A Harvard in-text citation should appear in brackets every time you quote, paraphrase, or refer to information from a source.

The citation can appear immediately after the quotation or paraphrase, or at the end of the sentence. If you’re quoting, place the citation outside of the quotation marks but before any other punctuation like a comma or full stop.

In Harvard referencing, up to three author names are included in an in-text citation or reference list entry. When there are four or more authors, include only the first, followed by ‘ et al. ’

A bibliography should always contain every source you cited in your text. Sometimes a bibliography also contains other sources that you used in your research, but did not cite in the text.

MHRA doesn’t specify a rule about this, so check with your supervisor to find out exactly what should be included in your bibliography.

Footnote numbers should appear in superscript (e.g. 11 ). You can use the ‘Insert footnote’ button in Word to do this automatically; it’s in the ‘References’ tab at the top.

Footnotes always appear after the quote or paraphrase they relate to. MHRA generally recommends placing footnote numbers at the end of the sentence, immediately after any closing punctuation, like this. 12

In situations where this might be awkward or misleading, such as a long sentence containing multiple quotations, footnotes can also be placed at the end of a clause mid-sentence, like this; 13 note that they still come after any punctuation.

When a source has two or three authors, name all of them in your MHRA references . When there are four or more, use only the first name, followed by ‘and others’:

Note that in the bibliography, only the author listed first has their name inverted. The names of additional authors and those of translators or editors are written normally.

A citation should appear wherever you use information or ideas from a source, whether by quoting or paraphrasing its content.

In Vancouver style , you have some flexibility about where the citation number appears in the sentence – usually directly after mentioning the author’s name is best, but simply placing it at the end of the sentence is an acceptable alternative, as long as it’s clear what it relates to.

In Vancouver style , when you refer to a source with multiple authors in your text, you should only name the first author followed by ‘et al.’. This applies even when there are only two authors.

Dissertation word counts vary widely across different fields, institutions, and levels of education:

  • An undergraduate dissertation is typically 8,000–15,000 words
  • A master’s dissertation is typically 12,000–50,000 words
  • A PhD thesis is typically book-length: 70,000–100,000 words

However, none of these are strict guidelines – your word count may be lower or higher than the numbers stated here. Always check the guidelines provided by your university to determine how long your own dissertation should be.

References should be included in your text whenever you use words, ideas, or information from a source. A source can be anything from a book or journal article to a website or YouTube video.

If you don’t acknowledge your sources, you can get in trouble for plagiarism .

Your university should tell you which referencing style to follow. If you’re unsure, check with a supervisor. Commonly used styles include:

Add ‘a’ to the first one you cite, ‘b’ to the second, and so on. Do the same in your bibliography or reference list .

To create a hanging indent for your bibliography or reference list :

  • Highlight all the entries

  • Then close the window with ‘OK’.

Though the terms are sometimes used interchangeably, there is a difference in meaning:

  • A reference list only includes sources cited in the text – every entry corresponds to an in-text citation .
  • A bibliography also includes other sources which were consulted during the research but not cited.

For text-based sources, you can use paragraph numbers (e.g. ‘para. 4’) or headings (e.g. ‘under “Methodology”’). With video or audio sources, use a timestamp (e.g. ‘10:15’).

In the acknowledgements of your thesis or dissertation, you should first thank those who helped you academically or professionally, such as your supervisor, funders, and other academics.

Then you can include personal thanks to friends, family members, or anyone else who supported you during the process.

The opposite of the hasty generalization fallacy is called slothful induction fallacy or appeal to coincidence .

It is the tendency to deny a conclusion even though there is sufficient evidence that supports it. Slothful induction occurs due to our natural tendency to dismiss events or facts that do not align with our personal biases and expectations. For example, a researcher may try to explain away unexpected results by claiming it is just a coincidence.

To avoid a hasty generalization fallacy we need to ensure that the conclusions drawn are well-supported by the appropriate evidence. More specifically:

  • In statistics , if we want to draw inferences about an entire population, we need to make sure that the sample is random and representative of the population . We can achieve that by using a probability sampling method , like simple random sampling or stratified sampling .

Although many sources use circular reasoning fallacy and begging the question interchangeably, others point out that there is a subtle difference between the two:

  • Begging the question fallacy occurs when you assume that an argument is true in order to justify a conclusion. If something begs the question, what you are actually asking is, “Is the premise of that argument actually true?” For example, the statement “Snakes make great pets. That’s why we should get a snake” begs the question “are snakes really great pets?”
  • Circular reasoning fallacy on the other hand, occurs when the evidence used to support a claim is just a repetition of the claim itself.  For example, “People have free will because they can choose what to do.”

In other words, we could say begging the question is a form of circular reasoning.

Circular reasoning fallacy uses circular reasoning to support an argument. More specifically, the evidence used to support a claim is just a repetition of the claim itself. For example: “The President of the United States is a good leader (claim), because they are the leader of this country (supporting evidence)”.

An example of a non sequitur is the following statement:

“Giving up nuclear weapons weakened the United States’ military. Giving up nuclear weapons also weakened China. For this reason, it is wrong to try to outlaw firearms in the United States today.”

Clearly there is a step missing in this line of reasoning and the conclusion does not follow from the premise, resulting in a non sequitur fallacy .

The difference between the post hoc fallacy and the non sequitur fallacy is that post hoc fallacy infers a causal connection between two events where none exists, whereas the non sequitur fallacy infers a conclusion that lacks a logical connection to the premise.

In other words, a post hoc fallacy occurs when there is a lack of a cause-and-effect relationship, while a non sequitur fallacy occurs when there is a lack of logical connection.

An example of post hoc fallacy is the following line of reasoning:

“Yesterday I had ice cream, and today I have a terrible stomachache. I’m sure the ice cream caused this.”

Although it is possible that the ice cream had something to do with the stomachache, there is no proof to justify the conclusion other than the order of events. Therefore, this line of reasoning is fallacious.

Post hoc fallacy and hasty generalisation fallacy are similar in that they both involve jumping to conclusions. However, there is a difference between the two:

  • Post hoc fallacy is assuming a cause and effect relationship between two events, simply because one happened after the other.

In advertising, the fallacy of equivocation is often used to create a pun. For example, a billboard company might advertise their billboards using a line like: “Looking for a sign? This is it!” The word sign has a literal meaning as billboard and a figurative one as a sign from God, the universe, etc.

Equivocation is a fallacy because it is a form of argumentation that is both misleading and logically unsound. When the meaning of a word or phrase shifts in the course of an argument, it causes confusion and also implies that the conclusion (which may be true) does not follow from the premise.

The fallacy of equivocation is an informal logical fallacy, meaning that the error lies in the content of the argument instead of the structure.

“ No true Scotsman ” arguments aren’t always fallacious. When there is a generally accepted definition of who or what constitutes a group, it’s reasonable to use statements in the form of “no true Scotsman”.

For example, the statement that “no true pacifist would volunteer for military service” is not fallacious, since a pacifist is, by definition, someone who opposes war or violence as a means of settling disputes.

The length of a dissertation will vary based on a bunch of factors. For the sake of discussion, let’s say the average dissertation is 200 pages (not including references). Now that we’ve discussed writing speed and schedules, let’s talk about creating mini goals to inform the writing process. These goals must be specific and time-based in order to be effective. Let’s use the literature review as an example. Rather than say “I’m going to finish my literature review over the summer,” you should create a list of specific mini goals. First, create an outline for the literature review. Let’s say your outline consists of an introduction, search strategy, and conceptual framework, followed by the actual literature review (arranged into eight main sections). Let’s also assume each month is about four weeks long. Looking at big picture, let’s divide this work across the three months in your summer term. I created a goal calendar for each month for this example:

Once again, there are many variables to consider, but 1 year is a reasonable window for completion (from start to finish!). If you’re at the beginning of your journey, look at your big picture goals for completion and then set deadlines for each of the following main benchmarks:

The keys to speedy dissertation writing

Beyond scheduling and goal-setting, you can speed up your dissertation journey by eliminating time wasters and distractions. Reflect on the things that are your writing kryptonite (smartphone nearby, social media, etc.) and minimize those distractions. You can also speed up your dissertation journey by minimizing your revisions for each chapter. This process will involve revisions, but you can minimize them by making sure your writing is polished before each submission.

Finally – get organized. Beyond your writing schedule, make sure your physical writing environment is organized. Keep your desk clutter free so your writing space doesn’t feel chaotic. Also, keep your electronic files organized (have a system for storing and organizing your articles, references, and submissions for each chapter).

Final word: Why a rush job is a bad idea

Rushing yourself through the dissertation is a bad idea that will most likely result in frustration and may even prolong the process. Be aggressive but realistic about the timeline you create for yourself. If you need to move the finish line a little further out, do it. Your dissertation is due in about 14 days. It’s 8,000 to 10,000 words long assignment and you haven’t written even a single word yet.

You know you should have started sooner, but the year has been quite tough for you. What do you do? Is two weeks even enough to write a dissertation this long?

You can write and complete a dissertation in two weeks if you dedicate yourself to working on it every day. Provided you’ve done your research and you already know what you want to talk about, it should be easy to put the words down.

You don’t have to fret if you seem already late with the project.

Sometimes being paranoid and scared of what would happen now that you’re running out of time can easily result in a writer’s block ,  which can make it even more difficult to complete your work.

In this guide, we give you some tips that you can use to complete your dissertation in just 14 days.

How to Write a Dissertation in 14 Days

1. start with proper planning.

The best way to write a comprehensive dissertation in two weeks is to write down a plan first.

Students who write 2,000 words in one sitting do so because they’ve mapped out their plans in a way that allows them to achieve such major milestones.

In your plan, determine what you need to include in the assignment, the right order to include them, and the number of words for each section.

Spend at most 4 days doing further research and reading, and then the next 5 to 7 days writing 1,000 to 2,000 words a day.

Make sure you’re sticking to the plan from the first to the very last day. Two weeks is a short time, so you can’t have time for procrastination in your plan.

With a high degree of discipline, it should be easy for you to use the plan to write the entire dissertation within the limited period.

2. Write Every Day and In Bits

The golden rule to getting a 10,000 to a 15,000-word dissertation completed in just 14 days or less is to write every day and do so in bits.

Rather than trying to write 4,000 words or more once, try to limit yourself to completing 2,000 words a day without fail.

You will need effective study habits   to get this done in good time. That means writing in a space free from distraction so you can meet your daily target.

If you can’t focus in your room, for example, go to the park, local library, or school library and write from there.

If your director or supervisor expects you to complete a 10,000-word dissertation, and you limit yourself to writing 2,000 words a day, you’ll finish writing in just 5 days.

That means you’ll have at least another full week to proofread, edit, and crosscheck your work for clarity, authenticity, and comprehensiveness.

There are days when you won’t hit the 2,000 words mark, and that’s completely fine, especially if you can write half that word limit.

The key thing here is to develop the habit of writing every day and, in the end, still have enough time left to do your editing. 

3. Write Section by Section

Two weeks is a limited time to write a dissertation fast. So you have to lay the foundation early after research to complete the project in good time.

Lay out each section and heading of the assignment, starting with the question, followed by objectives, and then the layout.

The layout of your dissertation should be as follows, exactly in the order presented below:

  • Discussion and analysis

I can't write my Masters dissertation and it's due in 2 weeks, in despair over it

Sorry defer prob wrong word in this context, head full of A levels students making uni choices. What I mean is if they even let me take a break I think I'd have to take a full year so basically delay everything by 2 years not 1. I don't think I could re join next year.

You poor thing. Maybe don't make a decision on deferring yet. You sound lile you're panicking and looking for a quick fix. I think you just need to start writing ideas down on a plain piece of paper (set a timer for 3 mins as the pressure might help you focus). Then just start. It's because it's so huge it seems daunting but (and this is my Dad's saying), just take one bite of the elephant... then you've started. Very best of luck.

I’d ask for the extension, you could do it in three weeks. What is the word limit? The best way to tackle a large project like this is to break it in to chunks. Don’t look it as an entire piece until near the end.

  • Plan out sections - then do subsections.
  • Try and write an outline for each section.
  • When you are really tired fix the layout and do the references, you will be shattered by the end so if you have this finished in advance you will cry tears of joy.
  • Remember a good thesis is a finished thesis. Do the best you can, take each day as it comes.

Hello OP. I don't know if it helps but when I'm struggling is to write against a timer. For example, in 45 minute sections. I often find thoughts are coming and the flow of writing has started. Before you start, can you section the work and spend an hour making bullet points for each section. It may be worth spending a greater proportion of your time on the sections with greatest weighting. Turn your phone onto flight mode so you are not disturbed. Good Luck!

How many words and what sort of project? Is there anything you can reuse from your proposal, if you did one? Two weeks is totally doable if you’ve done the actual work and all that’s left is to write it up. My advice is to have a large glass of wine and start typing away at whatever section is the easiest. Editing and refining can come later but I think it’ll get you in a better mindset if you get something down.

University lecturer here – I've supervised a number of students through difficult dissertations. and when I was younger, I also struggled with not being able to complete/submit written assignments. My key advice is: don't try to get it right, just get writing. The point isn't to write something you're proud of, it's to get the words on the page. If after that you have the time and the energy to turn those words into something better, then do so. But first just throw a bunch of words on the page so you have a first draft. Don't think or worry about the quality, just type. The point of the first draft is to get words on a page. Everything follows from that. Good luck!

You can do it in 2 weeks if you have done the actual research? What type of dissertation is it? Topic? The hardest part is starting typing. I bet once you start it will all flow.

Go and talk to your university, ask for a defferal, take the pressure off yourself. Take 48 hours, sleep look after yourself don't think about it. Structure is everything in a dissertation. Do you have a well defined research question? At the end of the day that is all you are trying to answer. So; Introduction and literature review, what are you doing, why is this important, what has been done before, what is the gap in the research. How does your dissertation fit into this. Research, what approach are you taking, why is this appropriate, how can you be sure your results will be valid, triangulation etc, what are the limitations to your approach, what could you do about those, what was outside of your control Results, what have you found out Discussion- Answer your research question? How do your findings relate back to the previous research in the literature review, what do you recommend, where should research go next? Maybe you can't answer the question, fine say that. What else would be needed?? Summary and Conclusion If you have done the research then you will have plenty to say. Just try bullet points to start with, get the structure right then just pad it out. Just be really clear on your research question to start with. You can do this.

I strongly agree with riotlady's advice to make wine your friend. Whenever I was struggling with my PhD thesis, I poured myself a very large glass of wine, took a huge sip, and just started typing. Work your way through half a bottle of wine, type the entire time, and make a judgement later about the quality. But just get typing (and drinking). During the PhD years, I tried as much as possible to take advantage of the reduced inhibitions that came from drinking. For example, if I felt a little bit tipsy in the evening I would sneak off to my computer and bash out a few paragraphs, not worrying about the quality but just trying to get words on the page. My motto was: might as well do this when I'm drunk, otherwise I'll have to do it when I'm sober.

Extension is a good idea rather than deferring. You are probably trying to write a great dissertation (obviously why wouldn’t you!) but this is where you get into the ‘perfection is the enemy of good’ territory. It is so much easier to edit and rewrite pieces. So just write a crappy version of your dissertation in the coming week and then have 2 weeks editing and rewriting. Why sort of length are you thinking it will be?

You can absolutely do this. Get the weeks extension. Then plan, plan, plan. What is your argument? What’s the best structure? Map that all out before you start. Them set yourself a word limit/sections to be covered everyday and stick to that rigidly. I agree with a PP, don’t aim for perfection. That will paralyse you. Words on a page, polish later (build in that time). Aim for 100% done at 60/70% of the quality you’d like. This is much better than the other way around.

You can do it! As PPs have said if you know what you want to say and you've done the research the actual writing up is very very possible in the amount of time you have. I wrote the last third of mine on the day it was due in and got a distinction for it, and if I can do it so can you. The key is to stop worrying about structure and footnotes and just get something down on paper. What do you think? Why do you think it? What other ideas did you consider and reject? Don't worry about tidying it up for now, just get it written down straight from what's in your head, no notes.

Need to read posts properly but see a few people have asked how many words, it's 10 thousand words. Confidence is shot as I did the sitting down and banging out a chapter before and my supervisor made it clear it didn't cut the mustard so I think part of it is I just feel embarrassed by my own ideas and opinions which is really unhelpful. Supervisor is a kind person and we get on quite well so wasn't trying to be spiteful either.

My PhD supervisor swore by writing with bottle of whiskey to hand. It wouldn’t have worked for me (I would have just fallen asleep) but I can see why it’s helpful for some.

Firstly - deep breath, it's gonna be OK. A dissertation is a massive undertaking and anyone that has written one, would have had the same moments of absolute terror and panic. Good news, you have over two weeks! The way it was suggested to me - I'm guessing you already have a topic? I'm also going to assume that you've done most of the reading/literature reviews (what others had said)? In that case, congratulations, you have already done more than you probably expected. In a 8000 word dissertation, around 1000 will be your intro, 3000 your literature review, then you findings/the main bit 3000 and finally a 1000 conclusion. Write your conclusion first - what have you concluded as a result of doing the research? Now write the introduction, what are you going to try and prove? As you have already written the conclusion, you should find that your intro tailors itself back to your conclusion automatically. Now the literature review - what have others said about your hypothesis? So all you now have to do is the middle 3000 bit, which is the research you would have done towards the hypothesis. You can probably do this in just over a week. That gives you a couple of days to then put it away completely. Then it's time to review and edit. Contrary to belief, a Masters doesn't have to be full of long words. As long as it reads well, makes sense and answers your question. And remember - absolute worse, If you have already completed 120 Masters credits (which again I am assuming as you are at the dissertation stage) - it means you could, even now, exit with a Post Graduate Diploma. You are gonna be OK.

Have I done the research? Honestly, I don't even know. I've read so much stuff. Sometimes I think I've understood and have those moments of YES! That really helps me argue my point! Then sadly a lot of the time I read stuff, have to read several times because my brain is so slow and still feel I haven't grasped what the writer is on about. I just feel so thick.

OP have you done the research? If it's just the writing up (and I know, it's not 'just') and you could get an extension, it's doable. Other posters have given good advice. I'm a bit surprised tho - what have you been working on with your supervisor? You mention writing one draft chapter? Is that all the supervisor has seen? Anyway .. I assume you have a lit review done from earlier in the year? So that's one part of the process done. I would then decide on a structure for each section / chapter. What I'd then focus on is the research element. Did you interview people? Do surveys? Focus groups? Primary research? Whatever original research you did, write it up now. Like a pp said, don't worry about style / being perfect, get it on paper Make an appointment ASAP with your supervisor and be really honest about where you are at. Get their advice. Also consult your university's library web site and check what guides they have on researching & writing, ditto university's Writing Centre. This is my area of work and most of these guides are very practical and will give you direct steps to take. If you haven't done original research and in-depth reading - re-consider submitting your thesis and consider taking a Grad Dip / PG Dip Instead. There's no point in submitting rubbish for the sake of it. Good luck 💐

Sorry cross post! When I asked about research though, I mean original research, not reading. For example, interviews / surveys / gathering data / consulting primary sources. This is distinguishes a thesis from a long essay.

You can do it!! I feel the same, am on 11000 of 15000 and am struggling. But set little writing goals and rewards for doing 200 words (cup of tea , 5 minute wander around). Keep to what you want to say and just get it down. They can’t mark nothing but will give credit for what is there. If they accepted you onto a masters course then you have the ability. Just go for it!

My approach when I have writers block like this is to put each idea on a notecard. The smaller the ideas the better, but they don’t all have to be the same. You might have things like Law passed 1973 is relevant Talk about the social implications of x and maybe link it to y Make sure to mention that J is important Then once you have all those pieces floating around in your head written down, you can start shuffling cards until you can start to see an outline If you have done your prep, you can finish this in two weeks and especially three. You just have to find some way to start. I like my notecards, other people like to just type freeform, wine can help (but only for the first draft).

How long does it take to write a dissertation? The most accurate (and least helpful) answer is, it depends. Since that’s probably not the answer you’re looking for, I’ll use the rest of the article to address the realities of how long it takes to write a dissertation.

How Long Does It Take to Write a Dissertation?

Based on my experience, writing your dissertation should take somewhere between 13-20 months. These are average numbers based upon the scores of doctoral students that I have worked with over the years, and they generally hold true.

I have seen people take less time and more time, but I believe that with concerted effort, the 13-20 month timeframe is reasonable.

University Requirements

Once you hit the dissertation stage, some schools require a minimum number of hours in the dissertation area before you can graduate. Many schools require the equivalent of one year of dissertation credits to graduate. 

So, even if you can finish your dissertation in three months, you will still have to pay for nine more months of dissertation credits before you can graduate. However, unless research and writing is your superpower, I wouldn’t worry about having to pay extra tuition.

But this requirement does offer some insight into how long it takes to write a dissertation. Based on this requirement, it’s reasonable to expect that writing your dissertation will take a year of more. This is consistent with my experience.

However, this timeframe is based on several assumptions. First, I am assuming that you are continually working towards finishing your dissertation. This means that no family emergencies, funding conundrums, or work issues get in the way of completing. Second, there are no major changes in your dissertation committee. Third, you will have access to the data that you need. 

Assuming these assumptions hold true, this article should give you a general idea of how long it might take to write your dissertation.

How Long Does it Take to Write A Dissertation? Stage-By-Stage

Let’s break down each stage of the dissertation writing process and how long it takes. 

Prospectus 

This is the hardest one to judge, as this is where you lay the groundwork for the rest of your dissertation and get buy-in from committee members. Normally this takes from 3-6 months. Not all of this is writing time, though–much of it is spent refining your topic and your approach.

Why does this stage take so long? For many people, starting to express themselves using an academic voice can take time. This can hold up the review process as your committee members ask for writing-related revisions before they even get to evaluating the content. Don’t worry, once you learn the academic language things will start to flow more easily.

One common mistake students make is lack of specificity, both in their writing in general and in their topic focus. 

Proposal (Chapters 1-3)

Chapter 1 is often an expansion of your Prospectus. However, you’ll be expected to develop your ideas more and have even more specificity on things like your research question and methodology, so don’t underestimate how long this chapter will take.

Chapter 2 can take some time as you will be digging deep into the literature but I think this can be done in 3-4 months. One caution, some people, and committees, like to start with Chapter 2 so that you are immersed in the literature before completing Chapters 1 and 3. Regardless of where you start, 3-4 months is a good estimate.

Chapter 3 requires an in-depth explanation of your methodology. I suggest working closely with your Chair on this one to avoid multiple submissions and revisions. Get clear on your methodology and make sure you and your chair are on the same page before you write, and continue to check in with your chair, if possible, throughout the process.

IRB Approval

While this step can be full of details and require several iterations it seems that allowing 2 months is sufficient. Most schools have an IRB form that must be submitted. To save time you can usually start filling out the form while your committee is reviewing your Proposal.

Collecting Data

This step varies a great deal. If you are using readily available secondary data this can take a week but if you are interviewing hard to get individuals or have trouble finding a sufficient number of people for your sample this can take 4 months or more. I think 1-4 months should be appropriate

Chapters 4 and 5

These two chapters are the easiest to write as in Chapter 4 you are reporting your results and in Chapter 5 you explain what the results mean. I believe that these two chapters can be written in 2 months.

Defense and Completion

You will need to defend your dissertation and then go through all of the university requirements to finalize the completion of your dissertation. I would allow 2 months for this process.

Variables That Affect How Long It Takes to Write A Dissertation 

When students say something like, “I’m going to finish my dissertation in three months,” they likely aren’t considering all of the variables besides the actual writing. Even if you’re a fast writer, you’ll have to wait on your committee’s comments, 

Timing Issues

Many schools have response times for committee members. This is important when looking at how long it takes to finish a dissertation. For example, it you have two committee members and they each get up to 2 weeks for a review, it can take up to a month to get a document reviewed, each time you submit. So, plan for these periods of time when thinking about how long that it will take you.

Addressing Comments

How long it takes to write your dissertation also depends on your ability to address your committee’s comments thoroughly. It’s not uncommon for a committee member to send a draft back several times, even if their comments were addressed adequately, because they notice new issues each time they read it. Save yourself considerable time by making sure you address their comments fully, thus avoiding unnecessary time waiting to hear the same feedback.

This is the biggest variable in the dissertation model. How dedicated are you to the process? How much actual time do you have? How many outside interests/requirements do you have? Are you easily distracted? How clean does your workspace need to be? (This may seem like a strange thing to discuss, but many people need to work in a clean space and can get very interested in cleaning if they have to write). Are you in a full-time program or in a part time program? Are you holding down a job? Do you have children? 

All of these things will affect how much time you have to put into writing–or rather, how disciplined you need to be about making time to write.

One of the things that can influence how long it takes to write your dissertation is your committee. Choose your committee wisely. If you work under the assumption that the only good dissertation is a done dissertation, then you want a committee that will be helpful and not trying to prove themselves on your back. When you find a Chair that you can work with ask her/him which of their colleagues they work well with (it’s also worth finding out who they don’t work well with).

Find out how they like to receive material to review. Some members like to see pieces of chapters and some like to see completed documents. Once you know their preferences, you can efficiently submit what they want when they want it.

How Long Does it Take to Write a Dissertation? Summary

Barring unforeseen events, the normal time range for finishing a dissertation seems to be 13-19 months, which can be rounded to one to one and a half years. If you are proactive and efficient, you can usually be at the shorter end of the time range.

That means using downtime to do things like changing the tense of your approved Proposal from future tense to past tense and completing things like you Abstract and Acknowledgement sections before final approval.

I hope that you can be efficient in this process and finish as quickly as possible. Remember, “the only good dissertation is a done dissertation.”

This is a common question, as is “How long does it take to write a 7,000-word dissertation?” There is no figure in hours or days that answers this; it differs for everyone.  “Is it possible to write a 10,000-word dissertation in two days?” Well, yes. But you will only find out if you can do it when the two days are up. You need to get started immediately, follow our advice and use our dissertation guides . But we are not claiming it’s easy.

Preparing to Write your Dissertation Fast

You need to prepare well; normal life can be suspended for the time you will spend working. The first preparations to make concern you and where you are going to work.

Distractions and Interruptions

Turn off your phone and avoid TV. If you are really serious, you will really do it. When you procrastinate or allow yourself to be distracted, what do you do? Gaming? Staring out of the window? Baking? Make these things difficult or impossible to do. Be aware of something called productive procrastination. This is when you do something productive but it’s not what you are meant to be doing. Do not mistake activity for productivity. When you find yourself vacuuming around your desk, snap out of it.

Some people can work with music playing, and some need silence. Listening to words, whether sung or spoken, can distract you when producing text. If there is something that will help you, such as instrumental music, use it. Make sure everyone knows what you are doing and ask them to leave you alone (except for bringing you food and drinks). Can someone else handle your duties and obligations for a while?

Create a Work Area

Set up a workplace and de-clutter it. Remove irrelevant books and anything you can fiddle with. Gather all your materials: this means textbooks, notes on paper and in digital form. Your research is likely over, but you will need everything to hand.

Give all materials specific places and keep them there. As you use them, you will remember where they are. Putting them down in different places will mean time lost looking for them, which will add frustration to the work.

Do All of your Legwork Before Starting

Getting up and walking away from the desk unnecessarily uses time you do not have. Do not let shopping trips interrupt your work. If you do not have enough food and supplies in before starting, get them first. Certain foods/snacks can help get you through, maybe you can suspend your usual health regime for a while. You need to feel comfortable in this. But do not overdo the caffeine or sugar .

Make a Work Schedule

Look ahead at your available time and make a schedule. If you work 21 hours on the first day, you might find yourself burnt out the next day. Sleep when you have to, work when you feel good. How long can you realistically work each day? Be careful not to create an unrealistic schedule, you will not keep up to it and will become demoralised. Remember that writing the dissertation is only 1% of your entire course; it is acceptable to get help at this late stage.

Where to Start

Start here – write an outline.

As well as a work schedule, you need a dissertation structure . You may be tempted to think that making an outline for your dissertation is extra work, that it would be quicker to just start writing. That would be like going on a driving tour to every European country with no plan. Without regular destinations, you will drift about aimlessly.

You can save time by focussing only on the main parts of the dissertation. If you run out of time, it will be better if the parts not completed are the less significant ones, although ideally nothing should be left unfinished. This is an exercise in prioritisation: Write the most valuable, points-scoring parts first.

Sacrifices May be Necessary

With a tight time limit, you might have to make sacrifices. People with the luxury of time will spend a day or more on just the table of contents or references section . You might not have this option. The focus has to be on the rapid production of text and its quality; things like detailed formatting and page layout will be secondary.

Prioritising your Order of Work

In the detailed plan below, skip the greyed-out parts to start with. You can use this to create an outline by adding a note under each part of the different sections stating what you are going to include there. This is where the job starts to appear less daunting; 10,000 now becomes 2,000 for this section, 1,000 for that section… The mountain becomes a set of smaller hills. And the introduction section can be written after the body, it is easier and quicker that way.

Writing the Dissertation Body

When you have an outline, you need to put some meat on those bones and build a body. Working from start to finish may be best (skipping the introduction), but the order you work in is your choice. If your notes are not in order, a quick way to identify notes that apply to the different sections is to mark them with different coloured highlighters as in the table above. This will draw your eyes to the relevant notes quickly. You can do this on your computer screen by highlighting similarly.

After the main body, the introduction is next. This will be easier to write because all the information will be fresh in your mind. What next? The appendices or the parts at the front? This should be your decision based on remaining time.

Ignore spelling and grammar.

Do not pay attention to spelling, grammar, and language rules at this stage. Attending to spelling and grammatical details as you work will distract you and spoil your flow. Spelling and grammatical mistakes do not matter in a work in progress. You can turn checking functions off until you reach the editing and proofreading stage. Concentrate only on writing up your notes, do not switch between tasks.

Attend to One Part of the Dissertation at a Time

Have a Strict but Simple Method of Noting Sources

Every time you quote or paraphrase something, note the source. Use a simple referencing technique while writing that does not demand much time. One such method is for the first in-text reference, just put (1) after the quote, use (2) for the second and so on. Start a list of sources that correspond to each number. You could highlight the numbers in a specific colour so you can attend to them later and not miss any. Missing just one reference, even accidentally, will still count as plagiarism . Google just updated its algorithm. The Internet will never be the same

Over the last two years, a series of updates to Google Search amount to a dramatic upheaval to the Internet's most powerful tool, complete with an unprecedented AI feature. Will Google save the web, or destroy it?

If you've ever typed "air purifier reviews" into Google, you were probably looking for the kind of content you'll find on HouseFresh.com . The site was started in 2020 by Gisele Navarro and her husband, based on a decade of experience writing about indoor air quality products. They filled their basement with purifiers, running rigorous science-based tests and writing articles to help consumers sort through marketing hype.

HouseFresh is an example of what has been a flourishing industry of independent publishers producing exactly the sort of original content Google says it wants to promote . And indeed, soon after the website's launch, the tech giant started showing HouseFresh at the top of search results. The website grew into a thriving business with 15 full-time employees. Navarro had big plans for the future.

Then, in September 2023, Google made one in a series of major updates to the algorithm that runs its search engine.

"It decimated us," Navarro says. "Suddenly the search terms that used to bring up HouseFresh were sending people to big lifestyle magazines that clearly don't even test the products. The articles are full of information that I know is wrong."

The second Google algorithm update came in March, and it was even more punishing. HouseFresh's thousands of daily visitors dwindled to just hundreds. "We just got absolutely crushed," Navarro says. Over the last few weeks, HouseFresh had to lay off most of its team . If nothing changes, she says, the website is doomed.

A spokesperson for Google tells the BBC that the company only launches changes to Search after rigorous testing confirms that the shift will be helpful for users, and that the company gives website owners help, resources and opportunities for feedback on their Search rankings.

Google stands firm in its position that the changes will be a benefit to the web, and changes to the Search algorithm are just the start. Last week, Google CEO Sundar Pichai stood in front of a crowd at the company's annual developer conference and announced one of the most significant moves in the search engine's history. Going forward, Pichai said, Google Search would provide its own AI-generated answers to many of your questions, a feature called "AI Overviews" that's already rolled out to users in the United States. "The result is a product that does the work for you," Pichai said. "Google Search is generative AI at the scale of human curiosity."

AI Overviews are just one of a slew of dramatic changes Google has made to its core product over the past two years. The company says its recent effort to revamp Search will usher in an exciting new era of technology and help solve many of the issues plaguing the web. But critics say the opposite may be true. As Google retools its algorithms and uses AI to transition from a search engine to a search and answer engine, some worry the result could be no less than an extinction-level event for the businesses that make much of your favourite content.

One thing is certain: Google's work is about to have a profound impact on what many of us see when we go online.

The changes came about because Google recognises the web has a problem. You've seen it yourself, if you've ever used a search engine. The Internet is dominated by a school of website building known as "search engine optimisation", or SEO, techniques that are meant to tune articles and web pages for better recognition from Google Search. Google even provides SEO tips, tools and advice for website owners. For millions of businesses that rely on the mechanisations of the Search machine, SEO can be an unavoidable game .

The trouble is SEO can be abused. Enterprising website owners realised you can sometimes make more money by making content designed to please Google's algorithms , rather than the human beings it's ostensibly designed to serve.

Google's efforts to address this issue aren't always successful. If you've ever been frustrated by what comes up when you search for something like "Best Sneakers for Women", you know the issue. Often, the results for popular search terms are crowded with websites that contain very little useful information, but tonnes of ads and links to retailers that earn publishers a share of profits. What's often lost is what you're probably looking for when you open up Google: information from people who are knowledgeable and passionate about their topic.

Google's war on spammy Search results has ramped up. In 2022, the company issued a " Helpful Content Update " to its algorithm meant to weed out content created solely for the purpose of ranking higher on Search. Google issued a subsequent update in September, 2023, and a third algorithm tweak in March of this year . Google says the result is "45% less low-quality, unoriginal content in search results". It could be viewed as a wild success.

"Our recent updates aim to connect people with content that is helpful, satisfying and original, from a diverse range of sites across the web," a Google spokesperson tells the BBC. "As we work to improve Search, we're continuing to focus on sending valuable traffic to sites and supporting a healthy, open web."

But the updates had some surprising consequences as well. For example, data from the analytics tool Semrush suggests that the website for New York Magazine lost 32% of its Google Search traffic in the past six months, while GQ.com shrank 26%. The data indicates Urban Dictionary , a wildly popular crowdsourced dictionary of English language slang, dropped some 18 million page views, amounting to more than half its Search traffic. OprahDaily.com was down nearly 58%. (Semrush is an industry-standard tool, but its numbers are third-party estimates that may differ from a website’s internal measurements. Semrush data only measures traffic coming from Google Search, specifically.)

A New York Magazine spokesperson said these findings were incomplete and didn't reflect the company's internal analysis. Representatives for GQ, Oprah Daily and Urban Dictionary did not respond to requests for comment by the time this article was published. However, experts and more than half a dozen media executives and websites owners told the BBC the broad trends in the data are all too real.

In place of these sites, there's one platform you'll be seeing much, much more of: Reddit. According to Semrush, Reddit saw a surge that amounted to a 126% growth in traffic from Google Search. The company is already feeling the benefit. Reddit just announced its first quarterly earnings since becoming a publicly traded company in March 2024. Its revenue totals $243m (£191m) , up an eye-watering 48% from the year prior.

"The increase in traffic Reddit is seeing is unprecedented on the Internet," says Lily Ray, vice president of SEO strategy and research at the marketing agency Amsive , and a celebrity in the world of SEO. "Cooking content, adult content, video games, gardening, fashion, everything is all just Reddit."

A representative for Reddit declined to comment.

Reddit isn't the only winner after Google's recent algorithm updates. Semrush data shows that other user-generated sites such as Quora and Instagram saw similarly astronomical rises, and there were impressive spikes at LinkedIn and Wikipedia as well. In one sense, Google was just following a trend. Over the past few years, swaths of savvy internet users started adding the word "Reddit" to the end of their web searches in the hopes it would bring up people sharing their honest opinions, as opposed to websites trying to game Google's system. It's something Google's public liaison for search, Danny Sullivan, has noted .

"We've found that people often want to learn from others' experiences, and so we surface content from hundreds of forums and other communities across the web," a Google spokesperson says. "Our agreement with Reddit absolutely did not include ranking its content higher on Search."

But Google results are a zero-sum game. If the search engine sends traffic to one site, it has to take it from another, and the effects on the losers in this Reddit equation are just as dramatic. "Google's just committing war on publisher websites," Ray says. "It's almost as if Google designed an algorithm update to specifically go after small bloggers. I've talked to so many people who've just had everything wiped out," she says.

A number of website owners and search experts who spoke to the BBC said there's been a general shift in Google results towards websites with big established brands, and away from small and independent sites, that seems totally disconnected from the quality of the content.

The change was instant for Daniel Hart, editor-in-chief of the UK-based entertainment news site Ready Steady Cut . "After Google's September update, our traffic halved immediately, and it's only gotten worse. We've just been blitzed by the Reddit stuff in particular, but we're also being replaced by spam websites that are stealing our content. It makes no sense," Hart says. In the months following, the lost income forced Ready Steady Cut to reduce its team of 20 writers and editors down to just four, Hart says.

A Google spokesperson said the company's recent updates have dealt a major blow to spammy, unoriginal content, and Google keeps a close watch on evolving abusive practices that lead to low-quality information in Search.

After Google's updates, the company provided tips to website owners and said there was a path to recovery. Hart says the site hired consultants and pivoted to focus on Google's recommendations, spending sleepless nights working to update the site. After almost a year, none of it helped. "I wasted the last eight months of my life trying to follow Google's advice." he says. "Google claims they want content from people with first-hand experience and helpful context, and we're a massive example of that. It's just heartbreaking."

(Note: Matthew Keys, publisher of the tech and media news site The Desk , tells the BBC his website "suffered from tremendous traffic loss" due to Google’s updates, but the drop was closer to 75-80%, not the 98.9% estimate reported by Semrush.)

But the biggest offence, according to the website owners and content creators who spoke to the BBC, is the AI generated responses.

Google argues its AI overviews in search results will be a boon to websites. Liz Reid, Google's head of search, wrote in a blog post that the company's AI search results actually increase traffic that Google sends to websites. "AI Overviews get more clicks than if the page had appeared as a traditional web listing for that query," Reid wrote. "As we expand this experience, we’ll continue to focus on sending valuable traffic to publishers and creators." However, the company hasn't shared any of the data backing up that claim, and many website owners and industry experts worry the opposite effect is just as likely.

Katie Berry, owner of the cleaning advice website Housewife How-Tos , assumes users will just end their searches if Google's AI answers questions for them. The AI search results " answer questions superficially , and often incorrectly, so people don't visit my site," Berry says. According to Berry, her site's traffic fell 70% after the 2022 Google update and dropped even further after Google started testing its new AI. "My site had more traffic in its first months of existence than it gets now, even though my rankings have not changed all that much," she says.

Others, such as travel writer David Leiter, say the potential consequences are especially problematic because they feel Google's AI is outright stealing their content.

For example, Leiter says a search for "Best Slot Canyons Near Las Vegas" used to bring up an article on his website, World Travel Guy . However, a search earlier this week brought up an AI-generated response at the top of the page instead.

"Google has replaced my article with the giant AI Overview box, and it spits out an answer that is mostly wrong," Leiter says. "The first four places it lists are not even slot canyons. A slot canyon is a specific type of canyon with a narrow passageway, but the AI doesn't understand that. It's just listing random canyons and even a walking trail instead." The AI Overview did include a link to Leiter's article, but only if you took the time to click a tiny arrow at the bottom of the result. Leiter says he doesn't believe he'll get more traffic than he used to as the top search result. In either case, it's a small consolation. Leiter says Google's recent algorithm updates erased 95% of his traffic.

Google acknowledges that AI tools may provide inaccurate information, but says it's constantly working to improve results. A Google spokesperson says AI Overviews are generally taken from multiple webpages, not single sources, and the responses are designed to highlight relevant links. The spokesperson says publishers can use a special tag on their webpages to control whether or not AI Overviews includes a link to their sites. However, once an AI model scrapes your content, it may be impossible to remove that data.

Media executives aren't the only ones questioning Google's control of the internet. Google is simultaneously battling numerous antitrust lawsuits against different parts of the company's sprawling £1.7tn ($2.2tn) business. The company is currently awaiting a decision in a lawsuit brought by the US Department of Justice accusing Google of running an illegal monopoly in the search engine industry. If the tech giant loses the case, the penalties could range from massive fines to a forced break-up of the company.

Google, which controls more than 90% of the worldwide search business, argues that the company's success stems solely from the fact that it makes superior products. A Google spokesperson says the company faces "immense competition" and people have many choices about how they search for information online.

"I understand that Google doesn't owe us or anyone else traffic," says Navarro, of HouseFresh. "But Google controls the roads. If tomorrow they decide the roads won't go to an entire town, that town dies. It's too much power to just shrug and say, 'Oh well, it's just the free market,'" she says.

"I might just try working in the offline world, just pack it all up and tend a shop somewhere," says Navarro. "Maybe it was naive to think we could succeed just by making great original content that people want to read."

Judge Cannon gifts Trump another two weeks to come up with an argument against a gag order

Judge Aileen Cannon has received flak for her plodding pace in the lead up to Donald Trump's classified documents trial, but that has not stopped her from granting the former president's lawyers another two weeks to prepare an argument against special counsel Jack Smith's request for a gag order.

Smith filed his own motion on May 24, arguing that Trump's false claims that President Joe Biden ordered the FBI officers who searched his home to use deadly force amounted to a "dangerous campaign to smear law enforcement."

Despite the FBI clarifying that the agents followed the same standard protocol they used while searching Biden's house in Delaware, Trump's Republican allies parroted his statements in often inflammatory language.

"The Biden DOJ and FBI were planning to assassinate Pres Trump and gave the green light," tweeted Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga. "I made sure that he knew."

Cannon has now ordered the Trump defense team to file a response to Smith's request for a gag order by June 14, a date that marks roughly a year since she was selected to hear the case.

"Clearly, Judge Cannon doesn’t seem to be worried about the safety of the law enforcement officers that have targets on their backs courtesy of Donald Trump’s spreading of lies about the MAL search warrant," tweeted lawyer and MSNBC host Katie Phang.

The Trump-appointed judge has been criticized for indulging nearly every request Trump's lawyers have made, no matter how far-fetched, and procrastinating on decisions for months. So daunting was the backlog of unresolved legal issues that, four weeks ago, Cannon postponed the trial indefinitely.

In doing so, Cannon has given Trump what he wanted: a delay of the trial until after Election Day. If he wins in November, the former president could have the case thrown out.

In his New York trial, where he was last week convicted of 34 felonies, the former president was blocked by a court-imposed gag order from attacking jurors, witnesses, and the judge's family. Trump violated the order no fewer than 10 times, prompting him to increasingly rely on surrogates to express his thoughts out loud.

PSA: Bartender Mac App Under New Ownership, But Lack of Transparency Raises Concerns

Popular Mac app Bartender appears to have been quietly sold approximately two months ago, with neither the prior owner nor the current owner providing customers or potential customers with information on the sale.

Bartender's new owners replied to the Reddit thread and confirmed that Bartender had been acquired, but did not explain why customers had not been notified nor why there had been a certificate change without said explanation.

Hey everyone, new owners of Bartender here! Our team acquired Bartender from Ben S, the original developer, two months ago. As we prepare to roll out updates for Bartender, we needed to re-sign the app with Apple using our company's information, replacing Ben's. This led to a one-time certificate change. Truth be told, we should have notated it on the release notes but, since we could not update them retroactively, we included this fact on our blog & shared it with users as they emailed us. We've collaborated closely with Ben to understand his vision for Bartender. Our goal is to implement many of the improvements he had planned and address any reported bugs from the past few months to enhance Bartender's performance.

Reddit users asked Bartender's owners for more information on their identity, but there was no response. The Bartender website was updated with information about the certificate change after users began seeing popups asking for new permissions, and while the blog post calls the new certificate request "expected and valid," no background information is provided on the purchase. In the Reddit thread, the owners claim to have posted information about the sale on the website, but that has turned out to be untrue.

At this point, it does not appear that Bartender's new owners plan to inform customers about the change in ownership, but users should be aware that the app has been sold and is no longer being updated by the original developer. The new owner's intentions are not clear, but as Reddit users have pointed out, the situation raises some red flags.

Update: Ben Surtees, the original developer of Bartender, today said that he sold the app to Applause three months ago. There is no other information on the company, and Applause still has not officially commented on the sale.

Inside Roaring Kitty's 3 insane weeks of hyperactive social media posting that sparked a feeding frenzy for GameStop stocks

  • Keith Gill, better known as Roaring Kitty, kickstarted the meme stock movement back in 2021. 
  • But the 37-year-old trader vanished from the public eye abruptly three years ago.
  • That was, until last month, when his sudden reemergence sent GameStop shares into a frenzy.

That's all it took for trader Keith Gill , known as Roaring Kitty, to send GameStop share prices soaring and plunging in the past few weeks.

Gill, 37, first grabbed headlines in 2021 when his evangelical zeal for GameStop shares triggered a short squeeze . The former CFA charter holder even had to testify to Congress in February 2021 for his role in the meme stock saga.

But Gill vanished from the public eye just months later when he posted his last YouTube video in April 2021.

That was until last month, when his sudden reemergence on X , formerly Twitter, sent GameStop share prices on a roller coaster ride.

Here's how Gill's bizarre social media antics have upended the stock market over the years.

"I like the stock"

Gill is widely credited for sparking the meme stock craze three years ago.

The former MassMutual financial analyst started posting his bets and analyses on GameStop on Reddit's WallStreetBets forum under the username " DeepFuckingValue " in 2019.

His online activity would later expand to YouTube, where he built an online following with his " Roaring Kitty " persona. Gill uploaded 84 videos and livestreams on his YouTube channel from July 2020 to April 2021 and has over 600,000 subscribers as of press time.

It is unclear how much money Gill made from his GameStop play.

Gill initially invested $53,000 of his life savings into GameStop in 2019. At the time, the video game retailer's stock was hovering around $5 per share . The share price would eventually peak at $483 in January 2021.

Gill's unabashed support for GameStop shares turned him into a hero among Reddit users, who saw him as a modern-day David going up against the Goliath-like hedge funds shorting the stock.

In February 2021, Gill testified before the House Financial Services Committee about the meme stock saga. In his testimony , Gill defended his social media activity and said he used only publicly available information to trade.

"The idea that I use social media to promote GameStop stock to unwitting investors and influence the market is preposterous," Gill said. "My posts did not cause the movement of billions of dollars into GameStop shares."

"As for me, I like the stock. I'm as bullish as I've ever been at a potential turnaround for GameStop, and I remain invested in the company," Gill concluded.

Roaring Kitty is back

Gill would retreat from public life just months after he testified to Congress. Besides ceasing his online activity, he left his job at MassMutual, per Reuters .

Gill, however, broke his three-year-long silence on social media last month when he posted a sketch of a man leaning forward in his chair on X.

The X post, published on May 12, caused GameStop share prices to skyrocket to 82% the following day.

Interestingly, Gill's post didn't contain a direct call for his followers to buy GameStop shares, though the man in the sketch does seem to be clutching what looks like a game controller.

Nonetheless, the post's cryptic message was enough to galvanize Gill's fans and supporters, who were quick to focus on his favorite stock.

"Roaringkitty is back," the WallStreetBets subreddit said in an X post on May 12.

Memes, clips, and Reddit posts

Since coming back online, Gill has been a prolific user of X, sometimes making multiple posts daily. The trader's posts have been coming in at a frenetic pace and seem to lack much cohesion.

For instance, Gill has posted edited clips from movies like the Wachowskis' "The Matrix" and Quentin Tarantino's "Kill Bill."

On top of clips, Gill has riffed on memes — like on May 17, when he superimposed a tired-looking Ben Affleck taking a smoke in front of a GameStop store.

Aside from drawing in retail investors, Gill's antics caught the attention of presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr .

The 70-year-old revealed on May 21 that he'd bought $24,000 worth of GameStop stock to support the meme stock movement.

"We need a free and fair market. Let's punish predatory short selling to the moon," Kennedy wrote in his X post. "By the way, I ride with you and I'm not leaving." 

But Gill wasn't done just yet. On June 2, he returned to Reddit where he appeared to disclose a $116 million GameStop position .

He later made a follow-up post , saying that his stake had grown to $140 million. He then posted a picture of a Uno reverse card on X on the same day.

Gill's recent uptick in social media activity appears to have piqued the interest of regulators and financial institutions, who may be concerned about possible market manipulation.

On Monday, The Wall Street Journal reported that Gill could get barred from Morgan Stanley's electronic trading platform, E*Trade .

A spokeswoman for the Massachusetts securities division told The Journal that they were also investigating Gill's activities.

Representatives for Gill and GameStop didn't immediately respond to requests for comment from Business Insider sent outside regular business hours.

The toddler son of rodeo star Spencer Wright has died after being hospitalized in critical condition since he drove his toy tractor into a southwestern Utah river last month, a family friend told USA TODAY Tuesday.

Levi Wright died Sunday after being removed from life support, Mindy Sue Clark, the best friend of the boy's mother, confirmed. He had been hospitalized in critical condition in Salt Lake City since the May 21 accident in Beaver, Utah near the family's home, Clark said. He was 3.

"He was the best," Clark said." We were all so blessed for three years with him."

"We will miss him every second of every day," the boy's mother, Kallie Wright, wrote in a Facebook post on Sunday.

Sheriff said child drove toy tractor into water

On the day of the accident, the Beaver County Sheriff's Office reported deputies responded to a report of a child who had driven their toy tractor into water, and witnesses at the scene had lost visual contact with the boy.

The boy was "quickly located," the sheriff's office wrote in a release, and life saving measures were administered on scene. He was then transported to a hospital, the release continues, and taken by medical helicopter to a children's hospital in Salt Lake City.

"I cannot even begin to explain how hard the last two weeks have been. From the moment my phone rang the night of his accident, to last night receiving the message that he had to go," Clark wrote on Monday in a Facebook post .

'We will miss him every second of every day'

In a social media update one day earlier, Levi's mother shared her son was being taken off life support.

"After several sleepless nights, lots of research, multiple conversations with the world's best neurologists & millions of prayers we are here in the face of our biggest fear," she wrote on  Facebook . "Levi showed us just enough to buy us time for all of this. We prayed those things were him defying odds & proving to us that he wanted to stay here but we see now he wanted to give us time to find peace with letting him go."

"I told you my baby was thoughtful & considerate, I truly believe he did that for us," his mother wrote. "During this time he brought out humanity across the nation, he dropped so many to their knees & reminded them what truly matters in this world."

In addition to his parents, Levi is survived by his 5-year-old sister Steeley, and 10-month-old brother Brae.

Who is Spencer Wright?

The boy's 33-year-old father is ranked No. 40 in the world in saddle bronc riding , according to prorodeo.com .

The athlete graduated from Milford High School in Utah in 2010 and attended Panhandle State University in Goodwell, Okla. and College of Southern Idaho in Twin Falls.

His career highlights, according to the site, including winning the 2024 Rio Grande Valley Livestock Show & Rodeo in Mercedes, Texas and being co-champion at the Wilderness Circuit Finals Rodeo in Heber City, Utah. He also won the Othello, Washington PRCA Rodeo and was co-champion at the Southeastern Livestock Exposition in Montgomery, Alabama.

Trump campaign says it raised $52.8 million after guilty verdict in fundraising blitz

Former President Donald Trump's campaign and the Republican Party raised $52.8 million in the 24 hours after Trump was convicted on 34 felony counts in his "hush money" trial, the campaign said Friday, a staggering total that represents more than half of what they raised in the entire month of April.

The campaign said that Thursday's sum mostly came from small-dollar donors, including 30% who were new contributors to WinRed, the GOP's fundraising platform. Fundraising totals can't be verified until the campaign's reports to the Federal Election Commission are released next month. 

A CBS News analysis of the Trump campaign's fundraising through April found he has received an influx in donations following key moments in his legal battles. Before his conviction on Thursday, FEC filings show Trump's two best fundraising days were April 4, 2023, when he was arraigned in New York City, and Aug. 25, 2023, the day after his mugshot was released in his separate criminal case in Georgia.

Trump's fundraising also spiked when he was indicted by federal grand juries in Florida in June 2023 and Washington, D.C., in August 2023. He likewise saw a bump when a different judge in New York ordered him to pay $454 million in fines and interest in his civil fraud case in February.

Between his conviction in the "hush money" case and Friday afternoon, Trump's team spent at least $94,900 on ads on Facebook and Instagram — more than double what the campaign spent in the week leading up to the trial's conclusion, according to data from the Meta Ad Library. The ads paint Trump as a "political prisoner," and say Thursday was a "dark day in America." 

"I WAS JUST CONVICTED IN A RIGGED TRIAL," many of the ads begin. Trump railed against the trial as "rigged" and called the charges a "scam" in remarks at Trump Tower on Friday.

Social media ads the Trump campaign began running after the former president's guilty verdict in his "hush money" case in New York on May 30, 2024.

The ads direct users to WinRed, a Republican fundraising site that crashed minutes after the verdict. The campaign said the technical failure was caused by the swell of traffic to the site. 

Trump's campaign and the Republican Party raised roughly $76 million in April , surpassing the monthly total brought in by President Biden and the Democratic Party for the first time in this election cycle. FEC filings show Democrats have more cash on hand, but an influx of donations following his conviction could help Trump catch up. 

Trump's ads in the wake of the verdict echo the theme of his rhetoric throughout the trial: that the charges against him were part of a politically motivated effort by Democrats to weaken his campaign. One of his most widely viewed ads prior to his conviction repeated the falsehood that the trial was spearheaded by the Biden administration, when in fact it was a state case prosecuted by the Manhattan district attorney.

Trump has also rallied supporters by calling himself the victim of a political "witch hunt," a phrase he's used in at least 382 posts on his platform Truth Social and in several social media ads.

Trump is now doubling down on the narrative, urging those who visit his WinRed donation page to "NEVER SURRENDER" under a photo of the mugshot that previously helped him raise millions.

For its part, the Biden campaign said Trump is "unhinged" and "consumed by his own thirst for revenge and retribution" after his remarks on Friday. 

The president himself addressed the verdict for the first time later in the day, saying at the White House that the verdict reaffirmed the "American principle that no one is above the law."
