Why you should submit to writing contests

Submitting to poetry competitions and free writing contests in 2024 is absolutely worth your while as an aspiring author: just as your qualifications matter when you apply for a new job, a writing portfolio that boasts published works and award-winning pieces is a great way to give your writing career a boost. And not to mention the bonus of cash prizes!

That being said, we understand that taking part in writing contests can be tough for emerging writers. First, there’s the same affliction all writers face: lack of time or inspiration. Entering writing contests is a time commitment, and many people decide to forego this endeavor in order to work on their larger projects instead — like a full-length book. Second, for many writers, the chance of rejection is enough to steer them clear of writing contests. 

But we’re here to tell you that two of the great benefits of entering writing contests happen to be the same as those two reasons to avoid them.

When it comes to the time commitment: yes, you will need to expend time and effort in order to submit a quality piece of writing to competitions. That being said, having a hard deadline to meet is a great motivator for developing a solid writing routine.

Think of entering contests as a training session to become a writer who will need to meet deadlines in order to have a successful career. If there’s a contest you have your eye on, and the deadline is in one month, sit down and realistically plan how many words you’ll need to write per day in order to meet that due date — and don’t forget to also factor in the time you’ll need to edit your story!

In regards to the fear of rejection, the truth is that any writer aspiring to become a published author needs to develop relatively thick skin. If one of your goals is to have a book traditionally published, you will absolutely need to learn how to deal with rejection, as traditional book deals are notoriously hard to score. If you’re an indie author, you will need to adopt the hardy determination required to slowly build up a readership.

The good news is that there’s a fairly simple trick for learning to deal with rejection: use it as a chance to explore how you might be able to improve your writing.

In an ideal world, each rejection from a publisher or contest would come with a detailed letter, offering construction feedback and pointing out specific tips for improvement. And while this is sometimes the case, it’s the exception and not the rule.

Still, you can use the writing contests you don’t win as a chance to provide yourself with this feedback. Take a look at the winning and shortlisted stories and highlight their strong suits: do they have fully realized characters, a knack for showing instead of telling, a well-developed but subtly conveyed theme, a particularly satisfying denouement?

The idea isn’t to replicate what makes those stories tick in your own writing. But most examples of excellent writing share a number of basic craft principles. Try and see if there are ways for you to translate those stories’ strong points into your own unique writing.

Finally, there are the more obvious benefits of entering writing contests: prize and publication. Not to mention the potential to build up your readership, connect with editors, and gain exposure.

Every writing contest has its own set of submission rules. Whether those rules are dense or sparing, ensure that you follow them to a T. Disregarding the guidelines will not sway the judges’ opinion in your favor — and might disqualify you from the contest altogether.

After you submit to a writing competition in 2024

It’s exciting to send a piece of writing off to a contest. However, once the initial excitement wears off, you may be left waiting for a while. Some writing contests will contact all entrants after the judging period — whether or not they’ve won. Other writing competitions will only contact the winners. 

Here are a few things to keep in mind after you submit:

Many writing competitions don’t have time to respond to each entrant with feedback on their story. However, it never hurts to ask! Feel free to politely reach out requesting feedback — but wait until after the selection period is over.

If you’ve submitted the same work to more than one writing competition or literary magazine, remember to withdraw your submission if it ends up winning elsewhere.

After you send a submission, don’t follow it up with a rewritten or revised version. Instead, ensure that your first version is thoroughly proofread and edited. If not, wait until the next edition of the contest or submit the revised version to other writing contests.

Bob was a wise, elderly man with no family. He had his house in Dehradun, a peaceful and quiet place indeed. He was a famous writer in his town. People used to pay him a considerable sum to get their hands on his poems and stories. That morning was the clearest of all. The sky was blue. The grass was green and luscious. The perfect weather for writing a novel. But Bob didn't want to write a novel. In fact, he hadn't written one in years. The reason was his daughter. He had a daughter who was 18 when she disappeared. Her name was Stephanie. Bob and Stephanie were taking a stroll outside when Stephanie got a call from the woods, which she followed. She was expected to return in a while, but she never did. 5 years had gone by, and there was no trace of her. After a year of searching, Bob finally gave up the fact that Stephanie would never return. Bob used to spend each moment of his life as a melancholy soul. What could he even do? 

"Stephanie, Oh my dear, where are you now?

We were walking happily, but you went away somehow

 Please come back, my dear; I miss you so much

Play with me like before, and I'll give you a hunch."

That's the one couplet Bob used to speak to himself every second he was idle. He was so miserable. 

But maybe that day was the end of his misery. Because the next day, when Bob was reclining on his antique rocking chair, he glimpsed a young lady coming towards him. She was tall and fair. Her hair was long and straight. She has brown eyes and broad eyelids. Stephanie also had the same features as a teenager. Bob was more certain that she was her daughter when she called," Daddy! I am here at last." Bob stood up, corrected his spectacles and walked briskly towards her in joy. Stephanie ran towards him too. They reached a point and hugged each other tightly. Stephanie was about to give an explanation for her disappearance, but Bob cut her sentence and said," Don't say a word. I want to spend a peaceful time with you, my sweat pea. I will hear your story later on.'' Saying this, he grabbed her hand and took her inside.

A small act of giving could mean everything to a person. Giving not only makes the other person happy but also makes us happy. As said,' make others happy, and you will be satisfied in the same way give and give, and you will feel better.

Bill Gates, one of the wealthiest people in the world, still has a kind, generous heart. When we are super rich or famous, we tend to become more competitive, and while doing that, we sometimes forget about the value of giving. Giving did no harm to Bill Gates; he has succeeded as a better human being. This doesn't mean we only offer when we are super-rich; we can provide as we wish.

We can give hope, love and happiness, and that is, in fact, faithful giving. When we give, we shouldn't expect the same from a person. We should give from our hearts.

At Christmas, we receive gifts but have we ever thought that instead of receiving, we should give more and buy things, not for us but others in need. If we can not afford it, it makes no sense to buy things for us until we need them. There is a tremendous difference between want and need. When we want something, we don't really need them; when we need them, we want to use them properly. So on Christmas, we should give and not take, and we should give it in such a way that we do not mind if the other offers a return gift. 

Giving is a sense of happiness and pleasure. Making someone smile makes your day smile.

• Human Quality: Humility - Rishona Chopra

We all want to be humble and modest, but sometimes, ego seems to take over, and we end up feeling prideful. The simplest way to check is - When we are humble, we are in the giving mode, radiating our love and purity to others. When there is ego, we shift to the asking way where we want to love and respect. And then we start radiating rejection, anger or hurt. If we are not aware of it, there is a possibility that our ego will surface. Remain calm and stable whether you receive appreciation or criticism. Expectations, competition and comparison, will slowly finish. Every time you act with humility, your ego gets defeated. There is always someone greater than us, someone better. Often we end up in the trap of jealousy rather than appreciating the person. Appreciation for others shows your modesty and humbleness. Instead of thinking about ourselves, we understand other person's efforts. Values like cooperation and respect come in when we have the base of humility ready. • A Selfless Person - Yunika Pokharel

The most selfless person in my life is my MOM. I think she is the selfless one because being selfless is that you feel less about yourself and more about others. When you are generous and kind, you think about others before you, have humanity in you, consider others, and then be called selfless.

As for my mom or anyone's, it's the same. Mother always thinks for everyone before her. I want to share an incident with you. Once when my mom had gone out for some work, and when she was back, she bought some eatables for us. My brother was excited, and he started searching for it. When he got it, he had it and went. My mom gave the leftovers to my dad and me.

Later I learned that she didn't have any of the eatables and just gave them to us, although it was her favourite, this thinking of my mother keeping everyone before she makes me feel that she is the one who is selfless in my life. Yunika Pokharel Pestalozzin World India

What have I learnt from My Good School - Shambhavi Nautiyal

There are a colossal of amazing things that I have learnt from my one year at My Good School. I read three meaningful and impactful books and got to know three very new authors that helped to make my year a little more bedazzling. Reading is all about simplicity and beauty, which I was able to experience regularly throughout this year. Though I couldn't reflect much in the written form, as far as I can tell, I did have the chance to go through the whole discussion and analysis in the meetings. I enjoyed expanding my knowledge of articulation and vocabulary and viewing the world through different perspectives. I made new friends and got to know their stories and opinions. The first book that we read, Dr Anupam Sibal's "Is Your Child Ready to face the world?', was a book that made me dive into the observations and life lessons manifested through the life of the author. I believe it gave me a view of the world I will be stepping into soon. That book made me discern what those virtues meant to me and how I would want to when I grow. Even today, if someone ever asks me about some helpful self-help book recommendations, then I would only ask for that person to give this book a read. The second book 'Totto-chan, the girl by the window' was written by a Japanese author, Tetsuko Kuroyanagi, a country I admire. This book gave me a view of how childhood is for a Japanese kid, fascinating and adventurous what I was able to make out. The whole book was heartwarming, and it felt like travelling back in time to a different country like I was there. Especially reading these books with all of the My Good School members was fun. It was simply marvellous knowing so many new things every week. I am proud and content with the idea of me being a part of this home-like friendly open programme which is just free of judgements. It's indeed been a roller-coaster ride, somehow. Apart from everything, there is one thing I can say for sure that one-hour meeting felt like a safe place for other children like me who were interested in the beauty of literature and admired it and lived the stories just the way I did. Now that I think of it, I can't express how much gratitude I feel for being able to be a part of this; looking back at it as a journey of improvisation and learning, I don't know if I would even be writing anything if it weren't for My Good School. I would have probably thought for it to be something I couldn't do and just wasn't for me, but because of this practice of reflecting, I have enriched and improved that now I can do it anytime, whenever I think of it. It's been a healing experience, and of course, I want to thank the organisers, Sandeep sir, Monisha ma'am, all the interns who have put so much effort into making this a success and the other members who joined, which always made the meeting come up alive.

Ce que l'indépendance signifie pour moi - rishona chopra.

L'indépendance n'est pas le droit de faire ce que l'on veut mais le droit de faire ce qui est juste. L'indépendance est l'essence de la liberté, le sentiment que nous ne sommes gouvernés par personne d'autre mais que nous avons la possibilité, tout comme les autres, d'explorer et d'apprendre. L'indépendance est un droit qui est beru fondamental et notre besoin mais de nos jours ce besoin est devenu un désir. Beaucoup de gens n'ont pas l'indépendance nécessaire pour prendre leurs décisions dans la vie, faire ce qu'ils veulent, étudier et ne pas vivre sous la domination de quelqu'un. Alors ne prenons pas notre indépendance pour acquise car c'est quelque chose de spécial.

Translation:

Independence is not the right to do as we wish but the right to do what is right. Independence is the essence of freedom, the feeling that we are not ruled by anyone but have the opportunity, just like others, to explore and learn. Independence is a fundamental right and our need, but nowadays, this need has become a want. Many people don't have the independence to make their decisions in life, do what they want, study and not live under the rule of somebody. So let's not take our independence for granted because it is unique.

• The flame must keep burning - Rishona Chopra

Preparations begin with cleaning, painting or even renovation in many houses. What does this spiritually signify? It is a message for us to clean our minds. We need to cleanse it to remove thoughts of anger, criticism, rejection, resentment, hatred, hurt and jealousy. The weight of all this negativity we have been holding on to is weakening the soul. Paint the mind with new colours of peace, love and compassion. We also need to clean our words, actions and behaviour. This has to happen every day, not once a year, so we eventually reach a stage where we have a constantly clean and pure mind and body. Regular practice of meditation and imbibing spiritual knowledge shared by God help us achieve the stage. Gifts and blessings are exchanged during Diwali. Spiritually, it is a message for us to empower and care for each other. A blessing is a high and pure energy vibration we create in our thoughts and express through our words. We have all experienced that the blessings of saints, parents, teachers, family and friends have created miracles in our lives. Irrespective of people’s sanskaras and behaviours, we empower them to change their sanskaras when we create only pure thoughts and words. Our blessings radiate to them to become their reality and change their destiny. Not just on a festival, our every thought and word every day should be a blessing.

• My Covid Experience - Arfa Khan

In the second wave, my whole family (apart from me) caught the virus. My uncle threw a housewarming party, and we all attended it. Because they were relatives, my family took off their masks. A few days later, my grandfather showed symptoms of covid and soon, so did my grandmother; they both got tested and came out positive. We could not find a hospital with vacant beds, so I had to stay isolated in my room for the time being. After searching for many days, my aunt found a hospital and my grandparents were admitted. My father kept going to and fro from the hospital and our home. We barely got time to meet each other. We only talked via video call, and I used my father's old phone, which was very rusty and laggy. Life felt very empty and depressed. Each day was the same; time went by so fast. My father also caught covid because of constant exposure to covid in the hospital, which was soon transmitted to my mother. I had to wear a mask at all times. Because of my society's high number of cases, grocery stores refused to give home deliveries, and mothers had to go out and get them. My other aunt's friend had an organization which delivered food to covid patients, and that's how we got our food. My mother got so sick that she threw up every day for 3 days straight, which was horrifying because I have emetophobia (the fear of vomit). My grandparents had to be kept on ventilators. My grandfather's health was getting worse day by day. On the other hand, my grandmother got discharged but again admitted 2 days later. My grandfather stopped talking and soon didn't even open his eyes; the next day, he died. I saw him on his last day via video call, and I pitied him. All of this happened during my summer vacation (2021). Because of all this chaos, I couldn't complete my holiday homework, and I had to cram it into just 4-5 days. When I look back on it, I feel very empty from the inside. It was the lowest and darkest time of my life. I can see the changes in my everyday things in the absence of my grandfather. I just wish Covid never existed. My family would have been so much better. In fact, the whole world would have been so much better.

Okay! So, I'm going to tell you my feelings about this scenario in points.

When you hear the news, you think of it as a rumour and ignore it for a few weeks.

When the news comes out to be true, you simply are in shock. 

Now, if you want to make a remembrance for them, you can make it from any material you find. 

You decorate it with your words and feelings. 

You Know, I am writing this just to express my feelings. This is an important lesson I learnt from my mentor to ‘ express your heart’ in any form.

• It’s Not Over - Reveda Bhatt

“You die when you die, but it’s not the end.”

Death is the physical end of an organism on this planet which is its definition.

But, as always, in life, there is a twist.

Going deep into its meaning, it’s actually the process via which our soul escapes its present physical appearance into another or somewhere away to a place unknown to mankind. This opens up the question or maybe a belief in our minds about the concept of ‘life after death,’ the study of which is termed as ‘Thanatology.’ After years of denying this hypothetical statement, even some people in the field of Science have given in to believing it.

One of them is Dr. Stephen Mayer of the United States who said that there was a study proposed which states that Life After Death may be a reality. For this study, researchers at the University of Southampton in England examined more than 2000 victims of cardiac arrests from 15 hospitals out of which 360 of them had revived and about 40 percent had some sort of awareness during the period when they were ‘clinically dead.’

You see, lying unconscious or dead, there is something in the body which is conscious and aware of everything going on around.

So, life is not over after death and death is not the end of life.

There supposedly is life after death in a different form, in a different body and in a different world.

It is just a ticket to a plane heading to another land that everyone has to board!

Climate change has troubled  us to be lone, 

But all we humans do is just moan and groan. 

But why can't all humans see,

That soil is the answer; it is our key! 

Long ago, carbon was balanced, 

But the humans made it unbalanced. 

The soil that once held tight,

Had to be lifted from its site. 

Deforestation and desertification were the results, 

And most people didn't react to it, unlike good adults. 

But all we need to do is store carbon in the soil,

So that the carbon no more does its harmful spoils. 

We should restore the soil and the Earth, 

And in the end, all of it would be worth. 

Nature's loving technology was and always be there,

And protecting it should be the duty that we all should swear. 

The answer is right beneath our feet, 

We should always respect and further teach. 

The problem and the answer are simply a matter of balance, 

What we all did was simply a matter of out-balance. 

Will the Earth now heat up?

Or is it a storm in a teacup? 

Whatever we do, 

We shall always remember,

there is no other place like home. 

And there's no clone for mother Earth.

What doesn't kill you makes a fighter. -My injuries made me that.

Footsteps are even lighter. -Knowing I have to leave behind what, once, I cherished.

Doesn't mean I'm over 'cause you're gone. -You, being there, are just a superficial part of my superficial existence, as in I’m happy, really happy when you’re around, as I’m a social animal and the thought of you leaving hurts for a while, but then I just don’t feel it anymore again maybe because I’m a social animal.  So, maybe I’m like so interestingly self-sufficient that I just don’t need anyone else to be the reason for my smile because that place is already reserved by me and those in my heart.

Well, my journey began 30 years ago, in 1992. When 'IBM' invented the first smartphone called 'Simon'. When Simon succeeded, more of his family was created in the factory. 

At that moment, I was brutally disturbed by a man who brought me here to the White House. For many months and days, which felt like ages, I was busy thinking about the answer to my question. 

Our parents were 'Wired Landlines'! They had tails and didn't possess their own calculators, address book, world clock, fax, games calendar app, email or any modern technology we have! They just possessed the quality of being able to call. Also, he told me that they were really cheap for like the cost of 8 dollars! 

Although there was something that was still bothering me. It was not related to my family but rather a new emotion I had never felt before. It was guilt! After so many years of helping humans out, that was the day that I realised what a big sin we phones have committed! We spoiled their health, their ability to learn, find their own mistakes, and much more! Don't deny it; look at yourself! Do you go out? Do you play outdoor games? Do you have good eyesight? Do you try solving the questions? Do you keep trying until you get it right? No, the answer to all these questions is a simple NO. Now all you humans do is sit at home, play online games, and search Google for your homework questions and nowadays, children as young as 5-6 are wearing glasses!

• Gratitude - Rishona Chopra

Gratitude is to be thankful. We have so many things in our lives to be grateful for. In fact, everything we have we should be happy with! We have a home to live in,  We have goals that thrive,  We have clothes to wear, And we have the education to share!

The challenges that we face,  Are just the base, For us to become a divine soul, And reach our primary goal! This poem tells us that there are several things to thank for! Every happy and sad moment is a blessing, the tragic, challenging moments make you more resilient and mature, and the happy ones are for you to enjoy!  The food we eat is a great blessing. Not everyone is lucky to get as delicious food as us. All of us have three meals a day. They sustain and nourish us to sit, move, speak, smile, and complete tasks. It is essential to love and respect what we eat for the way food serves us. We often find ourselves grumbling or judging the food on our plates. We reject it unawares with statements like – "I'm bored of eating this every morning, This dish is so bland, I wish my mother could cook better." We also worry or feel guilty – "I might put on weight. What if my sugar levels increase? This doesn't taste fresh. I hope I won't fall sick." Once we decide to eat, let's enjoy the food, not think of its effects. Let's create thoughts of gratitude and love before and while eating. The quality or quantity may not always be perfect. Never mind – we have enjoyed (and will continue to enjoy) thousands of delicious meals. The few imperfections should not change our respect for food.

Food that we eat every day is nutrition for our body. We choose what is healthy. We can determine what is tasty, but if we say we will be happy when we eat something specific, our happiness depends on our food. Sit back, and visualize yourself happy while having your meals and radiating happy energy into your food. We often create a point of irritation when we eat something which is not tasty for us. Food may not be delicious… but happiness or irritation is our choice. Practice today to not allow your food to influence your mind. Criticizing what you eat radiates negative energy to the food, which then affects your mind. Before every meal today, pause and reaffirm, "I am happy and calm as I eat my meal. Space Highlights Of The Month Of August - Rishona Chopra

At the centre of the new Hubble image, the bright light emanating from SGAS appears as an arc or ring  around either side of the object that lies between the distant galaxy and the space telescope.  The image also captures several other galaxies and celestial objects scattered across space. Gravitational lensing also allows astronomers to observe objects that would otherwise be too far away  or too faint to be seen. The distortion caused by the foreground object acts as a natural magnifying  glass, zooming in on more distant celestial objects. The recent image of galaxy SGAS J143845+145407 was taken as part of a larger Hubble initiative to study galaxies of the early universe using  gravitational lensing to examine the galaxies up close."  The lensing reveals details of distant galaxies that would otherwise be unobtainable, allowing astronomers  to determine star formation in early galaxies," ESA officials said. "This,  in turn, gives scientists a better insight into how the overall evolution of galaxies has unfolded."

At the beginning of the month, JWST captured images of the Cartwheel galaxy. The Cartwheel,  located about 500 million light-years from Earth in the constellation Sculptor in the southern sky , is a rare type of galaxy that astronomers call a ring galaxy. Scientists believe the Cartwheel was a typical spiral galaxy long ago , similar to our Milky Way.  This galaxy formed due to a high-speed collision about 400 million years ago.  The Cartwheel comprises two rings, a bright inner ring and a colourful outer ring. Both rings expand  outward from the centre of the collision like shockwaves.  However, despite the impact, much of the character of the large, spiral galaxy that existed before the crash  remains, including its rotating arms. This leads to the "spokes" that inspired the name of the  Cartwheel Galaxy, which are the bright red streaks seen between the inner and outer rings. 

These brilliant red hues, located not only throughout the Cartwheel but also in the companion spiral galaxy at  the top left, are caused by glowing, hydrocarbon-rich dust.  In this near- and mid-infrared composite image, MIRI data are coloured red, while NIRCam data are coloured  blue, orange, and yellow.  Webb's observations capture the Cartwheel in a very transitory stage. Given these two competing forces, the form that the Cartwheel Galaxy will eventually take  is still a mystery.  Rishona Chopra Grade VI Gyanshree School

MEET THE WINNERS OF THE QUEEN'S COMMONWEALTH ESSAY COMPETITION 2022

The Queen's Commonwealth Essay Competition (QCEC) is the world's oldest international schools' writing contest, established by the Society in 1883. With thousands of young people taking part each year, it is an important way to recognise achievement, elevate youth voices and develop key skills through creative writing. 

Each year, entrants write on a theme that explores the Commonwealth's values, fostering an empathetic world view in the next generation of leaders and encouraging young people to consider new perspectives to the challenges that the world faces. Themes have included the environment, community, inclusion, the role of youth leadership, and gender equality. 

In the past decade alone, this high-profile competition has engaged approximately 140,000 young people, over 5,000 schools and thousands of volunteer judges across the Commonwealth. 

This year, the competition theme was 'Our Commonwealth', reflecting on our Patron Queen Elizabeth II's seven decades of service to the Commonwealth as an inspiring example of the steadfast commitment and important contribution we can all make to our societies.

We were thrilled to receive a record-breaking 26,322 entries to the QCEC from every Commonwealth region, with the winners and runners-up from New Zealand, Australia, the United Kingdom and India. Sawooly Li 

Senior Winner 

Age 17, New Zealand 

Sawooly Li is a 12th grade student from Rangitoto College in New Zealand. Reading and writing have always been second nature for her—a way of expressing visions, thoughts, and emotions. She loves drawing inspiration and learning from other great writers and their works. Both reading and writing are things which Sawooly aspires to continue far, far, into the future.

Sawooly also has a love for maths and physics, and is heavily involved in such areas in her school, running clubs and participating in competitions. Fostering a strong sense of community, she also leads several in-school organisations, such as UN Youth and UNICEF. In the winters, Sawooly enjoys snowboarding in New Zealand’s beautiful mountains with friends and family.

Madeleine Wood

Junior Winner 

Age 14, Australia 

Madeleine is 14 years old and lives in Melbourne, Australia. She is in grade 8 at Camberwell Girls Grammar School.

She loves travelling, particularly through Europe, and enjoys visiting the museums, historical landmarks and cities in each country. It is from these experiences that she gained a love for ancient, medieval, and renaissance history.

She is also an avid reader, plays the violin and spends much of her time playing basketball or swimming.

Amaal Fawzi

Senior Runner-up

Age 17, United Kingdom

Amaal Fawzi is a 17-year-old girl who was born in Egypt, raised in Lebanon, and now lives in East London. She has an Iraqi father and a British mother, and because of the education system in Lebanon, she has started university a year early! She studies English Literature with Creative Writing and has been writing poetry for many years, though she wouldn’t say she’s been writing poetry well for all of them.

Most of the poetry and prose she likes to write is concerned with culture and identity. Her years in Lebanon formed the majority of her character and cultural experiences, so learning to interact with that in the UK has been a very interesting season. It makes for a lot of writing material, and she’d say that the way she writes is always personal and drawn somehow from her own life.

Maulika Pandey

Junior  Runner-up

Age 13, India

Maulika Pandey, is an 8th grade student from Aurum the Global School.

She has always enjoyed writing since she was a child as she feels writing gives her the power to express her feelings in a creative way. Maulika also enjoys sketching and playing the guitar. Basketball is her favourite sport.

She aspires to be a successful entrepreneur but will definitely continue writing in the future.

She is a dedicated advocate for anti-bullying and body positivity.

2022 JASNA Essay Contest Winners Published

October 12, 2022

The winning entries in JASNA’s 2022 Essay Contest have been published online, and we invite you to  read the outstanding essays submitted by the students who received top honors. A list of the students awarded  Honorable Mention  is also posted online. 

This year we received submissions from high school, college, and graduate school students in the United States,  Canada, and 16 other countries: Brazil, China, Denmark, Germany, Honduras, India, Japan, Malaysia,  the Philippines, Poland, Romania, South Korea , Turkey,  Uzbekistan, the United Kingdom, and Vietnam. One of the high school winners is from the Philippines.

The 2022 essay topic focused on Austen’s first published novel, Sense and Sensibility . Family relations loom large in this novel, and students were asked to discuss the relationships between siblings or pairs of siblings, between mothers and their offspring, or the characteristics embodied by a related or unrelated pair.

Graduate School Division      

• First Place:   Susan E. Matassa "Rectifying an Ignorance of the World: The Critique of Social Silence in Austen’s  Sense and Sensibility"
• Second Place:   Haleigh Yaspan "Marriage and Marriageability: A Linguistic Study of Mrs. Dashwood and Mrs. Jennings"
• Third Place (Tied):   Mary Kroner "Christian Ethics in the Dashwood Family: An Exploration of the Effects of Elinor’s Prudence on Marianne"
• Third Place (Tied):   Amanda M. MacMurtrie "Fates and Fortunes: The Role of the Protector in Achieving a Happy Ending in Austen’s  Sense and Sensibility "

You can read the winning essays   here . The entries were evaluated in two rounds by 27 judges, and the top 3 essays in each division were selected for scholarship awards. This year, we have ten winners due to a tie for third place in the Graduate Division.  The first-place winners were also invited to attend JASNA's 2022 Annual General Meeting in Victoria, BC.

Congratulations to the 2022 winners, and many thanks to all the contest participants and judges!

JASNA sponsors the Essay Contest each year to foster the study and appreciation of Jane Austen's works in new generations of readers. The 2023 contest topic and rules will be published in November 2022 , and we will begin accepting submissions in February 2023.

Answer: Few people considered newspapers less important nowadays but others do differ with the statement In present world the demand of newspapers are declined as the people are more tend towards news and updates from internet and they focus least on hands-on paper as they found them of no use as the same stuff is available through internet (in the form of online newspaper).On the other hand people do have collection of newspaper piled up and they found them of no use. People are now well thought out that newspaper printing is useless and waste of resources; above mention are the views of few people not everyone. Moreover other people agree with the fact that reading newspaper online is better than collecting and piling them at home but they also don’t let the fact go away that continuously reading newspaper online may affect the eyes and it may create eyesight disease. After mentioning few general public views about newspaper I will proceed further along with the advantages of newspapers ,Firstly newspapers consists of interesting articles and write-ups that provides vast knowledge ,Secondly we can improve reading skills ,grammar vocabulary and speaking power too. Old newspapers can be used in projects by students in the form of recycle material as an example of solid waste management. I will conclude by saying that newspaper is less important for few people but for other people it is still very useful nowadays.

There are topics, not questions. As long as you can prepare ideas for topics, you can adapt them to any type of essay.

Hello Liz, I just gave a mock writing test and it deducted my band score by 1 for using a clichés which was ‘a waste of time’. Will the same happen in the real test? Can you give a list of other clichés which we cannot use in the test [ apart from the ones given on the site ].

I’m not sure precisely the expressions you use as you mention only one. The expression “a waste of time” is completely fine to use in any Writing Task 2 essay. It is idiomatic, suitable for formal writing and good to use.

Prize –  Jury will decide three awards based on the quality of the content.

Essay competition registration.

Up to 15 US$500 awards will be made in February 2025 for the top-ranked essays answering this year's essay question:

    How can laws regulating climate change and the environment support economic development?

Eligible students (students with both citizenship and current enrolment in a registered academic program with at least one law class in one of the countries listed on the Home page) are to register below by 31 October 2024; essays will be accepted from registered candidates between 1-31 December 2024 (no extensions). Essays must be in compliance with competition rules (see below ) and will not be accepted from unregistered candidates or after 31 December 2024.

Note that awards may be payable to the winner's educational institution on his/her behalf and not to the winning student directly. Funds received may also be less any necessary bank conversion fees and/or taxes. Lex:lead will never charge a fee to participate. A  Certificate of Participation  will be sent to all registered candidates who submit an essay by 31 December 2024.

Reserved funding 2024:

• DLA Piper award for the highest-ranked winner from an eligible Asian country

Uba ghana launches 2022 national essay competition.

The United Bank for Africa (UBA) Ghana Limited has launched the 9th edition of the UBA Foundation’s National Essay Competition in Accra.

The Managing Director and CEO of UBA Ghana, Chris Ofikulu stated that the competition which started in 2014 is a follow-up on the Read Africa project.

Read Africa gives books to schools and communities to inculcate the habit of reading among the youth in Africa.

Chris Ofikulu noted “the National Essay Competition has grown to be the best initiative that allows every Secondary School student to exhibit their cognitive skills and potential while developing positive problem-solving and critical reasoning skills. The National Essay Competition is one of our stunning initiatives to support the Government of Ghana in developing the youths in Ghana to which we will forever pledge our full commitment”.

The Managing Director added that, so far, 24 students have benefitted from the scholarships awarded by the UBA Foundation through the National Essay Competition.

Speaking at the launch, the Director of the Schools and Instructions Division, Mrs. Patty Assan noted that it is universally acknowledged that education is an investment in human capital.  It is considered the principal instrument for the acquisition of the requisite knowledge, skills, values, and attitudes for improving the overall levels of efficiency, productivity, and technical and managerial performance of the labour force.

She praised UBA for the choice of the essay topic for this year as the world continues to battle the consequences of sports betting among the youth particularly, under-aged students.

"I will be interested in the winning Essay and to see some of the innovative ideas from the students. This would further augment what we are doing in partnership with other agencies to deal with this matter".

The launch which took place at the Presbyterian Boys Senior High School (PRESEC), Legon saw other schools like Achimota School, Accra Girls Senior High School, and West Africa Senior High School attending.

The current champion, Augustina Yohunu Amanor from the Ghana Senior High School, Koforidua expressed her excitement at winning the ultimate prize in the 2021 edition and encouraged all students present to take advantage of the competition to participate.

She also noted that this could further improve their writing skills and help them become better students.

The topic for the 2022 UBA National Essay Competition is “Write an essay on Sports Betting has become rampant amongst the youths in the country. What can the Ministry of Youth and Sports and the Gaming Commission do to regulate the activities of under-aged persons participating in sports betting”.

The deadline for submission is Friday, November 11, 2022. Entries can be submitted through the UBA website www.ubaghana.com or dropped off at any UBA Branch countrywide.

UBA Foundation is the Corporate Social Responsibility wing of the Bank that supports the community and gives back to society as a good corporate citizen.

The foundation focuses on three main areas – Education, Environment, and Empowerment.
