13 Best Free Church Presentation Software for Easy Worship

It’s always amusing to see some folks still using PowerPoint to project song lyrics during worship.

I mean it’s such a painfully inefficient way of doing things—especially when there are so many superior and free church presentation software that take just a few clicks to setup and get going.

If you want a PowerPoint alternative or simply want to learn more about the best church presentation software available for free to support your worship services, you should read this article.

A screen displaying lyrics and Bible texts is more or less replacing printed material at most places of worship. Depending on how it is used, the screen can be a purposeful aid or an unfortunate distraction.

Choosing the right church software to run your slides is therefore an important decision to support the worship environment.

If you’re on a tight budget, here are a number of free worship software in no particular order that offer a variety of features to suit your church presentation needs.

13 of the best free presentation software for easy worship in your church

presentation in church

One of the most popular open source worship presentation program out there, OpenLP packs a ton of features for managing and displaying songs, Bible verses, images, videos (not video backgrounds though) and more.

It facilitates custom alerts, Bible import through CSV files, CCLI/SongSelect integration, PowerPoint file import etc.

Managing worship songs

  • OpenLP can import songs from a wide variety of sources like Easyslides, Opensong, Videopsalm, Zionworx, DreamBeam, MediaShout etc.
  • You can tag verse types, preset verse sequence, add formatting and manage songwriter information
  • A quick song search is also available

Managing Bible verses

  • Bibles can be imported from OSIS by the CrossWire Bible Society, any CSV file, OpenSong, Zefania etc.
  • You can even download a few selected verses from a Bible site, display verses in many custom formats, easily search verses by scripture reference (e.g. John 3:16-17) or by a search phrase to add into your set list
  • OpenLP integrates with one of the most popular open source media player of our times: VLC!
  • This means you can use almost any video / audio file format in OpenLP that is compatible with VLC

Slides and templates

  • OpenLP can be used to set up custom liturgies/set lists as per your church’s needs
  • Announcements, alerts or custom slides are also possible—custom slides can also be looped if required
  • OpenLP also integrates with PowerPoint, PowerPoint Viewer, LibreOffice Impress on Windows and LibreOffice Impress on Linux/FreeBSD. Imported presentations (sermon slides for example) can be controlled from inside OpenLP
  • Support for video background is under development. However, you can use a transparent theme as a workaround for now until this feature rolls out

Extra cool features

  • OpenLP also has a FREE Android remote app to control the presentation from anywhere inside your church using an Android device—as far as I know, this is a first of its kind app!
  • Built-in stage view accessible from any device with a web browser. Use any device on the local network as your stage monitor, meaning unlimited stage monitors without any extra hardware constraints.
  • Ability to add backing tracks to songs
  • OpenLP is available for Windows, Linux, Mac or FreeBSD

OpenLP is a fantastic option for anyone looking for a free and feature-packed church presentation software.

2. OpenSong

presentation in church

If you need a super simple, free and easy worship presentation software, then look no further than OpenSong.

It may not have all kinds of bells and whistles when it comes to features, but it does just enough to meet the most important church projection software requirements.

  • OpenSong can easily double up as a worship song management tool—you can type in songs yourself or import them from CCLI’s SongSelect
  • Or you can always go to any site providing lyrics and chords for worship songs and just copy paste from there
  • Songs can be stored with chords, which of course won’t appear in presented slides. There’s a quick song transpose option also if you want to practice a song in a different key—it’s extremely convenient for musicians
  • OpenSong also provides many free song packs in various languages to help get you started
  • OpenSong’s website hosts a wide variety of Bibles that you can download for free and import into your system.
  • Zefania XML Bibles, NRSV, NIV, KJV and more are available and supported for import apart from Bibles in other languages (French, Filipino, Portuguese, German etc.)
  • Any image file can be set as a background for songs and Bible verses
  • Fonts, colors etc. can be custom formatted separately for song slides, scripture slides and alerts
  • While video backgrounds are not natively supported, it’s not completely impossible either if you can learn this workaround
  • With OpenSong, you can present songs, Bible verses and alerts specifying the order of slides, such as verse 1, then chorus, then verse 2, then bridge, then chorus again and so on
  • You can also present a preset timed loop of defined slides, create custom set lists in just a few minutes, search and find any Bible verse or song in seconds.
  • OpenSong can be installed on Windows, Mac and Linux machines.

OpenSong is great for anyone switching from PowerPoint—its simplicity and ease-of-use (I’ve taught people to use it in like 10-15 minutes flat!) make it a standout option!

I appreciate the good work doing to help spread the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ. Thanks so much. Please help with the various websites to get downloads for my church.

You can also use Worship.NET – Available at https://sourceforge.net/projects/worship-net/ It’s made for ministry members who may not have much experience or expertise in managing lyrics, with it’s intuitive and simple-to-use design.

Hi all, Looking for a software that can be run directly from touch on a MS Surface Go2 10″ screen. Installed Open LP but lots of RMB required. Icons just too small on this screen. Cheers – Paul in NZ

' data-tf-not-load src=

Sorry, not aware of a software for that specific requirement.

' data-tf-not-load src=

We used MediaShout in my previous parish. When one of our volunteer projectionists could not be there, we used an IPad 9.7 to remotely control the video. It was a bit small. An IPad Pro is preferable. We used the IPad Pro 12′ as well. Since MediaShout is both available in Windows and MacOS, there never was any problem controlling the program remotely, without physically using the “projection booth” (where the control computer is located).

I don’t know about the other programs but I think it should be possible with any other program, since we did it using Teamviewer which is a program allowing you to use any computer on your network in remote.

Another option is called Song of Songs http://www.songofsongs.co.uk/

A chart summarising & comparing these would add a great deal of value to the article.

Good suggestion Peter, will try to get it done.

Another option worth mentioning is Big Screen. It is cloud based and works in your browser. You can read more about it here: https://bigscreen.show

I still fall back to PowerPoint. I have tried various other products, and while they can do some creative and different things, they all seem to be unable to do some essential thing. One of my main gripes is that many of them cannot do the simple task of displaying a verse with a section of it in a different color for emphasis. In the end, it is just easier and quicker to create my songs and sermon verses in PowerPoint. No CCLI plugin, but I have many songs already created and ready to go anyway. Why reinvent the wheel?

' data-tf-not-load src=

Just thought I’d point out that VideoPsalm can do this. Once you select your Verse(s) and add them to your agenda, you can right click them to convert them into an editable format in which you can do colors, fonts, and all kinds of things.

' data-tf-not-load src=

Exactly what I need too. People don’t want to see the bible verse by verse, a highlighted verse is way better.

VideoPsalm is an awesome piece of software. As a fledgling church, we were looking for presentation software that was free since we had no budget. I tried a few different ones but ended up with VideoPsalm. There is a learning curve to get started but once you get the hang of it, it’s incredibly easy to use. I can’t think of a feature I’ve needed that it couldn’t do. Video background, song imports, multiple import formats (PPT, PDF, etc), and more. Support is also great. I’ve emailed the author a few times and always get a prompt response. If you’re looking for church presentation software, even if you have a huge budget, check out VideoPsalm and you’ll love it.

Kel I cant get access to the videopsalm site to download the software. any help?

It’s available here: https://myvideopsalm.weebly.com/download.html

Is this video mapping software that will allow you to project custom animation?

If you choose a video compatible software, you can project just about any video file.

' data-tf-not-load src=

Well done. I am currently spearheading our media team in church and we recently bought a video camera. I would like to know if there is any software that i can connect the camera to the computer so it can be projected.

Would appreciate your feedback. Thanks

Hi, we have been using Mediashout 3.5 for about 10 years, all of a sudden it just stopped working. The new version won’t run on this old computer, and when I installed on my own newer, the program is so completely different I cant comprehend myself having time to learn it, and then teach a bunch of student volunteers. Our needs are very simple. ALL of our songs and readings are already in MS Word .doc files. We don’t use any published songbooks or bibles, no video, no audio, no pdf, nothing. I only need a program that can handle matching the pages already set up in the .doc file (text is 48 pt) and populate it onto multiple slides. That’s it. Old mediashout did that just fine. New mediashout has way more features than we will ever use, and I just don’t have time to learn it.

I just tried VideoPsalm, and although it appears it should be able to do that, it doesn’t. Before I try the other 12 on the list, if anyone knows one that has just this one function, I would really appreciate it. Thanks.

' data-tf-not-load src=

this was very informative! I knew there had to be options other than PPT. I use Mac OS, so it helps knowing with programs are supported. Thanks for sharing!

You’re welcome!

Not sure. But VideoPsalm (and OpenSong too I think) has converters for your existing song library, maybe you could try that.

Do any of the free software’s listed provide for a separate output to OBS (Open Broadcaster Software) so that Worshipers can see a projected screen with whatever background image is selected, and OBS sees a transparent screen with white text to use as an overlay?

Hello! I read this article with great interest. We are a Reform Jewish congregation in Scottsdale, Arizona, looking to add “presentation software” for our monthly Rock Shabbat and similar services. Are you aware of (on-line) resources for song lyrics, Torah scripture, background video that would be applicable to our congregation? Thanks!!

Sorry, not aware of a resource for that.

There is also Cantara ( https://cantara.app ), a free open source and very simple Song Presentation Software which we use in our congregation for years and really like it due to its simplicity. Maybe you can add it to the list!

While there are dedicated church presentation tools, you can use standard slideshow tools to create a presentation. The good part of these tools are you may already know how to use them. Plus, there are several great free options, such as:

  • Microsoft PowerPoint ( Free Office Live Version or any premium version)
  • LibreOffice Impress
  • Google Slides
  • Zoho Show (some features are free, others are premium only)

If you’re just getting started with basic presentations, these are great tools to get your feet wet. However, if you’re looking for something more robust, you’ll want to branch out from the basic tools.

OpenLP is a free open source church worship presentation tool designed to give you the freedom to create presentations they way you want. It’s also regularly updated, giving you even more features and support over time.

Easily import songs, video content, Bible verses (import full Bibles for use or just certain verses), pictures and more. Create custom slides to play and loop or control them manually. You can easily control your presentation using the web, iOS or Android app.

EasySlides is one of the more simple church presentation tools. It’s made to project Bible verses and song lyrics during worship services. The great part is it’s completely free to use.

If you’re mainly creating presentations to encourage more engagement during services, EasySlides is a good option. It’s also updated on a regular basis, completely for free.

VideoPsalm’s website may look a bit dated, but their presentation software is not only powerful, but free. They call the software mission-ware as it aids churches on their mission to spread God’s word.

VideoPsalm is compatible with many other church presentation tools, including EasySlides, MediaShout, PowerPoint, VerseView and more. This makes it easy to import presentations you’ve already created in other tools.

The free help library includes detailed tutorials and guidance to help you get started quickly. Plus, there are numerous Bibles and songbooks for you to import and pull information from. This makes finding what you need even easier.

Some of the other main features include:

  • Quick search features
  • Create image and video slideshows
  • Play music along with lyrics
  • Create live video feed background
  • Add music chords to lyrics
  • Quick editing modes
  • Organization tools to keep track of what you’re using

With 24/7 support, this is one free tool that’s hard to pass on.

presentation in church

BibleShow is another completely free church presentation tool. It’s only compatible with Windows though. This is one of the more basic tools as it only supports Bible verses instead of songs too.

It comes complete with hundreds of themes to use. There are also multiple Bibles and translations to choose from. It’s easy to project or use on any connected video device. You can even stream your presentation for live online worship.

Create a searchable list of favorite verses for quicker access. However, built-in search features allow you to search the Bible versions you’ve imported.

If you want more control over your slides and want to go beyond scripture, BibleShow might not be for you. Otherwise, it’s a nice light-weight tool especially if you have older equipment.

Lyricue isn’t just for churches. It’s made for live events, such as worship services and concerts. As the name implies, it’s main purpose is displaying song lyrics for a more interactive event. However, you can present more than just lyrics.

You can also add text passages, such as scripture or important takeaways. This makes it easy to ensure your members not only hear, but see the most important parts of your sermon.

One immensely useful feature is live editing. Even if your presentation is being shown, you can edit on the fly. See a typo? Edit in seconds. This is ideal if your church is hosting a live event and you want to add impromptu notes during the event. Or, if you need to change lyrics quickly.

You can also add text over a live feed, which is ideal if you’re live streaming . It’s easy to create custom screens for lyrics and verses. You can even create playlists for autoplay presentations.

FreeWorship has a free and premium version. For simple church presentations, the free version is really all you need. However, if you want additional support, more integrations with other tools and more advanced search features, you’ll need the premium version for $13.67/month.

In the free version, you create customized presentations using FreeWorship’s intuitive interface. Add song lyrics, videos, images and Bible verses. Create custom slide sets for your church events.

The premium version does make it easier to add songs and verses thanks to SongSelect integration and an advanced Bible search function. This can help save valuable time. Unlike other free options on this list, you have to pay for addition Bibles, which start at $13.67 each.

Praisenter is one of the more straightforward church presentation tools. It’s made specifically to help churches create more engaging presentations without spending a dime. You don’t even have to register with your email address.

Praisenter uses The Unbound Bible to allow you to import various translations, based on your church’s needs. This is completely free. Import song lyrics or create your own. You can add unlimited lyrics. Plus, you can organize all your songs to make them easier to find when you need them.

Create fully custom slides, complete with transition effects. Every aspect of the slides can be edited. Add engaging images, video and audio to your slides. There’s even a media library built-in for managing your files.

You can even display alerts with ease. Let a member know they left their lights on or remind members about a meeting after services.

The only downside is the software hasn’t been updated in years, which is why it doesn’t have a very modern look. However, it still works well.

presentation in church

Datasoul is another free and open source church presentation tool. It’s rather barebones, but still highly effective for creating amazing presentations.

Easily import slides and presentations from PowerPoint and OpenOffice. You can even launch files from both programs directly within Datasoul. You can also import song lyrics from EasyWorship.

As with most church presentation tools, you can add song lyrics and Bible verses. Add chords and guitar tabs with any song. To make services even more engaging, print out any or all parts of your presentation for members to use during services or to take home.

For online worship, share your presentations online. This works well for live streaming and as an added resource for your church website visitors. You can even export your presentation as a PDF, making it easy to add a downloadable file to your website.

MediaShout is the first fully premium option on this list. However, there is a free 30-day trial to see if it’s right for your church before you pay. It’s a feature-rich presentation tool with all the bells and whistles you could want.

The intuitive and modern interface makes it easy to use. You can even customize it to your needs. Built-in templates get you started quickly.

The presentation editor allows you to customize all aspects of your slides. There’s also a sermon builder to help you create more interactive and engaging sermons.

Easily import PowerPoint slides. You also have access to both public-access and copyrighted Bible translations and versions. Plus, you can import songs using SongSelect.

Customize your stage display and easily display announcements. While there isn’t an Android app yet, you can remotely control your presentations via the iOS app. MediaShout is even planning to add social media integration and cloud storage options soon.

MediaShout starts at $399 or $409 for copyrighted Bible access for the Windows version. The Mac version is $249 and $299. You can also get additional support and exclusive content for $21/month.

Prezi isn’t strictly for churches, but it’s still well worth considering among church presentation tools. What sets it apart is it’s actually a collection of three different tools – Present, Video and Design.

You get access to all three tools starting at $15/month. While a cheaper plan is available, it’s for personal use and doesn’t include nearly as many useful features. A free version is available to create up to five presentations. This is a good way to try it out, though free trials of al premium plans are available too.

Not only can you create custom presentations to show in your church, you can create online presentations to better engage your online worshipers. There are even hundreds of thousands of free images and icons to use.

Create visually engaging stories, which are great for Sunday school and children’s ministry. You can also create voice overs, which work well for online access when you’re not live.

While there isn’t any Bible or song lyric integrations, you can manually add any content you need. This is a major con, but if your church also needs tools for creating videos and image design, the tradeoff might be worth it.

OpenSong is one of the simpler church presentation tools. However, it’s designed specifically to be an easy to use tool for displaying song lyrics and Bible verses. Every slide can have a custom background or background color.

While it doesn’t have the customization of some of the other tools on this list, it is free. It’s a perfect addition to other tools, though, if you want to do more with your songs.

Easily transpose songs, add details about when a capo is used, add full song details (CCLI#, length, tempo, author and more) and customize individual elements, such as underlining certain parts.

You have access to 168 different Bible translations. While it’s a separate download listed on OpenSong, there is a detailed guide on how to do it.

presentation in church

Worship Extreme has a free and premium version. Create fully custom presentations using a variety of built-in Bibles and SongSelect (requires a SongSelect account) integration. Free users have access to limited number of motion graphics, while premium users have access to more.

Create cue lists which you can edit on the fly. Need to add something new during a service? No problem. These lists make it quick and easy to make presentations.

You can also sync you presentations to Worship Extreme’s cloud service. This ensures you always have a backup of your work and access wherever you are.

The premium version starts at $15/month. Get access to all features, including unlimited templates and graphics, for $25/month. Smaller churches will likely do well with the free version, though.

While ZionWorx offers a free trial, there isn’t a free version available. There’s a one-time fee of $249 for your entire team to use the software. All minor updates are free to download, but if a new major version is released, there is an additional upgrade fee.

The intuitive interface lets you jump right in, creating presentations with ease. Add any audio, video or image file into your presentations without worrying about compatibility. All codecs are already built-in.

A layer-based approach makes it quick and easy to customize every part of your presentation. From backgrounds to the text itself, you have full control.

A color-coded layout makes arranging song lyrics easier than ever. You can import songs directly from SongSelect or even text files, though ZionWorx does state this can be glitchy at times. Use BibleGateway to search for and import the Bibles of your choice.

PowerPoint integration is supported. You can also export your entire playlist presentation to use on-the-go. This is ideal if another church wants to use your presentation or you’re presenting as a guest elsewhere.

49 Church Presentation Tips, Tricks, and Hacks

by Brandon Hadley | Oct 25, 2021 | Church Communication | 20 comments

presentation in church

Your church presentation ties the entire service together. If handled correctly, it moves the service from one element to the next on the big screen by offering seamless transitions. This keeps the congregation focused and moving in the same direction.

Using presentations during the sermon provides another avenue for information to make an impact on people’s lives. They’re not just hearing the word, they are able to pay attention and get to read along and visually connect to the most crucial parts of the message. Studies show that people retain more information when they’re able to see it as well as hearing it.

The key to a good presentation

The presentation should serve as an almost invisible tour guide that leads you through the proceedings pointing out areas of interest. You know you have a great presentation when no one is thinking about the presentation. Their attention is being drawn toward God and his Word.

The moment that you’ve drawn attention to the presentation itself, it’s usually because people are being distracted by an overbearing element or some kind of mistake. When you’re putting together a presentation, your ultimate goal is to facilitate worship and weed out distractions.

Creating a church presentation that moves the sermon along without getting in the way requires things like:

  • Preparation
  • Communication

A good presentation doesn’t just happen by accident! You need to constantly learn and discover new ways to create and execute your church presentations with excellence.

We figure you shouldn’t have to learn it all by trial and error. So we asked more than 5,000 pastors, worship leaders, and tech teams to give us their top tips, tricks, and hacks to creating and managing their worship presentation software . Here are some of the best responses we received.

First things first

1. “Pray for guidance, support, and inspiration.” —Mary, Grace and Peace Lutheran Church

It’s important for the tech team to see themselves as a ministry first. This will help them remember that there aren’t any unspiritual tasks. Creating a script for Sunday morning’s presentation is just as spiritually significant as any other task. It should be bathed in prayer and approached as a sacred responsibility.

Do your research

2. “Know the compatibilities for your church’s hardware and programs and work from within that understanding.” — John, First Baptist Church

This is good advice for anyone using church presentation software or hardware. I’m always surprised when churches are using expensive programs or equipment, but are only using the smallest percentage of its feature rich capabilities. So bust out those manuals and play those training videos. You might be surprised at some of the things you didn’t know you were able to do—and the time and money you save.

3. “Do the research needed to ensure that equipment like projectors works in your space. You need to know what the maximum distance from the screen is. You need to know what formats the projector will accept. Invest in the highest quality cables you can. Recognize the difference between infrastructure and replaceables. If you have a cable run that is nearly impossible, you really want to make sure that when you pull those cables, that you won’t be doing it again soon. Five to ten years would be a good time frame. It is also a good plan to stay with tested technology.” —Anthony, Zion Grace UMC

Anthony’s right; there is no substitute for doing your research. It’s important that you’re thinking long term when it comes to making decisions about equipment purchases. If you need to invest in a professional to come in to advise you on what you need now and what’s going to be the most cost efficient, long term investment, it’s worth it!

In the long run, too many churches end up spending extra dollars in order to save a couple dimes.

4. “Do you know of other churches in your area who are using similar equipment and software? Ask if you can send someone to see how they use it.” —Anonymous

Believe it or not, most church tech teams would be happy to show you how they’re managing their equipment. Not only is this an opportunity to discover tricks and systems you’ve never thought of, but it can also go a long way towards building relationships between local churches.

Make sure you’re opening your church up to others as well.

5. “Maintain a spare supply of necessary items, (batteries, remote controls, bulbs for projectors, tie wraps, extension cords—items you don’t think of until you need them).” —Stan, Valley Baptist Church

Put someone in charge of maintaining a list of all the items the tech team needs, and then make sure that you have back-ups for those items. It’s amazing the chaos that can ensue for want of a 9-volt battery!

Building a good team

6. “Don’t assume that because a person is young, they automatically are knowledgeable and interested in being on a tech team.” —Micah, Living Branch Lutheran Church

Micah’s right. Don’t profile!

7. “‘Teching’ during worship services is a volunteer position that can attract people who otherwise don’t volunteer for much, since it can seem less intimidating.” —Micah, Living Branch Lutheran Church

I have led worship for nearly 25 years, and I have found the tech team to be a haven time and time again for super intelligent and introverted people who really want to serve the church but are unsure about where they fit.

So many other ministries require volunteers to be the center of attention if they’re going to exercise thought and responsibility. The media team’s job is different: it’s a huge responsibility, but not a lot of attention. I’ve watched people get brought onto church tech teams and discover their passion for the church explode.

8. “Take the time to practice using all the features of the software that your tech team uses. During a worship service should not be the only time a tech team member uses the church hardware/software.” —Darwin, Jericho Ridge Community Church
9. “Train your volunteers how to fix script errors – in lyrics, bible verses, readings, etc.” —Jane

Training needs to include regular supervised practice taking care of all of the tech team’s tasks. Your volunteers should know how to put together the worship slides, how to edit them, and how to take care of potential problems. They need to see troubleshooting happening in a real-time environment.

The more exposure they get to the software solution—especially in a safe, controlled but live environment—the more confident they’ll be.

10. “Don’t be afraid to ask for help.” —Sharmyn

One of the best ways to get the most out of your church’s presentation tools is to ask the vendor for help directly. You’ll learn how to overcome obstacles, and you’ll get a feel for how the providers are thinking about your church’s presentations.

Shameless plug: MediaShout prides itself on providing the very best support when you need it most. To that end, we’re one of the only church presentation software companies with live support on Sundays when it’s most critical.

Be mindful of your congregation

11. “The biggest challenge is having an ‘inclusive’ worship experience where most people are comfortable, and accepting of the whole worship experience. Media presentations must be tasteful, and assist the flow of the worship experience with smooth transitions. Catering to one segment of worshipers in media style, while excluding others, or catering to a select group will cause more problems. Be tasteful, and include media in a way that enhances the experience, not in a way that draws attention to itself.” —Alan, First Baptist Church, Anderson
12. “Remember, this isn’t entertainment. You want to enhance and not overpower or distract from the service.” —Mary, Grace and Peace Lutheran Church

We’ve come a long way since the days of the static PowerPoint presentation . But we need to always remember that the presentation serves the saints. Make sure your animations and transitions are used tastefully and aren’t distracting from the service.

13. “Just about every hymn we sing is already in our hymnals so initially we saw no need to put the lyrics on the screens. After we tried it a couple times we got a very positive response from some of the elderly members of the congregation. It turns out they won’t admit that they need reading glasses to read the hymnals (or worship programs) but they can still see things in the distance (like our LCD monitors). So the point is you should put everything on the screens that people need to read.” —Kirby, Asbury United Methodist Church
14. “Become familiar to your congregations likes and dislikes in presentations.” —Kenny, First Baptist Church, Gordonsville

When you’re working on your worship media presentations, think about how your choices affect the people you serve. Is your background image too loud? Is your font readable everywhere in the sanctuary? Does your slide have too many words on it? It’s decisions like this that can greatly affect your church’s worship experience.

Prioritize communication between the pastor and tech team

15. “Give the operator plenty of time to build the script. Waiting until the last minute to give them your notes and other items only frustrates the operators. They should want it to look smooth and professional, and this is hard to accomplish in a rush.” —Chris, West Ward Church of God
16. “[Pastors] Make sure to include your media team when you are making changes to the order. Watch the slides and stop and give direction directly to the person running the slides so that they can make notes or take time after practice to make changes with them.” —Patti, The Bridge, Stockton
17. “Our pastor writes up a transcript every week and follows along pretty closely to it. I have him highlight the areas in his teaching that are slides to be fired so my volunteers can easily see what’s coming up next. Then I encourage my pastor that if he feels led to go ‘off script’ then make sure he references the next slide he wants clearly.” —Mikey, The Jar Community Church
18. “Nothing says ‘lack of unity’ like a disjointed worship service, but that is easily avoided by making sure that the focus and tone of your messages are accurately conveyed to everyone involved in planning the service. Drive success by leading your teams in the direction which God leads you.” —Greg, Crossroads Church of Cleburne

Pastors, there was a time when you could do your Sunday sermon prep in a vacuum. But it’s getting harder and harder to get away with putting sermons together at the last minute. The truth is that a lot of what passes for “waiting for inspiration” is simply procrastination.

As you’re putting your sermons together, open another document and take notes relating to the presentation. The more clearly you can communicate your intentions, the better it is for everyone. Get that information to your tech team as early as possible so that they have time to put together the best presentation possible. Ultimately, it’s going to make your sermon even better.

19. “[Pastors] Stuff happens that’s outside the tech team’s control. If you know it’s going on, so does the congregation. Don’t draw a lot of attention to it, and allow the tech team to work it out.” —Anonymous

I have to admit that this one made me laugh. We’ve all seen this one happen a million times. As soon as there’s a problem with the sound or presentation, no matter who’s fault it is, everyone starts looking at the tech booth. Don’t worry—THEY KNOW! If you’re on the stage and run into a technical difficulty, give it some time for the tech team to work it out before you stop everything and draw attention to it.

20. “[When getting all the service information] Ask questions. Who, what, when, where, why – it works in journalism, and it works in planning a service.” —Jane

You can’t always count on everyone to get you all the information you need to put the presentation together. So make sure you’re actively, and not passively, looking at the information you receive. Ask questions about how it’s going to come together and where the transitions are. If you ask good enough questions, you can usually draw out any of the missing information.

21. “[Pastors] Support your media team’s vision. It’s their passion and calling, and their vision needs to be taken seriously.” —David, Bridge of Life Community Church

The tech team is a legitimate ministry that facilitates the entire worship service. It’s critical that they’re empowered to create a vision for spiritual and operational success—and that their vision is supported by leadership.

Working with the worship team

22. “The presentation team needs to have a good relationship with the worship team and leaders.” —Anthony, Zion Grace UMC
23. “Presentation operators should consider themselves part of the Worship Team. Just like the guitar player practices their part before rehearsing with the whole group, the presentation operator should do the same—listen to music, understand the differences in verses and choruses, and know how their ‘instrument’ is part of the overall worship.” —Aaron, Thompson Station Church-Columbia
24. “Have your media/PC team attend Praise & Worship practice! This will help with a smooth presentation.” —Patrick, Salvation Army San Diego Citadel
25. “When it comes to songs, I think it’s a good idea to have your media volunteers listen to the worship songs being played so they know how fast the words are sung, they can hear some of the transitions in the song which can give them a heads up if the worship leader is changing up the order of the song. I also think it’s a great idea if possible to have the media volunteers run through the songs during worship practice.” —Mikey, The Jar Community Church

The team creating and managing the presentations needs to work synergistically with all of the ministry teams in order to create the best service possible. But their success is probably most closely linked to how integrated they are in the worship team.

Their understanding of the worship music, the worship leader’s leadership style, and the team’s practice regiment is going to have a direct impact on how well the presentations go. As much as possible, embed yourself in the worship team.

26. “[Worship teams should] sing the songs the way you gave it to the tech, and the way you practiced it. When the wrong lyrics go up live, the presentation tech is automatically assumed to be wrong.” —David, Bridge of Life Community Church
27. “If you’re going to step out of the order of the songs, give prompts to the congregation, not that they need it, but so that the tech team can quickly find your place. For example, say, ‘Let’s sing the chorus again.’” —Anonymous
28. “[Worship leaders] if you switch a song or lyric or do something that’s not in the tech team’s script or is out of order, they will get mixed up. They can’t tell what song you’re doing until they hear familiar words. Then they’ll figure out which song, but they might not know which lyric it is. This is really scary for them.” —Heather, Cherry Grove Church of the Nazarene
29. “If your worship leader tends to be organic or fluid and jumps around to whatever verse or chorus they want, then the presenter/controller needs to understand the basic verses and basic chorus and so on. Participate in the practices, if any, to see how the performances are trending. Show the cues as they are practicing.” —Ben, Bethel Baptist

When it came to worship and tech teams, two distinct threads emerged:

  • Tech teams should consider themselves to be part of the worship team
  • Worship leaders need to realize that they’re leading the presentation team during a Sunday morning service

I was surprised at how much anxiety seemed to surround the issue of worship teams going off script on Sunday morning. It’s imperative that worship leaders recognize the stress that it places on the people running the presentation when they jump around or make spontaneous decisions during worship.

This doesn’t mean that the worship leader can’t make off-the-cuff decisions when they feel the Spirit is moving, but they need to be keenly aware of the stress it puts on the team when they do. It shouldn’t be a regular occurrence unless an understanding is reached with the presentation team. Jump to the free download.

Creating the presentation

30. “Familiarize yourself with the entire service before you get started. This will give you a guideline for creating your presentation” —Mary, Grace and Peace Lutheran Church

Once you have all the components that will go into a service, you’re in a unique position to see the entire context and flow and make decisions that will aid the transition from one part into the next. It’s like having the top of the puzzle box. Once you see the big picture, it’s a lot easier to assemble the various pieces to facilitate it.

31. “I copy the upcoming events from a digital copy of the Sunday bulletin and paste it into a new text box. I then clean it up by timeframe (days or months). Then I add a control and loop it along with other announcements before the service.” —Patrick, Salvation Army San Diego Citadel
32. “Set up a master template for each different type of service, e.g. Holy Communion, Morning worship, etc. Then when you’re preparing an actual service, duplicate the master and insert specific lyrics, etc.” —Francesca, All Saint’s Church
33. “Use templates whenever possible as this will save you much time and effort.” —Jane

Knowing where you can cut corners without hurting the integrity of the service is a key. If you can create templates for various kinds of services, do it! It will save you a lot of time that you can pour into the more creative elements of script creation.

34. “Focus on complementing the message, not overwhelming it.” —Paula, Genesis Bible Church
35. “Create backgrounds that support the readings and theme.” —Mary, Grace and Peace Lutheran Church

This advice emerged in a number of ways from users, and it can’t be emphasized enough. The presentation serves the elements that make up the service. If you’re unnecessarily drawing attention to the presentation itself, you’re probably undermining its purpose.

36. “When displaying lyrics, look out for hanging words. Avoid single words (orphans) on a line unless it’s sung that way naturally. If possible, put a ‘return’ to break a sentence to two or more lines where there are natural pauses.” —Patrick, Salvation Army San Diego Citadel
37. “On lyric formatting: keep the words readable, it is better to put fewer of them up at a time. It is a balancing act though to get readable, consistent slides for the lyrics.” —Anthony, Zion Grace UMC
38. “Bigger sans serif fonts are best. Don’t crowd too many lines on one screen, especially for liturgy or congregational reading. Break the line where the congregation would naturally breathe. This goes for written out orders of worship, too.” —Brenda, East Heights UMC

There’s a real art to creating presentation slides that are readable and draw people into worship. The most important thing is to weed out anything that’s a distraction. If your congregation can’t read it easily, it’s a distraction that takes away from the worship experience.

Choosing your elements

39. “Choose a video that can compliment your offering time.” —Mary, Grace and Peace Lutheran Church
40. “Fluidity and transitions are important. A jumpy presentation to me is a sloppy presentation.” —Chris, West Ward Church of God

This is where creating presentations requires creativity. It isn’t just a question of choosing a background that you can superimpose lyrics and verses over. It’s about creating an experience that draws the worshiper in.

41. “Be aware that the lighting in the sanctuary is going to have a different effect on the readability of the typeface than it looks in your home.” —Anonymous

I can’t count the times that a script created at home, in the office, or in a coffee shop looked completely different when projected at church. Make sure you give yourself plenty of time to troubleshoot your presentation on the equipment you’ll actually be using.

42. “If you are running multiple videos and or sound clips during one service, go ahead and make volume adjustments in your software before it is time to go live. That way your sound guy doesn’t have to adjust for every clip, and it is easier to go one to the next without sound differences. This is especially useful when playing pre-service music videos that you don’t want to be overpowering while people are coming in, and have another more ‘focused’ video later in the worship time.” —B. Snow, Fellowship Rome
43. “Ideally, tech teams should be able to control sound, or be adjacent to the person who does.” —Francesca, All Saint’s Church

If your presentation involves elements that include sound, don’t forget to check them and set their volume before the service. Francesca’s right, if it’s at all possible, put the presentation operating system close to the sound system.

44. “Most people don’t realize that an image that looks fine on a small screen can look bad on a large screen. They can require cropping and rescaling. People also take videos in the vertical format on their smartphones. I embed these in an HD video and add graphics or text to make the presentation look more professional.” —Kirby, Asbury United Methodist Church

As much as possible, make sure that people understand what kind of assets you need to put together a good presentation. Just know that you’re not always going to get things in the ideal formats, and sometimes pulling it off is going to require some creativity.

Be vigilant against mistakes

45. “Review, practice, and run through your service before Sunday. The ‘perfect’ service is elusive even with your best efforts but impossible without them.” —Mary, Grace and Peace Lutheran Church
46. “Make sure everyone’s on the same page when it comes to the service. Any element of the presentation that is tied to human involvement needs to be run through with the individuals that will be helping to pull it off.” —Anonymous

It might seem impossible to pull off, but if you can do a quick run through with the service components and the presentation, you’re going to be a lot happier with the outcome. No amount of individual preparation matches what you’re able to accomplish with a full-team runthrough.

47. “If you are not a perfect writer, find someone to proofread your presentations. Mistakes can be highly distracting to members of your congregation who recognize them.” —Dwight, Gregory Hills Church of God

When you’re putting together your presentation, there are so many places where mistakes can be introduced. It’s not very likely that you’re going to catch every grammar or spelling mistake, so have someone else sanity-check the presentation before it runs.

Oh, and never trust something you’ve copied and pasted off the internet.

Running the presentation

48. “We must stay alert and display cues at the right time: not too early, not too late. It’s very easy to get lost in the moment or to let our minds wander and not catch the verbal cue to display the next visual cue.” ——Dwight, Gregory Hills Church of God

One of the most important characteristics of someone who is good at running presentations is vigilance. It’s easy to space out during certain elements of the service, but you just can’t afford to. You’ve got to be johnny-on-the-spot if you’re going to catch any problems before they become service-stopping distractions.

49. “Be careful of slide transition times in PowerPoints and cue transition styles. Fancier transitions can cause delays in showing the next script. Know how far in advance to transition the cue. It is easier for the audience to remember the last few words in a cue than to anticipate the next words unseen.” —Ben, Bethel Baptist

Know your scripts! If there are delays in rendering certain presentation slides, make sure it’s not going to interrupt the flow of worship. Ben’s right—it’s incredibly distracting to not have the words up that you’re supposed to be singing because of a lag in the loading time.

Whoever is running your presentation needs to feel confident dealing with surprises, because problems will inevitably crop up. What’s the plan if something goes awry? Mute the projectors? Go to a different feed? There should always be a contingency plan for the unexpected!

On fonts: choose a readable but more modern looking font. Check font size from the farthest point in the room. Limit the number of lines per screen (4-5 works best). Shadowing your font helps it stand out. Choose a background that compliments the song and see how the text lays against the background so words are not getting lost. I find also that too many colors or too much/too fast movement in a motion back can be a distraction. Lastly, relax. Mistakes can happen to the most consciencious people. If it happens to you no worries, it will be better next time.

Eric – Great tips! Thanks for sharing those. I really like the reminder to relax. So often we get caught up in the stress of the moment that we forget one of the simplest tricks.

Hi…in meadishout you could open 2 scrip pqges to add lyrics…shout 6…not possible Is it possible to be qble to highlight the songs in the lyric list so it can be remebers that you used it already or a.tick box…

With the Insert Lyric box open, you can hold CTRL+click to multi-select lyrics and add them to your script. We have some additional ideas we are working on around this to make it easier, but check out our Knowledge Base (support.mediashout.com) and click Community in the top right. There you can find conversation with other MediaShout users or submit a feature request and vote on other requests. It’s a great way to get involved and provide us feedback so that we can continue to improve.

Make line breaks that go with the phrasing. Easier to speak and sing this way. Found that outlining and shadowing text together can make test harder to read. Shadowing alone was better for us.

Great insight! Musicality is important as it does help the reader know where the song is going. Making breaks at phrasing points is important to emphasize that. Also, great job experimenting with Outline and Shadow and finding what works great for your situation. That’s perfect!

In the script pane on the left, the view can be set to compact. I like to see the whole service at once, or most of it, so that is a good feature for me, but it’s too compact. In MS5 it showed the title of the cue plus the first line. I don’t need to see the whole cue, or the image with the cue, but the title only isn’t quite enough. Any chances that might be an option?

The full view in the script pane makes it look like PowerPoint, which I’m sure is cool for people who are used to it. Better for them to transition to MS. (Of course, in my opinion, MS is better once you learn it.) I just feel like I’m flailing around in deep water, can’t see the bottom.

For things like this, we recommend that you put the request in our Feature Request Page so that other users can see that and vote on that:

https://support.mediashout.com/hc/en-us/community/topics/200887388-Community-Forums-Feature-Requests

Another idea, and this just came off the top of my head so maybe it’s NOT a good idea. I haven’t thought it thru yet. In the editing area (I can’t remember what it’s called) where you can see and edit the current cue, what about an option where you can see the next cue alongside of it, on the right? That way you could edit the next cue if necessary while the current cue is showing too. This probably wouldn’t work on a smaller monitor.

Nancy Woomer

I thought the e-book was very good. I sent it to my pastor and it opened up conversations about what would make setting up the service less stressful. Thank you for always being there for us and the great graphics in your monthly collections. It is money well invested.

Our pleasure! Our hope is that this gets passed around to churches and pastors and opens the conversation to help everyone improve what they do for the glory of God. Thanks and be blessed!

Can your media shout 6 read Arabic and contain Arabic bible

MediaShout relies on the fonts installed on your computer. There may be some limitations on this depending on the type of font, but for the most part, it can read and display Arabic text. You can download the 30-day trial to try it out. As for Arabic Bibles, we currently don’t have any in our database. However, if you will email support {at} mediashout {dot} com with the name of the Bible and Publisher information, we will look to see what our licensing options are. We can’t promise that we can get it in, but we will explore the option. Thank you!

Barry Cornwall

I appreciate your attention and for the preview material you forwarded. We are a very small church with very limited financial resources.

Thanks again

Our pleasure! Be blessed!

2 more tips…though they likely won’t be popular.

1) use punctuation for lyric slides. It aids tremendously in understanding and understanding should be a high priority when singing.

2) Left justify lyrics. It eases the eyes in reading as the eyes always know where to go to for the next line. I’m sure that the benefit will mostly be subconscious. I understand that many like the appearance of centered text, but aiding worship shouls be a higher priority.

Thanks for the thoughts. There are some various school of thought on how lyrics are to be displayed. Some say that you do all lower-case (except proper names or attributes of God) and no punctuation. Others suggest exactly as you have it. The key is to use what is appropriate for your church. For some people, the punctuation (especially at the end of a line) is too much. Clarity is the key (as you mention) and if you lay out your text according to musical phrasing, then punctuation is not needed (as there is naturally a pause at the end of the line). For our church, what we have found that works best for us is the following (again, this is our church and is not for every church):

1) Lyrics designed with musical phrasing in mind. 2) No more than 4 lines per screen. 3) Capitalize the first letter in each line (along with proper names and attributes of God). 4) No punctuation, except for commas within a line (not at the end) and Exclamation or Question Marks at the end when necessary (for clarity). 5) Text broken up where the length of each line is similar (ex. Amazing Grace / How sweet the sound vs. Amazing Grace, how sweet / the sound). 6) No orphans (single word on a line by itself) or widows (single word or short phrase on a page by itself).

What makes this great is it isn’t a one-size-fits-all scenario. Instead, even within the way we do our lyrics, there is diversity within the Body of Christ. Thanks for sharing.

I really enjoy this program, this is the first time for learning on how to work it.

Karen – we are here to help in any way we can. Please let us know how we can best serve you. Thanks and be blessed!

Sandra Patterson

You make a great point about how the better a pastor can communicate their intentions, the better it is for everyone that is listening. My sister has never been to church service, and has been looking around for a good service to go to. Maybe if she looks for a pastor that communicates like this, then she will be able to have a better guide for what to look for.

The Best Presentation Software Options for Churches

top-church-presentation-software

It can be tough to decide which presentation software is right for your church, so I’ve put together  a list of all the best options on the market today.

You’ll see what each option costs, what it does best, and what platforms it’s designed to run on. There are even two completely free church presentation software options on the list.

This guide should help you pick the presentation software that’s best-suited to meet your church’s needs.

MediaShout 6

Platforms : Mac and PC Pricing model : purchase outright (as opposed to a subscription) Cost : $399

What sets MediaShout 6 apart?

There’s a reason MediaShout 6 is at the top of my list; not only is it affordable, but there are a lot of positive factors that make it a good choice.

Customer support . One of things that sets MediaShout apart most is its 7-day-a-week customer service. No other church presentation software offers such a high degree of support for its users.

Free content included . A MediaShout license comes with more than 2,500 songs with ready-to-go lyrics, and 67 free Bibles. That’s a lot more starter content than other available options.

Multi-screen functionality . While most other options either don’t support multi-screen functionality or require you to spend extra to get it, MediaShout 6 comes with it built in.

Hardware options . The MediaShout team has collaborated with Dell to build a variety of hardware bundles designed with churches in mind.

Built with PowerPoint in mind . Since a lot of churches “graduate” to church presentation software from PowerPoint, it’s great to have an interface that helps PowerPoint users along. MediaShout does just that: the interface is built to be especially easy to understand if you’re used to PowerPoint.

Take a look at MediaShout 6

ProPresenter 6

Platforms : Mac and PC Pricing model : purchase outright, add modules for additional cost Cost : $399+

What sets ProPresenter 6 apart?

ProPresenter is one of the most widely-used softwares for church presentations. In addition to being popular, there are a few things that make it unique:

Modules . You can purchase additional hardware modules that give the software additional functionality. For example, you can buy a module that lets you present on multiple screens.

Bibles . It doesn’t include quite as many as MediaShout 6, but with 46 free Bibles, you’re still getting a great number of options.

Mobile apps . ProPresenter 6 has several mobile apps different team members can download. These come in handy for controlling the presentation on Sunday morning.

Learn more about ProPresenter 6

Platforms : Mac and PC Pricing model : subscription Cost : $19.95 monthly at the low end, $79.89 monthly at the high end

What sets Proclaim apart?

One of the most unique factors of Proclaim is that it’s made by Faithlife, the creators of Logos Bible Software. The two products are integrated, so that’s a nice benefit for Logos users. In addition to that …

Cloud-enabled . Proclaim allows teams to collaborate on presentations with their cloud feature.

Mobile apps . Like ProPresenter, Proclaim also features mobile apps that can be used to control presentations like a remote control. It also allows presenters to send updates to congregation members who use other Logos apps on their phones.

Pastoral focus.  Proclaim was built to give pastors more control over building their presentations from their sermons.

Go see Proclaim

EasyWorship 6

Platforms : PC only Pricing model : purchase outright Cost : $499

What sets EasyWorship 6 apart?

Though EasyWorship is only available for Windows, that’s actually part of what makes it special. It’s specifically made for people who have been using PowerPoint.

So if you’re a PowerPoint user, consider this:

Similar layout . If you know how to use PowerPoint, you’ve got a leg up already in figuring out EasyWorship 6.

Works with PowerPoint files . You can import your previously-created PowerPoint presentations into EasyWorship instead of starting from scratch.

In addition to the PowerPoint integration, EasyWorship also integrates with QuickTime so you can play video content in your presentations.

Check out EasyWorship

MediaShout Bridge

Platforms : PC (you also need PowerPoint 2007, 2010, or 2013) Pricing model : purchase outright Cost : $99

What sets MediaShout Bridge apart?

MediaShout Bridge is a simpler presentation software option for churches who are using PowerPoint and might not be ready to transition to a new software solution.

Upgrades PowerPoint . This plugin works within an existing installation of PowerPoint, and turns it into a tool specifically for churches.

Includes a Lyric library . Bridge gives PowerPoint users a huge arsenal of public domain songs and hymns to use in their presentations.

Includes Bibles . A lot of Bibles—67 versions, to be precise.

Take a look at MediaShout Bridge

ShareFaith Presenter

Platforms : Only for Windows 10 (must also have Office 365) Pricing model : part of a subscription to ShareFaith Complete Cost : $71/month (includes more than presentation software)

What sets ShareFaith Presenter apart?

In some ways, ShareFaith Presenter is similar to MediaShout Bridge. It’s a plugin that works with PowerPoint to connect it with other ShareFaith tools.

It’s quite limited on operating system, so make sure you have Windows 10 and Office 365 before pursuing this option.

If your church uses ShareFaith, and you use the newest version PowerPoint, this is a good solution.

Take a look at ShareFaith Presenter

Free church presentation software

Among the top options for church presentation software are two that are entirely free: OpenLP and OpenSong. Learn more about the differences between the two free options below.

Platforms : Linux, PC, and Mac Pricing model : freeware Cost : none

What sets OpenLP apart?

Aside from the obvious (that it’s totally free), OpenLP does some cool stuff:

Gives you basic presentation functionality . You can create slides with text formatting, images, and various effects.

Remote control . OpenLP even has a remote control feature, so you can navigate through the presentation from any networked device.

Video . You can display and play video files in your presentations—which is pretty cool for an open source program!

Friendly with PowerPoint . You can import PowerPoint presentations into OpenLP.

If you’re not ready to spend money on a presentation tool designed for churches, you can at least start playing around with OpenLP.

Learn about OpenLP

What sets OpenSong apart

OpenSong and OpenLP share some commonalities, but OpenSong seems to have been created more with musicians in mind rather than pastors and tech teams. It allows for basic presentation functionality, plus a few other cool things:

Chord chart manipulation . OpenSong lets you play around with chord charts. For example, you can automatically transpose chords to any key—a helpful tool for music teams.

Timed slide loops . Teams can create sets of slides that loop at a predetermined pace.

Since it’s free, there’s no harm in downloading a version to see if it can work for you.

greatly saying well done.

Please let me know what you think of VideoPsalm, the free worship software that comes with thousands of songs and hundreds of Bible translations: http://www.videopsalm.org/

From inside VideoPsalm, add standard songbooks and Bibles (English, Spanish, Hindi, etc. from 400+ translations): http://myvideopsalm.weebly.com/how-to-get-songbooks.html

Or add your own: http://myvideopsalm.weebly.com/how-to-addedit-songs-and-announcements.html

Any feedback is welcome!

Hi Marc and Laura – I am testing out VideoPsalm at the moment. Generally I find it very good and very customizeable, and it is cloud based which is an important aspect. The one thing I have a problem with is keeping the background picture the same for all songs.

I prefer a Linux environment, but my favorite free Windows-based lyric presenter is EasySlides.

https://www.easyslides.com/ EasySlides offers dual-lingual lyrics, multimedia support, 3 monitor output, alerts, Bible verses, and more. Development is active with the latest (beta) release in 08/2017.

Another good option for church presentation software is Song of Songs

Song Of Songs is easy to use, which can be used for churches of all sizes to control their service media presentations.

Controlled via a single screen for fast on the fly changes during the service, Song Of Songs makes it simple to make on the fly changes for when the worship leader decides to change to a different song.

http://www.songofsongs.co.uk

what about BibleShow: https://bibleshow.net/index.php?lng=en

Another option worth mentioning is Big Screen. It is cloud based and works in your browser. You can read more about it here: https://bigscreen.show

Disclaimer: I am a developer for Big Screen.

This is quite helpful. My church may be ready to switch from proclaim and this gave me some ideas on where to look.

Thank you Laura.

MediaShout is a feature-rich church presentation software solution and comes with all the bells and whistles you’d expect from a market leader. It is available for both Mac OS and Windows .

The user interface has many customization options, such as layout setup and light/dark theme, and supports multiple interface languages (French and Spanish, in addition to English).

Mediashout screenshot

If you have volunteers running the presentation, you can enable “Volunteer mode.” This will start up a simpler interface mode, hiding the settings and content editing controls.

Mediashout offers an iOS app (why no Android app?) to control your church presentation remotely, and supports USB wireless remotes.

It has built-in integration support for Dropbox (file sharing), Planning Center (worship planning tool), and SongSelect (song database). If you need support , their documentation is extensive, and they have a dedicated knowledge base app for iOS and Android to help with common technical issues.

MediaShout Capabilities for Church Presentations

  • Imports PowerPoint as static slides
  • Public and copyrighted Bible verses
  • SongSelect integration
  • Announcements

Additionally, you can get SlideDog’s church presentation software with a lifetime license for $299 (one-time payment).

Faithlife Proclaim

Faithlife’s Proclaim is a major player in the church presentation software space. Their license model is subscription-based.

Unlike others, they will allow you to create an unlimited number of team accounts and install the software on as many Mac or Windows PCs as you want, so it’s a good option if you handle AV for multiple churches , but can get clunky if you only need it for your own presentations. This also means your team can edit and run several concurrent presentations using the same license.

Proclaim Screenshot

Proclaim integrates with the usual lyric and verse providers (SongSelect, Planning Center, Logis Bible Software, and more), and any changes made to your service are saved to your teams’ cloud accounts.

If you’d like access to their (and their partners’) media library with over motions, stills, and mini-movies, you’ll need to opt for a higher-priced plan.

Proclaim has implemented polls & surveys in its church presentation software, making interacting and engaging with your congregation easier.

For remote control, you can use the Proclaim Remote App which works for iOS and Android.

Ultimately, Proclaim is probably the most complete church presentation tool out there. It has features and functionality that move beyond the garden-variety Sunday worship service.

Faithlife Proclaim Capabilities

  • Import PowerPoint as static slides
  • Public and copyrighted Bibles
  • Announcements and bulletins
  • Songs and music integration
  • Video backgrounds
  • Audience interaction features (live surveys/polls)
  • Digital signage support
  • Sermon recording & publishing
  • Confidence monitor/presenter view
  • Android and iOS remote control

Faithlife Proclaim Features

Faithlife proclaim pricing.

Proclaim for standard church presentations starts from $224.99/year . However, if you’d also like access to their media library , the plans start from $337.99/yr.

ProPresenter

ProPresenter is a cross-platform (Mac and Windows) worship and presentation software for live events, so it works perfectly for church presentations.

presentation in church

It has advanced video editing features allowing you to crop and zoom videos dynamically from within the software. As for slides, ProPresenter allows you to control backgrounds, live video layers, slides, props, and masks independently.

In addition to these multimedia features, the software can be extended with Audio Visual modules (hardware and software products) to go further.

You’ll also get a scripture engine with Bible translations in various languages. You can import lyrics from SongSelect, and a built-in media store lets you add media from their partner media library (Worship House Media).

They have a flexible licensing solution, letting you choose between two subscription types. EasyWorship supports Alpha Channel, NewTek Tricaster AirSend, Blackmagic, and NewTek NDI for broadcasting .

Big Screen is, unlike others, a web-based church presentation solution. That means you don’t have to install any software, and you can run it on both Mac OS and Windows using a modern browser like Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox.

Big Screen Screenshot

The downside to this is that an internet connection is required .

Big Screen is split into two sections; the admin section and the control surface. The control surface is the interface to present your media. You can add songs, videos, images, timers, and Bible scriptures to playlists and save them in your online library.

When presenting, multiple new browser windows will be created for each of the screens connected to your computer. You will then have to drag the window to the correct screen. This can make it a bit clunky , but if Big Screen otherwise meets your requirements, it might be worth a compromise.

BigScreen Capabilities

  • Functions as a web browser app
  • Looping background videos
  • Bible and song/lyrics integration
  • YouTube integration

BigScreen Features

Both the Free and Pro versions support PowerPoint slides and can play videos, songs, images, and Bible scriptures. FreeWorship is compatible with Windows Vista and above.

The user interface is similar to other worship software, consisting of a playlist of media items, controls for launching and adding new items, and “Preview/Up Next” and “Live” viewer panels.

Graveyard for Discontinued Church Presentation Software

This section is dedicated to the software you may have heard about a while back, but that has unfortunately been discontinued or hasn’t been updated in many, many years..

🥀 Does Praisenter Still Work?

Praisenter was an application that displayed Bible verses, songs, and notifications (among other things) to a secondary display, typically a projector, monitor, or television, for use in a church service or event. Unfortunately, the last update was in 2014.

  • Price: Free and Open Source
  • Supported OS: Windows, Mac, Linux

🥀 Does Screen Monkey Still Work?

Screen Monkey is professional media playback and control software for live events, theatre, churches, and broadcasting. If you’re a church leader who wants to display the song lyrics , you might want to check out their Worship Monkey package.

One big caveat is that, at the time of us refreshing this guide (2023), it seems as though the software is no longer actively supported. The copyright has been refreshed in 2020, and the security certificate of the website has expired, so we recommend getting in touch with the provider to ensure it’s still operational.

  • Price: Free and premium at a one-time fee of $270.
  • Supported OS: Windows

🥀 Does Sharefaith Presenter’s Church Presentation Plugin Still Work?

Unlike most other church presentation software products, Sharefaith Presenter isn’t a stand-alone application, it’s a PowerPoint Plugin . Now, we’ve placed it in the graveyard as it’s no longer actively supported, so you may be better off with a regularly updated church presentation tool

  • Price: Starts from $19/month
  • Supported program: Windows PowerPoint

🥀 Does PowerWorship Still Work?

PowerWorship enabled you to create and maintain a library of worship songs and could be used to build presentation slides for Microsoft PowerPoint and Apache OpenOffice. It came in Free, Standard, and Premium versions. Unfortunately, the last release was in 2016.

  • Price: From USD $29

🥀 Is LiveWorship Still Operational?

LiveWorship by GeekJam, LLC was a Mac/Windows cross-platform worship solution. It featured a drag-and-drop interface and displayed Bible scriptures, songs, audio, video, and image backgrounds. Unfortunately, their main website is no longer fully operational and the last release was in 2012.

  • Price: Starts from $199
  • Supported OS: Windows, Mac

🥀 Does ShowShare Work?

ShowShare was a web-based presentation software for Christian worship. It didn’t require any installation and could work on any web-enabled device or platform. Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like it’s maintained.

  • Price: Unknown
  • Supported OS: Web based

🥀 Is Ephphatha Still Operational?

Ephphatha was a church presentation software tool made in India. A few years ago, their web page wasn’t very clear on what features were included or how much the software cost, and these days it’s not even operational.

  • Supported OS: Unknown

🥀 Does WorshipCenter Pro Still Work?

WorshipCenter Pro featured a built-in scripture database and support for PowerPoint, video files, images, Flash presentations, and web pages. It included over 4,000 hymns and an interface to CCLI SongSelect to import contemporary praise songs. Their website is no longer operational, and the last version came out in 2010.

  • Price: One-time $44 fee

🥀 Does Sunday Worship Still Work?

Sunday Worship is church song presentation software for Windows that allows you to project songs, scriptures, photos, videos, and notices for all the congregation to see. Unfortunately, their software isn’t updated frequently (the last update was in 2016), so it might not be as easy to scale the wow effect once your congregation starts loving your presentations.

  • Price: One.time $44 fee.

Verdict: Which Church Presentation Software Should You Choose?

The choice depends on your requirement.

If you’re more traditional and only work with presentation software a few times every year, you’re better off with the free tools that handle the basics.

However, if editing videos or creating high-quality presentations is something you do frequently to keep your flock engaged, you’ll love the paid tools’ support.

SlideDog is a great option when you need a presentation launch pad that focuses on interacting with your audience and keeps their attention till the very end! You create the playlist with different media files (including PowerPoint presentations, videos, and more).

Focus on your message; SlideDog will handle the technical details to run a presentation that’ll be the talk of the town!

Kudos to openlp.

OpenLP has made a tremendous positive impact on our services. The singing has increased tenfold as even those with poor eyesight can clearly see the onscreen lyrics. H. Mullan

Fantastic Software!

I have been using OpenLP for a couple of years and I found it very easy to navigate and despite never having used this type of software before was able to get a service up and running in a couple of minutes once I had installed the program. Peter G.

A Huge Blessing!

Just wanted to drop you a line to say thank you for a great product. I'm traveling around to small churches helping them upgrade their media environments. With little or no budgets, OpenLP has been a great help. I wish I could capture the look on a pastor's face when I tell him it's a free software. Brian

Great Product!

Sunday morning I set the up projector, gave a 10 minute lesson to the young lady who does our overheads. Everything went smoothly. She was so excited, the congregation thought it was great, our priest was ecstatic. John H. St Patrick's Church, Canada

Comparison Criteria

What do I look for when I select the best worship presentation systems? Here’s a summary of my evaluation criteria:

  • User Interface (UI): Worship leaders need to care for many things during services, so I look for software with easy-to-find features.
  • Usability: All church presentation software should be easy to use and master so church employees and volunteers can learn it quickly.
  • Integrations: Managing worship services involve using several tools, so I look for software that will work with the other tools I use.
  • Value for $: Churches have a limited source of funds, so I look for inexpensive software packed with many features.

Worship Presentation Software Key Features

  • Presentation editor : Allows users to create, edit, and format presentations without using a different tool.
  • Remote control app : Allows worship leaders to control the projector using their mobile phones remotely.
  • Media library : A collection of media files to make presentations more interesting.
  • Bible integration : Allows worship leaders to display Bible verses in different languages.
  • Multi-screen : Enables users to display multiple presentations on different screens.

What do you think about this list?

Presentations make worship services more interesting and interactive. They can also help worship leaders make sermons easier to understand.

With the help of worship presentation software, worship leaders can easily create fantastic presentations to spend more time attending to other responsibilities. If you are still counting on old-school technology to create and project presentations, now is the time to use the worship presentation software listed above.

The Feast of the Presentation

The Feast of the Presentation

According to the Church’s liturgical calendar, the feast held on Feb. 2 each year is in honor of the Presentation of the Lord. Some Catholics recall this day as the feast of the Purification of the Blessed Virgin Mary because such was the feast day named until the 1969 changes in the Church’s calendar.

In fact, according to Luke’s Gospel, the presentation of Jesus and the purification of the Blessed Mother took place in the Temple on the same day, and both are remembered during Mass on Feb. 2. Also, in several countries, Candlemas is simultaneously celebrated on this day and involves a candlelight procession that was popularized in the Middle Ages. Until the Second Vatican Council the feasts on Feb. 2 ended the Christmas season. Today, the season ends in January on the feast of the Baptism of our Lord.

As early as the fourth century Christians commemorated the presentation of Jesus in the Temple, but, at the time, there was no feast name attached. In seventh-century Rome, the Church named the celebration the feast of the Purification of the Blessed Mother Mary, and it remained that way for nearly 1,300 years. In the reforms after Vatican II, the feast was given a stronger focus on Jesus (by stressing the Presentation of Jesus), but clearly the events of purification and presentation that took place when Jesus was 40 days old (see Lk 2:22-39) are tied together and thus commemorated together.

Under Mosaic law found in the Old Testament Book of Leviticus, a Jewish woman who gave birth to a child was considered unclean (see 12:1-8). The mother of a newborn could not routinely go out into public and had to avoid all things sacred, including the Temple. If her child was a male, this exclusion lasted for 40 days. If the child was female, the period lasted 80 days. This was a ceremonial seclusion and not the result of sin or some kind of wrongdoing on the part of the mother.

At the end of the 40 or 80 days the woman presented herself at the Temple to be purified. If the baby was her firstborn male child, the infant was brought along to the Temple to be dedicated to the Lord. The law in Exodus specifies that the first male child belongs to God (see 13:2-16). This law is a tribute to God for His sparing the firstborn Israelite males during the time of the Exodus from Egypt. The firstborn Egyptian male children, of course, were not spared.

The mother’s purification ritual obliged her to bring, or purchase at the Temple, a lamb and a turtledove as sacrificial offerings. The lamb was offered in thanksgiving to God for the successful birth of the child; the turtledove was a sin offering. Families that could not afford a lamb could bring two pigeons or two turtledoves. After these animals were sacrificed, the Temple priest prayed over the woman and she could once again resume her normal role or status.

Mary, the ever spotless Mother of God, certainly did not have to comply with this ritual, but did so to honor God and observe all the rules handed down by Moses. She was the holiest of all women, but she still submitted to the humbling requirements of the law. She remained at home for 40 days, denied herself all association with sacred things and on the day required walked the five miles from Bethlehem to the Temple in Jerusalem. Arriving at the Temple, Mary likely stood in line and waited her turn to see the priest.

Nunc Dimittis

In Luke’s Gospel, Jesus, Mary and Joseph go to the Temple offering two turtledoves for Mary’s purification. Along with Mary’s willing submission, Jesus is presented into the hands of the priest and thus to God. In accordance with the Old Testament, the child was blessed and then bought or ransomed back by the family who would pay five shekels into the Temple treasury. The Savior of the world is ransomed in the manner of every other Hebrew boy. “When the days were completed for their purification according to the law of Moses, they took him up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord, just as it is written in the law of the Lord, ‘Every male that opens the womb shall be consecrated to the Lord’”(Lk 2:22-24; see Nm 18:15-16).

The Gospel of Luke explains that the old prophet Simeon and the prophetess Anna were at the Temple that day (see 2:22-38). They, like many others, had spent their lifetime waiting, longing for a Messiah, and the Holy Spirit had revealed to Simeon that he would not die until he had seen the Savior. Among all the children and mothers coming into the Temple, Simeon recognized Jesus as the Christ Child; he held Jesus and exclaimed this hymn of thanksgiving, “Now, Master, you may let your servant go in peace, according to your word, for my eyes have seen your salvation, which you prepared in sight of all the peoples, a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and glory for your people Israel” (2:29-32). The hymn has traditionally been termed the Nunc Dimittis , from the Latin, “ Nunc dimittis servum tuum, Domine, secundum verbum tuum in pace .”

Like Mary, Jesus the Divine Son of God did not have to undergo these rituals, but His parents willingly complied in order to pay tribute to Jewish laws, to avoid any possible scandal and in so doing demonstrated profound humility. They acquiesced to the law like all poor Jewish families.

The Holy Family must have experienced great joy, even wonder at all that had happened to them. Consider the events of the previous weeks. First, the shepherds miraculously arrived to adore and praise Jesus on the night He was born. And now, Simeon, another stranger, singles out Jesus as the Savior, not only of Israel but of the world. Someday all the other children being presented will know Jesus as their Savior. But here in the Temple there is also pain. The old prophet, moved by the Holy Spirit, tells Mary that she will experience unspeakable grief because of the outrageous way the world would judge and treat her Son. But Mary remained always committed to God’s will and to her Son.

Feb. 2 is on the liturgical calendar as the feast of the Presentation of the Lord, but in addition to the presentation, the Mass recalls Mary’s humble submission to the purification ritual.

7 Reasons Why Women Play a Vital Role in the Church Community

During the creation process (Genesis 1-2). But one thing wasn’t good. God designed Eden as a paradise, yet something was missing. Adam needed Eve. Without her inclusion, it wasn’t good.

Let’s not make the same mistake in the church today: male and female both express God’s image, each in their unique way. As male and female characters in the Bible teach us more about God, we need the same collaboration in the church to understand God’s heart and purposes better.

Different denominations have various thoughts on women’s participation in ministry. We may disagree on some of the finer details, but we must remember that Acts shares how men and women can teach together, how they can work together to impact ministries (Acts 18:26). Whatever our perspective, we should make sure we don’t dismiss the gifts that women can bring to our congregations.

Here are seven reasons women play a vital role in the church community.

1. They offer fresh perspectives on teaching

Since women and men have distinct biblical roles and strengths, female insights and experiences bring richness and depth to biblical interpretation and application that men may miss.

The most obvious example is that women bear children, a beautiful experience that men don’t have. This unique journey provides profound insights into creation, nurturing, and sacrificial love. Their firsthand understanding of family dynamics and child-rearing supports both parents and the broader church community; their experiences can foster a more inclusive, comprehensive approach to faith and how we understand God’s love for us. By addressing issues such as motherhood, caregiving, and female empowerment, women teachers can connect with and inspire other women in the congregation, fostering a supportive and inclusive community.

All these perspectives can lead to great new insights on well-known passages. They may highlight themes of compassion, nurturing, and resilience. They may provide a different view of women pivotal in the Bible’s redemptive story—women like Sarah, Hanna, Esther, Ruth , and Mary, the mother of Jesus.

Women’s voices ensure that the teachings are well-rounded and inclusive, addressing the entire congregation’s needs and experience. This diversity in teaching strengthens the church, promoting unity and spiritual growth.

2. They are necessary for ministry leadership

Women play a vital role in the church community through leadership. Their leadership may take many forms but is essential to fostering a diverse, dynamic spiritual environment.

Women excel in ministry leadership through their natural capacity for empathy and relational skills. These traits allow them to connect deeply with congregants, understand their needs, and provide compassionate support. Female leaders often excel in creating inclusive and nurturing environments where everyone feels valued and heard. This approach helps build strong, supportive communities within the church.

Female leaders often bring innovative ideas and fresh perspectives to church ministries. Whether it’s youth ministry, women’s groups, or outreach programs, women leaders play a crucial role in expanding and enhancing the church’s impact.

The Bible highlights women’s significance in leadership roles. In Romans 16:1-2 , Paul commends Phoebe, a deacon of the church in Cenchreae: “I commend to you our sister Phoebe, a deacon of the church in Cenchreae. I ask you to receive her in the Lord in a way worthy of his people and to give her any help she may need from you, for she has been the benefactor of many people, including me.” This passage underscores how the early church prioritized and respected female leaders.

3. They can mentor other women

All church members need mentoring to navigate life’s challenges and deepen their faith . Mentoring provides wisdom, guidance, and support for personal and communal spiritual growth.

The Bible underscores the importance of mentoring relationships in Titus 2:3-5 , which states, “Likewise, teach the older women to be reverent in the way they live, not to be slanderers or addicted to much wine, but to teach what is good. Then they can urge the younger women to love their husbands and children, to be self-controlled and pure, to be busy at home, to be kind, and to be subject to their husbands so that no one will malign the word of God.”

Women mentoring other women provide guidance, support, and encouragement for those needs. Women can draw from their experiences to provide practical guidance on balancing family, work, and faith. Since they have a relational connection with the women they mentor, they can share wisdom and experiences in a relatable, impactful way. Their support helps mentees confidently grow in spiritual maturity, empowering them to take active roles within the church and their communities. When women support each other, it strengthens the church’s bonds, creating a network of encouragement and accountability. This unity is essential for thriving church communities where everyone feels valued and supported.

Mentorship nurtures the next generation of women in the church, ensuring strengthened community bonds and continued spiritual legacies.

4. They advocate through charity and social justice

The Bible underscores the importance of justice and advocacy in Micah 6:8 , which states, “He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.” This verse highlights the call for believers to pursue justice and mercy, a mission women in the church passionately undertake.

Women often lead initiatives tackling issues like poverty, domestic violence, human trafficking, and racial injustice. Their unique perspectives and experiences enable them to effectively identify and address the needs of marginalized and vulnerable groups. By championing these causes, women in the church embody the biblical mandate to seek justice and care for the oppressed.

For example, the civil rights movement relied heavily on church communities for support. Women played an instrumental role in the Montgomery Bus Boycott (1955-1956). Rosa Parks’ courageous defiance sparked the boycott, and women like her continued to inspire and lead. Leaders like Jo Ann Robinson initiated the call for the boycott and spread the word through flyers. Additionally, women participated heavily in carpool systems and fundraising efforts to support the boycotters. Women from churches organized, mobilized, and sustained a key movement to fight injustice.

Women’s leadership in these areas inspires others to join in the fight for a more equitable world, strengthening the church’s impact and witness.

5. They transform mission work and outreach

The Bible highlights the importance of mission work in Matthew 28:19-20 , where Jesus commands, “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and the Holy Spirit , and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.” The Great Commission underscores the call for all believers, including women, to engage in mission work and outreach.

Women often lead and organize mission trips, community service projects, and outreach programs. These initiatives address various needs like healthcare, education, and poverty alleviation. Their ability to connect with people personally helps build trust and meaningful relationships—both essential for effective ministry. These connections allow them to share Christ’s love and provide practical assistance, embodying the gospel message. Not only that but their unique perspectives and skills also bring creativity and innovation to mission projects. They find new ways to address challenges and meet needs.

In addition, women who engage in mission work and outreach inspire by example. They encourage others to engage in service, which expands missionaries’ or churches’ impact. Their compassionate leadership and dedication help build stronger, more vibrant communities of faith , reflecting Christ’s love and teachings in every act of service.

6. They provide artistic and creative contributions

The Bible acknowledges the importance of artistic contributions in Exodus 35:35 : “He has filled them with the skill to do all kinds of work as engravers, designers, embroiderers in blue, purple and scarlet yarn and fine linen, and weavers—all of them skilled workers and designers.” This verse highlights that God values and empowers artistic talents for his glory.

Women’s talents—in music, visual arts, drama, and other creative expressions—can enhance the worship experience and bring the biblical message to life in unique and powerful ways.

Women often serve as worship leaders or choir directors, using their musical gifts to lead the congregation in praise and worship. Their ability to choose songs and create worship sets that resonate with the congregation can profoundly impact the service’s atmosphere. Women’s voices and musical talents add richness and diversity to the worship experience.

Visual arts also play a significant role in the church. Women can contribute through painting, sculpture, and other forms. Their visual works can visually depict important spiritual ideas—for example, by illustrating biblical stories or sermon themes.

Women’s creativity can also shine in drama and other storytelling forms. Through skits, plays, and other dramatic presentations, women can convey powerful messages and bring biblical narratives to life.

Art evokes emotion, provokes thought, and creates a visually engaging environment, drawing people to contemplate their faith deeply. When churches encourage women to contribute, they unlock new learning and expressions they didn’t expect.

7. They promote prayer and intercession

The Bible highlights the importance of prayer and intercession in James 5:16 : “Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.” Women’s devotion to prayer brings a powerful dynamic to the church’s spiritual life.

In many churches, women are the backbone of prayer ministries. They organize and participate in prayer meetings or prayer chains, dedicating significant time to interceding for others. By consistently praying for others, women help create a supportive and nurturing environment where members feel cared for and spiritually uplifted.

Their dedication not only comforts and encourages the people they pray for, but their prayers also strengthen the overall church’s spiritual health. Through their intercession, women play a crucial role in addressing the church’s spiritual battles and challenges. Their prayers range from individual concerns to global issues—and should—because that shows a comprehensive, compassionate approach. Their deep intercessory prayers help to fortify the church’s spiritual foundation. Their requests bring healing, guidance, and strength, fostering a community rooted in faith and compassion.

How to Make a “Good” Presentation “Great”

  • Guy Kawasaki

presentation in church

Remember: Less is more.

A strong presentation is so much more than information pasted onto a series of slides with fancy backgrounds. Whether you’re pitching an idea, reporting market research, or sharing something else, a great presentation can give you a competitive advantage, and be a powerful tool when aiming to persuade, educate, or inspire others. Here are some unique elements that make a presentation stand out.

  • Fonts: Sans Serif fonts such as Helvetica or Arial are preferred for their clean lines, which make them easy to digest at various sizes and distances. Limit the number of font styles to two: one for headings and another for body text, to avoid visual confusion or distractions.
  • Colors: Colors can evoke emotions and highlight critical points, but their overuse can lead to a cluttered and confusing presentation. A limited palette of two to three main colors, complemented by a simple background, can help you draw attention to key elements without overwhelming the audience.
  • Pictures: Pictures can communicate complex ideas quickly and memorably but choosing the right images is key. Images or pictures should be big (perhaps 20-25% of the page), bold, and have a clear purpose that complements the slide’s text.
  • Layout: Don’t overcrowd your slides with too much information. When in doubt, adhere to the principle of simplicity, and aim for a clean and uncluttered layout with plenty of white space around text and images. Think phrases and bullets, not sentences.

As an intern or early career professional, chances are that you’ll be tasked with making or giving a presentation in the near future. Whether you’re pitching an idea, reporting market research, or sharing something else, a great presentation can give you a competitive advantage, and be a powerful tool when aiming to persuade, educate, or inspire others.

The Eucharist can be thought of as a school for becoming a more synodal church, Chicago Cardinal Blase Cupich said during a July 18 presentation at the National Eucharistic Congress.

Addressing a hotel ballroom packed with a diverse audience of Catholics, Cupich made several connections between the real presence of Jesus in the Eucharist, the central theme of the congress, and synodality.

"Whenever we take the Eucharist, we gradually become freer to take up the mission of Christ," Cupich said in his presentation, titled "Synodality as a Mode of Being Church."

Cupich, a delegate to the 2021-2024 Synod of Bishops on synodality, described the concept of synodality as a model where Catholics, lay and ordained, dialogue and listen to one another while engaging in communal discernment to navigate the church's path through history.

"We are called to be responsible for one another as we journey through time to what God has promised us," Cupich said.

That process of dialogue and discernment is intricately linked to prayer and the saving mission of Jesus Christ, said Cupich and Bishop Daniel Flores of Brownsville, Texas, who coordinated the U.S. bishops' synod efforts and is also a U.S. delegate to the synod.

"There is much to think about in the relationship between liturgy and the modus in which the church acts on mission," said Flores, who joined Cupich for a panel discussion on synodality along with José Manuel De Urquidi, a synod delegate for Latin America.

De Urquidi said that prayer and the Eucharist marked the beginning of "everything" at the first global synod gathering in October 2023. Synod delegates  will meet again, Oct. 2-27, at the Vatican for their final assembly.

Released June 20 , the working document for the synod, known as the  instrumentum laboris , asks synod delegates to confront several pressing issues — such as the possibility of women deacons, ordaining married men to the priesthood and better welcoming LGBTQ+ Catholics — in considering how the church can transform and expand its institutional structures.

But taking up those tasks cannot be separated from prayer or being rooted in the Eucharist, De Urquidi said.

"We need to root ourselves in the mission of Jesus," he added.

Framing synodality as what  God expects of the Catholic Church in the third millennium, Pope Francis has called for a synodal conversion in the church in part by encouraging the hierarchy to regularly consult the lay faithful and to listen to the experiences of marginalized communities and people on the peripheries of church life.

"Synodality calls us to a new way of thinking about our Christian life, and a new way of being a model for the church," Cupich said.

In keeping with that vision, Cupich reminded his audience, the Vatican in recent years has encouraged the Synod of Bishops to discuss sensitive issues, as well as making it possible for lay Catholic men and women to be fully voting members of the synod.

Those changes, however, have raised  concerns among some conservative Catholics , especially in the Anglophone world, that the synod risks undermining the church's teachings on hotly contested issues such as the all-male priesthood, homosexuality and contraception.

Compared to initiatives such as the bishops' three-year National Eucharistic Revival, of which the congress is the climactic event, synodality has had difficulty garnering traction in the United States. Cardinal Christophe Pierre, the Vatican's ambassador to the United States, has  at times urged the U.S. bishops to embrace synodality.

Part of the problem, Cupich told his audience on July 18, is the bottom-line, problem-solving mentality that predominates in the United States.

"We struggle with synodality because we want to fix things right away," said Cupich, who added that he believes a crisis of faith exists in the church in the sense that Catholics do not fully understand what it means for Jesus to be risen from the dead.

"The Mass is not about making Jesus present as though he's off in heaven, doing his thing, and we occasionally get an audience with him," said Cupich, who noted that the Second Vatican Council "made it clear" that Christ is "always present in the church, exercising his priestly ministry in the world."

"In the Mass, the focus has to be on what Christ is doing and what happens to us as people and as a community, being transformed to take up more fully his mission to bring justice, peace and love to the world.

"The Eucharist should empower us to take up the mission," Cupich said.

To illustrate synodality in action, audience members were asked to participate in "conversations in the Spirit" where they reflected on how the Mass formed them as Catholics and prepared them to share the Gospel in the world.

Several people said they came away with a newfound appreciation and understanding of synodality.

"I really enjoyed our roundtable discussion. I think it was just so invigorating to hear the experiences that each of us have as we come from different walks of life," said Mary Rose Robbins, a resident of Glen Dale, West Virginia.

Diana Arizmendi, a resident of Waukegan, Illinois, said the exercise in synodality was a "nice reminder of the unity of the church and how the Eucharist really is the food that binds us all together."

"Being gathered here and being able to share with one another," Arizmendi said, "was a great reminder and encouragement that we're all walking toward heaven together, and the Eucharist is really feeding and nourishing us along the way."

Bishop Cozzens: ‘We expect miracles’ at US Eucharistic Congress

By Christopher Wells and Joseph Tulloch

Tens of thousands of pilgrims arrived in the US city of Indianapolis on Tuesday at the conclusion of the pilgrimage to the National Eucharistic Congress, taking place from 17-21 July.

More than 100,000 faithful took part at various points in the pilgrimage, which began on 17 May and covered more than 6,500 miles – over 10,000 kilometres – along four pilgrimage routes from every corner of the United States.

Pilgrims took part in a welcoming Mass celebrated by Indianapolis Archbishop Charles Thompson, and concelebrated by numerous bishops, including Cardinal Antonio Tagle – Pope Francis’ delegate to the Congress – and Bishop Andrew Cozzens of Crookston, Minnesota, the chair of the organizing committee for the Congress.

The Tenth National Eucharistic Congress in the United States marks a high point in ongoing National Eucharistic Revival sponsored by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops.

Called to be missionary disciples

The Eucharistic Congress is the culmination of the second year of the Revival, dedicated to revival in parishes throughout the country. “It’s a missionary year where we’re inviting every Catholic to take up their call from Pope Francis to be missionary disciples,” said Bishop Cozzens in a phone interview with Vatican Radio.

Bishop Cozzens says the American bishops took their inspiration from Pope Francis’ programmatic 2013 Apostolic Exhortation Evangelii gaudium , on the proclamation of the Gospel in today’s world.

“Encounter and mission are the two staples of our Eucharistic Revival in Congress”

“Encounter and mission are two staples of our Eucharistic Revival in Congress,” Bishop Cozzens said, explaining, “We want people to encounter Jesus and then send them on mission, which we got, of course, from Evangelii gaudium. ”

Expecting miracles

Asked about his expectations for the Eucharistic Congress, Bishop Cozzens said, “We’re expecting to see miracles – because when people come together in Jesus’s Name, He shows up so powerfully. “So we expect deep conversions, healings, and most of all, a real growth in missionary spirit.”

“We're expecting to see miracles”

‘We want to be set on fire’

Highlighting the theme of the third and final year of the Eucharistic Revival, Bishop Cozzens said, “Our goal is to help the Church in the United States make this transformation that Pope Francis has called for, the missionary transformation, so that we can become the missionaries we’re called to be.”

Bishop Cozzens added, “We feel really honoured to be gathered at a time in our world when there’s a real need for Jesus and His life. We know that Jesus in the Eucharist gave His life for the world. And we want to be set on fire to be able to bring Him to those who are most in need.”
