The steamy Dakota Johnson erotic thriller 50 Shades of Grey —which was shredded by critics—will soon stream on Netflix.

Based on the first of author E.L. James’ best-selling 50 Shades book trilogy, 50 Shades of Grey was released in theaters on February 11, 2015—arriving in time for the Valentine’s Day movie crowd. The movie was followed by the sequels 50 Shades Darker in 2017 and Fifty Shades Free in 2018.

As of 2023, per Variety , James’ book trilogy sold more than 165 million copies combined worldwide. But while readers devoured the 50 Shades of Grey books, critics and fans regurgitated the movies based on the global literary sensation.

Debuting on Netflix on Tuesday, 50 Shades of Grey stars Jamie Dornan as Christian Grey, a billionaire businessman who introduces a 21-year-old college senior, Anastasia Steele (Johnson), to his lurid world of sadomasochism.

Fifty Shades of Grey arrives on streamer this week as one of the 10 worst-reviewed movies on Netflix in June .

Rotten Tomatoes critics gave Fifty Shades of Grey a 25% “rotten” rating based on 280 reviews, while viewers gave the movie a 41% “rotten” Audience Score based on 50,000-plus ratings.

Despite the critical hate, 50 Shades of Grey went on to become a blockbuster at the worldwide box office—earning $166.1 million domestically and $406.6 million internationally for a global tally of $570.7 million, according to The Numbers .

The movie, the box office tracker added, had a $40 million production budget before prints and advertising costs.

The Popularity Of The Film Trilogy Leveled Off After ‘50 Shades Of Grey’

While 50 Shades of Grey defied critics with a massive haul at the worldwide box office, the film’s two sequels didn’t fare quite as well.

The first sequel— Fifty Shades Darker —earned $114.4 million domestically and $266.3 million overseas for a worldwide take of $381.3 million against a $55 million budget before P&A.

The final film in the trilogy— Fifty Shades Freed —made $100.4 in North American ticket sales and $271.5 million internationally for a $371.9 million global tally against a $55 million budget before P&A.

Both Fifty Shades Darker and Fifty Shades Freed were splattered with “rotten” 11% ratings from Rotten Tomatoes critics.

The RT Audience Score for Fifty Shades Darker came in at a “rotten” 48 percent based on 25,000-plus ratings, while 50 Shades Freed earned a franchise-low 38% “rotten” Audience Score based on 5,000-plus ratings.

Only 50 Shades of Grey is debuting on Netflix on Tuesday. Neither 50 Shades Darker nor 50 Shades Freed are available on any subscription streaming services but can be rented on video on demand on several digital platforms for $3.99 each.

The Christian Themes In 2016's Biggest Films: Part 2

If you look for him, Jesus is hiding all over the place in modern cinema. In fact, a trip to the local multiplex can often feel like a theological version of 'Where's Wally?'. Sometimes you find him in the most unlikely places (like last year's Mad Max: Fury Road ), and sometimes you can't miss him (thanks for the subtle approach, God's Not Dead 2 ) ; either way our culture's biggest stories seem to continually chime with the Eternal Story. Following on from part one, here's six more months of the year's biggest movies and just a few of the places where God or theology showed up, unexpectedly or otherwise.

They made us wait a long, long time for a sequel to Finding Nemo , but when it finally arrived, Finding Dory  was a delight. Yet as Krish Kandiah wrote on this site , while the film does a great job of dealing positively with disability, it contained plenty to unsettle children who are or were in the care system. Interestingly it wasn't the only children's film that month to take that risk; The BFG' s central child character is also abducted from a London orphanage. The latter film continued 2016's trend for live-action remakes of beloved animations and featured a brilliant motion-capture performance from Mark Rylance as the giant of the title. The Secret Life of Pets   was suitably fluffy fun but it lacked the depth and intelligence of the year's earlier sentient animal movies, as did the 17th (or something) Ice Age movie, Ice Age: Collision Course  (it was no good, but that won't stop them). They were joined in the cinematic summer by perhaps the most Marmite movie of the year, Paul Feig's all-female remake of Ghostbusters , which for my money was a fun caper with a strong cast and helped to expose the latent gender prejudices of some of the movie-going public. None of these films really had much to say about God or theology, so it was a good job that Star Trek: Beyond  addressed more spiritual themes of hope and the need for a saviour, albeit in the context of an apparently godless universe.

After Ghostbuster's all-girl cast caused uproar the previous month, the mixed ethnicity anti-heroes of Suicide Squad   drew similar fire in August. And again, while reviews and Internet chatter poured scorn on DC's latest attempt at challenging Marvel's screen superiority, the movie itself turned out to be perfectly fine. It also provided a really interesting exploration of the idea of redemptive violence and the idea that some kinds of evil are worse or better than others.

While it didn't make a huge splash, I'll warn you now that apparently flimsy teen movie Nerve  is going to make an appearance in my top 10 films of the year. With plenty of inventive camerawork, a strong narrative thread and a fascinating illumination of digital youth culture, for me it was the most under-rated movie of 2016, although it was closely challenged by superior western Hell or High Water .  From a Christian perspective, the Mark Burnett/Roma Downey megabucks remake of Ben-Hur  should have been the highlight of the year but it flopped horribly, failing to perform anywhere near as well as projected thanks to sniffy reviews and the fact that it wasn't actually any good. It was better than David Brent: Life on the Road ,  however, the Ricky Gervais vanity project which was definitely 2016's most disappointing film. Christians 1, Atheists 0, but only just.

A sequel hasn't been excitedly anticipated and dreaded in such equal measure since parents realised they were making another  Moshi Monsters  movie; Bridget Jones' Baby  wasn't a critical hit, but that didn't stop fans flocking to cinemas all month long. Which was a shame, because it meant that fewer people went to see Hillsong: Let Hope Rise , the movie version of everyone's favourite megachurch, which released the same day. As the month progressed, things started to heat up a bit; The Magnificent Seven  remake way exceeded expectations but gave an ugly insight into the American cultural belief that guns can save the world, while Mark Wahlberg's Deepwater Horizon  was a similarly above-average disaster movie which took a high view of Christian faith. The scene near the end where the survivors of the film's stricken oil-rig kneel in prayer is one of the most spiritually-profound and God-affirming in recent history.

If ever there was a film perfectly reviewed by its own title, it was Jack Reacher: Never Go Back .  Tom Cruise needs to knock it off now and start playing interesting characters again or people might start to write him off as a bit of a religious weirdo. It wasn't the worst big-budget movie of the month, however; someone inexplicably green-lit yet another Tom Hanks / Dan Brown movie, Inferno . In better news, Ben Affleck vehicle  The Accountant  was very nearly a superb movie, which had one twist too many and became only quite good. The tale of an autistic man who harnesses his difficulties and turns them into super powers was too silly in places to be truly inspirational but it did at least provide a subversive view of 'disability.' And while the film itself was fairly derivative, Emily Blunt lit up The Girl on the Train  and familiarised us all with 'gaslighting', a cousin of the sort of spiritual abuse that is unfortunately too common in the Church. The best film of the month by far was Marvel's Doctor Strange , the Benedict Cumberbatch superhero origin story which was packed with theological themes and concerned itself with a world beyond the physical. It wasn't specifically Christ-affirming, but it certainly opened the door to the idea of being able to access a power way beyond our own, and doing so through faith. It also wins top marks for having some of the most innovative action sequences of this or any other year.

Another thoughtful sci-fi/fantasy film was arguably November's strongest movie, Denis Villeneuve's Arrival . It pitted Amy Adams' gifted translator against trigger-happy generals over the question of what to do about a series of huge alien spaceships which suddenly begin hovering above the earth. This was no Independence Day,  however; instead, like the best sci-fi, it was really about something far deeper and profound, and posed a heartbreaking (and very theological) question: if you knew something beautiful would end in tragedy, would you still want to see it unfold?

Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them  was a long-awaited new foray into the Harry Potter universe, and included some great monsters and a raft of interesting new characters; ultimately though it failed to really live up to the unenviable hype. Not so with Moana , Disney's Pacific Island adventure, which featured a fantastically three-dimensional female hero and the greatest ever performance by Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson (not a huge achievement). The film might be rooted in Polynesian myth, but ideas of calling, purpose and trusting in a higher power are equally resonant with a Christian worldview. The Edge of Seventeen , a lower-budget coming of age comedy, provided a fascinating insight into the world of teenagers, and is essential viewing for any Christian who wants to engage seriously with them and their culture. It's a bit rude though.

Just as in 2015, the final month of the year was dominated by the release of one film: Rogue One: A Star Wars Story . And just as with last year's The Force Awakens , the movie delivered on expectations with a thrilling mix of dot-joining nostalgia and the breaking of brave new ground. In particular, it does a fine job of exploring what it means to live – and die – for a cause that is worthy of the ultimate sacrifice. From the sublime to the ridiculous, Office Christmas Party  was the sort of film that you can probably accurately imagine from the title, and appeared to be written by two 15-year-old boys. And as the year came to an end, Collateral Beauty  and Monster Trucks  underwhelmed early reviewers, but promising sci-fi epic  Passengers  – which had a fantastic setup involving Jennifer Lawrence  and Chris Pratt  waking up too early on a voyage into deep space – turned out to be a morally corrupt forced consent story which was apparently unaware of its own creepiness. Not a great way to end the year, so many of us went to see Rogue One again in order to finish on a high.

And my films of the year

Before you get angry with this random man on the Internet, remember that this is an entirely subjective list, based entirely on the films which I've actually seen in 2016 (which rules out Sully, Lion  and Hunt for the Wilderpeople , both of which were highly rated among viewers). And I still haven't forgiven  The Big Short  for being so unpleasant.

10. Nerve  – It might be a wild card but it's a visually-arresting dip into youth culture, and its mildly horrific central idea is worryingly plausible.

9. Midnight Special  – A perfect example of how imagination trumps budget every time; stays with you for days afterwards.

8.  Zootropolis / Zootopia  – Really funny, really smart and with a really important message. My kids love it, and I love it just as much.

7. Arrival  – A wonderfully surprising sci-fi about real people and big ideas, masterfully shot.

6. Doctor Strange  – Benedict Cumberbatch proves a worthy addition to the MCU in an endlessly-inventive fantasy tale.

5. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story  – The first Star Wars Anthology film is dark, thoughtful and regularly breathtaking.

4. Captain America: Civil War  – Far from tailing off, Marvel movies are getting better and better, this one juggling a remarkable number of well-drawn characters.

3. The Revenant  – Leonardo Di Caprio deserved everything he got for this phenomenal tale of endurance and revenge.

2. Sing Street  – Nothing made me laugh or cry as much in 2016; a truly wonderful film.

1. Spotlight  – Rightly named Best Picture at the Oscars, this tale of the relentless pursuit of justice is a cinematic masterpiece.

A list and description of ‘luxury goods’ can be found in Supplement No. 5 to Part 746 under the Federal Register.
• Items originating outside of the U.S. that are subject to the U.S. Tariff Act or related Acts concerning prohibiting the use of forced labor.

In order to protect our community and marketplace, Etsy takes steps to ensure compliance with sanctions programs. The ISLAND-OCEAN CONNECTION CHALLENGE aims to maximize the marine benefits of island conservation for ecosystems including coral reefs, and climate and community resilience. We are launching a new era of island restorations and rewilding focused on scaling and deploying this whole-systems conservation ‘multi-tool’ for optimal impact.  

Challenge partners are committed to the holistic restoration of at least 40 globally significant island ecosystems, from ridge-to-reef to benefit biodiversity, climate, and communities by 2030.  

We seek additional partners to join this collaborative and advance this novel restoration and resilience effort. Join this movement by adding your commitments, resources, projects, programs, and / or islands to this 2030 challenge.

One arrested, one at large, one recovering following robbery in White Plains

One person is arrested, one is at large and one is recovering from injuries sustained from being robbed and run over by a pickup truck.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE — Boise, ID-based metalcore outfit AsFireFalls have released their debut album, Catatonic Misery . The album is available everywhere at https://linktr.ee/asfirefalls . 

Catatonic Misery follows of slew of high-powered single releases that have stoked fans’ expectations. The album itself is a long time coming, and lands as a true labor of love. Hand-crafted by the band in their own studio, Catatonic Misery offers a blend of crushing riffs, emotive melodies, and reflective lyrics, creating an immersive experience for listeners.

Comprised of Kris Lindstrom (vocals), Nic Lindstrom (drums), Nick Gregory (guitar) and Jake Doster (guitar), the band has been built from a lifetime of musical collaboration between Kris and Nic Lindstrom — a synergy that is evident on the band’s debut project. Nick Gregory has been on board since they were teenagers looking for a guitarist on Craigslist. Although Jake has only been in the band since 2022, he’s also a longtime friend and classmate of Nic’s. The chemistry that results from lifelong friendships means AsFireFalls is able to present a cohesive, well-honed sound.

“Towards the end of COVID, we were all in a turning point in our lives,” lead singer Kris Lindstrom recalls. “Nick and Nick had gotten married. And we're all getting older. So we were like, if we’re going to do music, let’s give it a fair shot. Let’s go at it for real. We decided to write a full album, and we dove headfirst into it.”

The result was a creative outpouring that would become Catatonic Misery . Laden with potent emotional lyrics and a heavy-hitting sound, AsFireFalls makes their way through themes ranging from unrealized and painful relationships (“Know You,” “5 AM,” “Blame”) to commentary on digital darkness (“Praetorian”) to more esoteric explorations of fear and overcoming (“Mind Killer,” “Otherwise”). This musical journey is compelling and connective, giving fans many opportunities to see themselves in the lyrics.

“We’re trying to write really good music that’s not offensive, but provoking,” singer Kris Lindstrom explains. “I mostly try to go for abstract thoughts and more thought-provoking lyrics, rather than overt words. I like abstract imagery and things that can apply to multiple situations. Like it might sound like a breakup song, but it could also sound like they’re dealing with something internally.”

That dynamic is displayed well in the album’s evocative title and its corresponding title track. 

Lindstrom says of the song, “A haunting and melancholic journey into the depths of despair, ‘Catatonic Misery’ lyrically delves into the feeling of being consumed by loss and hopelessness. With a focus on the abstract, the song attempts to capture the ineffable sensations of feeling trapped, of having everything go wrong, and of losing all sense of direction. The song invites the listener to confront their own feelings of despair, and to find comfort in the knowledge that they are not alone.”

See ‘Dexter: Original Sin’ Stars vs. Their ‘Dexter’ Counterparts — And Who Could Play the Other Characters?

The first cut is the deepest, and Paramount+ With Showtime is taking us back to the start of Dexter Morgan’s vigilante murders with the upcoming series Dexter: Original Sin .

The 10-episode thriller, set 15 years before Showtime’s Emmy-nominated drama Dexter , focuses on “America’s favorite serial killer… in training,” Paramount+ With Showtime says. Dexter alum Michael C. Hall is executive-producing Original Sin alongside Clyde Phillips , who’s returning as showrunner.

“Set in 1991 Miami, Dexter: Original Sin follows Dexter as he transitions from student to avenging serial killer,” the network’s synopsis adds. “When his bloodthirsty urges can’t be ignored any longer, Dexter must learn to channel his inner darkness.”

Patrick Gibson vs. Michael C. Hall as Dexter Morgan

Gibson’s past credits include The OA , The White Princess , and Shadow and Bone . He’ll play the young Dexter as the character begins a forensics internship at the Miami Metro Police Department.

Molly Brown vs. Jennifer Carpenter as Debra Morgan

Brown recently guest-starred on FBI: International , Billions , and Evil . She’s the Original Sin version of Debra Morgan, Dexter’s younger sister and eventual coworker in Miami Metro, who is oblivious to his bloody side gig.

Christian Slater vs. James Remar as Harry Morgan

Slater, known for the film Heathers and the TV series Mr. Robot , plays Harry Morgan, a homicide detective who adopts Dexter and helps him “find and kill people who deserve to be eliminated from society without getting on law enforcement’s radar,” as Paramount+ With Showtime says.

James Martinez vs. David Zayas as Angel Batista

An alum of House of Cards and Love, Victor , Martinez takes on the role of Batista, who’s “an up-and-coming homicide detective who leads with his heart” at the time of Dexter: Original Sin .

Christina Milian vs. Luna Lauren Velez as Maria LaGuerta

The younger version of Miami Metro’s first female homicide detective, meanwhile, goes to Milian, a pop star-turned-actor recently seen in the TV series Step Up .

Alex Shimizu vs. C.S. Lee as Vince Masuka

Shimizu, who recurred on The Blacklist and will star in the upcoming Interior Chinatown , plays a younger Masuka, “a forensic analyst who eagerly shares his expertise while relishing the chance to boss around his new intern, Dexter Morgan.”

Reno Wilson plays new character Bobby Watt

Wilson, who previously starred in Mike & Molly and Good Girls , has been cast to play the new character Bobby Watt, Harry’s longtime partner and confidant.

Dove Cameron could play Rita Bennett, previously played by Julie Benz

We could see this Disney Channel alum, known for her role in the Descendants series of TV movies, succeed Benz (or precede Benz, as the case may be) in the role of Rita, the older Dexter’s love interest.

Kelvin Harrison Jr. could play James Doakes, previously played by Erik King

Harrison, star of the film Chevalier and the TV series Genius: MLK/X , would be a worthy cast addition in the role of Doakes, the Miami Metro colleague who harbors a healthy distrust for Dexter.

Logan Lerman could play Joey Quinn, previously played by Desmond Harrington

In Dexter , Harrington’s Quinn is another Miami Metro investigator with suspicions about the title character. Lerman, an alum of the Percy Jackson film series and the TV series Hunters , could portray a fresh-faced version of the character.
