‘Good morning to everyone present her. Today, I stand before you to present my speech on environmental awareness. Environment refers to the world around us. If we have to keep ourselves safe, we must keep our environment safe. Therefore, environmental awareness is an important topic and we must take our decision in the right direction.

Overpopulation, degradation of the natural environment, pollution of rivers and water bodies, deforestation, etc. are major factors affecting our natural environment. Nature is paying the price of careless human activities. 

From individuals to large organizations,  everyone must work hand in hand to enact and enforce policies that prioritize environmental sustainability. Using public transport can help reduce air pollution. Using the blue dustbin for dry waste and the green dustbin for wet waste can help in waste management. Avoiding single-use plastics, switching off appliances when not in use, using renewable energy like solar and wind energy, and planting more trees can greatly improve environmental health.’

‘So let’s take care of our mother nature and work on a greener, healthier, and sustainable environment because our environment’s health is our health.’

‘Good morning my teacher and my friends. Today, I stand before you to present my speech on environmental awareness. We only have one home; our environment. Yet, we are damaging it at an alarming rate. According to a report released by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), 881 animal species have gone extinct since 1900.’

‘Environment awareness is important because it helps us understand the current state of the environment, including the causes and consequences of environmental problems, is fundamental to environmental awareness.’ 

‘The environment is losing its natural strength. The average surface temperature is rising, trees are cut down, animal habitats are lost, and smoke is released into the air and water bodies. Our environment has gifted us with everything we needed; food, clothes, shelter, etc. Yet, today, we are the biggest threat to the natural environment. It is all because of our careless attitude towards Mother Nature.’ 

‘Taking care of our natural environment is our primary responsibility. Small steps like banning single-use plastics, switching off-lights appliances when not in use, closing water taps, etc. Also, adopting sustainable practices in daily life, such as reducing waste, conserving energy, using eco-friendly products, and supporting environmentally friendly initiatives can significantly improve environmental health.’

In 2019, the government of India banned single-use plastics like polyethylene bags and plastic bottles. Experts suggest that instead of using plastic bags, we can look for alternatives and eco-friendly options like paper bags or jute bags. 

‘In the end, I would like to conclude by saying that adapting to environmentally friendly activities should be our top-most priority. By polluting the air that we breathe, water that we drink, and food that we eat, we are not only damaging the environment but our health too.’

Pollution from these sources can cause air, land, and water pollution.

This releases pollutants such as carbon dioxide and other gasses into the atmosphere. These pollutants may lead to the development of respiratory diseases and cognitive illnesses. Particulate matter pollution is a growing concern in many cities since it causes severe damage to the lining of the respiratory tract.

Land pollution is caused by the disposal of waste products on land. This can include garbage, chemicals, and other materials that can contaminate the soil. It can also lead to the destruction of natural habitats, which can drastically reduce biodiversity. Soil pollution leads to the loss of minerals from the soil and an increase in toxic elements such as chromium, cadmium, zinc, arsenic, etc.

Water pollution is caused by the release of chemicals and other pollutants in water sources. This can include things like sewage, fertilizers, and other industrial waste. It can also lead to the destruction of aquatic life and the contamination of drinking water

Pollution is a major environmental issue that has been affecting our planet for decades. It refers to the presence of harmful substances in the air, water, and soil that can cause harm to living organisms and their habitats. The sources of pollution can be both natural and man-made. Water Pollution | Water pollution is another major issue, caused by the discharge of toxic chemicals, sewage, and other waste into our waterways. This not only affects the water quality and its ability to support life, but can also contaminate the soil and affect crops. In addition, toxic chemicals can enter the food chain and harm animals and humans who consume contaminated fish and other seafood.

Soil Pollution | Soil pollution is another form of environmental degradation that can have significant impacts on the health of our planet. This can occur through the use of toxic chemicals in agriculture and industry, as well as through the improper disposal of waste. Soil pollution can lead to reduced crop yields and soil fertility, as well as cause harm to wildlife and contribute to groundwater contamination.

What Can We Do | In order to reduce the effects of pollution, it is necessary for individuals, businesses, and governments to take action. This can include reducing the use of harmful chemicals, improving waste management practices, and promoting the use of renewable energy sources. In addition, individuals can reduce their own carbon footprint by conserving energy, reducing waste, and using public transportation.

In conclusion, pollution is a serious issue that affects the health of our planet and its inhabitants. It is important for all of us to take action to reduce its impacts and protect the environment for future generations. Whether it is through reducing our own carbon footprint or advocating for changes in policy, every individual has a role to play in the fight against pollution.

Flint Water Crisis

A real-life incident of pollution occurred in Flint, Michigan in 2014, when the city switched its water source from Lake Huron to the Flint River. The river water was not properly treated and as a result, lead contamination was found in the city's drinking water. The lead contamination caused serious health problems for the residents, including developmental delays in children and increased rates of lead poisoning.

The incident brought attention to the issue of water pollution and the importance of proper treatment and testing of drinking water. The government was criticized for not taking action to address the problem quickly enough and for not providing adequate resources to the affected residents.

My Greetings to everybody present over here and thanks for giving your precious time. Today I would like to deliver a speech on Air Pollution which has become a major challenge in recent times. In spite of a monologue, I would like it to be a fruitful interaction, hence your views are welcome. Air pollution means mixing of external hazardous gases and particulate matter in the air, which ultimately route inside our body through inhalation. These gradually lead to respiratory disorders and hence affect the health of human beings. Hence nowadays air pollution is becoming a major concern for humanity.

Causes of Air Pollution

There could be various causes of air pollution in today’s world. The world is developing at the cost of the environment. Today’s society in view of modernization is neglecting the mother nature and thereby adopting the lifestyle which ultimately cost us on our health.

The number of vehicles on road has increased tremendously in the past few decades, hence the emission level has also gone up. This can be very well seen by an increase in ppm-level. The severe pollution level in Delhi is an alarming situation for all of us.

Also, the smoke coming out of factories or the poisonous gases coming out of chemical factories are polluting the air. We have seen one major tragedy of air pollution in the form of Bhopal Gas Tragedy. The increase in usage of Air conditioners in homes is also a cause of air pollution.

Effect of Air Pollution

Also, the different dangerous gases or smoke, when enters the pregnant ladies, cause the unborn child to come in contact with it before taking the birth. These children tend to have a high possibility of respiratory diseases as compared to other children.

The decrease in trees and plants leads to an imbalance in nature. It causes Global warming and depletion of the Ozone layer. Global warming leads to an imbalance of the natural cycle and hence de freezing of polar ice, which is again a foreseen danger. The depletion of the ozone layer allows the infrared rays to enter our atmosphere, thereby causing skin diseases.

The air pollution is affecting the animals as well. It causes acid rains which leads to the death of a lot of animals and marine creatures. Increasing allergic patients nowadays are due to air pollution only. Asthma is affecting the people of all age groups starting from 0 years of age.

Nature is an asset given to us. It has given life to living beings. And to pass on this asset to our offsprings as it is, we need to take good care of it. If we need our future generations to grow up in a healthy environment, then we need to take the steps now.

We need to stop cutting the trees for the sake of the construction of residential colonies or factories. We need to adopt public transports for long distances and bicycles for shorter distances, so as to reduce the smoke and emissions and thereby reducing air pollution. Mother Nature needs to be taken care of well for the flourishing of our upcoming generations. Let’s take a pledge now to respect and protect our environment.

Lastly, we have the issue of wasting water. Water is precious. We need it to drink, to cook, to wash, and to grow our food. But when we leave taps running or use too much water in unnecessary ways, we waste it. It’s like throwing away a precious gift.

So, what can we do? We can stop feeding the pollution monster by recycling and using less harmful products. We can plant more trees and take care of the ones we have. And, we can save water by using it wisely.

A warm welcome to one & all present here. Today we are here to discuss the very burning topic of the decade that is pollution. According to a report by the World Health Organization, eleven out of twelve cities with the highest levels of particulate pollution are located in India. A study says 86% of the Indian water bodies are deemed critically polluted. Land pollution has resulted in a loss of around 25 billion tons of valuable soil each year.

As per the Global Burden of Disease Report by the World Health Organization, the prevalence of hearing loss was estimated to be 6.3% in India due to noise pollution. These are the few reports which have become often in today’s media & still we are not serious about the problem. Air Pollution in India has become a severe problem. As per a study, at least 140 million people in India breathe air that is ten times over the safe limit.

57% of the total air pollution are by the industries, 27% by vehicles, 17% by crop burning & around 5% by Diwali fireworks. India, as a country, is the third-largest greenhouse gas producer after China and the United States. There is a decrease in the Air Quality Index of all the major cities of the country. All these have resulted in an increase in several airborne diseases & the premature deaths in India.

Now the second type of pollution which has impacted is water pollution. The largest source of water pollution is untreated sewage. Other factors include agricultural runoff & unregulated small scale industries, solid wastes etc. These factors have resulted in contamination of both surface water & groundwater. Lack of toilets & defecation is also adding to the cause. Many rivers water has been declared unfit for domestic use due to high pollution with organic matter.

Not only humans but also the life in water is getting adversely affected by this.Now let us briefly discuss the land degradation. Soil Contamination or land pollution is caused by xenobiotic chemicals or other alteration in the natural soil. It is due to the intensive farming, deforestation, improper disposal of wastes & industrial activities. Except for these few major pollution’s, there are several other types of pollution’s like noise pollution, light pollution, plastic pollution which has been ignored since long.

Pollution cannot be seen or felt, but its effects are evident on the earth & the biodiversity. Global warming, increase in sea level, extinction of species, scarcity of drinking water, decrease in air quality, acid rain etc. are few major impacts which are posing a threat to the existence of human life on earth. To sum it up, all types of pollution’s are detrimental to the planet & comes with terrible consequences.

All of us must take steps to bring the changes in industries to the individual level. A joint effort by the government & the citizens will curb the situation from getting worse. So let us make a stand for our mother earth & listen to its pains to save it from the upcoming global calamity.

Noise pollution has affected both behaviour & health of humans. Not only the humans but pollution has given a significant threat to the flora & fauna on the earth too.

Pollution has also led to many more serious problems like global warming , melting of polar ice, ozone layer depletion, and climatic disturbances on a global level. The reasons are many & all of us need to acknowledge that we have created a threat to life on earth. The consequences of pollution are hazardous. We must become more alert & proactive towards the situation & make every effort to turn the situation another way around.

All of us must pledge to bring a better tomorrow for the World. With an urge for everyone to give their best in the joint effort to eliminate pollution, I would like to end my speech.

We all have to come together to cure the problem of pollution. Let’s take a pledge to help the environment by reducing pollution.

If we talk about the major causes of pollution. They are burning fossil fuel, burning firecrackers, and deforestation, Industrialisation is the next cause on the list after human activities. Smoke, carbon dioxide, sulphur dioxide, ammonia, and particulate matter produced by industries cause air pollution.

Industrial waste products and chemical-based elements are being released into nature without any legit treatment. And chemical wastes released in the water and rivers cause water pollution. Apart from this, Industries also produce excessive noise pollution in the environment.

With the development of lifestyle, urbanisation is growing rapidly. This growth is causing the exploitation of natural resources like wood, soil and water.  Deforestation  is the result of urbanisation and growing air pollution.

There are also some natural causes of pollution that we do not have control over. but they are harming the environment critically. Some of these are volcanic eruptions, global warming, natural calamities etc.

I want to share with you some simple practices to help the environment.

• Plant more trees
• Use fuel-based vehicles as little as possible

Environmental Pollution

Worthy Principal, teachers and dear students. Today I stand before you to speak on pollution. Environmental pollution is one of the major and serious problems that is being faced by developing countries. The ecological balance of the earth is being threatened by it. Air and water are polluted by the toxic constituents. Noise pollution has destroyed the calm and serenity of our surroundings.

The main sources of pollution are the increasing vehicular traffic and garbage. The petrol or diesel being used in the vehicles emits toxic smoke which contains lethal gases like carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxide. All those inhaling these gases contract deadly diseases. These are like bronchitis, asthma and other breathing problems. The accumulating garbage emits the foul smell. It is the birthplace of many contagious diseases. Various leather and chemical industries pollute both the air and the water by belching out poisonous smoke and effluents in watercourses.

The increasing feeling of trees, building of darns and upcoming of congested localities has played havoc with the dean environment. Human life is in real danger. We need to plant more trees at every possible patch of land. I understand that there is also a need of shifting industries and mills established in congested colonies to safer places. To control traffic carpools must be made so that the emission level from them is contained within prescribed levels.

Variety of hazardous and toxic substances from different sources are getting intermingled into the environment and causing various types of pollution such as water, air, soil or land, noise, and thermal pollution.

Smokes and toxic dust from the industries and factories get mixed to the air and causes air pollution. Such polluted air is very bad for the lungs when we breathed air in. Sewage and other wastes from the industries and factories have their ways directly to the large water bodies (river, lakes, seas, etc) and they get mixed properly to the drinking water causes water pollution. Such polluted water (containing germs, bacteria, toxic substances, viruses, etc) is very bad to the health of human beings, animals and plants (whoever drinks this water).

Now-a-days, environment is not peaceful because of the increasing noise level through the transport, sound systems, electronic devices, etc. Such voices are causing noise pollution and very bad to the natural stamina of our ears. Excess and unbearable noise of vehicles, loud speakers, etc can cause ear problems and even permanent deafness especially in older people and kids.

Man-made chemicals from the industries and factories such as hydrocarbons, solvents, heavy metals, etc get mixed into the soil when people use herbicides, pesticides, fertilizers, etc or through the spill or underground leakage of the chemicals. Such contaminants in the form of solid, liquid or gas are causing soil or land pollution which is contaminating the whole earth. Such contaminants are also causing water and air pollution as they get mixed to the underneath water supplies and some chemicals produce harmful vapors respectively.

Ever increasing the use of plastic by the people is causing huge level environmental pollution and adversely affecting the wildlife, wildlife habitat, and humans. Thermal pollution is increasing because of the huge level usage of water as a coolant by the power plants and industrial manufacturers. It is causing the change in temperature of water in the large water bodies. It is very harmful to the aquatic animals and plants as raised temperature of water decreases the oxygen level of water.

My dear friends, we have been surrounded by the thick cover of the pollution from all around means upside, downside, and both sides. We are living in pollution but the most surprising thing is that some people even do not aware of it. Big and developed countries are highly responsible to this increased level of pollution all around the world. This is the very challenging issue of this planet which needs to be solved on urgent basis. It cannot be solved by the effort one or two countries, however; it can only be solved if all the countries do hard and strict effort from various aspects regarding this issue.

Various countries have adopted some effective laws on pollution reduction however that are not enough to defeat this powerful demon. This needs conjoint governmental actions of all the countries to completely eliminate it. High level awareness should be spread to the common people to get their needed effort. Each and every person of the country should be aware and watchful of this problem, its causes, and harmful effects to the living beings. Use of harmful and toxic chemicals by the people, industries and factories should be banned very strictly by the government. Common people should be made aware by the educational institutions and government agencies through camps or other means to use environment friendly things and habits to save the environment and keep it healthy.

As we have gathered here to celebrate this event, I have selected this special topic to open in front of you in the favor of humanity. My dear friends, as we all are well aware of the word pollution. I want to tell you that pollution is a slow and sweet poison which is disturbing us and our living very badly in all the aspects such as physically, mentally, socially, and intellectually. It is not so easy to stop it at once however, not so tough to prevent it gradually.

The main causes of the pollution are wastes from the chemical industries and factories pouring their wastes directly into the large water bodies. Such contaminants gets introduced into the natural environment and causing adverse change. Pollution can be man-made or natural however pollution from the natural sources is less harming than the man-made. Pollutants or components of the pollution get intermingled into the natural resources such as water, air, soil, etc. Pollution was started from the prehistoric times however currently it has been boom because of the deforestation, urbanization, technological advancement, and advanced life style.

People should understand the importance of environment they live in and respect the one given by God to live a simple life on the earth (the only known planet having life). Various types of pollution such as water pollution, soil or land pollution, air pollution, and sound or noise pollution, all are very harmful to the health of human beings and animals. People have been used to of technological advancement in their lives and forgot about all the existing problems because of that. Use of various fertilizers and other chemicals in the agriculture for many years in order to get better and healthy crops has created serious problem to the humanity.

Increasing number of vehicles in the cities is another main cause of air pollution. Diesel vehicles are more dangerous than the petrol vehicles as they emit more carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide, both are very harmful to the health and atmosphere. My dear friends, it is very necessary for the common public to be aware of the bad effects of pollution and run in the direction against pollution to reduce its effects. We should plant more green plants in the surrounding areas and sides of the roads in order to maintain the natural equilibrium in the environment.

Pollution is affecting our lives so we have to take individual steps and do every possible things what we can do. We should not depend only on our government actions for some positive changes. Common people like us are the main factor to stop the spread of pollution.

Good morning to the respected sir, madam and my friends. At this event, I would like to speech on pollution, the most serious issue of the modern time. The most powerful demon in the form of environmental pollution has disordered the ecological balance of the atmosphere. It is a big global issue however varies in its nature and extent with regional variations. It is the topic of anxiety and debate to solve this issue. It is not the time to accuse one another however it is the time to fight this demon together with some effective weapons. Rich, powerful and developed countries are highly responsible for such a huge spread of pollution and global warming however all countries are bearing this problem.

We have been the victim of this environmental pollution however we cannot deny that this problem is created by us. It is we who have given rise to this problem due to increased irregular consumption level of natural resources and living patterns of the modern time. Pollution is the result of fast urbanization, deforestation, industrialization, technologies and unmanageable wastes from industries and factories. It is getting boom because of the high consumption level of fertilizers in agriculture, emissions from chimneys, smoke from motor vehicles, etc.

Increased number of vehicles has increased the consumption level of fuels which is causing the air pollution to a great extent. Over population is another big issue of this ever increasing pollution. It has created the need of more houses, cutting of plants to make living places, and other modern needs of the people is leading to the pollution. No one is thinking about this issue but everyone is busy in money making and collecting things of physical comfort. Because of overpopulation the consumption of fresh water, consumption of wood, etc has increased. Increasing human needs of physical comfort (such as AC, TV, electricity, electronic devices, fertilizers, freeze, washing machine, etc) is directly related to the spread of pollution.

Now, we lack the fresh air to breathe, fresh water to drink, fresh land to get healthy crops, and peaceful environment to sleep. We are bearing all that because of our negligence and carelessness. We have to work hard continuously to get natural fresh environment to get real physical and mental comfort. We have to get control over this demon and save life here by planting more trees, well managing wastes from industries and factories, reducing need of heavy vehicles, and other effective steps.

Good morning to all. At this event celebration, I am going to recite a speech on pollution. My dear friends, pollution is not an unknown word for us. We are well aware of it, its causes and bad effects on the environment and our lives. A natural environmental contains everything required for the survival, growth, and development of the living beings on earth. However, what happened if this environment gets polluted by various means. Everything will get disturb and interfere with the survival of life here.

Pollution has happened because of the mixing of dangerous unnatural ingredients into the natural resources which causes imbalance in the ecosystem and thus various health hazards to the human beings and animals. Pollution is damaging the ecosystem and destroying the balance. This is all because of the industrialization, urbanization, deforestation, technological advancement, over population, etc. All these are the big reason of increasing level of toxic gases (causing air pollution), solids/liquids wastes (causing water, food and soil pollution) and sound (causing noise pollution). All are the reason of imbalance in the natural ecosystem in some direct or indirect ways.

It has been the matter of great concern and consideration and need to solve. Because of the pollution, babies are born with variety of birth defects and life expectancy of people has been low because of the lethal diseases like cancer, diabetes, heart problem, etc. I want to share you some facts about pollution: According to the WHO, around 6.7% percent of all deaths and 7 million premature deaths worldwide are due to the air pollution. Mississippi River carries around 1.5 million metric tons of nitrogen pollution. Pollution caused by China may change United States weather patterns. Approximately, 56% trash of United States has covered landfills (half of that is only paper).

The most damaging pollutant causing global environmental pollution is fossil fuel. It has created various evil effects especially through air, water and soil. Protecting our environment and improving its natural value is the fundamental duty of all of us. We should try our best to tackle this problem and give a nice healthy future to our next generation.

Evan Ramstad exhibits a disturbing confusion between "environment" and "climate" ( "Human progress is not the enemy of the planet," July 7). Yes, environmental pollution is disruptive to human health, but a changing climate driven by human-caused global warming is pushing the planet to be unlivable, and it's getting worse.

Reducing environmental pollution (improving air and water quality) does not, in itself, reduce global warming. Fortunately, switching to carbon-free renewable energy (energy sources that are replenished daily by the sun, like solar, wind and hydro, for example) for our transportation, buildings and industrial needs directly reduces climate pollution and reduces environmental pollution.

Ramstad asserts that Minnesotans "enjoy one of the cleanest environments in the world." But Minnesota is sorely falling short in its effort to remove carbon pollution from electricity production by 2040, as required by Minnesota state law. The good news is that clean electricity will stimulate the economy that Ramstad seems to hold as his top priority.

Ramstad's weekly column in the Sunday business section always interests me. His June 30 column had me thinking about economists' focus on growing our economy ( "Growth is a hot topic for readers" ). As a retiree who depends on Social Security and investments to make ends meet each month and have enough money for life, I tend to consider economic growth good for me personally. However, I also want to pass on a habitable planet to my great-grandsons. Is aggressive economic and population growth compatible with sustainability? I truly wonder about that.

Economist E.F. Schumacher wrote a book first published in 1973 called "Small is Beautiful: Economics as if People Mattered." In his book, he quotes Gandhi: "Earth provides enough to satisfy every man's need, but not for every man's greed." Schumacher goes on to suggest that "what were luxuries for our fathers have become necessities for us" and "the cultivation and expansion of needs is the antithesis of wisdom. It is also the antithesis of freedom and peace." Later, he writes, "Economically, our wrong living consists primarily in systematically cultivating greed and envy and thus building up a vast array of totally unwarrantable wants."

Instead of encouraging population and economic growth, maybe economists ought to consider ways to construct an economic system that distributes wealth equitably and values people more than consumption. Schumacher died in 1977, but the wisdom of his words lives on 50 years later. I invite readers (and economists) to find and read Schumacher's book, which offers sane alternatives to our current path.

ENVIRONMENT

We're saving us, not the planet.

I was transfixed and, at the same time, moved while reading Peter M. Leschak's essay about humans' ability and need to "save the planet" ( "Gaia's woodpile," Opinion Exchange, July 7).

His essay is beautifully written and a highly enjoyable read. But I found it to also be a highly spiritual reflection on our role within the context of "nature" on this planet. Humans? Deer mice? No difference. The biosphere/Gaia doesn't see a difference. Gaia will survive whatever we do to her. The ones who may not survive for long are us, if we allow our own extinction to come about. It's our choice. Thank you to Leschak for a new take on an old problem. As he rightly points out, we can't and don't need to "save" the planet. We should be more focused on our own survival on this planet. Our survival is in no way guaranteed, and pretty much relies on our own actions toward Gaia, the "source."

I appreciated Sunday's commentary "Gaia's woodpile" and would add that the key word here is "sustainability." What is or is not a sustainable lifestyle for humans can be debated endlessly, but perhaps those who don't get it will rethink environmental reality when climate change causes more and more storm damage to the point where it is hard or impossible to get home insurance because insurance companies cannot cover that much loss ( "Homeowners insurance erodes," editorial, July 10). Or when crop failures become more frequent due to extremes in flood and drought conditions and even farmers have a hard time collecting on any sort of crop insurance, and we see grocery prices rise higher and higher as a result. These are just two examples of what might register with those who, for now, only care about how cheap gasoline is at the pump.

IMMIGRATION

This chaos must end.

Simon Adams says that "asylum-seekers are not illegal" ( "Southern border is a humanitarian catastrophe," July 6). It is true that requesting asylum is not an illegal act, but many asylum-seekers are entering the U.S. illegally before requesting asylum instead of doing so at a port of entry. Unfortunately, the vast majority of immigrants are entering the U.S. illegally. Between February 2021 and October 2023, there were 6.5 million encounters with immigrants at the U.S.-Mexico border. 5.8 million of those immigrants were apprehended between ports of entry. In other words, they attempted to enter the U.S. illegally. About 75% of asylum-seekers entered the U.S. illegally. And only about 15% of those who initially claim asylum are eventually granted it (based on 2019 figures from the Department of Justice's Executive Office for Immigration Review), which indicates that most asylum-seekers are not truly refugees but are seeking to move to a better country. That is a valid goal, but they need to pursue it legally, not by coming here illegally and claiming asylum when they do not meet the criteria for asylum.

I agree with Adams that the U.S. needs to fix the border crisis. The first step is to reduce the flow of people entering the country illegally so applications to enter the country can be processed in an orderly way.

There's an unfortunate reality here

The article " Feral cats and the fix too far" in the Star Tribune on July 6 reports that because of rising costs, the Animal Humane Society is charging $75 to sterilize all cats considered unadoptable before releasing them to the neighborhoods where they were caught, under their "community cat" TNR (trap, neuter, release) program. Other rescue organizations are facing similar financial issues, especially since the number of stray or abandoned cats has skyrocketed in recent years as people can't afford them or don't want them post-pandemic, when many were adopted.

Many shelters across the U.S. are full to capacity with people surrendering cats and dogs because of care costs and housing restrictions and are unable to take in more animals. So some people are simply letting their cats go free to fend for themselves. This is a tragedy indeed, meaning more animal suffering, a slow death for cats, more decimation of wildlife and public health risk from several diseases cats can carry.

Charging people who bring in cats they have saved from the outdoors is likely to backfire, becoming a financial deterrent for would-be animal rescuers when the word gets out that rescuing animals comes with a price. This is a sad reflection of the rising costs of operating animal shelters, which all communities should support.

Aside from the problem of rising inflation, there is the pro-life ideology of "no-kill" shelters, which does not face the reality and necessity of having to euthanize otherwise healthy animals when there are too many for which to find responsible owners.

How might the Melbourne factory fire affect health and the environment? An air pollution expert explains

A very large factory fire in Melbourne sent plumes of thick, dark smoke billowing across the western part of the city on Wednesday afternoon, with authorities issuing warnings for people in surrounding suburbs. The fire has now been brought under control , but efforts to control the impacts will likely continue for days.

It has been reported the fire, which Fire Rescue Victoria said involved a large chemical explosion, was at a site run by the chemical blending corporation ACB Group.

That’s yet to be officially confirmed at the time of writing, but is consistent with the type of fire seen in media footage. ACB Group mixes together a range of different hazardous chemicals for various industries.

We don’t know at this stage exactly what was on site during the fire. But when I looked at a cached version of the ACB Group’s website on Wednesday afternoon, I could see they handle common flammable compounds such as fuels, corrosive substances, chemicals supplied to the automotive industry and various solvents and thinners. These chemicals are typically highly flammable.

The issue is that when you have so many liquids like these stored together, once a fire starts and you get an explosion, it will continue to grow and burn very intensely.

People reported seeing barrels exploding and launching themselves into the air, which makes it particularly hard to battle the fire.

In a fire with so much fuel, not enough air is available to completely burn those chemicals. This results in the plumes of thick, black, billowing smoke seen here.

Why is smoke from a fire like this a problem?

The first thing to remember is that all smoke is harmful. Typically, if you can smell smoke, it’s at a level where it could be impacting your health.

It’s not so much a function of what produced the smoke from Wednesday’s fire; it’s just there was so much of it and it was so concentrated.

Smoke contains ultrafine particles known as PM2.5 (PM stands for “particulate matter”). There might be other vapours in there specific to the fuel source – but even in the absence of those, smoke has particulate matter in it and that is harmful to health, no matter the chemical composition.

I looked at PM2.5 levels across Melbourne and at the start of Wednesday they were very low. But PM2.5 levels did spike in the west of Melbourne in the afternoon, reaching levels of concern.

Fortunately they have since come back down, but may increase again on Wednesday night as mixing slows down in the still night air.

If you are especially sensitive to particulate matter – for example, if you have asthma or a respiratory condition – and you ever find yourself close to smoke like this, you could do the following things:

stay indoors or away from affected suburbs

close ventilation openings

close windows and doors

try to isolate yourself in clean air and wait until the air quality has improved outside

wear an N95 or P2 mask if must go outside.

It’s similar to what you would do in cases where bushfire smoke is affecting air quality.

Across broader Melbourne, though, the air quality threat quickly dissipated.

Longer-term effects

The more lingering environmental effect is the threat to waterways. The risk is the water used to put out the fire carrying chemicals, ash and debris from the fire to local waterways, which can cause problems for plants and animals. Authorities would be actively trying to manage that risk.

For humans, incidents such as these can contribute to the burden of air pollution that people in cities deal with over the long term.

This long-term exposure to poor quality air is now known to contribute to many conditions affecting almost every part of our bodies.

Long Speech on Pollution by Plastic Bags

Today, I am here to deliver a speech on plastic pollution. Plastic has very seriously impacted the health and life of human beings in the last decade. Several events have drawn the attention of the whole world and placed a question mark on the use of plastic in everyday life.

Plastic, the wonder material we use for anything that pollutes our atmosphere, is probably the most destructive waste deposited in the sea by sailors and sea-goers because it does not break down easily. The plastic that goes in the river today might still be around to ruin the fishing gear, ship propellers, and beaches for future generations.

Plastic is non-degradable material, it does not completely mix up with the natural elements unlike degradable materials like food, clothes, paper etc Hence, it persists in nature for a longer time than other materials. India generates around 9 million tons of plastic waste annually. It is so sad to know that 40% of the total waste generated is not even collected from the source. Most of the plastic waste generated is single-use plastic which is discarded by people with minimal use of it. 

Plastics can be broadly divided into microplastics and macroplastics. Microplastics are smaller in particle size with less than five millimeters. They include microbeads that are used in making cosmetics, personal hygiene products, industries, and microfibers which are used for sanitation. On the other hand, macroplastics are particles with more than five millimeters. Comparatively, microplastics cause more damage as they are easily transferred from one trophic level to another trophic level.

According to the Central Pollution Control Board in India, we generate around 26,000 tons of all types of plastics every day and half of it is not even collected from the source. They choke the drains, get eaten by animals, enter the water resources and pollute the environment. On average, every Indian consumes 11 kgs of plastic every year. Though it is 10 times less than the USA, as India has more population, we seem to generate a lot of waste comparatively.

Careless plastic handling can have dire repercussions. For an indiscriminate feeder like the sea turtle, a plastic bag seems like a delicious jellyfish, but plastic is indigestible. It can choke, block the intestines of those animals that eat it or cause infection.

A plastic bag can clog the cooling system of an outboard engine as well. Monofilament fishing lines lost or discarded may foul propellers, break oil seals and lower engine units, or may become an enveloping web for fish, seabirds, and marine mammals.

More and more plastic is collected in our oceans every day. Recreational boaters are not the only party to dispose of plastic refuse at sea improperly. Through waste outfalls, merchant shipping, commercial fishing activities, and beachgoers, plastics are also entering the marine environment.

It is very flexible in the middle stage and, depending on temperature and pressure, any shape can be provided. In the practice of plastic waste preparation, urea, formaldehyde, polyethene, polystyrene, polycythylcholide, phenolic compounds and other substances are used.

The most widespread plastic contamination nowadays is caused by polyvinyl chloride (P.V.C.). The soluble chemical is eventually dissolved in them when any food substance or blood is deposited in the aforementioned plastic containers, causing death due to cancer and other skin diseases.

We have been advised that citizens should simply recycle the billions of tons of output from plastic companies and that it will make the required difference to sustain our world.

There is no recycling of over 90 percent of plastics. Recycling alone will simply never solve this problem. A radical change in how they deliver goods to people must be faced with the size of the problem companies have developed. It is up to all of us to demand more, to tell these industrial companies that the plastics they impose on us will no longer be accepted. Our planet deserves better and if they fail to adapt, we don't need their goods.

For a lifetime, nothing that is used for a few minutes should end up polluting our oceans. It's time for us to denounce the old corporate story that we are content with a throw-away lifestyle and build a better future.

Chancellor Rachel Reeves is taking immediate action to fix the foundations of our economy

In her first speech as Chancellor, Rachel Reeves laid out plans to rebuild Britain and make every part of the country better off.

Good morning.

Last week, the British people voted for change.

And over the last 72 hours I have begun the work necessary to deliver on that mandate.

Our manifesto was clear:

Sustained economic growth is the only route to the improved prosperity that country needs and the living standards of working people.

Where previous governments have been unwilling to take the difficult decisions to deliver growth…

… or have waited too long to act…

… I will not hesitate.

Growth [political content removed]. It is now our national mission.

There is no time to waste.

This morning I want to outline the first steps [political content removed] taken to fix the foundations of our economy.

So we can rebuild Britain and make every part of our country better off.

But first, let me address the inheritance.

I have repeatedly warned that whoever won the general election would inherit the worst set of circumstances since the Second World War.

What I have seen in the past 72 hours has only confirmed that.

Our economy has been held back by decisions deferred and decisions ducked.

Political self-interest put ahead of the national interest.

A government that put party first, country second.

We face the legacy of fourteen years of chaos and economic irresponsibility.  

That is why over the weekend I instructed Treasury officials to provide an assessment of the state of our spending inheritance so that I can understand the scale of the challenge. And I will present this to Parliament before the summer recess. 

This will be separate from a Budget that will be held later this year – and I will confirm the date of that Budget, alongside a forecast from the Office for Budget Responsibility, in due course.

All governments face difficult choices – and I will not shrink from those choices.

Those choices are made harder, however, by the absence of the economic growth necessary to not only balance the books but also to improve living standards.

New Treasury analysis that I requested over the weekend shows that, had the UK economy grown at the average rate of other OECD economies this last 13 years, our economy would have been over £140 billion larger.

This could have brought in an additional £58 billion in tax revenues in the last year alone. That’s money that could have revitalised our schools, our hospitals, and other public services.

Growth requires difficult choices – choices that previous governments have shied away from.

And it now falls to [political content removed] fix the foundations.

We have promised a new approach to growth – one fit for a changed world.

That approach will rest on three pillars – stability, investment, and reform.

Let me turn first to stability.

In the run-up to the general election, I set out the crucial first steps in our economic plans:

To deliver economic stability, so we can grow our economy and keep taxes, inflation and mortgages as low as possible.

And that commitment stands.

I emphasised this commitment in a meeting with the Governor of the Bank of England on Friday, and I will do the same when I meet the chair of the Office for Budget Responsibility this week.

These institutions are guarantors of our economic stability and I will not be playing games at their expense.

Over the weekend I made clear to Treasury officials that the manifesto commitments that we were elected on will be kept to and they will be delivered on.

That includes robust fiscal rules.

And it includes our commitments to no increases in National Insurance, and the basic, higher, or additional rates of Income Tax, or VAT.

Now I know there are some who will argue that the time for caution is past.

That a large majority in Parliament means we have the licence to row back on the principles of sound money and economic responsibility.

I know that many of you aren’t used to hearing this after recent years. But I believe that the promises that a party is elected on should be delivered on in government and we will do so.

We do not take lightly the trust of voters who have been burned too often by incompetence, irresponsibility, and recklessness.

And to investors and businesses who have spent fourteen years doubting whether Britain is a safe place to invest, then let me tell you:

After fourteen years, Britain has a stable government. A government that respects business, wants to partner with business, and is open for business.

In an uncertain world, Britain is a place to do business.

Let me turn to how we will unlock private investment that we so desperately need.

[Political content removed] …plans to launch a new National Wealth Fund, with a remit to invest – and so to catalyse private sector investment – in new and growing industries.

And in March, the former governor of the Bank of England, Mark Carney, agreed to lead a Taskforce on the establishment of a new National Wealth Fund.

I can tell you today that I have received the report from that Taskforce, and I will be announcing the next steps in short order.

Alongside investment must come reform.

Because the question is not whether we want growth, but how strong is our resolve – how prepared are we to make hard choices and face down the vested interests;

How willing, even, to risk short-term political pain to fix Britain’s foundations.

The story of the last fourteen years has been a refusal to confront the tough and responsible decisions that are demanded.

This government will be different.

And there is no time to waste.

Nowhere is decisive reform needed more urgently than in the case of our planning system.

Planning reform has become a byword for political timidity in the face of vested interests and a graveyard of economic ambition.

Our antiquated planning system leaves too many important projects getting tied up in years and years of red tape before shovels ever get into the ground.

We promised to put planning reform at the centre of our political argument – and we did.

We said we would grasp the nettle of planning reform – and we are doing so.

Today I can tell you that work is underway.

Over the weekend, I met with the Prime Minister and the Deputy Prime Minister to agree the urgent action needed to fix our planning system.

Today, alongside the Deputy Prime Minister, I am taking immediate action to deliver this [political content removed] government’s mission to kickstart economic growth;

And to take the urgent steps necessary to build the infrastructure that we need, including one and a half million homes over the next five years.

The system needs a new signal. This is that signal.

First, we will reform the National Planning Policy Framework, consulting on a new growth-focused approach to the planning system before the end of the month, including restoring mandatory housing targets.

And, as of today, we are ending the absurd ban on new onshore wind in England. We will also go further and consult on bringing onshore wind back into the Nationally Significant Infrastructure Projects regime, meaning decisions on large developments will be taken nationally not locally.

Second, we will give priority to energy projects in the system to ensure they make swift progress…

… and we will build on the spatial plan for Energy by expanding this to other infrastructure sectors.  

Third, we will create a new taskforce to accelerate stalled housing sites in our country…

…beginning with Liverpool Central Docks, Worcester Parkway, Northstowe and Langley Sutton Coldfield, representing more than 14,000 homes.

Fourth, we will also support local authorities with 300 additional planning officers across the country.

Fifth, if we are to put growth at the centre of our planning system, that means changes not only to the system itself, but to the way that ministers use our powers for direct intervention.

The Deputy Prime Minister has said that when she intervenes in the economic planning system, the benefit of development will be a central consideration and that she will not hesitate to review an application where the potential gain for the regional and national economies warrant it.

… and I welcome her decision to recover two planning appeals already, for data centres in Buckinghamshire and in Hertfordshire.

To facilitate this new approach, the Deputy Prime Minister will also write to local mayors and the Office for Investment to ensure that any investment opportunity with important planning considerations that comes across their desks is brought to her attention and also to mine.

The Deputy Prime Minister will also write to Local Planning Authorities alongside the National Planning Policy Framework consultation, making clear what will now be expected of them…

…including universal coverage of local plans, and reviews of greenbelt boundaries. These will prioritise Brownfield and grey belt land for development to meet housing targets where needed.

And our golden rules will make sure the development this frees up will allow us to deliver thousands of the affordable homes too, including more for social rent.

Sixth, as well as unlocking new housing, we will also reform the planning system to deliver the infrastructure that our country needs.

Together, [political content removed] we will ask the Secretaries of State for Transport and Energy Security and Net Zero to prioritise decisions on infrastructure projects that have been sitting unresolved for far too long.

And finally, we will set out new policy intentions for critical infrastructure in the coming months, ahead of updating relevant National Policy Statements within the year.

I know that there will be opposition to this.

I’m not naïve to that;

And we must acknowledge that trade offs always exist: any development may have environmental consequences, place pressure on services, and rouse voices of local opposition.

But we will not succumb to a status quo which responds to the existence of trade-offs by always saying no, and relegates the national interest below other priorities.

We will make those tough decisions, to realise that mandate. 

Be in no doubt – we are going to get Britain building again.

We are going to get Britain’s economy growing again.

We will end the prevarication and make the necessary choices to fix the foundations:

We will introduce a modern industrial strategy, to create good work and drive investment in all of our communities.

We will reform our skills system, for a changing world of work.

We will tackle economic inactivity and get people back to work.

We will take on the hard work of reforming our public services, to make them fit for the future.

We will work closely with our national, regional and local leaders to power growth in every part of Britain.

And we will turn our attention to the pensions system, to drive investment in homegrown businesses and deliver greater returns to pension savers.

I know the voters’ trust cannot be repaid through slogans or gimmicks – only through action, only through delivery.

The Treasury I lead is proceeding on that basis.

I was appointed to this post less than 72 hours ago.

Upon my arrival, I told Treasury staff that the work starts straight away.

That work has begun.

I have commissioned and received economic analysis from HMT officials on the lost growth of the past 14 years, which I have set out today.

I have instructed Treasury officials to prepare an assessment of the state of our spending inheritance, to be presented to Parliament before the summer recess.

I have started working with the Prime Minister, to make the necessary preparations for the establishment of a Growth Mission Board, and that board will meet before summer recess, focused squarely on reviving our country’s economic growth and prosperity

I have established a new Growth Delivery Unit here, at the heart of  the Treasury.

I have received the recommendations of the National Wealth Fund Taskforce, and will shortly be announcing next steps.

There is much more to do.

More tough decisions to be taken.

The work towards a decade of national renewal has begun.

And we are just getting started.
