Chithha movie review: Siddharth-starrer is a hard but affecting film on child abuse

Chithha review: this is easily siddharth's best performance by far. it is painful to watch him suffer through it all without respite..

“ Unmaiyilerndhu odaatheenga (Don’t run away from the truth)” This is a throwaway line in one of Tamil writer Sujatha’s crime thrillers that has stayed with me. When a woman refuses to see an unidentified dead body, the protagonist utters this line. That’s what SU Arun Kumar’s Chithha tries to do. It compels us to see things we consciously avoid. That’s why some of the stretches of Chithha are hard to watch. When you hear the pedophilic serial killer say Vaseline among all the other items he asks for in a store, your stomach churns. When Eeswaran (Siddharth) wants to brutally murder the paedophile, you want to scream, ‘Hell, yes!’ But Chithha compels you to look at the issue beyond punishment. It takes the focus away from the perpetrators to the victims. It drives home the point even the burning urge to punish those monsters is an act of running from the truth. When the subject of child abuse continues to be a hush-hush in the mainstream, Chithha is far ahead of the curve. It takes the conversation to a more mature plane.

Chithha works because this maturity is not just in its ideas but also in its form. It is not just a film with good intentions, it is a good movie too. And it establishes that in the very first scene. Shakthi (Nimisha Sajayan) gets off a bus and heads to a restroom. She waits outside as the toilet is occupied. The occupant comes out, and Shakthi stops her from leaving. She asks her pointing inside the toilet, “What’s this?” She orders her to flush the toilet properly. She demands her to take responsibility. And she tells the same to Eeswaran (Siddharth) in the climax of the film, and that’s how one writes a consistent character. Later, when Shakthi comes out of the toilet, there is a close-up shot of her wet legs and pyjamas. Now, make what you will of the shot. It could be an indication of the amount of water Shakthi has spent flushing the toilet, or it could be about the everyday uneasiness of living, or it is just a documentation of reality. It is a simple shot of everyday stuff that no one gives a second thought about, but it becomes much more the moment it gets written about or captured. That’s the pleasure of art, and that is why Chithha is mature in its form.

In another scene, Eeswaran tries to pacify a distressed child, who seems to be scared of touch. He notices something is amiss with her. Yet, the long shot of the scene portrays a different picture of his actions. Now, the audience is not told or even hinted that it is getting recorded in a CCTV camera. However, later, when he is accused of abuse, a video is shown as proof of his crime. Again, we are not shown the content of the video. Yet, we know what the scene is because we can correlate. SU Arun Kumar trusts the intellect of the audience, and that’s why Chittha works.

The representation of the police force is another example of the film’s layers. When mainstream movies are used to either mock the establishment or glorify it, the director tries to get near the truth. Here cops become actual people, who lack empathy because of the system which works like a machine. In the same meeting about the hunt for the serial killer, the senior police officer also offers sweets because it is his wife’s birthday. Now, one cannot blame the cops because it is after all work. It wouldn’t feel out of place in a meeting of a bunch of IT professionals. Chithha captures this bizarre and absurd reality subtly.

Then we have some of the brilliant performances that aid the brilliant script. This is easily Siddharth’s best performance by far. It is painful to watch him suffer through it all without respite. His scream when he realises his nephew is alive is haunting. The moment where he breaks down realising even his family perceives him as a criminal is devastating. And he hasn’t been alone in this fight. All the characters, even the ones which make brief appearances, stand out. Chithha is one of those rare amalgamations of everything perfect. The review doesn’t concern much about the film’s plot, and that’s a conscious decision because Chithha, like all good cinema, is much more than its plot.

திரை விமர்சனம்: சித்தா

பழநியில் துப்புரவு ஆய்வாளராக இருக்கும் ஈஸ்வரன் (சித்தார்த்), அண்ணி (அஞ்சலி நாயர்), அண்ணன் மகள் சுந்தரி (சஹஸ்ர ஸ்ரீ) ஆகியோருடன் வாழ்கிறார். சுந்தரி மீது உயிரையே வைத்திருக்கிறார். காவல்துறையில் பணியாற்றும் தன் நண்பன் வடிவேலுவின் அக்கா மகளும் சுந்தரியின் வகுப்புத் தோழியுமான பொன்னி (அபியா தஸ்நீம்) மீதும் பாசத்துடன் பழகுகிறார். ஆனால், பொன்னி பாலியல் வன்முறைக்கு உள்ளாக, பழி ஈஸ்வரன் மீது விழுகிறது. அதிலிருந்து ஈஸ்வரன் விடுபடும் தருணத்தில், சுந்தரியை அடையாளம் தெரியாத நபர் கடத்திச் செல்கிறார். சுந்தரி கிடைத்தாளா? பொன்னியை பாலியல் வன்முறைக்கு உள்ளாக்கியது யார்? இந்தத் தேடுதல் பயணத்தில் ஈஸ்வரனுக்கு நிகழ்வது என்ன? என்பது மீதிப் படம்.

சிறார் மீதான பாலியல் வன்முறை, அது குடும்பங்களிலும் சமூகத்திலும் ஏற்படுத்தும் தாக்கங்கள், அதைக் கையாள்வதற்குத் தேவையான புரிதல் ஆகியவை தொடர்பான சமூக விழிப்புணர்வுப் படத்தைப் பிரச்சார நெடி இல்லாமல் கொடுத்திருக்கிறார் இயக்குநர் அருண்குமார். ஒரு த்ரில்லருக்கேற்ற பரபரப்பான திரைக்கதை, அழுத்தமான வசனங்கள், அபாரமான காட்சிமொழி, தெளிவான சமூக - அரசியல் புரிதல் ஆகியவற்றுடன் மேம்பட்ட படைப்பாகக் கொடுத்திருக்கிறார்.

பாலியல் குற்றத்தால் பாதிக்கப்பட்ட பெண்கள் அதிலிருந்து மீண்டுவந்து நிம்மதியாக வாழ்வதற்கானச் சூழலை ஏற்படுத்திக் கொடுப்பதற்குப் பதிலாகக் குற்றவாளிகளைப் பழிவாங்குவதில் சில ஆண்கள் முனைப்புக் காண்பிப்பதையும், குடும்ப கவுரவம், வீரம், மானப் பிரச்சினை என அதன் பின்னால் இயங்கும் ஆணாதிக்க விழுமியங்களை அழுத்தமாகப் பதிவு செய்திருப்பதும் வரவேற்புக்குரியது. பொன்னியும் சுந்தரியும் தனியாக ஓர் இடத்துக்குப் பயணிக்கும் இடத்தில் தொற்றிக்கொள்ளும் பரபரப்பு, இறுதிவரை தொய்வின்றித் தொடர்கிறது. குறிப்பாகச் சுந்தரி தொலைந்துபோகும் இடைவேளைக் காட்சியும் இரண்டாம் பாதியில் வரும் வாகனப் பரிசோதனைக் காட்சியும் பரபரப்பின் உச்சிக்கே கொண்டு சென்றுவிடுகின்றன.

இத்தகைய திரைக்கதையில் உணர்வுபூர்வமான உச்சங்களைத் தொடும் காட்சிகளுக்கும் பஞ்சமில்லாமல் இருப்பது மேம்பட்ட திரைக்கதைக்குச் சான்று. ஈஸ்வரன் மீது பழி விழுந்திருக்கும் நேரத்தில் அவன் ஏன் சுந்தரியை விட்டுவிட்டுப் பொன்னியைத் தனியாக அழைத்துச் சென்றான் என்னும் கேள்வியை இயல்பாக அவன் காதலி சக்தி (நிமிஷா சஜயன்) கேட்க, அதற்கு ஈஸ்வரனின் எதிர்வினை, பொன்னிக்கு நேர்ந்த கொடுமைக்குப் பிறகு சுந்தரியின் அம்மாவிடம் வெளிப்படும் மாற்றங்கள் எனப் பல நுட்பமானத் தருணங்கள் வியக்க வைக்கின்றன.அதே நேரம், பாலியல் குற்றத்தின் தீவிரத்தை விரிவாக உணர்த்திவிட்ட பிறகு குற்றவாளியின் செயல்பாடுகளை இவ்வளவு விரிவாகக் காண்பித்திருக்க வேண்டுமா? என்னும் கேள்வி எழுகிறது.

சித்தார்த், சிறுநகரத்து இளைஞனாக மாறியிருக்கிறார். அண்ணன் மகளிடம் அன்பு காண்பிப்பது, பெண்களிடம் கண்ணியமாக நடந்துகொள்வது, தன் மீது காண்பிக்கும் கோபத்தைக் கடந்துசெல்வது எனக் கனிவும் முதிர்ச்சியும் மிக்கவராக மனதில் பதிகிறார். தனக்கென்று சமூகப் பார்வை உள்ளவராகவும் நாயகனை நல்வழிப்படுத்துபவராகவும் அமைக்கப்பட்டுள்ள சக்தி கதாபாத்திரத்தின் மூலம் நிமிஷா சஜயனுக்கு தமிழில் சிறப்பான அறிமுகம் அமைந்துள்ளது. குழந்தைகள் சஹஸ்ரா ஸ்ரீ, அபியா தஸ்நீம் இருவரும் சிறப்பாக நடித்துள்ளனர்.

சித்தா: சினிமா விமர்சனம்

செல்போனுக்கு பிள்ளைகள் அடிமையாவது, பிள்ளைகள் விஷயத்தில் அஜாக்கிரதையாக இருக்கும் பெற்றோர்களுக்கான படம்.

பழனியில் வசிக்கும் நடுத்தர குடும்பத்தைச் சேர்ந்த சித்தார்த் நகராட்சி தூய்மை பணி அதிகாரியாக வேலை பார்க்கிறார். அவருடைய காதலி நிமிஷா சஜயன் கடைநிலை தூய்மை பணியாளராக வேலை பார்க்கிறார்.

சித்தார்த்தின் அண்ணன் மகளுடன் படிக்கும் சக மாணவி பாலியல் துன்புறுத்தலுக்கு உள்ளாகி மருத்துவமனையில் சேர்க்கப்படுகிறார். பழி சித்தார்த் மீது விழுகிறது. போலீசிலும் பிடித்து கொடுக்கின்றனர். பிறகு அவர் நிரபராதி என்று தெரிய வருகிறது.

இதுபோல் சித்தார்த்தின் அண்ணன் மகளும் கடத்தப்படுகிறார். கடத்தியவர் யார்? குழந்தை மீட்கப்பட்டதா? என்பது மீதி கதை.

ஹீரோ இமேஜ் வீழ்ந்து விடாதபடிக்கு தனக்கு கொடுக்கப்பட்ட கதாபாத்திரத்துக்கு நியாயம் செய்துள்ளார் சித்தார்த். காதலியிடம் காதலை சொல்ல தயங்குவது, பாலியல் குற்ற பழி விழுந்ததும் வெட்கித் தலை குனிவது, அண்ணன் மகளிடம் பாசத்தைக் கொட்டுவது என மொத்த சுமையையும் தோளில் சுமந்து படத்துக்கு பலம் சேர்த்துள்ளார்.

சித்தார்த்தால் அடுத்த வீட்டு இளைஞன் தோற்றத்தில் இந்தளவுக்கு இறங்கி நடிக்க முடியுமா? என ஆச்சர்யப்படுத்தியும் இருக்கிறார்.

நிமிஷா சஜயன் நடிப்பு ராட்சசியாக மிரட்டியிருக்கிறார். நாயகனுக்கு ஆதரவாக தோள்கொடுப்பது, கழிவறையை சுத்தம் செய்யாதவரை மிரட்டுவது என நிமிஷங்களை வீணடிக்காமல் சம்பவம் செய்திருக்கிறார்.

அண்ணியாக வரும் அஞ்சலி நாயர், அண்ணன் மகளாக வரும் சகஸ்ரா ஸ்ரீ, சக மாணவியாக வரும் ஆசியா, இன்ஸ்பெக்டராக வரும் ஜான்சி, சப் இன்ஸ்பெக்டராக வரும் பாலாஜி என அனைவரும் சிறப்பாக நடித்து கதாபாத்திரத்துக்கு பெருமை சேர்த்துள்ளார்கள்.

திபு நிணன் தாமஸ் இசையில் பாடல்கள் அற்புதம். கதையை தொந்தரவு செய்யாத விஷால் சந்திரசேகரின் பின்னணி இசையும் அடடா ரகம்.

ஒளிப்பதிவாளர் பாலாஜி சுப்ரமணியம், பழனியின் மொத்த அழகையும் தன்னுடைய கேமராவில் கொண்டுவந்த விதம் சிறப்பு.

செல்போனுக்கு பிள்ளைகள் அடிமையாவது, பிள்ளைகள் விஷயத்தில் அஜாக்கிரதையாக இருப்பது என குழந்தை வளர்ப்பில் பெற்றோர் கவனிக்க வேண்டிய முக்கியமான விஷயங்களை இயக்குனர் அருண்குமார் மெல்லிய கனம் சேர்த்து சொல்லியுள்ளார்.

படத்தின் ஆரம்பத்தில் இருக்கும் பதட்டம் முடியும் வரை தொடர்வது படத்தின் வெற்றி.

குழந்தையை வில்லன் தவறாக பயன்படுத்தும் நேரடி காட்சிகளை தவிர்த்து இருக்கலாம்.

Siddharth’s ‘Chithha’ to hit screens on September 28

Directed by su arun kumar of ‘pannaiyarum padminiyum’ and ‘sethupathy’ fame, ‘chithha’ has songs composed by dhibu ninan thomas and background scores by vishal chandrasekhar.

We had earlier reported that actor Siddharth’s next is a multi-lingual film with director SU Arun Kumar titled Chithha . Today, the makers announced that the film will release in theatres on September 28.

Actors Jayam Ravi and Vijay Sethupathi unveiled a new poster of the film featuring Siddharth in a new, rustic look to announce the release date.

Details regarding the plot and cast of the film are expected to be announced soon. According to reports, the film will be a relationship drama that becomes a thriller.

Chithha has songs composed by Dhibu Ninan Thomas, background scores by Vishal Chandrasekhar, cinematography by Balaji Subramanyam, and editing by Suresh A Prasad.

Produced by Siddharth’s Etaki Entertainment, the film will be released by Red Giant Movies. Chithha is Etaki Entertainment’s fourth feature after Kaadhalil Sodhappuvadhu Yeppadi , Jil Junk Juk , and Aval , all starring Siddharth.

Siddharth's Chithha Gets OTT Release Date

Siddharth's Chithha (2023) marked a clear departure in the actor’s filmography. He got great reviews for his performance and ambition in bankrolling the story. After its successful theatrical run, the makers have now announced that the film will be streaming on November 28 on Disney + Hotstar. Chithha sees Siddharth play an uncle who immensely cares about his five-year-old niece and how he responds when he has been accused of a grave crime, which he takes it upon himself to solve. 

It is a low-key drama about the often under-discussed relationship between an uncle and niece, which was lauded for its sensitive portrayal of complex issues. Chithha OTT Release Date: When And Where To Watch Siddharth’s Impactful And Highly Rated Film

After getting fabulous reviews from critics and viewers, Siddharth’s impactful film Chithha is all set to make its OTT premiere. 

Siddharth's Chithha, couldn’t enjoy a solo release as it clashed with Jayam Ravi's Iraivan and Kangana Ranaut-starrer Chandramukhi 2 at the box office. However, it emerged as a sleeper hit.The film picked up pace after a positive word of mouth.

Siddharth expressed gratitude to his fans with a heartfelt post.

He wrote, "Thank you to the universe for helping us make this film. To all those who had access to the film and chose to see it in Cinemas... You have my heart and gratitude. To those without access to our Film in cinemas....CHITHHA will be on Disney Hotstar in a few weeks. Please do watch it and show us your love. When to watch Chithha?

The streaming service informed OTTPlay that the information regarding the movie's November 17 release date, which was previously stated in certain reports, is untrue. The official date now is 28th November 2023.

What is Chithha about?

Starring Siddharth, Sahasra Sree and Nimisha Sajayan. Dhibu Ninan Thomas and Vishal Chandrasekhar, Chithha is a hard-hitting emotional thriller addresing the social evil child abuse. 

The film gives out a powerful social message on how to treat people/kids who have been abused along with the impact that it has on the victim’s family. It also highlights how to offer support to such people.

When Siddharth cried on the stage during Chittha’s event

The film that has been bankrolled by Siddharth's production house, was supposed to simultaneously release in Telugu on September 28. 

However, the film couldn't release due to non-allotment of enough screens for 'Chithha' (Chinna in Telugu) in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. 

Asian Films then came forward to distribute the film. At the pre-release event, Siddharth became emotional and cried on stage. Siddharth revealed that top distributors in Tamil Nadu and Kerala watched the film and hailed it as the best film. 

He had said, "The film was supposed to release simultaneously in Telugu. But, many asked 'who'll come and watch Siddharth's movies?' I told them that if I made a good film, people would come see it. This should have released on September 28. I couldn't get theatres because of this reason. Asian Films' Sunil Garu saw the film's potential and stood by me. I haven't made a film as good as this. I didn't want to explain what's there in the film and recall 'Bommarillu' and my other films. I have already said these. If you believe in cinema and if you enjoy cinema, please go watch it. After watching it, if you feel that you don't want to watch Siddharth's film, then I won't hold any press-meets like this."

பிரதான கதாபாத்திரங்கள் தொடங்கி சிறிய கதாபாத்திரங்கள் வரைக்குமான நடிகர்கள் தேர்வு, அவர்களிடமிருந்து இயல்பான நடிப்பை வாங்கிய விதம் என எல்லா ஏரியாவிலும் பாராட்டைப் பெறுகிறார் இயக்குநர்.

பழனி நகராட்சி அதிகாரியான ஈஸ்வரன் (சித்தார்த்) கணவனை இழந்த தன் அண்ணி (அஞ்சலி நாயர்), தன் அண்ணன் மகள் சுந்தரி (சஹஸ்ரா) ஆகியோருடன் அமைதியான வாழ்க்கையை வாழ்ந்து வருகிறார்.

Cithha is a Tamil-language drama thriller that follows the bond between Eeswaran (played by Siddharth) and his eight-year-old niece. When she gets kidnapped, Eeswaran goes on a crusade to save her. The film promises to leave viewers engaged on the edge of their seats. The film stars Siddharth, Sahasra Sree, Nimisha Sajayan and Anjali Nair in pivotal roles. Chithha is directed by S. U. Arun Kumar and produced by the lead actor Siddharth himself under the banner Etaki Entertainment. Alongside Siddharth, Nimisha Sajayan will be playing a lead role in the film which also marks her Tamil debut.

The film was released in theaters on September 28. Made on a budget of Rs. 4 Cr., the film has grossed Rs. 16 Cr. during its box office run, making it a commercial success.

Milton lives a quiet life of routine in a small western Pennsylvania town, but finds his day upended when a UFO and its extra-terrestrial passenger crash land in his backyard.

This piece was written during the 2023 WGA and SAG-AFTRA strike. Without the labor of the writers and actors currently on strike, Jules wouldn’t exist.

With Jules , director Marc Turtletaub has put a spin on alien visitor narratives to, ironically, focus on something more human. The film stars Ben Kingsley as Milton Robinson, an elderly man in the first stages of what appears to be an inevitable dementia diagnosis. His daughter Denise (Zoë Winters) occasionally visits him when not working and has noticed some alarming details, such as objects being left in rooms with no logical reason to bring them there in the first place (for example, there is a can of beans in the bathroom.)

This is, of course, sad, but doubly so considering Milton appears to be a genuinely sweet and gentle man despite having some regrets as a father (his other daughter has already tragically passed away, while his son took a job in California 10 years ago and wants nothing to do with him.) His days mostly repeat the same cycle of visiting town hall, where his literalness causes him to suggest changing the town motto to “a place to refer to as home” and not “a place to call home,” which he says might mislead people into thinking they can make a physical call using a telephone. 

Milton is a lovable old goofball but unmistakably lonely (an outstanding turn from Ben Kingsley, knowing the appropriate amount of small-town, old-man quirkiness to give the character, also conveying sadness with nuance.) Suddenly, a UFO crash lands in his backyard one night, containing a hurt alien. As for this extraterrestrial, visually, it is a standard gray interpretation played by Jade Quon in a convincing suit (which may or may not be touched up with CGI), eventually receiving the titular name Jules.

Due to a relationship with Denise that is quickly becoming strained over his burgeoning senility, Milton is now lonelier than ever, rendering him quick to assist the alien in any way possible. He discovers that it loves to eat apples, gives it a detour around the house while explaining various rooms and household objects, and also begins to spread the news to the local police, dismissing him over the phone as a crazy old man.

One of Milton’s friends from the town hall meetings, Harriet Sansom Harris’ Sandy, inadvertently finds out about the alien, as there’s another one of their friends by way of suspicion and stalking what they are up to. There is an eased and comforted loneliness to these characters, but not without some amusing jokes and an oddball, dark sense of humor (I don’t think many people are prepared to discover what the alien requires cats for.)

None of this would work without the exceptional artistic design, emphasizing the understanding eyes of the alien and its patience. It has a willingness to learn and listen to them, which is something that these elderly characters need, but also a universal desire. Without saying a word, and just by being a charming, wholesome extraterrestrial, the presence of the alien encourages characters to confront certain realities about this stage of their lives.

The film doesn’t quite fully flesh out aspects of Milton’s past, and some issues between him and Denise feel cheaply and conveniently resolved. There is also a subplot involving government agents spying and searching for information on this crash landing, eventually bringing them to the small Pennsylvania town to locate the extraterrestrial, which doesn’t necessarily add much to the greater narrative.

However, the performances here are so heartfelt and moving, including Jade Quon’s portrayal of Jules, that one feels everything the film has to say about aging and the unfortunate loneliness that comes with it. There is something absurdly funny about the idea of aliens existing in plain sight and society not knowing about them because they couldn’t be bothered to take an old man seriously and listen for two seconds. Director Marc Turtletaub also pulls off some tricky tonal shifts, aware not to lean into them too much and where the heart of the story lies. Jules is a tender and touching exercise that leaves one wanting to be visited by an alien and to check up on their elderly relatives.

‘Doctor Who’ Season in Review: The Doctor Might Be on a New Path

“Doctor Who” is a show of paradoxes. At its best, it’s a show about a time-traveling, space-venturing alien who ceaselessly untangles the mysteries of the universe, and often invites his own. At its worst, it’s plagued by its contradictions — incoherent or unintelligible narrative logic, inconsistent writing, uneven tone.

This isn’t particularly surprising for a show with a decades-long history spanning the classic series (1963-89) and the reboot (2005-present). But now with Disney+ onboard as a co-producer, the series is caught between past and present, between pushing its boundaries and fitting into a more generic, brand-friendly mold. This played out in the latest season, which just released its finale, “Empire of Death,” on Friday.

Stacked with effervescent charms and staggering emotional range, Ncuti Gatwa, as the 15th Doctor, is the perfect representation of this new era of “Doctor Who.” He’s the show’s first Black, gay Doctor, bringing diversity to a show that has severely lacked it. In just one season Gatwa has delivered perhaps the strongest acting of the character, certainly in recent years. His performance is more tactile than those of his predecessors; the 15th Doctor fully inhabits his body, dancing, gesturing and throwing every bit of his physical presence into his line deliveries. The 15th is also more sensual and openly flirtatious than any previous incarnation; he exudes chemistry with every scene partner, including Rogue, a space bounty hunter played by Jonathan Groff in Episode 6. The kiss the two share is the first openly romantic, same-sex kiss the Doctor has in the series.

The kiss was a remarkable leap for the show, especially happening in the first season under Disney, a brand that has historically been hesitant to depict queer relationships. How far the show will actually push this relationship, however, remains to be seen. The flirtation between the Doctor and Rogue builds rapidly just to be abruptly halted when Rogue is lost to another dimension, undercutting the moment.

And despite the show’s fresh attention to diversity, this Doctor’s race has been barely even alluded to. The episode “Dot and Bubble” implies that one of the very rich, very white inhabitants of a planet under attack rejects the Doctor’s help because of his race, but the implications are so subtle that some may miss the racial undertones completely. And the episode “Rogue” takes place in a “Bridgerton”-inspired alternative version of 1813 as a flimsy workaround for placing a Black Doctor in the middle of Regency-era England without needing to deal with such sticky topics as slavery.

The new “Doctor Who” is a lighter, brighter affair in several other respects as well. For all of the sparkling humanity Gatwa has introduced into a typically more emotionally guarded (read: alien) hero, his Doctor also lacks the ruthlessness and darkness that occasionally surfaces in the character, who has been scarred from witnessing every kind of genocide and war. There’s a risk that this tonal shift is a harbinger of a larger, more permanent change: Disney may be in the early phases of transforming the BBC show much as it has done with other I.P., like Star Wars, which grew into an ever-expanding franchise at the expense of the original product.
