Commercial bookbinding was established in 1975 by the late Jerry Timmins. 

In 1988, James Watkins took over ownership after serving his apprenticeship at Brown Brothers, a large loose-leaf bindery in the Toronto area; it was there that James learned the craft of bookbinding. Brown Brothers were second-to-none in the trade of specialty work.

Your thesis can be printed by First Choice Books in black and white or full colour, on heavy, smooth white 70lb paper, and bound in a variety of cover-cloth colours and textures. If less than 100 pages we print on one side of the page only.  If more than 100 pages we print double sided.  Please let us know your preferences single or double sided.  We hot foil stamp your title and name on the cover and spine in gold or silver. We can supply a printed, coil bound version, upon request, which some institutions now require along with the bound copy.

What to send us : one PDF file for the thesis, and an email for the exact spelling for the title and credits. (The title might need to be shortened on the spine due to  limited space.) PAPER CHOICE

The second consideration for Thesis Book Binding or Dissertation Book Binding is choosing the type of paper that you want. We offer 5 types of paper as listed below and as explained here in greater detail ( https://phdbookbinding.com/digital-printing/ )

20lb regular or standard Copy Paper. This paper is ACID-FREE and is white in color. It does not have  a watermark. Acid Free paper is made from wood pulp, and it resists yellowing and brittleness over very long periods (measured in centuries). The production of Acid Free paper is also more environmentally friendly than acidic paper.

60lb regular or standard Copy Paper (also known as 24lb Copy Paper)*. This paper is ACID-FREE and is white in color. It does not have a watermark. Acid Free paper is made from wood pulp, and it resists yellowing and brittleness over very long periods (measured in centuries). The production of Acid Free paper is also more environmentally friendly than acidic paper. (See below for why this paper has 2 different names)

20lb, 25% Cotton Paper. This white paper is ACID-FREE and ARCHIVAL. It has a WATERMARK which is visible only when you shine a bright light behind the sheet. Archival paper has all the benefits of Acid-Free paper, except that it resists yellowing and brittleness even longer than ordinary Acid-Free paper. Another difference is that Cotton Paper is made with cotton pulp.

24lb, 100% Cotton Paper . This white paper is ACID-FREE and ARCHIVAL. It has a WATERMARK which is visible only when you shine a bright light behind the sheet. Archival paper has all the benefits of Acid-Free paper, except that it resists yellowing and brittleness even longer than ordinary Acid-Free paper. Another difference isthat Cotton Paper is made with cotton pulp. PLEASE NOTE that A4 (European Letter size) is NOT available in 100% cotton.

80lb Gloss-Coated Paper. This paper is ACID-FREE and is white in color. It does not have a watermark. But unlike regular copy paper, it is also coated with a gloss finish that makes it perfect for printing photos, charts & graphs, and more.

80lb Matte-Coated Paper. This paper is ACID-FREE and is white in color. It does not have a watermark. But unlike regular copy paper, it is also coated with a matte (non-gloss coating) finish that makes it perfect for printing photos, charts & graphs, and more.

BINDING STYLE

Most institutions require Fabric Hardcover Binding with gold lettering or gold emblem for official submission. You can also choose this type of binding for your own personal copies and as gifts because it is binding of the highest quality that is impressive in look and feel. Fabric Hardcover binding is high quality, archival binding that’s fit for the most demanding public or private library. Fabric options include:

• Classic Buckram fabric that is available in different colors,
• Contemporary Levant finish fabric also available in different colors
• Cowhide available in 3 colors

Theses/Dissertations in the Library

An electronic copy of every student thesis/dissertation is forwarded to the Library by the School of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies for electronic publication. 

The electronic copy is posted in eScholar , a digital repository of Ontario Tech research provided by the Library. eScholar collects, preserves, and showcases the academic work of the Ontario Tech community, including faculty publications and graduate theses and dissertations. Materials in eScholar are openly available to the world and discoverable through search engines such as Google Scholar. 

In addition, the Library submits student theses and dissertations to Library and Archives Canada, allowing them to become available online on  Theses Canada  via the  Library and Archives Canada's Thesis Canada Program .

Students may also choose to publish their thesis or dissertation through ProQuest free publishing service (optional) in which case they must sign the  ProQuest Publishing Agreement license form  and return the form to the School of Graduate and PostDoctoral Studies with your thesis/dissertation package.

Students may wish to withhold their thesis/dissertation from publication for a period of time.  Please fill out the  Request for Approval to Withhold a Thesis from Publication form  and return the form to the School of Graduate and PostDoctoral Studies with your thesis/dissertation package.

Thesis/Dissertation Binding: Personal Print Copies

Students may wish to have their personal copy of their thesis/dissertation bound by an outside company.

Master’s theses are typically bound in royal blue and dissertations are typically bound in black but personal student copies or other copies may be done in colours of your choice.

• Copy of completed form Certificate of Approval - Master's Project or Major Paper
• Copy of completed form Submission of Master’s Project or Major Paper  

Papers and Projects are not included in Library and Archives Canada Thesis program.

Doctoral dissertations and master's theses from  1972-1989  are also available on  microform  in the  Media Commons , 3rd floor, Robarts Library.

Search for doctoral dissertations and theses submitted between  1930 to 1997 in the card catalogue in the Reference Department, 4th floor, Robarts Library.

Search by author, department, or subject.

For University of Toronto masters and doctoral theses in the sciences consult the library catalogue . Theses can be searched in the catalogue by author, title, or department .

Where do I find a paper copy in Gerstein?

microfiche copies of U of T masters theses in the sciences are held in the Media Commons (4th Floor), Robarts Library

All theses are shelved by author name on 2-Below at the end of the Z call number range.

Please note that the Engineering & Computer Science Library no longer keeps print theses in the library.  Some theses are located at Gerstein Science Information Centre and others at Downsview. For information on a thesis is located see below .

If you have the citation information for a print thesis, you can search the UTL catalogue :

• By the title of the thesis
• By the author of the thesis

If you would like to browse UofT's theses holdings, use the following instructions:

• Go to the UTL Catalogue .
• Select Call number from the drop-down list.
• Type in the appropriate code (i.e. AEROS for aerospace science and engineering).
• Optional: Type in the year , if you know the year you are looking for
• Example: AEROS 1985

Thesis binding styles.

Library Standard Binding (Buckram) The least expensive book we offer is the library standard binding. This is machine oversewn, with a black buckram cloth cover binding of acid-free construction. Your last name and date of degree are gold stamped on the spine. This is the binding style that graduate students need in order to meet the requirements for a Doctorate at Princeton University. It is also attractive enough for presentation to advisors or undergraduate thesis submissions.

Books up to ½-inch thick are made with a square (unrounded) spine. We round and back the spine for sizes above ½ an inch.

Buckram Roundback Binding The buckram roundback binding includes all the features of our library binding process. In addition, we gold foil stamp the book’s title and your full name on the front cover along with a separator line between the title and name. On the spine we will put your last name and date of degree, along with decorative double lines at the top and bottom of the spine. Our stamping design can be varied to meet the requirements of your school. Stamping colors available include gold, silver, copper, white, black, red and blue.
