What Are 1-Year PhD Programs Online?

A one-year PhD program is a doctorate you can complete in a very short time and generally requires 30 credits. Though short online PhD programs are called “1-year online doctoral programs”, very few universities offer PhD programs that can be completed in a year.

Most programs take around 15 months or so to complete, though some can last up to two years. Generally, any PhD you can complete in two years or less is considered in this category.

Do All The Shortest PhD Programs Require a Dissertation?

No. Many short Ph.D. programs don’t require a dissertation. However, some of these programs involve a research project parallel to other coursework. This means the project must be completed within the program duration, unlike longer doctorates, where the research component is dedicated years after your coursework.

Why Choose a One-year PhD Program Online?

Many opt to study 1-year PhD programs online because they want to earn their doctorate in a short period and enter the competitive job market earlier. This can save you years, not to mention a significant amount of money. After all, many of us cannot afford to spend 5-7 years getting a PhD while balancing work and personal commitments.

Benefits and Challenges of Short Online Doctoral Programs

The key benefit of short doctoral programs is earning a PhD while saving a considerable amount of time and money . You’ll also be able to enter the job market with your doctoral qualification much earlier.

On the other hand, it can be challenging to complete a doctorate in such a short period , often making your studies rather intense. However, if you’re willing to work hard for these short years, you will be able to enjoy the many benefits of having the letter “PhD” after your name.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the shortest doctoral program online.

You won’t find a doctoral program that can be completed in less than a year. Chatham University’s DNP (Doctor of Nursing Practice) and Breyer State Theology University’s Ethereal Accelerated Doctor of Psychology in Grief Counseling are two of the few, if not only, programs currently available that you can complete within a year. However, you can complete some in a little over a year or two years.

Can you Get a PhD in 1 Year?

Very few universities provide PhD programs that can be completed in exactly one year. Even many programs referred to as “1-year PhDs” actually take a little more to complete and up to two years. However, several doctorates can be completed within a year or two, though not across all disciplines.

What is the Quickest Doctorate Degree to Get?

Chatham University’s DNP (Doctor of Nursing Practice) is probably the quickest PhD you can get today, as you can finish it in 12 months. Breyer State Theology University’s Ethereal Accelerated Doctor of Psychology in Grief Counseling also takes only one year.

How Can an Online Program Help Accelerate the Doctorate-Earning Process?

On-campus programs typically have a rigid structure and fixed program duration, usually meaning you have to complete them within around three and seven years. On the other hand, many online programs give you the flexibility to go at your own pace. This often means that you can choose to accelerate through the courses fast and complete the program in a shorter period of time.

Are Fast Doctorate Programs as Good as Regular Programs?

You can’t make a direct comparison between fast doctoral programs and regular programs. Regular programs go at a slower pace, so you get plenty of time to study, observe, reflect, and experiment with what you’re learning.

On the other hand, fast doctoral programs involve a more intense type of study and, arguably, you need to put in more effort. However, these short programs also allow you to gain a valuable doctorate qualification and take your career to the next level in a comparatively short period of time.

Final Thoughts

Though rapid PhD programs are broadly called one-year programs, not all can be completed within one year. Many universities provide PhD programs that you can complete within two years. The best 1-year PhD programs online are an excellent way to earn a doctoral degree with minimal disruption to your work and personal life.

Best One-Year Online Ph.D. Programs Badge 2024

Best One-Year Online Ph.D. Programs of 2024

Written by Blanca Villagomez

Updated: October 1, 2023

Compare School Options

Most schools have rolling admissions and financial help so you can start your degree in a few weeks!

While the career benefits of earning a Ph.D. are undeniable, the process of getting this degree can be quite time-consuming. The 2021 Survey of Earned Doctorates shows that, depending on which major you select, the average time from graduate school entry to a doctoral degree ranges from six years all the way up to 10. Are you in a position to make that kind of commitment?

However, it is possible to complete a doctorate in a shorter period of time. Choosing one of the Ph.D. programs listed below can speed up the process of earning your doctorate. You can save a significant amount of time and money if you choose one of these programs over another.

How To Earn a Ph.D. in Just One Year

By paying attention to the factors listed below, you may be able to reduce the amount of time it takes to earn your Ph.D. by several semesters. Depending on which field you would like to work in, which school you attend, and your academic background, you may have the opportunity to complete your Ph.D. program in a single year.

Choice of major

If you’re a graduate student or getting close to entering a graduate program, then switching majors would only set you back in terms of how long it takes to earn your Ph.D. But if you’re still in high school or working on the general education portion of an undergraduate program, you should be able to change course now without any consequences.

Liberty University’s selection of online Ph.D. programs shows just how much difference your choice of major can make. The length of these programs ranges from 48 credit hours ( Ph.D. in Public Administration ) to 72 credit hours ( Ph.D. in History ). Twelve credit hours is generally considered a full-time semester. Choosing one major over another would immediately reduce the amount of time it takes to earn your Ph.D. by an entire year. Of course, in addition to how long it takes to earn your degree, we recommend considering all of the other relevant factors (potential income, job demand, personal interests, etc.) before deciding on which major to pursue.

Number of credits required

School selection is also important. The Ph.D. program for a particular major at one college may require more credits than it does at another college. You should thoroughly research schools and consult with advisors to ensure that you fully understand the requirements for each program you’re considering.

For example, while the online Ph.D. in Criminal Justice program at Liberty University requires 60 credit hours, an equivalent program at Texas A&M International University only requires 49 credit hours. In this case, choosing one school over another would save you nearly a semester.

Transfer credits

Another reason school selection is important is that each college has its own set of transfer credit policies. Ideally, you’ll be able to transfer as many credits from your previous degree programs as possible. Not all Ph.D. programs accept transfer credits — once you’ve narrowed your choices down to a handful of options, contact each school’s admissions department to see how many credits you may be able to transfer in.

Dissertation

While most Ph.D. programs require dissertations, this isn’t always the case. Researching and writing a dissertation usually takes at least a year, so finding a program that doesn’t require one can save you a tremendous amount of time.

Keep in mind that even non-dissertation Ph.D. programs will likely still have some original research component. This is yet another factor that varies by school. Make sure you understand exactly what will be required of you before you enroll in any particular program.

How We Rank Schools

This list features some of the country’s best one-year online Ph.D. programs. Each school featured is a nonprofit, accredited institution, either public or private, with a high standard of academic quality for post-secondary institutions.

We evaluated each school’s program on tuition costs, admission, retention and graduation rates, faculty, and reputation. Then, we calculated the Intelligent Score on a scale of 0 to 100. Read more about our ranking methodology.

Next, we compared this comprehensive list of the best one-year online Ph.D. programs to a list of aggregated college rankings from reputable publications, such as U.S. News & World Report, to simplify a student’s college search. We pored through these rankings so students don’t have to.

Should You Earn Your Ph.D. Online?

You may be concerned about whether employers will take a Ph.D. that was earned online seriously. If so, there’s no need to worry. A 2018 Northeastern University study found that 61% of HR leaders believe that online degrees are as good or better than degrees earned in person, and 71% have personally hired someone who earned their degree online.

Rather than whether you earned your degree online or in person, the key to earning a degree that employers will respect is whether your school has the right accreditation. Proper accreditation will indicate that you attended an institution with strong enough academic standards to prepare students for their future careers. Specifically, you should only consider schools approved by at least one CHEA-recognized accrediting organization.

Online Ph.D. programs provide a much more convenient way to earn your doctoral degree. Unless you live within walking distance of your school, an in-person program would require countless trips to and from campus. That would take up a lot of your time, and the cost of gas can also add up to a significant sum. 100% online programs eliminate this need entirely, which is especially helpful for students on a tight budget or with responsibilities outside of school (taking care of kids, working full-time, etc.).

Of course, you may be the type of learner that prefers attending lectures in-person and interacting with your instructors and fellow students face-to-face. But if you don’t mind attending lectures remotely and studying course materials on your own, the advantages of an online Ph.D. program should far outweigh its disadvantages.

Doctorate Degree vs PhD

Ph.D. programs focus more on the theoretical and abstract aspects of their respective fields of study to understand it as a school of thought rather than just a practical application.

Usual doctorate programs tend to be more practical in their study and focus on the application of knowledge rather than understanding more abstract perspectives.

Ph.D. degrees are often offered in the same fields that have standard doctoral degrees available usually offered in fields such as engineering, mathematics, natural sciences, social sciences, and humanities.

Doctorate programs are made up of advanced coursework, research projects, or thesis work almost strictly for practical application. Such degrees will get you ready to teach at the university level or help you advance to the leading edge of your field researching, serving, and creating.

Ph.D. and Doctorate degrees can often achieve the same ends and should be considered more or less equal in weight.

Guide to Online Doctorate Degrees

Fewer positions requiring this advanced level qualification and reduced competition for such job opportunities among job seekers are some of the reasons behind the few doctoral graduates.

With technological advancements in almost all areas of life, acquiring education, a significantly advanced level of education has become more accessible.

Graduate students now do not have to attend physical classes to pursue their dreams of developing and advancing their skills.

You can pursue your doctorate in the comfort of your home or even your office. There was a 20% growth in students granted doctorate degrees between the 2009/2010 and 2019/2020 academic years, according to NCES. This growth has been attributed in part to online Ph.D. programs and the streamlining of modern universities.

Online Ph.D. programs are a relatively newer idea and online schooling in general has greatly increased access, flexibility, and convenience.

Students typically complete these degrees soon after completing a Master’s degree in the same area. As such, and with bachelor's degrees being necessary stepping stones, students can expect their journey from primary school to a Ph.D. to take about nine years, barring any accelerated tracks and failed classes.

Cost of an Online Doctoral Degree Program

When choosing any doctoral degree program, it is crucial to evaluate the costs and salary after attending. Even though online Ph.D. courses may usually be cheaper than on-campus learning, secondary schooling is rarely cheap and not every field will allow you to make back the cost in a reasonable amount of time.

Tuition, materials, technology, transportation, housing, and groceries should all be factors brought into account when deciding whether or where to attend, and in what field you can find the most success and fulfillment.

Below are the annual tuition rates of different institutions as reported by the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES).

  • Private-For profit institutions- $18,200
  • Private-Not for-profit institutions- $37,600
  • Public institutions- $9,400

Choosing an Online Doctoral Degree Program

Since doctoral programs require considerable investments of money and time, it is important to consider every factor before deciding on a school or program. Take some time to consider the marketability, cost, and difficulty of each program and your own interest in the subject. To reach your career and educational goals, do your best research.

An online Ph.D. program or doctorate can offer many compelling features for students, but it might not be the right choice for everyone. Consider the questions below when deciding whether to pursue your doctorate online or in person.

  • What type of schedule do you need? Online programs typically offer more flexibility that appeals to students who work full time or have personal responsibilities to fit around their school schedule. Online degrees allow learners to pursue higher education without putting their career on hold. This is especially true for programs that offer asynchronous coursework that students complete on their own time.
  • What learning style works best for you? Do you work well independently and with a lot of freedom? If so, an online doctorate might be a good fit for you. If you think you’d prefer the camaraderie of an in-person cohort graduate program and structured opportunities to interact with instructors, an on-campus or hybrid program might suit you better.
  • How does the program format affect your budget? Online programs can help you save on tuition, housing and transportation costs. For example, many public schools allow you to pay the same tuition, regardless of where you live. However, you might miss funding opportunities typically reserved for on-campus students, such as graduate teaching assistantships, research assistantships and fellowships.

The U.S. Department of Education and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) approve accrediting agencies that give schools institutional accreditation in the U.S.

Institutional accreditation means that a university has met minimum quality requirements related to its academics, financial management, faculty and staff, and student resources and services. To qualify for federal financial aid, you must attend an accredited college.

Programmatic accreditation is a separate process that gives special recognition to individual degrees, programs or departments within a university. Depending on your field, you might need a programmatically accredited degree to get a job or qualify for professional licenses or certifications.

You can search for a prospective school’s accreditation status on CHEA’s website .

Consider Your Future Goals

An online doctorate has the potential to help you achieve your career aspirations. However, not every program in your field will necessarily align with your goals. Before you choose an online doctorate program, think about your post-graduation plans.

For example, some online doctorate programs require professional experience through an internship or a practicum. This type of hands-on learning can help you develop your expertise and professional network. But these experiences usually take place in person and can be hard to fit into your schedule if you’re working full time.

You should also consider if you need a specific license or certification to get the job you want. If so, research the credential’s requirements to learn if your degree needs to meet certain criteria. For example, you may need to complete an accredited program or complete supervised clinical hours.

Understand Your Expenses and Financing Options

Tuition rates for online doctoral programs in our guide vary significantly, from $265 to $2,137 per credit. Most programs required 42 to 60 credits, with some exceptions. In total, the degrees ranked on our list cost between $9,540 and $113,400.

According to the National Center for Education Statistics , grad students at private, nonprofit schools paid an average tuition of $20,408 in 2022–23, while public school tuition cost $11,554 per year. Doctorate programs typically take at least three years to complete, putting total costs between $34,662 and $61,224.

Find funding for your online Ph.D. by filling out the FAFSA®, which can connect you with scholarships, grants and student loans. Many schools also provide funding to graduate students through scholarships, grants and fellowships.

Can you do a Ph.D. fully online?

Yes, many schools offer fully online Ph.D. programs. However, depending on the program and the field of study, you may need to complete on-campus residencies or field experiences like internships or practicums that take place in person.

What is the fastest Ph.D. to get online?

Program length for online Ph.D. programs varies depending on your field of study. You might be able to find some accelerated online Ph.D. programs that you can finish in less than two years. However, the best online doctoral programs on our list take at least three years to complete.

Are online doctoral degrees respected?

An online doctoral degree from an accredited university can provide the same rigorous education and training as a comparable on-campus program. If you’re concerned about whether or not your degree will be respected, consider doing some research about the way that your field or profession tends to view online doctoral degrees.

What is the best online school for a Ph.D.?

The best online school for a Ph.D. depends on your field of study, personal interests and career goals. Make sure that any prospective online school is institutionally accredited. Depending on the degree you want to pursue, it might also be important to find a program with separate programmatic accreditation.

1-Year Online PhD Programs

1-year PhD programs online is a bit of a misnomer, at least, the 1-year part. There are few to no legitimate PhD programs online or in-person that last only one year. The minimum for how long does it take to get a PhD is three years, and even those programs are few and far between. Even the easiest PhD programs to get into will take up to three or four years to complete, so don’t expect a fast track when it comes to completing your doctorate. In this article, we’ll give you a list of some of the shortest online graduate programs available for doctorate degrees in both the US and Canada.

Pros of 1-Year PhD Programs Online

1. flexibility for working professionals and mature students.

Doing any PhD program requires a serious investment of time and money but pursuing a 1-year PhD program online offers you a flexible schedule, so you can more easily balance work, family and other responsibilities with your studies. Many of these 1-year PhD programs online were designed specifically for this demographic, and offer both full-time or part-time schedules, while they also let you submit references from employers rather than academic sources. Some of the online MBA programs on this list require that you have work experience, so they are conscious of the fact that you will have other responsibilities to attend to.

2. Advanced-Technology Learning Environments

One interesting aspect of 1-year PhD programs online is that you can use and train on advanced technologies that you wouldn’t normally use in an in-person setting. Of course, you do have access to these types of programs and software as an in-person student, but the nature of online, distance courses mean you rely more heavily on interactive simulations, virtual laboratories, and dynamic multimedia content. You can even benefit from the online platforms and document management software that many universities use, to help you submit your assignments and upload your essays, by enhancing and refining your technical skills.

3. Cost Savings and Accessibility

A large part of what makes any undergraduate, graduate and professional programs expensive is the associated cost-of-living expenses that can balloon over time. Fortunately, 1-year PhD programs online eliminate those costs through their distance and virtual formats so you do not have to spend money on living accommodations, transportation, food and other costs.

For the online PhD Psychology program at Walden University, you only have to pay your tuition costs, which at $665-per credit for a 60-credit program comes out to around $39,900 per year. If we compare this figure to a similar PhD program at, let’s say Harvard University - $51,904 per year, over five or six years: $259,520 to $311,424 - which is an extreme example, we can see that there are significant savings in pursuing a 1-year PhD program online rather than in-person.

Additionally, some universities offer reduced tuition rates for online students, and you can still apply for different types of scholarships and financial aid if you apply to an online program. This accessibility makes getting a PhD easier for people from low-income backgrounds and marginalized groups who might otherwise face financial and geographical constraints.

Cons of 1-Year PhD Programs Online

1. limited networking opportunities.

One drawback of online PhD programs is the fact that you don’t have a lot of face-to-face interactions with your fellow students, faculty or other professionals. Traditional, in-person graduate programs often offer more networking opportunities through seminars, conferences, and on-campus events. While many of these 1-year PhD programs online offer virtual platforms to make it easier to connect with other students, they do not always replicate the depth or warmth of in-person relationships. Being in a virtual format also removes the ability of speaking directly with professors and faculty who can help guide your academic or career goals, which are usually highlights of attending in-person classes.

2. You Must Develop Self-Discipline and Time Management

These kinds of skills are necessary for in-person programs as well, but as you have more freedom in a 1-year PhD program online, you must be more vigilant and disciplined as it will be easier for you to procrastinate and put off either listening to a virtual lecture or doing your homework. As you’ll be responsible for organizing your time, you must also have a high degree of time management skills. Without the structure of regular on-campus classes, you must be self-motivated and proactive in managing your coursework and deadlines. You also have to set a study schedule and stick to it, even though it may be hard to do so if you are working full-time or have a family.

1. Have a High GPA and Excel Academically

Many of these 1-year PhD programs online do not ask for any standardized test scores, so the only way they can properly assess your fitness for an advanced, doctorate-degree program is by reviewing your transcripts. Not only is having a high GPA a requirement to get into the program, it can also help you get scholarships for these programs. If you’ve decided to get an advanced degree you might already be an excellent student, so you may not have to find out how to get into a grad school with a low GPA . B ut if you're coming from a professional background and haven’t been in school for a long time, many of these programs will consider your professional experience (if in a related field) as a sign of your academic prowess and potential, which you can convey in your resume, CV for grad school and your letters of recommendation.

2. Write Excellent Statements and Proposals

Getting into a graduate program relies not only on your academic performance but displaying your knowledge, writing skills, and creativity through your research proposals, letters of intent, statement of purpose or personal statement. Different programs will ask for different letters, but they all ask for a combination of these documents, which you must take your time in crafting and writing. A research proposal should follow the strict format guidelines of most conventional research proposals in that you must set forth an objective, a research method, and thesis, among other elements. But your personal statement or statement of purpose can be more about your motivations to pursue your field of study, and why you want to do it at the school you’re applying to. Of course, some 1-year PhD programs online have content requirements that you must write about in your statements so you should always follow what they set out as what you should write.

3. Get Great Letters of Recommendation

Your letters of recommendation play a pivotal role in opening doors to these programs, as there are very few ways for how to get into grad school without letters of recommendation. You require specific skills to successfully complete a 1-year PhD program online and there is no better way for schools to know you have these skills outside of recommendation letters, as they do not require standardized test scores. If you’re applying for a doctorate in business administration, a sterling letter of recommendation from any employer can emphasize your professional aptitudes, initiative, and problem-solving skills. If you’re going into a research-heavy program, such as a humanities or social sciences program, an exceptional letter from a professor should focus on your research acumen and your creative contributions to your class or degree program. You should tailor your letters to your specific field and program, but at the same time, remember to get letters only from the sources your program stipulates.

1-year PhD programs online do not exist, but there are several online PhD programs that take longer than one year; an online PhD program takes a minimum of three years to complete, but more, depending on the program and subject.

The benefits of a 1-year PhD program online are their affordability, the flexible schedule, the quality of the program, and the skills you’ll learn taking classes virtually.

The disadvantages include not having direct access to your fellow students and professors, not being able to access the social, academic, professional and recreational facilities of a university. You also have to act more responsibly and manage your time better than you would as an in-person student.

The main differences between a 1-year PhD program online and traditional PhD programs are the costs associated with a 1-year PhD program, which are much less than in-person programs that come with attendant costs.

Fortunately, you have the same opportunities as a 1-year PhD program online student as in-person students. You can apply for the same positions including as a professor or faculty member, a managerial or executive position, or go on to do more research at another academic institution.

Whether employers will look or “accept” your 1-year PhD depends on the position you’re applying for and what their requirements are. Many of these schools are reputable, accredited institutions so there is no reason why their degrees will not be accepted in the job market.

Yes, many of these 1-year PhD program online have flexible schedules as well as asynchronous elements so you can review materials, watch lectures, study and write your essays on your own time.

Taking a 1-year PhD program online depends on what your goals are. If you want to advance in your current position or take up teaching or even get a better salary, a PhD program online can help you do that, but you must be clear in your intentions and whether a 1-year PhD program online can help you.

  • Geographical Accessibility: Online programs eliminate geographical constraints, enabling students to enroll in prestigious universities without relocating. This accessibility expands the pool of potential programs and faculty members.
  • Cost Savings: Online doctoral programs often reduce costs associated with commuting, housing, and campus fees. Additionally, students can continue working while pursuing their degree, potentially offsetting tuition expenses.
  • Diverse Learning Environment: Online doctoral programs attract a diverse cohort of students from various backgrounds and locations. This diversity enriches discussions, bringing different perspectives to academic discourse.
  • Technology Integration: Online programs leverage advanced technology, providing access to a variety of digital resources, virtual libraries, and collaborative platforms. This enhances the learning experience and allows students to engage with cutting-edge tools.

Cons of Online Doctoral Degrees:

  • Limited Networking Opportunities: Online programs may offer fewer networking opportunities compared to traditional on-campus experiences. Building professional relationships and collaborations can be challenging in a virtual environment.
  • Potential for Isolation: Doctoral studies can already be isolating, and online programs may exacerbate this by limiting face-to-face interactions with peers and faculty. The lack of a physical campus environment may lead to feelings of isolation.
  • Varied Program Quality: The quality of online doctoral programs can vary. Prospective students must thoroughly research programs to ensure they meet academic standards and offer the necessary resources for research and dissertation work.
  • Technical Challenges: Online learning relies heavily on technology, and technical issues such as poor internet connectivity or platform malfunctions can disrupt the learning experience. This may hinder participation in live discussions or access to materials.
  • Perceived Credibility: While online education is becoming more widely accepted, some employers and academics may still harbor reservations about the credibility of online doctoral degrees. It’s crucial to choose a reputable institution to mitigate this concern.

Are Online PhD Programs Respected?

When professionals think of pursuing their doctorate degrees, what comes to their mind is “are online PhDs respected?”All online programs are respected as long as they are from institutions that are accredited by relevant bodies, and online degree programs are no exemption. Of course, not all online programs offering doctoral degrees are the same. Look for online doctoral degrees offered from reputable institutions. Ask yourself- are the online programs at this institution the same as the campus counterparts? Is the same faculty teaching within the online programs?

Most people who want to pursue a doctorate degree are busy professionals who are not able to accommodate a traditional course of study. Maybe they are a Nurse Practitioner and they would like to step up to a Doctor of Nursing Practice. Online doctoral degrees can help them achieve this. The best online PhD programs are offered in regionally accredited institutions. An independent body such as WSCUC reviews the degree programs offered in the institution and judges them on different factors before giving accreditation.

How Long Do Accredited Online PhD Programs Take?

Enrolling in a doctorate program after a bachelor’s degree is a big commitment and a huge step towards advancing one’s career and achieving excellence in any field. The length of time it takes to complete an online doctorate program depends on the type of program and how many credits it requires to complete. Most traditional PhD programs take between four to seven years but online students are allowed up to ten years to complete.

Online programs allow students to pursue their doctorate at their own pace. There are accelerated doctoral degree programs online that take as short as one year to complete. The length also depends on whether you have a master’s degree or you are pursuing a direct entry PhD. A master’s degree may allow online students to transfer some credits to their doctorate. On the other hand, direct entry programs may require students to take extra credits. The shortest doctoral degree programs online are found in public service, law, government, engineering, educational leadership, and arts programs.

The quickest PhD ever is a PhD in philosophy. As long as one already has some publications, one can become a doctor of philosophy in less than a year. One can also pursue 1-year Ph.D degree programs online in other fields of study as long as they are ready to spend enough time studying and researching.

Reasons to Get an Online Ph.D.

Whether you earn a Ph.D. or doctorate ultimately depends on your academic interests and how you want to shape your career or contribute to a body of knowledge.

Career Advancement and Earnings Potential Considered terminal or professional degrees, PhDs, and professional doctorates will help advance your career and demonstrate your dedication and expertise in your chosen field. Whether your interests are in theory, research, creating (or contributing) to a knowledge base, or expanding your expertise in an applied profession, earning a Ph.D. and/or doctorate is the logical step.

Professional Expertise Among the top Ph.D. disciplines are science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Education, Law, and Business also rank highly in the most sought-after programs.

If you’re particularly passionate about a topic or field and want to do a deep dive into the subject and conduct research to enhance the field, earning an online Ph.D. or doctorate is the logical next step.

Networking Ph.D. programs will allow you to interact with other professionals with similar interests as yours. You’ll be able to share knowledge, and it will give you a base to explore research grants, other funding opportunities, and employment options.

Earnings In 2023 the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that people holding a Ph.D. degree experienced lower unemployment and significantly higher salaries than people who had less education. BLS cites those with doctoral or professional degrees can earn a median salary of $103,820.

ZipRecruiter, an online employment service, states the average hourly rate for a doctorate is around $68 an hour, although some are in the $191 range. Salaries and compensation will vary depending on location, skills, and years of experience but average $141,097.

Cost Although Ph.D.s can be costly, online programs can save you significant money by reducing travel expenses. Frequently, colleges and universities charge out-of-state students in-state tuition which will save you money.

Convenience The convenience of an online academic program can’t be overstated. Unless you’ve won the PowerBall, online programs save you time and money and allow you to continue to work to support yourself or a family.

Accredited online Ph.D.s and doctorates greatly expand your geographic reach, making it possible for you to enter a program in another state that best suits your objectives.

Coursework can frequently be presented over the Internet, allowing you to study at a time and place that works best for you. Access to online libraries saves time traveling to a university campus or public library.

Interactions with classmates, subject matter experts, and professors can be conducted using online video apps such as Zoom, Vimeo, or Google Meet. Depending on your program, you may be required to attend on-campus intensives, which are usually held over weekends or at designated times.

How Much Do Online PhD Programs Cost?

If your professional goal is to teach at the university level, snag a high-level executive position, or conduct ground-breaking research, a Ph.D. or doctorate is your foot in the door. Inevitably, the final decision to pursue a PhD or doctorate will probably boil down to if you can afford it. Advanced degrees aren’t necessarily cheap and may cause you to go into debt, but depending on the discipline, they can be affordable and worth the expense.

School Choice – Several factors, such as your school choice and field of study, can influence your costs for a Ph.D. Naturally, there are differences in tuition at a public college or university and private institutions. Prestige also plays a part. Ivy League schools may charge a premium for their doctorate programs.

Doctorate of Education Ed.D. vs. Ph.D. in Education – The differences between an Ed.D. and a Ph.D. can influence your cost due to the amount of time spent earning the degree. An Ed.D. may take 3-5 years, and a Ph.D. will take longer.

Doctorate of Psychology Psy.D. vs. Ph.D. – Again, like the doctorate in Education, there’s a difference in length of study, with the Psy.D. taking up to 4-5 years and the Ph.D. requiring 5-7 years.

Financial Assistance

Colleges and universities frequently fund Ph.D. and doctoral candidates. Funding may come in the form of waived tuition and fees as well as providing a stipend. While difficult for online Ph.D. programs, internships, assistantships, and fellowships may also be available.

For example, if you work in a healthcare setting and are pursuing a Doctor of Nursing Practice, it benefits your employer to support you in earning an advanced degree.

Federal student loans are also available for doctoral students, and you can borrow up to $20,500 each year in Direct Unsubsidized Loans. These loans are fixed and usually at a lower interest rate than commercial loans or credit cards. Repayment options are typically flexible. You’ll want to discuss your options with the Financial Aid Office.

Do I Have to Write a Dissertation for an Online PhD?

As much as getting a doctoral degree has many benefits, the work that goes into achieving it requires much dedication. There are many roadblocks on the road to achieving your PhD, including family responsibilities, work, time, and money. Many professionals looking to further their educations are always asking, “What is the easiest doctorate degree?” Well, there are no dissertation PhD programs. Accelerated PhD programs do not require a dissertation to graduate and take one year to complete. One-year doctorate programs are available in select universities across the country but are more intensive and require students to study full time. Some of the programs that do not require a dissertation include Doctor of Management (DM), Juris doctorates, law degree (JD), Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT), and Doctor of Education (EdD).

The most common doctorate degree online no dissertation is the Doctorate in Leadership . This is a doctorate that applies in many disciplines including Organizational Leadership, Leadership and Management, and Higher Education Leadership. A traditional doctoral program uses dissertations to assess the student’s knowledge in the field. Universities that offer accelerated doctoral degree programs understand that it is not the only way to assess the student’s knowledge in the field and they use other parameters such as doctoral capstone projects (along with online courses). Online students that already have published books and journals can also begin their degree without a dissertation.

Are There Any Online PhD Programs Without GRE or GMAT Requirements?

The online no GRE PhD programs are gaining popularity in many universities. These universities instead use the student’s professional experience, academic merits, and their motivation among other factors to admit them to their graduate programs. The GRE can be a big hurdle for online students who want to pursue their PhD programs but do not have the time and money to invest in studying for the standardized exams. There are a number of online degree PhD programs that do not require GRE online and others that the GRE can be waived under special circumstances.

Do I Need a Master’s Degree to Enroll in an Online Doctoral Degree Program?

There are a number of PhD programs without requiring a master’s degree in many universities in the U.S. Some accept students with undergraduate degrees into their degree programs and award them the master’s degree during the course after a certain amount of coursework has been completed. Others have specific stipulations for students applying for their doctoral programs without a master’s degree. For example, many universities will allow registered nurses to pursue their doctoral degrees if they pass an interview. There are universities that will confer a master’s degree once a student is admitted to the doctoral program. Universities offering PhD without a master’s admit exceptional students with outstanding grades and sometimes at least two years of professional experience.

A guide for first year PhD students: Expectations, responsibilities, advice

Featured blog post image for A guide for first year PhD students - Expectations, responsibilities, advice

The first year of a PhD can feel like a rollercoaster ride. First-year PhD students are ambitious and want to fulfil expectations. At the same time, they may be unsure of what these expectations and their responsibilities are. This guide aims to provide first-year PhD students with some directions and advice.

The first year as a PhD student: Excitement, ambition, overwhelm

Starting a PhD is exciting. Securing a PhD position is a major life event, and often something that first-year year PhD students have been working towards for a long time.

First-year PhD students want to do well, make progress with their projects and meet their supervisors’ expectations. However, it is not always clear what that means.

Questions like these, and insecurities, often develop early on in a PhD journey.

What to expect as a first-year PhD student

Succeeding in academia has many facets, including your thesis or dissertation, but also learning new skills, and developing relationships with supervisors, colleagues and scholars in your field. All of that takes energy.

Set realistic expectations for yourself in the first year of your PhD. Not everything will work out as planned. Research takes time, and setbacks are inevitable.

First-year PhD students can also expect to read and explore a lot. At times, this involves going down the rabbit hole of academic literature: processing new information, frameworks and perspectives before discarding them again.

Responsibilities of a first-year PhD student

However, frequently a key responsibility of a PhD student is to develop a firm research proposal in the first year, which is often coupled with an extensive literature review.

All in all, a first-year PhD student is responsible to get organised and create a feasible plan for the coming years. The first year is meant to set the foundation for the PhD trajectory .

Unless the PhD programme is followed online, and unless there is a pandemic raging, first-year PhD students are additionally often expected to actively participate in the research group, lab or department in which they are based.

A supervisor’s expectations of a first-year PhD student

While this can certainly happen, I dare to say that this is not the norm.

For instance, PhD supervisors tend to appreciate some levels of regularity and consistency. While it is absolutely normal to have periods where you make more progress (for instance in writing) than in others, it is not good to contact your supervisor every day for a month, and then fall off the earth for half a year.

Lastly, supervisors often expect PhD students to take matters into their own hands. Instead of simply waiting for instruction, this means that first-year PhD students should be in the driver’s seat of their journey. Therefore, it is no surprise that proactiveness is one of the 10 qualities of successful PhD students.

Why is it raining more in Milwaukee this summer?

If you feel like you’ve been waking up to gloomy mornings for weeks in a row, you’re not imagining it: so far, this summer in Milwaukee has been more rainy than last year.

Since mid-May, it’s rained at least every few days, according to National Weather Service data . The longest streak of non-rainy days in the past two months was three days from May 17 to 19.

The summer rain comes after Milwaukee logged its third-wettest spring on record this year,  according to National Weather Service data going back to the 1870s. The spike in precipitation was a shift from last year’s historically dry spring , which eventually triggered a drought from May to June 2023.

Here’s what else to know about the rainy weather in Milwaukee this summer.

How much more rainy is it this year?

In June, Milwaukee saw 18 rainy days — up from eight days in 2023 and 10 days in 2022.

The city last experienced a June with 18 rainy days in 2021, but the total rain that month added up to 2.25 inches. This June, the total rain clocked in at 4.71 inches, slightly higher than the average of 4.38 inches from 1990 to 2022.

Across the state, this May was Wisconsin’s 10th wettest ever since 1895, according to the National Integrated Drought Information System . The NWS logged 6.52 inches of rain in May, up from the 3.52 inches average.

Why is it raining more than last year?

Incoming La Niña conditions are likely causing the rainier weather in Milwaukee, according to local NWS meteorologist Cameron Miller. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration issued a La Niña watch in mid-June, a warning of below-average water temperatures brewing in the central Pacific Ocean. La Niña conditions are likely to develop between July and September and persist into the winter, according to NOAA.

“That means there’s going to be colder waters moving into the area that’s off of South America,” Miller said. “Typically, that gives us a little bit cooler, a little bit wetter conditions around the upper Midwest here.”

In previous years, the jet stream — strong winds that blow from west to east — has moved north earlier in the year, Miller said. That’s led to large areas of high pressure forming over the Central Plains and blocking off rain across the Midwest in the summer months.

“This particular year, we're not seeing that early start to the high pressure patterns over the Central Plains,” Miller added. “We did have it for a few weeks there — mid June, we were getting up into the 90s — but since then, we’ve kind of gone into a cooler pattern and gotten more rain.”

Still, Miller said the rainier weather is not yet a concern compared to last year’s drought. Though rain was about a third of an inch above average last month, last year Milwaukee saw only 1.82 inches of rain during June — more than two inches below normal.

What is the forecast for the rest of the summer?

It’s hard to predict how long the La Niña conditions will persist after they arrive, which also makes it difficult to say how the weather will look the rest of the summer, Miller said.

Once the La Niña conditions set in, the Midwest will see cooler weather, he said.

But at least for the next month, Wisconsin is in a “neutral phase,” with equal chances for hotter-than-average or cooler-than-average temperature, he added. For the next three months, in general, climate forecasts show a 40% to 50% chance of above-average temperatures.

Des Moines, DMPS partner to offer free all-day preschool to 4-year-olds

Just one year into a partnership with the city of Des Moines meant to help bring free all-day preschool to families with 4-year-olds, Des Moines Public Schools is set to add two more classes.

The three-year partnership — known formally as the ARPA (American Rescue Plan Act) funding agreement — allots $3.3 million of the city's federal COVID relief funds to Des Moines schools to help cover the cost of all-day preschool classes in underserved neighborhoods.

School officials spoke at a recent Des Moines City Council meeting about the progress students made in six ARPA-funded classrooms during the 2023-24 school year.

The students showed major academic improvements from fall to spring, according to the results of the GOLD assessment , district director of early childhood Kristin Rourk told council members.

Education advocates say students who attend preschool do better academically and are more likely to graduate high school.

"The investment that the city is making really speaks to the importance of investing in our community because we know this investment just isn't for this year or next year, the success of this will impact our community for many years to come," Rourk told the Des Moines Register.

Here is everything you need to know about the partnership:

Is my child required to attend preschool?

No, Iowa does not mandate preschool attendance.

Des Moines Public Schools officials have made expanding funding for universal all-day preschool for 4-year-olds the district's legislative priority the last few years.

How many preschool classes does Des Moines Public Schools offer?

Including the six partnership classrooms, the district has 28 all-day preschool classes. That number will rise to 32 next school year with the addition of two more free classes and two additional all-day Montessori preschool classes. The Montessori classes are not free.

The district also offers 72 half-day preschool classes throughout the district.

"Our enrollment was a little over 1,000 for 4-year-olds in our DMPS classrooms," Rourk said.

Why doesn't the district offer 4-year-old preschool for everyone?

Funding plays a large part in why Des Moines Public Schools cannot offer universal all-day preschool for 4-year-olds.

Iowa schools receive 50% of per pupil funding per preschool student — about $3,900 — to cover 10 hours of class each week, Rourk said. The district covers an additional five hours with its own funds.

Families who want their 4-year-olds to attend all-day preschool can pay $125-a-week or apply for a scholarship, she said. The ARPA-supported classrooms give priority to families whose income is no more than 200% above the poverty level.

Where are the ARPA-funded all-day preschools located?

During the 2023-24 school year, Greenwood and Carver elementary schools each had two classrooms, and Capitol View and Jackson each had one.

Some of the classrooms are expected to move buildings before school starts in August. The two new classes will be at Garton and Madison elementary schools.

How can I sign my child up for free all-day preschool?

Families should check with the district's Welcome Center at the Kurtz Opportunity Center, 1000 Porter Ave., Des Moines, to see if there is an opening at their school, Rourk said.

How are the ARPA students scoring on assessments?

In fall, students scored 43% for social emotional skills and 96% in the spring, Rourk told the council.

In language (following directions and clarity of speech), students went from 47% to 98%; cognitive 48% to 98%; literacy scores went from 39% to 99%; math saw the biggest gains from 18% to 97%; and physical (fine and gross motor skills) went from 82% to 99%.

The data bodes well for students as the city and district continue to invest in students, said Des Moines Public Schools Superintendent Ian Roberts during the council meeting.

“When we look at our elementary school students in grades one through five who attended preschool in Des Moines Public Schools compared to those who did not, we see differences in academic achievement that is as high as 32 percentage points," Roberts said at the time.

What happens when the ARPA funding runs out?

The ARPA funding agreement between the city and Des Moines schools is for $1.3 million for the 2023-24 school year, $1 million for 2024-25 and $1 million for 2025-26.

The hope is by the end for the third year, lawmakers will have passed all-day funding for universal 4-year-old preschool, said Rourk.

How are Des Moines schools' officials spending the $3.3 million ?

The funds are being used to cover the cost of staffing the rooms including benefits, and for classroom furniture and materials.

It could also be useful for anyone interested in directing public policy, conducting policy-related research, teaching public administration courses, or working in a legislative capacity.

Healthcare services manager, greeting some hospital staff

Doctoral candidates in public health learn about biostatistics and epidemiology. It’s also helpful to understand factors that influence people’s health, such as genetics, environment, and human behavior.

If you get a PhD in Public Health, you may study grant writing, health ethics, and the structure of the healthcare system as well. This PhD could be useful for anyone who wants to be involved in research and development for public health policies. The degree could also lead to a career as a public health professor or the leader of a healthcare organization.
