Traveling in India: A Truly Life Changing Experience

“ India will change you forever” , I would hear over and over again as soon as we announced we would travel to India. “ Really?” , I thought incredulously, “ what could possibly have such an impact on me there?” I had traveled through Central America and South East Asia, and had encountered extreme poverty, dysfunctional cities, violence and fear. I didn’t think that anything could still shock me after the things I had already seen, from the child beggars in Guatemala to the limping stray dogs in Nicaragua and the in-your-face sex tourism in Cambodia.

But nothing prepares you for India. Nothing prepares you for the intense smells, the chaos that ensues when a herd of cows decides to take a stroll along a busy highway, the crazy traffic and the constant honking, the homeless people sleeping on sidewalks, not dozens, but hundreds of them, or the dead bodies you’ll see. You can’t block out the begging ladies who seem a hundred years old and look at you with those heartbreakingly sad eyes while they shyly beg you for money with their palms pleadingly open, and by the village kids that run around dirt roads in just underwear and without shoes because they don’t have anything.

Village life in India

India is a lot to take in. And India is hard to take. Even though you might read this now thinking ‘I feel like I know what to expect when I go there’, when you get there, India will knock you off your feet.

I might have painted a pretty bleak picture of India so far, so let me correct this. I did not hate India – quite on the contrary: I loved traveling in India. While many scenes you’ll experience in on a daily basis – the countless stray animals, the beggars, the crazy train rides, the deformations on people’s bodies – are hard to digest, especially in such a huge concentration, there are equally as many things that will amaze you.

The incredibly diverse scenery for one, which ranges from deserts and mountains in the north to tropical beaches in Goa and the barren moon-like scenery around Hampi. The ornate, grand and mystifying temples, the scrumptious food that bursts with flavors, the wonderfully welcoming people were all things that made me fall in love with India.

Beautiful India

Some travelers find it annoying to be stared at or even have their hair touched, but I have to say that I was equally as enticed by the large families I met. Especially the women, all dressed up in colorful saris, painted with henna tattoos, wearing golden little jewels or bindis on their foreheads, and eye-catching golden jewelry hanging from their wrists, necks and sometimes noses, fascinated me just as much as I fascinated them, the light skinned girl with the bright blonde hair. While they wanted to feel my ‘yellow’ hair, I wanted to run my fingers through their thick black hair. The timid smiles and curious looks, and how we tried to communicate despite their limited English to find out more about each others lives are encounters I wouldn’t want to miss.

One of the most rewarding experiences in India: getting to know the locals

Traveling India will change your perspective on the smallest details in your own life. For one, I just cannot complain about anything in my life anymore – no matter how hard something might seem in a specific moment, I am blessed with a great life, a passport that lets me travel anywhere in the world without any bureaucratic hassle – the fact alone that I am able to travel!

Seeing the families in Hampi , a sacred site for Hindus which they are supposed to visit at least once in their lives, who have never left their village before but saved every penny to could to make the trip there, sleeping in the streets and living off cheap street food, made me feel ashamed about my complaints about the too thin mattress on the bed in our basic yet clean $3 per night guesthouse. Back home in their villages these pilgrims usually don’t have running water or a solid, concreted floor in their house. Everywhere I traveled in India I saw women with big buckets on their heads, on their way to a well to get the water they needed to do laundry and dishes.

People of India

When I was stuck on an overcrowded train that for the first time I realized what cattle class actually means, with one person in our group in tears and the rest of us on the verge of them, I couldn’t help but think “ I am so glad that I don’t have to do that every day” . But it is the reality for hundreds of millions of Indians. I watched women doing dishes and laundry in dirty river water where at the same time an elephant released himself while being bathed; men were shaving and women washing their hair, because this natural ‘pool’ is the only ‘tub’ they have.

And there I was, complaining that our guesthouse didn’t have hot water. These things just stick with you, and you’ll never take anything for granted anymore: running water, hot water, a toilet with a flush button instead of a bucket of water to flush with, and being able to drink water from a tap. Comfy beds, a kitchen, a washing machine, a dish washer and other appliances seem somewhat absurd after what you see in India.

Traveling in India changes your perspective on everything, and makes the things you complain about in your daily life seem pretty laughable. I came back a different person than the one I was before, and I can’t wait to go back to India. Because if you are willing to put up with the strenuous aspects of the country, you’ll be rewarded with the most memorable travel experience of your life.

I migrated to US from India in 1998, I was 26 at that time, I had been back to india, several times, but only for a couple of weeks at a time. In April of 2022, after losing my mother, had lost my father already in 2005, I visited India, and planned to stay there for a couple of months. But I had similar experienxe as other travelers here, and ended up staying there for 13 months. Although I am originally for Delhi, but in my trip I traveled to places where I had not been before. That trip changed me forever, now I am back in US, but I am planning to move back to India permanently in few years.

Thanks for such a good article. I heard the same comment from my other international friends also. I an Indian, but being an Indian hardly we see the India. Sometime I get to know new facts about India from international friends or the travel blogs.I m from middle part of India near Mumbai and I can say that I don't know much about cultural stuff of North East India or Extreme North West part.

When I do travel in India I do face problems in Language, food and Cultural differences. Everytime there will be new learning from me.

Different Regions of India

North region.

Essay on My Trip for Class 3

‘My trip started with me and my family making a list of necessary items and packing our stuff. Me and my family went on a 4-day trip to Udaipur, the city of lakes. This city has a total of 7 lakes, out of which, Lake Pichola is the most beautiful one. My father booked a suite for us, where we stayed. 

As always, my restless sister and I started exploring the hotel. We saw the beautiful swimming pool, played water sports, and ate a lot of Indian food. I enjoyed the Dal Bhaati Churma.

Then we visited the Jagdish temple, which was located just outside the royal palace. It is an architectural marvel and is listed among the top monuments in India. 

Last but not least, we went boating on Lake Pichola, which was the most beautiful moment of my entire trip. We rented a motor boat, where our guide told us everything about the city, its history, and how it has because a tourism hub. 

My trip to Udaipur was a magical experience. Every moment of my trip is a cherished memory that I will never forget. Traveling with my family was so much fun.’

‘When I was in Class 5, we went on a school trip to Rishikesh, the famous hill station. My mother packed all my important things and told me to follow everything my teacher told me. It was a 3-day trip, where we had a lot of fun, ate delicious food, played games on the riverside, did rafting, bonfire and jungle-adventure.

We visited the hotel in the early morning and were served with delicious breakfast. After breakfast, we visited the famous Lakshman Jhula, located on the Ganges River. This Jhula is used by pedestrians to cross the river and visit the other side of the city.

The next thing we did was rafting. There were rafting boats, and we were provided with life jackets, helmets, and wetsuits. We were given clear instructions not directly to jump into the river and stay in the boat. It was really fun and a completely different experience for me.

Then we had our lunch and sat down near the river, where we talked with locals. We learned about the history of this beautiful city. Our guide took us to the nearby waterfall, where we played water sports and enjoyed a lot. 

Lastly, we all sat in a circle around a bonfire and listened to the beautiful stories from our teachers and guides. 

While we were packing our stuff and leaving the hotel, we were offered souvenirs and holy prasad by the hotel staff. This trip was full of adventure, spirituality, and beautiful moments with my friends.’

‘My favorite trip was to Kashmir, called ‘Paradise on Earth’. It is an Indian Union Territory, located in Northern India. There were breathtaking views, serene lakes, and snow-capped mountains. It was like I was in heaven.

We traveled by train, where we enjoyed the winding green valleys and beautiful waterfall. Firstly, we explored the Mughal Gardens. There were terraces arranged near the water channel, fountains lined, and various types of flowers and trees planted. 

We explored the famous Dal Lake, which is a natural wetland with floating gardens. My father rented a houseboat, locally known as ‘Shikhara’ where we had our lunch and enjoyed the boating experience. It was like a fairy world, where everything was calm as a bright blue sky.

Our next destination was Gurmarg, which is famous for its snow-covered landscapes. The scenic beauty of the Himalayan Mountains in the backdrop was like an additional adventure to our trip. Me and my brother enjoyed Skiing at the Apharwat Peak. My father is a golf fan, so he played golf at the Gulmarg Golf Course, close to our hotel.

After skiing, we were so hungry that my brother and I ate a hearty meal to recover our exhausted energy. We were so exhausted that we slept for 4 hours. When we woke up, we witnessed snow for the first time. We made a snowman and played Tic-Tac-Toe using sticks.

My Trip to India

In the summer of 2005, I went on a once in a lifetime adventure to India. I am of Indian decent but I was born in the United States. I wear American clothes, eat American food, and do what the average American does. I didn’t really know too much about Indian culture except for the fact that they made their food so spicy, I would need a whole jug of water to get rid of the taste. I also knew that Indian clothes are unique and designer. My parents always tried to tell me how rich Indian traditions were, but I was never able to comprehend. I finally understood my precious culture when I attended my uncle’s traditional wedding. It was a normal school day when my mom told me the great news. As soon as I came home she ran up to me and shrieked, “We’re going to India!” “Why?” I asked. She replied, “Uncle Akbar is getting married.” I was thrilled and excited. I had never been to a traditional Indian wedding, and since he is my favorite and close uncle, I was allowed to help prepare for this festive occasion along with my other family members. I couldn’t wait to go to Hyderabad (my family’s hometown) and participate in the wedding. I would have never known that this special event would help me understand age-old traditions which my parents always talked about. The preparations for the extravaganza were already underway even before we all landed in India. Members from both sides of the family were busy looking for reception halls, hairstylists, and the latest designer clothes for the wedding. Uncle Akbar put me in charge of finding the wedding dress for the bride since I was said to have “a taste in fashion.” A few days after being in Hyderabad, the whole family went to Mumbai to choose the final dress for the bride. All the women went to a lot of boutiques and by the end of the afternoon I felt like I was going to drop dead. We finally entered a boutique called “Queens Bridal Showroom.” The workers showed us a lot of dresses. (The Indian name for a dress is “sari”) There were many design and color choices. I was starting to give up on the showrooms until I saw the ideal dress for the bride. It was bright pink with a very big, gold border. It was also adorned with gold flowers and leaves. As soon as the bride laid eyes on the dress I chose for her she said, “Peenaz, it’s absolutely perfect! I am going to try it on right now.” When she came out of the fitting room and stepped into the light, she looked like a queen indeed. I also helped the bride find her reception dress. It was blue and green with multi-colored stones and beads. A worker told us it was the newest designer piece and was the latest style out there. My mom, the bride, and I quickly paid for the dresses and ran out to find matching purses and shoes. By the end of the day, we were all set and ready to leave for Hyderabad where the wedding was to take place. After a month of intense preparation and making sure everything was flawless, the wedding day finally arrived. In the afternoon, all the close guests and relatives were invited to my grandma’s apartment to perform the traditional wedding ceremony called “Nikah.” This was when my uncle and the bride would exchange vows and become husband and wife. When the bride came inside the room wearing the bright pink sari I chose for her, all the guests stared in awe. Before sitting at her place she gave me a big smile. I beamed back because I knew I was responsible for making her a gorgeous bride. After the traditions and ceremonies, it was time for the reception party! It was at the Sheraton Hotel and it was amazing. At the party, my aunt wore the blue and green dress I picked out. She looked like she came out of a catalog. The reception was very fun; we ate, danced, and cut a very big cake. The family agreed that the wedding was huge success and everyone participated in something that helped the wedding a memorable one. I realized that my adventure to India and my uncle’s wedding inspired me and helped me understand Indian traditions. Because I was a part of this occasion, I learned so much about how an Indian society works. I was very proud that I was in charge for the bride’s dresses because it gave me a sense of responsibility and appreciation for my culture. I realized the Indian culture isn’t just about spicy food and clothes; there is so much more to the age-old traditions that were followed, and will continue to be followed from one generation to the next. My uncle’s wedding helped me comprehend all the traditions my parents used to tell me about because I actually experienced them myself. Now it is safe to say that I am an Indian because I know about their customs and practices. I can also say that the trip to India transformed me from an American girl to an American girl who is proud and aware of her cultural backgrounds.

Peering out of the international terminal window, I gaped at the colossal Boeing-747 plane standing in front of me, with not just one floor but two floors of seats. All buzzed up in excitement, I bombarded my father with questions about my first real trip to India. I say my first real trip because the first time I had been there was when I was an infant, probably being passed around and adored by countless relatives. “When are we leaving? When will we get there? Where are we staying?” I pestered my father, which got the usual response of “I’ll tell you in a bit.” This was the mark of my first summer vacation as a teenager, and what better place to go than to Madras, India to visit my relatives and catch a glimpse of a staggering large and different culture? I did not know what to expect traveling to my parent’s home country but I knew it would be an experience that would be hard to forget. What really stood out in my mind were the overpopulation and the poverty levels.

As we boarded the plane the Lufthansa flight I was struck with the hard to miss smell of an airplane which, surprisingly, as a kid I thoroughly enjoyed. The first leg of the trip was to Frankfurt, Germany, and then we connected to a flight to Madras, India, the latter plane flight taking thirteen of the twenty-four hours of flying. As we prepared for landing I felt like I had traveled to the other side of the world, and I truly did figuratively and literally. Nearly the second my foot stopped out of the plane into to the gate I was suffocating. The temperature had to be at least 100 degrees Fahrenheit, and what made it worse was the humidity. I literally had sweated off a pound by the time we reached the excruciatingly long immigration and customs line. This line was so crowded that it would probably be more fitting to refer to it as an enormous glob of people rather than a line. What made it frightening was that my brother and I nearly lost sight of my parents numerous times.

Fortunately, after waiting for more than an hour to clear all the people past immigration, my family proceeded down to the luggage carousel. From what I saw, the carousel gave me no inclination to that we were in an airport rather than a carnival. Once again there were hundreds perhaps thousands of people around five conveyor belts all trying to get to their luggage which hasn’t even arrived yet. After my dad emerged from the mass of people with our luggage on a cart, we were immediately surrounded by men in turbans offering to help carry the bags on their heads for a nominal fee. It was an impressive sight seeing them juggle forty-pound suitcases on their head, but regardless we had a cart for our suitcases. Amusingly, this did not deter them one bit, they literally would not take no for an answer. I actually had to pry my own luggage from their thick leathery hands. This was funny to me at first but I realized that this was their job and it blew my mind that people would actually do this for a living.

Upon stepping out of the airport, I immediately noticed at least ten soldiers carrying the largest guns I had ever seen in my life, slung across their neck, and telling jokes to each other as if this was a common sight. Behind the soldiers there was once again a tremendously long line of people lined up behind a small metal railing that I suppose was to hold them back from coming inside to the airport. Each one of them was shouting the names of their relatives, waiting and hoping to see if they had arrived. We finally spotted my uncle, whom was wearing a nice polo shirt and some slacks, and proceeded to his Mitsubishi Lancer car. The driver, Bala, an old man probably in his sixties packed our luggage in random spots and corners in the car, and set off into downtown Madras.

This was the first time a driver chauffeured me around and the car trip was extremely fun, although I’m sure it was partly due to the air conditioning. We whizzed past cars, massive trucks carrying barrels of hay, tractors pulled by the cows and even bicyclists on the highway. The car ride really gave me the first glimpse of India and how different the place really is compared to the U.S. Amazingly, it was 6.00 A.M in the morning and there were traffic jams at many street corners. This surprised me. I did not expect India to be this crowded, and I could barely imagine what it would be like in the during morning rush.

Halfway through the trip, we drove through the slum part of Madras because the airport is on the outskirts of the city. Most of the slums are located in Anna Nagar, which translates to little brother city. We slowed down considerably here because the roads were unpaved and merely consisted of dirt and cobblestone rocks. The number of people also increased staggeringly when we entered the slums.
