Beyond their value as pieces of original research, these collections document the history of American higher education, chronicling both the growth of Harvard as a major research institution as well as the development of numerous academic fields. They are also an important source of biographical information, offering insight into the academic careers of the authors.

Printed list of works awarded the Bowdoin prize in 1889-1890.

Spanning from the ‘theses and quaestiones’ of the 17th and 18th centuries to the current yearly output of student research, they include both the first Harvard Ph.D. dissertation (by William Byerly, Ph.D . 1873) and the dissertation of the first woman to earn a doctorate from Harvard ( Lorna Myrtle Hodgkinson , Ed.D. 1922).

Other highlights include:

  • The collection of Mathematical theses, 1782-1839
  • The 1895 Ph.D. dissertation of W.E.B. Du Bois, The suppression of the African slave trade in the United States, 1638-1871
  • Ph.D. dissertations of astronomer Cecilia Payne-Gaposchkin (Ph.D. 1925) and physicist John Hasbrouck Van Vleck (Ph.D. 1922)
  • Undergraduate honors theses of novelist John Updike (A.B. 1954), filmmaker Terrence Malick (A.B. 1966),  and U.S. poet laureate Tracy Smith (A.B. 1994)

Crafting a powerful thesis statement for your Ph.D. dissertation is a critical step that lays the foundation for your entire research journey. Follow these steps to create a well-structured and impactful thesis statement:

  • Understand Your Research: Before writing your thesis statement, have a clear understanding of your research topic, objectives, and the specific contribution you aim to make to your field.
  • Identify the Core Idea: Distill the main idea or argument of your dissertation into a single, focused statement. Consider the essence of your research and its significance.
  • Be Clear and Specific: Your thesis statement should be clear and specific, conveying precisely what your dissertation will address. Avoid vague or ambiguous language.
  • Avoid Generalizations: Refrain from making broad generalizations in your thesis statement. Instead, focus on a specific aspect or angle of your research.
  • Highlight Originality: Emphasize what sets your research apart. Your thesis statement should convey the unique perspective or approach you’re taking in your dissertation.
  • Map Out Your Approach: Briefly mention the key methodologies, theories, or concepts you’ll use to explore your research question or argument.
  • Test for Clarity: Share your draft thesis statement with peers, mentors, or advisors to ensure that it’s clear and accurately reflects your research.
  • Ensure Alignment: Your thesis statement should align with the overall structure and goals of your dissertation. It serves as a roadmap for what readers can expect.
  • Revise and Refine: Don’t hesitate to revise your thesis statement as your research evolves. It should accurately capture your dissertation’s evolving focus.
  • Write the Introduction Last: While your thesis statement is typically found in the introduction, consider crafting it after you’ve written your dissertation. This allows you to ensure it truly encapsulates your work.

Tips for Writing a Thesis Statement for a Ph.D. Dissertation

Writing an impactful thesis statement for your Ph.D. dissertation requires precision and thoughtfulness. Here are some tips to guide you:

  • Clarity is Key: Your thesis statement should be crystal clear and easy to understand. Avoid jargon or overly complex language.
  • Stay Focused: Ensure that your thesis statement addresses a single main idea or argument. Don’t try to encompass too much in one sentence.
  • Be Specific: Specify the scope and direction of your research. Highlight the aspects of your topic you’ll explore in your dissertation.
  • Reflect Originality: Showcase the unique contribution your dissertation makes to your field. Convey how your research advances existing knowledge.
  • Evoke Interest: Craft a thesis statement that captures readers’ attention and curiosity. It should entice them to delve into your dissertation.
  • Consider the Reader: Think about your audience. Your thesis statement should communicate your main point to both experts and non-experts in your field.
  • Revisit and Revise: As your research progresses, revisit your thesis statement. It may need refinement to accurately represent your evolving findings.
  • Synchronize with Content: Ensure your thesis statement aligns with the content of your dissertation. It should serve as a reliable guide to your work.
  • Avoid Ambiguity: Steer clear of vague language or ambiguous terms. Your thesis statement should leave no room for misinterpretation.
  • Seek Feedback: Share your thesis statement with peers, mentors, or advisors. Constructive feedback can help you fine-tune your statement for maximum impact.

Remember, your thesis statement is a beacon that guides both you and your readers through the complex terrain of your Ph.D. dissertation. Crafting it thoughtfully sets the stage for a cohesive and impactful research journey.  In addition, you should review our  education thesis statement .
