Duke University is not liable for damage or loss of personal property kept in the resident’s assigned space or in other areas of University housing. Because the University does not provide property insurance, residents are encouraged to secure their own personal property insurance.

All Duke students should consider purchasing renters insurance to protect their personal property in the event that it is damaged, destroyed or stolen. Even if a student is a dependent under his or her parent's insurance, the student's personal property, may not be covered.

Talk with your parents. They should check their policy or contact their insurance agent to see what coverage you have and if renters insurance is right for you while away at school.

Housing and Residence Life (HRL) works in conjunction with the Student Disability Access Office (SDAO) to ensure consistency in evaluating special housing accommodation requests. The Student Disability Access Office reviews requests and shares approved student accommodations with HRL. Students with approved accommodations will be offered priority for placement in an available space that meets their accommodations.

Students who wish to be considered for reasonable accommodations must submit current documentation (i.e., medical/educational/diagnostic reports) from licensed physicians, psychologists, or other qualified professionals as well as supporting historical records and materials. For the purpose of receiving consideration for reasonable accommodations at Duke University, an individual must have an impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities. Information regarding the process to request an accommodation can be found on the Student Disability and Access Office  website .

Housing and Residence Life is committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of individuals of sexual misconduct. HRL will work with campus resources (Gender Violence Prevention & Intervention and the Office of Institutional Equity) and students to ensure appropriate housing options.

Housing exceptions may involve moving an individual between Duke residential areas. Housing exceptions are done on a case-by-case basis. Not all incidents will result in a move, however, if the living situation is creating a hostile environment, every effort will be made to assist with reassigning students to a similar housing situation on campus. Students should contact the Gender Violence Prevention & Intervention and the Office of Institutional Equity for assistance.

Housing and Residence Life will make good faith efforts to meet a student’s sincerely held faith practices or beliefs that conflict with a Housing and Residence Life policy, procedure, or  other  requirement. For specific housing assignment exceptions, students may submit a request for a faith-based/religious housing exception.

Faith-based / Religious exceptions are not guaranteed but will be allowed as space permits.

Please note: Requesting exceptions for religious purposes is separate from the disability accommodations process. If you are seeking housing exceptions for religious purposes and accommodations for medical conditions or disabilities, please also follow the process for requesting SDAO housing accommodations.

Duke also offers alternative move-in days for students who for religious reasons do not want to move in on either Saturday or Sunday or for whom the arrangements do not enable them to comply with their religious obligations. Students will not be penalized financially for not moving in on "move-in day" should the day/time conflict with observance of a religious holiday.

For students requesting items inside a residence hall be modified for religious observance (motion sensors, Shabbat entry) please submit a Maintenance Request and Housing and Residence Life will do our best to support all requests.

Students participating in housing processes which conflict with religious observances may contact the Housing Assignments Office for options on how to navigate. Housing Assignments my offer proxy options for room selection processes.

Assignment Policies

The forfeiture of housing eligibility occurs when a student is withdrawn from the University or is academically dismissed.

HRL will cancel housing assignments based on attrition information from the deans or program participation information from the Office of Study Abroad. The student will become eligible for housing when they are readmitted as a full-time degree seeking student.

  • Room Selection: Students who are not yet confirmed to be returning for the Fall semester may participate in room selection for Fall. If you are not an active student by July, your housing assignment will be cancelled and all associated rent and fees will be credited to your Bursar account.
  • Spring Housing: Students must be confirmed to be returning in order to request and receive a Spring housing assignment.

Full-Time Student Status Full-time undergraduate students who have lived on-campus for under eight semesters are eligible for housing. Students entering their ninth or greater semester may request housing, but will only be assigned if space is available after assigning students covered by the four-year housing guarantee.

2023-2024 Housing License & Terms

2024-2025 Housing License & Terms

North Carolina State Law (General Statutes §130A 152–157) requires that all students entering college present a certificate of immunization that documents that the student has received all immunizations required by law. While your state or country of origin may have different immunization requirements, you must comply with North Carolina laws and Duke requirements. More information can be found at the Student Health, Immunization Compliance  website .

Housing and Residence Life has worked with students and staff from Blue Devils United and the  Center for Sexual and Gender Diversity  to create new housing options that will help meet the needs of all students with respect to their gender identity and expression. Our similar-gender and all-gender housing configurations will provide continuing undergraduate students with increased opportunities to select housing that best supports their gender identity and expression.

All gender housing refers to individual rooms or suites where the gender of the roommates is not taken into consideration when the room is assigned through the assignment process. All gender housing is located across East and the Upperclass Campuses. While this is intended to support students who identify as LGBTQIA, this is available to all students who feel they would be more comfortable in a all gender room/suite or feel they could provide a safe and inclusive space for another student regardless of gender identity/expression, sexual/romantic orientation, or any other factor.

West Campus students are now able to select a housing space with any continuing student - regardless of that student’s gender identity. The majority of space within each Quad will have bedrooms where roommates may share similar gender identities and live on floors where the students next door may not share their gender identity. Each floor with all-gender housing configurations will have gender non-specific and gender-specific restrooms. In addition, each Quad will also include options for similar-gender suites/floors and all-gender suites/floors to provide more choices for students to find the space that is right for them.

If you have questions or need support in navigating these new housing options, please feel free to connect with the  Center for Sexual and Gender Diversity  ([email protected]) or  Housing Assignments  ([email protected]).

All students are required—to the extent that housing is available—to live on campus for their first three years. We will continue to apply semesters spent in “study away” programs toward the three-year residency requirement. Students are guaranteed the opportunity to live on campus during their fourth year. (See note below.)

Students may choose to live off campus at the completion of their third year. Students who wish to live off campus must notify Housing and Residence Life (HRL) in writing of their plans by the published deadlines. Students choosing to live off campus should be aware that they will be subject to all city ordinances, particularly those related to occupancy, noise, parking, and litter.

Active students still bound by the three-year requirement who do not have an on-campus housing assignment will be contacted to make arrangements for an assignment. Students will be charged for the room size to which they are assigned. Students who do not follow through on an assignment request will be charged for the room size most commonly occupied by members of their class year.

Note: Our long-term goal is to provide on-campus housing for all students during their first three years and for any senior who wishes to remain on campus. However, new construction and renovations may result in a temporary shortfall in housing availability. In some cases we may modify the three-year residency requirement, resulting in some juniors as well as some seniors living off campus. In addition, during the new construction and renovation process the university may temporarily suspend the four-year housing guarantee for seniors. We look forward ultimately to providing housing to any seniors who wish to remain on campus.

Students returning to Duke after a leave of absence of any kind remain subject to the Board of Trustees policy requiring all Duke undergraduate students to live in university housing for three academic years (Six semesters) as a Duke student. Resident students who take a leave of absence for personal reasons may return as residents provided they follow the HRL procedures and deadlines. Duke guarantees housing to all of its full-time undergraduate students, save those who are not eligible due to disciplinary sanctions.

You may contact housing regarding your residency while your return application is under review. Students without a housing assignment will be required to apply and will be assigned once they have been approved for return. Students with a housing assignment, who are separated from the University, will have their housing cancelled and will be required to reapply once approved for return.

Students returning to Duke from a leave of absence (and who are subject to the residency requirement noted above) who fail to request housing will receive an assignment and be financially responsible for the term of the assignment.

Housing and Residence Life (HRL) works in conjunction with the Student Disability Access Office (SDAO) to ensure consistency in evaluating special housing accommodation requests. The Student Disability and Access Office reviews requests and shares approved student accommodations with HRL.

Information regarding the process to request an accommodation can be found on the Student Disability and Access Office  website

Students returning to Duke after a separation of any kind should work with the Time Away Office to manage their return process. You may contact housing assignments regarding your residency status while your Time Away Return Form is under review.

  • Students without a housing assignment will be required to apply and are assigned once approved for return.
  • Students with a housing assignment, who take time-off from the University, can decline housing and apply once approved for return.

Duke is committed to encouraging and sustaining a learning and work community that is free from prohibited discrimination and harassment. The institution prohibits discrimination on the basis of age, color, disability, gender, gender identity, gender expression, genetic information, national origin, race, religion, sex, sexual orientation, or veteran status, in the administration of its educational policies, admission policies, financial aid, employment, or any other institution program or activity. It admits qualified students to all the rights, privileges, programs, and activities generally accorded or made available to students.

HRL affirms the sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, and preferred names of its students and staff and strives to create environments where everyone can flourish.

If you have any questions about Gender Inclusive Housing, you can contact  MJ Williams , the Director of Housing Assignments and Planning in HRL, or  Angel Collie , Interim Director of the Center for Sexual and Gender Diversity.

Students returning prior to the official move-in dates, have to be authorized by an individual department or athletic program. If you are part of an approved group, you do not need to complete an individual early arrival request, but you will have to review and agree to the Early Arrival Terms and Conditions. This will be done through a separate process. Your group will provide HRL with a list of students, but you should confirm with your group that you are on the list they have provided us.

Individuals

Individual student early arrival is intended for continuing and incoming students who need to return or arrive prior to the official move-in dates, in order to attend due to personal, college-related business, tasks, and/or other exceptional circumstances. Housing Policies: What You Need to Know

  • Students admitted to the University as a "resident" are guaranteed three consecutive years (six consecutive semesters) of on-campus housing, beginning with the Fall semester of the academic year of their admission. Students who forego a semester(s) of housing for any reason (i.e. participation in a study abroad or internship program, deferred acceptance) are not guaranteed additional semester(s) of housing in their fourth year.
  • Housing assignments are made based on year of entry rather than credit hours.
  • Housing for a fourth year is not guaranteed , except to students who are admitted to the University with Presidential or certain scholarships that specifically guarantee a fourth year of housing. There is an annual housing lottery for seniors interested in on-campus housing.
  • First-year students may be housed in any section of campus, including Main, South and West campuses .
  • First-year students are housed by gender on each wing or floor. The residence halls are typically co-educational as a whole. First-year students may be housed in  single, double, triple or quad rooms .

Housing Rates

Current Housing Rates

Please visit the Bursar's Office website for details regarding Housing Rates.

Room Change Process

Residents interested in changing their housing assignments must complete a room change request online and should speak with their Resident Assistant. In all cases, changes must be approved by Residence Life. In the event that a request is precipitated by a roommate conflict, room changes will normally only be approved after other methods of resolving the conflict have been attempted. Mediation of conflicts may be sought from the Residence Life staff, but every effort should be made by the residents to resolve issues among themselves. If conflict resolution is unsuccessful, the student initiating the request will be granted a room change, subject to availability.

Note: Room changes are not typically made within the first two weeks of a semester.

The semester cost for housing may vary from room to room. Students accepting a room change may be charged more or less, depending on their new housing assignment. Before accepting a room change, please be certain to review current room rates. Costs will be prorated in accordance with the date of the room change.

Break Housing

Residence Life will make every effort to accommodate students who cannot leave campus during break periods. Depending on the length of the break period and the demand for housing, students may either be:

  • permitted to remain in their own room, or
  • asked to consolidate into another building for reasons of safety and security.

In order to remain on campus during a break period, students must register via the housing portal .

  • All University policies and terms of the housing contract remain in effect for students who remain in residence during break periods.
  • Please note that Dining Halls are closed and meal plans are not active during break periods. For more information, please see Dining Services .

Fall, Thanksgiving, Spring, and Easter Breaks

  • Given the demand for housing, residence halls will remain open during the Fall, Thanksgiving, Spring, and Easter Breaks for students who register online.

Christmas/Winter Break

  • For reasons of safety and security, the University closes all but a few halls during this break period.
  • Students who must stay on campus during this break for a University-sponsored program, may be required to take up temporary residence in a hall other than their own during this time.

Senior Week

  • Graduating seniors and sponsored students participating in Commencement activities may register to remain in residence during this break period.
  • One dining hall will remain open for approved students during senior week.

Fire Safety Procedures

Mold and mildew prevention.

A report of suspected mold may be made using the maintenance request form , or by calling (610) 519-4420, from 8 a.m.–3 p.m. During other hours, please call Public Safety at (610) 519-6979, which will contact Facilities personnel for an in-person response.

Below is additional information related to reports of suspected mold:

  • Any time the University receives a report of suspected mold in a residence hall, there is a swift and coordinated response from Villanova’s Offices of Environmental Health and Safety, Facilities Management, and Residence Life.
  • When the report references an air conditioning unit, our Maintenance Department immediately cleans it appropriately, whether we believe there is mold or not.
  • When the reported concern is unrelated to an air conditioning unit, the room is first evaluated by trained staff from our Environmental Health and Safety Team who use the Dampness and Mold Assessment Tool created by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health—a branch of the CDC.

When mold is identified, we work quickly to address the situation by:

  • Cleaning and disinfecting affected areas.
  • Assessing and ensuring proper air circulation.
  • Having maintenance staff check the HVAC unit to make sure it’s working optimally.
  • Providing a dehumidifier (delivered within 24 hours) in instances where the humidity levels are found to be elevated.
  • As a note: The air conditioning and ventilation in the residence hall rooms are not interconnected. Each room has an individual air conditioning unit. So, an issue in one room is not symptomatic of a larger issue within the entire residence hall.

Login and select Undergraduate Summer Housing Application and follow the prompts *Axess may require you to reauthenticate when selecting the Housing & Dining Login.

Summer quarter housing applications are due April 22, 2024. Stanford students applying for both summer and autumn quarter housing must file two applications, one for summer quarter and one for autumn quarter.

The Summer Housing Allocation process uses a computer-based assignment program that prioritizes students' first choice of residence listed on their housing application. If the first choice is unavailable, the program will move on to the second choice and so on. It is recommended that students create a comprehensive list of preferred residences in order of priority.

Students will be assigned housing based on their cohort and housing allocation number. For Stanford students, the housing allocation number is based on class year, with current and rising-seniors getting the best numbers. Visiting students are assigned a random housing allocation number. If a student is currently living in a summer housing location and they rank their current housing assignment as their first choice, they will receive a priority to remain in that residence and room for summer quarter. A priority is not a guarantee so all students should create a robust list of housing choices on their housing applications.

Housing Accommodations

Medical accommodations.

Students who have specific housing needs due to a disability or documented medical condition should file a summer quarter Housing Accommodation Request Form with the Office of Accessible Education by April 15, 2024 and apply for housing in Axess by April 22, 2024.

Religious Observance Request

Stanford is a diverse community with students from many religious backgrounds. We understand that some students may desire specific housing placements or modifications due to their religious beliefs or practices. The application outlines what religious observance requests can be made at Stanford in summer undergraduate housing and the process for registering such a request. Be sure to read the religious observance request page carefully and follow all of the steps if you are interested in making a religious observance request for housing. Please note the deadline to apply for summer quarter housing with a religious observance request is Monday, April 22, 2024. If you have religious needs that are not on the list on the application, you should submit a request through the Office of Religious & Spiritual Life by April 15, 2024.

Groups and Roommate Finding

On your application, you will be able to form a group by clicking “Roommate Groups (Optional)” after submitting your application. Groups can be composed of up to four students. If you are the first of your group to apply, you will establish a group name and password. If you are joining a group, you will enter the name and password established by the first group member to apply. Students will be able to edit the group information on their housing applications until April 22, 2024.

Roommate Finding

This year, the summer housing application is moving to a new platform, which allows for additional functionality. On your application, you will be asked to answer a series of profile questions. These questions can help you if you do not currently have a housing group and are looking to find someone with whom to form a group. While everyone is required to answer the questions, you can choose to hide this information from other students.   To use the roommate finding function, select “Roommate Groups (Optional)” after submitting your application and then click “Suggest Roommates.” Based on your responses, you will see a compatibility percentage for other students who have submitted applications and chosen not to keep their profile information hidden. The number of students visible in roommate finding will increase as more students submit applications. While students’ names are not visible in roommate finding, you can see students’ gender identity and cohort, as well as their responses to the profile questions. If you would like to form a group with someone, you can send them a message through the housing system in order to introduce yourself. To check for received messages, click the hamburger menu next to Home and select “Messages.” Please note that messages sent through the housing portal are accessible to R&DE Student Housing Assignments. Please exercise caution if you mutually determine to communicate outside of the housing portal.

Students in groups are encouraged to:

  • Stay in contact with your group to ensure your choices are the same (if desired).
  • Verify that each person in your group applies by the deadline and receives a confirmation email after submitting the housing application.
  • If any members of the group are requesting a medical accommodation or religious observance request for housing, they should be sure to alert the rest of the group, as the housing assignment for the entire group will be based on the needs of the student(s) in the group who have received a medical accommodation or made a religious observance request. All group members will need to apply by April 22, 2024.
  • Larger groups are more likely to be split or to be assigned to a lower-ranked choice, as there are a limited number of spaces available in each residence and room type, and these are further divided by gender. Students can edit their applications, including group information, up until the April 22, 2024 application deadline.

I can’t imagine my Stanford experience without on-campus housing. Living alone is a new experience for me, and it’s great to make friends to share that with. Resident fellows do a great job of creating fun and educational programming. It’s the perfect excuse to step away from studying and engage with my neighbors.

Summer Move Out and Financial Liability

Students in summer housing who check out before their originally requested summer check-out date will be prorated the daily housing rate through their actual check-out date (removal of items from the room and surrender of keys to the Area Office).  Once a student checks out of summer housing, that decision is final, and the student cannot return to a space in summer housing.

  • Any residents with a Fall 2024 housing assignment who move out by July 13 at Noon at the end of Summer Session 1 Extended  will be credited the unused days of the summer housing bill. Anyone still in room at this deadline will be financially liable for the remainder of the summer.
  • Any residents without a Fall 2024 housing assignment must check out by August 16. On that date, you will have to complete a full check-out by 4:00 pm. If you choose to check out earlier than August 16, you will receive a credit for the unused remaining days of your summer housing agreement.
  • Residents with fall assignments in a location besides West Apartments will pick up the key to their fall assignment on Sunday, August 11, between 10AM-1:00PM and complete a check-out of West Apartments by August 12 by 4PM.

BU officials talk differences in summer housing, remote jobs for third LfA session

As the end of the Spring semester approaches, Boston University is preparing for its summer terms in the Learn from Anywhere format — the third and likely final LfA implementation.

student village 2 at 33 harry agganis way

Although COVID-19 vaccine distribution is well underway in Massachusetts, with Phase Three for individuals who are 16 and older in Massachusetts to begin April 19, the University has moved some of its in-person programs and internships that typically come with on-campus housing to a remote format.

BU spokesperson Colin Riley said the University will continue to provide housing for students participating in summer courses, though not for other programs.

“We typically have a very active use of housing during the summer for events and conferences,” Riley said. “Other programs, high school programs, camps, educational opportunities, those are not being held.”

However, he said housing will be available for BU summer session students, the Class of 2024 College of General Studies’ Boston-New England Program and those involved in the Center for English Language and Orientation Programs.

Traditionally, on-campus summer jobs such as orientation and other event-planning programs provide summer housing for students. However, similar to the previous year, many summer jobs did not grant on-campus housing this year because those positions became virtual, said Kevin Lynch, assistant manager at BU’s Student Employment Office.

“I think each one of those departments [offered remote positions] just because of the pandemic and how most things have gone online,” Lynch said. “I don’t think they are offering housing this year or for this summer, unfortunately.”

Shiney James, director of orientation at BU, said summer orientation positions such as program coordinators, who usually require in-person training over the summer, would not include housing this year.

“Our training this coming summer will be remote too,” James said, “because we need to help our staff to have a presence online to engage with students and start up a conversation.”

James added that orientation programs would be moved online to avoid creating crowded environments on campus that could risk the health of BU staff and students.

“Before the pandemic, we hosted orientations in person and we would have 600 to 800 students come,” James said. “Since the pandemic, which started last year, we’ve been doing a live remote orientation because there’s so many folks in stay-in-place orders, and we wanted to make sure folks are safe, as well as abide to state and local guidelines about gatherings in person.”

While the number of in-person jobs have declined, Lynch said job opportunities overall have stayed the same due to an increase in remote positions.

“Jobs that didn’t happen over the academic year were really made up for by [virtual] jobs,” Lynch said. “The classroom moderator position, for instance, which was a new position that was created from the pandemic, and then all of the positions that were created at all of the testing facilities as well.”

While there has been a potential decline of in-person, on-campus jobs offered by the University, Lynch said it is still too early to determine whether the number of jobs providing free housing for the upcoming summer have decreased.

To accommodate COVID-19 guidelines, Riley said students staying over the summer will need to continue taking COVID-19 tests and filling out the daily symptom surveys. The University will also provide quarantine and isolation housing for on-campus students when required.

“We put in place, with the best guidance, all these public health measures and protocols, and it’s worked by and large, it’s enabled us to continue through the Fall and into the Spring,” Riley said. “It’s been a very challenging year for everybody, and I think we’re all hopeful that it will be over or in the rearview mirror soon.”

Boston University Summer Challenge: Should You Go?

Extracurriculars

body_BU.png

In this guide, I'll be discussing the Boston University Summer Challenge, a summer program for high school students at Boston University.  During the program, students take non-credit college-level courses, live on campus, and explore all that BU and Boston have to offer.

While you can read about this program on the BU Summer Challenge website , the information available is somewhat spotty and what is there can be difficult to dissect. For this reason, I spoke to the program coordinators and gathered everything you need to know about the program into this easy-to-read guide. I’ve created a Table of Contents so you can find the specific info you need, but I suggest reading the entire article in order:

  • What Is the BU Summer Challenge? What Do You Do?
  • Why Should You Attend?
  • How To Apply and Application Requirements
  • How Much Does It Cost?
  • Tips on How to Get In

What Is the Boston University Summer Challenge? What Activities Do Participants Do?

The Boston University Summer Challenge is a two-week program for rising high school sophomore, juniors, and seniors that offers a preview of college life.  During each of the three summer sessions, between 100 and 300 high school take two non-credit seminars and live on BU’s campus in the dorms.

As a participant, you choose a morning seminar and afternoon seminar . In between your morning and afternoon seminars, you have lunch in one of BU's dining halls. After your afternoon seminar and on weekends, you participate in organized social activities such as exploring areas of Boston, shopping, seeing improv shows, and more . The exact social programming will vary from year to year.

You also have plenty of free time to do your seminar assignments, explore Boston on your own, and explore BU's campus (you'll have free access to the libraries and can  purchase a short-term membership to Boston University's Fitness & Recreation Center ).

In your seminars, you'll be expected to attend lectures, engage in discussions, attend field trips, and complete individual work, group work, and project-based assignments . The seminars have small class sizes (10 to 24 students)  to ensure that you get sufficient attention from your experienced college instructors as you are challenged with the college-level material taught in your seminar. Each seminar ends with a final in-class presentation. At the end of the summer (typically, in August/September), a certificate of completion and letters of evaluation from both seminar instructors will be sent to you.

Listed below are the seminars that were offered in Summer 2015. (Summer 2016 seminars have not yet been announced.)

Morning Seminars

  • Abnormal Psychology
  • Business: From the Ground Up
  • Chemistry of Medicine
  • Creative Writing
  • Electrical Engineering
  • The History of Boston
  • International Politics
  • Visual Arts

Afternoon Seminars

  • Communication
  • Computer Science
  • Infectious Diseases
  • Persuasive Writing
  • Photography

Who’s Eligible for the BU Summer Challenge Program?

The basic application requirements for all applicants are:

  • Be a rising high school sophomore, junior, or senior

If you’re an international student, you also must meet the following qualifications:

  • Have a valid passport
  • Have health insurance

While these are the only requirements needed to apply, there are more qualifications that will help you get in. Read those below in our Tips on How to Get In section.

body_calendar.png

What Are the Program Dates for Summer 2016?

The programs dates for Summer 2016 are:

  • Session 1: June 19 - July 1, 2016
  • Session 2: July 10 - July 22, 2016
  • Session 3: July 24 - August 5, 2016

Why Should You Attend the BU Summer Challenge Program?

I’d highly recommend doing the Boston University Summer Challenge if you can afford it and it works in your summer schedule. I participated in a similar program at UCLA, and the program helped me figure out whether I was interested in attending UCLA (which I found out I wasn’t) and what kind of coursework I wanted to pursue. I’ve broken down the pros and cons of attending the program below.

Pros of BU Summer Challenge

Test out BU to see if it’s the right college for you.

Take non-credit college courses  to help figure out what you might be interested in majoring in (you could find out you hate art and want to study biology or vice versa). I t's better to figure this out in high school rather than halfway through college when you've already spent a lot of time and money on classes you ended up not liking.

Receive two letters of evaluation  (one from each of your seminar teachers) at the end of the program, which could be used as supplementary letters of recommendation for college.

As a residential student for two weeks, you get to test out living away from home for the first time. My friends and I who did the UCLA summer program struggled a lot less with homesickness once we started college than our peers.

Have a college program on your resume for your college applications.

While there is no guarantee of admissions and no guarantee that participating will better your chances of admission, the BU admissions office likes to see that you’ve shown a significant interest in the university. Doing this program will show them your interest.

Cons of BU Summer Challenge

Expensive (I discuss the exact cost below).

You can't get college credit while some similar programs such as the Emory Pre-College Program do offer classes for credit.

No financial aid available while at some other programs such as the Emory Pre-College Program, there is financial aid available.

How to Apply and Application Requirements

Applications are accepted on a rolling basis beginning in the January before the summer session.  You typically receive a response via email within three weeks of submitting your application. The application deadline for summer 2016 has not yet been posted. It will be posted on the BU Summer Challenge website after December 15th.   However, as the website says, students who apply earlier " are more likely to receive the session and seminar selections of their choice, " so you should submit your application ASAP.

To apply, you must:

Pay a $50 non-refundable application fee paid by credit card.

Complete an online application that includes a 500 - 750-word personal statement describing why you want to attend the BU Summer Challenge Program.

Email a copy of your complete high school transcript , including your fall grades, to [email protected].

Additionally, international students must:

Complete an international student form.

Submit a copy of your passport.

If the primary language of instruction at your high school is not English, you will likely be asked to provide proof of proficiency such as a TOEFL score (though this is on a case by case basis).

body_money-12.jpg

How Much Does BU Summer Challenge Cost?

The fee for the BU Summer Challenge includes tuition, housing, and all meals in the dining hall. It also includes textbooks and all sponsored activities during the two-week program.  The program cost for the BU Summer Challenge in 2015 was $3730.  This may be changing for Summer 2016, but it hasn’t yet been announced. Additionally, as I mentioned earlier, there is a $50 non-refundable application fee (which will stay the same in 2016).

Is There Financial Aid?

Unfortunately, there is no financial aid available for this program. However, I have some advice for quick ways to raise money if you're hoping to attend but can't afford tuition:

  • Try using an online crowdfunding platform such as Go Ennounce (which is specifically for students looking to fundraise), Go Fund Me , or IndieGoGo .
  • Write letters  to friends, family, employers, local businesses and churches asking for support.
  • Reach out to civic organizations in your area , such as Rotary and Kiwanis, to see if they could offer a scholarship.

3 Tips on Fundraising Your BU Summer Challenge Tuition

Tip #1: When you write your explanation on the crowdfunding platform, write your letters to the community, or reach out to civic organizations, make sure you share your personal story and explain why the BU Summer Challenge program is important to you and will help you achieve your future goals. This explanation should be similar to your personal statement for the program (which, as I said above, asks you to describe  why you want to attend the BU Summer Challenge Program).

Tip #2: Share your fundraising campaign on social media and ask your friends and family to share your campaign on their social media if they're unable to donate.

Tip #3: Write a thank you note for every donation you receive.

Tips on How to Get Accepted

If you’re hoping to attend the Boston University Summer Challenge, your high school transcript and personal statement need to show you off in a positive light.

While there is no specific GPA required for admission, the program coordinators said they preferred applicants with at least a 3.0 unweighted GPA.  To have the best shot of being accepted, you should try to get your unweighted GPA at or above a 3.0. While you may not have a lot of time before applying, there are ways to raise your GPA fast.

The BU Summer Challenge Program does not tell the public its acceptance rate, but the program website says they look for " motivated high school students who are taking a college preparatory curriculum. Your high school transcript and personal statement are both taken into account when admission decisions are made." Additionally, I spoke to the program coordinators who indicated that most students with a 3.0 or higher are accepted into the program.

For your personal statement, make sure you show off your personality, explain your love for BU, and explain why you want to be a part of the Summer Challenge. If you need help writing the personal statement, read our other great guide with tips on writing a personal statement.

Summer Jobs With Housing

Does anyone know what summer jobs will pay for students to stay on campus over the summer? I would like to take classes but housing here is ridiculously expensive, even if I sublet an apartment.

I know orientation is a big one, yet I have not been able to find the application for it anywhere as all the links I have found are either broken or several years old, and the application seems to just be nonexistent. If anyone has it please drop it here. If anyone knows of other jobs that would be helpful as well.
