Model Answer:
English, as a language of communication, is highly sought after by parents, teachers and students alike. Unfortunately, it is often the case that regional or local languages are often overlooked. Pupils almost always have a preference for English over local languages. This puts the local languages at risk of dying out. If there is virtually no one interested in learning a particular language then it is highly possible that the language in question might as well cease to exist some day.
I am of the opinion that in this globalised world, it is important to learn English. This is because English is a widely recognised international language that is not only the language of international commerce but of academics, too. However, it is equally important to preserve the local languages too. When a language dies out or goes extinct, it is not just its lexicon and grammatical rules that die out; the cultural peculiarities and ethos that a language often possesses die out as well. A vast amount of literature that was probably written in that particular language becomes incomprehensible to a majority and thus rendered useless. The folklores, lineages and genealogy associated with the culture cease to exist which is often the case with those regional languages which had oral traditions.
While preserving a language is not a trivial task, we can make a start by promoting the regional language through organising cultural events, making it a medium of formal instructions at schools, holding literary competitions and arranging incentives to use the local/regional language. Instilling a sense of pride in the heart of denizens about the regional language would go a long way too in preventing the local languages from dying out.
In conclusion, albeit, learning English is critical for anyone who wants to pursue a career or trade across national borders, local languages are equally essential to keep us rooted to our culture and traditions. In my opinion, a nations should make special efforts to prevent regional languages from dying out.

Band 9: Learning English at school is often seen as more important than learning local languages. If these are not taught, many are at risk of dying out. In your opinion, is it important for everyone to learn English? Should we try to ensure the survival of local languages and, if so, how? You should give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own experience or knowledge to support your response.
English is often referred to as an international language, which leads many schools to prioritize it over other languages. If this trend continues, there is a risk that other languages may face extinction. In my opinion, all languages are equally important for people.
The English language has long served as a means of communication between countries. A significant portion of the global population is able to communicate in English. Moreover, English movies, songs, and news are more popular worldwide than those in other languages. This highlights its importance and helps to reduce language barriers. Learning a new language can also boost individual confidence; for organizations, it can contribute to their success in global markets. For instance, tech companies like Apple and Microsoft conduct most of their work in English.
Local languages are just as important as English, as they promote the culture and traditions of a country. It is our responsibility to respect these languages and ensure that no other dialects overshadow them. To foster this practice, citizens should take pride in their national history and strive to keep their language prominent. People should also make an effort to recover rare dialects. In countries like Japan and China, the populations value their languages so much that they use them everywhere while still engaging in worldwide business.
In conclusion, it is advantageous for individuals to be proficient in both English and their local languages. It is unnecessary to belittle any language in comparison to another. Ultimately, being bilingual can be beneficial for personal development and can enrich one’s life.

There is a prevalent consensus in the educational sector that views English as a paramount language, often overshadowing native languages. Consequently, there is insufficient emphasis on teaching local languages within academic institutions. Nonetheless, I contend that while it is essential for individuals to possess a foundational understanding of English, it is equally important to uphold […]
Some people may argue that learning their mother tongue in school is not as necessary as learning to speak English. Yet, this might be the main impetus for their language’s annihilation. This does not mean that local languages are dispensable, however. They have an important role to play in supporting education, including English language education. People who insist […]

In today’s fast-paced world, youngsters are spending their free time in shopping malls rather than doing organized activities, such as sports or music. In myriad countries, people increasingly tend to talk about financial matters in their daily conversations.
