Baz Luhrmann dreamed of making the Australian " Gone With the Wind ," and so he has, with much of that film's lush epic beauty and some of the same awkwardness with a national legacy of racism. This is the sort of film described as a "sweeping romantic melodrama," a broad family entertainment that would never have been made without the burning obsession of its producers (Luhrmann for "Australia," David O. Selznick for "GWTW"). Coming from a director known for his punk-rock "William Shakespeare's Romeo + Juliet" and the visual pyrotechnics of " Moulin Rouge ," it is exuberantly old-fashioned, and I mean that as a compliment.

The movie is set in 1939. Hitler has invaded Poland. The armies of the free world will need beef. In England, Lady Sarah Ashley (Nicole Kidman) is alarmed by reports that her husband is philandering on his enormous cattle station, Faraway Downs, in northern Australia. She comes to see for herself, but arrives to find him murdered. Now the owner of an expanse large as some countries, she dresses as if for tea. The British long followed the practice of dressing in warm climates as if they were not, and Lady Ashley keeps up the standard.

Here is the situation she finds: Drover ( Hugh Jackman ), named for his trade, is a rough-hewn free-standing cowboy who has never seen a woman anything like her. He runs cattle drives. She wants him to become manager of the station, but he's a rolling stone. At Faraway Downs, he drives with experienced Aborigine ranch hands, and has under his special protection the Aboriginal boy Nullah ( Brandon Walters ), who is 11 or 12. Nullah's grandfather is King George ( David Gulpilil , who played a boy about Nullah’s age in “ Walkabout ” from 1971). He has been accused of the murder of Lady Ashley's husband, and has fled to a mountaintop, from which he seemingly sees everything. Nullah is a beautiful boy, biracial, bright, filled with insight, and he provides the narration for the film.

As "Australia" is essentially a Western, there must be an evil rancher with a posse of stooges, and there is: King Carney ( Bryan Brown ). He wants to add Faraway Downs to his empire. Much will depend on whether Carney or Faraway can be first to deliver cattle in the port city of Darwin. Lady Ashley, prepared to sell out to Carney, sees things that make her reconsider, and determines to join Drover, Nullah and a ragtag band on a cattle drive that will eventually lead into No Man's Land. Meanwhile, the delicate lady and the rugged Drover begin to fall in love, just like Scarlett O'Hara and Rhett Butler.

She grows to love the boy and emotionally adopts him. Nullah is under constant threat of being swept up by the local police, enforcing a national policy of "capturing" part-white aboriginal children and taking them to missions where they can "have the black bred out of them" and trained to be servants. Incredibly, this practice was ended by Australia only in 1973. And you think we were slow to change.

All the elements are in place for a cross between "GWTW" and " Red River ," with an infusion of " Rabbit-Proof Fence " (2002) and World War II. Luhrmann, known for his close work with the camera, pulls back here to show the magnificent landscape and the enormity of the cattle drive. The cattle are supplied mostly by CGI, which explains how they can seem to stampede toward a high cliff. No doubt some will find this scene hokey, but it also provides the movie's dramatic high point, with Nullah channeling the teachings of his grandfather.

It's a great scene, but it also dramatizes the film's uncertainty about race. Luhrmann is rightly contemptuous of Australia's "re-education" policies; he shows Nullah taking pride in his heritage and paints the white enforcers as the demented racists they were. But "Australia" also accepts aboriginal mystical powers lock, stock and barrel, and that I think may be condescending.

Well, what do you believe? Can the aboriginal people materialize wherever they desire? Become invisible? Are they telepaths? Can they receive direct guidance from the dead? Yes, certainly, in a spiritual or symbolic sense. But in a literal sense? If Nullah is prescient at some times, then why does he turn into a scared little boy who needs rescuing? The Australians, having for decades treated their native people as subhuman, now politely endow them with godlike qualities. I am not sure that is a compliment. What they suffered, how they survived, how they prevailed and what they have accomplished, they have done as human beings, just as we all must.

The film is filled with problems caused by its acceptance of mystical powers. If Nullah is all-seeing and prescient at times, then why does he turn into a scared little boy who needs rescuing? The climactic events require action sequences as thrilling as they are formulaic, as is the love story. Scarlett and Rhett were products of the same society. Lady Sarah and Drover meet across a divide that separates not only social class but lifestyle, education and geography. Such a gap can be crossed, but not during anything so simple as a moonlit night with "Over the Rainbow" being played on a harmonica.

"GWTW," for all its faults and racial stereotyping, at least represented a world its makers believed in. "Australia" envisions a world intended largely as fable, and that robs it of some power. Still, what a gorgeous film, what strong performances, what exhilarating images and -- yes, what sweeping romantic melodrama. The kind of movie that is a movie, with all that the word promises and implies.

Review by Brian Eggert November 27, 2008

australia movie poster

Baz Luhrmann’s Australia doesn’t take itself seriously but expects audiences to feel a connection nonetheless. Unfortunately, the film attempts to evoke emotions it can’t muster, and it would rather spend its time pretending to be a Golden Age classic. Presented with grandiose cinematography, melodramatic characters, and an epic plot involving the identity of a whole country, the film also bears an uneven tone, uses too much obvious computer animation to illustrate its visual magnificence, and leans on a screenplay with no direction. Without a moment of restraint, the result is a product of self-indulgence in the worst possible way.

Set in northern Australia just before World War II, the film begins when the recently widowed, snobbish Englishwoman Lady Sarah Ashley (Nicole Kidman) inherits the haggard Faraway Downs, a cattle farm sought after by crooked ranch owner King Carney (Bryan Brown). Lady Ashley fires ranch employee Neil Fletcher (David Wenham) when she’s told he steals cattle for Carney, to deliver them as livestock for military chow. Hoping to outbid corrupt beef tycoon Carney for the military contract, she hires a rugged local cattle drover, named simply Drover (Hugh Jackman), to help move the herd across the territory, sell them to the military, and then restore Faraway Downs to its former splendor.

Throughout the nearly three-hour film, we’re most interested in the fate of Nullah (Brandon Walters), an aboriginal boy whose father was white. He takes to Lady Ashley, who cannot have children herself, and so attempts to care for the child like a mother. As recently as 1973, when the practice was banned, Australian officials “apprehended” part-white aboriginal children for “reprocessing” into white homes as servants to “have the black bred out of them.” For the endearing Nullah, who also narrates the film, he’s at odds with his dedication to Lady Ashley, his avoidance of the “coppers” that will take him away, and whether or not he’s ready to go on walkabout with his grandfather King George (David Gulpilil, from Nicolas Roeg’s Walkabout ). Presented as a metaphor for how Australia’s European settlers eventually merged into the local population, later becoming whole by their unification during WWII, the film’s story has potential that is squandered on uncertain directing.

These plot elements are gathered into a hodgepodge of sewn-together parts invented by other, better directors. Luhrmann’s influences come from the top names in grand romantic epics, striving to match the classicism of John Ford’s The Searchers , the introspection of David Lean’s Lawrence of Arabia , and the scope of the mother of all epics, Gone with the Wind . Fans of those classics might play a game where they identify which scenes Luhrmann steals from which film. The outcome, assembled by a modern-day Dr. Frankenstein, is an expertly polished monster that awakens without visible stitches and nasty scars, but like any plastic surgery case, it’s evident they’ve been pieced together artificially.

Take, for example, Luhrmann’s insistent use of The Wizard of Oz . His characters are dreamers seeking out the seemingly impossible—be it to create a family, to restore Faraway Downs, or to find their place among the distinct cultural Selves present in Australia. Relating their dreams to the song “Over the Rainbow”, contemporary for the film’s setting, becomes the theme. But it’s already the theme of a classic movie. Hence, Australia cannot be its own film; too many exist inside it already.

Luhrmann had his eye on this production for years, laboring in love to create a massive film that would encompass his homeland’s cultural identity. Directors occasionally lose sight of their vision in the presence of a project this colossal and hopeful. Too often filmmakers seek out their dream projects mid-to-late career and find, because they struggle less now that they’re successful, the end product is not the film they once envisioned. Case in point, Martin Scorsese wanted to make Gangs of New York since the 1970s; when he finally did in 2002, the result was not only his biggest disappointment, but nothing about the picture aligned with his established style or adherence to his own brand of verisimilitude. The same can be said for Oliver Stone’s Alexander . And, of course, Australia is the latest example of what happens when directors try too hard.

Another problem is Luhrmann’s off-putting and uneven tone. Early scenes contain wild and zany, emotionally cartoonish antics like something out of his tragically overrated Moulin Rouge! , whereas later, that playful tone abruptly disappears. By the time he expects us to take the film’s events seriously, any potential for emotional connection is lost. Perhaps he was hoping to ease the audience in with humor. Certainly, Gone with the Wind began with frivolities, aimed with seriousness, and fired with perseverance through historical tragedy. Where the two differ is Nullah’s narration throughout, which sets up the conflicts for each act as opposed to letting the melodrama unfold naturally and progressively. Instead, the movie fails to create any interconnectedness for the story’s episodic structure.

Benefitting from a cast of Australian performers, Luhrmann has Jackman, Kidman, and newcomer Brandon Walters to fall back on. Jackman replaced Russell Crowe when Crowe backed out, giving the role of Drover that singular sexy Western hero element few can pull off, and then also offers an extraordinary acting range as a bonus. Kidman might be in too deep, as she’s unable to capture the presence and strength needed for this type of role; unlike Vivien Leigh, she does not make the transition from snooty and prissy to an honorable heroine. Most impressive is Walters, the adorable youngster who projects innocence with equal parts simplicity and substance.

There’s undeniable beauty here, except unlike those epics from which he steals, Luhrmann doesn’t know when to dwell on that beauty. His cutting is fast, distractingly so. Not Michael Bay fast, but the cuts are limited in their capacity to involve us. Epic filmmaking relies on soaking up the audience into the vast world presented onscreen. Lurhmann is noted for his post-modern speed and lighthearted spin. But such impatience doesn’t suit this story or its epic movie intent. Australia loses us from time to time, while wholly enthralling us at others. Overall, the scheme doesn’t work, playing out like two or more storylines tagged together, when focusing on one, specifically the tale of Nullah’s self-discovery, could easily capture our hearts.

Best Australian horror films – top 20

australia movie reviews rotten tomatoes

Little Monsters. Image: Universal Pictures.

Horror is subjective, but we can probably agree that it’s meant to be creepy, crawly and downright scary. The following 20 films, in no particular order, may or may not be the most scary Australian horrors ever made (let us know if there’s one we’re missing) but they’re guaranteed to have you clutching the cushion on movie night.

The Babadook (2014)

australia movie reviews rotten tomatoes

The Babadook. Image: Umbrella Entertainment.

A young boy called Sam starts seeing things and becomes convinced there’s a monster in his house … and not in a good way. His mum, Amelia, grows ever more concerned and paranoid. Written and directed by Jennifer Kent and starring Essie Davis, Noah Wiseman and Daniel Henshall, the film has a 98% critics rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and was ranked by the site last year as the 13th best horror film of all time. The fact the monster keeps itself hidden for the longest time only adds to the suspense and rising terror.

Relic (2020)

australia movie reviews rotten tomatoes

Relic. Image: Stan.

Starring Robyn Nevin, Emily Mortimer and Bella Heathcote, Natalie Erika James’ film manages to combine a genuinely creepy haunted house with a darkly poetic – and confronting – depiction of dementia. The twists often see the story taking turns for the worse (as far as the characters are concerned) but not always, meaning we can’t help but stay on our (shaking) toes throughout. As Mark Kermode wrote in the UK’s Observer:

I’d wager that this spine-tingling, heartbreaking tale of a woman with Alzheimer’s becoming lost in the labyrinthine corridors of her mind, and her home, has a universal power that will resonate with anyone, regardless of personal experience. Relic review – heartbreaking horror about Alzheimer’s

Hounds of Love (2016)

Image: Label Distribution.

In 1987, a husband and wife kidnap and torture a young woman called Vicki in Perth’s suburbs – and Vicki’s only option is to try to turn the couple against each other before they kill her. Ben Young’s film, starring Emma Booth, Ashleigh Cummings and Stephen Curry, is based on several real-life murders, including the Moorhouse Murders, which saw a Perth couple abuse and murder four women, and attempt to murder a fifth, at their Perth home in 1986. Needless to say, it’s an extremely gruesome film, with Kevin Maher writing in the Times (UK):

Hounds of Love is a chance for everyone else to enjoy an utterly punishing night at the cinema, with acute stomach tension and mild stress-induced nausea. The Times

Celia (1989)

australia movie reviews rotten tomatoes

Celia. Image: Hoyts Distribution.

Young Celia is having a hard time of it in 1950s Melbourne. Her parents ban her from playing with the neighbours’ kids because they’re commies, she discovers her beloved gran’s corpse and her pet bunny, Murgatroyd, is taken away by the authorities due to rabbit overpopulation. I mean – give her a break!

She retreats into a world of fantasy and, with the commie kids, starts making, and then stabbing, effigies. Often cited as a strong example of Cold-War-anxiety-turned-cinematic-treat, debate still continues as to whether it’s actually a horror film or a straight drama. In any case, Rebecca Elizabeth Smart is great as the young Celia, and this film by writer-director Ann Turner is going to haunt you.

Talk to Me (2023)

Talk to Me. Image: A24.

A crew of Australian teens play around with a ceramic hand that lets them communicate (via possession) with the dead, but they have to be careful to not let the possessor stay longer than 90 seconds or things will go very badly for everyone.

The debut feature by Australian brothers Danny and Michael Philippou recently became A24’s most successful horror at the box office and a sequel is now in the pipeline. One of the film’s many strengths is, no matter how sure you feel about what’s likely to happen, you’ll still be jumping out of your seat and/ or hiding your face in sheer terror.

Bloody Hell (2020)

Alister Grierson’s horror comedy, starring Ben O’Toole, Caroline Craig and Matthew Sunderland, tells the story of Rex Coen, a US veteran who goes on the run from his troubled past, only for things to get much, much worse. The moral? A fresh start can be a fresh hell. Think horror, comedy and rom-com rolled into an entertaining, if bloody, pulp. The film has a 91% critics rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with the following critics consensus:

For genre fans in the mood to watch some darkly funny mayhem,  Bloody Hell  lives up to its title in all the best ways. Rotten Tomatoes .

Bedevil (1993)

Tracey Moffat’s film is often cited as the first feature to be directed by an Indigenous Australian. The trilogy of stories it contains are inspired by the stories the artist heard from the Irish-Australian and Aboriginal relatives in her family. All are surreal and engrossing, whether it’s Mr Chuck , which sees a young Indigenous boy pursued by the ghost of an American GI, Choo Choo Choo Choo , in which a family is plagued by invisible trains and the ghost of a young girl, or Lovin’ the Spin I’m In , in which a young couple die but continue, as spirits, to dance together.

Family Demons (2009)

Ursula Dabrowsky’s 2009 film lives up to its title. When a teenage girl snaps and murders her serially abusive alcoholic mum, that should be the end of it – but the mum returns as a nasty spirit to make her life a waking nightmare. Shot on a budget of just $6,500, the film won Best Australian Director at the 2009 Night of Horror Film Festival in Sydney. As per the reviews website Scary Minds:

Family Demons  is one of those movies that takes out your pre-conceptions of what a dark genre film should be and replaces them with questioning about what you have just seen. Scary Minds

Picnic at Hanging Rock (1975)

Picnic at Hanging Rock. BEF Film Distributors.

If there’s one thing European Australians like it’s a tale about children being swallowed by the vast and foreboding landscape. Which is one of the reasons Peter Weir’s 1975 adaptation of Joan Lindsay’s 1967 novel strikes a deep and gloomy chord.

A group of girls from a boarding school go missing during an expedition to Hanging Rock on Valentine’s Day, 1900 … but what really happened to them? Starring Rachel Roberts, Helen Morse and Jacki Weaver, the film is described on  Rotten Tomatoes  as: ‘moody, unsettling, and enigmatic – a masterpiece of Australian cinema and a major early triumph for director Peter Weir’.

Snowtown (2011)

Snowtown. Image: Madman Films.

Justin Kurzel’s 2011 directorial debut, also known as The Snowtown Murders , starts with an abused 16-year-old boy in Adelaide who starts hanging out with his mum’s new violent and homophobic partner and continues with a torture and murder spree. Based on the story of the real-life Snowtown murders, which saw a series of bodies found in barrels – many in an abandoned bank vault in South Australia – it’s a brutal tale chillingly brought to life, with many critics praising the filmmaking while baulking at the graphic violence. It has an 85% critics rating on Rotten Tomatoes , with Jyoti Roy describing it for Bitch Media as:

a fascinating psychological study, both on the effects on the audience and the arc of the characters as we are see them (and ourselves) slowly consumed by this bleak, murderous, poverty stricken town in rural Australia. Not a film for entertainment, but as a piece of art … a very bleak, hard to watch, chilling piece of art. Bitch Media

Alison’s Birthday (1981)

Alison’s Birthday. Image: Australian Film Institute.

The unbreakable link between teenagerdom and horror is present and correct in Ian Coughlan’s 1981 film. Alison, 16, and her two classmates get their hands on a ouija board, with one of the girls – Chrissie – becoming possessed by a spirit claiming to be Alison’s dad, and coming a cropper shortly afterwards. Nearly three years pass before Alison returns home for her nineteenth. Expect creepy crones, Celtic cults, standing stones, devil worship and attempted kidnappings – it’s not the celebration Alison was hoping for.

If psychological horror is your thing, you’ll love Joel Anderson’s mockumentary in which a 16-year-old girl drowns while swimming with her family, only to prompt – it seems – inexplicable events in the family home. A psychic comes on board to deal with what appears to be a haunting, the girl’s body is exhumed and a her mobile phone is discovered under a tree at Lake Mungo. The film has a 96% critics rating on Rotten Tomatoes , with Anton Bitel describing it in Projected Figures as:

a sophisticated, adult tale that blends complex, compelling emotions with reflexive commentary on film as a ‘medium’ of memory, manipulation and magic… a classic supernatural enigma, once seen never forgotten. Projected Figures

In what might bring unfortunate Covid-era flashbacks, a father searches for someone to protect his daughter as an epidemic courses through Australia – and by epidemic, the film means a virus that turns people into rabid zombies within a couple of days of infection.

If you enjoyed The Road (2009) and hanker for some George A Romero-esque action in the Australian outback then this might be for you. Martin Freeman, more commonly known for his comic turns, was widely praised for bringing emotional depth to his character.

Financed and produced by Screen Australia, and shot in Sydney, Abe Forsyth’s 2019 film is that rarest of things: a post-apocalyptic musical action comedy horror. A musician on the wane, a children’s TV presenter and a kindergarten teacher join forces to protect a group of young schoolkids during a zombie outbreak. Lupita Nyong’o was widely praised for her performance, and the child stars were applauded for being believable and unsaccharine . As Kim Newman wrote in Sight & Sound:

The trick of a zombie gross-out comedy is to balance extreme splatter, suspense and broad-strokes satire with a sweet nature and whimsy to take the edge off potential misanthropy. It’s not an easy mix, but Little Monsters works like a charm. Sight & Sound

The Well (1997)

The Well. Image: Southern Star Xanadu.

Based on the 1986 Elizabeth Jolly novel of the same name, and starring Miranda Otto and Pamela Rabe, Samantha Lang’s film is technically a drama but is chilling and moody enough to qualify as a horror, depending on your taste. Hester is a loner whose life is upended by the arrival of a troubled younger woman, Katherine, the new house help at her father’s isolated NSW farm. Flush with money after her father dies and she sells the farm, Hester wants to travel to Europe with Katherine – until tragedy strikes and all eyes turn to the farm well.

It has plenty of detractors, including those who wanted more scariness, but was also praised for its examination of female relationships and sexual repression. As Maitland McDonagh wrote for Film Journal International:

This sublimely creepy, low-key film is not for all tastes. But The Well casts a haunting spell. Rotten Tomatoes

Wolf Creek (2005)

The outback shows itself yet again to be a place where things can go really wrong, really quickly, and not just because you forgot your water bottle and Factor 50. Three backpackers doing their thing are taken prisoner and hunted by a psychopathic serial killer, in a tale marketed as being ‘based on true events’. Written, co-produced and directed by NIDA graduate Greg McLean, and shot in South Australia, it split critics, nearly all of whom agreed it did what it was intended to do – scare the bejeezus out of us – but not all of whom agreed on the means, as summed up in the Rotten Tomatoes critics consensus:

Though  Wolf Creek  is effectively horrific, it is still tasteless exploitation. Rotten Tomatoes

Killing Ground (2016)

Killing Ground. Image: IFC Midnight.

It doesn’t seem to matter how often Australians head into the bush – they never realise terrible things will happen, at least in horror-movie land. In this case, a couple’s run-of-the-mill camping trip leads to them witnessing a brutal crime and … well, things just get darker from there. Directed by Damien Power and starring Aaron Pederson, Harriet Dyer and Ian Meadows, the film follows the Wolf Creek playbook in terms of its realistic (maybe too realistic, some critics argued) depictions of violence. It won plaudits for its narrative structure and, if your stomach can handle it, scariness, with Luke Buckmaster writing in The Guardian that it:

combines great aesthetic elegance – including beautiful cinematography and naturalistic editing – with an acrid, lingering foulness, derived from knife-edge performances and a terrifying premise executed with airtight verisimilitude. The Guardian

Wake in Fright (1971)

Wake in Fright. Image: United Artists .

Outback Australia is back to frighten you, this time via Ted Kotcheff’s film about a young schoolteacher who finds himself stranded in Tiboonda, NSW, where he is forced to work to pay back the financial bond he signed with the government to do his teacher-training. Losing all his money in repeated games of two-up, he falls into a life of alcohol, debauchery and self-loathing, feeling ever more contempt for the townspeople. It’s based on Kenneth Cook’s 1961 novel (same name) and stoked controversy for, among other things, a hunting scene that saw real kangaroos being shot and killed.

It has a 97% critics rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with the consensus that:

A disquieting classic of Australian cinema,  Wake in Fright  surveys a landscape both sun-drenched and ruthlessly dark. Rotten Tomatoes

The Loved Ones (2009)

australia movie reviews rotten tomatoes

The Loved Ones. Image: Madman Films.

Sean Byrne’s 2009 debut starring Xavier Samuel, Robin McLeavy and John Brumpton, comes with a central message we’d all do well to heed: don’t turn down your classmate’s invitation to prom night, especially if she’s called Lola Stone … chances are you’ll be kidnapped by Lola and her dad, Eric, and will have to attend a party with Lola anyway, but it won’t be nearly as good as the prom and you’ll spend the whole evening contemplating how much better it would have been to be drinking punch with your peers than the horror that’s unfolding.

Shot in Melbourne, including at at Box Hill Secondary and Kew High School, the film serves up comedy, sadism and a satisfying twist. It has an almighty 98% critics rating on Rotten Tomatoes , with Eric Kohn writing for IndieWire that:

It’s a terrifying masterpiece that turns high school drama into a literal dead zone.

Someone holding a remote pointed at a TV with the Netflix logo on it

Netflix is rewinding the clocks with a fresh slate of movies in July 2024 that includes some real cinema classics that will down a treat with subscribers.

The streaming service has added the entire “Back to the Future” trilogy for those looking for a nostalgia throwback that still holds up to this day. And that’s not the only worthwhile trilogy that’s just arrived on Netflix either, Sam Rami’s trio of “ Spider-Man ” flicks has dropped too. And these are just the start of the worthwhile new additions to the Netflix library this month.

Every single pick on this list has scored at least 90% on the review aggregate site Rotten Tomatoes , which while not a castiron guarantee that they’ll appeal to you, does speak to their overall quality. So here are the new to Netflix movies you should stream right now…

'American Hustle' (2013)

American Hustle Official TRAILER 1 (2013) - Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence Movie HD - YouTube

As its 92% Rotten Tomatoes score indicates, “American Hustle” was well received upon release in December 2013. However, its reputation has taken a hit over the past decade after a less-than-kind reevaluation has caused many to brand it "overrated." Nevertheless, I stand by the flick. “American Hustle” remains a flashy comedy that engages throughout and features one heck of a cast list, including Christian Bale, Amy Adams, Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence and Jeremy Renner.

Directed by David O. Russell, “American Hustle” is inspired by a true story and focuses on two con artists, Irv (Bale) and Sydney (Adams), who are forced by an FBI agent (Cooper) to work undercover within a sting operation to catch the corrupt mayor of New Jersey (Jeremy Renner) red-handed. But the whole operation is threatened by Irv’s jealous wife (Lawrence), who might just bring the whole house of cards crashing down.

'Back to the Future' (1985)

Back To The Future (1985) Theatrical Trailer - Michael J. Fox Movie HD - YouTube

Calling “Back to the Future” an ‘80s classic is a bit like saying Lionel Messi is quite good at soccer. This sci-fi comedy with a time-travel twist is downright legendary, and for good reason, too. The Robert Zemeckis-directed movie is set to celebrate its 40th anniversary in July 2025, but it remains everybody as quotable, thrilling and relentlessly enjoyable as ever.

A young Michael J. Meeting younger versions of his parents, he has to play cupid and ensure they fall in love or else he’ll cease to exist. Plus, Marty must also figure out how to get back to the present.

'Captain Phillips' (2013)

Captain Phillips Official Trailer #1 (2013) - Tom Hanks Somali Pirate Movie HD - YouTube

Tom Hanks gives one of his most powerful performances in “Captain Phillips," a gripping thriller from “Jason Bourne” director Paul Greengrass. Hanks plays the eponymous ship captain onboard a merchant vessel that is boarded by Somali pirates, led by the determined Muse (Barkhad Abdi). Phillips aims to protect his crew at all costs, while the pirates hatch a scheme to earn millions of dollars in ransom money. What follows is an almost unbearably dramatic standoff between both sides.

Based on a true story, “Captain Phillips” is one of the most intense movies you’ll ever see, and finds great success by trading Hollywood cheese for a grounded and gritty tone. This isn’t “Die Hard on a Boat." Phillips isn’t an action hero. Instead, Hanks portrays a brave, but normal, man put in an impossible situation with real humanity. Not to mention Abdi is similarly fantastic. "Captain Phillips" is not to be missed.

'Spider-Man 2' (2004)

Spider-Man 2 (2004) - Trailer - YouTube

Before the explosion in popularity of comic book movies in the 2010s, the best the genre had to offer was a web-slinging trilogy directed by Sam Raimi (who recently reunited with Marvel to helm 2022’s “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness”). While the first “Spider-Man” released in 2002 holds a special place in my affection, there’s little doubt that “Spider-Man 2” is the stand-out entry in the trilogy. Even now many consider Spidey’s best big-screen effort .

In “Spider-Man 2”, Peter Parker (Tobey Maguire) faces off against Dr. Otto Ocatvius (Alfred Molina) who has been transformed into the villainous Doc Ock following a failed experiment. At the same time, Parker is struggling more than ever to balance his crime-fighting and making time for his best friend Harry Osborn (James Franco) and love interest, Mary Jane Watson (Kirsten Dunst). There's action, adventure comedy, and the super sequel is crammed to bursting with iconic online memes.

'Matilda' (1996)

Matilda (1996) Trailer #1 - YouTube

In my books, “Matilda” is one of the best family movies ever made. This beloved ‘90s fantasy comedy is adapted from the Roald Dahl children’s book of the same name and was directed by Danny DeVito (who also features in a small but memorable supporting role). It’s got all the ingredients needed for a perfect movie for all ages, it’s funny, charming, surprisingly thrilling (with a couple of neat story beats), and has a great message at its core. What’s not to love?

Matilda Wormwood (Mara Wilson) doesn’t fit in with her cruel family. And if having uncaring parents at home wasn’t bad enough, her school’s principal, Miss Trunchbull (Pam Ferris) is even more evil. Fortunately, she has the support of the lovely Miss Honey (Embeth Davidtz) to help make her days bearable. But when Matilda discovers she possesses magical powers, she realizes that she just might be able to change her story and fight back against her bullies once and for all.

32 Rewatchable Movies With 90% Or More On Rotten Tomatoes

Watch these again and again. And again.

Tom Cruise in Top Gun: Maverick

Given that people are watching less and less cable and there are myriad pathways to finding good films now, how do you figure out what to watch? We've compiled a list of great films, all with the goal of marking them as movies fans can return to again and again and find something new each time.

So why 90%? There are plenty of Rotten Tomatoes movies with 100% scores for lower-budget projects that may only have a smattering of reviews. In addition, there are plenty of other movies with great scores, like Citizen Kane , that I wouldn’t necessarily argue are films that should be thrown on for the fifth or sixth time on a Saturday night.

Marlon Brando in The Godfather

The Godfather

The Godfather’s so famous that years later You’ve Got Mail used the phrase "go to the mattresses" when Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan 's characters were coming up with a business plan. A quintessential mobster drama, it’s still being watched by new generations of movie buffs coming of age. If it’s been a bit since you've seen the 97% positive-rated movie, dive in.

Buzz Lightyear in the claw tank with the aliens, Toy Story 1.

A film with a cool 100% critics score, Toy Story really put Pixar on the map as storytellers and ended up spawning a whole franchise of beloved characters like Woody, Buzz, Andy, T-Rex, Jesse, Mr. Potatohead and so many more. The definition of rewatchable, the movie holds up years and years after its original family audience has created families of their own, and there are sequels you can rewatch to boot!

Gene Kelly dances with a lamppost in famous scene from Singin' In The Rain.

Singin’ In The Rain

The Gene Kelly and Debbie Reynolds classic has it all: Great set pieces, classic music numbers, a notable cast-- and it's so well-known that it used to be referenced in Disney's The Great Movie Ride. It’s actually one of the few movies on this list to also have a solid 100% Rotten Tomatoes score from critics. You don’t have to throw this one on during a rainy day, but it’s not a bad plan, either.

Christian Bale in The Dark Knight

The Dark Knight

Easily the most popular of Christopher Nolan ’s superhero films, with excellent performances from Christian Bale , Michael Caine , and Heath Ledger , it’s clear why The Dark Knight should be on this list. Though tragedy struck in relation to this movie with Heath Ledger’s death , it’s stood out as a testament to what superhero movies can really do if given the right budget and script.

Charlie Chaplin in Modern Times

Modern Times

A few Chaplin classics earned big scores from critics, but chief among these is Modern Times , the deft part-talkie that Chaplin put together in 1936 and that later became one of the first 25 films to make the Library of Congress’ preservation list. It’s not just historically significant, however. It’s a fun story about facing setbacks and still maintaining a positive attitude, and its memorable ending makes it easy to understand its 98% rating.

Tom Cruise as Pete Mitchell in Top Gun: Maverick

Top Gun: Maverick

Tom Cruise 's original Top Gun was not as much of a hit with critics, and currently has a middling rating on critical aggregators. That's not true of the 2022 follow-up Top Gun: Maverick , which boasts an exciting opening sequence, an all-star sequel cast , and an upgraded beach sequence . This garners it a well-deserved 96% Rotten Tomatoes rating. Even better? This is one you'll want to watch again and again.

Hiccup and Toothless meet and eat fish in How To Train Your Dragon.

How To Train Your Dragon

The definitive dragon film, Dreamworks' How To Train Your Dragon is not just a solid example of an animated movie, it's a good movie, period. The 2010 film launched two sequels, but it's the first movie that landed it a 99% critics score and is the one to revisit over and over again. It had some competition from Game Of Thrones on the TV side, but given it's a family film, I think it has the edge in the rewatch department.

Bette Davis on stairwell delivering 'It's gonna be a bumpy night' line in All About Eve.

All About Eve

The 99% approved 1950 Bette Davis film has been around for decades, but lines like “fasten your seatbelts, it’s going to be a bumpy night ” never, ever grow stale, even after repeat viewings. Nor does the story about the cutthroat nature of the Hollywood business ever grow tiring. All About Eve is a classic for a reason: It and Davis will never go out of style.

Daniel Craig looks out at London on the roof in Skyfall.

Technically, Skyfall has the second-best score for a Daniel Craig Bond movie, coming in at 92% behind Casino Royal 's 94%. Honestly, both have great rewatch value, and one could argue Royale is the more fun movie. But I find myself gravitating to Skyfall and its emotional gut-punch impact and memorable performances far more often. Do, I do this more often on a rainy day? Sure. Will you regret throwing it on? I highly doubt it.

Mandy Patinkin, Wallace Shawn, and Andre The Giant in The Princess Bride

The Princess Bride

If you've read the William Goldman book The Princess Bride is based on, you'll know exactly how the script for Rob Reiner's movie got to be so quotable. But the source material says nothing about how well the movie is put together and how funny the timing of the cast still is years and years later. I was at a party a few weeks ago when someone mentioned "I mean it" and a pal of mine responded, "Anybody want a peanut?" That kind of resonance can't be manufactured, it has to come about from years and years of people wearing out VHS tapes and DVDs and now streaming subscriptions. This one deserves better than its 96%.

Hugh Grant dances on stairs in Paddington 2 musical number.

Paddington 2

Like Daniel Craig's Bond films, It can be great to revisit a later movie in the franchise instead of the original, though the highly rated Paddington is also delightful. Why does the 99% Paddington 2 get the edge? Well, it hilarious ushered in Hugh Grant's era as not a leading man but a comedic character actor, and its plot --which sends Paddington to jail where he becomes known for making marmalade sandwiches -- is absolutely bonkers, in a good way. And there are musical numbers ! Throw it on now.

Thanos' planet in Avengers: Endgame

Avengers: Endgame

You may know the order MCU movies have come out, but you may not know there's a second list of the most rewatched MCU movies. Endgame lands high here, not just because it's one of a handful of Marvel movies that has over a 90% critics score, but because it's also at the top of lists including the most rewatched and highest-grossing Marvel films. It's a behemoth of a movie, and you obviously wouldn't be alone if you revisit it again and again.

Will Smith in Men in Black

Men In Black

A perpetual favorite of cable networks in the early aughts, Men in Black still holds up. The Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones movie has everything: Aliens, weird weaponry, a cool soundtrack, and it's a great blockbuster that's funny to boot. The marble scene at the end of the movie also marks one of the most striking and memorable endings to a movie from the 1990s, and it's no wonder critics gave it a 91%. It's more rewatchable than other Will Smith classics like The Pursuit of Happyness and King Richard to boot.

Keanu Reeves in John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum

John Wick Chapter 4: Parabellum

Honestly, it's hard to believe the fourth Keanu Reeves John Wick movie is the only one to break the 90% barrier with critics. It's a great movie, to be sure, and given the Chapter 4: Parabellum ending , it's certainly one worth revisiting. I just wish the startlingly good first movie in the franchise fit the specifications of this list too.

Denzel Washington sports mustache on porch in Devil in a Blue Dress.

Devil In A Blue Dress

Denzel Washington? Check. A seedy film noir feel? Check. A generally good mystery? Check. Intriguing side characters? Check, check, check, check. It's no wonder the flick has a 92% approval rating with all that it has going on and I didn't even mention Don Cheadle or Jennifer Beals yet. Devil in a Blue Dress is not only one of the best Denzel movies , it's also adapted from one of the great murder mysteries of all time, and it has held up long after its 1995 release.

Godzilla swims after a small boat attacking him in Godzilla Minus One Minus Color.

Godzilla Minus One

With a whopping 98% score, Godzilla Minus One overperformed at the box office and has become an even bigger behemoth through its subsequent streaming release. Not only has it remained popular, it has remained a great movie to revisit. It's a monstrous spectacle (pun very much intended), but it's the personal stories in Takashi Yamazaki's movie that make the human plot really shine.

Luisa and Mirabel looking up in Encanto.

There are actually a large volume of Disney movies that have landed more than a 90% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Most of these are re-watchable, to boot. However, Encanto is a particularly special entry into the genre as it introduces fans to the culture in Colombia and shares a story about family flaws, trauma and patterns that set up the future. OK, that doesn't sound all that fun, but it's great.

Kristen Wiig walking with sunglasses on on the plane in Bridesmaids.

Bridesmaids

It's tough for a comedy to land a score high enough to make this list, and Bridesmaids ekes in just under the wire. The movie is at a 90%, but I'd argue it's more than 90% hilarious; not everyone can have great taste. Kristen Wiig's seminal comedy is a rare female-centric ensemble movie with some memorable moments, including a plane scene and one very unique driving scene from Kristen Wiig. And that's not even getting to major moments from the additional cast, including Rose Byrne, Maya Rudolph and Melissa McCarthy.

Arnold Schwarzenagger in TheTerminator

The Terminator

Rewatchable for the catchphrases alone, The Terminator is both one of Arnold Schwarzenegger's and James Cameron's highest-rated films. It weighs in at a (somewhat shocking) 100% fresh rating 40 years after its initial release, proving that nostalgia can be a big factor when it comes to success. What's most interesting to me is that the movie dwarfs Terminator 2 , another big rewatchable winner, when it comes to the score.

Robert Patrick in Terminator 2: Judgment Day

Terminator 2: Judgment Day

Terminator 2 Judgment Day has a respectable 91% Rotten Tomatoes score, but if you were to ask me, given it's big budget, popcorn-y bent, this is the most fondly remembered movie in the long and storied franchise. I was a little surprised to learn it was the OG movie with the 100% score and not this one. Really though, it's comparing apples to apples, as both are great movies to throw on at home years later.

Dick Van Dyke and Julie Andrews sing together in musical scene with cartoons from Mary Poppins.

Mary Poppins

Just thinking of this movie might get any of a plethora of songs stuck in your head. "A Spoonful of Sugar" comes to mind first, but I'll go ahead and give spelling "Super-cali-fragil-istic-expi-ali-docious" a stab. If you say it loud enough you'll always sound precocious, after all. For decades, the Dick Van Dyke and Julie Andrews starrer has been a fan-favorite, much of which is due to its musical soundtrack, though the performances help. It will doubtless remain that way in the years to come. Having a 97% positive score from critics always helps though.

Laurie Strode walks down the street in Halloween's iconic opening scene.

A quintessentially repeatable horror film, Halloween is perfect for one particular evening of rewatching every year, and I don't think I need to spell out which. It's also a great entry into more hardcore horror for folk just getting into the genre, as well as a great entry point into Jamie Lee Curtis' oeuvre . At a 96% rating, it's pretty close to perfect, too.

Maui holding up HeiHei and Pua in Moana 2 trailer

There are plenty of movies with a rich musical history that have lived on for years and years after their release. In comparison, Moana is a relative newcomer, but its fun music ("You're Welcome" ) and rich, diverse storytelling have made it an instant classic and a continual go-to for families. I'd give credit to The Rock's popularity as a movie star , but this one really is a family favorite for audiences of all ages. If it's been a while, give the 95%-scored movie a shot.

Charlize Theron as Furiosa in Fury Road

Mad Max: Fury Road

Choosing the best Mad Max film is difficult, and in fact, four of them have a 90% rating or more on Rotten Tomatoes. The highest of these is Mad Max: Fury Road , the film that helped cement Charlize Theron as an action icon and went on to make nearly $380 million at the box office. Not bad for a dystopic sci-fi film, and if you bang through this one fast, there are plenty more highly rated franchise movies where that one came from.

Tom Cruise in armor looking concerned at something in Edge of Tomorrow

Edge Of Tomorrow

Edge of Tomorrow is one of Emily Blunt and Tom Cruise's most underrated movies . It was a box office flop that has a 91% rating with critics and similar audience ratings. Its Groundhog Day -combined-with-aliens premise makes it one of the best action films to rewatch again and again... and again and again and again.

the stars of groundhog day

Groundhog Day

This idea of reliving a day over again and again really originated with the 1993 fantasy classic starring Bill Murray and Andie MacDowell. For years, Groundhog Day was a staple on cable networks, and in the era of streaming, it's no wonder the movie continues to be a favorite romantic comedy and time loop film with a 94% score from critics.

Brody talking to Mayor Vaughn in Jaws

The theme music to Jaws alone makes it one of the more memorable and rewatchable flicks of all time. It helps that this was the movie that made Steven Spielberg a big-budget name, that it's so quotable, and that it does a lot in the way of special effects for the time period. It's no wonder it has a 97% rating and people are still talking about it years later.

Liam Neeson in Schindler's List

Schindler's List

While not a movie you'd probably want to throw on while folding laundry or doing other background tasks, Schindler's List has held up for years thanks to its stark and emotional story about a man who risked all to save Jewish individuals during the Holocaust. There's a reason it won Best Picture in 1997 and there's a reason critics are still giving it a 98% score years later, but it's one you should revisit only when you have tissues readily available.

Screenshot Of Steve Martin Looking Stressed in the Planes, Trains And Automobiles Trailer

Planes, Trains And Automobiles

A slew of Steve Martin and John Candy movies are beloved years later. But their team-up in Planes, Trains and Automobiles is even more momentous thanks to its fun road trip premise and the presence of both famous comedians, not to mention a brilliant directing effort from '80s movies staple John Hughes. It's landed a 92% rating with critics and is still a perfect movie to revisit every few years.

Christopher Lloyd on the clock in Back to the Future still from time travel scene.

Back To The Future

The '80s were a time of great comedies and angsty teen movies, but if you are looking for a little bit of both of those things, Back to the Future is a great time. Launching Michael J. Fox's career on the big screen in 1985 (after a successful run on Family Ties ), Back to the Future 's time travel hijinks and fun premise have kept it relevant for a long time. It's easily a go-to as a rewatch for many movie lovers and it's landed a 93% from critics.

Miles falling into the Spider-Verse

Spiderman: Across The Spider-Verse

Both an animated and family-friendly film, Spiderman: Across the Spider-verse not only has a killer premise, it also appeals to a wide swathe of audiences in different age groups. It's one of the best superhero movies to revisit, and it's a movie that's smart enough to be watched and discussed in-depth but is also exactly the type of movie you can throw on while your kids are multi-tasking with toys. And critics love it, as it has a 95% critics rating -- and a similar audience rating to boot!

Michael B. Jordan outside of the ring in 2015's Creed.

I know, I know, Rocky 's more the classic movie and also has a strong Rotten Tomatoes score, but for many the go-to movie in the franchise is 2015's Creed . It's a film that made Michael B. Jordan even more of a household name and stands up as a solidly grounded movie. Plus, it has wonderful performances and pays respect to what came before. What not to like? At least 95% of critics feel the same way.

The Origin of Evil Trailer #1 (2023) - YouTube

RT score:  92% Director:  Sebastien Marnier Runtime:  123 minutes Age rating:  R Arriving on:  June 1

The Origin of Evil is best described as a thriller that meets French cinema. In it, Stéphane (Laure Calamy) reaches out to Serge (Jacques Weber), a rich business who she claims to be her father. Her sudden announcement doesn't sit well with his family, but she stops at nothing to get to know him and become part of the family circle. Upon her visit to his mansion, she is faced with the other women in his life, including his wife (Dominique Blanc) and his other daughter (Doria Tiller), who aren't convinced by Stéphane's claims, but they don't know that she's a cunning liar who has more than just a few secrets up her sleeve.

13 Assassins [2010] Official Trailer - YouTube

RT score:  95% Director:  Takashi Miike Runtime:  126 minutes Age rating:  R Arriving on:  July 8

On rare occasions do we se movie remakes score higher than their original material, but in the case of 13 Assassins it's 2011 remake was a smash hit on Rotten Tomatoes compared to the 1963 movie's score of 64%. Set in 19th-century Japan and based on historical events, Shinzaemon Shimada assumes the role as leader of a team of assassins. The team sets out to conquer Lord Naritsugu Matsudaira and stop him from terrorising his own people, setting traps for the lord's bodyguards with the help of one of the best samurais in the country.
