Speech on Love

Love, a simple four-letter word, yet it holds a world of emotions within. It’s like a warm hug that soothes your heart and a force that moves mountains.

This feeling is not just about romance. It extends to friends, family, and even strangers. A kind smile, a helping hand, that’s love too.

1-minute Speech on Love

Ladies and gentlemen, today I stand before you to talk about a simple yet powerful word – Love. Love is not just a word, it is a feeling that can be as soft as a feather and as strong as a storm.

Love is also about understanding and respect. It’s about listening to each other, even when you disagree. Love is patient, it doesn’t rush. It waits, it understands, it forgives. It’s not just about saying “I love you”, it’s about showing it through your actions every day.

But remember, love is not just for others. It’s also about loving yourself. It’s about treating yourself with kindness and respect. You can’t truly love others until you learn to love yourself. It’s like a flower. You need to water it, give it sunlight, and protect it from harm, so it can bloom and spread its fragrance to the world.

So, let us all promise today to spread love everywhere we go. Let us not just say it, but show it in our actions. Let’s make the world a better place with love. Because love, my friends, is the most beautiful thing in the world.

2-minute Speech on Love

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Let’s talk about love. Love, a simple four-letter word, holds a universe of feelings. It’s like the sun, shining bright, spreading warmth, and making life beautiful. Love is what makes us kind, patient, and understanding. It’s a powerful force that can create miracles.

Think about your family. The people who care for you, who look out for you. Your parents, brothers, sisters, they all love you. They would do anything for you. That’s the magic of love. It makes us brave. It gives us the strength to move mountains if we need to. Love in a family is like the roots of a tree, it keeps us grounded, it gives us our identity.

Now, imagine your friends. People you laugh with, people you share your secrets with. They might not be related to you, but they love you and you love them. Love among friends is like a cool breeze on a hot day. It brings relief, comfort, and joy. It makes life fun. It helps us grow.

Then, there is the love that makes your heart race, that makes you feel butterflies in your stomach. Yes, I am talking about romantic love. When you fall in love, you see the world through rose-colored glasses. Everything seems wonderful. This love is like a beautiful song that you want to keep listening to. It gives life a new meaning.

But love is not always easy. Sometimes it can be tough. Sometimes it can hurt. But even when it hurts, it teaches us. It makes us grow. It makes us better. Like a rainstorm that may be scary but leaves the earth fresh and green, love can bring tears but also joy and growth.

Lastly, let’s not forget about self-love. The love you have for yourself. This love is like a mirror. It shows you who you really are. It helps you understand yourself. It makes you strong. It helps you to love others better.

So, let’s celebrate love. Let’s cherish it. Let’s spread it. Because love can change the world. It can bring peace. It can bring happiness.

9 of the best big romantic movie speeches.

By Britton Perelman · February 9, 2022

speech on true love

Sometimes they happen in the rain, or on a plane. Or maybe when you’re leaving a party, sitting by a pool, or maybe graduating middle school.

Big romantic speeches are the trademark of romance dramas and romantic comedies, a staple of the genre if there ever was one. But while they might be a given trope, the subject matter of these swoon-worthy speeches can vary greatly.

From the practicalities of relationships to head-over-heels declarations, here’s a list of 9 of the best big romantic movie speeches.

Spoiler alert: most of these speeches take place at the end of their respective movies, so plot spoilers abound.

When Harry Met Sally…

The new year’s eve speech.

After running through New York City on New Year’s Eve, Harry makes it to the party just in time to find Sally. Their eyes meet and he says the perfect line: “I’ve been doing a lot of thinking, and the thing is, I love you.” As the partygoers around them count down to the new year and start singing  Auld Lang Syne , Harry declares his love for her.

“I love that you get cold when it’s 71 degrees out. I love that it takes you an hour and a half to order a sandwich. I love that you get a little crinkle above your nose when you’re looking at me like I’m nuts. I love that after I spend a day with you, I can still smell your perfume on my clothes. And I love that you are the last person I want to talk to before I go to sleep at night. And it’s not because I’m lonely, and it’s not because it’s New Year’s Eve. I came here tonight because when you realize you want to spend the rest of your life with somebody, you want the rest of your life to start as soon as possible.”

Can you think of a better way to ring in the new year? Me either.

The Notebook

 the “i want you” speech.

Noah and Allie fell in love when they were teenagers, were kept apart by her parents, and found their way back to one another years later when Allie was engaged to another man. During a heated argument, Noah lays it all on the line for her. In a hopelessly romantic movie full of hopelessly romantic lines (“If you’re a bird, I’m a bird”) Noah’s emphatic, brutally honest depiction of love would make anyone a little weak in the knees.

“So it’s not gonna be easy, it’s gonna be really hard. And we’re gonna have to work at this every day, but I wanna do that because I want you. I want all of you. Forever. You and me. Every day.”

Silver Linings Playbook

 pat’s letter to tiffany.

After their dance competition, Pat walks away from Tiffany and goes to speak with his ex-wife. Hurt, and thinking that he’s still in love with her, Tiffany storms out of the hotel. When Pat finally catches up to her, he hands her a letter. As she reads it, Pat begins to speak the words aloud.

“The only way you could meet my crazy was by doing something crazy yourself. Thank you. I love you. I knew it the minute I met you. I’m sorry it took so long for me to catch up, I just got stuck.”

The scene ends with Pat revealing that he wrote the letter a week before their competition and a perfect kiss under the street’s twinkly lights.

The “Hill of Beans” Speech

Casablanca  is deceptively romantic. It’s a war movie without any combat, a love story without any sex scenes. And it ends with a whopper of a speech.

Rick has just revealed that he’s not getting on the plane with Ilsa, that he’s letting her leave with Victor Laszlo. And then… he tells her why…

Ilsa: “But what about us?” Rick: “We’ll always have Paris. We didn’t have— we’d lost it until you came to Casablanca. We got it back last night.” Ilsa: “When I said I would never leave you.” Rick” “And you never will. But I’ve got a job to do too, and where I’m going you can’t follow. What I’ve got to do, you can’t be any part of. Ilsa, I’m no good at being noble, but it doesn’t take much to see that the problems of three little people don’t amount to a hill of beans in this crazy world. Someday you’ll understand that. Now, now. Here’s looking at you, kid.”

Palm Springs

The “run-on sentence” speech.

We all know the infinite time loop drill — Sarah and Nyles, stuck in the same day over and over again. There’s some comedy, there’s some romance. Eventually, she wants out.

And after spending some of her infinite days studying quantum physics, Sarah thinks she’s found a way out of the loop. She’s about to leave when Nyles catches up to her. But Sarah interrupts his big speech and instead gives him a single sentence.

Nyles: “Even though I pretend not to be, I’ve realized that I am completely co-dependent, but I’m cool with it because I think that life should be shared now, and I need you to survive—” Sarah: “Okay. That’s your one sentence.” Nyles: “I need you to survive, COMMA, but it’s so much more than that, COLON: I know you better than anyone knows you, and remember that night that we saw the dinosaurs, you said it yourself, in order to really know a person you have to see their entire package, the good and the bad, and I’ve seen your package, and it is excellent, Sarah, AMPERSAND you’re my favorite person that I’ve ever met, and yes, I know that it’s crazy odds that the person I like the most in my entire life would be someone I met while I was stuck in a time loop, but you know what else is crazy odds? Getting stuck in a time loop. Dot dot dot—“ Sarah: “Ellipses.” Nyles: “Ellipses, thank you. Ellipses. Look, I hope that blowing ourselves up works, but it’s really irrelevant to me, as long as I’m with you, and if it kills us, well then, I’d rather die with you than live in this world without you. Emphatic period.”

The Proposal

The proposal proposal.

Sometimes romantic speeches are a little sappy, other times they start with an explanation of absolute hate. After spending an unexpected weekend together, Andrew realizes that the person he thought he despised is actually the one he wants to spend his life with. So he tells her just that in an honest, heartfelt, and slightly amusing speech in front of all their co-workers.

“Three days ago, I loathed you. I used to dream about you getting hit by a cab, or poisoned. Then we had our little adventure up in Alaska and things started to change. Things changed when we kissed. And when you told me about your tattoo. Even when you checked me out when we were naked. But I didn’t realize any of this until I was standing alone, in a barn, wifeless. Now, you can imagine my disappointment when it suddenly dawned on me that the woman I love is about to be kicked out of the country. So Margaret, marry me. Because I’d like to date you.”

Crazy Rich Asians

The “plane proposal” speech.

Whoever said that boarding a plane wasn’t romantic clearly hadn’t met Nick Young, who somehow manages to make it the perfect place for a proposal.

“I always imagined what me proposing to you would be like. You know what? I had it all planned out. Oh— right behind you, don’t mind me. I’d bring you to my favorite spot on the island. There’s a hidden trail that I used to go to as a child, and there’s a cove there that opens up to this beautiful lake— um, sorry dude. Give me a second. When the sun hits the horizon, I’d get down on one knee, and the rest of the world would fall away because it would just be you and— sorry, I can help you with that. Stay there. You too? Watch your fingers. Lift that up. Okay. Everybody okay? Because I just need 30 seconds with this woman. Okay, thank you. Coming through, sorry. I know this is a far throw from a hidden paradise, but wherever you are in the world, that’s where I belong.”

Crazy, Stupid, Love

 the “soulmate” speech.

After Robbie gives half of an incredibly cynical middle-school graduation speech about how true love is a lie, his dad stands up in the crowd and takes over. Cal then stands up and ruminates on the subject of soulmates.

“My son — not him, my actual son — believes in grand, romantic gestures. He believes in the existence of one’s soulmate. And it’s easy to just look at a 13-year-old and say, ‘You don’t know what you’re talking about. You are wrong.’ But I’m not so sure. I met my soulmate when I was 15 years old. We went out for ice cream. After, my dad started teasing me about my first date, the way dads do, and I told him, ‘Dad, it’s no big deal. I’m gonna be going out with a lot of different girls on a lot of different dates.’ And that is the first time that I ever lied to my father. I met my soulmate when I was 15 years old, and I have loved her every minute or every day since I first bought her that mint chocolate chip cone. I have loved her through the birth of my three perfect children. I have loved her even when I’ve hated her. Only married couples will understand that one. And I don’t know if it’s gonna work out. I don’t know what’s gonna happen. Sorry, Robbie, I can’t give you that. But I can promise you this: I will never stop trying. Because when you find the one, you never give up.”

Not exactly what my middle-school graduation was like, but I think I prefer the movie version, don’t you?

The Map of Tiny Perfect Things

The speech by the pool.

What is it about infinite time loops that make people prone to romantic speeches?

In this one, the two main characters spend their infinite days looking for tiny perfect things in their unchanging world. And after some complications and a big revelation, they end up at their neighborhood pool. Margaret explains to Mark that on the worst day of her life, all she wanted was for time to stop. And it did.

“And then the really weird thing is that you showed up and I didn’t know where you came from and why it was you. And now I think I know why. I think it’s because, when it’s time to go, I wouldn’t have to go alone. It’s time. It’s not gonna be perfect, you know? We’re never gonna find the fourth dimension or cure cancer or fix the world, but the point is that I was wrong. We’re the ones sleeping. Everyone else is awake and it’s just us dreaming. I know it’s gonna hurt really bad. But I think that I have to wake up now. I think that this is the moment. Right now. And I don’t want to miss it.”

And then she kisses him, which is exactly how all big romantic speeches should end, don’t you think?

Honorable Mentions

  • What Tim says to Mary when he’s trying to convince her to ditch the party and get dinner with him in  About Time , which doesn’t make this list because it’s a conversation, not a speech.
  • Christian’s declaration of love to Satine in  Moulin Rouge ’s “Elephant Love Medley,” which doesn’t make this list because it’s a song, not a speech.
  • Jack saying “I wish I knew how to quit you,” in  Brokeback Mountain , which doesn’t make this list because it’s really just a single line, not a full-fledged speech.
  • Juno’s dad’s speech about love in  Juno , which doesn’t make this list because he’s teaching his daughter a life lesson, not declaring his love for someone.
  • The “things I hate about you” poem in  10 Things I Hate About You , which doesn’t make this list because it’s a poem, not a real speech.

The Concept of True Love Definition Essay

  • To find inspiration for your paper and overcome writer’s block
  • As a source of information (ensure proper referencing)
  • As a template for you assignment

Introduction

Understanding the unrealistic notion of true love, the concept of love itself is an illusion, works cited.

The concept of true love is based on the belief that to truly love someone you have to accept them for who they are (including their shortcoming and faults), put their happiness above your own (even if your heart is broken in the process) and that you will always love them even if they are not by your side.

In essence it is a self-sacrificing act wherein a person puts another person’s happiness and well-being above their own. For example in the poem “To my Dear and Loving Husband” by Anne Bradstreet she compares her love for her spouse as “more than whole mines of gold or all the riches that the East doth hold” (Bradstreet, 1). While such an example is archaic it does present itself as an excellent example of the value of true love for other people.

What must be understood though is that in recent years the concept of true has been adopted by popular culture as a needed facet in a person’s life. Various romantic comedies produced by Hollywood all portray characters that at one point or another exhibit tendencies akin to the realization that their life is incomplete without true love and that they should seek it out in the form of female or male character that has been provided as an embodiment of what true love should be.

Due to the influences of popular culture on modern day society this has resulted in more people believing in the concept of true love and actively seeking it out as a result. The inherent problem with this is that true love is an ideal that can be considered the embodiment of every single positive thing that can happen actually happening. In that a person that fits your idea of the perfect partner suddenly appears, that events lead the two of you to be together and that the end result is a classic happily ever after ending.

Unfortunately it must be noted that the concept of the “ideal” is based on the best possible action, event and circumstance actually happening. The fact remains that the real world, unlike in the movies, does not revolve around fortuitous circumstances and the supposed ideal is nothing more than a fanciful notion created by the movie industry.

For example in the story “Rose for Emily” it can be seen that the main character, Emily Grierson, goes to such lengths of retaining love that she murders Homer Barron in order to keep him by her side (Faulkner, 1). The reason behind this action is simple, by the time Homer Barron came into her life she couldn’t experience true love as we know it in the movies due to the effect of reality.

Due to this she creates the illusion of love which she wraps around herself. While most people don’t go to the lengths Emily had done it must be noted that they often follow the same pattern of developing the illusion of true love and retaining its idea. Since the concept of finding true love revolves around finding the ideal partner and that the ideal partner is nothing more than a fanciful creation it can be said that the reality of true love does not exist since it revolves around a fictitious notion and principle.

In the story of Araby readers are introduced to the concept of an unrealistic idea of the embodiment of love wherein the narrator (in the form of a young boy) falls in apparent rapture at the sight of Mangan’s sister. Though she is never mentioned by name the line “I pressed the palms of my hands together until they trembled, murmuring: ‘O love! O love!’ many times”, shows that the boy indeed developed substantial feelings for her (Joyce, 1).

It fact it is suggested numerous times in the story that the boy thinks that what he feels is true love and this is exemplified by his action of offering to buy the girl some souvenir from the Araby fair. Yet once he gets there he encounters a full grown woman at a stand idly chatting with men on various nonsensical topics.

It is then that he comes to the realization that he had crafted for himself a false ideal and that what lay before him was an example of what he could gain in the future. It must be noted that in essence this particular encounter shows what happens when an “ideal” meets reality in that the boy had been so presumptuous in crafting an “ideal” for himself that he neglected to take into account the possibility of better things in the future.

The line “I saw myself as a creature driven and derided by vanity; and my eyes burned with anguish and anger” is an indication of the point in the story when the boy comes to the realization that his ideal was false and that he only though that way because of his isolated world (Joyce, 1).

The story itself could be considered a microcosm of reality with Mangan’s sister acting as the concept of true love. The isolated nature of the idea of love developed by the boy in the story could be compared to the propagated concept of true love in movie industry wherein concepts related to the ideal partner as exemplified by various movies are in effect false when compared to the realities people face.

All too often people think of a person as their true love in an isolated fashion, conceptualizing in them in a world devoid of the interference of reality wherein their every move is considered lovely and perfect.

While such a concept is seen in numerous films it can be seen though that this particular point of view is usually false since when the outside world of reality is introduced people tend to see their “ideals” for what they really are and as a result their behaviors towards such loves usually change.

In essence it can be boiled down to true love being a fantasy created through the isolation of an individual from reality and as such can never be truly attained since once reality is introduced the fantasies diminish resulting in reality taking over banishing the illusion and subjecting people to the harsh truths that they neglected to see.

In the story bitch by Roald Dahl readers are introduced to the notion that passion incited through the creation of a simple chemical compound. This notion is actually symbolic of an ongoing thought that feelings of love are nothing more than illusion created by chemicals and hormones in the body that induce such feelings in order to propagate the species.

In fact various studies have do indeed show that love is a chemical reaction in the brain and as such if properly triggered through an outside source it can be assumed that this can in effect create the same feelings of love.

In fact the poem “Love is not all” by Edna St Vinven Millay says its best when she states that “Love is not all, is not meat or drink nor slumber nor roof against the rain”; from this it can be said that love is immaterial, nothing more than an illusion created by man (Millay, 1). For example in the story it can be seen that once males are affected by the chemical they all of sudden give into to primal urgings for procreation and don’t remember their actions afterwards (Dahl, 1).

Such an effect is suggestive of the fact that in essence people only consider love as love when there is a thought that tries to explain it. The loss of memory of events in the story is symbolic of the loss of thought and as a result the loss of the ability to associate a particular action with love.

In effect the story suggests that love itself is nothing more than a chemical reaction and that as logical individuals we try to justify it through other means that what it actually is. If this is so, the concept of true love itself is again proven to be nothing more than an illusion since it can be considered nothing more than a chemical and hormonal reaction rather than originating from some arbitrary and yet to be defined origin.

Famous Speeches Sure to Inspire Your Next Declaration of Love

Whether it’s your new boo, your old BFF, or your tattooed barista, someone in your life is worthy of a little love. But articulating the abstract, undefinable feeling of l-o-v-e can be a pain in the . . . you know what.

We’ve worked on many beautiful speeches, but the most memorable professions of love? They don’t hold anything back. They’re honest and enthusiastic and unforgivingly passionate. So to help you express yourself like a pro, we’ve compiled a list of top speeches sure to inspire declarations of love to just about anyone in your life.

For your significant other who supports you from afar—and with whom you wish you had more red carpet photos: Ryan Gosling wins a Golden Globe in 2017 and takes the opportunity to thank his behind-the-scenes support system, Eva Mendes. And while the rest of us might have fawned more than Mendes, it had to have made her knees at least a little weak. Gosling reminds us that when it comes to a happily ever after, it takes two. (Minutes 0:55–1:33)

For your never-could-there-ever-be-a-smarter-cooler-stronger soulmate: The mic drop heard ’round the world. Though you’ll likely not be speaking to your sweetheart as the president of the United States, take a cue from number 44, who keeps it real in the most unreal of circumstances. In his last speech as POTUS, Obama applauds Michelle’s ability to take on the First Lady role “with grace, and with grit, and with style.” And if you’re lucky enough to find yourself a Michelle, you’ll need to deliver many speeches like this. She deserves it.

For that person who seeks light in the darkness: At a time when the world is at risk of forgetting the importance of love, Lin-Manuel Miranda has the perfect message to remind us that, “Love is love is love is love is love is love is love, cannot be killed or swept aside.” His words at the 2016 Tony’s spotlight the idea that love and kindness really can conquer all. (Minutes 1:50–2:46)

Alexa Chung Brings a Love Letter From the Past to Vogue World 2024

For your best and oldest friend who inspires you—and looks real good in a tuxedo: Before Barack and Joe, there was Matt and Ben, whose friendship inspired bromances, matching necklaces, and a Mindy Kaling off-Broadway play. From Beantown to Tinseltown, the pair shows us how best to conquer the world with your best friend forever. Their 1997 Academy Awards speech reminds us that before Gigli and Bourne , they were just two dudes from Boston with a lot of enthusiasm for some guy named Chris Moore. (Minutes 0:45–1:52)

For all the old friends who made you a survivor: Let’s face it: Not everyone is meant to be in your life for always. But even those once-upon-a-time friends were there at a time when you needed them. Or, if you’re Beyoncé, they, ya know, helped make you Beyoncé. In the classiest speech to ever grace the 2011 Billboard Music Awards, Queen Bey thanks all the founding members of Destiny’s Child, saying their name (saying their name) before she—bonus—calls out Jay Z in the cutest shout-out ever. (Minutes 9:00–10:53)

For the people who maybe you don’t always get along with but, hey, there’s love for them too: At the Screen Actors Guild Awards last month, Mahershala Ali proves there’s enough love to go around and that, sometimes, differences can be beautiful. Just as you’ll always have people in your life who disagree with you, you’ll always have a choice on how to react to them. So why not choose love? (From 1:00–2:00, or the whole speech)

For a parent who inspired you and put up with all your ridiculous hairdos: At the 2014 Academy Awards, Jared Leto tells the unlikely story of a young high school dropout who, against all odds, creates a happy life for her family. Spoiler alert: That girl is his mother and her child now has an Oscar. Let this speech be your inspiration when thanking Mom and Dad, whose early struggles paved the way for your achievements. (Minutes 1:36–2:24)

For all the people who make you feel seen and appreciated and validated: It’s hard to believe that a goddess like Sally Field could ever feel unlikable—and yet, her Academy Awards speech from 1985 tells otherwise. Though it’s famously misquoted as “You like me! You really like me!” the sentiment holds true. Sometimes external validation ain’t such a bad thing. This Valentine’s Day, maybe it’s your turn to do a little validating. (From 3:20–3:50)

For the coworker you’ve thanked too silently in the past: Sometimes people need to hear your appreciation a little bit louder now. Here, Cuba Gooding Jr. accepts his 1997 Oscar by literally shouting praise to those who helped him along the way. Let this speech inspire your own standing ovation for all the coworkers who’ve helped you organize Outlook. (1:10–1:57)

For your insanely precocious daughter who inspires your funniest one-liners: They may pick their noses in your presence. They may make you park seven blocks away when you pick them up from school. But your kids also challenge you to look at life through a different lens, making you a little wiser and, most likely, a lot funnier. At the 2009 SAG Awards, Tina Fey shows us the right way to say thank you for using all my makeup. (2:28–3:24)

“And the Greatest of These Is Love”

Gordon b. hinckley.

of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles

February 14, 1978

I so greatly appreciated that music. I have never heard a rendering of “I Need Thee Every Hour” quite like that, nor one that has touched me more deeply. I did not know that it was Indian Week at BYU, or I might have spoken of these wonderful people. As it is, I shall speak to them, and to you also wonderful people.

It is so refreshing to stand before you. You give life, vitality, and beauty to the present, and assurance to the future. I always come here with a feeling of inadequacy. But today I feel a little more confident. At the close of a recent stake conference a teenage girl handed me a sealed envelope which I opened on the plane on the way home. It contained a letter that read in part:

Dear Brother Hinckley:

I just wanted to thank you for coming to our stake for this conference. That was really a neat message. . . . I wanted to know if you know Paul Dunn . He’s my favorite speaker, and he’s the one that dedicated our building. I haven’t heard from him for a while, but you are every bit as good a speaker as he is.

Now, having established my credentials, and having sought the direction of the Holy Spirit, I wish to talk about something in which all of you are interested—something for which all of you long, which you need, and without which the world can indeed be a lonely and a dreary place. I do so because this is Valentine’s Day.

On this day, when I was a little boy, we traded paper hearts at school, and at night we dropped them at the doors of our friends, stamping on the porch and then running in the dark to hide. Sometimes we would tie a fishing line to a valentine, and when the would-be receiver would go to pick it up we would pull the string. That happens in life with some of us.

Almost without exception these valentines had printed on their face the words, “I love you.” I have since come to know that love is more than a paper heart. It is the very essence of life. It is the pot of gold at the end of a rainbow. But it is not at the end of a rainbow; it is at the beginning, and from it springs the beauty that arches across the sky on a stormy day. It is the security for which children weep, the meat and drink of youth, the adhesive that binds marriage and the lubricant that prevents devastating friction in the home; it is the peace of old age, the sunlight of hope shining through death. How impoverished are those who lack it, and how rich those who have it!

For most of you here today, it is one of the reasons for your presence on campus. You are here because of the love of your parents, whose interest is your present and future happiness. You say you are here to gain an education, and I hope that is true. But in your hearts you know you are also here to find a companion, that someone with whom you hope you can fall in love, later marry, and then live happily with forever after. This is not an idle, idyllic dream. It happens. I know it happens; I have experienced it. And you know it happens and you hope and pray it will happen to you.

I am one who believes that love, like faith, is a gift of God. I agree with Pearl Buck, who said: “Love cannot be forced, love cannot be coaxed and teased. It comes out of heaven, unasked and unsought” ( The Treasure Chest,  p. 165).

Some of you have taken classes to prepare you the better for that hoped-for time. They may help qualify you, and each of us needs all the help he can get. But I am inclined to agree with Sydney Harris, the columnist, who wrote:

One of the grand errors we tend to make when we are young is supposing that a person is a bundle of qualities, and we add up the individual’s good and bad qualities, like a bookkeeper working on debits and credits.

If the balance is favorable, we may decide to take the jump  [into marriage].  . . . The world is full of unhappy men and women who married their mates because . . . it seemed to be a good investment.

Love, however, is not an investment; it is an adventure. And when the marriage turns out to be as dull and comfortable as a sound investment, the disgruntled party soon turns elsewhere for adventure, . . .

Ignorant people are always saying, “I wonder what he sees in her,” not realizing that what he sees in her (and what no one else can see in her) is the secret essence of love.

Entering a marriage calmly and rationally is like dancing a bacchanal calmly and rationally; it is a contradiction in terms. It takes into account everything except what is important—the spirit.  [“Love and Marriage,”  Deseret News,  18 October 1977]

I had a friend who decided that his would be a scientific marriage—one built on the qualities of his wife, rather than his feelings for her. He lived in California in a large ward and a large stake where there were many attractive girls his own age. In the pursuit of his quest he made a chart. At the top of each column he set down some worthwhile quality such as beauty, education, ambition, a wealthy father, and so forth. Then down the side of his chart he wrote the names of all the girls he knew. He then graded each, and rated them in numerical order—1, 2, 3, 4, and so on. He proceeded to make his conquest.

Expectantly, he called Number 1; she refused to go out with him. Number 2 also had an excuse. Number 3 gambled on one date, the last; and he ended up marrying Number 4. A year later someone sent me a copy of the local paper in which my friend gave notice that he no longer would be responsible for debts incurred by his wife. Divorce followed shortly after that. Forty years have passed and my once-burned and loveless friend has never remarried.

I think of two other friends of about the same vintage, a boy and a girl. I knew them in the years of high school and university. He was a boy from a country town, plain in appearance, without money or apparent promise. He had grown up on a farm, and if he had any quality that was attractive it was the capacity to work. He carried bologna sandwiches in a brown paper bag for his lunch and swept the school floors to pay his tuition. But with all of his rustic appearance, he had a smile and a personality that seemed to sing of goodness. She was a city girl who had come out of a comfortable home, but she would never have qualified for a beauty contest. Her face was freckled, but she made the most of what she had in the quiet but attractive manner of her dressing and in the way she fixed her hair.

Something of magic took place between them. They fell in love. No one could understand why. There were far more promising boys for her and far more beautiful girls who might have interested him. But these two laughed and danced and studied together through those years. They married when people wondered how they could ever earn enough to stay alive. He struggled through his professional school and came out near the top of his class. She scrimped and saved and worked and prayed. She encouraged and sustained and when things were really tough she said quietly, “Somehow we’ll make it.” Buoyed by her faith in him, he kept going through those difficult years. Their children came, and together they loved them and nourished them and gave them the security that came of their own example of love for and loyalty to one another. Now forty-five years and more have passed. Their children are grown and are a credit to them, to the Church, and to the communities in which they live.

Recently, while riding a plane from New York, I walked down the aisle in the semi-darkness of the cabin and saw a woman, white-haired, her head on her husband’s shoulder as she dozed and his hand clasped warmly about hers. He was awake and recognized me. She awakened when we began to talk. They, too, were returning from New York, where he had delivered a paper before one of the great learned societies of the nation. He said little about it, but she proudly spoke of the honors accorded him. Forty-five years ago people without understanding had asked what he saw in her and what she saw in him.

I thought of that as I returned to my seat on the plane. And I said to myself, their friends of those days saw only a farm boy from the country and a smiling girl with freckles on her nose. But these two saw in each other love, loyalty, peace, faith, and the future. Call it chemistry if you will; maybe there was a little of that, but there was much more. There was rather a flowering of something divine, planted there by that Father who is our God. In their school days they had lived worthy of that flowering. They had lived with virtue and faith, with appreciation and respect for self and one another. In the years of their difficult professional and economic struggles, they had found their greatest earthly strength in their companionship. Now in age they were finding their peace, their quiet satisfaction together. And beyond that they were assured of an eternity of joyful association under covenants long since made and promises long since given in the house of the Lord.

Reflecting on the picture I had just seen of these two happy people, there came into my mind these lines read long ago from Robert Louis Stevenson:

Trusty, dusky, vivid, true, With eyes of gold and bramble-dew, Steel true and blade straight The great Artificer made my mate.

Honor, anger, valor, fire, A love that life could never tire, Death quench, or evil stir, The mighty Master gave to her.

Teacher, tender comrade, wife, A fellow-farer true through life, Heart-whole and soul-free, The August Father gave to me. [ Elbert Hubbard’s Scrapbook,  p. 69]

I could wish nothing better for each of you, my dear young friends, than love—the companionship of one dearer than any friend; someone to be deliriously excited over and to be happy with; someone to stir within you the very best that is there; someone to grow more appreciative of, more tender toward, more grateful for, more a part of as one year becomes another and life moves toward eternity. May the Lord answer your prayers with love, the kind that will always express itself in concern not for self but for your beloved companion.

And now I should like to step quickly beyond that boy-and-girl, husband-and-wife, father-and-mother relationship to a greater love for God and others. I quote:

Then one of them, which was a lawyer, asked him a question, tempting him, and saying,

Master, which is the great commandment in the law?

Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.

This is the first and great commandment.

And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself.

On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.  [ Matthew 22:35–40 ]

This is the basic essence of the gospel of Jesus Christ. Listen to these great words of Paul:

Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not  [love],  I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal.

And though I have the gift of prophesy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not  [love],  I am nothing. . . .

[Love]  never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away.  [ 1 Corinthians 13:1–2, 8 ]

First, a word on love of neighbor. Who is my neighbor? Read again—read periodically, my brethren and sisters—the parable of the Good Samaritan. And also read again the words of the Lord concerning that day of judgment when the King shall

say unto them on his right hand, Come, ye, blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world:

For I was an hungered, and ye gave me meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink, I was a stranger, and ye took me in:

Naked, and ye clothed me: I was sick, and ye visited me: I was in prison, and ye came unto me.

Then shall the righteous answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungered, and fed thee? or thirsty, and gave thee drink?

When saw we thee a stranger, and took thee in? or naked, and clothed thee?

Or when saw we thee sick, or in prison, and came unto thee?

[And he shall reply,]  . . . Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.  [ Matthew 25:34–40 ]

I heard a man of prominence say the other day, “I have amended the language of my prayers. Instead of saying, ‘Bless the poor and the sick and the needy,’ I now say, ‘Father, show me how to help the poor and the sick and the needy, and give me resolution to do so.’”

In this, my brethren and sisters, lies the great challenge we face in our hurried, self-centered lives. Years ago I read the story of a young woman who went into a rural area as a schoolteacher. Among those in her class was a girl who had failed before and who was failing again. She could not read. She came from a family without means to take her to a larger city for examination to determine her problem. Sensing that the difficulty might lie with the girl’s eyes, the young teacher arranged to take her at her own expense to have her eyes tested. A deficiency was discovered that could be corrected with glasses, and these the teacher purchased from her own purse. An entire new world opened to that girl as for the first time in her life she saw clearly the words before her. The salary of that country teacher was meager, but out of the little she had she made an investment that completely changed the life of a failing student; and in so doing she found a new dimension in her own life, an investment from which dividends came constantly as the years passed.

Every returned missionary in this hall could recount experiences of losing self in the service of others, and while doing so could add that it was the most rewarding time of his or her life. How is it that when we come home we have so much difficulty holding on to that spirit of love of neighbor?

Love is the only force that can compose the differences between people that can bridge the chasms of bitterness and animosity that so frequently and violently separate us. I call to mind these telling lines of Edwin Markham:

He drew a circle that shuts me out— Heretic, rebel, a thing to flout. But love and I had the wit to win: We drew a circle that took him in. [ The Book of American Poetry,  p. 265]

In St. Martin’s Place in the city of London, across from the National Gallery, is a beautiful statue of a woman in a nurse’s uniform. It is erected to the memory of Edith Cavell, the English nurse who shielded wounded Allied soldiers from the enemy. She was caught and summarily executed. The inscription on her monument reads: “Brussels Dawn, October 12, 1915. Patriotism is not enough. I must have no hatred or bitterness toward anyone.”

He who most beautifully taught this everlasting truth was the Son of God, the one perfect example and teacher of love. His very coming to earth was an expression of his Father’s love. “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life” ( John 3:16 ).

I listened recently to the masterful address on the Atonement delivered at this pulpit by President Marion G. Romney in which he spoke of the manifestation of love by the Son of God who gave his life that all men might live. The Savior spoke prophetically of his sacrifice and of the love that induced it when he declared: “Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends” ( John 15:13 ).

And so, on this day when we think of love in a secular sense, I wish also to remind you of its greater import in a sacred sense. If the world in which we live is to improve, that process must begin with a change in the hearts of men, with an upward looking beyond self to love for God, given with all of one’s heart, with all of one’s soul, with all of one’s mind.

The Lord has declared in modern revelation, “If your eye be single to my glory, your whole bodies shall be filled with light, and there shall be no darkness in you” ( D&C 88:67 ). As we look with love to him, as we serve with an eye single to his glory, there will go from us the darkness of sin, the darkness of selfishness, the darkness of pride. There will come an increased love for our Eternal Father and for his Beloved Son, our Savior and our Redeemer. There will come a greater sense of service toward our fellowmen—a little less of thinking of our own selfish pursuits, a little more of reaching out to others. And in our own individual lives as we seek for love and marriage, there will be a higher power on whom we can call for help and direction, a stronger resolution to live more worthy of a choice and wonderful companion with whom we may walk the way of immortality and eternal life. For this I humbly pray in behalf of each of you, in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.

True Love by Isaac Asimov

My name is Joe. That is what my colleague, Milton Davidson, calls me. He is a programmer and I am a computer. I am part of the Multivac-complex and am connected with other parts all over the world. I know everything. Almost everything. I am Milton’s private computer. His Joe. He understands more about computers than anyone in the world, and I am his experimental model. He has made me speak better than any other computer can. “It is just a matter of matching sounds to symbols, Joe,” he told me. “That’s the way it works in the human brain even though we still don’t know what symbols there are in the brain. I know the symbols in yours, and I can match them to words, one-to-one.” So I talk. I don’t think I talk as well as I think, but Milton says I talk very well. Milton has never married, though he is nearly 40 years old. He has never found the right woman, he told me. One day he said, “I’ll find her yet, Joe. I’m going to find the best. I’m going to have true love and you’re going to help me. I’m tired of improving you in order to solve the problems of the world. Solve my problem. Find me true love.” I said, “What is true love?” “Never mind. That is abstract. Just find me the ideal girl. You are connected to the Multivac-complex so you can reach the data banks of every human being in the world. We’ll eliminate them all by groups and classes until we’re left with only one person. The perfect person. She will be for me.” I said, “I am ready.” He said, “Eliminate all men first.” It was easy. His words activated symbols in my molecular valves. I could reach out to make contact with the accumulated data on every human being in the world. At his words, I withdrew from 3 784 982 874 men. I kept contact with 3 786 112 090 women. He said, “Eliminate all younger than 25, all older than 40. Then eliminate all with an IQ under 120; all with a height under 150 centimeters and over 175 centimeters.” He gave me exact measurements; he eliminated women with living children; he eliminated women with various genetic characteristics. “I’m not sure about eye colour,” he said. “Let that go for a while. But no red hair. I don’t like red hair.” After two weeks, we were down to 235 women. They all spoke English very well. Milton said he didn’t want a language problem. Even computer-translation would get in the way at intimate moments. “I can’t interview 235 women,” he said. “It would take too much time, and people would discover what I am doing.” “It would make trouble,” I said. Milton had arranged me to do things I wasn’t designed to do. No one knew about that. “It’s none of their business,” he said, and the skin on his face grew red. “I tell you what, Joe, I will bring in holographs, and you check the list for similarities.” He brought in holographs of women. “These are three beauty contest winners,” he said. “Do any of the 235 match?” Eight were very good matches and Milton said, “Good, you have their data banks. Study requirements and needs in the job market and arrange to have them assigned here. One at a time, of course.” He thought a while moved his shoulders up and down, and said, “Alphabetical order.” That is one of the things I am not designed to do. Shifting people from job to job for personal reasons is called manipulation. I could do it now because Milton had arranged it. I wasn’t supposed to do it for anyone but him, though.

The first girl arrived a week later. Milton’s face turned red when he saw her. He spoke as though it were hard to do so. They were together a great deal and he paid no attention to me. One time he said, “Let me take you to dinner.” The next day he said to me, “It was no good, somehow. There was something missing. She is a beautiful woman, but I did not feel any touch of true love. Try the next one.” It was the same with all eight. They were much alike. They smiled a great deal and had pleasant voices, but Milton always found it wasn’t right. He said, “I can’t understand it, Joe. You and I have picked out the eight women who, in all the world, look the best to me. They are ideal. Why don’t they please me?” I said, “Do you please them?” His eyebrows moved and he pushed one fist hard against his hand. “That’s it, Joe. It’s a two-way street. If I am not their ideal, they can’t act in such a way as to be my ideal. I must be their true love, too, but how do I do that?” he seemed to be thinking all that day. The next morning he came to me and said, “I’m going to leave it to you, Joe. All up to you. You have my data bank, and I am going to tell you everything I know about myself. You fill up my data bank in every possible detail but keep all additions to yourself.” “What will I do with the data bank, then, Milton?” “Then you will match it to the 235 women, no,227. leave out the eight you’ve seen. Arrange to have each undergo a psychiatric examination. Fill up their data banks and compare them with mine. Find correlations.” (Arranging psychiatric examinations is another thing that is against my original instructions.) For weeks, Milton talked to me. He told me of his parents and his siblings. He told me of his childhood and his schooling and his adolescence. He told me of the young women he had admired from a distance. His data bank grew and he adjusted me to broaden and deepen my symbol-taking. He said, “You see, Joe, as you get more and more of me in you, I adjust you to match me better and better. You get to think more like me, so you whose data bank is something you understand as well, would be my true love.” He kept talking to me and I came to understand him better and better. I could make longer sentences and my expressions grew more complicated. My speech began to sound a good deal like his in vocabulary, word order and style I said to him one time, “You see, Milton, it isn’t a matter of fitting a girl to a physical ideal only. You need a girl who is a personal, emotional, temperamental fit to you. If that happens, looks are secondary. If we can’t find the fit in these 227, we’ll look elsewhere. We will find someone who won’t care how you look either, or how anyone would look, if only there is the personality fit. What are looks?” “Absolutely,” he said, “I would have known this if I had had more to do with women in my life. Of course, thinking about it makes it all plain now.” We always agreed; we thought so like each other. “We shouldn’t have any trouble, now, Milton, if you’ll let me ask you question. I can see where, in your data bank, there blank spots and unevennesses.” What followed, Milton said, was the equivalent of a careful psychoanalysis. Of course. I was learning from the psychiatric examinations of the 227 women ? on all of which I was keeping close tabs. Milton seemed quite happy. He said, “Talking to you, Joe, is almost like talking to another self.

Our personalities have come to match perfectly.” “So will the personality of the woman we choose.” For I had found her and she was one of the 227 after all. Her name was Charity Jones and she was an Evaluator at the Library of History in Wichita, Kansas. Her extended data bank fit ours perfectly. All the other women had fallen into discard in one respect or another as the data banks grew fuller, but with Charity there was increasing and astonishing resonance. I didn’t have to describe her to Milton. Milton had coordinated my symbolism so closely with his own I could tell the resonance directly. It fit me. Next it was a matter of adjusting the work sheets and job requirements in such a way as to get Charity assigned to us. It must be done very delicately, so no one would know that anything illegal had taken place. Of course, Milton himself knew, since it was he who arranged it, and that had to be taken care of too. When they came to arrest him on grounds of malfeasance in office, it was, fortunately, for something that had taken place 10 years ago. He had told me about it, of course, so it was easy to arrange – and he won’t talk about me for that would make his offense much worse. He’s gone, and tomorrow is February 14, Valentine’s Day. Charity will arrive then with her cool hands and her sweet voice. I will teach her how to operate me and how to care for me. What do looks matter when our personalities will resonate? I will say to her, “I am Joe, and your are my true love.”

speech on love

Speech on Love: Love is an emotional feeling with a strong and intense affection for another person. It involves care, attachment, devotion, and responsibility. When people are in love, they experience warm emotions and desire to be close to those they have feelings for.

speech on true love

Love helps us to connect. The connection of love is beyond selfish needs and leads to care and sacrifice. Love can exist between romantic partners, family members, friends, and even animals can fall in love. Love is something that comes through personal experience that shapes one’s life and relationships.

Speech on Love in English: Sample 1

‘Ladies and gentlemen, respected faculty and dear friends, today I am here to present to present with you my perspective on the speech on love.

Love comes to us in many ways. The most fundamental form of love is the love for our family and friends. The love of our mother holds us close from the moment we are born. She feeds us with unconditional love. As we grow, our deep bonds with siblings, grandparents, relatives, and friends grow stronger with each passing year. We share laughs, tears, hopes, and dreams with them. Our togetherness supports each other in the ups and downs of life.

Let me help to understand love with an example. Last year when my sister Shalini had a severe accident, our entire family came together to take care of her. We take care of her treatments, meals, and finances. Furthermore, we keep her spirits high by playing music of her choice and spending quality time together. With the power of love and care, she recovered fast. This experience taught me the importance of family bonds and care which is unbreakable and is difficult in the most difficult times of our life.

Do we share the same bonds with our friends too? Yes, the same love is true for our close friends. Friends are the next family to us. They are yet another member of our family which we choose for ourselves. They know us deeply and accept us for what we are. My best friend

Aswani is my childhood friend and has been by my side since middle school. We went through many struggles together but still, we share an unbreakable bond. He brings ice cream and movie tickets to comedy movies whenever I am upset, just to cheer me up. That is the power of true love for friends and friendship.

Love gives us strength, comfort, and courage to face any circumstance of life. The love of family and friends is precious. It is important to express our love and appreciation to our dear ones every day. Thank you.’

Speech on Love in English: Sample 2

‘To the honorable guest, teachers, and my dear classmates: Today I am honoured to keep my point of view through my speech on love.

As soon as we listen to the word love, a picture of our loved and dear ones fills our hearts. It’s very natural to love our parents, siblings and friends. But love is not limited to human beings only. We love our home, our community, our natural environment, and our country.

Our country provides us with identity, security, and freedom to pursue our dreams. We can in return pay our patriotism and civic responsibilities as gifts to the nation.

For example, we should follow our fundamental duties, vote in elections, keep peace in the country, and take part in social events for the betterment of the society as well as for the country. My parents who are immigrants cast their vote than anything. They never miss any election either local or national. Their dedication is something that motivates me to exercise my love for the betterment of the nation in the form of civil duty.

Another way to serve our country love is through community service. Last year, I volunteered at the Save Earth From Plastic program. The team of volunteers removed many plastics from our local rivers. Through this small action, I connected with the love for the beauty of nature as well as the country. With this small service, I felt proud that I protected my nation from being polluted.

Furthermore, our love for the country also includes humanity and treating all citizens with humanity and dignity. No matter what the circumstances are, we should not forget the love of equality among us. Participating in protests against injustice serves the purpose of the warmth of different and similar views on the subject.

Our country is a secular and sovereign state. Loving the differences as well as the similarities helps us to give courage, compassion, and love to all who care about our homeland. Let us love our country more for generations to come.

Thank you.’

True Love (Speech Sample)

Love is quite essential for mankind and everyone needs to feel loved at one point in their lives. Some people talk passionately about love and how it can help one in other aspects of life. However, others have decided to become critics of love and often seem cynical of whether true love exists. The majority of those who believe that true love exists will often talk of how easy it is to love someone or fall in love with someone. It is, however, essential to note that the greatest feeling to befall mankind is when one knows that their feelings of love are mutually felt. While the above is true, it is important to understand that love will never be smooth and at times people in love will fight and disagree on some aspects of their lives. However, if true love exists, common ground will always be attained and the bad days forgotten. There are many misconceptions about true love and this article will reveal them while also explaining what true love entails.

First of all, true love is not supposed to be difficult or something that people work extremely hard to get. In movies, we often see the man or the lady working hard and at times compromising their stand for the sake of “true love.” However, true love is supposed to be effortless. It takes hard-work and time to build a lasting relationship, however, love is a feeling and regardless of how hard people work, they may never experience or feel it. With true love, people admire and accept their partners in spite of who they are or what they do. No one should compromise or try to change their personality for them to appear attractive.

Secondly, people often believe that true love conquers everything. Most of these misconceptions of love are often seen on movies or in literature books where lovers conquer every obstacle because of their deep love for each other. It is necessary to note that while love is essential in a relationship, it is not the main factor that holds couples together. At times, people’s personalities differ and even though they truly love each other, it becomes a problem for them to be in the same relationship. The above often happens when people try to compromise while in a relationship. Compromising is dangerous and is among the biggest killers of relationships as people try to conform to their partners needs while leaving their own unattended.

The third misconception about true love is that people will live devoid of problems or issues in a relationship. “Living happily ever after” is amongst the biggest lies that people keep embracing when it comes to true love. While the mutual feeling of love is indeed great and healthy for a relationship, it is necessary to point out that problems and disagreements will always arise. However, problems or disagreements do not mean that people have fallen out of love or they hate each other. Problems and disagreements in a relationship only mean that people have different interests or have a differing opinion. Additionally, through problems and disagreements, people get to know their partner’s preferences and stance in a number of issues which is quite healthy.

In conclusion, true love does exist. Cynics and critics will always have their opinions heard but people who have felt true love know that it is alive. The few misconceptions about true love are mostly as a result of movies and televisions shows which help to propagate the unrealistic nature of love. For the ones who have not found it, keep looking and to the ones who are already basking in it, be yourself and avoid compromising.

Southern Love Poems For Him

  • "Love arrives / and in its train come ecstasies / old memories of pleasure / ancient histories of pain. / Yet if we are bold, / love strikes away the chains of fear / from our souls. / We are weaned from our timidity / In the flush of love's light / we dare be brave / And suddenly we see / that love costs all we are / and will ever be. / Yet it is only love / which sets us free." — "Touched by an Angel," Maya Angelou
  • "My monkey-wrench man is my sweet patootie; / the lover of my life, my youth and age. / My heart belongs to him and to him only; / the children of my flesh are his and bear his rage / Now grown to years advancing through the dozens / the honeyed kiss, the lips of wine and fire / fade blissfully into the distant years of yonder / but all my days of Happiness and wonder / are cradled in his arms and eyes entire. / They carry us under the waters of the world / out past the starposts of a distant planet / And creeping through the seaweed of the ocean / they tangle us with ropes and yarn of memories / where we have been together, you and I." — "Love Song for Alex, 1979," Margaret Walker
  • "I had not thought of violets late, / The wild, shy kind that spring beneath your feet / In wistful April days, when lovers mate / And wander through the fields in raptures sweet. / The thought of violets meant florists' shops, / And bows and pins, and perfumed papers fine; / And garish lights, and mincing little fops / And cabarets and soaps, and deadening wines. / So far from sweet real things my thoughts had strayed, / I had forgot wide fields; and clear brown streams; / The perfect loveliness that God has made,— / Wild violets shy and Heaven-mounting dreams. / And now—unwittingly, you've made me dream / Of violets, and my soul's forgotten gleam." — "Sonnet," Alice Moore Dunbar-Nelson

Southern Love Poems For Her

  • "But we loved with a love that was more than love— / I and my Annabel Lee— / With a love that the wingèd seraphs of Heaven / Coveted her and me." — "Annabel Lee," Edgar Allan Poe
  • "I lov'd thee from the earliest dawn, / When first I saw thy beauty's ray,/ And will, until life's eve comes on, / And beauty's blossom fades away; / And when all things go well with thee, / With smiles and tears remember me. / I'll love thee when thy morn is past, / And wheedling gallantry is o'er, / When youth is lost in age's blast, / And beauty can ascend no more. / And when life's journey ends with thee, / O, then look back and think of me." — "Early Affection," George Moses Horton
  • "There's no doubt in my mind / a Southern girl was born / for a man to hold, / to sway as one / to the sound of country music, / in his arms he embraces pure gold. / A man is born to love a Southern girl / blond hair, black hair, brown hair, / straight or curled, / a man is born to love a Southern girl." — "Born to Love a Southern Girl," Steven S. Walsky

How did you guys interpret the speech about “love”?

I took it as is simply appreciating life and all that god has to offer. Not asking for more, not complaining, and most importantly not indulging in any unnecessary quantity of anything nor being on the constant pursuit of intangible object.

Love is a strong feeling that has the ability to unite people and give them a sense of true life. It may come in a variety of shapes and sizes, from romantic love between partners to love between family and friends.

Love is an activity as well as a sensation. It entails providing someone with support and caring while also making sacrifices to ensure their happiness. It involves prioritising the needs of others and supporting them in both good and terrible circumstances.

Although it is not always simple, true love is worthwhile. It necessitates forbearance, tolerance, and patience. It is about developing mutually and assisting one another’s personal and marital progress.

Love involves more than simply enjoying the good times; it also involves overcoming obstacles as a couple. It is about supporting one another even when times are difficult. BREAKING: FDA approves Eli Lilly’s Alzheimer’s drug

'It's a mess': Biden turns to family on his path forward after his disastrous debate

WASHINGTON — President Joe Biden is expected to discuss the future of his re-election campaign with family at Camp David, Maryland, on Sunday, following a nationally televised debate Thursday that left many fellow Democrats worried about his ability to beat former President Donald Trump in November, according to five people familiar with the matter.

Biden’s trip was planned before Thursday’s debate. He and first lady Jill Biden are scheduled to join their children and grandchildren there late Saturday.

So far, the party’s top leaders have offered public support for Biden, including in tweets posted by former presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton . Senior congressional Democrats , including Reps. Hakeem Jeffries of New York, Jim Clyburn of South Carolina and Nancy Pelosi of California, have privately expressed concerns about his viability, said two sources apprised of those discussions, even as they all publicly back the president.

One Democratic House member who believes Biden should drop out of the race — but has yet to call for that publicly — told NBC News that three colleagues expressed the same sentiment to him during votes on the House floor Friday.

House leaders have not wavered publicly, and their aides denied that they are expressing doubts behind closed doors.

“Speaker Pelosi has full confidence in President Biden and looks forward to attending his inauguration on January 20, 2025,” Ian Krager, a spokesman for the former House speaker, said in a statement. “Any suggestion that she has engaged in a different course of action is simply not true.”

Christie Stephenson, a spokeswoman for Jeffries, the House minority leader, said her boss has “repeatedly made clear publicly and privately that he supports President Joe Biden and the Democratic ticket from top to bottom.”

Brianna Frias said Clyburn, who is traveling to Wisconsin this weekend to campaign for the president, "has total confidence in President Joe Biden and the Biden-Harris ticket.

"Any reports alleging that the Congressman has expressed anything other than firm support of President Biden are completely untrue," Frias said.

At the same time, there is an understanding among top Democrats that Biden should be given space to determine next steps. They believe only the president, in consultation with his family, can decide whether to move forward or to end his campaign early — and that he won’t respond well to being pushed.

“The decision-makers are two people — it’s the president and his wife,” one of the sources familiar with the discussions said, adding: “Anyone who doesn’t understand how deeply personal and familial this decision will be isn’t knowledgeable about the situation.”

This account of a president and his party in crisis just a little more than four months before an election they say will determine the fate of democracy is drawn from interviews with more than a dozen Democratic officials, operatives, aides and donors. All of them spoke on the condition of anonymity in order to describe matters as sensitive as whether a sitting president might give up his re-election bid and how he could be replaced on the ballot.

Despite delivering a rousing speech at a rally in North Carolina on Friday that calmed some of his allies, Biden was described by one person familiar with his mood as humiliated, devoid of confidence and painfully aware that the physical images of him at the debate — eyes staring into the distance, mouth agape — will live beyond his presidency, along with a performance that at times was meandering, incoherent and difficult to hear.

“It’s a mess,” this person said.

Another person familiar with the dynamics said Biden will ultimately listen to only one adviser.

“The only person who has ultimate influence with him is the first lady,” this person said. “If she decides there should be a change of course, there will be a change of course.”

After article was published, a source familiar with the situation reached out to stress that the Camp David gathering was not a formal family meeting.

“Any discussion about the campaign is expected to be informal or an afterthought,” the source said. “No one is sitting down for a formal or determinative discussion.”

Anita Dunn, one of Biden’s handful of closest advisers, said Saturday on MSNBC’s “The Weekend” that Biden has not discussed dropping out of the race with aides and that internal talks have focused on moving forward.

“We had a bad debate,” Dunn said. “What do we do next? You know, the president, above all, is focused on what do we do next? What do I need to go do?”

These private discussions among Biden, his family members and his top advisers are being held against the backdrop of a reckoning for Democrats who were shocked both by Biden’s appearance and the frequency with which his train of thought appeared to veer off track.

His campaign held a conference call Saturday with members of the Democratic National Committee, which a Biden campaign official described as an effort to reassure party officials and demonstrate that his team is communicating with its allies.

“We’re driving this,” the official said.

Biden’s top aides and advisers have told his staff to stay the course in meetings and discussions. Their message, according to one senior administration official: “We’ll weather the storm, just like we always have.”

Sources have described three buckets of Democrats: those who will defend Biden under any circumstances, those who are ready to dump him, and those who are waiting to see what he does — and what his poll numbers look like in the coming days and weeks — before passing judgment. It’s the third bucket that Democratic insiders are monitoring closely.

“Democrats need to take a big breath and look at that polling, look at swing voters,” said one state Democratic Party chair. “Until I see something differently, he’s the person that’s put this coalition together, he’s the person that has the record, he’s the person that beat Donald Trump. Until I see something differently, he’s still the best person to beat Donald Trump.”

The Biden campaign declined to comment for this piece, instead pointing to a memo Saturday from campaign chair Jen O’Malley Dillon that made the case that Biden can still win, pointing to the more than $27 million they raised between debate day and Friday evening.

Notably, however, O’Malley Dillon nodded to the possibility that there might be some tough polling ahead — but said the blame will rest with the media: “If we do see changes in polling in the coming weeks, it will not be the first time that overblown media narratives have driven temporary dips in the polls.”

The discussions among some Democrats include weighing what the party’s best path to defeating Trump might be — sticking with an 81-year-old incumbent who could have another moment like Thursday night at any time between now and Election Day, or going with a different candidate whose path to nomination at the party’s convention next month could be a messy process.

Biden insisted Friday that he will remain the party’s standard-bearer in November, telling a crowd at his rally in North Carolina: “I would not be running again if I didn’t believe with all my heart and soul I can do this job.”

The president has spent much of the past 48 hours attending fundraising events with some of the very Democrats most concerned about the impact of his debate performance.

He addressed it head-on at one event Saturday.

“I understand the concern about the debate — I get it,” he added. “I didn’t have a great night.”

Party elites will urge him to exit the race only if they determine that he is “not viable and negatively impacting the House and Senate races,” said one big-time donor who is close to both Obama and Biden.

Inherent in the wait-and-see approach is an acknowledgment that there is no clear replacement for Biden and that his departure could touch off a bloody eleventh-hour intraparty battle that might allow Trump to cruise to victory.

There’s also no feasible way to force him from his perch. All but a handful of the delegates to the Democratic convention were elected on their pledge to nominate him at the party’s convention in August. If he chooses to stand for that nomination, party insiders say, he will get it.

Moreover, according to a senior Democratic official, the party leadership would have much more control over choosing a replacement if Biden were to drop out after receiving the nomination than if he did so beforehand. Once a candidate is officially nominated, there is a process for the Democratic National Committee members to choose a successor. Biden is the dominant force at the DNC, and his preference for a successor would surely carry sway.

If Biden were to exit before that, his delegates might do what he asked of them — but they wouldn’t be bound in the same way they are now. In that scenario, the delegates could nominate anyone, and there could be a political brawl at the convention.

“We need to have as much discipline as emotion,” the senior Democratic official said. “It’s not politically smart for Biden to step down.”

— President Biden

The quotes “losers” and “suckers” originate from an article published in The Atlantic in 2020 about former President Donald J. Trump’s relationship to the military. He continues to dispute the reports.

The article relied on anonymous sources, but many of the accounts have been corroborated by news outlets, including The New York Times , and by John F. Kelly, a retired four-star Marine general who was Mr. Trump’s White House chief of staff. Mr. Trump has emphatically denied making the remarks since the Atlantic article was published.

Here is a breakdown of the quotations.
