comfort in the dim lights that cast shadows of our advances against the bare studio walls. Silhouettes of roundhouse kicks, spin crescent kicks, uppercuts and the occasional butterfly kick danced while we sparred. She approached me, eyes narrowed with the trace of a smirk challenging me. “Ready spar!” Her arm began an upward trajectory targeting my shoulder, a common first move. I sidestepped — only to almost collide with another flying fist. Pivoting my right foot, I snapped my left leg, aiming my heel at her midsection. The center judge raised one finger.

There was no time to celebrate, not in the traditional sense at least. Master Pollard gave a brief command greeted with a unanimous “Yes, sir” and the thud of 20 hands dropping-down-and-giving-him-30, while the “winners” celebrated their victory with laps as usual.

Three years ago, seven-thirty in the evening meant I was a warrior. It meant standing up straighter, pushing a little harder, “Yes, sir” and “Yes, ma’am”, celebrating birthdays by breaking boards, never pointing your toes, and familiarity. Three years later, seven-thirty in the morning meant I was nervous.

The room is uncomfortably large. The sprung floor soaks up the checkerboard of sunlight piercing through the colonial windows. The mirrored walls further illuminate the studio and I feel the light scrutinizing my sorry attempts at a pas de bourrée, while capturing the organic fluidity of the dancers around me. “Chassé en croix, grand battement, pique, pirouette.” I follow the graceful limbs of the woman in front of me, her legs floating ribbons, as she executes what seems to be a perfect ronds de jambes. Each movement remains a negotiation. With admirable patience, Ms. Tan casts me a sympathetic glance.

There is no time to wallow in the misery that is my right foot. Taekwondo calls for dorsiflexion; pointed toes are synonymous with broken toes. My thoughts drag me into a flashback of the usual response to this painful mistake: “You might as well grab a tutu and head to the ballet studio next door.” Well, here I am Master Pollard, unfortunately still following your orders to never point my toes, but no longer feeling the satisfaction that comes with being a third degree black belt with 5 years of experience quite literally under her belt. It’s like being a white belt again — just in a leotard and ballet slippers.

But the appetite for new beginnings that brought me here doesn’t falter. It is only reinforced by the classical rendition of “Dancing Queen” that floods the room and the ghost of familiarity that reassures me that this new beginning does not and will not erase the past. After years spent at the top, it’s hard to start over. But surrendering what you are only leads you to what you may become. In Taekwondo, we started each class reciting the tenets: honor, courtesy, integrity, perseverance, self-control, courage, humility, and knowledge, and I have never felt that I embodied those traits more so than when I started ballet.

The thing about change is that it eventually stops making things so different. After nine different schools, four different countries, three different continents, fluency in Tamil, Norwegian, and English, there are more blurred lines than there are clear fragments. My life has not been a tactfully executed, gold medal-worthy Taekwondo form with each movement defined, nor has it been a series of frappés performed by a prima ballerina with each extension identical and precise, but thankfully it has been like the dynamics of a spinning back kick, fluid, and like my chances of landing a pirouette, unpredictable.

Why it works:

What’s especially powerful about this essay is that the author uses detailed imagery to convey a picture of what they’re experiencing, so much so that the reader is along for the ride. This works as a sports essay not only because of the language and sensory details, but also because the writer focuses on a specific moment in time, while at the same time exploring why Taekwondo is such an important part of their life.

After the emotional image is created, the student finishes their essay with valuable reflection. With the reflection, they show admissions officers that they are mature and self-aware. Self-awareness comes through with statements like “surrendering what you are only leads you to what you may become” and maturity can be seen through the student’s discussion of values “honor, courtesy, integrity, perseverance, self-control, courage, humility, and knowledge, and I have never felt that I embodied those traits more so than when I started ballet.” These are the kinds of comments that should find their way into a sports essay!

“Advanced females ages 13 to 14 please proceed to staging with your coaches at this time.” Skittering around the room, eyes wide and pleading, I frantically explained my situation to nearby coaches. The seconds ticked away in my head; every polite refusal increased my desperation.

Despair weighed me down. I sank to my knees as a stream of competitors, coaches, and officials flowed around me. My dojang had no coach, and the tournament rules prohibited me from competing without one.

Although I wanted to remain strong, doubts began to cloud my mind. I could not help wondering: what was the point of perfecting my skills if I would never even compete? The other members of my team, who had found coaches minutes earlier, attempted to comfort me, but I barely heard their words. They couldn’t understand my despair at being left on the outside, and I never wanted them to understand.

Since my first lesson 12 years ago, the members of my dojang have become family. I have watched them grow up, finding my own happiness in theirs. Together, we have honed our kicks, blocks, and strikes. We have pushed one another to aim higher and become better martial artists. Although my dojang had searched for a reliable coach for years, we had not found one. When we attended competitions in the past, my teammates and I had always gotten lucky and found a sympathetic coach. Now, I knew this practice was unsustainable. It would devastate me to see the other members of my dojang in my situation, unable to compete and losing hope as a result. My dojang needed a coach, and I decided it was up to me to find one.

I first approached the adults in the dojang – both instructors and members’ parents. However, these attempts only reacquainted me with polite refusals. Everyone I asked told me they couldn’t devote multiple weekends per year to competitions. I soon realized that I would have become the coach myself.

At first, the inner workings of tournaments were a mystery to me. To prepare myself for success as a coach, I spent the next year as an official and took coaching classes on the side. I learned everything from motivational strategies to technical, behind-the-scenes components of Taekwondo competitions. Though I emerged with new knowledge and confidence in my capabilities, others did not share this faith.

Parents threw me disbelieving looks when they learned that their children’s coach was only a child herself. My self-confidence was my armor, deflecting their surly glances. Every armor is penetrable, however, and as the relentless barrage of doubts pounded my resilience, it began to wear down. I grew unsure of my own abilities.

Despite the attack, I refused to give up. When I saw the shining eyes of the youngest students preparing for their first competition, I knew I couldn’t let them down. To quit would be to set them up to be barred from competing like I was. The knowledge that I could solve my dojang’s longtime problem motivated me to overcome my apprehension.

Now that my dojang flourishes at competitions, the attacks on me have weakened, but not ended. I may never win the approval of every parent; at times, I am still tormented by doubts, but I find solace in the fact that members of my dojang now only worry about competing to the best of their abilities.

Now, as I arrive at a tournament with my students, I close my eyes and remember the past. I visualize the frantic search for a coach and the chaos amongst my teammates as we compete with one another to find coaches before the staging calls for our respective divisions. I open my eyes to the exact opposite scene. Lacking a coach hurt my ability to compete, but I am proud to know that no member of my dojang will have to face that problem again.

In the beginning, you might think this is another cliche sports essay about overcoming adversity. But instead, it becomes a unique statement and coming-of-age tale that reads as a suspenseful narrative.

The author connects their experience with martial arts to larger themes in their life but manages to do so without riffing off of tried-and-true themes. Through statements like “I knew I couldn’t let them down. To quit would be to set them up to be barred from competing like I was” we learn about the students values and their desire to be there for those who depend on them.

The student also brings it full circle, demonstrating their true transformation. By using the “Same, but Different” ending technique , the student places themself in the same environment that we saw in the intro, but experiences it differently due to their actions throughout the narrative. This is very compelling!

“1…2…3…4 pirouettes! New record!” My friends cheered as I landed my turns. Pleased with my progress, I gazed down at my worn-out pointe shoes. The sweltering blisters, numbing ice-baths, and draining late-night practices did not seem so bad after all. Next goal: five turns.

For as long as I can remember, ballet, in all its finesse and glamor, had kept me driven day to day. As a child, the lithe ballerinas, donning ethereal costumes as they floated across the stage, were my motivation. While others admired Messi and Adele, I idolized Carlos Acosta, principal dancer of the Royal Ballet.

As I devoted more time and energy towards my craft, I became obsessed with improving my technique. I would stretch for hours after class, forcing my leg one inch higher in an effort to mirror the Dance Magazine cover girls. I injured my feet and ruined pair after pair of pointe shoes, turning on wood, cement, and even grass to improve my balance as I spun. At competitions, the dancers with the 180-degree leg extensions, endless turns, and soaring leaps—the ones who received “Bravos!” from the roaring audience—further pushed me to refine my skills and perfect my form. I believed that, with enough determination, I would one day attain their level of perfection. Reaching the quadruple-pirouette milestone only intensified my desire to accomplish even more.

My efforts seemed to have come to fruition two summers ago when I was accepted to dance with Moscow’s Bolshoi Ballet at their renowned New York City summer intensive. I walked into my first session eager to learn from distinguished ballet masters and worldly dancers, already anticipating my improvement. Yet, as I danced alongside the accomplished ballerinas, I felt out of place. Despite their clean technique and professional training, they did not aim for glorious leg extensions or prodigious leaps. When they performed their turn combinations, most of them only executed two turns as I attempted four.

“Dancers, double-pirouettes only.”

Taken aback and confused, I wondered why our teacher expected so little from us. The other ballerinas seemed content, gracing the studio with their simple movements.

As I grew closer with my Moscow roommates, I gradually learned that their training emphasized the history of the art form instead of stylistic tricks. Rather than show off their physical ability, their performances aimed to convey a story, one that embodied the rich culture of ballet and captured both the legacy of the dancers before them and their own artistry. As I observed my friends more intently in repertoire class, I felt the pain of the grief-stricken white swan from Swan Lake, the sass of the flirtatious Kitri from Don Quijote, and I gradually saw what I had overlooked before. My definition of talent had been molded by crowd-pleasing elements—whirring pirouettes, gravity-defying leaps, and mind-blowing leg extensions. This mindset slowly stripped me from the roots of my passion and my personal connection with ballet.

With the Bolshoi, I learned to step back and explore the meaning behind each step and the people behind the scenes. Ballet carries history in its movements, from the societal values of the era to each choreographer’s unique flair. As I uncovered the messages behind each pirouette, kick, and jump, my appreciation for ballet grew beyond my obsession with raw athleticism and developed into a love for the art form’s emotive abilities in bridging the dancers with the audience. My journey as an artist has allowed me to see how technical execution is only the means to a greater understanding between dancer and spectator, between storyteller and listener. The elegance and complexity of ballet does not revolve around astonishing stunts but rather the evocative strength and artistry manifested in the dancer, in me. It is the combination of sentiments, history, tradition, and passion that has allowed ballet and its lessons of human connection to become my lifestyle both on and off stage.

This essay is about lessons. While the author is a dancer, this narrative isn’t really about ballet, per se — it’s about the author’s personal growth. It is purposefully reflective as the student shows a nice character arc that begins with an eager young ballerina and ends with a reflection on their past. The primary strength of this essay is the honesty and authenticity that the student approaches it with.

In the end, the student turns a cliche on its head as they embrace the idea of overcoming adversity and demonstrate how the adversity, in this case, was their own stereotypes about their art. It’s beautiful!

“Getting beat is one thing – it’s part of competing – but I want no part in losing.” Coach Rob Stark’s motto never fails to remind me of his encouragement on early-morning bus rides to track meets around the state. I’ve always appreciated the phrase, but an experience last June helped me understand its more profound, universal meaning.

Stark, as we affectionately call him, has coached track at my high school for 25 years. His care, dedication, and emphasis on developing good character has left an enduring impact on me and hundreds of other students. Not only did he help me discover my talent and love for running, but he also taught me the importance of commitment and discipline and to approach every endeavor with the passion and intensity that I bring to running. When I learned a neighboring high school had dedicated their track to a longtime coach, I felt that Stark deserved similar honors.

Our school district’s board of education indicated they would only dedicate our track to Stark if I could demonstrate that he was extraordinary. I took charge and mobilized my teammates to distribute petitions, reach out to alumni, and compile statistics on the many team and individual champions Stark had coached over the years. We received astounding support, collecting almost 3,000 signatures and pages of endorsements from across the community. With help from my teammates, I presented this evidence to the board.

They didn’t bite.

Most members argued that dedicating the track was a low priority. Knowing that we had to act quickly to convince them of its importance, I called a team meeting where we drafted a rebuttal for the next board meeting. To my surprise, they chose me to deliver it. I was far from the best public speaker in the group, and I felt nervous about going before the unsympathetic board again. However, at that second meeting, I discovered that I enjoy articulating and arguing for something that I’m passionate about.

Public speaking resembles a cross country race. Walking to the starting line, you have to trust your training and quell your last minute doubts. When the gun fires, you can’t think too hard about anything; your performance has to be instinctual, natural, even relaxed. At the next board meeting, the podium was my starting line. As I walked up to it, familiar butterflies fluttered in my stomach. Instead of the track stretching out in front of me, I faced the vast audience of teachers, board members, and my teammates. I felt my adrenaline build, and reassured myself: I’ve put in the work, my argument is powerful and sound. As the board president told me to introduce myself, I heard, “runners set” in the back of my mind. She finished speaking, and Bang! The brief silence was the gunshot for me to begin.

The next few minutes blurred together, but when the dust settled, I knew from the board members’ expressions and the audience’s thunderous approval that I had run quite a race. Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough; the board voted down our proposal. I was disappointed, but proud of myself, my team, and our collaboration off the track. We stood up for a cause we believed in, and I overcame my worries about being a leader. Although I discovered that changing the status quo through an elected body can be a painstakingly difficult process and requires perseverance, I learned that I enjoy the challenges this effort offers. Last month, one of the school board members joked that I had become a “regular” – I now often show up to meetings to advocate for a variety of causes, including better environmental practices in cafeterias and safer equipment for athletes.

Just as Stark taught me, I worked passionately to achieve my goal. I may have been beaten when I appealed to the board, but I certainly didn’t lose, and that would have made Stark proud.

This essay uses the idea of sports to explore a more profound topic—growing through relationships. They really embrace using sports as an avenue to tell the reader about a specific experience that changed the way they approach the world.

The emphasis on relationships is why this essay works well and doesn’t fall into a cliche. The narrator grows not because of their experience with track but because of their relationship with their coach, who inspired them to evolve and become a leader.

Tips for Writing an Essay on Sports: A Student's Guide

Sport is a topic of great interest to all generations. For college students, professors like to assign sports topics to students. You may find you may have to write about topics like the role of sports in teaching life skills or the adverse effects of doping on sports. Here are some tips for writing an essay on sports.

preparing an essay

Do research

You will need to start with some research into your topic. You must concentrate on your research of a specific topic lest it is easy to get sidetracked. Materials you may need to use will include articles, books, interviews etc. There are also websites to help with your preparation, such as PrepAway.com .

Study the materials and make notes of relevant sources you want to use. You will have to cite these sources and use the right citation methods. Today, you can use software to help you do this.

Create an outline

Writing an essay on sports is like any other essay. You need to create an outline before you start writing. Creating an outline forces you to think clearly, plan and decide how to structure your essay. What are the main points you need to cover?

Once you have your main points, you can start structuring them by using headings, subheadings and paragraphs. Your paragraphs should each cover a specific point and should flow logically from one to another.

Essay writing help

When writing a sports essay, you may need help from an essay writing service. A writer for hire can help you to write any type of essay for you. For example, you may have to write about the influence of sports on mental health. If you feel out of your depth, essay writers on EduBirdie provide professional online help for students. You will receive a quality essay within your deadline. You can learn from it how to write your own essay in the future.

Write a first draft

With your outline as a guide, you can write your first draft. Start with the body, as it is hard to write a good introduction before you know what you will write in your draft.

When writing the body, each paragraph should start with a topic sentence stating the key idea. After this, you can introduce evidence from your research to support it. Take your research and see how you can put it across to the reader in a way that’s easy to understand. Use any facts, graphs, or statistics that support your standpoint.

Always use simple words where you can instead of complex ones, and write with the reader in mind. You can use an app like Hemingway to check whether your writing is easy to read.

Craft your introduction and conclusion

When you finish your first draft, it will be easier to write your introduction and conclusion. In your introduction, you will give the reader insight into what the essay is about in a brief and engaging way.

You may decide to introduce your topic with an intriguing quote that makes the reader want to find out more. It can set the tone of your essay. You should also introduce the key points you will discuss. Your thesis statement comes at the end of your introduction and gives the main idea of your essay.

Your conclusion shouldn’t just be a repetition of your introduction. It should tie up all the different points you make and explain how each one proves your thesis. It should leave the reader with a clear impression of the purpose and intent of your essay.

Proofread and edit

You should never submit an essay without proofreading and editing it first. Proofreading for grammar and spelling mistakes is easy today due to the use of software that does it for you. You still need to check it yourself because proofreading software can’t pick up issues like repetition or a lack of flow in your paragraphs.

It helps to have someone read your essay for you as you may be blind to certain errors. Reading your essay aloud can also help you to figure out where you could improve the flow.

A last word

Writing about sports can be interesting, especially if you are a sports enthusiast. Just remember that you will need to support your opinions with evidence from reliable sources. Spending time writing a strong outline is really worthwhile, as you can use it as a guide. Remember that your draft is only your first attempt. You will need to work on it and refine it until you are happy with the results.

Your chance of acceptance, your chancing factors, extracurriculars, writing about sports in college essays.

Hey guys, I'm a junior and I'm starting to think about the topics for my college essay. I'm really passionate about sports and it's been a significant part of my high school experience. Is it a good idea to write about sports in my college essay? Can you share any tips and suggestions for making it stand out?

Writing about sports in your college essay can be a great idea if you approach it in a unique and personal way. While it's true that some sports-related essay topics are considered cliché, like sports injuries or victories, there's still a way to make yours stand out.

Here are some tips and suggestions for making your sports essay stand out:

1. Focus on a specific aspect: Instead of writing about your entire sports experience, choose a specific aspect or moment that carries personal significance. For example, how your connection with a teammate shaped your perspective on teamwork or how a particular challenge on the field taught you perseverance and resilience.

2. Share personal growth: Rather than just discussing your accomplishments or stats, emphasize how your involvement in sports has contributed to your personal growth and character development. Mention the skills and qualities you've gained and how they'll contribute to your success in college and beyond.

3. Write about a unique experience: Avoid the clichés by writing about an unusual or unexpected experience related to sports. For example, an essay could focus on how coaching a youth sports team shaped your leadership skills or how organizing a charity sports tournament benefited your community.

4. Show your passion: Make sure your genuine love for the sport comes across in your writing. This could be reflected in the vivid description of memorable moments or the enthusiasm with which you talk about your dedication and commitment to the sport.

5. Connect it to your future goals: Tie your sports experiences to your academic and career aspirations to show the admissions committee how your background in sports will contribute to your future success. For example, if you have a passion for sports science or sports management, discuss how your experiences on the field have fueled your interest in those fields.

By considering these tips, you can craft a compelling essay about your passion for sports without falling into cliché territory. Remember to make your essay personal, focused, and reflective of your personal growth, and you'll be well on your way to writing a standout sports-related essay.

Remember, your task is to encourage your reader to go through your essay and read it till the end. At the end of your paper, you will need to mention a thesis statement: a sentence that reveals what you will be talking about further.

  • The topic sentence with a key idea.
  • Substantiated topic sentence and the main argument
  • An example or any fact to make the opinion sound reasonable

In the last paragraph, just summarize the main points of your essay. You may briefly restate your introductory statements and explain how each of the body parts supports your thesis. Usually, there is only one thing you need to avoid in conclusion: repetitions.

The role of sports in promoting good mental health

Sports is something that most people cannot imagine their everyday living without. The notion of sport had evolved in ancient times before the Olympic games in Greece started to take place. After the second industrial revolution, sport has become an extensively popular and admired subject in almost any school. As a means of entertainment and, at the same time, a way to relieve tension and move one’s energy in a good direction, the sport has always been associated with individual growth and physical health maintenance. These days, schoolers, students, adults, and older people engage themselves in a variety of sports activities for different reasons. But regardless of the purpose, all of them definitely achieve one target – better mental health. Indeed, performing sports activities regularly contributes to improved mental health by reducing stress, promoting a team spirit and social inclusion, and preventing depression.

Engaging oneself in a sports activity is positively correlated with better social inclusion. In essence, sport is a team activity, which means that doing a particular kind of sports implies interaction with other individuals. Building social contacts while engaging in sports is exciting and easy: finding common ground with teammates or a sports partner is not complicated since you already share at least one significant interest. A recent study by British scientists suggests that individuals who did sports during their school years show higher social inclusion levels and can easily make new acquaintances in adult age. This means that sport plays a critical role in defining an individual’s future behavior in socializing with other people. And since sports promotes an ability to better engage in social groups and  make new acquaintances, it also contributes to an individual’s mental health. As long as humans live in a community and need communication for a healthy and happy living, sports is the key.

Regular physical activity does not let stress accumulate and negatively influence one’s mental health. The reason why people experience less stress if they give preference to working out on a regular basis is endorphins production. Endorphins are particular neurotransmitters that a human brain produces as a result of physical activity. Neurotransmitters promote good feelings and make it harder for various stress factors to irritate oneself. Additionally, endorphins produced by a body while performing a sports activity promote a better quality of sleep. The latter, in its turn, leads to significant stress reduction as well. Apart from a guaranteed stress reduction, sports activities reduce the adverse effects of stress. Hence, one can come to the conclusion that since stress is an inevitable and highly annoying phenomenon, it is critical to seek preventative measures, and sports seems to cope with the issue of stress and constant tension brilliantly. Therefore, a moderate workout contributes to one’s mental health in the long term.

Finally, sport has been proven to be one of the most potent remedies for depression. According to what clinicians claim, depression impacts both mental and physical health way worse than diabetes. Therefore, depression is a condition that needs treatment. However, it is highly possible to prevent depression just by exercising and adding some sport to one’s daily routine. Sports influence the human brain almost in the same way that medical drugs do: it promotes the brain’s better capacity to absorb serotonin. Not less important, sport activities contribute to nerve cell growth and prevent cells in the hippocampus from dying. Besides, physical activity has been found to improve self-esteem, which in turn improves body image and self-perception. Overall, a regular sport activity can not only guarantee depression alleviation but also prevent further disorders that have to do with psyche.

All in all, sports can reasonably be deemed a natural remedy not only against physical but also multiple mental conditions. Just by performing moderate exercises a few times a week, one can make their life go in a different, healthier direction. Performing sports activities can reasonably promote stress-free life since exercising influences endorphins production in the brain. Additionally, a regular sport promotes better social inclusion and facilitates communication with peers. Finally, regular exercises serve as a solution to depression. It is critical to preserve one’s mental health, so working out is something to begin with straightaway.

How to Write a Successful 5-Paragraph Essay on Sports

Writing a five-paragraph essay about sports follows the same process you learned in middle school or high school about how to organize an essay. The basic components of your sports essay are:

  • Introduction
  • Body – Point #1
  • Body – Point #2
  • Body – Point #3

That general framework can be used effectively for virtually any paper, including yours. For your sports piece, preparation is key. Here’s how you should get ready to do your paper and where to go from there.

How Should I Prepare for My 5-Paragraph Essay on Sports?

First all, do your research. Read extensively about the subject you’re writing about, take thorough notes, and make sure you have a firm grasp on the ins and outs of your selected topic. Next, create a rough outline. It will be helpful if you write a sentence or two about what you want to include in the introduction and for each paragraph after that. This will give you a chance to consider what the most important elements of each paragraph should be before you write them out and elaborate on them.

How Do I Make My Essay on Sports Stand Out?

Consider what makes the sport you chose for your topic unique. Who are the iconic athletes and what have they accomplished other than success for their team? Try to discover some kind of greater truth within your topic and present it to the reader in a meaningful way. Evoking emotion in the reader will make your essay memorable, so do your best to translate your enthusiasm and passion onto the page by using powerful language and a variety of strong adjectives.

How to Write a Solid Introduction

Your introductory paragraph should explain the problem, events, or situation you will discuss in a concise way. You should outline the three points that will be addressed in detail in each of the three paragraphs that form the body. That way not only will you know what to write about as you go, your reader will easily be able to follow the progression of your paper as they go.

Think of your intro as a way to let the reader know what the piece is about and why they should continue reading. If your paper seeks to explain a pattern found among athletes in their rookie season for example, state what implications this discovery might have. This will give the reader a good reason to read on.

The 3-Part Body of an Effective Sports Essay

Each paragraph in the body should completely explain their designated main point. When you move onto the next paragraph, the idea explained in the previous paragraph should be coherent and leave no obvious questions unanswered. Be sure to keep the focus on your sport, team, or athlete without veering off on tangents. If you do decide to go into some backstory within your essay, keep it concise and relevant.

You need to wrap up your paper at the end with a strong conclusive statement. Be sure to make sense of your main points and overall argument with a logical ending that summarizes and ties your paper together. A great way to leave the reader is with a sentence that leaves them in contemplation. Read your final sentence out loud when you finish writing your essay and see if it resonates.

Tips for Successful Writing about Sports

Your tone does not have to be rigid and overly formal for a sports related essay. The topic calls for an informal tone, so don’t hesitate to express yourself in a semi-casual way. Take extra time when editing your paper and making revisions. Read it through at least three times for errors and structural improvements, and then read it again and makes changes accordingly to the content until your essay flows effortlessly.

We call “sport” any activity that requires a psycho-physical effort on the part of those who carry it out and has a recreational intent. People have enjoyed both these characteristics in sporting activities since the times of Greeks and Romans. Athletes performed in various disciplines before an audience: from the beginning, therefore, the sport had a role in entertainment and life of individuals.

In sports, two components are joined together: on the one hand, we have the physical effort required on the part of the athlete, and on the other, the entertainment aspect offered to the spectators. The athletes’ physical and mental efforts are rewarded through various sources of remuneration; these sources can in part be traced precisely in the proceeds from ticket sales, merchandising, and sponsors’ investments.

Athletes are required to maintain a high level of performance for a longer or shorter period. Some sports completely take over the lives of those who perform them at high levels (such as football in Italy or baseball in America), by providing very high salaries and care of all kinds, from medical to everyday life management.

However, there are other athletes who, despite representing their country in all national and international sporting events, maintain more than one occupation and have to deal with the difficulties and commitments we all face from time to time.

The tendency to idealize athletes who, due to their performance or their personality, succeed in gaining public attention, has allowed some of them to lead, in parallel with sporting activities, a second career. In some cases, this is a performance through excesses and sensationalism. In others instead, these people have managed to lay the foundations to be able to reinvent themselves as sports commentators, coaches or in other careers, to secure a future even after closing that window of strength and agility that characterizes the young body but do not last forever.

Ever since man invented the sporting events, the link between physical activity and entertainment has always been very tight: the athletes of ancient Greece were remembered as great footballers of the past.

It is sad to realize that some sports and some athletes get practically no recognition comparing to their more famous cousins. Moreover, they are almost ignored, even when the services offered by those who practice them allow the home team to qualify or win international competitions. Perhaps with an education in sport that broadens the panorama beyond the “usual” football, these sports workers would also get the glory they deserve.

On balance…

Writing about sports can be fun, especially if you are a sports enthusiast. For instance, if you are a football fan, writing why football is the best sports essay should not be a problem at all!

Or you can come up with something even more exciting, like Should video games be considered sport? argumentative essay.

Just remember to support your opinion with proven facts from trusted sources, logically structure your essay, quote your sources, sound persuasive in an academic way, and proofread your essay. That’s a maelstrom of conditions making your copy worth an “A”!

Caitlin Clark held to just three points as Laney-Hamilton and Jones help Liberty rout Fever 104-68

  • Copy Link copied

NEW YORK (AP) — Caitlin Clark had just one basket and three points in the worst game of her young pro career, and the New York Liberty routed the Indiana Fever 104-68 on Sunday night.

“I think collectively as a team, we understand who kind of the head of the monster is on that team and we are trying to just make everything tough and difficult,” Liberty guard Sabrina Ionescu said. “Obviously, they came off a back-to-back, so it’s a little bit tough for them as well. But she’ll figure it out. It’s not that big of a deal to have a game like that.”

Betnijah Laney-Hamilton scored 20 points and Jonquel Jones added 18 for the Liberty, who were nearing the end of the easy win when Clark left the game and Aliyah Boston departed a few minutes later after an awkward fall that injured her left ankle.

Clark shot 1 for 10 and had five assists. The No. 1 pick in the draft played the first few minutes of the fourth quarter before exiting, holding her left ear for a little bit as she left the court. She hurt it while getting bumped on a screen. Clark went to the locker room with Boston for a few minutes, but returned to the bench for the final 2 1/2 minutes of the game.

Clark was fine afterward.

Indiana coach Christie Sides didn’t have an update on the extent of Boston’s injury, but last season’s Rookie of the Year seemed to be OK walking around in front of the locker room.

The Fever have had a brutal stretch to the start the season with 11 games in the first 20 days, including playing New York three times now.

“Their legs were shot. I mean, that’s where everything stems from, your legs, when you shoot the basketball — especially for 3s,” Sides said. “They’re shot, they’re gassed, so everything was a little short.”

Indiana was playing the second game of a back-to-back set. The Fever (2-9) beat Chicago on Saturday afternoon by one point .

The Liberty took advantage of the tired Fever, racing out to a 31-13 lead after one quarter. Laney-Hamilton and Breanna Stewart each had seven points in the opening 10 minutes as New York pushed the pace.

Clark was scoreless in the first quarter before starting off the second period with a logo 3-pointer. She was constantly hounded defensively by Laney-Hamilton and Kayla Thornton.

New York led 55-37 at the break. Indiana got within 12 early in the third quarter before the Liberty blew open the game.

Kelsey Mitchell scored 21 points to lead Indiana.

BRINGING IN FANS

Clark has been a huge draw at home and on the road this season. New York had 17,401 fans in attendance for the game.

UNSELFISH PLAY

All five Liberty starters had at least four assists as the team combined to have 30.

Fever: Indiana finally gets time to rest as its next game is Friday in Washington.

Liberty: New York travels to Chicago for a rematch against the Sky, who handed the team its first loss of the season.

Gagarin cup (khl) finals:  atlant moscow oblast vs. salavat yulaev ufa.

Much like the Elitserien Finals, we have a bit of an offense vs. defense match-up in this league Final.  While Ufa let their star top line of Alexander Radulov, Patrick Thoresen and Igor Grigorenko loose on the KHL's Western Conference, Mytischi played a more conservative style, relying on veterans such as former NHLers Jan Bulis, Oleg Petrov, and Jaroslav Obsut.  Just reaching the Finals is a testament to Atlant's disciplined style of play, as they had to knock off much more high profile teams from Yaroslavl and St. Petersburg to do so.  But while they did finish 8th in the league in points, they haven't seen the likes of Ufa, who finished 2nd.

This series will be a challenge for the underdog, because unlike some of the other KHL teams, Ufa's top players are generally younger and in their prime.  Only Proshkin amongst regular blueliners is over 30, with the work being shared by Kirill Koltsov (28), Andrei Kuteikin (26), Miroslav Blatak (28), Maxim Kondratiev (28) and Dmitri Kalinin (30).  Oleg Tverdovsky hasn't played a lot in the playoffs to date.  Up front, while led by a fairly young top line (24-27), Ufa does have a lot of veterans in support roles:  Vyacheslav Kozlov , Viktor Kozlov , Vladimir Antipov, Sergei Zinovyev and Petr Schastlivy are all over 30.  In fact, the names of all their forwards are familiar to international and NHL fans:  Robert Nilsson , Alexander Svitov, Oleg Saprykin and Jakub Klepis round out the group, all former NHL players.

For Atlant, their veteran roster, with only one of their top six D under the age of 30 (and no top forwards under 30, either), this might be their one shot at a championship.  The team has never won either a Russian Superleague title or the Gagarin Cup, and for players like former NHLer Oleg Petrov, this is probably the last shot at the KHL's top prize.  The team got three extra days rest by winning their Conference Final in six games, and they probably needed to use it.  Atlant does have younger regulars on their roster, but they generally only play a few shifts per game, if that.

The low event style of game for Atlant probably suits them well, but I don't know how they can manage to keep up against Ufa's speed, skill, and depth.  There is no advantage to be seen in goal, with Erik Ersberg and Konstantin Barulin posting almost identical numbers, and even in terms of recent playoff experience Ufa has them beat.  Luckily for Atlant, Ufa isn't that far away from the Moscow region, so travel shouldn't play a major role.

I'm predicting that Ufa, winners of the last Superleague title back in 2008, will become the second team to win the Gagarin Cup, and will prevail in five games.  They have a seriously well built team that would honestly compete in the NHL.  They represent the potential of the league, while Atlant represents closer to the reality, as a team full of players who played themselves out of the NHL.

  • Atlant @ Ufa, Friday Apr 8 (3:00 PM CET/10:00 PM EST)
  • Atlant @ Ufa, Sunday Apr 10 (1:00 PM CET/8:00 AM EST)
  • Ufa @ Atlant, Tuesday Apr 12 (5:30 PM CET/12:30 PM EST)
  • Ufa @ Atlant, Thursday Apr 14 (5:30 PM CET/12:30 PM EST)

Games 5-7 are as yet unscheduled, but every second day is the KHL standard, so expect Game 5 to be on Saturday, like an early start.

Caitlin Clark scores career-high 30 points, but Fever lose to LA Sparks, fall to 1-7

INDIANAPOLIS – The Indiana Fever and Los Angeles Sparks met for the second time in five days Tuesday evening, as the Fever returned home after a three-game road trip out West. While Indiana entered the contest with just one win this season compared to its six losses, that sole victory had come against Los Angeles.

The Sparks entered the game with a 1-4 record, and they improved that by earning a measure of revenge against the Fever with a 88-82 victory .

More: Caitlin Clark, Aliyah Boston, Christie Sides vent frustration after another loss

More: Opponents guard Caitlin Clark between free throws. She still scored 30 points.

As Indiana fell to 1-7 on the season, here’s how the energetic contest featuring three of the WNBA’s most promising rookies went down.

Caitlin Clark vs. Aari McDonald: Things get chippy early, stay physical throughout

Although the reasoning was unclear, Caitlin Clark received a technical foul with 2.7 seconds remaining in the first quarter. It must have been a verbal offense, because Sparks guard Aari McDonald appeared to get in her face to retort after the foul, in between her two free throws.

However, McDonald may have just been returning to her defensive assignment, not realizing she had another free throw to shoot.

Early in the second quarter, McDonald earned a flagrant foul on a 3-point attempt from Clark. Clark hit two free throws, then a 3-pointer about a minute later to put the game at a 24-20 deficit still in Los Angeles’ favor.

Clark ended the first half with 14 points, her most in a single half during her brief WNBA career. McDonald finished the first 20 minutes of play with nine points.

The future of the Fever – Clark and Aliyah Boston – set the tone to start the second half, scoring seven of the first nine points of the third quarter to put Indiana ahead 41-37. During this stretch, the 2023 WNBA Rookie of the Year hit her first 3-pointer of the 2024 campaign.

McDonald, now guarding Erica Wheeler, hit consecutive 3-pointers during an 11-0 run in the middle of the third quarter. This run put Los Angeles back in front 59-55, and McDonald continued to be vocal toward her opponents.

As the fourth quarter went on, every time Indiana cut the deficit to one point, the Sparks responded with a successful 3-pointer. Los Angeles finished the contest 14-of-23 from 3-point land.

With 2:02 remaining, Clark set a new WNBA career-high in scoring with a free throw to bring her total to 23. When all was said and done, Clark finished with 30 points while McDonald scored a season-best 21 points for the Sparks.

By the time the contest came to a close, there were 46 combined personal fouls, 10 more than the 36 committed in the first meeting between the two squads.

Stops, steals and deflections

About two hours prior to tip-off, Fever coach Christie Sides said the key to defeating the Sparks on May 24 was their defense. In the contest at Crypto.com Arena, the Fever forced 18 turnovers compared to the Sparks only drawing 10 out of Indiana.

In particular, Sides thought the Fever came out of the locker room in the second half with an especially keen focus on defense, citing an improved sense of urgency.

“We’ve got to let our defense give us some offense,” Sides said. “We’ve gotta get stops and we’ve gotta get steals and we’ve gotta get deflections.”

Through the first seven games of the season, the Fever had averaged 15.9 turnovers per game compared to forcing 12.7 per game. In fact, transition defense is what Sides said will bring success to the rest of the Fever’s season.

At the end of the first quarter, the Fever had forced six turnovers while the Sparks had forced four. However, each squad earned four points off those turnovers.

On the first possession of the second quarter, Los Angeles fired back by forcing a turnover but failed to capitalize on the offensive end. At halftime, the Fever had forced 11 turnovers and scored 10 of their 32 points off them.

During their two practice days in between their most recent May 25 contest against the Las Vegas Aces, Sides said Indiana was able to focus more on adding more to its defense schematically.

“We've played the most games, the most games on the road, (had) the least amount of rest, so we're trying to grind it out and figure it out as we go,” Sides said.

Things only continued looking up for Indiana in the second half, as the Fever forced five more turnovers to bring their total to 16. At the same time, there seemed to be an effort to get Kelsey Mitchell more involved in the offense, as she put up 10 in the third quarter, bringing her total to 15 points.

By the time the buzzer sounded, the Fever may have lost, but they proved Sides right on the defensive end, forcing 19 total turnovers which led to 24 points off those turnovers.

Previous struggles in the paint show signs of improvement

Sides said another key to future victories for the Fever should come with an improved emphasis on rebounds, especially limiting their opponents’ offensive boards.

Through the first six games of the season, Indiana had averaged 33.1 rebounds per game and 8.3 offensive rebounds as compared to its opponents’ averages of 35.3 and 9.7, respectively.

At the end of the first quarter, Indiana may have been outrebounded nine to eight, but the Fever had four offensive rebounds in comparison to the Sparks’ one. Clark, Temi Fagbenle and Kristy Wallace all finished the quarter with two rebounds, one of Fagbenle’s being on the offensive glass.

“Temi is a fighter, man,” Sides said before the game. “She’s a competitor.”

However, the Fever were at a disadvantage heading into the second quarter, as Boston already recorded two fouls, picking up another before halftime. Fagbenle grabbed one more rebound in the second quarter, and the Fever obtained seven others as the Sparks snatched nine more. Clark led Indiana with five first half rebounds, while Dearica Hamby ignited the Sparks’ charge with eight boards.

The Fever changed the first half trends in the third quarter, scoring 14 points in the paint during this 10-minute stretch. This put Indiana ahead of Los Angeles in this category 20-18.

The Fever also closed the rebounding gap, only trailing the Sparks 25-24 heading into the final quarter. Indiana, at this point, had seven offensive boards compared to Los Angeles’ four.

In what looked to be a potential turning point early in the fourth quarter, Boston grabbed an offensive rebound after a missed layup from Clark, putting the ball back up for an and-one layup, converting the free throw as the crowd erupted.

The Fever were only losing by one at this point, but the Sparks’ Rae Burrell responded with a 3-pointer on the next possession. About a minute later, Boston was charged with her fifth foul after attempting to grab a rebound against Los Angeles’ Li Yueru.

Boston successfully snatched a board on the following possession, hitting Clark in transition for a 3-pointer to put the deficit back at just one point with less than eight minutes remaining.

While the Fever ultimately fell, they showed improvement down low, recording 28 total rebounds and nine offensive boards. As far as points in the paint, Indiana scored 26 while Los Angeles scored 22.

The Fever return to action Thursday, May 30 with a home contest against the Seattle Storm at 7 p.m. When the two squads squared off May 22, Seattle triumphed 85-83.

Nikolas Khamenia, a surging prospect who also picked up his offer from the Tar Heels in May and now boasts a No. 35 composite ranking, is third on the squad in playing time, posting 6.7 points, 7.0 boards, and 3.3 assists in 19.7 minutes per contest.

As for longtime UNC basketball target Jasper Johnson, who visited the Tar Heels in early February and ranks No. 12 among rising high school seniors, he's producing 7.7 points, 3.0 dimes, and 1.3 steals in 14.7 minutes per outing.

How many points did Caitlin Clark score last night? Top pick hits dagger 3 to seal Fever's first win

sports essay points

LOS ANGELES — Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever are finally in the win column.

After opening the season on a five-game losing streak, the Fever knocked off the Los Angeles Sparks 78-73 in a packed Crypto.com Arena on Friday night.

The sellout, record crowd of 19,103 came to see Clark make 3-pointers and score at will, but it wasn’t a typical outing for the top pick in the WNBA draft. Clark went into the fourth quarter with only five points and she'd missed her first seven 3-point attempts.

But Clark still provided a Hollywood ending.

She drilled her first 3-pointer from way downtown with two minutes left in regulation. Then, with the Fever up by two points in the final minute, she knocked down another deep 3-pointer — showing why she is the current star attraction of basketball.

The way the crowd reacted, you’d have thought the Lakers just won another NBA title. Clark just shrugged after the shot that all but wrapped up the victory.

"I was due," Clark said. "Throughout the game I was like 'it was time for them to go in.'"

Clark finished with 11 points on 4-for-14 shooting but she was dishing the ball out with a game-high eight assists and 10 rebounds, marking her first double-double in the WNBA.

While Clark didn't have the best overall shooting night, she certainly got help. Kelsey Mitchell had 18 points, Aliyah Boston had her best game of the season with 17 points and Temi Fagbenle, who is playing in her first WNBA season since 2019, had a career-high 17 points off the bench.

For a majority of the first half, it looked like Los Angeles would run away with a win and Indiana would remain winless. The Sparks had an 11-point lead going into halftime.

But the Fever got more aggressive defensively and it changed the tide. The visiting team started the third quarter on an 11-0 run to tie it and limited Los Angeles to just 11 points in the frame. In the second half, Indiana outscored Los Angeles 44-28.

It was fitting Clark came up big in the clutch given she was playing in the longtime home of one of her idols who was known for doing the same: Kobe Bryant. She wore one of her favorite shoes in the Kobe 5 Bruce Lee colorway, and before the game, she talked about how much of an honor it was to play in a building "with so much history." She said she'd never forget her first game here.

It will be tough to forget her late heroics.

"That's just the mentality you have to have as a competitor," Clark said. "It's just like, you want those moments, you have to embrace those moments when your team needs a big shot."

Celebrities show up for Caitlin Clark in LA

The stars were out to see Clark and company at Crypto.com Arena, including two who celebrated with her after the win. Iowa alumnus Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis sat courtside with their children. After Clark nailed her first 3-pointer, she gave a high-five to Kutcher, and after the game, she met with the whole family. One of their children had tears coming down their face after meeting Clark.

"He was encouraging me the whole game, so it was fun to have him courtside," Clark said of Kutcher.

Actor and well-known Clark fan Jason Sudeikis was also in attendance, along with Klay Thompson, Cheryl Miller, DeMar DeRozan, Tobin Heath and Christen Press.

Hamas is using people of Gaza as human shields. You can't avoid that fact. | Letters

I have two issues with the op-ed in the Ideas Lab of May 19 (“ Student protesters won’t be silent about genocide unfolding in Gaza ”).

For starters, I should state that I believe there should be an immediate cease fire in Gaza and that the continued loss of civilian life only harms the long-term efforts for peace and stability. I also support the right to peaceful protest , but if protests turn into racist confrontations, it is counterproductive. Violence and inflammatory rhetoric are never the answers.

However, the first issue is that she wrote that Israel is populated by “European ‘settlers.’” But nearly a million Jews fled or were expelled by Muslim countries and settled in Israel. There are also Muslim and Christian citizens of Israel.

The second is she avoids dealing with Hamas, which started this current conflict and is using the population of Gaza as human shields. Having traveled to the Middle East, I believe there is much to make amends for. I do believe that Israel as a nation should have done more to try to find lasting solutions, but Islamic terrorist groups have made that more difficult.

Both sides in this conflict need to come together and create a state for the Palestinians and use the resources being used for war to bring some measure of social justice.

Ketanji Brown Jackson Points to a Way Forward for the Court

A black-and-white photo showing the Supreme Court building in the background and a silhouette of a person with a hat in the foreground.

By Linda Greenhouse

Ms. Greenhouse, the recipient of a 1998 Pulitzer Prize, reported on the Supreme Court for The Times from 1978 to 2008 and was a contributing Opinion writer from 2009 to 2021.

The Supreme Court’s recent rescue of an important federal agency from the hands of a hostile lower court was an exercise in the evolving definition of originalism.

Justice Clarence Thomas, writing for all seven members of a surprisingly lopsided majority, excavated precedents deep in the country’s colonial history for the funding mechanism that Congress chose for the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. A mechanism that the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit deemed unconstitutional was clearly known to and accepted by the Constitution’s framers, Justice Thomas concluded.

Justice Elena Kagan wrote a concurring opinion to say that while the old history was enlightening and adequate to support the agency’s constitutionality, modern practice supported it as well. “All the flexibility and diversity evident in the founding period,” she wrote, has “continued unabated” when it comes to financing government operations.

Notably, two of the court’s conservatives, Justices Brett Kavanaugh and Amy Coney Barrett, in addition to Justice Sonia Sotomayor, joined Justice Kagan’s endorsement of the significance of later, even contemporary, practice when interpreting the Constitution. A true “originalist” would reject such evidence as irrelevant, insisting that all that matters is what the framers did and how people at the time understood their actions. (The two dissenters were Justices Samuel Alito and Neil Gorsuch.)

It was a fascinating development, highly significant if it turns out to mean that the pure originalism invented in conservative think tanks during the 1970s and embraced by judges like Robert Bork and Antonin Scalia is no longer the only interpretive game that a conservative judge can play. The originalist theme was the focus of much of the commentary on the decision, Consumer Financial Protection Bureau v. Community Financial Services Association of America.

However, it is another opinion in the case, one that did not deal with originalism at all, that interests me the most. It was by the court’s junior justice, Ketanji Brown Jackson, and it is a mere five paragraphs long.

A bit of background is necessary in order to understand Justice Jackson’s move. While most federal agencies rely on an annual appropriation, Congress set up the C.F.P.B. differently in order to insulate it from political pressure. Up to a specified cap, the bureau draws its spending money directly from the Federal Reserve system without relying on Congress to grant an annual budget request. In the Fifth Circuit decision that the Supreme Court overturned, a panel of three Trump-appointed judges declared that the Constitution’s Appropriations Clause didn’t permit Congress “to cede its power of the purse” in this way. According to the panel, the bureau’s funding mechanism violated the constitutional separation of powers.

Rejecting this analysis, Justice Thomas wrote that the country’s “pre-founding history supports the conclusion that an identified source and purpose are all that is required for a valid appropriation.” He noted that “under the Appropriations Clause, an appropriation is simply a law that authorizes expenditures from a specified source of public money for designated purposes.”

According to Justice Jackson, that simple definition sufficed to resolve the case. “In my view, nothing more is needed,” she wrote. She then turned to the deeper question of whether federal courts should even involve themselves in disputes of this kind, writing that “an essential aspect of the Constitution’s endurance is that it empowers the political branches to address new challenges by enacting new laws and policies — without undue interference by courts.”

The separation of powers argument actually cuts in the opposite direction, Justice Jackson continued. The trade groups representing payday lenders that challenged the bureau’s constitutionality “would have us undercut the considered judgments of a coordinate branch about how to respond to a pressing national concern.”

Her short opinion is worthy of more attention than it has received. What Justice Jackson is calling for, as a liberal, is what conservatives once said they wanted: judicial restraint. The case is one of several challenges to the modern operation of government that the justices will decide before the end of the current term. One such case asks the court to repudiate a 40-year-old doctrine known as Chevron deference , which requires judges to defer to an administrative agency’s policy choices as long as the choice is plausibly within the boundaries of the agency’s statutory authority. Chevron deference is basically a policy of judicial restraint, even of judicial humility. Even though the doctrine was once embraced by conservatives on and off the court, incumbent conservative justices are impatient for its demise, eager to untie judges’ hands to confront the administrative state.

In her opinion, Justice Jackson quoted from a 90-year-old decision, Nebbia v. New York , upholding a New York law that regulated minimum retail prices for milk. The majority opinion by Justice Owen Roberts was an encomium to judicial modesty. “With the wisdom of the policy adopted, with the adequacy or practicability of the law enacted to forward it, the courts are both incompetent and unauthorized to deal,” he wrote in the passage Justice Jackson quoted. The vote was 5 to 4, with the outcome in favor of economic regulation anomalous for a conservative court that would soon be at war with regulatory aspects of President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s New Deal.

There are many more familiar expressions of judicial restraint that Justice Jackson might have selected. Without presuming to know why she chose this one, I like to think she shares my concern about the collapse of the settlement that emerged from the struggle between Roosevelt and the Supreme Court. The justices, having stared down the president’s “court-packing” plan and newly amenable to upholding New Deal legislation, made a bargain with the American people. It went something like this: We will back off from second-guessing the choices the political branches make about the country’s basic economic arrangements, and we will reserve our strictest judicial scrutiny for legislation that impinges on the welfare of members of “discrete and insular minorities,” to quote a famous footnote in a 1938 decision, United States v. Carolene Products Company .

That approach, having held for half a century, yielded to political reality as courts filled up with anti-regulatory judges and as a societal consensus over which group constitutes a minority in need of special judicial protection evaporated. Is that group defined as straight, white Christian men? Some people, even some justices, may think so.

While concurring with Justice Thomas’s majority opinion, Justice Jackson wrote only for herself. I understand why: Judicial restraint was not a subject the other members of the majority were drawn to at this time. But I take her opinion, modest in its brevity and measured in its tone, as a call to think deeply not only about the lessons of the past but also about the needs of the present.
