Applications, phd in the arts, read more about the programme, expert in the arts.

Doctoral research in the arts consists of an artistic and a discursive part and revolves around the student’s artistic or design practice and the research that is conducted through that practice. The particularity of the PhD in the arts lies not in the content of the research question or in the research path as much as in the specific way research questions are developed and studied. It is the artistic practice itself that both generates research questions and serves to evaluate the tentative answers to these questions. That is why it is essential that this research is undertaken by an artist who excels in his or her discipline: the visual arts, music, audio-visual arts or drama.

Progression of your PhD

As a PhD candidate, after an annual call, you submit a project proposal to a committee that evaluates it based on criteria of artistic excellence, research methodology and relevance. If you are allowed to start, you combine the research activity with a limited doctoral training and can also immediately share expertise and experiences with students in a teaching assignment. Two supervisors will guide you during your research: a supervisor with mainly artistic expertise connected to KASK & Conservatorium and a supervisor with theoretical expertise connected to Ghent University. At the end of your six years of doctoral research, as researcher you will present the results, consisting of artistic work and a discursive part, for defence before a jury of experts from the academic and artistic field.

Personal Genomics is now becoming a reality, thanks to the steadily increasing availability of affordable sequencing technology. Despite the great promise of genomics for personal health and precision medicine, most institutions, as well as individuals, are hesitant to share genomic data. Principal reasons are the risk of unethical handling of the data, for example leading to higher insurance costs at the level of individuals. Hence, the build-up of trust for sharing this highly sensitive, identifiable personal information is critical, individually, nation-wide, and internationally.

3. Fully Funded PhD Position in Chemistry

Recently, hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites (HOIPs) have received significant research attention mainly because of their use as active layer in perovskite solar cells (PSC). HOIPs can be prepared spanning the whole range of dimensionalities: 3D, 2D, 1D and 0D. This results in a class of hybrid materials with highly tunable compositions, structures and properties. After the rise of the 3D HOIPS for use in PSCs, the lower-dimensional 2D hybrids are currently receiving increased attention. These 2D HOIPs consist of an organic layer, sandwiched between inorganic layers (templates), which relates to their generally enhanced material stability compared to the 3D HOIPs and on the other hand to their much higher degree of compositional flexibility.

9. fully funded phd position in chemical engineering.

We are looking for a PhD student for a research project on textile modelling. In this project, the main purpose is to develop a multi-scale textile modelling framework that allows accurate simulation of textile manufacturing processes such as yarn unwinding from a bobbin, weft insertion during weaving, stitching and tufting. This framework is implemented using finite element modelling as well as virtual fibre modelling. Big challenges here are the high anisotropy, low bending stiffness and non-linear behaviour of most textile materials, as well as the dynamics of manufacturing systems as most production happens at very high speeds.

13. fully funded phd position in information processing.

Recent evolutions in wireless networks have complexified the interactions, due to the deployment of Internet of Things (and the corresponding increase in the number of devices), and the deployment of ever more complex services offered at a cellular level (the so-called fog computing paradigm). These new trends have as a consequence that traditional performance evaluation techniques (which subsume either a static topology of the network or else a clearly identifiable bottleneck) are no longer adequate. In this project, we will investigate more advanced techniques based on complex network theory and random graph theory in order to bridge this gap. We thus aim to find a more fleshed-out view of the intersection of these two crucial parts of modern performance evaluation.

In the PASTIME project, we will search for methodologies to study the kinetics of drug transport. Since experiments often are too expensive or lack sufficient detail, molecular simulations can give insight in the dynamics of drug binding to proteins, or the permeation kinetics of those drug molecules through membranes. While such computational methodologies exist, new fundamental developments are needed to understand the ‘time’ aspects and to make the computations feasible with present-day computer power.

16. fully funded phd position in plant.

Plant tissue culture and regeneration is used to propagate selected plant material, to create transgenic crops, to preserve species and varieties, and to rescue or select unique genotypes for breeding. While this method works well from some crops, many plant species and varieties are rather difficult to regenerate. Researchers vary the media composition and hormones to obtain a successful protocol. However, environmental factors such as temperature are also important. In recent years it has been shown that high temperature conditions can improve the efficiency of plant regeneration.

23. fully funded phd position in plants and crops.

Plants sense the presence of nutrients in the environment through their roots. Phosphate is one of the essential nutrients for plant development, but its application in agriculture depends on strict regulation (European Green Deal and the derived national/local legislation). Moreover, the resource rock phosphate is limited and the options to return to a circular phosphate usage in agriculture have to be investigated. Especially for an essential nutrient such as phosphate deficits and excess result in architectural adaptations of the plants to meet the needs, usage, and growth with the environmental supplies. Whereas the root adaptation phenotypes are known, the early priming responses resulting in this architectural adaptation are not well studied.

26. Fully Funded PhD Position in Plants and Crops

Heat waves have become a common occurrence that is seriously affecting the production of seeds and fruits, and in general agricultural productivity. Even very short periods of high temperatures during sexual reproduction have already a devastating impact. Why in particular the process of meiosis and gamete development are highly sensitive to heat is an important unanswered question in plant biology. Horticell investigates the underlying molecular processes that are the cause for heat inflicted loss of fertility, and in this context, we identified several genetic factors involved.

Inside graduate hotels: how ben weprin's vision transformed university town hospitality.

At a time when most hotel chains blur into indistinguishable beige sameness, Graduate Hotels offers a much-needed reprieve—a vibrant, living scrapbook of local lore and university charm slowly but surely leaving its mark on the hospitality industry.

Although Graduate Hotels have been around for a decade, there are only 34 properties globally, from the Ivy League charm of Princeton to the academic epicenters of Cambridge and Oxford in the UK. That in and of itself is a testament to the brand’s commitment to authenticity: a slow, deliberate expansion that values community engagement. As if to say, it’s not just about where you stay, but how you feel while you’re there—and hopefully long after you’ve left.

Graduate Knoxville.

The brainchild of Ben Weprin , founder of AJ Capital Partners, Graduate Hotels began as a bold experiment in transforming university towns’ often dreary accommodations. Weprin’s eureka moment happened in 2010 when he saw potential in the then-bland hotel landscape of these academic hubs. His first venture, renovating Chicago’s Hotel Lincoln near DePaul University, was a revelation. The uninspired decor and sterile ambiance were soon replaced by vibrant local references that turned the hotel into a love letter to the community. The hotel’s eventual success inspired Weprin to replicate his concept, giving birth to the Graduate Hotels brand in 2014.

What sets the brand apart is its meticulous attention to detail, tongue-in-cheek aesthetic, and unwavering commitment to capturing the essence of each location. This isn’t your grandmother’s bed and breakfast adorned with random antiques—each Graduate is more like a carefully curated tapestry woven with threads of local history, alumni memories, and university traditions.

“We dedicate an enormous amount of time and energy to connecting with alumni and community members before, during, and after the design process to get the inside scoop on the university traditions, lesser-known stories, and hidden gems that make our spaces so special,” Weprin explains. The goal? To ensure each guest leaves feeling like they’ve just been given an insider tour of the town’s best-kept secrets.

Fed Chair Powell Issues ‘Critical’ Warning, Sparking Sudden $60,000 Bitcoin Price And Crypto Crash

Bookmakers put their money on kamala harris as biden’s odds tank in betting markets, apple to upgrade iphone 16 design in important way, new leak claims.

Graduate Auburn, AL.

You might think with all this local flavor, the brand would risk falling into the trap of being another kitschy, themed hotel. Weprin is quick to distinguish: “There’s an authentic human element to the brand. Each property can stand alone, yet you can almost immediately recognize the brand when you walk into our spaces.”

This is no small feat. Imagine walking into a hotel and feeling the immediate, comforting sense of familiarity while also being struck by the unique, site-specific details that tell the story of that particular place. Take, for instance, the Graduate Eugene , where Weprin’s sneakerhead enthusiasm manifests in a vintage Nike sneaker collection, including the holy grail of kicks: an original pair of Nike Moon Shoes. Or the Jordan suite at Graduate Chapel Hill , a meticulously recreated dorm room of Michael Jordan, complete with his game-worn sneakers and a $5 check he cashed after winning a game of pool. Or even the 13-punting boat installation at Graduate Cambridge.

Graduate's pair of Nike Moon Shoes.

The brand’s dedication to historic preservation is evident in projects like the upcoming Graduate Princeton , which involved the sensitive renovation of a 1918 dormitory building. Weprin describes the project with the kind of pride usually reserved for a firstborn child. The challenge was maintaining the building’s historic charm while modernizing it for today’s guests. This delicate dance between old and new is a signature of the Graduate design ethos, ensuring each property retains its unique character while offering contemporary comforts.

As the brand continues to explore new markets and expansion opportunities, its goal remains the same: to offer guests an authentic and immersive experience that feels like a secret handshake with the local community. “If guests walk away feeling more connected to the community or like they learned something during their stay, then we’ve done our job,” Weprin says.

We spoke with Weprin below to learn more about the Graduate brand and the crucial role design and community-building play in each Graduate property.

Graduate New York

What sets Graduate apart—design-wise—from other boutique hospitality brands?

You can’t just pick up a Graduate and place it in any market. Each property is designed to tell the story of its community through thoughtful design and hyperlocal programming while serving as the backdrop for some of life’s most memorable moments.

We dedicate an enormous amount of time and energy to connecting with alumni and community members before, during, and after the design process to get the inside scoop on the university traditions, lesser-known stories, and hidden gems that make our spaces so special. If guests walk away feeling more connected to the community or like they learned something during their stay, then we’ve done our job.

Graduate Hotels is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year. Looking back, what do you think was the pivotal moment or decision that set the course for the brand's success in the competitive hospitality landscape?

In 2010, we started to notice a gap in the hospitality space. At the time, university markets were overlooked. They were filled with bland accommodations primarily serving as a place to sleep.

The unofficial precursor to Graduate was Chicago's Hotel Lincoln, a former Days Inn near DePaul University. We bought the asset in 2010 and renovated and repositioned it towards the DePaul community. By incorporating local references throughout the space, like nods to Frank Baum and Abraham Lincoln's bodyguard, John Parker, we created a visceral connection with the community. The success of this project inspired us to replicate the concept in other markets, ultimately shaping the Graduate brand we know today.

Graduate Chapel Hill

It’s hard to stand out in the hospitality industry. In your opinion, what is the most distinguishing feature of Graduate Hotels that sets it apart from other hotel brands? More importantly, how do you avoid falling into the trap of "theme hotel" clichés?

There’s an authentic human element to the brand. I would argue while Graduate hotels don’t necessarily fall into the “themed” hotel brand category... each property can stand alone, yet you can almost immediately recognize the brand when you walk into our spaces and know you’re in a Graduate. There are certain staples in each hotel, like the brand motto, “We Are All Students” and the signature study tables that sit in each lobby. There are definitely some thematic elements, but each hotel has its own story to tell.

When Graduate was born in 2014, no other national hotel brand catered specifically to college towns or university markets. Some of the properties are in “true college towns,” meaning there is no big airport nearby. If you’re going out of your way to visit a university in a small town, Graduate offers an authentic taste of local community and school traditions without walking outside. It’s a community-first approach. In that same vein, the incredible design team at AJ takes the time to sit down with alumni and local community members to learn what's important to them, what those cherished traditions are, and what frequently stories are told that only locals would know about. It's a memory or a feeling that guests can experience, either for the first time or all over again.

Each Graduate Hotel is deeply entwined with its location's university culture and spirit. Can you share a bit about the research and creative process that goes into capturing the essence of each town and its university for a new hotel?

We celebrate the people and narratives that define each Graduate community, and in Auburn, that conversation begins and ends with Bo Jackson. Bo Jackson’s Beans—a coffee shop and bar that honors Bo’s contributions to the sports world—will open with the hotel this fall. Bo embodies the spirit of hard work, passion, and the pursuit of dreams that we hold close. It's a privilege to collaborate with him in the city where his extraordinary career began in 1982.

Graduate Cambridge

The design of Graduate Hotels blends academic charm with local flair. What's your personal favorite design element or artifact that you've incorporated into one of the hotels, and what's the story behind it?

Over the years, I’ve had several favorite pieces and elements as we’ve grown the brand. One of my favorites is the vintage Nike sneaker collection at Graduate Eugene—I’m a big sneakerhead. We had the incredible opportunity to curate the 40-pair collection, including an original pair of Nike Moon Shoes. There’s also Flyboy at Graduate New York, the Minnie Pearl Tapestry in Nashville, and a 13-punting boat installation at Graduate Cambridge.

We’ve also created curated experiences within the guest rooms. At Graduate Chapel Hill, we recreated the college dorm of my favorite sports hero of all time, Michael Jordan. Fittingly labeled room 23, the room is the exact replica of his dorm at Granville Towers. From the ceiling to the brick wall to the record player and records, the posters, the pennants–every single piece in that room, we have it. The Jordan suite also has some of my favorite MJ memorabilia, including his game-worn sneakers from 1983, a $5 check he cashed after winning a game of pool, and his student ID card.

Can you share a story about the most unexpected or challenging design request you've received for a Graduate Hotel? How did you creatively navigate it?

Every hotel has had its challenges, but the most rewarding, I would say, would be those that have a historic restoration component, which is AJ’s bread and butter. Graduate Princeton was a unique challenge, given that part of our approach was to restore and renovate a former student dormitory building from 1918. Our main goal was to ensure the building's historic character and integrity were preserved while also adapting it to meet the needs of a modern hospitality space. This required careful consideration of architectural details and sensitivity to materials, such as creating a design for the brick exterior of the new construction building that would complement that of the existing structure while still preserving its charm. Structurally, we had to get creative, as the building's original floor plate was not big enough to accommodate the size of a standard hotel room; so, we had to re-configure much of the existing structure to convert it into a modern, top-tier hotel successfully.

Graduate Nashville

Are there any subtle design details or easter eggs within Graduate Hotels that guests might miss on their first visit? Can you share a favorite example?

Absolutely. One of my favorite examples is in our guest rooms at Graduate Princeton, where you’ll find custom bedside table lamps inspired by the Revolutionary War-era cannons buried behind Nassau Hall. Stories like these, incorporated tastefully into the design, are an important aspect of each property. Subtle yet meaningful design details are scattered throughout all Graduate Hotels, with the intention of keeping our guests curious and connected to the surrounding community and history.

The upcoming launch in Princeton, NJ, marks the 34th property in the Graduate Hotels portfolio. Without giving away too much, can you tease any unique design elements or experiences guests can look forward to at this location?

The lobby of Graduate Princeton is one of the spaces I am most excited about. Guests will be greeted by a two-story library lounge with thousands of books and a collection of vintage Senior Jackets. The space will also feature a thirty-foot carved wooden table, a Graduate staple reminiscent of the historic libraries on campus, which will serve as a public space for visitors and students to study, gather, and connect.

The guest rooms include custom wallpaper inspired by the campus’s renowned arboretum, bespoke bed frames that recall the university's annual Cane Spree tradition, and more. The restaurant, Ye Tavern, is named after a storied bar that once occupied the same site in the 1930s, and the design is inspired by Princeton University’s famed ‘eating clubs.’

The Randolph Hotel, Oxford

Graduate Hotels’ connection to university towns is unique. How do you ensure that each hotel remains appealing not just to visiting parents and alumni but also to a broader demographic seeking a one-of-a-kind hotel experience?

Celebrating each of these markets and communities is a real honor, and we take it seriously. When it came to my own alma mater—the University of Tennessee—it was especially meaningful. At Graduate Knoxville, we partnered with Peyton Manning, a living legend and local hero, to create Saloon 16. Peyton's nickname was The Sheriff, and his number was 16, so we told his story through a recreation of an old-school saloon with Peyton's fingerprints on every aspect of the space.

He's one of the most detail-oriented people I've ever worked with. He's so meticulous. He picked and named every item on the menu, chose every song on the jukebox, and even pulled from his personal collection to help us curate every picture on the wall. If Peyton were to build a saloon in his basement, this is exactly what it would look like.

Delving into the realm of hypotheticals for a moment, if you could design a Graduate Hotel inspired by any university or college in the world that you haven't already explored, which would it be and why?

The first international Graduate opened in 2021 in Cambridge and Oxford, England, two of the world's most historic and iconic university towns. I’d love to see the brand expand internationally and explore what a Graduate is across different university cultures. Here in the U.S., we are always exploring potential markets and have a few that are constantly requested by our brand fans.

Does Graduate Hotels collaborate with local artists and designers to integrate their perspectives into its design narrative? If so, have there been any particularly unique or surprising collaborations?

We've partnered with several artists across our portfolio, but one of the most notable collaborations is at Graduate New York with Hebru Brantley. Upon entering, guests are greeted by a striking 12-foot sculpture, a vibrant reinterpretation of Brantley's iconic Flyboy character, which symbolizes empowerment through knowledge. This colorful Flyboy fills the space with wonder and delight.

And finally, for a bit of fun: If you could choose any fictional university from movies, books, or video games to inspire a Graduate Hotel design, which would it be, and what element would you be most excited to bring to life?

We’ve played with pop culture in a few of our properties—beyond the standard design details—like the Home Alone Suite in Evanston and the Stranger Things Suite in Bloomington, but we’ve only scratched the surface. We’re all about nostalgia, so it would have to be a throwback—I’d love to create an homage to a collegiate comedy classics like Old School or Animal House .

Former student heads to prison for life for killing University of Arizona professor

phd university ghent

PHOENIX − A former University of Arizona graduate student was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for the murder of a professor on campus in 2022 .

Murad Dervish , 48, was found guilty of first-degree murder after he shot Thomas Meixner, head of the university's Department of Hydrology and Atmospheric Sciences, on Oct. 5, 2022. The sentence he received Monday will put him behind bars for the rest of his natural life, plus 14 years, with no parole.

Last month, a jury also found him guilty of a slew of other charges , including one count of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, one count of burglary and three counts of endangerment. Dervish was a graduate student who was expelled and prohibited from being on campus.

He was accused of threatening Meixner and other faculty and university staff for more than a year.

Dervish's attorney wanted his client to be found guilty but insane, telling the jury Dervish did not know right from wrong and was psychotic, paranoid and delusional. The prosecutor from the Pima County Attorney’s Office argued the murder was premeditated and showed threatening emails and evidence that Dervish planned to kill Meixner in the weeks and months before the shooting.

Family, university requested life without parole

During the sentencing, Meisner’s sisters, son and wife spoke about their experience, and all requested Dervish be sentenced to life in prison without a chance of parole. They spoke about how kind and intelligent Meixner was and how he was generous with his community.

One of his sons, Sean Meixner, spoke before the sentencing about his grief, sadness and hatred of Dervish, stating his life would never be the same without his father. He spoke about feeling as though he is waiting to die so he can hold his father again and be free of the "agony living in his absence."

“How could a man who devoted his life to God and others be taken from this life in the worst way possible, in pain and fear? Where was God in that?” he said.

Celina Ramirez, representing the university, said Meixner was a passionate, world-renowned scholar and kind mentor whose leadership resulted in the hydrology department’s high ranking.

She said the shooting has hurt the mental health of students and university staff, noting the challenge it is for many students and employees to return to campus.

“No legal punishment could ever be enough to fully atone for the intense grief and pain the defendant has inflicted upon Dr. Meixner's family, friends, colleagues, students, and the university community,” Ramirez said.

But Meixner’s sisters specifically criticized the university, as well as UA police and the person who sold Dervish the gun he used to kill Meixner.

“The University of Arizona failed my brother,” said Margaret Meixner, one of his sisters. "He loved and trusted the U of A, but that trust was misplaced."

She called the university’s police department incompetent and said the police and the university had her “brother’s blood on their hands.”

University police,  according to a letter by university president Robert Robbins , went to the county attorney’s office twice to seek charges against Dervish. The county attorney declined to press charges because of a lack of evidence.

In the months after the shooting, a faculty report found the university knew about the threats and failed to implement an effective risk management system to keep people on campus safe. Another  report , compiled by a consultant hired by the university, offered 33 recommendations for improving security.

Since then, the university has implemented numerous safety changes and updated safety communications. Meixner's family settled a lawsuit against the university for $2.5 million for failing to protect Meixner.

Dervish apologizes to Meixner's family but says trial was unfair

After Meixner’s family members spoke, Dervish addressed the judge over the objection of his attorney.

Dervish said he was pushed to speak because of the repeated mentions of him being a monster. Dervish spoke about how he had been enamored by the weather ever since he was a child and was so happy when he got into the University of Arizona.

“I felt I was in this new and magical place. I was going to study what I always wanted to truly study,” he said, adding that he fought addiction, homelessness and rejection by people in his life.

He said his heart broke for “what happened.”

“For them to lose him is just horrible, to his wife I don’t even know what to say,” Dervish said. “Just saying the word 'sorry' sounds dumb and ugly. It doesn’t fit … with what happened.”

He also said “significant errors” were made during the trial, primarily by his attorneys. He noted the trial was not granted a change of venue and claimed the trial was unfair.

“I have yet to have a fair and impartial trial,” he said.

Pima County Superior Court Judge Howard Fell told him that he would have the opportunity for others to review whether the trial was fair.

“Right now, you are going to prison for the rest of your life,” Fell said.

Dervish threatened, harassed staff before the shooting

The prosecutor said that on the day of the shooting, Dervish entered the Harshbarger Building at UA shortly before 2 p.m. He chased Meixner down a hallway in the building and into a classroom. Dervish emptied his magazine, shooting Meixner 11 times.

Dervish then fled the building, police said. According to the complaint, police found Dervish driving on Highway 85 toward Mexico 30 miles south of Gila Bend three hours later.

Documents say Dervish refused to stop, leading police on a chase for 2 to 3 miles until his car was stopped.

Dervish's behavior was well-known among members of the department and law enforcement before the shooting occurred. In the year before the shooting, Dervish reportedly harassed and threatened staff members working at Harshbarger Building.

Some of the threats were antisemitic: Dervish wished death to all Jews and accused Meixner of orchestrating a Jewish-led conspiracy against him, despite Meixner being raised Roman Catholic.

Dervish's attorney said his anger toward Meixner stemmed from a bad grade on a test.

Before his expulsion from the university, Dervish had been prohibited from stepping foot on university property. Pictures of Dervish were distributed throughout the department with instructions on how and when to call the police.

Additionally, entry passwords for rooms to which Dervish had access were changed.

After the judge handed down the sentence, the Pima County Attorney's Office released a statement saying County Attorney Laura Conover would bring red flag legislation back to the Legislature this year, following the wishes of Meixner's family.

“In honor of the family’s expressed wishes, and under her desire for a safer community, County Attorney Conover will bring her red flag legislation back to the legislature again next year, and for as long as it takes, to bring home common-sense gun safety reforms for a safer and healthier community," her office said in a statement.

Those laws, which have the backing of Democratic Attorney General Kris Mayes, allow courts to order the seizure of firearms from people who might be a threat to themselves or others.

Former Gov. Doug Ducey proposed a similar law, under a different name, in 2018 after 17 students and staff were killed in a shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. But the Republican's bill was rejected by the GOP-majority Legislature.

Elektrostal , city, Moscow oblast (province), western Russia . It lies 36 miles (58 km) east of Moscow city. The name, meaning “electric steel,” derives from the high-quality-steel industry established there soon after the October Revolution in 1917. During World War II , parts of the heavy-machine-building industry were relocated there from Ukraine, and Elektrostal is now a centre for the production of metallurgical equipment. Pop. (2006 est.) 146,189.
