  • Program Overview
  • Learning Objectives

The mission of the Department of Psychology and Social Services is to provide a learning environment that encourages and challenges students to master the content and skills needed to work with and to serve a diverse community of people in a variety of settings.

This is achieved by integrating and assessing the disciplines of psychology with a biblical worldview so students who major in psychology are prepared to enter in their field and uphold their Christian values.

Students in the program learn to properly analyze a wide range of research data,  understand and effectively communicate the basic concepts of psychology, and a pply theoretical psychology to real-life scenarios to uncover practical solutions. They  explore the cognitive, behavioral, social, physical, and spiritual dimensions of people across the world.

The learning objectives for a psychology major are:

  • Students in psychology can use worldview analyses appropriately in understanding the field, can articulate the role of a Christian worldview, and can articulate their own.
  • Students will show a understanding of the discipline focusing on the historical and contemporary knowledge bases, theories, methods, and cultural competencies.
  • Students will have a clear understanding of their calling and vocation and have a plan for pursuing their calling.

Career Outcomes

Graduates who aspire to have an impact in their communities and their careers through a Geneva Education gain expertise in this field enhanced by academics rooted in Christian values and ethics in Geneva’s program.  When earning your psychology degree, you might be surprised to learn that our graduates work in highly diverse fields ranging from business, law, medicine, research, and teaching. This is because organizations increasingly seek to hire candidates with the ability to understand human behavior. Those that go on to graduate study for counseling or psychology also earn much higher than the average annual U.S. salary. While becoming a psychologist, psychiatrist, or counselor requires licensing—depending on the state in which you choose to practice—each of these professions will always remain in demand.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects the need for psychologists to grow by 6% into 2031.

Data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics indicates that the median annual wage for psychologists is $81,040.

Field Training

You will see client actors for at least ten sessions, using person-centered therapy interventions. These sessions are videotaped and reviewed with your supervisor weekly. You will also attend class weekly to cultivate introductory psychotherapy skills. This training experience is overseen by two faculty members working closely with our director of clinical training and the chairs of both the PsyD and PhD programs.

We will match you to one of our 70+ training sites throughout the greater Los Angeles area, where you will complete a nine-month supervised practicum. You will spend approximately ten hours a week working directly with clients and receiving related training and supervision. In addition, you will be assigned to a Fuller consultation group where you will develop and practice skills in integrating theology and clinical practice.

We will work closely with you to locate a nine-month practicum training experience at one of our 70+ training sites. During this training year you can anticipate spending approximately 12 hours a week at your practicum placement. In this placement you will work with appropriately complex cases and further develop your clinical skills in a setting of your choosing. At this level of training you will be supervised only by a licensed psychologist.

We will help you select a 12-month clerkship training placement from one of our partners. In this training year you will get clinical assessment experience in order to enhance your assessment skill; receive an introduction to an array of current clinical psychodiagnostic methods and tests; and develop and demonstrate excellence in synthesizing all of the data generated by clinical interviews, psycho-diagnostic testing, and any relevant research into a comprehensive report. This placement is approximately 12 hours per week.

We will work closely with you to select a 12-month pre-internship training placement from one of our partners. The goal of this training year is to provide a combination of clinical and assessment training opportunities that are appropriately challenging and complex with regard to clients’ presenting concerns and the types of interventions used.

You will complete a one-year internship at an APA-accredited internship site.

My family and I came to Fuller in 2019 from Michigan so that my husband could pursue his MDIV. Throughout those years, I fell in love with Fuller; the multicultural experience of just living in Fuller Housing, and felt personally drawn toward the School of Psychology. In 2022 I applied and was accepted into the Marriage and Family Therapy Program where I am currently a student. The program has been personally life-changing. Since my studies began, I have become a better wife, mother, and friend. The faculty is rich with knowledge and care as they excellently prepare us for future clinical work as well as beautifully integrate theology and psychology throughout the program. Now, as an admissions counselor, I have the unique opportunity to assist individuals in the process of applying to SOPMFT programs as well. It is a profound honor for me to be able to walk alongside individuals as they navigate the possibilities of how Fuller can be the catalyst for what God has created them for and ultimately affect positive change for the world.

Ph.D. FAQ's

Students are expected to take coursework, participate in seminars, assist faculty in on-going research, develop independent research skills, and gain teaching experience and expertise.

The program is designed so that the requirements can be completed in four years, though some students may take five years or longer to complete their individual program of study.

The program is designed to concentrate coursework during the first three years of study, leading to the qualifying exam. Upon successfully passing the qualifying exam, students are admitted to doctoral candidacy, where course demands are minimal.

Many students spend their first year in the program initiating independent research. This research is designed to lead to a Master of Arts (MA) degree during the student's second year, following their thesis research and a successful thesis defense. Completion of a Master's degree is not required but strongly encouraged. Upon successful completion of required coursework, third-year students are eligible to apply for doctoral candidacy.

Currently, the program has 23 full-time students, and we expect future enrollment to increase. There are 18 core and 11 auxiliary faculty from Psychology, Biomedical Studies, Neuroscience, Nursing, Medicine, and Statistics.

Research interests vary widely. Many of the faculty have behavioral interests, including animal learning, personality and impulsive/aggressive behavior, and memory and cognition. Others have interests in the more molecular aspects of neuroscience, such as psychopharmacology, electroencephalography, and teratology. Finally, many faculty have overlapping interests, and collaborative research among different faculty laboratories is common.

Though admission decisions and funding decisions are considered separately, most students receive full support (see financial support page for specific details). This funding support is granted for one year, with no guarantee of future funding (continued funding is based on availability of resources and academic standing). However, a student in good standing can reasonably expect full funding support for the duration of a reasonable (e.g., 5-year) term of study.

The Department of Psychology and Neuroscience has been a leader on the Baylor University campus with respect to capitalizing on new teaching technologies. Therefore, our classrooms are equipped with state of the art multimedia teaching resources. Continuing our commitment to quality resources, Baylor University completed the construction of a new science building, valued in excess of $100 million dollars, in June of 2004. This facility has state of the art classrooms, laboratories, and animal care facilities. Our commitment to outstanding pedagogical skills is also reflected by the fact that a substantial part of the Ph.D. Program in Psychology at Baylor University is built around exploiting these new teaching resources through formal instruction and hands-on teaching.

Students seeking a terminal Master's Degree are not admitted as our program only admits students who are intent on pursuing the Ph.D. However, as previously stated, students are encouraged to earn their Master of Arts (MA) degree in Psychology by proposing, completing, and defending a Thesis, usually in their 2nd or 3rd year of study. Finally, occasionally students admitted to the Doctoral Program leave before completing all of the work required for the Ph.D. In those exceptional cases, students may be given the opportunity to complete a Terminal MA in Psychology, which may or may not require completing and defending a Thesis.

The successful applicant will have a Bachelor degree or equivalent; minimum 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale; three letters of recommendation; a personal statement of interest; and an expressed area of academic/research interest that is compatible with those of faculty.  Application deadline is December 1 (11:59 p.m. ET) each year. LATE APPLICATIONS WILL NOT BE REVIEWED, although the Baylor Graduate School allows late submissions.
