Requirements for Honors in the Religion Major
Undergraduate studies - honors in the major.
The Department of Religion offers the opportunity for Religion majors to earn Honors in the Major. The Honors in the Major program is designed to encourage talented juniors and seniors to undertake independent and original research as part of their undergraduate experience. Honors in the Major is excellent preparation for graduate and professional study. The honors thesis is regularly an essay of some length (25 pages minimum with no maximum set) on a topic that might be generated by work taken in regular courses but which is expected to go beyond the boundaries of any specific course.
Who is Eligible for Honors in the Major?
A student must have at least 60 and normally 75 hours of college credit, including at least twelve hours of graded courses at FSU, with a 3.2 cumulative GPA on all college work attempted and on all FSU work. Students must apply and be accepted into Honors in the Major by the FSU Honors Program before registering for Honors in the Major credit in religion. It is not necessary for the student to have already been part of the Honors program, which is separate from the Honors in the Major.
Where Does a Student Interested in Honors in the Major Begin?
Students interested in participating in the Honors in the Major program in religion should begin making inquiries of appropriate faculty members at least two semesters and preferably three semesters prior to the intended semester of graduation. A student who has identified a faculty member and a topic in advance and is ready to begin research in the first semester can usually complete the requirements for Honors in the Major in two semesters. A student who needs time to develop a topic may wish to allow three semesters to complete the requirements. All students must adhere to the timelines specified by the Honors Program for Honors in the Major. A student interested in working with a particular faculty member should meet with that faculty member to discuss possible research areas and topics. A student interested in a particular area of religion or in a particular topic should identify a faculty member with interest and expertise in that area or topic and meet with the faculty member. After identifying a faculty member who is willing to direct a thesis, the student should contact the Honors Program about applying for the Honors in the Major program.
What are the Requirements for completion of honors in the Major?
To graduate with Honors in Religion, a student must
- conduct independent research under the guidance of a faculty member;
- complete an honors thesis based on the research;
- and successfully defend the thesis before a faculty committee, usually in the term in which the student expects to graduate.
What Courses Should an Honors in the Major Student Register for?
The course you register for, for Honors Thesis credit, is REL 4932. Honors in the Major students will complete six hours of Honors thesis credit to graduate With Honors. Honors students earn three hours credit at the 4000-level each term for two or three terms. The student must earn at least six hours of Honors in the Major credit and maintain a 3.2 cumulative GPA. All six hours are applicable toward major requirements. Work in progress is assigned a grade based on the submission of preliminary drafts of sections of the thesis or project.
Students are invited and encouraged to seek assistance and guidance from the Undergraduate Director in Religion . Students should also consult the FSU Honors Program website for more detailed information on Honors in the Major.

Effects of silver nanoparticles on wastewater treatment and escherichia coli growth.
- Description
The Effects of Silver Nanoparticles on Wastewater Treatment and Escherichia Coli Growth
Perez, Michael (author)
Nanomaterials and their increasing use in manufactured products are of great concern to wastewater treatment systems and the environment. Nanosilver has become one of the most popular nanoparticles due to its many applications and relatively low manufacturing costs. It is currently being used for a wide variety of commercial products including medical applications, water purification, antimicrobial uses, paints, coatings, food packaging. Impregnating other materials with silver nanoparticles is a practical way to exploit the germ fighting properties of silver (Nanotechnology 2006). In clothing such as socks, nanosilver may restrict the growth of odor causing bacteria (Benn, Nanoparticle Silver Released into Water from Commercially Available Sock Fabrics 2008). These impregnated socks however have been shown to release large amounts of n-Ag particles when washing. These free nanoparticles easily enter wastewater collection systems. The microbial inhibitory effects of nanosilver were evaluated by studying the effects Escherichia coli (E. coli) growth under nanosilver presence. Results showed that E. coli bacterial growth was inhibited when nanosilver was introduced. This may have detrimental impacts on aerobic wastewater treatment systems which rely on bacteria to break down organic material. Systems may become inefficient and obsolete with an increasing prevalence of nanosilver in sewage.

Doing research as an undergraduate will enrich your experience at FSU by connecting you to your field and to the faculty and graduate students in the department. Undergraduate research experience will also improve your chances for admission into graduate schools and medical, dental and veterinary schools. Undergraduates can become involved in research in several ways. The UROP program allows students to begin doing research in their freshman and sophomore years. Or, you can do Directed Independent Study (DIS) doing research with a faculty member and get credits toward your Biological Science major. And finally, there is Honors in the Major, which is similar to DIS work but involves writing and defending a thesis at the end of your project.
Directed Independent Study (DIS, BSC 4900, BSC 4901 and BSC 4910)
DIS allows students to work in a faculty member's lab, participating in their research. Students register for BSC 4900. This course is repeatable; students usually register for 2 or 3 hours per semester. Up to 12 hours of DIS can be applied to your BS degree but only 6 hours can be applied to the major. If you want to do a DIS you must first find a faculty member with whom to work. Once a faculty member has agreed to be your sponsor, you will need to meet with an undergraduate adviser to set up your DIS credit on your course schedule. Some faculty list DIS opportunities on our website ( http://www.bio.fsu.edu/undergrad/researchops.php ) but most students find a faculty DIS sponsor by reading about what individual faculty are working on and then approaching individual faculty. DIS research is not limited to Biological Science faculty, you can work with faculty in other departments. Many biology students work with faculty in Biomedical Science Chemistry and Psychology . If you work with a faculty member outside of biology remember to register for the DIS through the biology course number BSC 4900 if you want to have the credits count toward your Biological Science major. If you register using a chemistry or psychology or other course number, those credits will count toward your degree but not toward your major.
If you do two consecutive semesters of DIS in the same faculty member's lab those hours will not only count toward you biology elective hours but they can also be used to satisfy one of the required upper division laboratories by signing up for BSC 4901 your second semester of DIS. If you do two semesters of DIS in the same faculty member's lab and write a paper at the end of your project you can have the DIS work substitute for the BSC 3402L requirement (Experimental Biology Laboratory) by signing up for BSC 4910 your second semester of DIS work. Remember though, if you use DIS work to substitute for BSC 3402L you will have to meet the University speech requirement in some other way. See the advising office for details.
Please see the current bulletin for a more detailed course description and requirements for BSC 4900, 4901 and 4910 credit, and talk with an adviser in the undergraduate advising office prior to general registration about enrolling in these courses.
Honors in the Major
The Department of Biological Science offers an Honors In The Major program to encourage talented juniors and seniors to undertake independent, original research as a part of the undergraduate experience. Honors in the Major differs from DIS in that the students do two to four consecutive semesters of research with a faculty member and write and defend a thesis at end of their project. Students who successfully complete Honors in the Major have "Honors in the Major in Biological Science" added to their transcript and "With Honors in Biological Science" on their diploma.
Students who participate in Honors In The Major become members of the University Honors Program and are eligible for all program activities and other benefits. Honors In The Major students are also eligible, on a space-available basis, for honors-only liberal studies courses. Each term that an honors student is in the program, the student enrolls in BSC 4970r: Honors Work in Biological Science for 3 semester hours. To allow sufficient time to complete the scientific research and write the Honors Thesis, the course is repeatable to a maximum of 12 semester hours, 6 hours of which can be used to meet the 38-hour biological science coursework requirement.
Biological science majors who are interested in the Honors In The Major program may apply if they have:
- Completed at least 60, typically 75, college credits
- Earned a 3.2 cumulative grade point average (GPA) on all course work (including transfer credits)
- Earned a 3.2 GPA on at least twelve (12) semester hours of coursework at FSU.
General information on the Honors In The Major program or admittance criteria can be obtained by contacting the University Honors Program at A5400 University Center, 850-644-1841.
For specific information on applying to the Honors in the Biology Major program, biological sciences students are encouraged to contact Dr. Janie Wulff, Director of Honors In The Major for the Department of Biological Science (4075 King Building; [email protected]).

Bess H. Ward Thesis Award
Welcome to the FSU Honors Thesis Funding Application!
Thesis funding is awarded on a competitive basis during each Fall and Spring semester at FSU. Students must be actively working on their Honors Thesis in order to qualify for funding. Previous recipients of the Bess H. Ward Thesis Award are not eligible to apply a second time. Once applications are closed they are reviewed by a faculty panel. Winners will receive up to $750.00 to help cover the cost of their thesis project.
The awards can be used to cover expenses such as travel to perform research, books, basic supplies, or participant support for surveys. Any equipment or materials purchased with the award money become the property of the student, although the student may elect to donate the equipment to a department or college upon completion of the thesis. Upon the completion of the Honors Thesis, recipients of the award will be required to submit a casual headshot and a brief critical reflection to the Honors Program. Funding for this award is made possible by the Bess H. Ward Endowed Scholarship.
