The teacher I like most is Raman sir. He is the teacher of mathematics in our school. From the first day, all the students in the class felt very close to him because of his friendly behaviour with all of us.

I am a student of 10th Class of a reputed private school. There are many great teachers in my school but everyone has that one teacher they are especially grateful to. Likewise, my favourite teacher is Mr Manish Khandelwal Sir. Manish Sir teaches us Maths, and he has a really attractive personality. He is very polite and humble and we all the students love him. He is also a person trusted the most by parents and teachers, as he constantly strives in creating a balanced environment in working hard at academics and having fun doing so.

Manish Sir is tall and quite good looking. He is 32 years old and very experienced. His way of teaching is excellent. He believes in simple living and high thinking. Manish Sir is my favourite teacher because he is very humble, kind and polite. I love his way of teaching. He loves all students and doesn't believe in punishing them. He focuses more on conceptual clarity than burdening students with excessive homeworks. He never scolds students and never expresses his concerns in the form of anger. Instead, he talks to the students personally in a calm manner, in a way that helps us improve and wants to put in more effort.

He asks students to be honest with him and always gives equal attention to all the students. He never makes fun of any students and gives extra attention to the weak students. Whenever a student fails to understand any question or equation, he puts extra effort to make him understand, and never tends to lose patience. He calmly explains no matter how many times he has to repeat the same question or statement. He is focused on making us understand every concept with utmost clarity and that is the reason why all students love him.

One of my most favourite qualities of Manish sir is that he keeps track of every student in the class; how they are performing or what are the things they are good at. He constantly keeps an eye out for everyone in the class and helps them to improve themselves and guides them throughout the learning process. He is one of the best teachers in our school who keeps constantly motivating their students and guiding them in all spheres of life. Manish sir is especially known for not showing even the tiniest amount of favouritism. He treats all his students with an equal amount of fondness and love and cares for every one of us deeply.

He is very experienced and full of life. He tends to keep the entire class on a positive note and never exhibits any behaviour that deteriorates other people. We students love to attend his class because he is very understanding. He covers each topic in detail and gives his full attention in class. He would be the first one to notice if even a single student loses track or starts dozing off. He would just suggest an alternative method or a simpler explanation instead of blaming the student for not paying enough attention to the class. He knows how to draw students' attention in class. He never assigns us too much homework, and after class, he provides us with regular assignments to assess our understanding of a particular topic.

The assignments are often designed to be more informative and research-oriented rather than just making us write down questions or paragraphs from the book and memorise them. By actually going through related articles and books, we gain a greater amount of knowledge and this way, we tend to remember what we learn for a long time as well.

In case if any student fails to do the assignment or performs poorly in a particular chapter, he doesn't shout at them but instead makes them understand the concept again. This way, we students understand that whatever he is doing is for our own benefit and we tend to work harder to improve ourselves. These are a few of the things he does that makes him different from the other teachers and appears approachable to everyone around him. I have never seen a humble and polite teacher like him, and one day I will try to be like him in my career.

Among all the teachers who taught us Mr. Anurag is my favorite teacher. He taught us history.

Personality of My Teacher

Mr. Anurag is about 34 years of age, tall, smart and has a tough look. He also knows karate. He believes in high thinking and simple living and thus, always wears simple clothes and looks so sober. His manners are pleasing and liked by all. He is also an experienced English teacher.

He has masters or postgraduate degrees both in History and English. Also, he is very soft-spoken and yet strict in discipline. The best part of him is that he doesn’t believe in physical punishment. I have never seen him giving any kind of punishment to anyone. Rather disciplined is maintained nicely in his class. He has some positive influence on us.

He has perfect command over History and English. His knowledge of Indian history and English literature is very good. His pronunciation is perfect, accurate and very clear. I feel fortunate to be his student and so other students also feel the same. He looks upon us as his own sons and takes a lot of interest in solving our school and personal problems.

He is also the principal advisor of our school drama club and also prepares students for English debate and elocution contests. In his first-class itself, he gently and in a very calm way introduced himself and went to each and every student to ask about their hobbies and favourite subjects. When he asked me, I abruptly said, “I don’t like Mathematics, and history is my favourite subject.”

The classroom went completely silent. I was afraid that he was going to be upset over my answer, but to my shock, he smiled and said, “We will change that by the end of this year.”

Now I am in class 12, and he really did change my favourite subject. I love mathematics only because of him. He is and will always be my favourite teacher. He taught his students in a way no other teacher did. Not only that, but he never scolded anyone for doing any of the work wrong. Furthermore, he was always very patient and friendly. Even the weakest students in the class including me were slowly improving in the exams because of him.

Way Of Teaching | He used funny and catchy rhyming tricks to make us learn the hard mathematics formulas. We never ever felt any discomfort or fear in his presence; he turned the class into a convivial and jolly place single-handedly. There were days when I looked for Sunday to pass, just to be in the Mathematics class on Mondays. Whenever I got confused or troubled with any problem – from a small long division sum to choosing my career, I went to him, and he solved all my problems in seconds. Even my classmates used to take his help and fondly called him sir counsellor.

On the teacher’s day, he even won the best teacher award. He was selected by popular voting. I realised that day Anirudh sir is a favourite of many. I felt very proud and happy for him.

Inspiration To Students | He was also involved in many social activities. He used to teach poor kids for free in the evening. He was connected with many NGOs and went to teach underprivileged kids in slums on weekends. I remember once he took our entire class to the slum area. I was struck with awe when I saw him teaching the kids there with the same level of passion and zeal he used to teach us in the school. That was the moment he became my all-time favourite teacher.

Impact On My Life | I scored the highest marks in Mathematics in my class 9. He developed a spark in me to study mathematics. He turned the dull and boring subject into something I love doing just for fun. I even scored full marks in my class 10 Board Examination. I spoke to him over the phone and thanked him. The mediocre student in me will be forever grateful to him for teaching with so much passion. He played a huge part in making me what I am today.

My Teacher is a mentor, a role model, a guide and a friend we all need in our daily lives. He is the one to instil amongst the student the values of learning and becoming a better individual in life. I am a student at a private school in New Delhi, and there are over 40 teachers in my school, but Mr. Kashyap is the teacher, I admire the most.

Mr. Kashyap was a robust man in his thirties, tall and had a tough look. His appearance could be defined as a person wearing simple clothes, but his eyes gleamed with confidence. From his face, one could make out that he had an enormous amount of knowledge within himself. He had a postgraduate degree in both History and English and had an M.Phil. Degree in History.

He used to teach history to around 900 students in our school, and everybody seemed to love his way of teaching. History was generally considered a boring subject by me till the time Mr. Kashyap made his arrival in my life. He introduced me to the subject in a completely new way, and I started to like the subject and wanted to know more about it.

Mr. Kashyap used to believe that only knowledge confined by the syllabus was not enough, he used to discuss about topics beyond the program and encouraged us to be updated with things happening around us in our daily lives. We never had to face a monotonic history class with Mr. Kashyap as he always made the classes exciting with facts about history and civics. She teaches us Maths, the subject I fear the most. I used to be extremely scared of it because I always failed to solve those tough problems. Narrative Essay: My Favorite Teacher

Introduction

My favorite teacher of all time has to be my English literature teacher. He was called Mr. Radford, and Mr. Radford is my favorite teacher for many reasons, all of which I will go over as they happened. The course of events goes from my first year to my last year of high school.

Taught me history

My favorite teacher was my English literature teacher. He started out as my history teacher and made a first impression as a bit of a stuffy old man. He believed in god, even though most of the class didn’t, and he was known for shouting at kids. He was also oddly loved by the older students, and nobody in the first year knew why as we sat in class before him.

The world is flat

He started a lesson by telling us the world is flat. He said he could prove it and encouraged the class to quiz him on it. We spent the whole lesson arguing fiercely that the world was round, but every answer, reason or evidence we gave to him was thrown back with a plausible theory. He explained why we do not fall off of the end of the earth, and gave even more convincing reasons was to why a compass points north and south. As the bell went and we were all about to leave, he said to us, “That is the reception Copernicus got when he tried to explain that the earth was not the center of the universe.”

Had a triple heart bypass

He vanished and we were told he had a triple heart bypass. The support he got from the students was legendary. Shortly before he came back, our English teacher (who was also a fantastic man) died of leukemia. Mr. Fawdry was a great man and treated his students with the same respect he gave adults.

Came back as an English literary teacher

Mr. Radford came back and started to teach English instead of History. He was still the Principal’s second in command, but had decided to change to history. The man who now taught history was a spotty young man who could not handle the class. Veteran teachers had trouble controlling the classes, so having this man teach History was like throwing a lamb to the wolves. Mr. Radford always had control of his class, and even once told of the brainy kid in the class for talking too much (which was a great moment for all of us).

He thought he was history, but he still has a story to live

Mr. Radford stopped teaching history and started teaching English. It was weird seeing him in a new setting, but the class structure and respect level stayed the same. He did not even look ill after having the surgery; although he probably had a lot of time to recover, (it gets harder to remember these days).

Who is making all of this noise?

This was a classic line that he gave as he burst out of his English class. The hallways were always a riot as kids moved from one class to another. He was used to being locked in the dungeon that was the history department. The English class was next to the main hallway. He burst out of his classroom into the crowded hallway and yelled, “Who the hell is making all of this noise.” A young first year student who had only been there a week said, “You are.”

Teachers give you last year’s tests to look at so you can see what it going to be on the exams. They have you do mock tests and they point out the important stuff you need to remember. Mr. Radford gave quality advice that nobody else ever said. For example, he said to use the phrase “of which” in a sentence, as it demonstrates a higher level of English that will get you into the higher grade margins.

He was the only one to outwardly defend me in class

Most kids are bullied in school, and I was called names and picked on all the time. It wasn’t a physical thing, just a constant stream of name-calling. I was used to getting it all day every day. It was only in his class where he once said, “Would you leave him alone.” It’s strange how stuff like that is remembered. My Geography teacher did it once too. Mr. Whitaker said, “Would you lay off him” which is also something I remember because teachers used to just let it happen.

He was smart enough to see past Steven Cardwell

In an English Lit class, Mr. Radford said something about John Wayne, and for some reason I said, “Take it away pilgrim” in a normal volume but as a John Wayne impression. Steven Cardwell did a gasp and an “aww” as if I had said something very offensive. Usually, this made the teacher holler at whoever spoke with the assumption that Steven’s reaction was warranted. Mr. Radford didn’t fall for it. He just asked what I said and said no more about it. I had watched countless other kids get in trouble because of Steven, but Mr. Radford didn’t fall for it.

He taught me how to think.

The “world is flat” lesson really got to me. It is the first time I started to question what I am supposed to “know” and what is supposedly true. He taught me to think so that even in the later years when he was teaching English, I could see past the text interpret it in a multitude of logical ways.

Student's 19-word Fight Club essay given perfect grade by teacher

While the rest of us struggle to meet the word count, this woman completely got away with it.

A student’s 19-word essay on Fight Club ended up getting a perfect grade.

Yep, just 19 words - not even the maximum allowed to send a post on X.

For most of us, (you know those that don’t enjoy sitting and writing endless pages of work on a weeknight) essays are the source of absolute dread.

Anyone who has had to spend a night in a library churning one out for a school exam or university assignment will know the stress of trying to condense every key bit into a few hundred words. Or worse, having to somehow waffle on for thousands about just one thing.

But, despite the odds, students tend to muster up a way of saying the same thing in 10 different ways to rack up the required word count. Although, this ballsy one went for a different approach to write about the legendary film .

She decided to base her essay on the 1999 cult hit with Edward Norton and Brad Pitt , in which their characters decide to form a masochistic underground fight club.

And somehow, the student managed to do it in just 19 words - despite how much you might be able to chat about the movie - earning an impressive score from her teacher.

Sharing this big win on X, Allison Garrett wrote: "The assignment description for essay 5 was to write a review of a movie that we had seen. The opportunity arose, and I took my chances."

So, what ground-breaking analysis did she demonstrate to earn such rave reviews?

Quoting the film's most iconic line, she opened her essay with: "The first rule of fight club is: you do not talk about fight club."

Adding at the bottom of the page: "That's it, that's my essay."

I mean, round of applause for the bravery there.

In the comment section, she wrote: "I cannot say that I am sorry because that would be a lie. Am I Proud? Yes."

Proving this was no joke, Allison also posted a screenshot of the comments made by her teacher after reading her 'essay'.

Now, most of us would be terrified after writing an essay like this, waiting to receive the mother of all bollockings from our teacher, but Allison's professor was just impressed - though they warned about trying the same thing with another member of staff.

They wrote on the comments section of the submission page: "I struggled over this grade for a long time. I finally decided you get a grade for a laugh and how relevant your review is for this particular movie.

"Let me warn you: do NOT try this kind of thing with other professors; they may not have my sense of humor."

Since it was shared, Allison's post gained a lot of attention online.

One person wrote: "I was always told life is about taking risks... I was scared to say the least."

Allison later added: "I got a 100 on the paper and passed the class with an A."

With Chestnut out, Oxford speed-eater Geoffrey Esper the favorite at Nathan's hot dog contest

Oxford’s Geoffrey Esper will have a clear shot at climbing to the top of the food chain at Nathan’s Famous International Hot Dog Eating Contest on July Fourth, after Joey Chestnut, a perennial winner of the contest, was barred from defending his title .

Esper, 49, an electronics teacher at Bay Path Regional Vocational Technical High School in Charlton, said in an interview Tuesday that he believes the contest will be “a pretty close battle this year.”

He felt confident ahead of traveling to Coney Island in Brooklyn, New York, where the Nathan’s showdown has been held since 1972.

Esper finished second to Chestnut the last three Nathan’s contests.

“My capacity’s a little bit better this year,” said Esper. “There’s not really much you can do at this point, but my focus will be trying to make sure that I'm totally empty going into contest and my stomach's really loose."

Esper holds bachelor's and master's degrees in physics from Clark University, but it’s his chomping skills that have made him a worthy competitor across many disciplines in competitive eating, something he got into after suffering injuries as a powerlifter.

He is a major player in the Major League Eating circuit.

Last month, he set a record when downing 23.75 pounds of strawberry shortcake in eight minutes to take his fourth title in the Mattituck Strawberry Shortcake-Eating Contest.

Among other accolades: Hooters wing-eating championships and the Jack's Donuts Donut Holes title.

Yet a title at Nathan's has eluded him. Chestnut has dominated the contest, winning the past eight years and 15 of the past 16 competitions.

After signing a deal to endorse a plant-based wiener made by Impossible Foods, Chestnut was banned due to the sponsor's no-meat hot dogs. Nathan's and Major League Eating did not like the deal.

With Chestnut out, Esper has ascended as a favorite on betting sites, with his odds of winning better than those of James Webb of Sydney of Australia.

“I'll be able to lay on the water a little bit harder this year,” said Esper. “In the past I’ve changed things at the very end and that has messed me up at the very end.

“This year I’ll stick to what I know.”

The event is set to start at 11 a.m.

Nice weather, family barbeques, parades, fireworks and red, white and blue everything – Americans are preparing to celebrate Independence Day this weekend with time-honored and beloved traditions.

Known now as a day of patriotism and enjoying time off from work, the Fourth of July began the journey to becoming a quintessential American holiday in 1776, when the Second Continental Congress adopted the Declaration of Independence. Though 12 of the 13 American colonies had already approved the resolution by July 2, 1776, even prompting John Adams to write his daughter with predictions of future July Second festivities, the document declaring independence from Britain wasn’t officially adopted until July 4.

Some Americans began celebrating the very same year, though the practice wouldn’t become widespread until the aftermath of the War of 1812.

Congress finally passed a bill making Independence Day a federal holiday on June 28, 1870. In 1941, the law was amended to make it a paid holiday for federal employees.

Though some traditions associated with the Fourth of July have changed or disappeared over time – hosting mock funerals for the king of England, for example – many have remained true to their roots in the almost 250 years since the declaration was signed.

Fireworks displays are perhaps the most iconic of all Fourth of July revelries. The first celebration came in earnest on July 4, 1777, described on July 5 in the Pennsylvania Evening Post as a demonstration of “joy and festivities.”

Ships “dressed in the gayest manner, with the colors of the United States and streamers displayed” approached the city and fired off 13 cannon shots, one for each colony-turned-state. Later in the evening, 13 fireworks were set off in the city commons in Philadelphia and Boston, which the Evening Post described as a “grand exhibition of fireworks … and the city was beautifully illuminated.”

According to Dr. Tyler Putman , senior manager of gallery interpretation at the Museum of the American Revolution , fireworks had been used in the colonies before 1776, but not in such grand fashion.

“You would have seen fireworks at a lot of festivities, celebrations, anniversaries, you know, things like the king's birthday or big events, but they often were not enormous, launched-in-the-sky fireworks,” he told USA TODAY.

“People would build these kind of structures and frameworks that would then catch on fire, or parts of them would launch off, and often they would be in certain shapes, like a bunch of stars or a dancing person … kind of like a Burning Man sort of thing.”

It wasn’t until the 18 th century, said Putman, that fireworks were perfected and began to resemble the explosive rockets we know today.

Visit any city or town on the U.S. map on the Fourth of July and you could find a parade of some sort making its way through Main Street. Mentions of parades, another tradition that harks closely back to Revolution-era origins, can be found in the earliest correspondences about the newly minted but still unofficial holiday.

In a letter John Adams wrote to his daughter , Abigail Adams, on July 2, 1776, he described what would later be known as Independence Day, predicting it would become “the most memorable Epocha, in the History of America. − I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated, by succeeding Generations, as the great anniversary Festival.”

Though Adams mistakenly asserted the holiday would be commemorated on the second of the month as opposed to the fourth, he was correct in his predictions of the merrymaking to follow.

“It ought to be solemnized with Pomp and Parade, with Shews, Games, Sports, Guns, Bells, Bonfires and Illuminations from one End of this Continent to the other from this Time forward forever more,” he wrote.

Back then, parades looked markedly different from the ones we attend today.

During the Revolutionary War, parades were generally reserved for the military, with armies marching the streets to reach their destinations. It wasn’t until years after the war, in the late 1700s to early 1800s, said Putman, that parades began to look more like what we would recognize today.

When parades began to appear as part of annual celebrations as opposed to one-off events, they didn’t yet feature the marching bands and firetrucks we’re familiar with but instead were full of groups of normal people from town. The city’s butchers, for example, would walk together as one group, and shipbuilders would construct massive floats to be pulled down the street by horses.

“Sometimes you read about parades where, like, in Philadelphia, tens of thousands of people are in the parade and you kind of wonder who is left to watch the parade,” Putman said. “There are so many people, if all the shipwright and the shoemakers and the grocers are all already marching the parade, it's mostly just kids, probably, who are like, ‘Well, I guess I'll wait as this 10,000-person parade goes by.’”

Barbeques and picnics

Independence Day falling in early July is probably reason enough to enjoy a meal outside to take advantage of the warm summer weather. The urge to fire up the grill and lay a picnic blanket out on the grass, however, can also be tied back to original holiday celebrations.

“The really interesting thing about the Fourth of July is that it then spawned all of these semi-public or private celebrations," Putman said. "So, you might go watch the parade and then you have your family barbecue. In the late 1700s, 1800s, people might go out for a big public event, like a giant picnic or parade, but then they'll go back to taverns or family homes.”

Drinking was certainly a prominent component for many Americans, some of whom would go to the local pub and propose toasts in the name of things like independence, the Constitution and the president. George Washington himself even issued double rations of rum to his soldiers on the 1778 and 1781 anniversaries in observation of the day.

Because what we now know as barbeque food began as a form of cooking brought to the Americas by enslaved Africans, it had not yet become a staple of the national diet. Instead, revelers of the day probably would have attended a pig roast or seafood boil. It wasn’t until about 100 years after independence that barbeque went from being a food for poor, enslaved people to being popularized on a national scale, Putman said.

Feasting and drinking "was true of really elite people but also really poor, common, even enslaved people, not just on the Fourth of July, but other holidays would use this as a chance to kind of build community and think about what it meant to be an American.”

Red, white and blue everything

Walk into a grocery store in July today and you will be bombarded by red, white and blue plastered on everything from cocktail napkins to beach towels. In the early days of American independence, however, the colors were not yet representative of a flag that was recognized as universally and uniquely American. In fact, it wasn't until June 1777 that Congress even approved the first official iteration of the flag , which changed many times between inception and the final design created in 1960.

“During the Revolutionary War, flags were something that had kind of a functional purpose: They fly above a fort or they're on the top mast of a ship,” Putman said. “It's really not until the American Civil War, the 1860s, that most people started to use the flag in more personal ways.”

Before then, you would never see the average person, for example, hanging a flag in front of their house, he said. The tensions of the Civil War prompted people to begin adopting iconography of flags, which not only delineated opposing sides of the war but stood as a symbol of different things for individual Americans, like emancipation for Black Americans. During this era, the flag began to appear in places other than flying in front of government buildings, such as on shirts.

This use of the flag’s colors on everyday items grew in popularity in the 1900s, said Putman, and has become even more common in the past few decades. The 50-star flag we now recognize was not unveiled until 1960, after Hawaii and Alaska joined the union in 1959.

More than 50 results are in so far, and they're starting to come through fast.

They include 18 Labour gains, two for the Lib Dems, and one for Reform - all at the expense of the Conservatives.

Former Conservative whip Mark Francois in Rayleigh & Wickford was the first Tory of the night to hold onto his seat, and they now have three seats in total.

One trend that has emerged is Reform's success in the North East.

It's still early, with around 500 results still to come, but they look way ahead of the Tories in most of these constituencies so far.

Two Conservative cabinet ministers deemed at risk have held on to their seats.

Deputy Prime Minister Oliver Dowden has held his seat of Hertsmere by a comfortable margin, with Labour coming in second and Reform UK a distant third.

Meanwhile, Business Secretary Kemi Badenoch has also held on to her seat of Essex North West by a margin of nearly 3,000 votes.

Reform UK has claimed its third seat of the night, just minutes after Nigel Farage won in Clacton.

Rupert Lowe staved off stiff opposition from the Labour candidate Keir Cozens - winning by just over 1,000 votes.

Reform UK leader Nigel Farage has won Clacton.

It's his eighth time running to be an MP - and the first time he's been successful.

He follows Lee Anderson in taking a seat for the party (see 2.19am post).

Mr Farage says it's been a "remarkably clean" battle for the seat and thanks his fellow candidates.

He says he'll do his "absolute best" for Clacton.

He bemoans the first-past-the-post electoral system, but says it's been "truly extraordinary" seeing how well Reform UK has done in such a short time.

He says "this Labour government will be in trouble within weeks" and says Reform will fill the "gap" in the centre-right of British politics.

"We're coming for Labour, be in no doubt about that... this is just the first step of something that is going to stun all of you."

Jonathan Ashworth has become the first shadow cabinet casualty of the night.

The shadow paymaster general has lost his seat of Leicester South - and by just 979 votes.

Independent candidate Shockat Adam won 14,739 votes, and Mr Ashworth won 13,760 votes.

It used to be Labour's safest seat in the region, but it was one of 16 seats that the party directed activists to campaign in because they felt vulnerable due to tensions controversy over Labour's position on Gaza.

Jeremy Corbyn has won in Islington North as an independent candidate.

He won 24,120 votes - with Labour candidate Praful Nargund only taking around 16,000.

Mr Corbyn was banished from Labour after he claimed the scale of antisemitism in the party had been "dramatically overstated".

He has held the seat for more than 40 years and has been heavily campaigning locally to keep hold of it.

Speaking at the count, he says: "I want to place on record my enormous thanks to the people of Islington North for electing me for the 11th time."

Sir Iain Duncan Smith, the former Tory party leader, has held his seat in Chingford and Woodford Green.

Two Conservative heavyweights, Defence Secretary Grant Shapps and Justice Secretary Alex Chalk, both lost their seats in the past few minutes, but Sir Iain has stemmed Tory bleeding - for now.

Independent candidate Faiza Shaheen and Labour candidate Shama Tatler each came in with around 12,000 votes, while the former work and pensions secretary took just over 17,000.

Ms Shaheen previously stood - and lost - for Labour in 2019.

She quit the party after she was deselected as its candidate for the east London constituency.

She said the decision to drop her was "cruel and devastating", and local voters felt that "they can't trust Labour".

Pete Wishart, the SNP's Perth and Kinross-shire candidate, has accepted it's going to be a "really tough night" for his party.

The SNP is predicted to lose 38 seats compared to the 2019 election - dropping to 10.

He said: "What we're hearing from colleagues across Scotland is pretty grim."

Mr Wishart said his party will have to refocus and "rebuild relationships with the Scottish public".

The situation, he said, was an "opportunity to refresh" the SNP's agenda and connect with the public to "regain that trust".

Here are some of the latest results from Scotland:

Dunbartonshire West - Labour gain from SNP with 6,010 majority
Paisley & Renfrewshire South - Labour gain from SNP with 6,527 majority
Kilmarnock & Loudoun - Labour gain from SNP with 5,119 majority
Lothian East - Labour gain from SNP with 13,265 majority

Defence Secretary Grant Shapps has lost his seat of Welwyn Hatfield to the Labour Party.

He lost by a margin of 3,799 votes.

He is the second cabinet casualty of the night, after Justice Secretary Alex Chalk also lost his seat.

Speaking after the declaration, Mr Shapps said he has served in more cabinets than most, and listed the jobs he has held since 2012.

On his final role as defence secretary, he said: "I want to pay tribute to the selfless courage of the men and women of this country who serve in our armed forces."

Moving to the national picture, Mr Shapps said: "It's clear tonight that Britain will have a new government in the morning, and I am concerned that unless it quickly commits to spending 2.5% of GDP on defence, our armed forces may suffer, and so will our friends in Ukraine."

Our political editor Beth Rigby has heard it is "probable" that Jeremy Corbyn will be re-elected in Islington North.

The former opposition leader is running as an independent, going up against the man who replaced him as the Labour candidate, Praful Nargund.

Earlier, a Labour source said it was "looking difficult" for the party in the area.

The exit poll has the constituency down as "too close to call".

Switch up teaching and assessment to help teachers combat chatbot-cheating, say researchers

It's the chatbot technology that can write an essay in a second, but despite its vast capabilities, generative AI is creating headaches for education, particularly when it comes to student integrity and cheating.

Now, new research from the University of South Australia, shows that teachers can combat AI by adopting a transformative approach to teaching and assessments: Design Thinking.

Design Thinking is a human-centric and curiosity-driven methodology that can be easily adapted to the classroom. It builds student creativity, critical thinking , and collaboration—skills that cannot easily be replicated by AI—while concurrently enabling teachers to monitor and assess student learning in a formative manner.

Lead researcher and UniSA Ph.D. candidate Maria Vieira, says by adopting a Design Thinking approach, teachers can address integrity issues posed by generative AI.

"Teachers at all levels of education are challenged by the dilemmas presented by generative AI, with one of the biggest issues being academic honesty and authenticity," Vieira says.

"Chatbots like ChatGPT, Meta AI or Microsoft Copilot are a great temptation for students, particularly when an essay can be produced with just a single click. We know that new technologies are not going away, so as teachers, we need to find ways to promote and assess authentic learning.

"Design Thinking requires students to work through several phases of learning: empathy, definition, ideation, prototyping, testing and evaluation, with each step requiring a specific outcome, an opportunity for feedback, and importantly, a touchpoint for prompt feedback and formative assessment.

"Unlike traditional classroom settings where there is often a 'right' answer, Design Thinking addresses problems without predetermined solutions, challenging students to think more critically and creatively.

"The beauty of Design Thinking is that it allows teachers to assess student progress at any point of the process, and at either individual or group level, which immediately presents a solution to integrity issues posed by generative AI."

Design Thinking can lead to a multitude of different creative outputs, including prototypes, mind maps, and presentations, and enables assessment both at individual level (through evidence of research or self-reflection pieces) and group levels (based on output produced).

As the phases occur in an iterative loop, students can revisit and review their work, which encourages continuous improvement, and helps them learn how to provide and receive constructive peer feedback.

"During the Design Thinking process, students have the opportunity to navigate ambiguity, develop empathy, recognize failure as part of the learning process , and collaborate—all skills that are essential for the 21st century," Vieira says.

"This teaching method encourages students to take greater ownership of their learning, allowing teachers to shift their focus from delivering content, to observing and supporting their students in the classroom, being more attentive to their development and learning process.

"While Design Thinking may not be the only solution for the future of education, it is undoubtedly a successful strategy that can be readily adopted across K-12 education systems to address some of the most pressing challenges associated with AI and global digitalization."
