Each application can include not just a resume and cover letter but links to the candidate’s online portfolio, LinkedIn profile, or personal website. Hiring managers are also increasingly expected to look up candidates’ online presence for more background and any red flags.

In this environment, it’s harder to hold a hiring manager’s attention. If they’re at all unsure about your application, they’ll just move on to the next one. So the key to a good modern resume is making it concise. Virtually any resume today has one core (unstated) message: “I can excel in the position you’re looking to fill.” The more you focus on that message, and the more quickly you get it across, the better luck you’ll have landing interviews for your target job.

Below you’ll find tips on keeping your resume concise so it performs well in the modern job search.

  • Entry-level
  • Senior-level

Entry-level

1. Write a dynamic profile summarizing your qualifications

In a brief paragraph or bullet list at the top of your resume, catch hiring managers’ attention by giving the three to five main reasons you can excel in your target job. These may come from your work history or another area of your background, such as education or volunteer experience. A good profile makes the hiring manager’s job easier by letting them see your top qualifications in just a few seconds. That way, they don’t have to read the whole document to know you fit the role.

(Note, most job seekers find it easier to write their profile last.)

Entry-Level Profile Example

Hardworking Management Consultant who is an IT expert and former systems analyst with an MBA in Business Technology Management from Carnegie Mellon University. Recognized for work speed, quality, and reliability at both McKinsey and Highmark.

Mid-Career Profile Example

Occupational therapist with nearly seven years of experience in a hospital setting. Committed to helping patients regain independence and navigate a smooth return to daily life following recovery from illness, injury, or major surgery. Build productive relationships with nurses, providers, case managers, physical therapists, and respiratory therapists. Expertly balance various duties and priorities in a fast-paced health care environment.

2. Add a results-focused professional experience section

One of the fastest ways to impress hiring managers on your resume is by giving examples of your success in the type of role you’re seeking. Detailed examples help employers visualize the impact you’d have on their organization.

For each job in your recent work history , brainstorm your duties, projects, and achievements on a separate document. Then, choose the most relevant ones to feature in your experience section, setting them off as bullet points. Be ruthless about omitting details that don’t speak to your target job, even if they’re recent or objectively impressive. By leaving out unnecessary info, you’ll keep your experience section concise and focused on points that quickly connect with the hiring manager’s needs.

Mid-Career Professional Experience Example

Occupational Therapist, NY-Presbyterian Hospital, New York, NY | April 2019 to present

  • Guide patients through ADLs such as bathing, dressing, and food preparation to support recovery and gauge readiness for discharge from hospital
  • Collaborate with physical therapist to help determine and recommend the next phase of each patient’s recovery, drawing on broad knowledge of available rehab, home health, and other services
  • Recommend appropriate DME such as wheelchairs, walkers, and leg braces
  • Praised by colleagues and managers for outstanding efficiency, collaboration, and dedication to patient outcomes

Senior-Level Professional Experience Example

Chief Operating Officer (COO), YCW Corp., San Diego, CA | October 2017 to Present

  • Guided a cost reduction initiative that raised the company’s bottom line by $700K in 6 months
  • Built productive partnerships with senior leaders of five major departments
  • Drove five successful change initiatives to create a more inventive and collaborative work culture

3. Include your education and relevant certifications

Aside from basic details on any college degree(s) you’ve earned, only add information that relates to your current career goals. The purpose of these sections is to show you have plenty of knowledge about the role the hiring manager wants to fill, more than general insights.

For each degree or certification you include, add the acronym in parentheses, e.g., “Master of Business Administration (MBA).” Acronyms make it easier for hiring managers to quickly register your credentials when they’re first looking over your resume.

Below are templates and examples to help you format your education and certification details. Note, optional template areas appear in [brackets].

  • Degree Name — [Major, Minor], School Name, City, ST or online | [Year]
  • [Select Coursework]

Master of Science (MS) – Occupational Therapy, Columbia University, New York, NY | 2015

Certification

  • Certification Name or Title, [Awarding Organization] | [Year]
  • [Description]
  • Certified Management Consultant (CMC), Institute of Management Consultants | 2016

4. List key skills and proficiencies

Add a key skills section to show the various ways you can contribute to your target job. These may include your soft and hard skills or specific products or programs you’re versed in. Like the profile, this section should give hiring managers an overview of your top selling points so they can quickly see if your application is worth a closer look.

Below are some common skills and keywords to consider for your resume:

Key Skills and Proficiencies
Business needs assessment Client satisfaction and retention
Complex problem-solving Cost reduction and elimination
Cross-team collaboration Efficiency improvement
Inventory management Lean manufacturing
Market strategy development Microsoft Office Suite
Process streamlining Project and program management
Quality assurance Reporting and documentation
Revenue and profit growth Risk management and mitigation
Staff training and development Stakeholder relations
Strategic business development Talent hiring and retention
Task prioritization Team leadership and motivation
Time management Vendor contract negotiations

How To Pick the Best Modern Resume Template

In keeping with a concise approach, choose a simple template that lets the hiring manager quickly spot your best career details. Select a clear resume font , and avoid any template with a colorful or elaborate design. The more complicated your layout, the less likely it’ll be to keep the reader’s interest. Also, ensure the template complies with applicant tracking systems (ATS) used by employers to screen resumes.

Frequently Asked Questions: Modern Resume Examples and Advice

What are common action verbs for modern resumes -.

One of the best ways to enhance your resume is by starting each bullet point with a strong action verb. These help you keep the hiring manager’s attention and reflect the dynamic nature of your experience. The best verbs will show your having created or improved things in past positions.

The following list can help you find a good mix of verbs for your resume:

Action Verbs
Automated Averted
Coordinated Created
Decreased Developed
Eliminated Enhanced
Expedited Garnered
Generated Improved
Increased Introduced
Launched Lowered
Organized Prevented
Produced Raised

How do you align your modern resume with a job posting? -

First, look closely at the job post text and highlight words that are repeated, emphasized, or otherwise seem important. Compare these highlighted phrases to the language you’re using in your resume, particularly the profile and key skills sections. Then seek ways to align your resume language with the job post while not copying phrases or misstating your background.

For example, say the company seeks someone collaborative. Emphasize that part of your experience in your profile with a line like “Thrive in collaborative work settings” or in your key skills section with a term like “cross-team collaboration.” Or say the company has many non-English speaking customers. Highlight your foreign language skills both in your profile and as a separate section farther down the document.

Also, consider adding brief descriptions of the places you’ve worked in [brackets] right next to or below the company name. Company descriptions let you show any similarities between your past employers and the one who posted the job. For example, maybe you’ve worked for companies of a similar size or industry. Or maybe you’ve worked at organizations with a similar mission or leadership philosophy. By adding these details to your descriptions, you can make your resume more relevant to the job opening at hand.

What is the best modern resume format? -

Most job seekers today should use the combination (or hybrid) format. True to its name, this format combines two features of traditional resume formats: the chronological format’s experience section and the functional format’s profile section. (The resume examples on this page all use combination format.)

By fusing these two features, a combination resume offers the best of both worlds. The experience section lets you outline your recent work history – essential information for most employers. At the same time, the profile section lets you display your career highlights at the top, regardless if they’re from that work history or another part of your background. As a result, you can present yourself clearly and strategically. With this format, you give hiring managers the best view of your experience and relevant strengths, so they can make an informed decision to call you for an interview.

6 Reasons to Choose a Modern Resume Template

Using a modern resume template is going to put you miles ahead of someone with the age-old black-and-white traditional format. Here are the top 8 reasons why modern templates are so effective these days:

  • Eye-Catching Design. Unlike the traditional black-and-white resumes, modern templates are created with the intent of catching the recruiter’s attention.
  • Easy to Follow Layout. Modern templates are structured in such a way that the most important information goes on top of the resume.
  • ATS-Friendly Format . Modern resume templates are built with ATS in mind. This means they’re unlikely to get rejected by applicant tracking systems.
  • Trendy Looks. The hiring manager will know that you’re the type of candidate who keeps up with new trends.
  • Resume Builder Option . Some modern resume templates, like the ones by Novovresume, are offered via a resume builder, a type of software that makes the resume creation process much faster and easier.
  • Preferred by Top Companies. Want to work in a cutting-edge company like Tesla, Apple, or Google? You’ll need a resume that’ll catch their attention.

Features of a Modern Resume Template

Unlike traditional resumes, modern designs are more personalized, allowing candidates to express their creativity.

Here are some of the features that immediately define a modern resume template:

One thing all modern resume templates have in common is that they don’t hold back when it comes to design.

Some are very minimalistic, with subtle use of colors and fonts that make them look clean and perfectly structured, while others use bold colors, shapes, and visuals to make an impression.

No matter your personal preferences, you can always tell a modern resume template from its absolutely eye-catching design.

#2. Colors

Modern resume templates typically use matching color palettes to highlight different resume sections, create structure, or simply add more flair to your resume.

Depending on your field, you can opt for a modern resume template with bright and flashy colors or for one that takes advantage of sophisticated pastels and gradients.

Fonts are a big part of the design, so they are obviously an important feature when it comes to modern resume templates.

Forget your mainstream Times New Roman and Roboto fonts – some of the most eye-catching modern resume templates on our list above leverage the power of alternative fonts and creative placement to stand out from the crowd.

#4. White Spaces

Due to their smart design, modern resume templates often feature plenty of white space around and in between resume sections.

This makes them look well-structured, clean, and very reader-friendly.

#5. Creative Section Headings

Instead of using slightly bigger font sizes to separate section headings, modern resume templates usually feature creative section headings that include icons, fonts, and alternative placement.

Section headings are essential if you want a well-organized and reader-friendly resume, which is why we love this modern resume feature.

#6. Easy to read

The best modern resume templates will be easy to read due to their great design and effective use of space and colors.

By maintaining the same style, fonts, and structure throughout the resume, recruiters can find and scan information without getting lost in a sea of information.

Key Takeaways

And that sums up our listicle of the top modern resume templates out there! Before you go, though, here’s a quick recap of what we’ve covered in this article:

  • Using a modern resume template makes you stand out from the rest of the competition.

What Makes a Modern Resume?

A resume is not just a piece of paper that highlights your professional experiences, education, and skills. It is a marketing tool that showcases your unique value proposition to potential employers. Therefore, it’s important to craft a resume that stands out from the crowd while staying relevant to the current job market.

A modern resume is different from a traditional one in the following ways:

Characteristics that differentiate a modern resume from a traditional one:

Clear and concise: A modern resume is typically no longer than two pages, focusing on the most important aspects of your career instead of drowning the reader with excessive details.

Visual elements: Modern resumes incorporate visual design elements, such as icons, charts, and graphs, to increase readability and showcase your creativity.

Relevant keywords: As many recruiters use automated screening software, a modern resume is optimized for the relevant keywords that match the job description.

Soft skills: Modern resumes emphasize soft skills, such as communication, collaboration, and problem-solving, as they are becoming more important in today’s workplace.

Current trends in modern resume design:

Infographic style: Resumes are adopting an infographic design style, with icons and graphics that communicate information quickly and effectively.

Personal branding: Incorporating personal branding elements, such as logos or taglines, is becoming increasingly popular and helps create a unique and memorable impression.

Color schemes: Color has been introduced to modern resumes, with muted tones that add visual appeal without being too distracting.

Mobile optimization: Modern resumes are designed with mobile compatibility in mind, with streamlined layouts that make it easier for recruiters to read and review on their mobile devices.

Importance of customization:

Customization is crucial for modern resumes, as one size does not fit all. You should tailor your resume to each job opportunity, incorporating relevant keywords, experiences, and skills. Customization also takes into account the company culture and values, aligning your qualifications and experiences specifically to the job and organization you’re applying for.

A customized resume demonstrates to recruiters that you’ve done your research, care about the job, and understand the company, setting you apart from other candidates who submit generic resumes. Additionally, ensure that your resume has a personal touch, as it shows that you are an individual with unique experiences that cannot be replicated, increasing your chances of getting noticed and hired.

resume examples modern

A modern resume is one that showcases your professional experiences, education, and skills in a visually appealing, concise, and relevant manner. By customizing your resume and making it stand out, you are demonstrating your unique value proposition to potential employers and increasing your chances of landing your dream job.

Choosing the Right Resume Template

The success of your job application heavily relies on how well your skills and qualifications are presented in your resume. One way to ensure that your resume stands out from the competition is by choosing the right resume template. Here are some factors to consider when selecting a resume template:

Factors to consider when selecting a resume template

  • Appropriate for your industry and job level
  • Easy on the eyes and readable
  • Simple yet professional design
  • Easy to customize and tailor to your needs
  • Consistent formatting and structure
  • Compatible with your word processing software
  • Can fit all your achievements, skills, and experiences
  • Includes sections that highlight your strengths
  • Concise and to the point
  • ATS (applicant tracking system) friendly

Types of resume templates available

There are several types of resume templates available, including:

  • Chronological: showcases your work history in reverse chronological order.
  • Functional: emphasizes your skills and achievements rather than your work history.
  • Combination: combines elements of the chronological and functional formats.
  • Targeted: tailored for a specific job or industry.

Top 10 considerations when selecting a modern resume template

  • Choose a modern design that matches your personal brand and the brand of the company you’re applying to.
  • Consider incorporating visual elements, such as icons, graphics, or color.
  • Look for templates with built-in color schemes that you can easily customize.
  • Select a template that has space to showcase your achievements, such as awards, certifications, or publications.
  • Decide on a font that is clean and easy to read on both paper and screen.
  • Opt for a format that can be easily converted to PDF for online applications.
  • Consider a template with an objective or summary statement that showcases your value proposition.
  • Look for templates that include sections on soft skills or hobbies that relate to the job.
  • Make sure the template has enough space for your work experience, accomplishments, and education.
  • Check that the template is formatted for ATS systems and won’t interfere with the application process.

By taking the time to select the right resume template, you’re increasing your chances of getting noticed and securing that dream job.

Traditional Modern Resume Templates

While modern resume templates have shaken up the traditional format, some job seekers may still prefer a more traditional look and feel for their applications. This is where traditional modern resume templates come in, combining the classic elements with modern design.

Examples of Traditional Modern Resume Templates

Some examples of traditional modern resume templates include:

  • Chronological: This format lists your work experience in reverse chronological order, but with a modern design and layout.
  • Functional: This format focuses on your skills and achievements, while still maintaining a traditional look and feel.
  • Combination: This format combines elements of both chronological and functional resumes, with a sleek, modern design.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Using a Traditional Modern Resume Template

Advantages:

  • Familiarity: Many hiring managers still prefer the traditional format, so a traditional modern resume template can help you stand out while still presenting a familiar layout.
  • Professionalism: Traditional modern resume templates convey a sense of professionalism and reliability.
  • Flexibility: Traditional modern resume templates can still be customized with modern design elements, showcasing your personality and creativity.

Disadvantages:

  • Lack of Innovation: Using a traditional modern resume template may not demonstrate your ability to think creatively or stand out from other candidates.
  • Stagnation: If everyone is using a traditional modern resume template, it may be harder for you to differentiate yourself from other applicants.

When to Use a Traditional Modern Resume Template

If you’re applying for a job in a more traditional industry, such as finance or law, a traditional modern resume template may be more appropriate. It can also be a good choice if you have a lengthy work history and want to showcase your experience in a clear and concise manner.

Ultimately, the decision to use a traditional modern resume template depends on your personal preference and the requirements of the job you’re applying for. As with any resume format, it’s important to showcase your skills and achievements in a way that’s easy to read and aesthetically pleasing.

Creative Modern Resume Templates

In today’s competitive job market, it’s essential to present yourself in a way that stands out from the rest. One way to do this is by using a modern resume template with a creative edge.

Examples of modern resume templates with a creative edge

There is an increasing number of creative modern resume templates available online. Examples include templates with varying color palettes, unique fonts, and layouts that highlight certain skills or accomplishments. These templates can be found on websites such as Canva, Etsy, and Creative Market.

Advantages and disadvantages of using a creative modern resume template

There are both advantages and disadvantages to using a creative modern resume template.

Advantages include:

Attracting attention: Creative modern resume templates can help your resume stand out in a sea of black and white templates. They draw attention to your application and can potentially help you land an interview.

Showcasing creativity and design skills: If you’re applying for a position related to design or creativity, a well-designed resume can serve as a testament to your skills.

Disadvantages include:

Unprofessional appearance: Depending on the industry you’re applying in, a highly creative and colorful resume may not be appropriate. In some fields, such as law or finance, a more traditional format is preferred.

ATS compatibility issues: Many companies use applicant tracking systems (ATS) to screen resumes. Some highly designed resumes may not be compatible with these systems, potentially causing your application to be overlooked.

When to use a creative modern resume template

It’s essential to consider the job and industry you’re applying for when deciding whether to use a creative modern resume template.

When applying for creative fields, such as graphic design, marketing, or advertising, a unique and eye-catching resume may be more appropriate. Additionally, if the job posting calls for a creative or design-focused candidate, a creative modern resume can help showcase your skills and talents.

However, in more traditional fields like law, finance, or government, a more traditional format may be better received. It’s essential to research the company and industry to understand what type of resume will make the best impression.

Using a creative modern resume template can be advantageous in certain circumstances, but it’s important to consider the industry and job you’re applying for before deciding on the format. With the right balance of creativity and professionalism, a modern resume template can help you stand out from the crowd and land your dream job.

  • Contemporary look: With its modern look, a minimalist resume can give you an edge over other candidates who use traditional or outdated designs.
  • Customizable: A minimalist template can be easily customized to match your personal style and brand.

Disadvantages of using a minimalist modern resume template:

  • Limited design options: Minimalist designs are often simple and may not offer as much opportunity for customization as more complex templates.

When to use a minimalist modern resume template:

  • You’re applying for a job in a modern, cutting-edge industry like tech, design, or marketing.

As a result, their resumes must showcase their prowess in design and communicate their professionalism, personality, and creativity to catch the attention of recruiters and hiring managers. In this section of the article, we will examine modern resume templates tailor-made for graphic designers.

Examples of Modern Resume Templates for Graphic Designers

There are different design templates to choose from when creating a resume, and graphic designers have a wide variety of options. • Infographic Resume Template: An excellent option for showcasing the designer’s technical prowess while also offering a creative and visually appealing format.
  • Minimalist Resume Template: A simple and clean resume template with well-organized sections that helps the designer highlight their expertise, skills, and experience.
  • Creative Resume Template: This modern template is designed to showcase the designer’s personality and creativity while still being professional.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Using a Resume Template Tailored to Graphic Designers

  • Hassle-free design: With a pre-designed template, designers do not have to worry about the technical aspects of design and can focus on their content.
  • Consistency: A template ensures a consistent style throughout every section of the resume, which can help demonstrate the designer’s attention to detail.
  • Efficiency: The ease of using a template can save time in the design process, allowing designers to produce more resumes in less time.
  • Lack of Customization: Templates have limitations and may not include specific sections or styles designers want to showcase.
  • Overused Design: Selecting a popular template may mean competing with other job seekers using the same template.
  • Relevance: A template must cater to the specific needs of the design job applied for, or it may not appeal to the recruiters.

When to Use a Resume Template Tailored to Graphic Designers

Resume templates optimized for graphic designers provide an easy way to create a visually appealing resume that showcases not only a designer’s skills but also their personality. Here are some factors to consider when deciding whether to use a modern resume template:

  • Time Constraints: If the designer wants to apply for multiple positions in a short period, a template can save time.
  • Confidence: If a designer is unsure about their design skills, templates offer ideas and inspiration for designing an exceptional resume.
  • Design Requirements: If a specific job application mentions a preferred design style, using a design template that matches this style could enhance the chances of landing an interview.

Graphic designers seeking to stand out from the crowd can greatly benefit from using modern resume templates tailored to their profession.

Engineer Modern Resume Templates

Advantages and disadvantages of using a resume template tailored to engineers

Using a modern resume template can provide several advantages:

Stand out from other candidates : Using a modern template immediately makes your resume more eye-catching and memorable.

Time-saving : Resume templates come pre-formatted, allowing you to save time and focus on the content.

Tailored format : An engineer-specific template can highlight your skills and experience in a way that’s easy for hiring managers or recruiters to understand.

However, there are also disadvantages to using a resume template:

Lack of originality : Since templates are available for anyone to use, it can lead to generic, unoriginal resumes.

Limitations in content : A pre-made template cannot always accommodate unique situations, including non-traditional work experience or a large number of technical skills.

When to use a resume template tailored to engineers

Using a modern resume template is a great way to stand out and showcase your skills as an engineer. Here are some situations where using a template may be the best option:

When you’re short on time : Templates can provide a quick solution when you need to polish your resume quickly.

When you’re unfamiliar with resume design principles : Not every engineer has experience with resume design, and using a template can provide a professional look.

When you’re submitting an online application : Online applications require standard text formatting, and templates fit this requirement perfectly.

Using a modern resume template tailored to engineers can help you stand out from other candidates while saving you time and providing an easy-to-read format for hiring managers or recruiters. However, it’s important to balance originality with the benefits of a pre-made template. Consider your own skills and unique experiences to decide if a template is the right choice for your resume.

Healthcare Modern Resume Templates

As healthcare is one of the most demanding industries, it requires professionals who are well-equipped with specialized knowledge and skills. • Professional Appearance: A modern resume template can provide a professional and updated appearance that aligns with the healthcare industry’s standards.
  • Easy to Customize: The healthcare industry encompasses different job profiles, ranging from doctors, nurses, pharmacists, to administrators, and each job profile requires a specific skill set. A resume template tailored to healthcare professionals can be customized easily to highlight specific skills, qualifications, and experience.

Disadvantages of Using a Resume Template Tailored to Healthcare Professionals:

  • Generic Layout: One of the main disadvantages of using a resume template is that it can sometimes result in a generic-looking document that lacks uniqueness and personality.
  • Limited Flexibility: While healthcare resume templates are easy to customize, they may not cater to every requirement or job role. Some healthcare professionals may need to add additional sections or customize the layout, which may not be feasible using a pre-designed template.

When to Use a Resume Template Tailored to Healthcare Professionals:

  • First-Time Job Seekers: For healthcare professionals who are starting their career, using a resume template can give them a head start in creating a professional-looking document without spending too much time on formatting and layout.
  • Quick Job Applications: If a job posting requires a quick application, a pre-designed template can help healthcare professionals to save time and effort.
  • Focused on Content: If the professional intends to focus on highlighting their skills, qualifications, and experience in a clear and concise manner, using a tailored healthcare resume template can be helpful.

Using a modern resume template tailored to healthcare professionals can be an excellent way to make a professional and memorable first impression. While there are some drawbacks to using a pre-designed template, the advantages outweigh the disadvantages in situations where time and efficiency are essential. Ultimately, healthcare professionals should aim to showcase their unique qualifications, skills, and experience while using a modern template as a helpful guide.

Executive Modern Resume Templates

As an executive, your resume needs to showcase your skills, accomplishments, and leadership potential. Using a modern resume template specially designed for executives can help you achieve a professional and polished look. Here are some examples of modern resume templates tailored to executives:

Advantages of using a resume template tailored to executives:

  • Saves time and effort: A pre-designed executive resume template can save you hours of formatting and editing, allowing you to focus on the content and message of your resume.
  • Provides structure and guidance: A proven executive resume template can serve as a guide on what sections to include, how to organize them, and what information to emphasize, ensuring that your resume adheres to established industry standards and best practices.
  • Enhances visual appeal and consistency: A professionally designed executive resume template can make your resume stand out from the competition and transmit a sense of expertise and professionalism to employers. Moreover, using a consistent style, font, and format throughout your resume can convey attention to detail, clarity, and coherence.

Disadvantages of using a resume template tailored to executives:

  • Lack of uniqueness and creativity: Using a template can result in a generic and predictable resume that fails to showcase your personality, voice, or personal brand. It can also limit your ability to customize or tailor your resume to specific job applications or industries.
  • Template constraints and limitations: Some templates may have predefined sections, headings, or bullet points that may not align with your career goals, experience, or qualifications. They may also restrict your flexibility to add or remove information or change the formatting.
  • Template saturation and familiarity: Using a template may make your resume look too familiar or overused, especially if many other candidates are using the same template. It may also create a false impression of creativity or originality, leading employers to focus more on the design than on the content.

When to use a resume template tailored to executives:

  • You need a resume quickly: If you’re short on time and need to submit a resume urgently, a template can help you speed up the process and create a presentable resume in minutes.

Education Modern Resume Templates

When it comes to creating a standout resume as an educator, there are several modern resume templates available to help you achieve your goals. These templates range from creative designs with bold colors and unique layouts to more classic, streamlined designs that prioritize professionalism.

Examples of Modern Resume Templates for Educators

Some of the most popular modern resume templates available for educators include:

Bold and Creative:  A design that incorporates bright colors and unique fonts can help your resume stand out. This template may be especially useful for educators who are looking for positions in creative fields or who want to showcase their artistic side.

Streamlined and Professional:  A more traditional, professional design can help educators highlight their experience, education, and skills in a clear and concise way. This type of template may be ideal for educators seeking positions in more traditional academic or administrative settings.

Clean and Simple:  This design focuses on white space and minimalism to create a clean and easy-to-read resume. It’s ideal for educators who want to focus on their accomplishments and skills without the distraction of too much visual flair.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Using a Resume Template Tailored to Educators

There are both advantages and disadvantages to using a resume template tailored to the education field. Some of the advantages include:

Saves Time and Effort:  A template can provide a starting point for your resume, making it quicker and easier to put together a polished and professional document.

Focused on Education:  Templates geared towards educators typically highlight relevant education-related information, such as certifications, licenses, and teaching experience, allowing for a clearer representation of qualifications.

Professional Appearance:  Well-designed templates can help you create a resume that looks more professional and polished than one you might create from scratch.

However, there are also a few drawbacks to consider when using a template, including:

Lack of Customization:  While templates can provide a good starting point, they may not allow for enough customization to fully highlight your unique qualifications and experience.

Lack of Originality:  Employers may receive many resumes that look similar, especially if they are using popular templates. This could make it harder for your resume to stand out in a crowded field.

Not One-size-fits-all:  While templates do provide a starting point, you may still need to customize your resume to cater to specific job postings or applications.

When to Use a Resume Template Tailored to Educators

A template can be especially useful for educators who are looking to create a polished and professional document quickly. Templates can also be helpful for those who are just starting out in their careers or for those who may need some guidance as to what information to include on their resume.

However, it’s important to note that templates should be seen as a starting point, not a final product.

In This Guide:

Understanding the modern resume template, when and why to use a modern resume, elements of a modern resume, five job positions where a modern resume shines.

The modern resume template provides you with a way to communicate your experience in a more visually engaging way with design elements and different layouts. This format allows you to highlight key information with:

  • Backgrounds

The modern resume’s minimalist design ultimately enhances the content with various elements (e.g. sidebars, graphs, etc.), thus showing your suitability for the role.

Using a professional modern resume template can help you:

  • to stand out amongst candidates;в
  • hint at your personality and understanding of design;
  • use visual storytelling to highlight your experience ;

The aim of the modern resume format is to strike the right balance (in your professional presentation) between your self-expression and recruiters' expectations.

The modern resume template provides professionals with a double-column layout (one being a sidebar). The goal is to fit your experience into no more than a single page.

The modern resume layout's main emphasis is on the top one-third, allowing plenty of space to personalize your:

  • Header - the design could include a full-width one;
  • Summary - providing a snapshot of your expertise and role alignment;
  • Skills and Achievements - your strengths become at the forefront of recruiters' focus.

One vital thing that stands out about the modern resume template format is that it fits enough relevant information and is easy to scan. The reason is that the modern resume includes:

  • concise, essential information - targeted to the role you're applying for;
  • white spaces - to clear away any clutter, highlight distinct sections, and make your resume more readable;
  • typography formatting - bold and italicized for keywords/skills, etc.

The best modern resume templates have a clean look and feel, and provide space for creativity like with a “My Time” section that you can find on Enhancv resumes.

Different design elements are used to cleverly emphasize relevant information. Check out some Enhancv best practices below:

  • Use icons for resume sections like achievements and strengths to help recruiters pinpoint your unique professional value;
  • Illustrate your skills (and language ) competencies with progress bars/ sliders and charts to give a better idea of your proficiency level;

Visual elements need to enhance and balance the design, not take away from what matters most - your experience and skills.

Modern resumes vs traditional resumes

resume examples modern

Let's compare how the modern resume template differentiates from the traditional one.

We'll focus on three main elements.

1. Modern Design template vs traditional one

The modern resume template has a stylish and sleek design with ample white spaces.

On the other hand, the traditional resume design is more formal and conservative.

2. Length of a modern resume vs a traditional one

Modern resumes are more concise to prioritize key achievements / essential information.

Traditional resumes can be up to two pages long to detail more responsibilities and achievements.

3. The top-one-third of the modern resume vs a traditional one

Modern resume templates prioritize the top-one-third of the resume via headlines , links to portfolios, and summary .

Traditional resumes opt for a more simplified resume top-one-third. Where LinkedIn or portfolio links aren’t a must and an objectives section (or personal statements) is included.

Read on and learn how to write a modern resume.

Before we dive into the best-case scenarios of when you should be using a modern resume template, let's look at six reasons why.

You should use a modern resume layout to:

  • Reflect your aesthetic as fresh and innovative while highlighting what matters most (key skills and accomplishments);
  • Match the brand - below we'll detail which companies/ industries suit the modern resume template;
  • Stand out with a bold, contemporary layout;
  • Increase the chances your resume will be reviewed by a human as this layout is Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS - or the software used to assess applicants) compatible;
  • Make a positive first impression by demonstrating an array of soft skills (e.g. up-to-date with design trends and standards; presentation);
  • Save time - Enhancv's tools allow you to easily customize your resume by curating the sections that best fit your experience and selecting from plenty of exciting color combinations.

Find the modern resume layout that best suits your personality and fits the role you're applying for.

This next part will examine when it's a good idea to use a professional, modern resume template.

Use the modern resume template to become synonymous with innovation

It’s especially useful for those of you who:

  • think you are a visionary;
  • want to work for a contemporary company;
  • come from a creative or technical background;
  • have developed a unique personal brand;
  • deem it relevant to stand out.

This resume format is a sure way to signal to potential employers that you are on the same page as them.

Use the modern resume template to align with the industry you’re working in.

The modern resume template is beneficial for all industries that call for a bold approach.

The two most popular innovative fields are:

  • The creative industry (graphic design, marketing, advertising, media, etc.). Roles within the profession value visual presentation, design skills, and outside-the-box thinking.
  • Technology or IT-related (software development, web design, data analysis, IT project management). The modern resume template shows recruiters you are well aware of current design trends and technologies.

The modern resume format isn't a good call for more conservative industries like academia, where a more standard approach is called for.

Use the modern resume template to tailor your profile to the company you’re applying at.

Applying to a company (or startup ) that uses any of the following adjectives as part of their description - “youthful”, “hip”, and/or “cutting-edge” (imagine the likes of Google, Tesla, Shopify, Facebook, and Spotify)?

Your ability to embrace change, new approaches, and technological innovations is what will resonate the most with these types of organizations.

That's why the sleek, modern resume template is the right choice for you. It'd help you align your profile to the brand's culture.

Use the modern resume template to match the role you’re applying for.

The modern resume template could be appropriate if you apply for any position and at any level of the hierarchy.

Let's use entry-level professionals as an example.

They could use this format to compensate for their lack of extensive experience .

And thus shift the focus in a visually appealing and succinct manner to:

  • skills and achievements;
  • education and relevant projects;
  • portfolio/ social media and personal interests.

These sections may not be entirely related to official job experience, but it’s a trick to turn a problem into an opportunity.

As a result, your resume will look complete and will show some advantages that might otherwise remain hidden.

Use the modern resume template to stand out with a bold and contemporary look.

The modern resume's striking layout makes a great first impression on recruiters.

Add some flavor to your resume by using vivid colors to highlight the section headings. Just make sure to use no more than three colors.

This personalized design could help you attain a more professional look and feel.

Modern resume layout

Enhancv's modern resume layout allows you to present your expertise and skills in either a single or double-column format.

We recommend using the second option (where you have a sidebar on either the left or right side). The two columns make critical information more presentable and show you made an effort to organize your resume.

Other vital sections that could make up your modern resume layout include

  • Summary - describing your biggest successes and values (as a professional) in two-to-three sentences;
  • Job experience - roles in reverse chronological order with achievements, presented via bullet points;
  • Education - include more information about courses, only if they're relevant to the job;

On how long your resume should be, expect an additional page for every 10 years of work experience.

Additional sections to make your modern resume even more complete and show who you really are:

Ensure that content is always relevant and not just taking up space. And always make sure to use active language and strong action verbs - to show your character.

Using the modern resume space strategically

Now that we've covered the layout, let's discuss the white spaces and lines .

These crucial modern resume elements:

  • increase the readability of your profile, thus making it more easily skimmable;
  • clear the clutter to allow for breathing room between important skills and achievements.

Color and color combinations for a modern resume

Want to show just how creative you are with your profile?

Then, add some colors to your modern resume with Enhancv's builder. You could custom-pick the hues for:

  • Primary information (e.g. your name, jobs, degrees, skills, etc.)
  • Secondary information (e.g. header, companies, icons, universities, etc.)

And the choice is entirely up to you!

You could go for a more subtle palette - the standard black text and gray highlights, on a white background. Thus creating contrast with different shades.

Or, selecting brighter and more vivid colors for your modern resume, like orange and blue or green and pink.

Experiment with the tone of your resume sidebar - to reflect the secondary color of your choice.

One final heads up - select no more than three hues to match the standard, white background.

Want to go above and beyond with your modern resume design?

At Enhancv, we've updated our design elements with a colorful background - to suit even the most creative professionals.

Modern resume fonts and typography

When selecting the typography of your resume, you don't need to go all out with the trendiest fonts.

Instead, you can use time-tested and readable ones to help your resume stand out.

Enhancv users' favorites include bold and light fonts, such as Rubik, Lato, Montserrat, and Raleway. You can also use Arial, Inter, and Roboto if you’re doing your modern resume in Google Docs or Word.

Want to make key information stand out even further and more scannable? Elements within the top one-third of your resume (like your name, headline, or key achievements) can be bolded.

Unique design elements of modern resumes

The modern resume template allows you to get creative with unique design elements like

  • icons to highlight different sections, such as Achievements or Skills;
  • sidebars in different colors to focus attention on job requirements you match;
  • background visuals (with 3D elements and colors) to stand out.

You could also further quantify your industry expertise; hard , soft , and language skills with sliders.

Want to shift the resume focus toward your hobbies?

Illustrate how you spend your time via a pie chart with up to seven slices, or add the covers of the books that inspire you.

Using graphics and icons is a strong advantage of modern resumes, but make sure to use them in moderation. Otherwise, you risk looking immature.

Digital Marketing Specialist

Especially within the online space - where users' attention span is mere seconds.

And what better way to show your forward-facing vision than a modern resume template?

Where you have space to demonstrate that you don't merely understand and apply current trends, thanks to your experience .

And, also, how you've stayed ahead of the curve and set groundbreaking trends with the projects resume section.

Your Step-by-Step Guide to Making the Perfect Resume (With Examples!)

person on laptop

Your resume is arguably the most valuable piece of paper for your career. But this document can be daunting for many. Maybe you’re not sure how to fit in all your information onto one page. Maybe you’re not sure about the right way to format and write your resume. Maybe you don’t even know what the heck a resume is!

Whatever your concern, we’ll break down everything you need to know about making the perfect resume, from scratch.

What Is a Resume?

What are employers looking for in a resume.

  • Pick Your Format
  • Start With Your Basic Information
  • Add in Your Work Experience
  • Consider Including Volunteer Work or Other Experience
  • Don’t Forget Your Education
  • Top It Off With Some Skills and Interests
  • Write a Resume Summary Statement (if Relevant)
  • Tailor It to the Job (and the ATS)
  • Edit and Refine It

What Are Some Examples of a Good Resume?

A resume is a summary of your career, whether yours is just getting started or has been going on for years. Coming in at around one page in length (two only under specific circumstances), it showcases the jobs you’ve held and currently hold, the responsibilities you’ve taken on, the skills you’ve developed, and the qualities you bring to the table as an employee. Together, those things make it super easy for any hiring manager to see your qualifications and fit for a role.

For all the work you may put into writing one, hiring managers actually spend very little time—mere seconds in many cases—looking at your resume. But despite this sad fact, it’s safe to say that creating a great resume (rather than hastily throwing one together) still matters.

“If you miss the mark, your resume may never be read. Even worse, you might be removed from the applicant pool by a computer before a human even knows you exist,” says Muse career coach Heather Yurovsky , founder of Shatter & Shine. So you want to get it right because, as she explains, isn’t the goal to “spend less time looking for a job and more time in a role you love?”

You might be wondering if you can lean on your LinkedIn profile instead of writing a resume. The answer, sadly, is no. Most hiring managers still expect you to submit a resume, even if they also look at your LinkedIn. Even if you don’t need a resume for a job you’re applying for now, you’re going to need one at some point in your career—they’re not anywhere close to going out of style. So it’s best to always have one at the ready should an opportunity pop up.

And although LinkedIn has plenty of benefits, a resume has one clear advantage: While your LinkedIn is usually a broader picture of your career trajectory, your resume gives you the opportunity to tailor your career story to a specific role or company (more on that later).

Oh, and you’ve probably heard of something called a CV? It’s slightly different from a resume , and usually more common with academics and job seekers outside the U.S.

Hiring managers look for three things on your resume, “What did you do? Why did you do it? And what was the result?” says Muse career coach Martin McGovern , owner of Career Therapy. “If you can answer all three of these questions in...your resume bullet points, you’re going to be on the right track.”

Clear, easy-to-understand language is key. “The truth is that most resumes make no sense. They are stuffed with jargon, they are too technical, and they are filled with redundancies. Try to read a resume that isn’t yours and you will quickly realize that it feels like an alien wrote it,” McGovern adds. Put yourself in the shoes of a recruiter who has no idea how your role works—how can you make your resume accessible to them?

The hiring manager also cares about more than just you and you alone—they care about you in relation to them. “Hiring managers want to see if a candidate matches the requirements” of the role they’re hiring for, Yurovsky explains. “Your resume should paint this picture so the hiring manager not only knows what day-to-day responsibilities you can handle, but why you, above other[s], bring value to their organization.”

How Do You Write a Resume?

Whether you’re someone who’s never written a resume in your life, or you need a nice, thorough refresher on the process of creating one, follow these steps to go from a blank page to a complete—and dare I say beautiful—document.

1. Pick Your Format

Before you start typing one single thing, you have to decide what you want the overall resume to look like.

Resume builders can be helpful for this step—they’ll take all your basic information and organize it for you, eliminating some of the legwork. You can also use a pre-made outline, such as one of these free Google Docs templates .

But it’s often safest to start with a clean slate all on your own and eventually upgrade to a more advanced layout. (If you'd still like a place to write all the relevant information before you get started, check out our resume outline .) This allows you to course correct, edit and re-edit, and choose a resume format that best fits your particular situation (after all, not everyone has a career trajectory that’s easy to compartmentalize).

In general, you’re most likely to cover and/or include sections on the following:

  • Your work experience
  • Your non-work experience, including professional organizations, community involvement, or side projects
  • Your education and certifications
  • Your skills (specifically hard skills) and interests

So how do you format and organize all of that information?

By far the most common (and safest, if you’re not sure which route to take) option is reverse chronological order . This means you organize your experiences from most recent to least recent. So your work experiences would go above your education, and your current role would go above previous roles you’ve held. This of course has its exceptions—maybe you went back to grad school between jobs, or your most recent role is irrelevant to the job you’re applying for. So the whole page may not be exactly in reverse chronological order depending on your situation. It’s just a guideline.

There’s also something called a functional or skills-based resume . This is used pretty rarely, mainly with career changers and those with limited or complicated work histories. It gets its name because it’s primarily about listing your skills rather than experiences, and showcases them above your work history and education.

You can also opt for a combination resume , which is a mix between a reverse chronological resume and skills-based resume. It highlights your skills at the top, but allows just as much room below to cover your job and school experience.

Use caution when choosing these two formats: “Combo and skills-based [resumes] can be hard to follow, because [they force] the reader to hunt for connections between your skills and experience, and [don’t] provide the full context of your work,” says Muse Career Coach Angela Smith , founder of Loft Consulting. “I’ve also heard a lot of recruiters say that they automatically discount skill-based resumes because they feel the candidate is trying to hide something. I don’t necessarily believe that, but I think it’s important for job-seekers to know that perception is out there.”

2. Start With Your Basic Information

Your contact information should always go at the top of your resume. In this header you’ll want to include anything that could be helpful for a recruiter to get in touch with you. Usually, this means adding in:

  • Your full name (preferably the name you use across the web)
  • Your phone number
  • Your personal email address

You might also choose to include other basic information, such as your LinkedIn or personal website URL, your GitHub (for technical roles), your social media profiles (if relevant to the job), or your address. If you’re looking to move for a job, you may choose to leave out your address or write “open to relocating” to better your chances of getting an interview.

The key is to make this part as clear as possible. If a hiring manager can’t reach you, there’s no point in perfecting the rest of your resume.

3. Add in Your Work Experience

This section will most likely be the bulk of your resume. Even if you’re changing careers, employers still want to see where you’ve worked, what you’ve done, and the impact of that work to get a sense of your background and expertise.

Your “Work Experience” might be one entire category, or you might choose to break it up into “Relevant Experience” and “Additional Experience” to highlight the jobs that are most important for hiring managers to focus on. Either way, you’ll almost always want to have your most recent experience at the top and your older experience down below.

Within your work experience, you’ll want to include each official job title, the company (and possibly its location), and the years you worked there. Below that, you’ll add in two to four bullet points explaining what you did in that job, the skills you built and exercised, the tools you used, and the results of what you did. If you accomplished a lot during your time there, focus on the responsibilities that made the most impact or you’re the most proud of, as well as the ones that best align you with the job you’re applying for (more on that in the following sections). It’s key here to list, if relevant, quantitative as well as qualitative accomplishments.

For example, you might write:

Associate Accountant, Finances and Co., Ann Arbor, MI September 2017 – Present

  • Manage billing and invoicing for more than 50 clients, ensuring the deadlines and needs of our enterprise partners, including Big Company and Super Star Org, are met
  • Collaborate closely with sales, account management, and project management teams on project setup, maintenance, and invoice management
  • Assist in the streamlining of invoicing guidelines and procedures through documentation and the implementation of new software, resulting in an average two-week decrease in total time spent per client

Your resume bullets should be in past tense if you’re referring to past jobs and present tense if you’re talking about your current roles. In addition, your bullets should always start with a strong action verb that best describes what you did. And if you have examples of your work, consider hyperlinking them here as well.

If you have a ton of experience and this category is starting to run long (read: over one page), consider kicking out your oldest jobs unless they’re super relevant to the job you’re applying for, or extra impressive for your field.

Not sure where to start? “It’s helpful to do a brain dump and create a document that has everything and anything you consider as experience or an achievement,” says Yurovsky. From there, she explains, you can start to whittle down what is and isn’t important. And you can refer to this document later if you ever decide to update your resume for a specific role.

4. Consider Including Volunteer Work or Other Experience

Anything you’ve done that’s not work experience—your side gig, volunteer work, special projects—can be hosted under clearly-labeled sections (“Volunteer Experience” or “Activities,” for example). Depending on how robust your work experience is, these things may be worth including, particularly if they’ve helped you level up your skill set or better align you with your dream job. Plus, they make you look that much more well-rounded, passionate, and hardworking.

If you’re a recent grad, you might also build out a section for on-campus activities, such as clubs, organizations, or leadership experience. This can be a great supplement if you’re lacking in the jobs department. You can frame these just as you would professional jobs—including your title, the organization’s name, and bullets describing what your role was and what you accomplished.

5. Don’t Forget Your Education

If you’re still in school or just graduated, your education can go at the top of your resume, but for pretty much everyone else, this goes near the bottom. Most people include their school, graduation year (for folks less up to about a decade out of school), major, and degree. Brand-new grads might also write in their GPA, honors and awards, study abroad, thesis, or other notable achievements. But keep this section super simple, as you don’t want it to take up too much space over your work experience.

It’s possible you have unique education experience, such as taking an online course or certification. If you did this specifically as a way to boost yourself within your industry, definitely include it. Again, list everything more or less reverse chronologically—so a grad school degree would go above an undergrad degree, and a more recent relevant online course would go above that.

6. Top It Off With Some Skills and Interests

The skills section of a resume gets a bad rap, but it’s just as important as the rest of the stuff you include. It’s a quick list a recruiter can scan to see if your skill set aligns with what they’re hiring for. And it’s super ATS-friendly (ATS stands for “applicant tracking system,” the robot that in some cases reads your resume before a human does) because it allows you to add in keywords the machine is scanning for.

Usually this section goes at the bottom of your resume, but in special cases—such as a skills-based resume or when someone’s switching fields—you may place it further up.

What exactly do you throw in here? You’ll want to list any hard skills and applications you’re familiar with (Photoshop, SEO, JavaScript, to name a few examples), and, if relevant, your level of expertise. Avoid including soft skills here, like time management or public speaking—save those for your bullet points instead.

Be strategic when filling in your skills. Don’t list things you actually couldn’t do at a high competence level (I’m looking at those of you who say you’re “great” at Excel), and maybe nix skills that are completely irrelevant to the job you want. For example, you may not even need to include Excel if you’re applying for say, a design position, unless it’s listed as a job requirement.

Maybe you’re thinking, I’m a really good volleyball player, but that’s not a “skill,” right? No, it’s not, but it is a hobby. Adding in a hobby section at the bottom of your resume is underrated, and frequently a smart choice. It can be a great conversation starter with a hiring manager, and it can show that you’re a good culture fit—or a culture add—for the company. Also, it’s just a nice way to add in some of your personality. So tack on a bullet point listing out some of your interests, such as hiking, rowing, or crafting (no more than five to seven work-appropriate verbs), and you’re all set here.

7. Write a Resume Summary Statement (if Relevant)

You may have heard of a resume summary statement . They’re not super common, but they can be useful to include near the top of your resume if you’re looking to add clarity or context to your resume. If you’re a career changer, you might find a summary statement helpful in explaining your leap and tying your experience to your new path. Or if you’re a more experienced professional, you can use a summary statement to highlight a theme that brings your career trajectory together.

Overall, you probably won’t need a summary statement if your career is pretty linear and your bullet points do a great job of emphasizing what you have to offer in terms of skills and experience. But if you think it makes sense to include one, “Take the time to think about what the person reading your summary wants to know before you write it,” says McGovern. “Good summaries explain why you do what you do and how it can help. For instance: Merging a background in ABC, I help companies improve XYZ through 123. Summaries shouldn’t be any more complicated than that.”

So, taking McGovern’s example, you might say:

Merging a background in social media marketing and PR with seven years in the consumer tech space, I help companies improve their internal and external communication and brand awareness through data-driven, quality content and strategies that align with the modern trends of the space.

Yurovsky adds that “you don’t want your summary statement to be a dense paragraph with too much information. You want it to be easy to read, concise, and memorable. Almost like a tagline.”

8. Tailor It to the Job (and the ATS)

Once you have your resume written out—you’ve broken down your work experience, tagged on some activities and additional experiences, and listed out your skills—it’s important to go back to the job description (or multiple job descriptions, if you’re applying to several similar jobs) and make sure that what your resume says matches up with the kind of candidate the employers are looking for. In other words, tailor it .

Let’s explain further. You’ll want to begin by tackling the ATS . This means combing the job description to see if individual words and phrases line up. What skills are they asking for, and have you listed them (so long as you actually have them)? What words are they using to describe their ideal hire, and do you use similar language in your resume?

Next, take a bird’s-eye view. If you were the hiring manager for the role, where on your resume would your eyes be drawn to? And what would you be looking for? Whatever you think will be most important for the recruiter, make sure it’s near the top of your resume, or otherwise emphasized.

Finally, dig into the role and responsibilities of the job. Does your resume reflect similar experience? If not, is there a way you can spin it so that it’s clear you’re capable of doing the job (and doing it well)?

9. Edit and Refine It

Please, please don’t just write your resume and shoot it out without giving it a second glance. Hiring managers may not spend hours browsing it, but if there’s one thing that sticks out more than anything else it’s a glaring typo.

The best approach? Write a rough draft, then leave and come back to it later with fresh eyes to give it an edit.

Cover the basics: Is your contact information correct and updated? Are you using the right verb tenses? Does everything look consistent and accurate in terms of spelling and grammar?

Then do some cutting if your resume’s quite long. It’s no longer a hard-and-fast rule that all resumes must be only one page—but consider it a smart guideline for most applicants, especially if you've got less than 10 years work experience. The exception is if you’re very senior or very established in your career; in this scenario, a two-page resume isn’t completely out of the question. Everyone else, read this article for advice on how to cut your resume down.

Formatting-wise, it’s key to consider a couple things. First, what font are you using , and is it legible (for a human and a robot)? When in doubt, go with one of these simple, but sleek, options: Arial, Arial Narrow, Calibri, Cambria, Garamond, or Helvetica.

Second, are you going to save it as a Word document or PDF ? Neither option is wrong, although a PDF helps ensure that your formatting is maintained, no matter what type of computer the hiring manager uses to open the document.

Third, is your resume formatted in a way that it’s skimmable? If it’s feeling crowded or overrun with words, read this: 12 Tiny Changes That Make Your Resume Easy for Recruiters to Skim .

Once you’ve given it a few good looks, it may be worth sending it to a friend or colleague (or even a career coach ) to get a second opinion. Don’t just have them edit it for spelling and grammar—they should dig into your bullets and offer feedback on whether or not your resume is showing you in the best possible light (it’s smart to also send them the job description for something to compare it to).

Here’s the thing: Your resume won’t ever look exactly like someone else’s, nor should it. How you choose to format it, organize your information, and talk about specific experiences depends not just on your career path, but on your field, the job you’re applying for, the company that job is at, and more.

So there isn’t a universal way to do a resume. But there are common themes. To give you some context as to how yours might turn out, here are three examples of different kinds of resumes.

The Most Popular: A Reverse Chronological Resume

As previously mentioned, a reverse chronological resume is preferred by many coaches and HR experts, mainly because it’s super readable. When everything’s in a clear order, it’s easy to skim and even easier to draw lines between experiences.

Who it’s good for: Just about everyone—from students applying to internships all the way up to senior-level executives (with an optional resume summary statement)

The Unorthodox Route: A Functional or Skills-Based Resume

Rather than listing out your experience in reverse chronological order, a functional or skills-based resume has bullet points that reflect how each of your skills is demonstrated by the work you’ve done over the course of your career. At the bottom, you’ll include everything else, such as your education, job history, professional achievements, community involvement, and other technical skills. This is a good option if you have a somewhat all-over-the-place work history and want to tie everything together neatly.

Who it’s good for: Career changers whose work experiences may not appear to be relevant and people with an abundance of temporary jobs or gaps in their work histories.

The Creative Angle: An Infographic Resume or Resume Website

This resume type is characterized by how it’s formatted visually. You may choose a reverse chronological order or skills-based style to organize your information, but also use graphics, colors, unique fonts, and even multimedia elements to help that information pop. Keep in mind that any creative resume is still likely subject to an ATS—and certain elements may be unreadable by a robot. So consider going this route only if you know a human will be reading your resume (and that said human might enjoy it).

Who it’s good for: People applying to creative roles (designers, editors, writers, marketers, video producers, for example), startups, or fun companies, or to jobs where a creative resume is encouraged, if not required.

Your resume is a living, breathing document. So while you won’t go through this whole process every time you apply for a job, you should be thinking about all these things as you go to update your resume for your next career step. You might decide later on to switch up the order, or remove or add things, or even get creative and try out a whole new format. If you’re not getting the calls back you expect, you may decide to scrap it and start over —and that’s totally OK.

Regardless of where this piece of paper goes and how it grows, when you give it the care and attention it deserves, you set yourself up for success. And you’ll make it that much more likely that you’ll land an interview and get the chance to prove to the hiring manager—over the phone or in person—what you’ve got to offer.

How To Write A Resume

A resume template is the best cure for the blank page syndrome. You’re halfway done — all that’s left is to fill in the blanks in the resume template and hit save.

Select The Right Resume Format

The 3 most popular resume formats are chronological, functional, and combination resumes.

  • Chronological resume organizes the information like LinkedIn does – from the latest position to the first one, with education, interests, and additional info listed later. It’s the most popular resume format, preferred for recruiters. Go for it unless you’re entry-level or changing careers.
  • Functional resume keeps the focus on your skills and experience, rather than employment history. It’s the go-to choice for candidates with employment gaps and those without much hands-on work experience.
  • Combination resume takes the best of both worlds and allows you to spice up your “dry” employment history with some juicy details about your skill set and achievements. Startups and edgier companies may prefer this.

Create a Compelling Summary

A resume summary is a two-sentence statement highlighting your key qualifications, skills, and value proposition for the role. It sits in the header area, right after your name and contact details. Think of it as a teaser to a movie — you should put your most marketable skills upfront to immediately capture the hiring manager’s attention and get them interested in reading the full copy.

Add Work History

List your employers in reverse chronological order. Each entry should include the employment date, job title, company name, key responsibilities, and achievements listed in bullet format . Include 3 to 5 bullet points for each position. Don’t get long-winded — your resume must fit into one page.

Include Marketable Resume Skills

With skills-based hiring on the rise, you must demonstrate specific competencies rather than just tenure and educational credentials. Showcase your best hard and soft skills in a featured sidebar section, plus your resume summary and work experience entries.
