Library Standard Binding (Buckram) The least expensive book we offer is the library standard binding. This is machine oversewn, with a black buckram cloth cover binding of acid-free construction. Your last name and date of degree are gold stamped on the spine. This is the binding style that graduate students need in order to meet the requirements for a Doctorate at Princeton University. It is also attractive enough for presentation to advisors or undergraduate thesis submissions.

Books up to ½-inch thick are made with a square (unrounded) spine. We round and back the spine for sizes above ½ an inch.

Buckram Roundback Binding The buckram roundback binding includes all the features of our library binding process. In addition, we gold foil stamp the book’s title and your full name on the front cover along with a separator line between the title and name. On the spine we will put your last name and date of degree, along with decorative double lines at the top and bottom of the spine. Our stamping design can be varied to meet the requirements of your school. Stamping colors available include gold, silver, copper, white, black, red and blue.

Congratulations, you’ve finally finished your dissertation . It’s been professionally proofread and checked by a solid plagiarism checker .

The final step is printing your dissertation, which means choosing between:

• Types of binding
• Color vs. black & white

Single vs. double-sided

• Paper thickness

There are a few printing and binding services to choose from as well. This article presents a few options that can help you make the right decisions.

Binding keeps the pages of your dissertation together, and comes in a variety of price points. Spiral binding is cheaper, a hardcover book binding is much pricier.

The type of binding you choose can depend on:

• Guidelines from your university or department
• The version (draft vs. final)
• The type of work you’re submitting ( PhD vs. master’s thesis vs. undergraduate thesis )

Spiral binding (± $7)

• Professional appearance
• Opens flat, so browsing through the pages is easy
• Fairly inexpensive

Comb binding (± $5)

• Pages are easy to browse
• Binding can be opened and closed
• Can be cheap-looking

Fastback binding (± $8)

• Professional, book-like appearance
• Available in different colors
• Individual sheets can come loose with time

Paperback binding ($10–20)

This type of binding makes your dissertation more durable and professional. In most cases, it’s possible to add front and spine lettering.

• Opening and browsing is less smooth than with spiral or comb binding

Hardback binding ($20–50)

• Customizable cover
• Quality comes at a price

Color vs. Black & White

Check your university’s guidelines to see if there is guidance about whether to print your dissertation in color or black & white. Note that printing in color is on average two to four times more expensive.

In general, a color-printed dissertation looks more professional, but it is often not required.

Printing double-sided is often cheaper than printing single-sided, due to the paper savings — it makes your dissertation half as thick. However, some universities require you to print your dissertation single-sided. Be sure to check the guidelines.

When printing your dissertation double-sided, pay attention to the following points:

• New chapters should start on the front side of the paper. You will need to take this into account and insert “blank pages” when preparing to print.
• Add a blank page after the title page so that the acknowledgments and abstract are not printed on the back of your title page.
• The page numbering is often placed in the bottom right on the right side of the page and bottom left on the left side. You can easily set this in Word by choosing “outside alignment”.
• Check your style guide to make sure there aren’t any rules for printing.

Paper weight

The thickness of the paper (measured in gsm or grams) is something most students don’t think about, but it does have a significant impact on the look and feel of your printed thesis or dissertation.

Standard printing paper has a weight of 75–90 gsm. For a bachelor’s or master’s dissertation, this is likely fine. If you want the paper to look and feel more professional and durable, a paper weight of 100–130 gsm is better. This is often used for PhD dissertations.

Number of copies

It is common to print three to five copies of your dissertation. Depending on your university’s guidelines, you might need to submit one to three copies to your supervisor and department. In addition, you might want to have a copy for yourself or your family.

The production time for printing and binding takes on average two days, and delivery takes at least another day. For an additional charge (ranging from +20 to +80%), the production and delivery time can be shortened.

Have a looming deadline? Your local print shop is likely able to print and bind your dissertation faster, and it eliminates delivery time. However, keep in mind that this is often a little more expensive.

Before sending your dissertation to a print shop, there are three things you should do:

• Save your file as a PDF By saving your file as a PDF, the formatting will be consistent on every computer. This way you prevent any unpleasant surprises, such as offset pages, when receiving your printed product.
• Check for language mistakes There’s nothing worse than finding a language mistake in your printed version. Make sure to proofread your dissertation or make use of a professional proofreading service .
• Update the contents page Before saving your dissertation as a PDF, don’t forget to update the table of contents and cross-check the page numbers listed there with the actual page numbers.

It’s one thing to know what thesis binding to choose when printing your thesis. But there are lots of helpful and important tips that you should consider when it comes to printing. We sat down with BachelorPrint to put together some exclusive advice just for you:

Tip #1- Choosing the right paper:  Most printing services use 80 g/m² paper by default. However, 80 g/m² paper is relatively thin and as a result, the print on the reverse side will shine through if you are printing double-sided. 

Tip:  Remember that printing and binding your thesis is not something you do every day – be sure to use high-quality paper and select 100 g/m² paper – if printing double-sided, we actually recommend 120 g/m² paper. BachelorPrint automatically uses 100 g/m² paper.

Tip #2- Printing single-sided or double-sided:  It’s totally up to you whether you print your thesis single-sided or double-sided. Make sure you check the examiner’s guidelines first – if there are none, the choice is yours! 

Tip:  When printing double-sided, make sure your page numbers are formatted correctly. Uneven page numbers should always be on the right-hand page, and even page numbers should be on the left-hand page.

Tip #3- Printing in color:  It’s up to you whether you print in color or black and white. This depends on your thesis. If your dissertation has lots of charts and photos, color printing would look better.

Thesis Binding

Thesis binding is a specialised business so you should be wary of ‘bookbinders’ who have no experience binding theses. It is worth shopping around as costs can vary significantly. Some companies offer an online service.

It is also a good idea to go to the library and check the inside covers of theses, to see if they contain the name of the binder. That way you get to see the quality of the finished product as well.

Please note that PhD and MPhil must adhere to GRS guidelines for  binding  (scroll down to section 7.1.9). Requirements for binding of Masters by Research theses can vary across faculties, so check with your administrative officer for details.

The Role of Vezf1 in Mammalian Development

Embryonic development relies on the complex interplay of epigenetic regulation, timely expression of genes, signal transduction pathways, and diverse morphological changes. The heart is the first organ to form during mammalian embryonic development. The proper development of the heart is critical to supply nutrients and oxygen to other cell types of the organism. Most cells that comprise the heart originate from the mesoderm post-gastrulation. Cardiomyocytes are the predominant cell type and confer function to the heart via contractile activity. The development and proliferation of cardiomyocytes ceases shortly after birth, where cardiomyocytes only nucleate and increase in size. Consequently, cardiomyocyte insufficiency underlies most cardiovascular diseases, a leading cause of death globally.

Vascular endothelial zinc finger 1 (VEZF1) is a transcription factor expressed predominantly in mesoderm during development. Previous studies from our lab show that the loss of VEZF1 impairs the differentiation of embryonic stem cells into endothelial cells, a cell type derived from mesoderm. Other published studies also show that Vezf1 loss impairs cardiomyocyte growth in Zebrafish and hematopoietic cell differentiation. Our work here describes a detailed investigation of the role of Vezf1 in the differentiation of mesoderm and cardiomyocytes using mouse embryonic stem cell (ESC) differentiation as a mammalian model system. We initially developed an efficient method, known as the Wnt Switch method, to differentiate ESCs into cardiomyocytes. Our technique relies on the treatment of differentiating ESCs with small molecule inhibitors: i) CHIR99021, which induces mesoderm development via the activation of Wnt signaling in the first 48 hours of differentiation, followed by ii) XAV939, which inhibits Wnt signaling and drives mesoderm cells toward cardiomyocyte differentiation pathway. The Wnt Switch method significantly increases the efficiency of cardiomyocyte derivation (86%) from ESC compared to published methods (56%).

Interestingly, the Wnt Switch method showed that despite the external stimulation of Wnt signaling, Vezf1 KO cells are unable to differentiate into cardiomyocytes and show reduced expression of mesodermal genes 48 hrs post-differentiation. To better understand the stage-specific role of Vezf1 in cardiomyocyte development, we generated doxycycline-inducible Vezf1 knockdown clones that significantly reduce Vezf1 protein levels upon treatment with doxycycline. We found that the knockdown of Vezf1 prior to mesoderm induction significantly impaired ESC differentiation but had no significant effect on cardiomyocyte development after mesoderm induction. These data indicate that Vezf1 expression is crucial for proper mesoderm and, thus, mesodermal lineage development. Further, FACS analysis showed reduced mesoderm cell populations derived from Vezf1 null post-differentiation. We used high throughput sequencing methods to determine genome-wide Vezf1 binding by ChIP-SEQ and compared gene expression in WT and Vezf1 null cells using RNA-SEQ. The data indicated that VEZF1 binds near the promoters of numerous Wnt signaling genes after differentiation and that the expression of Wnt pathway genes decreases when Vezf1 is lost. Interestingly, supplementing WNT3A protein in culture media of Vezf1 null cells rescues the expression of Wnt target genes necessary for mesoderm formation.

Differentiating Vezf1 KO cells to endothelial or cardiomyocyte lineages also resulted in massive cell death. The surviving cells interestingly stained positive for alkaline phosphatase (AP) staining, indicating retention of the pluripotency in Vezf1 KO cells. Whereas, re-culturing of WT ESC in LIF media, after differentiating them for five days in the absence of LIF, results in cell death, Vezf1 KO cells proliferate and form AP-positive and SSEA-positive colonies. We further show the retention of pluripotency gene expression post-differentiation using RNA sequencing and RT-qPCR. Moreover, we show that the continued expression of pluripotency genes post-differentiation was not a consequence of reduced global DNA methylation in Vezf1 KO cells.

Interestingly, our data show that Vezf1 is a transcriptional activator and binds to key pro-differentiation pathways like the MAPK signaling and WNT signaling pathways. The loss of Vezf1 correlates with reduced expression of genes in the pro-differentiation pathways. We show that CTCF, an insulator-binding protein, opportunistically binds to VEZF1 sites on genes in the pro-differentiation signaling pathways in VEZF1 KO cells. Therefore, we hypothesized that this opportunistic CTCF binding is the mechanism that drives the repression of pro-differentiation signaling genes or compensates for the loss of Vezf1 binding to support basal gene expression in the absence of VEZF1. Given the dire consequences of pluripotency in cancer stem cells, we investigated the expression of Vezf1 in cancers. We found that Vezf1 expression is reduced in many cancers and is correlated with poor prognosis. We also show that MAPK3, a prominent member of the MAPK signaling pathway, is reduced in these cancers, highlighting a strong correlation between Vezf1 expression and Mapk3 gene expression in cancers. The data extend our observation of pluripotency in ESCs to cancers. To gain further insights into the role of Vezf1 in cancer, we utilized F9 embryonic carcinoma cells. F9 cells have been reported to retain pluripotency expression post-differentiation. Interestingly, the ectopic and transient expression of Vezf1 in F9 cells significantly reduced the expression of pluripotency genes, suggesting that Vezf1 is sufficient to repress pluripotency gene expression in F9 carcinoma cells. These data highlight the significant role of Vezf1 in pluripotency gene repression and provide an excellent avenue for treating cancer relapse caused by the occurrence of cancer stem cells.

In conclusion, our research elucidates the critical role of Vezf1 in cardiomyocyte formation and pluripotency regulation during embryonic development. Understanding the molecular mechanisms underlying Vezf1-mediated pathways provides insights into developmental processes and holds promise for therapeutic interventions for cardiomyocyte regeneration and against cancers.

Recently, Dr. Hanbo Shim Ph.D., University of Texas at Arlington Assistant Professor of Management, won the Academy of Management Human Resources Division Ralph Alexander Best Dissertation Awar d .  The award   will be presented at the 84th Annual Meeting of Academy of Management this August.

The AOM Human Resources Division is a division of the greater AOM organization which is dedicated to understanding and improving the efficiency and effectiveness of HR practices. The division is one of the AOM’s largest with over 3300 members. The division acts as a gathering place for academics and HR professionals to create networks and develop state-of-the-art HR knowledge.

This prestigious award is presented to research dissertations that have contributed to solving significant obstacles in the field of Human Resources.

“There’s an annual competition for all the best dissertations that isn’t bound to the state of Texas,” said Shim. “The competition encompasses dissertations that had been submitted within the last two years and you’re competing against everyone who submitted. Shim’s winning dissertation “Understanding the construct and measure of job performance over time”, delves into the ways employee job performance is captured at the short term and long-term levels.

“This study highlights the importance of more frequent or short-term performance feedback so that employees can make more effective behaviors decision on the short-term basis,” Shim explained. “It also informs individual employees about what would be the detail and ideal profile of short-term performance behaviors to win more favorable rating in the long-term.” 

Through his research, Shim found that there was a deep correlation between short-term tasks and long-term employee ratings.

“Individual’s short-term performance behaviors such as performing his or her own tasks or helping others’ tasks can lead to different levels of long-term performance with different patterns,” said Shim.  “This implies that the momentary decision that you make every day or every week in terms of how you work can create differences in your annual performance ratings.”

Through his dissertation, Shim hopes his findings and research will have a lasting effect on not only the Human Resources career field, but also the decision-making capabilities of leadership as a whole.

“This dissertation could have major implications for anyone in an HR field.  Once you have more accurate and frequent data about employee performance, you’re able to make more timely and effective decisions.” Shim explained.

Although Shim was happy to receive this prestigious award, he views it as a successful team effort that allows the field of Human Resources to advance.

“I celebrated when I found out, not just with the people here at UTA, but with my fellow researchers like my dissertation director Dr. Michael Sturman at Rutgers.”, said Shim. “I felt joy, but I was also grateful to have the opportunity to give back. It feels great to find out that we can contribute something big to the organization and people we serve.”
