cuhk personal statement sample

A "Personal Statement" is an important vehicle through which you introduce yourself to a third party for a specific purpose - enrolling in a graduate school, applying for a scholarship, seeking an internship opportunity, or applying for a job. To write a good Personal Statement, the skills required are as delicate as creating Coffee Art - and practice makes perfect! The following sections will introduce key qualities of good Personal Statements. The recommended links provide both practical and user-friendly tips, samples/templates, and textbook resources on writing Personal Statements (i) for Academic Purposes; and (ii) for Career Purposes.

Essentials for Personal Statements

Effective Personal Statements can open the door to an interview, selection for admission to graduate schools, or even help you to secure a scholarship – but just remember "COFFEE ART"

Contributions To demonstrate your worth through how you can contribute to the academic institution or organization,
Objectives and Plan To outline your objectives and plan in pursuing the immediate future goal -further studies, or entry positions into specific industry,
Fresh and Distinctive To stand out, you must be unique amongst thousands of candidates so that you will impress readers of your compelling Personal Statement. Focus on your features and core competitive advantage with concrete information,
Focused, Structured with Style To be well-organized, make your Personal Statement enjoyable and interesting to read,
Expressions To make sure your expressions and tone are used appropriately. You can also demonstrate your personality via your writing style,
Easy to Read To ensure that the content is concise and easily understandable,
Achievements To show your achievements, dedication, setbacks, and capabilities to overcoming hardships,
Reasons for Choosing Each Other To demonstrate specific reasons why you have selected the particular academic programme or organization; and convince them skillfully why they should choose you,
Theme To set out the theme or include headings for the content that you would like to communicate with the reviewer which fit with the specific purposes of your Personal Statement.

Sample SOP for Hong Kong

From a very young age, I witnessed my father run his own business of clothes and garments. As I grew up, I started participating in the business by strategizing a business model, dealing with clients, and searching for suitable raw materials. Over time, my interest evolved in the field of marketing and business, which made me intrigued by the complexities of business, which further inspired me to pursue a BBA at BB Ganguly University in Kolkata.

During my undergraduate studies, I was exposed to a wide range of business-related subjects, including finance, business law, and entrepreneurship. Through these courses, I developed a strong foundation in marketing principles, analytical thinking, and critical reasoning skills, which I believe will serve as a solid base for my advanced studies at ABC University.

After completing the program, I was campus-placed into a leading establishment, “Care & Co.”, as a Business Development Executive. My task was to improve the company’s sales, establish new connections in the industry, and help in team building. As my job progressed, I was made head of the business and marketing team. I not only supervised the branch that I worked in but I was also in charge of other branches and their marketing strategies. This experience offered me valuable insights into the practical aspects of entrepreneurship and business management. It also strengthened my resolve to pursue further education. As my career progressed, I realised that I needed to take on more responsibility and challenging roles in this field in order to achieve my goals. Thus, I resigned after 5 years of loyal work.

My short-term aspiration is to pursue a career in international business. I am particularly interested in exploring the intersection of marketing and business analytics. My long-term goal is to collaborate with my father and actively contribute to the growth and success of our own establishment, striving it to one of the top positions. With the solid theoretical foundation, practical skills, and international perspective gained from ABC University, I am confident in my ability to make a meaningful contribution to the field.

I am interested in pursuing an MBA in International Business at ABC University due to the numerous exceptional opportunities it offers. The university is home to various research centres focused on areas such as Commercial, International Global, and Private trade. Throughout the year, each research centre organises seminars and lectures that are open to all postgraduate students. By pursuing an “MBA in International Business” at ABC University, I am confident that I will gain a comprehensive entrepreneurial education, establish valuable connections with experts in the field, and be equipped with the necessary skills and knowledge to excel in my chosen career path. I look forward to being an active participant in the vibrant academic environment and contributing to the scholarly community at ABC University.

How To Write A Personal Statement Letter: A Sample

Have you ever tried impressing somebody that you went to great lengths to get their approval? It’s the same way as writing a personal statement letter.

China Admissions supports international students throughout their application journey. During document preparation, a common question that always pops up is, “how do you write a personal statement letter?”

Before we share our best tips to write an excellent personal statement letter, it’s important that you understand the purpose of this letter and how it can increase your chances of getting accepted into your chosen university.

What is the Purpose of a Personal Statement Letter?

A personal statement letter is a promotional essay about yourself. Sounds so “out there”, right? But it’s true. This kind of letter is a reflective essay that showcases your own interesting story, and why you’re a great candidate to the course/university you’re applying to.

Contrary to what most students believe, admission committees actually scrutinize every applicant’s personal statement letter. Although they consider other credentials, the personal statement letter has weight in identifying worthy applicants.

Best Tips To Write An Excellent Personal Statement Letter

We suggest you write in the format below. Make sure you emphasize the following:

  • your background;
  • why you want to apply to the program and;
  • what you plan to do in the future and how it will help you.

Here’s a sample personal statement letter that you can follow:

Your Name Your Address Date University Name University Address Dear Sir/Madam, (Introduction) My name is <your name> from <your country> and I would like to to apply to the <program> at <your university>. A paragraph introducing your background, academic ability, and discusswhat makes you a strong candidate. A paragraph explaining why you are interested in the program and how you found out about the program. You can also mention people who helped you such as China Admissions or friends in China. Explain what you know about the program and what are the strengths of the program. Show that you’ve done your homework and that you understand the program and university. A paragraph explaining your future plans and career goals, how the program will help you, and what you plan to achieve in the future. (Conclusion) Briefly summarize the content of your letter. Thank the reader for taking the time to review your application (e.g. “I look forward to the opportunity to study at your university.”) Yours sincerely, <Your name and signature> <Your email> <your phone number>

How to Write the Perfect Personal Statement when Applying to Universities in Hong Kong for an Undergraduate Degree?

The personal statement is the application component in which the students have the opportunity to articulate their skills and experience. This section is an essential component in your application when applying to universities in Hong Kong for an undergraduate degree.

What is a Personal Statement?

A Personal Statement is a very important part of your application because it is an opportunity for you to showcase your skills, personality and achievements to the university. It is a 4000-character essay written by you which allows universities to understand why you are applying and why you are the best fit for the university.

While writing your personal statement, make sure to answer:

  • What is your background?
  • What have you achieved?
  • What have you done which stands out from other applicants?
  • Why are you a good fit for the course?
  • Why do you want to study in Hong Kong?
  • How can you contribute to the University?
  • What have you learnt from your previous experiences?

Tips to write a good personal statement

To produce an effective and well written personal statement, we have a few tips:

  • First off, plan the structure of the essay. Do this by creating a mind map which will include your background, your extracurricular activities, why you want to apply and other important details.
  • Emphasize the things you have done and the experiences you have been through. This could include a personal story or an anecdote which stands out from other applicants.
  • Be honest about your strengths, achievements and most importantly, make it your own work.
  • Remember to always keep in mind the character count. The personal statement should be coherent, concise and easy to understand.
  • Make sure to proofread your essay . Grammatical errors, sentence structure and language play a very important role as they can greatly influence your application decision.

Remember that the personal statement speaks about you so the most important thing is to be yourself while writing the personal statement.

If you need help with personal statements or application essays, get in touch with our university-specific mentors at UniRely. For more information, please visit our website unirely.com to learn more about the process of applying to universities in HK for an undergraduate degree.

HK Medicine Applicant

HK Medicine Applicant

cuhk personal statement sample

Quick Access

Changes in admissions tests (2025 entry).

The BMAT test will be discontinued starting in 2024 (for applicants applying to start University in 2025). Multiple BMAT universities have already confirmed moving to the UCAT test, while others are to be updated - check their websites regularly for the latest updates.

How to increase your chance of admission into HKU and CUHK Medicine (Non-JUPAS application)

If you are applying to HKU or CUHK medical school as a non-JUPAS applicant, there will be a range of things to consider when preparing your application - from attending a university open day, doing work experiences, writing your personal statement, submitting your application to attending an interview, etc. Here are some tips to help you to succeed along the way.

Make sure you chose the right subject combination you need to apply for medicine in Hong Kong

All medicine schools will set a minimum academic requirement for their applicants. UK medical schools typically require their applicants to study a minimum of three A-level subjects, which typically include maths and sciences. It is important to bear in mind that the requirement for studying medicine in Hong Kong is generally higher.

For example, the minimum requirement for CUHK and HKU medicine is four A level subjects. Unfortunately, both won't accept EPQ as the 4th subject. Furthermore, Chinese and Further Maths are not accepted as the 4th subject by CUHK. Hence if you want to apply for CUHK or HKU medicine, make sure you study for 4 A level subjects, excluding Chinese, Further Maths and EPQ.

Important: Before applying, you should check the CUHK and HKU medical school websites for the most up to date information on the minimum requirement for your academic qualifications (GCE A level, IB diploma, SAT/AP/ACT).

Attending university open day / summer medicine taster programme

We strongly recommend those who are interested in Medicine or healthcare to attend a summer taster programme organised by CUHK or HKU medical schools.

Such programmes aim at enhancing students’ understanding of multiple healthcare professions, including Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences. Through lectures, interactive workshops, laboratory sessions and group discussions, students will have a chance to explore global health issues from the perspectives of different specialties. With the hands-on approach and the variety of experiential activities, students will gain a better insight into their career prospect. It will also give them an opportunity to explore the course structure, university life and culture through speaking with current medical students, tutors and professors from the respective medical schools. Last but not least, they could contribute to your personal statement content as well as your interview answer to the classic question: “why do you want to study with us”?

Getting healthcare related work experience or volunteering in a caring role

Whether through volunteering or paid employment, having experience in a caring role or in a healthcare environment is extremely valuable for your application to medicine.

Getting hands-on experience will also give you a great insight into the day-to-day life of being a doctor and show your commitment to becoming a medic. Furthermore, these experiences would provide excellent content for your personal statement and talking points during interviews. If you are a student planning to apply to medicine, you should plan ahead and start arranging or applying for work experience.

Writing your personal statement

The most important part of writing your personal statement is not to rush it. Find out about the deadlines (internal school deadline as well as the official external deadline) and give yourself plenty of time to draft your personal statement - brainstorming and drafting. It is not unusual for most students to go through 5-6 drafts before finalising their personal statement.

Medical schools want to know not just about your grades, but about you as a person. Talk about all the things you have achieved in your life: personal interests, hobbies, sports achievements, academic prizes, projects you have worked on, social groups you've been a part of.

For CUHK, you are required write a 250-word personal statement. HKU, on the other hand, requires a 1 to 2-page personal statement upon application. Most students will start with their HKU Medicine personal statement, which sometimes is an extension or adaptation of their UK medical school personal statement if they are also applying to medicine in the UK.

After submitting your application, you may be shortlisted for an interview on the basis of your academic record and non-academic (extracurricular) achievements.

Generally, HKU interviews begin over the Christmas period and last all the way to August. They have updated their interview format in December 2022, please refer to the below.

For CUHK, applicants with exceptional UCAT/BMAT scores* may be invited to an early interview (in January or April), while other shortlisted applicants will be interviewed in July or after A-level results day (mid-August). *UCAT/BMAT is not required for CUHK medicine application, but is highly encouraged and could be an advantage in securing an early interview. CUHK Interviews are conducted in a panel style in English, with a panel of two interviewers.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, some interviews may be conducted online in place of in-person interviews.

Work experience for applying to Medicine

Why is work experience needed?

All medical schools require applicants to have an understanding of what a career in medicine involves. It is therefore essential that you gain medicine/healthcare related and people-focused experiences of providing care or service before you apply. You will be expected to discuss these experiences in your personal statement and at your interviews.

Did you know...

  • Most medical schools do not set a minimum number of hours of work experience, but they do want you to reflect on what you have learnt.
  • The most important things about work experience are what you have learnt about yourself, what you have demonstrated about your commitment to caring for other people, and what understanding you have gained of how effective care is delivered to patients.

What do medical schools want to see?

They want to see how your work experience has given you

  • Experience of giving care, support or help to other people so you understand the realities of working in a caring profession
  • Some of the attributes and qualities essential to being a doctor, such as teamwork, good communication skills, and the ability to interact with a wide variety of people
  • A realistic understanding of medicine and in particular, the physical, organisational and emotional demands of a medical career

What type of work experiences do I need?

Ideally, you should begin your work experience 1-2 years prior to applying to medical schools. There are two basic types of experience that you can have:

  • Working with other people in a caring or service role, and in particular, with people who are ill, disabled or disadvantaged. (Strongly recommended)
  • Direct observation of healthcare, i.e. work shadowing.

While shadowing a doctor or healthcare professionals can be useful, medical schools recognise that this is not attainable for everyone (especially during the COVID-19 pandemic). Your work experience can be working with other people in a caring or service role, and in particular, with people who are ill, disabled or disadvantaged. You can gain care experience in care homes for the elderly, hospitals, hospices, nurseries, special schools, community-based settings, or by volunteering to provide first aid or other support services.

Paid employment or voluntary work in areas outside of healthcare can also help you demonstrate the attributes and soft skills required for medicine, such as working with people, teamwork and communication skills.

Making the most out of your work experiences...

Reflect on your experiences and make sure you can express what you have learnt about yourself and medicine. Complete a diary during your work experience where you can reflect on your experiences and observations.

Finding the relevant medicine related experiences / shadowing may be challenging sometimes, in such cases, students are expected to be resourceful and use online media or other means to explore medicine.

Other practical ways to gain experience and understand medicine as a career:

  • Keep a reflective diary on what is happening in the news and online on healthcare related issues : Many healthcare professionals are posting online about their experience of working during the pandemic. Listen to what they have to say and reflect on this.
  • Make use of online resources : There are some free online courses that have been recognised by medical schools as a suitable element of relevant experience to help prepare an application to medicine.
  • Volunteer in your spare time : All forms of voluntary work can provide helpful work experience. While volunteering in a healthcare setting or working in a caring or service role (in particular with people who are ill, disabled or disadvantaged) is preferable, such roles are limited during the pandemic. At the same time, other volunteering schemes may still be in operation and worth exploring. Voluntary commitments to your local community and online community support groups may also provide valuable experience of taking on responsibility, developing your people skills and communication skills effectively. It is likely that these sorts of volunteering opportunities will start to run again before healthcare related opportunities are available.

How to gain relevant work experience during the COVID-19 pandemic?

During the COVID-19 pandemic, many medicine outreach programmes have been put on hold or cancelled, making it difficult for students to gain relevant in-person experience in healthcare.

Don’t worry, you’re not alone - most applicants to medicine are in a similar situation, and medical schools are aware of this and will adapt their expectations to the situation applicants find themselves in.

Remember – while in-person medicine work experience is not an absolute requirement during the COVID-19 pandemic, it does not mean that you could relax and skip this part.

Students are expected to be resourceful and use online media or other means to explore medicine.

HKU / CUHK Medicine interview Tips

*Please note that HKU has recently updated their interview format, the latest format is as follows:

There are six MMI stations - 5 stations will be conducted in English and 1 station will be conducted in Cantonese. For previous years, HKU MMI interviews were conducted in person, each station being 6 minutes long. Due to the Covid pandemic, the MMI interview for 2021 entry was conducted via online Zoom (eMMI) - each station was 3 mins long.

Individual interview (part 1)

  • 2 questions
  • 1 English and 1 Chinese questions

You will be assessed on:

  • General knowledge (on current events including Hong Kong’s healthcare system)
  • Critical thinking and analytical thinking
  • Personal insight
  • Language skill (both English and Cantonese)

Group exercise / interview (part 2)

  • 1 interviewer, 4 candidates
  • 8 minutes for conversation
  • 1 English conversation topic
  • Time management
  • Teamwork and Collaboration
  • Communication skills

Based on feedback from past applicants, the questions were not always medicine related; they were more general in nature and aimed to assess your communication skills in both English and Cantonese, personal insight, critical thinking skills, abstract thinking skills, ethical decision-making, and general knowledge on current events including Hong Kong’s healthcare system.

Here are some HKU medicine interview questions from previous years:

  • [English] You accidentally made a scratch on another car while pulling out of the parking lot. Considering that you are in a hurry to go to an interview, what do you do?
  • [English] Of the following three patients awaiting organ donations — a senior government official, a normal, healthy citizen, and a relative — who would get the organ transplant first? Please justify your decision.
  • [English] A 15-year-old girl recently got a tattoo on her arm, and her mother was extremely upset and angry with her when she found out. If you were the girl’s sibling, how would you resolve this conflict?
  • [English] How should Hong Kong allocate its resources in the public healthcare system? What services should it prioritise? Why?
  • [Cantonese] Hong Kong has recently proposed a household waste charging scheme, where households will need to pay a certain charge per litre (i.e. 11 cents per litre) for the disposal of municipal solid waste. What are your thoughts on this scheme?
  • [Cantonese] What are your thoughts on the Basic Competency Assessment (BCA) and on the Territory-Wide System Assessment (TSA)?
  • [English] Should Hong Kong allow foreign doctors to come and work? Why or why not?
  • [English] Note : A picture of a coffin is shown. What are your feelings and thoughts towards this photo?

Fluency in both English and Cantonese is key

HKU Medicine interview can be stressful, and speaking fluently in two very different languages under high pressure conditions can be challenging.

It is crucial for HK medical students to be able to speak Cantonese fluently at the interview, since doctors in Hong Kong mostly communicate with their patients in this dialect, and as medical students, you will come into contact with patients from Year 1.

During HKU medicine interview, one of the questions will be in Cantonese, the de facto language of the city, where your Cantonese speaking ability will be assessed.

Reading aloud a short section of a book or an article in the newspaper in Chinese everyday can really help you to enhance your general knowledge and keep you up to date on current events including Hong Kong’s healthcare system. More importantly, this exercise can improve your fluency in Cantonese communication.

Practicing timing of your answer

Also, during the HKU medicine interview, there will not be a timer to indicate how much time you have left, so it may be worthwhile to practice your timing beforehand.

  • Panel style interview – around 20mins, by two medical school admission directors or faculty members
  • Before the interview, the applicant will be asked to submit a one-page A4 CV outlining their extracurricular achievements.
  • Language: English (but be prepared that the interviewers may switch to Chinese to test your proficiency.)
  • Topic asked:
  • the student's interest in medicine,
  • general knowledge about health care,
  • opinions about ethics and humanism,
  • teamwork, leadership and communication
  • the characteristics and roles of a doctor

How to prepare for your Hong Kong medicine interviews?

  • Know your Personal Statement inside out - this should be obvious for all Medicine applicants. Based on past feedback, CUHK places quite a strong focus on the personal statement, as interviewers will ask you about your extracurricular activities and what you have learnt from them. CUHK may also request a two-page CV from interviewees, so make sure that you have something to say about the work experience/extracurricular activities that you have listed.
  • Understand the basic medical ethics principles - Similar to other medical school interviews, for Hong Kong Medicine interviews you should understand the four pillars of Ethics (autonomy, beneficence, non-maleficence and justice) and know how to apply them to different situations. An additional piece of advice would be to link the ethics back to the Hong Kong context.
  • Read up on Hong Kong news and general affairs - Similar to reading up about the NHS when applying to UK medical schools, it’s a good idea to read up on Hong Kong medical news and the basics of the Hong Kong medical system. You should appreciate some key differences between the medical system in other countries (e.g. UK NHS if you are studying abroad) and Hong Kong, and be aware of some important policies or schemes that the Department of Health has proposed or enforced.
  • Brush up on your Cantonese speaking skills (see above)

Medicine Interview Workshop

Your interview performance will directly impact your chance of securing an offer. Most students may find the idea of an interview daunting. If you are nervous, interview coaching and mock interviews go a long way to prepare you for the type of questions you will be asked; and ultimately increase your chance of securing an offer.

We provide both Medicine Interview Workshop (Group Class) and 1 to 1 Mock training. For 1 to 1 mock training, each mock session will last 45 minutes* which includes feedback. At the end of the mock interview, the interviewer will discuss the student's performance, highlighting areas for improvement. Please contact us here for enquiry.

*Option to extend to an hour for additional interview coaching

Medicine/ Dentistry / Other Healthcare related courses

HKU Medicine uses both individual and group interview formats, while CUHK Medicine uses individual panel interviews. Regardless of the format, the interviews are designed to explore the student’s personal qualities and attributes which are vital to becoming a good doctor in the future.

You can expect to be asked about your interest in Medicine (or your chosen field), your knowledge of healthcare as well as questions on Ethics, Current issues, Teamwork and Communication.

My son has diverse interest in university programs, he loves both Finance and Medical streams. In JUPAS may not an issue, but in non-JUPAS, he needs to submit a Personal Statement(s) to address his preference. Although still have 10 months for application, we would like to draft those statements around summer break and reduce the side-track in term time.

I have the following questions to seek for advice from experienced parents and or academics with admission experience.

1. What's the admission officer's view of applicants have diverse interests if they are equal capable in both streams?

2. Can he put both streams in a single statement? Like HKU - MBBS + BBA, or CUHK - Medicine + QFin....... It's a logical or risky attempt from an admission officer or professor's view?

3. His two streams option also reflect his safety-net mindset, say MBBS needs PG 40+ for interview, QFin 36+. Any comment or suggestion on this?

4. If its too risky, he should focus on one stream per university, what's your suggestion based on our current info?

English (A, L&LS) HL
Chinese (A, L&LS) SL
Maths HL
Economics HL
Chemistry HL
Physics SL

He takes 4 HL right now, will downgrade one to SL after July to maximise the PG and maintain the flexibility in program selection.

Thanks in advance.

Not necessary non-JUPAS, UCAS and other systems also welcome. I just want to know the mindset of the person who sit at the other side of the table.

? means a marginal case while a candidate adopting a ‘combined’ statement is assumed to fail in competing with another one submitting a ‘single-stream’ statement when other things are equal between them. Nevertheless, each candidate has his/her own preference of university choices and programme choices such that there are no hard and fast rules in formulating a unified strategy in university applications.

I also supplements some comments in the original post below:

The admission officer of a particular programme/faculty will put more weight on a ‘single-stream’ statement targeting his programme/faculty rather than a ‘combined’ statement with diverse interests in other programmes/faculties.

2. Can he put both streams in a single statement? Like HKU - MBBS + BBA, or CUHK - Medicine + QFin....... It's a logical or risky attempt from an admission officer or professor's view? The admission officer will look at the statement when there are cases of tie scores …

3. His two streams option also reflect his safety-net mindset, say MBBS needs PG 40+ for interview, QFin 36+. Any comment or suggestion on this? While the safety-net consideration is well-understood, you may like to clarify with your son on his first choice based on his own interests.

English (A, L&LS) HL Chinese (A, L&LS) SL Maths HL Economics HL Chemistry HL Physics SL He takes 4 HL right now, will downgrade one to SL after July to maximise the PG and maintain the flexibility in program selection. Taking English A HL is very challenging for a local Chinese student not studying in an international school unless English/Law will be among his programme choices. Moreover, if the bilingual diploma is not important, downgrading one language to B may be considered with a view of maximizing the IB score.

Thanks in advance.

Thanks so much for your replies. My initial thoughts:
1. He will fine tune his electives and levels to maximise the PG and AG respectively;
2. He may opt for MBBS - HKU, QFin - CUHK, BBA - HKUST.......

BTW, how useful is the personal statement? Refer to your reply, will be useful when tie scores only or more than that.

So single stream mindset is the norm, not the best interest to students.

He focuses on Economics and or Political Science in UCAS. Should be OK.

Thanks so much for your replies. My initial thoughts:

My son consulted his University Counselor last week and confirmed he can submit different personal statement version to different faculty. His senior got both conditional offers from MBBS and BBA-Law (HKU).

1. Personal statements are . If they want the grades/activity record of the candidates, they can simply look for an excel file to check. Don't simply think mentioning the various achievements made could impress the viewers - who themselves are high-achievers in many aspects. Say more personal experience - not just listing them out but illustrate how the experience changes u, and wt u've learnt.

2. Following/Before personal statements is interview. For this reason it should attract viewers to let u come to the interview/remember yr interview. Make them wonder how yr past experience made u feel the programme suits u. And wt u think the programme could benefit u - in terms of  the field of knowledge, interests, dream, and career.

3. Do some research on the University first - find out wt they're proud of - regardless of the PR rhetorics and pretentious press release - just think of them as if they're real. For example, is it a comprehensive research-based university? Are u really interested in research? how do u know? or u simply look for a tech-based vocational training institute? Don't just think of gaining from the U but how u're going to benefit the field of academics.

4. Don't paraphrase. Normally the personal statement is one in the many. Clumsy rephrasing wastes their time. IN OTHER WORDS, "in other words" means sth repeating/meaningless would follow. No single sentence should be the same -- don't write like wt I'm now doing. Be effective. Make a topic sentence and concluding sentence for each paragraph. Ask for chances for exploring more about the programme, rather than simply doing a "skippable" ending paragraph begging that "It would be most grateful if an interview is granted". Limit the statement in one A4 page (or online form in 500 words), unless otherwise stated.

5. Don't show your foolishness by telling wt/how much yr know in the field. They are experts more than u are. Just tell them how yr experience (ECA/action-learning/volunteering work) affect yr life, aspirations and achievements. DON'T JUST TELL THEM "I PARTICIPATE IN THIS RACE AND I ACHIEVE THAT PRIZE." Do some reflections. Be humble, not hollow.

6. Be specific. Why Oxford but not Warwick? Just because it's more famous huh? Why CU not HKU? No 2 programmes are identical.

7. Proofread 100 times. No grammatical errors. No wrong format (block style is fine). No flowery difficult complicated weird rare sentence structure and words. No "I" starting in every sentences.

These're just wt I told some others who applied for oxbridge warwick PPE/IPE/PE/E, HKU Science & CU Science and they all succeeded. I don't know much about the business programme but I guess their mindset would be roughly similar esp for the Business experts.

Hi, ch1970,

Thank you. It's a very good sharing, especially for those who have no experience.

My kid applied UK universities through UCAS last October and it was really a difficult task for him to draft the personal statement. The only guidance at the beginning were just from the websites of different universities (LSE, Durham...).

Fortunately, he got 2 interviews (one from oxbridge) and the warm up questions were related to the personal statement.

But for local universities (JUPAS), it seems that the personal statement weight much less, they consider academic results mainly.

Your son's senior could not obtain conditional offer from MBBS and BBA+Law because both programme specify that they would not consider your consideration unless you put your choice as 1st choice.

My D applied for MBBS (HKU) as her first choice and Biomedical Science (HKU) as her second choice. Her second choice was rejected soon after her submission of the application because both programme require the applicant to put the choice as the first choice.

Statement of Purpose

The statement of purpose is very important to programs when deciding whether to admit a candidate. Your statement should be focused, informative, and convey your research interests and qualifications. You should describe your reasons and motivations for pursuing a graduate degree in your chosen degree program, noting the experiences that shaped your research ambitions, indicating briefly your career objectives, and concisely stating your past work in your intended field of study and in related fields. Your degree program of interest may have specific guidance or requirements for the statement of purpose, so be sure to review the degree program page for more information. Unless otherwise noted, your statement should not exceed 1,000 words.

Personal Statement

Please describe the personal experiences that led you to pursue graduate education and how these experiences will contribute to the academic environment and/or community in your program or Harvard Griffin GSAS. These may include social and cultural experiences, leadership positions, community engagement, equity and inclusion efforts, other opportunities, or challenges. Your statement should be no longer than 500 words.

Please note that there is no expectation to share detailed sensitive information and you should refrain from including anything that you would not feel at ease sharing. Please also note that the Personal Statement should complement rather than duplicate the content provided in the Statement of Purpose.

Visit Degree Programs and navigate to your degree program of interest to determine if a Personal Statement is required. The degree program pages will be updated by early September indicating if the Personal Statement is required for your program.

Writing Sample

Please visit Degree Programs and navigate to your degree program of interest to determine if a writing sample is required. When preparing your writing sample, be sure to follow program requirements, which may include format, topic, or length.
