Co-education is a system of educating boys and girls together. In ancient times, co-education existed in Sparta in Greece. There was no discrimination between boys and girls. They studied and played together. Along with academic education, physical training was also given to both sexes.

Plato, the Greek philosopher, believed that co-education helped in the development of personality of both men and women and created a feeling of comradeship among them. In the west, the importance of co-education has been felt since ancient times.

In early Vedic Society, co-education was prevalent in a few places. But gradually female education began to be ignored. Moreover, the system of education was quite different from that of today. The boys stayed in Gurukuls, for the whole educational period. There they received both academic education and physical training. The former included the study of the scriptures and the latter, training in warfare. Girls were not sent to the Gurukuls and thus were deprived of the benefits of education.

In medieval India, those belonging to lower castes and the womenfolk were not allowed to attend schools or study the scriptures. Raja Rammohan Roy, a great social reformer and scholar, fought against this practice and succeeded in his mission. His job was further carried on by other social reformers.

Today co-education is prevalent in almost all the countries of the world. In India, there are a number of co-educational schools, colleges, and universities. There are a number of advantages to the co-educational system of education. It is economical. Poor countries cannot afford to open separate schools for boys and girls are taught together in the same school, then there is no need open separate schools for them. Thus the cost to be incurred on building infrastructure furniture, stationery, personnel recruitment, etc. will be saved.

There is a shortage of well-trained teachers in developing countries like India. if there is co-education, the same staff can teach both boys and girls at the same time in the same class, and the problem of teacher shortage can be dealt with Establishing more of co-educational schools can help in spreading literacy even with the limited teaching staff and infrastructure. A study has revealed that co-educational schools are better because the presence of girls in classes restrains boys from indulging in unruly behavior and improves their academic performance. In fact, a higher percentage of girls not only lowers the amount of classroom disruption but also fosters a better relationship between students and their teachers. The researchers for and that classes with more than 55 percent of girls resulted in better examination results and less violent outbursts overall. They conclude that this effect is due to the positive influence the girls have on the classroom environment.

In fact, the study found that primary school classrooms with a female majority showed increased academic success for both boys and girls. In the middle and high schools, the classrooms which had the best academic achievements overall were consistently those that had a higher proportion of girls enrolled. The researchers suggest that boys and girls may learn differently, but it is better not to send them to sex-segregated schools.

Boys become conscious of their dressing habits, behavior, and the style of communication in the company of girls. They dress properly, behave well, and talking a decent language. Girls, similarly, overcome their shyness, behave well with boys, and understand them better.

Co-education generates a spirit of healthy competition among boys and girls. They work hard to remain ahead of one another. Co-education reduces gender bias in the society. It generates a feeling of equality between both sexes. The feeling of male dominance may be wiped out from the society if this system of education is given importance.

However, some people are opposed to the system of co-education. According to them, this system is against the Indian culture and tradition. It is also argued that girls feel freer in an institution which is meant only for girls. As such they have a greater scope of developing their personality. They also participate in sports, dramatics, and debates more freely.

Teachers of some subjects like Biology also find it easier to explain some chapters more thoroughly if only girls or boys are sitting in the class. Sex education has also been introduced and in co-educational schools, even teachers find it difficult to discuss such topics in the class.

It is also felt that since students are of impressionable age, the possibility of their going astray is much more in co-educational institutions, where they enjoy more freedom of intermingling with the other sex. They also may not remain focused on their studies.

It should be acknowledged that in the fast-changing society of the twenty-first century co-education has to become the order of the day. Today girls are entering all professions in large numbers. Many of them are heading bug organization. Co-education will help young boys and girls to mix freely and understand one another better. Today’s children are tomorrow’s citizens. We must encourage them to develop their personality in a free and healthy atmosphere. Girls no more have to remain confined to the four walls of the house. Secondly, there is a shortage of trained teachers in India. If the same staff teaches boys and girls together, we can manage with the existing staff of teachers.

Thirdly, if boys and girls study in separate schools, they will grow up in watertight compartments. The result will be that girls will feel shy in the presence of boys. Boys will have curiosity about girls. Co-education helps the boys and girls to inter- mingle and understand each other well. It leads to the harmonious relationship  between boys and girls

Fourthly, co-education generates healthy competition between boys and girls. Both boys and girls. Both boys and girls work hard to remain ahead of each other in studies and sports.

Fifthly, co-education creates a feeling of comradeship between boys and girls. As the boys are free to meet and talk to the girls, they do not indulge in eve-teasing. Girls too do not feel shy in the presence of boys. The system co-education is thus very conducive to the balanced development of the personality of boys and girls.

However, there are some conservative people who are opposed to the system of co-education.  They point out that this system is against our tradition and culture. They approached that if boys and girls study together, the possibility of their developing immoral relationship cannot be ruled out. They also felt that the system of co-education may spoil the character of boys and girls.

But these arguments are not very convincing and do not hold well in modern times. If our experience is any guide, boys dress properly and behave well in the company of girls. They use dignified language. By nature, boys are curious about girls if they study with girls, their curiosity will be satisfied. They will not regard girls as strange creatures. Likewise, if girls are taught with boys, they will not feel shy. They will understand boys better.

Thus, we can say that the advantages of the system of co-education outweigh the disadvantages. Since the boys and the girls have to, later on, live together as husband and wife, there is no point in segregating them in schools or colleges. We should move with the times and open more and more coeducational institutions in India. The hackneyed morality of the medieval ages should not be allowed to stand in the way of the progress of our youth who are the future citizens of India.

This policy is now, by and large, being followed in our country. There is, however, co-education again at the post-graduation level.

Some people believe that co-education should not be there. In their opinion, this can lead to attraction between boys and girls which is neither good for their health, nor character, nor studies.

Some other people are of the view that co-education can bring about a healthy competition between boys and girls and thus it can be of mutual benefit to both sexes. It can mean better discipline since in the presence of girls the boys will not talk irrelevantly or obscenely in the class.

The most potent argument advanced by co-education lovers is that it can help both boys and girls in the development of their personalities. They can come out of their enclosed shell-like personality and get rid of their unwarranted hesitation and shyness.

This can make boys and girls more expressive, progressive, and forward in outlook and attitude to life which can be of great advantage to both sexes.

It must, however, be noted that some reservations are also there and even in a country like England, exclusive schools for girls are now being set up.

Hence, coeducation is the answer, especially in respect of higher, professional, and specialized courses e.g. post-graduation, medical, engineering, aviation, business management, fashion designing, and such.

The economic benefits gained from joint classes and the need to secure equality for women in industrial, professional, and political activities have greatly influenced the spread of coeducation. There were scattered examples of coeducation in the 18th century even in developed western countries. The advent of coeducation in the 19th century is indeed an important development. In most countries, coeducation is now favoured over single-sex education, although there is some evidence to suggest that girls perform better in a single-sex institution up to high-school and intermediate(or secondary) levels for which facilities do exist in towns and cities of India. There has been a great upsurge in women’s education, in general, and coeducation in particular in post-independence India.

On the international scene, coeducation has expanded since World War II. In the USA, UK, France, etc 90% of the schools and colleges are coeducational. In 1954, the then USSR returned to its earlier coeducational system which was partly abolished in 1944. In Islamic countries, coeducation is discouraged beyond the infant stage on religious principles.

There are protagonists as well as opponents of education. The opponents do so chiefly on grounds viz. religious, cultural, or possible harm to a girl’s dignity or womanhood. The proponents of coeducation explain how God created humankind. Humans, males, and females work together to survive and exist. They require each other’s existence and support to succeed. For students to succeed, they require coeducation: Many times it happens that single-sex education of females leads to loss of ability to compete academically or socially with males. Coeducation and daily academic competition with males can change females’ attitudes and inculcate self-confidence. Young adults must be conditioned to deal with natural distractions because of sex differences, and what is right and what is wrong at an early age so that when they encounter them later in life, they are able to effectively deal with them. Males and females can learn from each other by pooling their talents.

Coeducation facilitates a microcosm of the real world where social skills can be learnt. A coeducational school helps females to acquire socialization skills that will help them in further schooling and an eventual job in the workforce. Another opinion is that the co-educational schools are better as the presence of girls controls boys – from indulging in unruly behaviour, classroom disruption end improves academic performance.

There are pros and cons to everything, and yes, coeducation too has its positives and negatives. The girls too, in order to super cede the boys devote a great deal of time in studies which they would in all probability spend otherwise, whiling away their time in idle work. Hence co-education provides the atmosphere for healthy competition.

The end result of co-education is a more mature, more level-headed better adult. Co-education makes the girls bold and fearless. They are thus better able to face the male-dominated society and can fight for their rightful place in society single-handedly. On the whole, co-education is essential for a progressive society where men and women must co-operate to build a better world.

Co-education has shown that if girls and boys are nurtured together in schools and colleges, they can talk and exchange ideas freely without barriers and accept each other as human beings.

We have to provide her educational facilities equal with man. We have not enough women’s colleges to accommodate all the female aspirants after higher education nor does our present budget allow us to open separate women’s colleges. Girls, therefore, must join co-educational institutions if they are not to be left behind in the race for progress. Girls also prefer to join co-educational institutions not for the sake of romance and sight-seeing but because they are better staffed and better equipped. The staff in a purely women’s institution is seldom stable for as soon as a woman lecturer is married, she resigns and goes away to the station of her husband. The education of the girl scholars thus suffers in consequence.

Our orthodox brethren assert that free mixing of boys and girls would lead to romance and love marriages which usually have an unhappy ending. Such fears are unfounded and base-less. In a coeducational institution, boys and girls try to behave better in the presence of others. The college life becomes sweet and charming and attendance also improves. Men and women mix freely in trains, buses, cinemas, places of worship, in the family and fairs. Heavens won’t fall if they mix in colleges. When there is a larger number of girls in a college, they don’t attract attention. The novelty is worn off. Familiarity blunts the edge of curiosity and makes the whole thing look common. Co-education improves the moral tone of the students.

There is also distinct improvement in the university results, since co-education brings about healthy rivalry. The cost of education to the State is reduced. The same staff, the same building and furniture, can satisfy the educational needs of both the sexes. In a coeducational institution, boys and girls mix freely at the debates, in associations, clubs and societies attached to the institution and thus have ample opportunities of understanding one another’s viewpoint. Co-education is not a new thing for us. In the good old days, co-education was in practice. There are many examples which show that co-education was all over the country in the days.

From the very beginning, voices have been raised against co-education. Stephen Lealock, an American educationist declares, “Men cannot read when women are around”.

There are many changes against co-education. First, it lowers the tone of discipline. Secondly, it brings about a shift in the minds of students. Learning goes to the background and ‘sex attraction reigns supreme’. Thirdly, it creates a love of fashion and extravagance. Fourthly, girls sometimes run with the teachers.

The Chief argument in favour of co-education is the economy. It would be foolish indeed to have two institutions at a place where the only one will do. A poor country like India which needs education of women more than any other country cannot afford to have two institutions at one place. The other argument is that co-education creates better understanding between young men and young women. After all they have to live together in life. Then why is this unnatural separation of sexes in our schools and colleges? The reasoning is sound.

It was established in 1714 in Surrey (now in South London). During the Middle Ages in Europe, co-education was rare, and most education took place in monastic and religious institutions. Co-education became more prevalent in universities and colleges during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The fight for women’s right and increased gender equality further promoted co-education. By the mid-20th century, co- education became common in primary and secondary school around the world including India.

While co-education is widely accepted, debates continue about the best practices for fostering equality and inclusivity in educational settings. Co-education is an important step towards promoting gender equality in education and society.

Co–education in India has been present since ancient times in the form of the Gurukul system of education, where students of all genders received education in the same place under the guidance of a guru or teacher. During British colonial rule, gender-based education became more common, with separate schools for boys and girls. This separation was mainly due to social norms prevalent at that time. After India gained independence in 1947, co-education started to regain popularity. The Indian government promoted co-education as a means to promote gender equality and social integration. In India majority of the colleges and university departments are now co­educational. While co-education is widely practiced, disparities in educational opportunities and outcomes still exist in certain parts of India, particularly in rural areas. After the enactment of the Right to Education Act in 2009 it was made compulsory for educational institutions to provide equal opportunities to students of all genders.

The supporter of Co-education basically favor the Co-Education system for two factors i.e. Sociological and Economical factor. The various benefits of co-education are described as follows:

• The students get exposed to diversity at a young age, so they find it easier to adapt to diverse environments which reduces gender biases.
• It promotes co-existence by promoting social and communication skills.

• It help in developing mutual respect for each other and the holistic development of a student’s personality.

• It reduces the burden on the government to provide resources and infrastructure to the state with more school. So it is a cost effective method.

• It can result in unequal participation and opportunities for students of the opposite sex as some courses or activities may be dominated by one gender.
• Safety of the girl student is of major concern in the co-educational institutions. Cases of sexual assault and harassement in these institution requires proper policies.
• Some cultural norms and beliefs are against co-education. They restrict their daughters to study in the co-educational institutions.
• Some students feel shy and uncomforatble in co-learning environment for personal and cultural reasons.
• It can result in unhealthy competition between both genders, which may not form conducive environment for learning.
• It reduces the options for schools and colleges for the students of both genders.

Co-education provides both advantages and disadvantages. Adding coeducation into the educational system widely seen in the west. It then began to spread and now most of the countries in the world have accepted it.

Well, fortunately, India is no backward in this case and you can see coeducation being part of the educational system widely in India.

People get to know how to respect each other and their emotional level. You get to know each other’s strengths and weaknesses and develop the ability to accept them as they are.

Be it any country there will be a shortage of lecturers if there are separate institutions or centers for genders right from school to college. It might be very difficult to fill in, even if there would be a huge demand for teachers.

It also breeds monetary loss to the government or a private institution when they invest a huge amount for separate lecturers teaching the same thing to students across institutions. Hence, the co-education system has the advantage of proper resource handling.

When both genders are put up in the same environment, there are more possibilities of following good ethics, disciplined use of language, and proper dressing, etc.

Disadvantages of Co-Education system:

Though there are many advantages of having a co-education system, our society still puts forward a few inhibitions which do not accept the concept. Mentioned here are few disadvantages or bad effects of co-education. They are,

1. Chances of distractions could be more:

Teenage is a very dangerous phase in anybody’s life. It is very common among teens to undergo psychological changes when they are in the company of the other gender and feel attracted to them.

And especially, where they are in a process of defining their career path, it could cause a lot of distractions and might disturb their knowledge gain period.

Hence, parents often wonder if co-education institutions would be the right choice for their kin to learn or whether they should avoid the co-education system.

2. Unethical activities:

Crimes have become common when both genders are put up in the same educational environment.

There might be a lot of characteristic changes among boys and girls. When they mismatch, some ferocious kids tend to commit various harassments, physical toughness, and emotional stress to people around them.

The weaker lot can suffer at the hands of the opposite sex pushing them into depression and other psychological problems . Hence, people hesitate to support the co-education system to ensure that their kids are in a safe environment and this is especially for the girls.

3. More involvement in personal feelings:

Both genders come from different schools of thought and hence contradiction of thoughts is common among boys and girls. If the arguments are not handled in a proper behavior then it can sometimes lead to unwanted arguments and might divert from their studies.

It can lead to a lot of complaints and parents making the rounds at the school for improper behavior from their kin. This will also make the teachers get troubled a lot because of their behavior and an irritated teacher can never give their 100% towards teaching.

This is what worries any parent when they come to know that the issues in the school are costing his or her kin’s studies and hence pushing them to select a convent rather than co-educational institutions.

Co-education in India (and its Advantages)

Co-education in India

Co- is a prefix that means together. Educate is a word that comes from educare. Educare means literally to draw out, but it tends to be used in the sense of to teach. Hence, co-education means teaching together.

Co-education (also mixed gender education, mixed-sex education, co-ed) refers to the integrated education system, where the education of both boys and girls are arranged in the same environment, mainly at schools, colleges and universities.

Co–education is one of the most common spectacles in the educational system of West. It is now been widely seen in India as well.

As a matter of historical fact, there was co-education in ancient India particularly in the Vedic Age, when woman had a very high status in the society.

In modern times, it means teaching students of all genders together, at various levels, such as:

At nursery school. At school. At university. However, with the passage of time, the system of co- education began to be discouraged in India. During the British rule, however, co-education once again cropped up, but only one out of one thousand Indian girls could get the privilege of studying with boys. Today, of course, co-education is encouraged in our country and number of co-educational institutions is increasing.

Critics: There are certain critics who are still holding the conservative view that by studying in co-educational institutions our girls become immodest and graceless and that their moral character also gets blotted. These critics are think that the decline of morality in the present age is the direct outcome of co-educational system. There is absolutely no truth in these false and baseless charges against co-education. Co-education neither corrupts a girl nor a boy. Educational institutions are the places of learning. Co-education doesn’t make students impure, unholy or immoral. When boys and girls can enjoy mixed social gatherings and parties, then where lies the harm if they study together?

Types of co-education.

In the home: boys and girls can be taught to read and write together by their parents. At nursery school: all students play and learn together. At primary school: boys and girls take the same classes. At university: university students of all genders learn together. On training courses or practical courses: no preference is given to one gender over another. Advantages of Co-education

1. Broadens Outlook and Personality: Co-education, apart from providing a better and higher standard of education, also serves as vital force in the development of a girl’s personality. It widens her narrow out-look and broadness her horizon. Modesty and grace are, indeed, two most important qualities in an ideal Indian girl.

2. Bold and smart: Co-education removes shyness from a girl and makes her bold and smart. It creates in the hearts of both the boys as well as girls, an inspiring urge to work together for the advancement and enrichment of the nation and the country. Boys and girls are the two ‘wheels’ of the Chariot of a nation. Both must play their parts equally and ideally to make the ‘Chariot’ run faster and still faster.

3. Respect: when educated together, all students learn respect for each other from an early age.

4. Best learning experience: co-education provides a great learning experience.

5. Psychological benefits: From the psychological point of view, co-education is a blessing for girls, especially of a less developed and growing country, like India, which is on her path of progress. When girls study with boys and take part in every activity side by side, they are psychologically cured of this disease of self-defeatism and self-created pessimism.

6. Lowers cost of education: When both girls and boys get education in a safe environment, the need for separate education institutions for girls would get minimized. Co-education is the proper solution to cut the high cost of maintaining separate staff and educational infrastructure for girls.

7. Gender Equality: Education should never be discriminated based on gender. Co-education enables the boys and girls to come in contact with each other. During this course, they are able to understand and develop respect for each other. This mutual understanding results in development of a social environment where both men and women are treated equally. Men will no longer oppose the equal status of women, once they are truly aware of the infinite potential of women.

8. Uniformity: Everyone gets to experience the same curriculum if they are all educated together. Every child gets the knowledge and wisdom to gain the best knowledge.

9. Social groups: Students’ social groups expand in co-educational environments. Co-education provides opportunity for co-operation (working together) and co-existence (existing together).

Conclusion: Boys and girls, both, will have to put effort and energy, toil and knowledge to re-build the shattered social and economic order of our country and the nation. Co-education is immensely beneficial to the girls of India, rather it is blessing to them. We should not discriminate against any student on any basis

According to Encyclopaedia Britanica, “In co-education boys and girls shall be taught the same courses at the same time, in the same place, by the same faculty with the same methods and under the same regime”. The later definition seems to be too rigid and does not take into consideration the differences of interests, tests, behaviour patterns and numerous character traits among boys and girls. In co-education boys and girls should mix together, study together and play together according to their varying interests and aptitudes.

Whatever may be the definition and meaning of co-education it is still a controversial topic in India as well as in other countries. There are divergent opinions on the problem. In the Ancient Hindu system, co-education was not at all in existence. But at present, co­education is very popular in India. The gradual development of women’s education shows that the need for the co-education is highly imperative if we have to promote literacy among women and have to provide them equality of opportunity in the real sense.

The women have to play a vital role in the reconstruction of the country. When women are taking leading part in politics and when they are becoming the Prime Ministers of the countries, the significance of the part to be played by them in a democratic set up of India can well be visualized by one and all. It is, therefore, essential that every girl of school going age must go either to a girls’ school or even a boys’ school if there is no special school for them in that area.

As far as the primary stage of education is concerned there should not be any controversy over co-education and boys and girls in the age group 6-11, may study together. Similarly at the university stage the students usually belong to the age group 18 and above and they are understanding enough to avert the misapprehensions of co-education. Moreover, in our country majority of the colleges and university departments are co­educational.

The National Committee on Women’s Education (1959) opined that at the middle and secondary stages more co­educational institutions should be established subject to the condition of adequate attention being paid to special needs and requirements of girls. Specially in rural areas separate secondary schools for girls should be provided. In India the number of separate women’s college is very few.

It also cheaper to have a single institution for both sexes. But at the secondary stage, co-education assumes all the seriousness of a problem. Budding adolescents showing all the signs of a nascent personality enter the portals of the high school in a state of malleability. Slightest irritation is likely to leave a deep imprint on the sensitive plate of their mind. Hence is the need for a careful handling and cautious bargaining with nature.

Boys and girls should be kept apart and treated as two separate entities. But Smt. Hans Mehta Committee on co-education (1962) recommended for the adoption of co-education as the general pattern at the elementary stage with a vigorous propaganda to overcome resistance to co-education. As a transitional measure, however, separate primary or middle schools might have to be provided in case of a large demand. The committee suggested for the appointment of male and female teachers in both boys and girls institutions.

Co-education, therefore, becomes a controversial issue at this level. Critics, educationists, psychologists, teachers and parents have put forth their arguments for and against co-education. They consider this problem from various angles i.e. Psychological, Administrative, Social and Economic. In view of the divergent social attitudes and from the consideration of efficiency, economic as well as equal opportunity, co-education should be adopted as the general policy at the primary level opined National Committee (1974).

At the middle and secondary stage separate schools may be provided in areas where there is a great demand for them. But side by side there should be effort to pursue co-education as a general policy at these stages. At the university level co-education should be the general policy and opening of new colleges exclusively for girls should be discouraged.

In ancient times, co-education was prevalent in Sparta, a city-state of Greece. Both boys and girls were given academic education and physical training together. There was no discrimination between the boys and the girls. They played and studied together.

Plato, the Greek philosopher, was also in favour of co-education. He believed that co-education helped in the development of personality of men and women and created a feeling of comradeship between them. He felt that co­education was the only method to make both men and women useful members of society. In ancient India also boys and girls were brought up and taught together. They were not segregated from each other.

Nowadays, the system of co-education is in vogue in U.S.A., Europe and other advanced countries of the world. In India also, a number of co-educational schools and colleges have been established.

There are a number of advantages in the co-educational system of education. Firstly, if boys and girls are taught together in the same school under the same roof, there will be no need to open separate schools for girls. A poor country like India cannot afford the luxury of opening separate schools for boys and girls. Co-education is thus economical.

Secondly, there is a shortage of trained teachers in India. If the same staff teaches boys and girls together, we can manage with the existing staff of teachers.

Thirdly, if boys and girls study in separate schools, they will grow up in watertight compartments. The result will be that girls will feel shy in the presence of boys. Boys will have curiosity about girls. Co-education helps the boys and girls to inter-mingle and understand each other well. It leads to harmonious relationship between boys and girls.

Fourthly, co-education generates healthy competition between boys and girls. Both boys and girls work hard to remain ahead of each other in studies and sports.

Fifthly, co-education creates a feeling of comradeship between boys and girls. As the boys are free to meet and talk to the girls, they do not indulge in eve-teasing. Girls too do not feel shy in the presence of boys. The system co-education is thus very conducive to the balanced development of the personality of boys and girls.

However, there are some conservative people who are opposed to system of co-education. They point out that this system is against our tradition and culture. They apprehend that if boys and girls study together, the possibility of their developing immoral relationship cannot be ruled out. They also felt that the system of co-education may spoil the character of boys and girls.

But these arguments are not very convincing and do not hold well in modern times. If our experience is any guide, boys dress properly and behave well in the company of girls. They use dignified language. By nature, boys are curious about girls. If they study with girls, their curiosity will be satisfied. They will not regard girls as strange creatures. Likewise, if girls are taught with boys, they will not feel shy. They will understand boys better.

Thus, we can say that the advantages of the system of co-education outweigh the disadvantages. Since the boys and the girls have to, later on, live together as husband and wife, there is no point in segregating them in schools or colleges. We should move with the times and open more and more co­educational institutions in India. The hackneyed morality of the medieval ages should not be allowed to stand in the way of the progress of our youth who are the future citizens of India.
