  REVIEW:

**A copy of this book was provided by the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.**

Mind games at it’s finest, You Will Be Mine by Natsha Preston is a psychological thriller for those not of the weak of heart or stomach.

You Will be Mine follows Lylah as she struggles with a past that is scary and debilitating, but is surrounded by friends and things that make her strive to be better and grow. Unfortunately not all is as it seems. The story touches on relationships and the struggle to maintain and build new ones when you’ve had negative ones or negative experiences in your past. It also touches on the importance of family, but also how it can sometimes feel overwhelming and you need to escape that hold to be independent. On top of all that, you get your gruesome, suspense-filled thriller packed with action.

This story never stopped. It was one crisis after another; one horrible scene after the next. While I couldn’t relate directly to things Lylah had been through, but I was still able to connect to her and the story. I was fully immersed and wanting to know what was happening next. Preston had a smooth writing style that kept the pages turning and never left dull moments. Lylah’s friend circle was a big point in this story. I found myself drawn more to some of the friends than Lylah herself. I felt they added a lot to the story. I spent the entire story thinking it was one person only to be proved completely wrong, which I loved.

Overall You Will be Mine was a fantastic read for anyone who enjoys mystery thrillers with a little love and family thrown in will love this. Plus it will play major psychological games on you! Pick it up. You won’t regret it.

You Will be Mine

you will be mine book review

As it gets closer to Valentine’s Day, the anniversary of Lylah’s parents’ death begins to approach. She wants nothing more than to move on and forget about the last two years. Lylah lives in a house, near her college, with five of her roommates; Chase, Sonny, Charlotte, Sienna, and Isaac. They all end up developing really close bonds. Lylah is hoping for Chase, her love interest, to make a move on her by the big day. But that hope quickly changes when one by one, each one of her roommates, begins to receive individual, personalized notes. At first, they think it’s just a silly prank but, as each roommate receives a note, less than twenty-four hours later, they get murdered. Everyone is determined to find out who the killer is but it's more difficult than it seems. Nobody expects the outcome of who the killer is.

If you are a fan of thriller or suspenseful books, I would definitely recommend to you, You Will Be Mine . I was at the edge of my seat after each chapter. This book goes into depth about how each murder scene is found, so if you are uncomfortable with descriptions of crime/murder scenes, I would not recommend to you this book. I personally am not a fan of thriller’s but this book did not once lose my interest.

9/10: very suspenseful

YOU WILL BE MINE

by Natasha Preston ‧ RELEASE DATE: Feb. 6, 2018

An unconvincing attempt at a holiday-themed thriller.

A serial killer terrorizes a group of university friends in the weeks leading up to Valentine’s Day.

White university student Lylah has complicated feelings about Valentine’s Day, as it marks the day her parents died two years prior. Though she has adjusted to her new life at school, where she lives with five friends and housemates, old anxieties arise when her housemates begin receiving mysterious, threatening notes a few weeks before Valentine’s Day. What is initially dismissed as a sick holiday prank becomes deadly serious when one of them is discovered brutally murdered on campus. The police become involved, providing rather ineffective security to the group of friends as they are stalked and hunted around town by an unknown murderer. Lylah and her friends jump to a hasty assumption about the killer’s identity early on and begin referring to the killer by the name of a former friend whom they suspect, improbably convinced that it must be him, excluding any other possibilities in the process. Classic slasher tropes are invoked frequently and repetitively, to highly implausible effect. The result of these unlikely plot developments, combined with flimsy dialogue and weak characterization, requires so much suspension of disbelief that it renders the story more comical than horrifying.

THE HAUNTING

IF ONLY I HAD TOLD HER

by Laura Nowlin ‧ RELEASE DATE: Feb. 6, 2024

A heavy read about the harsh realities of tragedy and their effects on those left behind.

In this companion novel to 2013’s If He Had Been With Me , three characters tell their sides of the story.

Finn’s narrative starts three days before his death. He explores the progress of his unrequited love for best friend Autumn up until the day he finally expresses his feelings. Finn’s story ends with his tragic death, which leaves his close friends devastated, unmoored, and uncertain how to go on. Jack’s section follows, offering a heartbreaking look at what it’s like to live with grief. Jack works to overcome the anger he feels toward Sylvie, the girlfriend Finn was breaking up with when he died, and Autumn, the girl he was preparing to build his life around (but whom Jack believed wasn’t good enough for Finn). But when Jack sees how Autumn’s grief matches his own, it changes their understanding of one another. Autumn’s chapters trace her life without Finn as readers follow her struggles with mental health and balancing love and loss. Those who have read the earlier book will better connect with and feel for these characters, particularly since they’ll have a more well-rounded impression of Finn. The pain and anger is well written, and the novel highlights the most troublesome aspects of young adulthood: overconfidence sprinkled with heavy insecurities, fear-fueled decisions, bad communication, and brash judgments. Characters are cued white.

A GOOD GIRL'S GUIDE TO MURDER

From the good girl's guide to murder series , vol. 1.

by Holly Jackson ‧ RELEASE DATE: Feb. 4, 2020

A treat for mystery readers who enjoy being kept in suspense.

Everyone believes that Salil Singh killed his girlfriend, Andrea Bell, five years ago—except Pippa Fitz-Amobi.

Pip has known and liked Sal since childhood; he’d supported her when she was being bullied in middle school. For her senior capstone project, Pip researches the disappearance of former Fairview High student Andie, last seen on April 18, 2014, by her younger sister, Becca. The original investigation concluded with most of the evidence pointing to Sal, who was found dead in the woods, apparently by suicide. Andie’s body was never recovered, and Sal was assumed by most to be guilty of abduction and murder. Unable to ignore the gaps in the case, Pip sets out to prove Sal’s innocence, beginning with interviewing his younger brother, Ravi. With his help, Pip digs deeper, unveiling unsavory facts about Andie and the real reason Sal’s friends couldn’t provide him with an alibi. But someone is watching, and Pip may be in more danger than she realizes. Pip’s sleuthing is both impressive and accessible. Online articles about the case and interview transcripts are provided throughout, and Pip’s capstone logs offer insights into her thought processes as new evidence and suspects arise. Jackson’s debut is well-executed and surprises readers with a connective web of interesting characters and motives. Pip and Andie are white, and Sal is of Indian descent.

The best books to read this month

From gripping thrillers to literary gems, here are some brilliant reads out this month.

With longer, lighter days, there's hopefully more time for reading. Whether you want a page-turning thriller , a gripping historical novel or a feel-good read , we've got some great choices out this month.

Same As It Ever Was by Claire Lombardo

Lombardo’s debut, The Most Fun We Ever Had , is a big favourite of mine, so I had huge expectations – and this delivered in spades. Fiftysomething Julia’s contented life is turned upside down by the reappearance of an old friend who nearly precipitated her downfall. An insightful, moving look at what it means to juggle motherhood and marriage while maintaining your sense of self.

Same As It Ever Was by Claire Lombardo

Ordinary Time by Cathy Rentzenbrink

This compassionate portrait of a reluctant vicar’s wife who’s at a crossroads in her life touched me deeply. Ann has moved to Cornwall for her husband’s work but is struggling with the fact he prioritises his faith and flock over her and their son. The character of Ann is so well written, it felt as if I knew her, and the story has stayed with me as a result.

Ordinary Time by Cathy Rentzenbrink

The Orange House by Isabelle Broom

A couple on the brink of divorce return to the house in Mallorca where they met 20 years before in this bittersweet, beautiful novel. It’s a bit of a departure for Broom, and although I love her escapist destination books, this sensitive exploration of marriage and mental health is her best yet.

The Orange House by Isabelle Broom

All The Colours Of The Dark by Chris Whitaker

Wow, what a book! This multilayered thriller manages to pull off both a twisty, race-through-it plot and wonderful characters that stay with you. Saint Brown is devastated when her childhood best friend is abducted – not knowing that when he’s finally found, nothing will ever be the same again.

All the Colours of the Dark by Chris Whitaker

All the Colours of the Dark by Chris Whitaker

No Small Thing by Orlaine McDonald

From the powerful opening scene full of tragedy, this poignant debut about mothers and daughters really gets under your skin. The story is told over a year on a south London estate and it follows three generations of women who have all lost their way and are counting on each other to get back on track.

No Small Thing by Orlaine McDonald

The Unwilding by Marina Kemp

A bohemian holiday home in Sicily is the enticing setting of this sublime debut. When young writer Zoe is invited on holiday with famed novelist Don Travers, she finds a man who happily plays host while women circle in his orbit. Years later, his daughter strikes up an unusual friendship with Zoe and forces her to face uncomfortable truths.

The Unwilding by Marina Kemp

Our Holiday by Louise Candlish

If you like a page-turner with a side of social commentary, this is for you. Second-homers clash with a group of locals in a picturesque seaside resort – with tragic consequences – in this story of one-upmanship, corruption and murder from the author of Our House .

Our Holiday by Louise Candlish

This Motherless Land by Nikki May

This new novel from the author of Wahala is a clever, fresh retelling of Jane Austen's Mansfield Park , focusing on identity and family. When Funke’s mother dies, she’s sent from her home in Nigeria to live with her mum’s British family in Somerset, who treat her like a second-class citizen.

This Motherless Land by Nikki May

The God Of The Woods by Liz Moore

With every book, Moore does something different. Her most novel Long Bright River was a gritty read about the opioid crisis (and a Barack Obama book of the year), while this new novel is an atmospheric thriller about a girl from a wealthy family who goes missing 16 years after her brother disappeared.

The God of the Woods by Liz Moore

The God of the Woods by Liz Moore

Probably Nothing by Lauren Bravo

When her short-term boyfriend dies suddenly, people-pleaser Bryony is taken in by his family, who mistakenly believe she’s the love of his life. A laugh-out-loud-funny, warm read about guilt and grief.

Probably Nothing by Lauren Bravo

GRAFTON — Following the closing of Ruggles Mine in 2016, there was much speculation in town about what the future held for what was once a hot spot for “rock hounds.”

Many residents questioned whether the mine, which dates back to the early 1800s, had any future at all. They believed Ruggles was “all mined out,” particularly its reservoir of mica, leaving little of interest for amateur geologists and other visitors.

But Joe Bodge and Eric LaRoche didn’t want to see Ruggles go the way of so many other abandoned mines from a bygone era. Last July, the two New Hampshire residents bought the mine just before it was scheduled for a foreclosure auction.

“I originally bought it just because I like rocks,” Bodge said last week. “It wasn’t a business deal originally.”

When Bodge and LaRoche took over the property, which had been shuttered for seven years, they knew they had their work cut out for them. The site was littered with trash. Trespassers and squatters had looted an old gift shop and museum.

Bodge and LaRoche cleaned up mountains (no pun intended) of trash, cleared overgrown areas of trees and weeds, and replaced broken windows in the gift shop.

After putting in a lot of sweat equity, Bodge and LaRoche reopened Ruggles Mine to the public last month.

The mine is open Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sundays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Mineral collectors pay a $30 per person fee. Kids under 10 are free. Camping is also available at $10 a night per person.

Really Bad Chess

“It was neat going in and seeing the (high cliffs) and unique rocks,” said John Cassidy, of Nashua, who spent last Sunday exploring Ruggles. “I’m glad I got a ride (on a golf cart) because it would’ve been a rough trek.”

Ruggles is part of a 235-acre parcel atop Isinglass Mountain in Grafton — home to a massive deposit of a variety of minerals, including mica — that was unearthed more than 200 years ago. Mica, a transparent mineral that separates easily into sheets, can endure high temperatures. It’s used in electrical appliances and lighting equipment, among other things.

A Boston businessman named Sam Ruggles began mining mica commercially on the mountain in 1803. It was the first mica mine in the country, remaining in operation for 150 years.

In 1961, Arvid and Geraldine Wahlstrom purchased Ruggles Mine for $20,000 and made it into a tourist attraction. So-called rock hounds brought their own pickaxes and shovels to collect samples.

After Ruggles was closed to the public in 2016, it was suggested the state buy the mine and turn it into a state park. New Hampshire officials ultimately passed on the proposal, citing concerns about liability and having the state’s parks department take on another property funded largely by user fees.

In 2019, the mine was sold to a New York-based production company called Exciglow for an estimated $500,000.

“From the outset, the dream of reopening Ruggles Mine to the public has been an uphill battle,” Chris DiPetta, former manager of Exciglow, said in a 2023 interview with the Concord Monitor, following the sale to Bodge and LaRoche. “The challenges were numerous, not the least of which was the pandemic striking just after acquiring it.”

Bodge and LaRoche “share my passion for Ruggles and bring substantial expertise,” DiPetta added. “I’m confident they will be successful in restoring this unique cultural asset to the people of New Hampshire.”

Bodge and LaRoche are committed to putting Ruggles back on the state tourism map. So much so, Bodge said, that “Eric and I are living here full time now in our campers, completely off-grid.”

They can’t turn the clock back completely, however. The mine’s walls are too fragile to expose to any form of chiseling or chipping into them, Bodge said.

But after decades of mining the land, “no one has even thought to really dig underneath the mine,” he said.

The property’s many hills and other areas are still full of minerals, with “wonderful” gems left to discover on the outer edges of the land and beneath it, Bodge said.

The mine itself is “known for really large crystals,” LaRoche said.

DiPetta, the former owner, told the Concord Monitor in 2023 that LaRoche has “expertise in minerals.”

He’s put that expertise to work at Ruggles. He serves as the mine’s tour guide, answering visitors’ questions and sharing information about what they’re seeing. People have a “greater appreciation, if they know what they’re looking at,” LaRoche said.

While mining inside Ruggles is no longer feasible, visitors are encouraged to explore, walk and dig in the land around it.

Areas deemed unsafe are being blocked off. Groups of rock and mineral specialists will be allowed into specific areas to break open potential rocks in search of gems and other stones.

In just the short time since the mine’s reopening, it’s hosted “rock and mineral clubs from everywhere,” Bodge said, noting clubs from Keene, Boston and Connecticut have already made the journey to Grafton.

The goal is to keep the land around the mine in its natural state wherever possible.

“We still have much work that needs to be done, many places to grow,” Bodge said. “But I love this place, and I am very excited for people to come and see it, and to share my love for Ruggles Mine with the rest of the world.”

Infinix GT Book Box Contents

Design and Build

Key Takeaways: 1. Solid metal lid and finish brings a premium in-hand feel. 2. Despite that, it is very lightweight at just around 2 kgs. 3. Mostly a smudge proof body. 4. There’s back lighting which is also RGB and can be customized.

Infinix GT Book Front Design with Lid Open

Flipping the laptop over, I spotted the pretty orange vents at the bottom , that scream gaming all the way. The two bottom firing speakers on each side also sport this orange covering. There are four rubber feet at the bottom, with two at the front, a big edge-to-edge one at the back, and behind it, a smaller button-like orange one. Yes, I tried pressing it like a dumdum.

Keyboard and Trackpad

Key Takeaways: 1. Keyboard makes a strange rattling noise when typing, but the key travel is good enough. 2. The 4-zone RGB keyboard which can be very easily customized. 3. The glass trackpad is one of the best I’ve used on a gaming laptop.

Infinix GT Book Keyboard

Again, you get to see the Infinix GT branding towards the extreme right on the textured panel at the lid. We know it’s the Infinix GT, Infinix!

RGB on the Infinix GT Book Keyboard

The trackpad placement, while a bit good makes sense because of the way gaming laptops are designed. That has been a problem with most Infinix laptops since they come with these unnecessarily big trackpads. Good to see the brand take a different approach with this one.

Display and Speakers

Key Takeaways: 1. Display hit over 360 nits and offers good indoor and outdoor visibility. 2. The speakers are loud but lack treble and bass, making it all sound flat.

Infinix GT Book Display Quality

As for the brightness levels, the Spyder X recorded a peak brightness of 365 nits . However, at 50%, it gives you just around 70 nits, which is too low for my taste. Apart from a dark room at night, it won’t offer good visibility at that level.

Performance

Key Takeaways: 1. The laptop’s day-to-day performance of the laptop is incredible, with zero lags or stutters. 2. Gaming performance is stellar, with frame generation offering boosting performance further. 3. The laptop’s thermal management is amazing, barely going beyond 80 degrees after hours of gaming.

Infinix GT Book Gaming

The Infinix GT Book is powered by the Intel Core i5 13th Gen 13420H CPU. It’s further backed by a dedicated 6GB Nvidia GeForce RTX 4050 with a 90W TGP . You also get dedicated 16GB LPDDR5X RAM and 512GB of PCIe Gen 4.0 SSD.

Day-to-Day Usage

Infinix GT Book Time Spy Score

Let’s get to what you all were waiting for. Gaming. Thankfully the Infinix GT Book is an absolute monster of a gaming laptop. While I knew how good the RTX 4050 was at this price point, I couldn’t help but be amazed at how well it ran every game that I played on it.

1. Hellblade 2 and Alan Wake 2

2. cyberpunk 2077.

I got consistent frames throughout and most importantly, the keyboard never got uncomfortably hot. So, I could play for a decent couple of hours. Turning off ray tracing boosted the FPS to 120 which is beyond commendable for a game like Cyberpunk.

3. COD Warzone

4. apex legends, thermal management.

The best thing is even after gaming for around two hours, the Infinix GT Book’s GPU temps barely hit 75 degrees , while the CPU temps stabilized at around 78 degrees , occasionally spiking to 80. Surface temps remained cool with the keyboard being comfortable to touch. The laptop’s back panel was the warmest, at just around 43 degrees.

Infinix GT Book Internals

Upgradability and Port Selection

Key Takeaways: 1. The laptop comes with soldered RAM thereby eliminating upgradability. 2. Thankfully, the storage is upgradable up to 2TB. 3. The GT Book does come with a good selection of ports alongside a UHS-II SD slot.

Infinix GT Book Left Side Ports

Coming to the ports, you get to see a USB 3.2 Gen 2 and a USB 3.2 Gen 1 port. In addition, there’s a DP port for you to make use of, which further increases the versatility of the GT Book. There’s also an HDMI 2.0 port along with a UHS-II SD slot. Such SD slots are super duper useful but uncommon to come across, and I’m glad Infinix decided to slap one onto this laptop.

Software Experience

Key Takeaways: 1. While software experience is rather good Infinix is not known to offer BIOS updates. 2. The GT Book’s drivers are not yet officially available which is a problem. 3. The Control Center looks barebones and could use some work to offer more advanced controls.

Infinix GT Book Review: A Near Perfect Gaming Laptop

Another problem is that the brand hasn’t uploaded the drivers for the GT Book yet . So, I’d recommend not doing a cloud reinstall if you ever want to reset it, since that will really mess up the laptop. We have faced this issue with some other Infinix laptops in the office in the past. It was only very recently that the brand made the drivers for their older laptops available. Infinix, if you’re reading this, please be timely with driver availability.

Battery and Charging

Key Takeaways: 1. Solid battery backup that delivers up to 7 hours on a single full charge. 2. Charging speeds are decent, taking around 1.5 hours to fully charge.

Infinix GT Book Charging

Talking about the battery, the Infinix GT Book packs a 70Whr unit. I have already let you in on what my daily usage looks like (check the performance section). After all of that with the brightness level between 60-70%, fans set to quiet mode, and all the RGBs off, I got around 6.7 hours of screen time .

Verdict: Is the Infinix GT Book Worth It?

Infinix GT Book placed on a table

For the price that it comes in, the RTX 4050-powered Infinix GT Book makes a lot of sense if you want something powerful and silent at the same time, as well as doesn’t come with the bulk of a powerful gaming rig. It doesn’t show off too much with insane fan RPMs and also lets you choose between being too flashy with RGBs or going all stealthy. Not to mention that it feels a lot more premium than its competition.

Since I became science fiction columnist for New Scientist , I have had to think a lot about what qualifies as sci-fi. Very often, a book could actually be classified as fantasy, which is outside my remit. More and more, I find myself agreeing with the writer Damon Knight when he said: “Science fiction is what I point to [when I say] ‘That’s science fiction’.”

Anyway, for this holiday reading special, I present my list of some of the year’s best sci-fi so far. All that binds these incredibly diverse books…

Sodium layered oxide cathodes: properties, practicality and prospects.

Rechargeable sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) have emerged as an advanced electrochemical energy storage technology with potential to alleviate the dependence on lithium resources. Similar to Li-ion batteries, the cathode materials play a decisive role in the cost and energy output of SIBs. Among various cathode materials, Na layered transition-metal (TM) oxides have become an appealing choice owing to their facile synthesis, high Na storage capacity/voltage that are suitable for use in high-energy SIBs, and high adaptivity to the large-scale manufacture of Li layered oxide analogues. However, going from the lab to the market, the practical use of Na layered oxide cathodes is limited by the ambiguous understanding of the fundamental structure-performance correlation of cathode materials and lack of customized material design strategies to meet the diverse demands in practical storage applications. In this review, we attempt to clarify the fundamental misunderstandings by elaborating the correlations between the electron configuration of the critical capacity-contributing elements ( e.g. , TM cations and oxygen anion) in oxides and their influence on the Na (de)intercalation (electro)chemistry and storage properties of the cathode. Subsequently, we discuss the issues that hinder the practical use of layered oxide cathodes, their origins and the corresponding strategies to address their issues and accelerate the target-oriented research and development of cathode materials. Finally, we discuss several new Na layered cathode materials that show prospects for next-generation SIBs, including layered oxides with anion redox and high entropy and highlight the use of layered oxides as cathodes for solid-state SIBs with higher energy and safety. In summary, we aim to offer insights into the rational design of high-performance Na layered oxide cathode materials towards the practical realization of sustainable electrochemical energy storage at a low cost.
