Receipt of an application fee waiver does not guarantee admission to a PhD program. If you do not receive a fee waiver, but are admitted to the chemistry or biochemistry PhD program and join the program, the application fee will be reimbursed at the beginning of the first semester.

This fee waiver request is only available to applicants of the Chemistry or Biochemistry PhD programs. Applicants for MS degrees are not eligible.

Is the GRE required?

No, the GRE is not required. The committee will not factor in GRE scores sent to ASU.

Do I have to pay the application fee?

Yes. The application fee is paid with the general graduate application. The fee is $70 for domestic students and $115 for international students. The application fee will be refunded to all students who are admitted and choose to join our program. This fee is set by the University and is out of our control.

If I send my application information in an email, can I receive a pre-evaluation to see if I am eligible to apply?

We receive many inquiries and applications; therefore, we are not able to preview your scores to determine your eligibility to apply or make suggestions on your credentials.

I missed the deadline for application. Can I still apply?

Applications received after the Jan. 1 deadline may be reviewed and considered for admission if space permits; however, the applicant may not be eligible for special scholarships or fellowships and domestic students may miss an opportunity to attend our Visitation Weekend. International students must consider important dates for the issuance of immigration documents. Applications are only accepted for the fall semester. We do not admit students to begin study in the spring semester.

Do all supporting documents need to be submitted by the deadline date?

Supporting documents may be submitted after the deadline; however, preference is given to applicants whose files are complete by the application due date. Submission of documents after the deadline may exclude your application from eligibility for special scholarships or fellowships and domestic students may miss an opportunity to attend our Visitation Weekend.

Is a master's degree required for applying to the PhD program?

Students applying to the PhD programs must have completed a Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry, biochemistry, or a related discipline by the semester in which they want to begin their graduate program. A Master’s degree is not required, with one exception. Due to differences in the educational system in India, applicants who have received their degree from an institution in India must have also completed a Master's degree. (4-year degrees, usually Biotechnology degrees, from India are considered equivalent to a 4-year BS degree and do not require an accompanying Master’s degree.)

Why can't I access the departmental supplemental application page?

You will need an ASURITE ID from Graduate Admission Services before you can access this page. Graduate Admission Services will not send your ASURITE ID until you have completed and submitted the general application, i.e. you must click the "submit" button at the end of their application. Please also make sure that the email containing your ASURITE ID has not been caught in your SPAM filter.

If you have received your ASURITE ID and you still cannot access the application, please wait 1-2 days to allow for our supplemental application database to sync with the Graduate Admission Services database (due to the schedule, this can take up to 48 hours). If after 48 hours you still cannot access the application, please check your MyASU to confirm that you have an application on file. If when accessing the application you encounter a page requesting that you log out, please follow the log out instructions, close your internet browser, and then try the link again. You may also need to log out of MyASU directly, since many browsers allow for MyASU to remain logged in, which can cause an authentication time-out error for the supplemental application. After logging out of MyASU, close your browser and then attempt to access the supplemental application again.

How many students will you admit this year?

Our recent incoming classes have ranged from 30-40 students, selected from ca. 450 applicants. The class size for any given year will be determined by faculty demand for new students.

Do I need to send official transcripts to both graduate college and the department?

Applicants are asked to submit an electronic copy of their unofficial transcripts as part of the Supplemental Application to the School of Molecular Sciences. SMS will use the unofficial transcripts for their review. Official transcripts must be sent to Graduate Admission Services for evaluation for you to be eligible for admission. Please do not mail your official transcript or any documents to the School of Molecular Sciences.

Where do I send official documents?

If sending by U.S. Mail, use this address:

Admission Services Applicant Processing Arizona State University PO Box 871004 Tempe AZ 85287-1004

If sending by FedEx, DHL or UPS, use this address:

Arizona State University Admission Services Applicant Processing 1150 East University Drive Building C, Room 226 Tempe, AZ 85281

Do not mail any documents, including official transcripts or copies of test scores to the School of Molecular Sciences.

Where can I find the form for recommendation letters?

There is no form for recommendation letters; they are submitted electronically. Within the Supplemental Application you will provide email addresses for your recommendation writers and an email will be sent to each recommender with instructions on how to submit a letter in support of your application. We can only accept letters of recommendation that are submitted electronically using our system.

Which professors are actively recruiting students? Should I contact individual professors about their research group?

Professors' group requirements change constantly and we are not able to provide a list of actively recruiting faculty. However, all students, whichever professor they eventually work for, must first apply to and be accepted into the program. Individual professors do not make decisions regarding admissions and should not be contacted with admission inquiries. Professors will often discuss research projects by email with enthusiastic applicants.

What kind of financial support is available through the department?

All students accepted into the PhD Chemistry/Biochemistry programs are offered financial support by means of a Graduate Assistant position.

Students are welcome and encouraged to apply for fellowships available through the Graduate College or federal agencies (i.e. NSF, NIH, DOE, etc.) to supplement or substitute for the standard funding, which can often allow for additional focus on research and a reduction in the time required to complete the degree.

Is there a special form to complete for financial support via a graduate assistantship?

There is no additional paperwork to complete for a Graduate Assistantship.

I am an international student, when should I submit the financial guarantee form?

The Financial Guarantee form should be submitted only if you are accepted to a graduate program. Graduate Admission Services will send information on completing this form with their official admissions notification. Information on how to complete this form will also be included with the official offer letter.

How can I check the status of my application?

Your application status can be checked in two places:

For your general application, please check your MyASU portal, specifically your Priority Tasks panel for any required items that need to be submitted. If your application status is “In Review” your official application is complete and nothing further is required for the official application.

For the Supplemental Application, please log in and click the "Check Documents Status" bar at the top of the application. All information that has been submitted is live and can be seen by the committee, there is no final submit button.

When will a decision be made on my application?

The School of Molecular Sciences Admissions Committee will begin their review of applications close to the deadline. The number of applications received in the past few years has averaged over 450 per year; therefore, it may take up to 6 weeks before notices are sent. The Admissions Committee appreciates your patience while they carefully review each applicant's qualification for our graduate programs. Every effort will be made to provide final decisions by March 15.

Information on the Graduate Admission Services application can be found on their website or you can contact them by email or by calling 480-965-6113. Additional information can be found on their Contact page.

Application Information

Admission Metrics While we employ holistic admission criteria, which consider diversity, life and research experience, programmatic needs and overlap with faculty research interests, you must be adequately prepared for graduate study in physics. A strong indicator of this preparation is your performance in upper division (third and fourth year) physics coursework. Successful applicants should have performed at the 'A' or 'B' level in their upper division physics coursework. Additionally, the disparity in the number of applications to the different research emphases offered by our PhD program requires us to be more selective for admission of our applicants with interests in certain sub-disciplines. I’m an international applicant and I’m having trouble with receiving or submitting documents for the I-20? What should I do?

All information regarding the I-20 (how to request, what is needed, and tracking the status) may be found in the student’s MyASU student account. The Graduate College produces the I-20. If the student has questions that are unable to be answered through the MyASU student account or through a search on their website, ( http://graduate.asu.edu ), the student should contact Graduate College directly at 1-480-965-6113 or by email: [email protected] .

If I send my application information in an email, can I receive a pre-evaluation to see if I’m eligible to apply?

No. We do not have the resources to pre-screen applications.  We cannot formulate an admission decision without an official application on file. All application materials must be received before a final decision is made.

Do I need to submit official transcripts as part of my application?

Unofficial transcripts of your college and/or university work are sufficient for review purposes as long as they are clearly labeled with the institution name and indicate the date(s) that degrees were awarded.  You cannot be officially admitted into our PhD program until official transcripts of your college and/or university work are received by our admissions office

ASU Acceptance Rate, Ranking, & Tuition (2024)

May 27, 2024

Arizona State University (ASU) is a public research university founded in 1886 (nearly 30 years before Arizona was granted statehood). ASU is one of the largest public universities in the United States , with more than 145,000 undergraduate and graduate students from all 50 states and more than 150 countries. Are you interested in applying to Arizona State University? In this article, we will discuss the ASU acceptance rate, ranking, notable alumni, and tuition costs. First, though, let’s dive into a general overview of ASU.

ASU Overview

Although the size of ASU can be overwhelming, the flip side is that there are opportunities and support systems for nearly every type of student. ASU is popular among to first-generation undergraduates, who make up approximately 33% of the student body, and students who identify as minorities (about 48% of the undergraduate class of 2027). Likewise, around 85% of ASU undergraduate students receive some level of financial assistance and around  33% receive Pell grants.

Led by over 5,000 faculty members, ASU offers more than 400 academic undergraduate programs , and more than 450 graduate degree programs and certificates. Offerings include accelerated programs, concurrent degrees, joint programs, and online options. Despite its large size, the student-faculty ratio at ASU is 19:1, and around 39% of its classes have fewer than 20 students. The most popular majors include:

  • Business, Management, Marketing, and Related Support Services
  • Engineering
  • Biological and Biomedical Sciences
  • Health Professions and Related Programs
  • Computer and Information Sciences and Support Services
  • Social Sciences
  • Communication, Journalism, and Related Programs
  • Visual and Performing Arts

ASU Acceptance Rate, Ranking, & Tuition (Continued)

In addition, ASU offers extensive extracurricular opportunities—with more than 1,000 student clubs and organizations. The study-abroad program is also robust, with more than 300 programs in 65 different countries.

For fans of college sports, the NCAA Division I Sun Devils have earned more than 270 national and conference titles.

Where is ASU?

Arizona State advertises itself as “one university in many places,” and is spread out across five campuses throughout the Phoenix Metro Area, mostly connected through public transit—including light rail:

  • The urban Downtown Phoenix campus houses programs in health care, law, government, nonprofit and public social service, arts and sciences, journalism, media, and the corporate sector.
  • The Polytechnic campus is hub for the interdisciplinary sciences, engineering, management, technology, and education.
  • The historic Tempe campus houses hundreds of undergraduate and graduate majors, and is home to the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, the Herbeger Institute for Design and the Arts, the School for the Future of Innovation in Society, and the School of Sustainability (Fun Fact: the Tempe campus is the most solar-powered of any in the United States). The Tempe campus is quite picturesque, with eclectic architecture and vibrant landscaping. The campus also houses the Sun Devil Stadium and ASU’s other Pac-12 athletic venues.
  • The West Valley campus offers over 125 undergraduate and graduate degree programs, including those in forensics, business, engineering, education, and honors curriculum. The West Valley campus also provides programming for local K-12 students.
  • At ASU at Lake Havasu , students participate in four-year undergraduate degree programs in high-demand career fields such as psychology, criminal justice, and health and environmental sciences. As the newest ASU campus, ASU at Lake Havasu was founded in 2012 to bring higher education to a location unserved by the state university system. Students at the Lake Havasu campus pay lower tuition and enjoy a low student-to-faculty ratio.

Overall, the Phoenix Metro Area has much to offer for students at all campuses. Phoenix is the fifth-largest city in the country, and is home to ten Fortune companies and all five of Arizona’s professional sports teams. Outdoor destinations, such as Sedona, are just a short jaunt away.

Since ASU is made up several campuses and locations—each with its own amenities, academic areas of focus, and size—the website offers a “Campus Fit” quiz to help potential students determine what type of college experience (and which associated campus) is best for them. The quiz asks about academic goals, preferred learning styles, and living preferences.

ASU Mission

ASU bills itself as “A New American University,” exemplifying a new prototype for the American public research university.

The ASU charter reads:

ASU is a comprehensive public research university, measured not by whom it excludes, but by whom it includes and how they succeed; advancing research and discovery of public value; and assuming fundamental responsibility for the economic, social, cultural and overall health of the communities it serves.

Arizona State University aims to:

  • Demonstrate leadership in enabling academic excellence and accessibility at scale
  • Establish national standing in academic quality and impact of colleges and schools in every field
  • Expand ASU’s role as the leading global center for interdisciplinary research, discovery and development by 2029
  • Enhance our local impact and social embeddedness
  • Design and launch ASU Health as a comprehensive cluster of teaching, learning and discovery health systems for the enhancement of social-scale health outcomes

ASU Academic Calendar

ASU utilizes a semester-based academic calendar. The fall semester begins in late August and goes through mid-December. The spring semester begins in mid-January and concludes mid-May. ASU also offers summer courses.

Arizona State University – ASU Acceptance Rate

ASU has a fairly high acceptance rate of around 90%, and combines the high acceptance rate with a high first-year students retention rate of 85%. In the fall of 2023, ASU welcomed 14,102 incoming first-year students, with 8,992 (or 54%) of those students hailing from Arizona.

ASU offers rolling admissions and accepts either ASU’s Application for Admission or the Common App . In general, to be admitted to ASU, students need to achieve one of the following:

  • A spot in the top 25% of their high school graduating class
  • A 3.00 GPA in competency courses
  • An ACT score of 22 for Arizona residents or 24 for non-Arizona residents
  • An SAT score of 1120 for Arizona residents or 1180 for non-Arizona residents

That said, some degree programs have higher aptitude requirements. Potential students are encouraged to research the requirements for any programs in which they are interested prior to applying.

Overall, two-thirds of admitted first-year students in the fall of 2023 reported unweighted GPAs of 3.47 or above. About 50% of the applicants admitted to ASU who opted to submit test scores had an SAT score between 1120-1370 or an ACT score between 19-27. Note that ASU does not require ACT or SAT scores for admission , but test scores can be a way for potential students to demonstrate that they’ve met the competency requirements.

ASU Ranking

According to the US News & World Report, Arizona State University ranks #105 in National Universities, #51 in Top Public Schools, #16 in First-Year Experiences, and—most impressively–#1 in “Most Innovative” Schools. ASU also boasts some impressive subject rankings, coming in at #34 for Best Undergraduate Engineering Programs and #58 in Economics.

ASU also receives consistent recognition for its affordability and overall value. For example, College Transitions lists ASU among 200 Schools “Worth Your Money” for 2025 and the 2023 edition of the Fiske Guide to Colleges lists ASU as a “Top Ten Best Buy” public university in the United States.

For students concerned with sustainability, ASU is ranked #1 in the United States and #2 in the world by the Sustainability Tracking, Assessment & Rating System . Times Higher Education recognizes ASU as one of only two U.S. universities to achieve net zero emissions .

Finally, ASU enjoys a strong international reputation. In 2023, ASU was named the # 1 Public University for hosting international students in the 2023 Institute of International Education’s Open Doors Report—a position it has claimed for six of the past eight years.

ASU Tuition

First-year ASU students pay for tuition and mandatory fees, on-campus housing, and meals. Books and supplies, transportation, and personal expenses vary but should also be factored into one’s projected college expenses. At Arizona State, tuition varies by program and campus location, but the average in-state resident tuition for 2023-2024 was $13,161 and the average for out-of-state students was $34,103.

ASU does offer many scholarships and financial aid opportunities which can significantly lower costs, and around 65% of first-year students receive merit scholarships. In fact, the average net tuition Arizona residents pay after gift aid, work-study, and on-campus employment is just $3,866 a year. Moreover, some Arizona residents qualify for tuition-free programs, including the Arizona Promise Program and the President Barack Obama Scholar Program . Nonresidents have options for financial aid as well, and are eligible for the New American University’s President’s and Provost’s Awards , as well as Academic Achievement, University, and Dean’s Awards .

Finally, it is worth noting that ASU participates in the Western Undergraduate Exchange (WUE) program in which residents of Western states (other than Arizona) may be eligible for reduced out-of-state tuition (about 150% of in-state tuition). WUE-eligible students hail from Alaska, California, Colorado, Guam, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oregon, South Dakota, Utah, Washington, Wyoming, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, or American Samoa. WUE tuition averages around $19,615 a year.

To help students anticipate costs, ASU provides a tuition calculator which calculates costs based on academic year, residency status, student status, campus location, college, and academic program.

ASU Notable Alumni

ASU’s list of notable alumni is extensive, and includes athletes, government leaders, founders of companies, entertainers, and more. Examples include:

  • Barbara Barrett, former US Ambassador to Finland
  • Mary Temple Grandin, Autism spokesperson and author
  • James Harden, basketball star
  • Jimmy Kimmel, late-night TV host
  • Ruth McGregor, former chief justice of the Arizona Supreme Court
  • Phil Mickelson, professional golfer
  • Peterson Zah, First Navajo Nation president

Randall langston, student access and success drives uno’s new enrollment vp.

Randall Langston is the University of New Orleans’ new vice president for enrollment management.

Randall Langston, the University of New Orleans’ new vice president for enrollment management, wants to help “demystify” the collegiate journey for students by providing academic support that begins prior to admission and extends beyond graduation.

“A big part of what I see myself and enrollment management doing is helping clear obstacles for students, whether it be financial or emotional,” Langston said. “We have to look at ways to be able to promote student success. Student success is at the core of everything we do.”

Langston, who arrived on campus in early May, is just a few weeks into his stint of leading the new re-envisioned Division of Enrollment Management, which includes Admissions, Financial Aid and Scholarships, Registrar, and Veterans Services.

He comes to UNO with 25 years of experience as a senior enrollment management leader, predominantly at public institutions, with a record of increasing enrollment, leveraging financial aid and developing staff. Langston has previously served as senior associate vice president for enrollment management at the University of Southern Mississippi, executive vice provost for enrollment management at the University of Central Missouri and vice president for enrollment management at Texas Woman’s University. He has also worked as a consultant, providing guidance and planning in strategic enrollment management to colleges and universities.

Langston, who grew up in southwest Houston and attended Sam Houston State University as an undergraduate, earned a bachelor’s degree in political science. He thought law school was his next step but felt drawn to academia.

He always had a proclivity for mathematics, and a friend suggested that Langston explore a career in college admissions, he said.

“I was able to blend both of what my passions were: student success and then also the ability to integrate empirical mathematics,” Langston said about his work in admissions.

What attracted him to academia and specifically enrollment management is having the chance to make a difference in young people’s lives, Langston said.

“That means opening doors for students,” he said. “I believe that college opens doors and provides access for students. I don’t think there is anything more important than gaining an education and then being able to go into the world and work.”

The other attraction, Langston said, is being able to help students navigate the sometimes-unfamiliar collegiate terrain. He calls it “deciphering and demystifying.”

“I fully subscribe to the ‘It takes a village’ approach,” Langston said. “It’s everyone working in tandem to impact students in a positive way and help them matriculate and, ultimately, graduate from the university.”

With student success as a driving principle, Langston says his overall enrollment management strategy involves:

  • Collaboration, communication and partnership between enrollment management and campus constituencies
  • The use of data driven/data informed strategies
  • Initiatives that promote inclusive excellence and belonging
  • Comprehensive marketing strategies which promote institutional visibility for prospective students and other external audiences

“We are dealing with a lot of headwinds at this point, everything from lower birthrates to inflation to the enrollment cliff,” Langston said. “Our strength is all of us coming together, supporting one another collaboratively and in partnership to do the important work for the students we serve.”

Langston sees enrollment management as a circle. It begins with gaining the interest of prospective students—possibly as early as their sophomore year in high school—and then shepherding them through to graduation and becoming involved alumni.

“It’s a life cycle and in order to be successful, we have to eliminate silos, come together to support one another and market and promote the institution aggressively,” Langston said. “I think that UNO has a great story to tell, and I want people to know just how great a place this is to be.”
